Tearing Down Statues All over the country court orders are being signed to tear down statues of all kinds because they offend some. World War II Memorial crosses are coming down. Other statues of historical figures are being yanked off their foundations. Did anyone read Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury? It’s about people who memorized books before they were burned and recited them to keep them alive orally because they could no longer be in print. It was an old Sci-Fi novel from the sixties and it looks like the future is here. Yes, the facts of history can offend but we if we pretend that these things didn’t happen by tearing down statues, we have not really come far in understanding one of the main reasons history repeats itself is because people have no reminder of it. If the World Trade Center did not erect a monument maybe in 50 years, people would forget. I have to admit it kind of cracks me up a bit that much of this is occurring in the Washington, DC. There is so much writing that on EVERY Federal building that could offend someone somewhere that it may take sandblasters 100 years to remove it all. Truly, if you go to DC, look up and read the buildings. Most all of the them have something that could be considered inflammatory to someone. What happened to freedom of speech? You don’t have to agree with someone. Just let them talk or at least take a vote. If people want a stature torn down, then it’s a public decision. My Aunt Gilda, an amazing
intellectual and compassionate individual and was knighted in Italy (yes, she is a Cavaliere) told me about how they were going to tear down a statue of Christopher Columbus up north. There wouldn’t be an “up north” if Columbus didn’t leave Spain and sail west with great expectations. He was not a perfect person by any means. Some of the most progressive pioneers were just plain mean. But does that mean we have to tear down everything we don’t agree with or can we somehow use these symbols to remind us of how flawed humans are in general. The pilgrims were not a cheery bunch. They had witch trials. No wonder Halloween comes before Thanksgiving. However, I will defend your right to put out pumpkins and pictures of pilgrims. Even Santa Clause can be considered a judgmental guy. What are his criteria to define naughty and nice? Should we take his images away, too? I hope you think this is absurd. It is. Put up your Santa and remember that all humans fall short and some just fall. So as the statues fall it may be a good time to think, if you were a monument what would your legacy be? It doesn’t matter what anyone tears down or builds up, it is how we know we are all connected and should honor each other here and now in constructive ways. That’s what we should be setting in stone.

EDITOR’S NOTE
Fall is upon us and so is the great weather that we Floridians so much enjoy. That being said, now all the events begin. There are so many events and festivals going on there is no way I could mention them all. So, I encourage you to head over to our calender of events section and check out everything that’s happening. I will wrap up by saying... Let’s get out in the community and support it. Polk County has so much to offer and the people who offer it work very hard. Let’s support them this holiday season. Support local businesses and buy local as much as you can. As Always, Expect More, Get More, We Deliver. Chris Douglas Publisher

Veterinarian of the Month When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981 his dreams of becoming an influential veterinarian in a big city would follow many paths. After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991 he completed a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, NY considered the Johns Hopkins of veterinary medicine. Instead of remaining in New York City he returned home to practice “big city” medicine with his mentor Dr. John Maxwell. Dr. Nations’ desire to help animals and commitment to practice at the highest level led to specialty board certification in canine and feline practice, one of only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country and 27 in the state. With this expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven doctor 24 hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral center, and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come. The completion of a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot veterinary center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations hopes to bring to Central Florida. “My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a veterinarian.”
Wilson, Flanders, Urkel, Rubble Wilson. Flanders. Urkel. Rubble. Do you see the connection? If you do, you have spent way too much time watching television in your life. Those are all last names of famous neighbors on popular tv shows (Home Improvement, The Simpsons, Family Matters, The Flintstones). As is the case in the world of television, in real life we all have some good neighbors, and some not-so-good neighbors. Where I currently live, I have been fortunate to have some really great neighbors. Well, at least the ones who live within a few houses of me. These are some folks who are always very nice, very helpful, and very considerate. Then there are the people who live in my neighborhood, but are three or more houses away. These neighbors let their three year olds play in the street without an adult around. They vacuum their vehicle more than they vacuum their house, and they do it with the car stereo loud enough to be heard in Highlands County. If they have a car, it’s so low to the ground that if they ran over an ant, they’d bottom-out. And if they have a truck, it’s so far off the ground that the steel nuts hanging from the rear bumper are at my eye level. When the garbage is picked up on a Thursday, they leave their garbage bins on the road in front of their house until Tuesday. These are the neighbors who leave trash in their front yard, and then when the wind blows, the trash moves over to another bad neighbor’s house, and that neighbor leaves that trash in their yard until another good breeze comes to move it away. Whose yard hasn’t been mowed in three weeks? Those neighbors. Whose house has the dogs who bark all day and all night? Those

neighbors. Whose house has duct tape on their windows, four months after hurricane season? Those neighbors. Whose house has mold all over their white mailbox? Those…oh, wait…my bad, that would be me. I’ve just been waiting until it got cooler before I went out and scrubbed it off. My point is, all neighborhoods have “those neighbors”. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a poor neighborhood, or a wealthy neighborhood, if your neighbors are old or young, black or white, blue collar or white collar…none of that matters. As I grow older, it is inevitable that I turn into one of those neighbors who the other neighbors refer to as “a grumpy old man”, or “Old man Bruchey”. I’m not there yet; I haven’t yelled at any of the local kids to stay off of my lawn. I’m not the kind of guy Clint Eastwood played in “Gran Torino”. To be honest with you, I think I’m a pretty good neighbor. I keep to myself. I’m always polite. I’m just a little quirky. And I wouldn’t hurt a fly. Crap…that makes me sound like every serial killer and mass shooter covered on TV. If I had to pick a TV character that best describes me as a neighbor, I’d have to go with Glenn Quagmire (Family Guy). Orange Blossom
REVUE by James Coulter photos by Shelby Jackson
While fall is slowly making way for winter and the holiday season, many people still want to hold onto what’s left of autumn, and the annual Orange Blossom Revue in Lake Wales is the perfect opportunity for people to wish the fall season goodbye. Hosted on the shores of the Lake Wailes Park, underneath the shade and Spanish moss of its oak trees, The Orange Blossom Revue is a celebration of all things Florida with local barbecue, beer, food, and music. Their main draw is the barbecue competition, with professional barbecue teams arriving from all across the state to compete and see who can prepare the best sauce and rub, or who can smoke the tenderest prime cuts of meat. This year will introduce the inclusion of a craft beer tasting pit that will showcase genuine Florida craft beer from breweries all across the state, allowing guests to enjoy a sort of “mini-festival” and sample the best beer with the purchase of separate tickets for the beer tasting. When not dining on beer and barbecue, guests can peruse a marketplace of wares from local businesses from across the state, with this year’s selection increasing its size six-fold with 16 different vendors. Perhaps another of their biggest draws, aside from their mouth-watering barbecue, is their toe-tapping music, with blues, rock, and country played by live bands featuring both local and national talent. “We try to get the best talent that we possibly could get,” said Caitlin Meadows, Marketing Director. “We really spend all year listening to bands and figuring out who we will have there...really honoring and staying true to Florida heritage, which is really important to us.” The Orange Blossom Revue has been drawing folks to Lake Wales from all over Central
Florida for the past four years. This big event having its humble beginnings as a small hometown fundraiser. For more than 40 years, the Lake Wales Rotary Club has hosted its long tradition of making barbecue and selling it at a dinner for its main fundraiser. However, upon becoming the co-chairs of the barbecue committee nearly ten years ago, Rusty Ingley and Reid Hardman came up with the idea to take the dinner to the next level by hosting a barbecue competition. “I was telling him [Reid] that there were these barbecue festivals that people paid to compete in them, and that it would be easier to have people show up and compete and have people make barbecue for us than for us to make it ourselves,” Ingley said. “At the time, we decided that we weren’t really great at cooking, but these barbecue festivals were popular, and we kicked around the idea of doing something different,” Hardman said. In 2014, the fundraiser evolved into the Orange Blossom Revue. Since then, the small hometown festival has grown into a much larger venue celebrating all things Florida, drawing in crowds from all over the state.

“We are not just [offering] a plate of barbecue and a beer,” said Meadows. “Our music is phenomenal. Our venue is gorgeous. It is somewhere where you would want to go spend your weekend with your friends and family.” Whether young or old, local or out-of-town, no matter who you are, there’s guaranteed to be something for everyone and anyone to enjoy, whether it be a plate of mouth-watering barbecue, toe-tapping tunes played by live bands, or vendors offering merchandise from all across the state, all provided in a scenic lakeside venue. “My favorite part about it is seeing everyone there enjoying themselves against a beautiful backdrop and such great music and food,” Meadows said. “It’s not a place where you will want to stop for an hour, you want to make a day out of it.” The Orange Blossom Revue will be hosted on December 1 and 2, from 4pm-9pm on Friday, and 11am-9pm on Saturday. The location will be at Lake Wailes Park at the intersection of E. Park Avenue & Lakeshore Blvd. at 33 N Lakeshore Blvd. Lake Wales, FL 33853. Winter Haven has a downtown spot for artists and the community to gather and embrace the arts. But Outer Space Art Gallery and Studio is so much more than a brick and mortar location. It is a program within the Arts Ensemble Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps promote art in Polk County and Central Florida. Outer Space features new artists every six to eight weeks with rotating shows. “We wanted to

create something unique and different,” says Jane Waters Thomas, executive director. Outer Space opened two years ago and has three resident artists – Trent Manning, Karen Retana and Adam Justice. Manning is also the curator and has a working studio at Outer Space. Manning doesn’t want people to just walk in, look around for 10 minutes and leave. “I look for non-traditional and edgy artists,” he says. Most of them come from other areas of Florida and even out of state. When an exhibit opens, Outer

He hopes to bring in more performance arts encompassing music, video, models and installations. A program through the Arts Ensemble that is dear to Thomas’ heart is Arts for Veterans and

ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).
By Erica Smith
It's Finally Fall Y'all “There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been!” — Percy Bysshe Shelley “All those golden autumn days the sky was full of wings. Wings beating low over the blue water of Silver Lake, wings beating high in the blue air far above it . . . bearing them all away to the green fields in the South.” — Laura Ingalls Wilder “I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.” — Henry David Thoreau Being a Florida girl, autumn is basically one weekend where you might need to put on socks in the morning and the temperature finally dips below 90 degrees. Floridians do not get the fluffy piles of leaves or enjoy romantic drives through sun-dappled trees dripping in copper and crimson. Most likely, us flatlanders will be able to keep the windows open for a few hours before needing to turn on the air conditioner. This year, we may have caught a break from Mother Nature as we have already had a few days of cool winds and no humidity. Just last week, boots and scarves made a toasty debut and the lower temperatures almost required the need for a jacket. These cool days have been a welcome respite from this terrible summer. Our backyard flock has been
enjoying the weather; however,
poor Scarlett has begun to molt.
Her black feathers cover the bottom of the coop floor like an ink slick. She is rather pouty about
the entire situation and is often terrorizing the other girls. My
early bird, Savannah, greets me
each morning wanting to go out
through the big door rather than the normal coop exit. Being the
smallest of our flock, she is also the pluckiest and struts impa-
tiently in the coop until I open
the door and start spreading the scratch. Our late summer chicks have moved on to another farm and the backyard seems rather empty without their constant
chirping. The backyard is returning to normal after the interrup-
tion of Hurricane Irma and we are planning our fall garden.
November is the month to
reflect and be grateful. This year, that notion seems more import-
ant than ever. Looking out over
our bucolic backyard makes me
thankful for the opportunity to be a steward of our little farm. We
may not be able to fix the chaos outside but we can make our home a refuge.
In the wisdom of Thoreau, find
your pumpkin this November
and reflect on how wonderful it is to enjoy a fall day in Florida regardless of the temperature. November is a time of giving
thanks and the perfect time to find your happy place.

the Healing Arts. Free art classes are offered for veterans and their spouses on Monday nights. “People come back and have seen things we can’t imagine and many have PTSD,” she explains. “The arts is a healthy escape for them.” Thomas says they serve about 50 veterans per week. “It’s such a cool, creative environment. You can almost see them relax when they walk in the door,” she says. Outer Space, a partnership with 6/10 Corporation, Polk State College, Polk Museum of Art and Arts Ensemble, also includes a private gallery for Retana, founder of Arts Ensemble, and a writing room. “We want people to have the opportunity to sit in creative energy,” Thomas says. “It’s about escaping what’s happening on the planet.” The Arts Ensemble Education Foundation reaches out to the community in many ways. The Eloise Visual Arts Center for Youth is an after-school art pro-
gram for children and EVAC also has a program for teenagers. Along with programs during the school year, the center offers summer camps. Unfortunately, $200,000 was cut from state funding which affected how many students could participate. However, Thomas continues to work hard for the arts community. “My greatest passion is to grow the importance of progressive arts in the community,” she says. “Now we have to make arts programs sustainable.” Manning says the community seems to be appreciating what they are doing. “It’s good to see Polk County embracing the arts more. I want this to be a destination,” he says. “We hope to change the landscape of the arts scene in Winter Haven.” Outer Space’s next event will be November 11 at 7 p.m. Grace Leal, from Cocoa Beach, is a mixed media artist with a wide variety of paintings and sculptures and will be featured at the gallery. THE SWEET SPOT
“That nice little groove in life—and music. It’s right where we all want to end up.”
Gravy covers a multitude of sins. Like when your aunt’s bird is as dry as the Sahara, or that casserole fail your friend found on Pinterest (you eat it so you don’t hurt their feelings), or when I burn the crescent rolls EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. Gravy, “you're the real MVP”. I assure you, my family and I are much better cooks than I make it sound. I’m just passionate about gravy. Welcome back to The Sweet Spot! Tis the season to share a table, give thanks, and break bread. This month, I want to share with you my sentiments on new country trio Midland, Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy, and Jess Carson. Sure, Midland’s front man was an underwear model and actor. Yeah, the bassist is a rap video producer. Yes, they have one of the most successful labels in Nashville backing them. Absolutely none of that should detract from their music. Country fans and listeners were literally begging for Midland’s throwback arrangements and tight harmonies. If you like Alabama or the Eagles, Midland is for you. Still, they’ve encountered backlash over the authenticity of their marketing. These fellas look like they rolled off the trail in dusty ponchos. They rock custom Nudie suits, channeling the ghosts of Gram Parsons and Porter Wagoner, all while rocking mustaches Tom Selleck would be proud of. Midland generated immediate industry buzz with their five track EP. My expectations were through the roof. Maybe it was the hype surrounding their full-length album; maybe I just wanted to pigeonhole Midland as country purists breaking into the mainstream—(which is the narrative they’ve invented for themselves) but I felt the EP turned out better than their debut album On The Rocks; mainly because I had heard the hits before the record was even pressed. It’s still a solid release, and worthy of your attention, especially if Midland is new to you. Tracks include

“Drinking Problem”, which exploded on country radio, becoming the trios first number one on the airplay chart. “Make a Little” finds a way to reference every Alabama song ever written (kidding, but close) while encouraging spontaneous two-stepping, “Burnout” is my personal favorite, “Check Cashing Country’s” infectious lyric’s will be stuck in your head in the best way, “Electric Rodeo” and “This Old Heart” both nail the catch factor with a vintage sound. Midland are incredibly slick marketers, and should be commended, not torn down. Their hardscrabble image is the gravy for their music. By no means are they the first artists in country music to find a gimmick. Willie Nelson used to be clean cut with short hair. Now, his braids and bandana will probably wind up in the Smithsonian. Johnny became ‘Cash’ when he dressed in black, King George’s crown is a Stetson, and Eric Church can’t even see the haters because his aviator sunglass game is so strong. In the entertainment industry, you have to change, rebrand, reinvent, progress, and adapt until you find what makes you unique to remain relevant and support your music habit. Midland did. Should we feel let down that they aren’t quite the outlaws their promotional photos portray? I don’t. When we attend a concert, what do we call it? We call it a show. It’s still show business, and Midland knows show business. BY GRANT STARR Monday - Friday 7pm to Midnight 97 Country WPCV, 97.5 FM Questions: grant@wpcv.com NOVEMBER 2017

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was Irish author and editor Robert Lynd who made the following sage observation: “History may be read as the story of the magnificent rearguard action fought during several thousand years by dogma against curiosity.” • Historians say that the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating dates back to the early European tradition of mumming, when costumed dancers would go door to door to perform choreographed routines, as well as songs and plays, in exchange for treats. • You might be surprised to learn that on a per-capita basis, Finland has more heavy-metal bands than any other country on Earth. • If you’re fortunate enough to be planning a trip to Argentina, you’ll almost certainly make a stop in Buenos Aires, the capital. While you’re there, keep an eye out for a mobile work by Raul Lemesoff. The artist, known for his eccentricity, converted a 1979 Ford Falcon into a kind of a tank -- it even has a turret that swivels. Instead of soldiers and armaments, however, this tank carries books on shelves both inside and outside the vehicle. Lemesoff drives his “Weapon of Mass Instruction” through the city streets, delivering free books to all comers. His only requirement? Recipients must promise to read what he gives them. • You’ve certainly heard of “Tarzan of the Apes.” Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 1912 work has been adapted over and over again -- for radio, television, film and more. You probably weren’t aware, though, that the novel was such an instant and ongoing success that Burroughs wrote 24 sequels.
