TID BITS TRACEY’S
By Tracey Greene
Make It A Magical Holiday Season With the holidays come certain expectations of happiness, cheer, joy, gifts, family, and a bit of magic. It’s the most wonderful time of the year…or so the song says. For some, instead of singing Deck the Halls, they are singing the blues. The holidays can also be a very depressing time of the year for some. Even if things in your life aren’t going the way you expected find something to be thankful for – there is ALWAYS someone who has it better or worse than you. We have to remember that the holidays are a time to be MORE; more giving, more grateful, more open to joy and peace. There can be miracles around every corner if you open your heart and just believe. For me, Christmas music always puts me in a happy place with a smile on my face and a bounce in my step. I’m listening to them right now as the snappy songs help to sprinkle positiveness throughout this column. Try listening while driving in the car, making dinner or cleaning the house. I bet you’ll be smiling as you’re dusting the furniture and mopping those floors. Make an effort to get out and enjoy the season. To continue feeling that holiday spirit all season long (and hopefully beyond) find events around the county to participate in. BE a part of the season. With so many events happening around town there are LOTS to choose from. Hmmm, wonder where I can find such a list? Well, how about page 26 the Holiday Calendar of Events in this magazine. This is a very complete list with lots of options to have a Holly Jolly Christmas. Many events are free or inexpensive to attend. Take in a parade, most cities in our county produce a Christmas parade. Some are morning parades that continue with Winter Wonderland community events after, some are night time parades that end with Christmas Village Marketplaces or the showing of a Christmas movie. Need cold snow to help get you in the spirit? But you’re staying in Central Florida…several cities host magical snow-themed events. Most are for kids but hey, we are all a kid at heart. Snowfest, Glitter Glisten & Snow,
Snow Central and the new Snow Day bought to you by Grove Roots Brewing Company on Dec 15th. How about a Christmas movie or two? The Historic Polk Theatre is playing many classic hits this season for a nominal fee. It’s always nice to see them on a big screen. Don’t want to go out? Then invite some friends over and do an old Christmas movie marathon night at home or host a full movie weekend of the classic hits with a Christmas-themed sleepover complete with footed adult onesies. Pink bunny suit with ears anyone… Invite friends and family over for a night of holiday cheer with light appetizers and adult beverages. Make it an ornament or cookie exchange. How could you not feel the joy in your heart? Christmas tunes playing, old black and white Christmas movies on the TV in the background with friends, family and fellowship…a perfect evening to put a sparkle in your eye and joy in your heart. The gift of giving. Many charities can use an extra set of hands during the season from helping sort gifts to serving meals. Reach out to The Mission, Catholic Charities, Polk’s Toys for Tots – they will be grateful for the help and you will get the gift that makes your heart grew three sizes like the Grinch when he began to know the true meaning of Christmas. True story: years ago, I worked with a company that gave out turkey certificates to their employees as a gift for the holidays. As a young woman who was blessed by having family close to share the holidays with, I would redeem the certificates and drive to the closest food bank and donate my turkey. It was a small gesture that they so appreciated. I always shed a tear as I drove away thankful that I could give this small donation to help others, thankful that I had friends and family to spend the holidays with and always wanting to help do more. Make it a magical holiday season. Get out there and get some of that Christmas spirit and give it back to others. It’s contagious like the flu so pass it around. Have a very Merry Christmas and a joyful New Year!

Awe... There is nothing better than a nice cold snap to snap you into the Holiday Spirit. When it comes to cold weather, I am no novice. Growing up near Buffalo New York, I have been through some of the worst winter weather you can image. Jay Leno LIVE!
The former TV late night show host, legendary stand-up comedian, best-selling children’s book author, pioneering car builder and collector, and philanthropist…it’s no wonder that Jay Leno is widely characterized as “the hardest working man in show business” will be performing live at the RP Funding Center on January 5th at 7:30 pm. Jay Leno’s late-night television ratings domination included more than two decades of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. After resuming hosting in 2010, he once again made it the consistent and uninterrupted ratings leader for late night. He has been honored by the Television Academy with an Emmy for “Outstanding Comedy, Variety or Music Series.” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” has also taken home the trophy for “Favorite Late-Night Show” in the annual TV Guide Awards determined by voting viewers, and he was recently installed in the

Tapestry - The Carol King Song Book The Carole King Songbook, the Premier tribute to Carole King featuring Suzanne O Davis performing live on January 8th at the RP Funding Center at 7:30 pm. Tapestry – The Carole King Songbook not only presents the record-breaking, Grammy winning album of the same name, but is a retrospective of the iconic songwriting team of Gerry Goffin and King, and her hits that continued into the 70’s. The show recreates the sound and vibe of a 1970’s Carole King concert experience and transports you back to the iconic image of her multi-million selling album of 1971. Suzanne and her world class band will be presenting the complete Tapestry album, along with many 1960’s hits from the Broadway smash musical ‘Beautiful.’ This
includes songs recorded by the Beatles, Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, The Shirelles, the Monkees – and the list goes on. We guarantee you’ll be singing along with all these great tunes. Suzanne has an uncanny likeness to Carole, with her energy, audience interaction, and piano playing effortlessly matching the vibe of Carole King in concert. Along with the huge catalogue of hits, Suzanne also brings stories about the songs and the history of Carole’s incredible career. Ticket prices are $48, $40 (other fees may apply) and are available by visiting the RP Funding Center Box Office, toll-free 888-397-0100, and online at www.rpfundingcenter.com. Hurricanes. Wildfires. Midterms. Calling this year a raging dumpster fire would be quite an understatement—if not an insult to dumpster fires! Yet every dark cloud has a silver lining, and so too does the dark smoky plume from a dumpster fire. So as this not-so-good year draws to a close, let’s reflect on some of the good things that happened:
#1
Falcon Heavy rocket launches. The most powerful spacecraft since the space shuttle successfully launched during its maiden voyage in February. The largest rocket created by SpaceX, this reusable rocket offers the potential of multiple launches, as was demonstrated during a recent launch for a satellite. Here’s hoping one of those future launches will be for the first manned mission to Mars!
#2
Liquid water discovered on Mars. Speaking of the Red Planet, NASA discovered liquid water under the planet’s surface. Using radar, scientists detected more than 12 miles of water within an underground lake. So who knows? If Elon Musk keeps his word on sending humans to colonize Mars by 2024 (fingers crossed!), at least we’ll know those first explorers won’t have to worry about going thirsty!
#3
Canada legalizes pot. Our friendly neighbors in the Great White North are sure to become even friendlier now that they can legally light up. Canada became the second nation to legalize marijuana, both medicinal and recreational. Legalization is projected to add $8 billion to the economy, and if Colorado is any indicator, the extra tax revenue generated from legal pot sales will most likely help better fund public services. All the more reason to visit Canada, eh?
#4
Healthy mice born to samesex parents. Several baby mice in China can say, quite literally, that they have two moms. Conceived through genetic editing, 29 healthy mice were born to same-sex parents. Ironically, China prohibits same-sex

marriage and adoption, but at least there same-sex mice—and hopefully, one day, humans—can still have children together.
#5
Water infrastructure bill passes. Whether it’s Red Tide here in Florida or lead poisoning in Detroit, Americans are in desperate need of clean drinking water. Fortunately, a bipartisan infrastructure bill passed in October authorizes $6 billion in federal spending on improving our waterways and water infrastructure. Both parties in Washington don’t always agree on many things, but they seem to agree that clean water is good.
#6
Cancer vaccine receives human testing. Earlier this year, Stanford University started human testing on a cancer vaccine previously tested on mice, which had successfully cured 97 percent of tumors. Only time will tell how efficient this vaccine will be on humans, but if proven successful, it would be one step closer towards a cancer-free world.
#7
Greyhound racing banned. Receiving 69 percent of ‘yes’ votes, Amendment 13 passed in November, thus prohibiting greyhound racing. This makes Florida one of 40 states that bans the practice, which has been criticized by animal rights groups as cruel and inhumane. Let’s hope the nearly 8,000 greyhounds placed in adoption will find good homes.
#8
Black Panther. Forget “The Lion King”! The “Black Panther” is the real king of Africa. Not only was it the best black-led superhero film of all time, but the best superhero movie period. Grossing more than $1 billion worldwide, “Black Panther” ruled the box office as the third-highest-grossing film in America and ninth-highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing even “The Avengers”. T’Challa nabbed the superhero landing. Hopefully, he’ll also nab an Oscar. Wakanda forever! QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com DECEMBER 2018

By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Chris Douglas “This restaurant had its start in my mind over 20 years ago,” Shemmer Thomas said, as she began to tell me about the downtown Bartow restaurant that has been open about a year and a half. Now, full disclosure—I’ve never met Shemmer in person. The day I tried Sista’s for the first time she had just left for an errand – so our communication has been strictly over the phone. When that happens, you develop a picture in your head of the person with whom you’re speaking… And I swear I heard a twinkle in her eye as she spoke. THANK MY DAUGHTER The personality of a town, in my opinion, is directly tied to its downtown – and downtown Bartow is brimming with charm: From the Bartow Mercantile to Rafa Natural (have you TRIED their soap?) to The Cookie Jar to Sweet Magnolias Café and Gift Shop – there are tons of great places to try as you look for a great place to spend a day shopping local for Christmas. And although I had spent a great deal of time walking up and down East Main Street and South Central Avenue, I had never stopped at Sista’s. Until my daughter began sending me Snapchats with pictures of oversized plates filled with food that looked so good you could almost smell the pork chop. That’s when I knew I had to try the place. - Continued on Page 14

THANK AUNT GEORGIA “When I was a little girl, my Aunt Georgia would cook these huge, delicious meals, and I knew when I grew up, I wanted to be just like her,” Shemmer remembered. In fact, her entire family, Mom and Dad included, know their way around the kitchen, and as she grew, Shemmer soaked up every bit of their knowledge. “It wasn’t just Soul food they made – it was food cooked from the soul,” she continued. WHAT IS SOUL FOOD, EXACTLY? You may think that the term “soul food” is just shorthand for all African American cooking; but it’s really only one aspect of it. Soul food, truly, is the down-home cuisine of the Deep South that millions of African Americans had been cooking for generations. Bob Jeffries, author of the “Soul Food Cookbook” described it like this: “While all soul food is Southern food, not all Southern food is soul. Soul food cooking is an example of how really good Southern, African-
American cooks cooked with what they had available to them.” The actual term “soul food” surfaced in the ‘60s, as other terms such as “soul sister” and “soul music” also became a part of the American lexicon. Sylvia Woods opened her now-famous Harlem restaurant Sylvia’s in 1962; today, Woods is known by many as “the queen of Soul Food.” Interestingly enough, Shemmer Thomas traced her lineage a few years back – and discovered that Woods is a relative… so talent in the kitchen really did run in her family.
were perfect – no runny grits here. “Grits are my specialty,” she said with pride. As we dined, upbeat Christian music played on the speaker. (Shemmer’s faith is very important to her, and she attributes the success of Sista’s to it.) “Why do you have a light menu day?” I asked Shemmer, later. “Because many of my customers come here almost every day and they were complaining that they had gained 10 pounds,” she explained, her voice still twinkling. “So I decided that on Wednesdays, I wouldn’t offer so many choices.”
EATING AT SISTA’S My friend Tiffany and I decided to sneak in a Wednesday lunch to try Sista’s. And although our food was great – I’ll tell you about it in a minute – we now know that Wednesdays are Shemmer’s Lite Menu Days – so if it’s going to be your first time trying out their menu, and you want to see a ton of choices, go a different day (keeping in mind they are closed on Mondays). That’s right – the menu changes every day. The large blackboard in the cheerfully decorated dining room lists the daily options. On that Wednesday, there were only about four choices – a Pork Chop Sandwich, Tuna Salad on a croissant, Fish and Grits, or a Fish Sandwich. It’s a good thing I like fish, so fish and grits ($9.00) it was. Luckily, Tiffany – who doesn’t like seafood – does like pork chops ($5.97) and added a side of fries for $3.00. She was admittedly disappointed that cornbread wasn’t on the blackboard that day. Her pork chop, however, was fried just right – and so was my tilapia. Perhaps even more importantly, the grits
ON OTHER DAYS The Blackboard, a picture of which is usually posted on their Facebook page, is chock-full of choices for both breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, give the $3 Holler a try – it includes grits and scrambled eggs. At lunch, the choices will usually run you from $5 to $9 – but if you go on a Sunday, when the choices are reminiscent of Sundays at Aunt Georgia’s – a meal will run you anywhere from $9.75 to $13.50, and will include choices such as smothered or fried chops or baked chicken. Fridays are Fry Days—and you can usually choose from Fried Shrimp, Fried Catfish, or a Burger with Fries, a huge burger named after her mother, Betty. Of course there are Fried Green Tomatoes. If you’re in the mood, try the Burnt Bologna – which Shemmer says is consistently one of her best sellers. Nothing on the menu sound good to you? Ask for a special order. “If you don’t mind waiting, I’ll make it for you,” she said. And I forgot to mention her sweet tea, which was incredible – and I’m not a sweet tea type of person. Still have room for dessert? Try the German Chocolate cake or Key Lime pie or Sweet Potato pie. “My sister in South Carolina makes the filling for it and it is wonderful,” Shemmer explained.

tional lexicon. Without Dickens, our idea of holiday traditions would have been much different as his novel solidified the symbols of Christmas trees, family gatherings, feasts and merriment. His beautiful prose eloquently captured the spirit the holiday season with rich imagery and enduring characters that has lasted for almost two centuries. Because of his work, we all recognize a little Scrooge, Tiny Tim and Ghost of Christmas Future in our hearts and that is what makes this novel so universal. The story leads to a conclusion whereby the miserly Scrooge wakes from his ghostly visions transformed into a caring and generous benefactor. At the heart of the novel’s message is the importance of kindness and goodwill towards all. We can learn much from this simple message, that kindness is the essential goal of all humans. Wealth, power and possessions are not what makes us happy. Instead, simple kindness leads to true fulfillment. Many of the recent headlines including the immigration crisis could be improved with simple kindness. Kindness is not mutually exclusive; moreover, it becomes more effective when combined with assertiveness, authority and command. Unlike many other solutions that require huge amounts of resources and sacrifice, kindness is free; it is abundant and readily available. This holiday season, start spreading a little more kindness, as it is the antidote to fear. And in the words of Tiny Tim… God bless us every one. CELEBRATES
YEARS Florida Dance Theatre F
by James Coulter
or nearly three decades, Polk County’s only professional dance company has been showcasing a diverse selection of dance styles including ballet, modern, and contemporary. The Florida Dance Theatre is now celebrating nearly a quarter century of its own existence with performances that utilize the many dance styles it has taught and performed during that time. Their new season started with their production of “Peter Pan”, and will continue this month with yet another rendition of a popular classic, “The Nutcracker”. Next year, they will showcase everything they have through their Fit N’ Fierce Festival, and especially with their 25th year anniversary celebration. Jermaine Thornton joined the theater in 2012 upon completing his dance program at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Since then, serving as a professional dancer and teaching faculty, he has seen the little theater grow in attendance and outreach over the past six years. During that time, he has worked with many professional dancers from across the country and around the world, with dancers from countries 28 DECEMBER 2018
such as Japan, Columbia, and The Bahamas. His theater also had the opportunity and privilege to collaborate with other dance companies across the country. Recently, they worked with the Imperial Symphony for their production of “Peter Pan”, as well as performed at the Battery Dance Festival and Association of Performing Arts Professionals in New York City. Being able to coordinate with dancers across the nation and world has allowed their theater to be exposed to a diversity of dance styles, which they then incorporate into their own performances. “There is always something new to learn,” Thornton said. “We would like to diversify our way of presenting the art of the dance to the community.”
The theater also operates a training academy that hosts up to 30 to 40 classes per week, offering lessons on contemporary, classical, ballet, modern, and hip-hop styles. Their outreach program, Chance To Dance (formerly the Summer Youth Dance Camp), funded in part by Publix Supermarkets Charities, provides free lessons to low-income students during the summer, as well as provides such students scholarships to attend the academy throughout the rest of the year. Such support has allowed many students to move on and attend dance schools and college programs. Many have even moved onto fulfilling careers with professional dance companies and even Broadway.

“They have all attributed the discipline that they acquired from [the theater] through dance, so I think that is pretty awesome,” Thornton said. With their current director, Carol Erkes, set to retire this spring, Thornton will be taking on a directorial role with the organization. Moving forward, he expects the theater to continue diversifying its dance styles and incorporating elements from the various other arts. “We would like to diversify the arts beyond the role of education and entertainment, to show that the arts are integral to everyday life,” he said. “We would like to really start coupling the arts into other genres such as medicine, the therapeutic practices and rehabilitation, and engineering and technology.” He also hopes to allow the theater to broaden its outreach into the community, especially with performances and classes through the public school system, thus granting more children the opportunity to engage with dance and the arts. Assisting Thornton in this endeavor is choreographer and co-artistic director, Stefan Dolbashain, who has worked within the theater for the past 10 years. Originally from New York, he joined the theater and moved to Lakeland upon passing his auditions. He later moved back to New York, only to return to Lakeland one year later. “I found myself missing Lakeland and missing Florida Dance Theater,” he said. “It was so nice to be back in Florida, back in Lakeland where the arts
are very well supported.” What he missed about the community was its love and support for the arts. With the local community having supported them for so long, he hopes to help give back with the help of Thornton, with big plans to expand the theater’s outreach. “Jermaine and I are very excited to take the company in a bigger and new direction,” he said. “One thing we want to do a lot more is to really bring attention...to Lakeland and show that there are... major artistic movements here that are worth coming over to see. So we are really trying to [improve], not only the organization itself, but also shine a light on the community in Lakeland and how involved and supportive in the arts we really are.” Having existed for nearly a quarter of a century, the theater has thrived because of the support they receive from their community. As such, they hope to continue giving back to the community whatever way they can so that they can continue to thrive another 25 years and more. “We want to really show the community that we are here...to really give back and add value to the community,” Thornton said. “Without them, there would be not theater, there would be no students for our academy, no one attending our shows. It really has been the community and generous sponsors such as Publix that has supported us and have gotten us this far.”
