As we look back on the last two years and ask ourselves what we missed most of all, travel is probably near the top of the list for many people. Who knew that I would yearn for standing in line at customs, emptying my luggage in the middle of the airport because my bag was over the weight limit, getting irritated when the passenger in front of me on the plane has their seat back when the attendant has clearly indicated it is time to be in an upright position? I truly missed those things and I was lucky enough to sneak in a family vacation as restrictions were lifted earlier in 2021. As I entered the Dominican Republic, I turned to my daughter and said, “That sound is one of my favourite sounds in the world – that sound of my passport being stamped.” She gets it. The other thing people missed was weddings. What an emotional roller coaster it has been. Cancellations, postponements, smaller guest lists, bigger stress. And while the ups and downs of planning continue, one thing has always stayed the same: the joy of weddings. Moving forward, plan smartly, heed the advice of travel and planning experts, and be safe. I can’t wait to see all the photos of your special day!

TIMES, they are a changin’ POST-PANDEMIC CHANGES FOR DESTINATION WEDDINGS AREN’T ALL BAD.

No matter what your dream destination wedding is, whether it’s on the beach in Jamaica or a rooftop terrace overlooking the ocean in Mexico, the good news is your dream will come true. It will be just as you envisioned; the only difference is that it could be even better than the pre-COVID days. Destination weddings have changed but the change is a positive one. During the pandemic, it’s been disheartening to see so many couples having to cancel and reschedule their weddings. Thanks to the vaccine, the world of travel has begun to open and destination weddings for 2022– 2023 are on the rise. One of the positive changes couples are loving is the flexible booking/refund policies and low deposits required to book their destination wedding. It enables couples to start planning with no or low-risk penalties if

they have to change or cancel their booking. And that takes away some of the stress. Not much has changed as far as the destination wedding itself is concerned, but there is a significant change in the journey to get to and from your wedding destination. You will have to be aware of the latest destination entry requirements as each have their own policies and procedures. PCR testing will more than likely be required, as well as temperature checks and proof of vaccination. Travellers, when returning to Canada, must use the ArriveCAN app and fill out required documents 72 hours before arriving in Canada. If these forms are not complete, you may be denied boarding. It’s an easy process and only takes a few minutes to complete the forms. ArriveCAN is also a great source for mandatory travel information and all you need to know to return home. The resorts have taken all the necessary steps to ensure the well-being of your wedding guests. The attention to cleanliness and hygiene is highly visible, social distancing is adhered to and PCR testing is available onsite at most resorts. Any special requirements such as food allergies or any needs for elderly guests will be taken care of and, rest assured, all your wedding details, from tea lights to fireworks, will be executed to perfection!

D EST I N AT I ONWEDDINGM AGAZINE .CA • 7

The resort experience has also changed in a good way. Top of mind is the safety and welfare of all guests. Resorts have gone above and beyond when it comes to their guests with increased health and safety protocols in place. For example, AM Resorts promote a government-approved “CleanComplete Verification” with 360-Degree Safety and Hygiene Protocols. And Playa Resorts’ “Playa Safe Stay” initiative represents their commitment to keep their guests safe, including private check-in for wedding groups, enhanced cleaning standards and anti-viral measures taken throughout their resorts.

istockphoto.com

The pandemic has changed how we live our lives on a day-to-day basis and given us a whole new appreciation of what spending time with family and friends means. It feels normal to wear a mask now. Social distance awareness is prevalent and showing proof of vaccination is a rule when dining out or going to a sporting event. But how has the pandemic affected the way we do destination weddings?

Craig

Sixteen friends travelled to Dreams Tulum in Mexico to witness this couple exchange vows. Officiated by drag queen Taiga Brava, at WILD Tulum, followed by a reception at Funky Geisha, this was not your traditional wedding.

SAY CHEESE: Kate and Craig fell in love with photographer Cacie Carroll and had her join them on the trip to capture each moment.

THE BEST PART: Kate says, “Every part of the day had something ‘Kate & Craig’ incorporated into it. Every moment felt full of positivity, love and genuine good vibes.”

MAKING MEMORIES: So what will guests remember? Craig says, “That we did something different. Nothing was your average, typical, traditional wedding.”

PANDEMIC PLANNING: “Trying to navigate all the updates, rules, what you can and cannot do was not enjoyable,” says Kate. “My heart goes out to anyone who was affected by the pandemic, wedding-related or not.”

SOME ADVICE: The bride insists that you should hire a planner. (Mahla Pourshamsa and team from The Eventeur handled this one.) And from the groom: “Don’t sacrifice your big day and moments to please someone else. It’s your day.”

Kate

Kurt

The wedding was a week-long, nearly 1,000-km, cross-country extravaganza that featured a massive chartered coach bus, many private tours, and, of course, a wedding in a 14th-century church in Lviv, Ukraine.

D EST I N AT I ONWEDDINGM AGAZINE .CA • 14

GUEST LIST: Nearly all the guests travelled from Canada (Ontario, BC, Alberta and Manitoba), with a few guests from the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and Hungary joining them. AN ADVENTURE: This trip included private tours of gold-topped basilicas, underground monasteries, sunset boat parties, abandoned fortress spelunking, brewery tours, five nights of dancing and open drinking, the infamous “Tunnel of Love,” and plenty of carousing as the mixed group of family and friends all got

to know each other. “I think it’s that intimacy that gave our wedding this distinct vibe of affinity,” says Kate. THE TOUGHEST PART TO PLAN: “We had to let go of all our preconceptions of ‘this is how it’s done in Canada’ and trust the professional opinion and the expertise of our planners with the final details,” says Kate. “Your most important relationship during the wedding planning process will be with your planners – they are your eyes, ears, mouths and local experts.” (Planned by R&A Events)

ALL THE MUSIC: The day included a bagpiper, organist, a streetband of violinists (which the couple stumbled across while the band was busking), and a DJ and saxophonist duo.

Jamaica’s Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Hotel set the scene for this tropical destination wedding. Returning to the groom’s home country made this day extra special for the couple, family and friends.

SIGHT UNSEEN: For most destination weddings, the trickiest part is planning at a venue and working with a team that you never actually get to see in person. “It was hard planning as we only had pictures to look at and had to trust in our wedding planner when she would describe how things would look and function,” says Irene. FAVOURITE PARTS: The bride and groom agree on their two favourite moments. Irene says, “When we first saw each other for the pictures together before the ceremony. Merrick (the photographer) made it playful and romantic with the poses we did for that. Second, that moment as Michael was at the altar, all our family and friends in the audience and I walked down the aisle with my two older sons escorting me.” ADVICE TO COUPLES: After planning a destination wedding, the couple has some words of wisdom. “Get a good wedding planner. Spend on the photography – it is worth it. You need the best pictures to capture those stunning moments. Incorporate the culture (food, etc.) into the wedding. Enjoy and have fun!” VENDOR LOVE: It all came together with planning from The Destination Collective, florals by D’Mar Events and travel by Unforgettable Escapes.

TRENDS toTRADITION DESTINATION WEDDING TRENDS THAT HAVE TRANSFORMED INTO TIME-HONOURED TRADITIONS SAVE THE DATE

Unsplash

Cacie Carroll Photography

A destination wedding often requires more planning on the part of the guests than a wedding at home. The save-the-date notice is a popular (and necessary) destination wedding detail. Sent out prior to the “real” invitation, it features the couple’s wedding date and a note advising an invitation will follow with full details. It allows guests to book the time off and make necessary arrangements well in advance. You can do this via email, but you might also consider a cute fridge magnet. Every day, it will remind your guests that something exciting is coming soon!

TRASH THE DRESS

istockphoto.com

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE OR BOX Ask your guests to leave a message in a box, bottle or some sort of container. After the wedding, the container is sealed until your first anniversary, at which time, you open and read the messages. The time capsule could also contain souvenirs such as the wedding program, copy of the wedding dinner menu or any special memory of the day. It provides fond memories of your wedding day as you celebrate your first year of marriage.

One of the most important things here: USE A GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER. NO POINT IN TRASHING YOUR DRESS IF THE PHOTOS DON’T CAPTURE IT PERFECTLY.

THE SAND CEREMONY

THE WELCOME BAG

This delightful and colourful ceremony replaced the “Unity Candle Ceremony” when it was discovered to be almost impossible to keep candles lit, especially on a windy beach. The couple, each with a vial of different coloured sand, pours their vials into a vase or bottle providing a vivid symbol of joining together as one. You can engrave your names and wedding date as a memento of your special day.

Welcome bags replaced the common wedding favour and are usually filled hand sanitizer, suntan lotion, water bottle or any item that could be useful during your guests’ stay. To keep your guests aware of timelines and happenings, include a detailed schedule of events. Depending on your number of guests, you might also want to include monogrammed towels, T-shirts or travel mugs. Speak to your on-site planner about adding something local to the bags, like rum or coffee. You can arrange to have these bags placed in your guests’ rooms before their arrival.

Unsplash

Or “Rock The Frock” as it is also known, is extra popular for destination weddings. There are so many places to trash that dress! The creative destruction of the bridal gown is done through a series of stunning photos, usually taking place the day after the wedding. The couple gets back into their wedding attire and literally trashes the dress – think, jumping in the ocean, horseback riding, hiking through a mountain, etc. Some brides purchase a second wedding dress, just for the occasion.

SIGNATURE COCKTAILS The resort’s bartender can help you create an exclusive cocktail with your name in it. For example, take your married name and add –‘tini’ or ‘garita’, then your mixology skills come into play. “Smith-tini”, “Garvey-garita” or how about play around with cocktail names such as “Bloody ‘Marry Me”, “Mai-Tai The Knot” or “Mint To Be Mojito?” Couples sometimes will match the colours of their cocktail with their wedding theme or colours like Blue Curacao, popular for its’ beautiful turquoise colour.

CAPPADOCIA, TURKEY

Turkey is not usually top of mind when one thinks about destination weddings and honeymoons, but Cappadocia should be on everyone’s romance bucket list. Turkey itself spans across two continents, Asia and Europe, which come together to meet in love and romance. It is the land of wild horses, fairy chimneys, cave hotels and hot air balloons. Love Valley, where hundreds of hot air balloons take flight in the early hours every day, is the engagement capital of the world, and the perfect place to say your “I dos” or commemorate the new dawn of your relationship with an epic photoshoot on the valley floor. In the valley you will be surrounded by fairy chimneys, which are suggestive pillars formed by volcanic rock, and cave dwellings from the Bronze Age. A large herd of wild horses may even run past you, while hundreds of colourful hot air balloons serenely float past. There is no other experience like it. You will want to experience a hot air balloon flight for yourself and can choose between a private voyage in a heart-shaped balloon or a group voyage. Both can end in a

There are many other experiences that are unique to Turkey, like going to a Shisha Bar, or an Imam for a Turkish bath experience, horseback riding, touring a cave city, Turkish tea everywhere, finding out about your future in a Turkish coffee reading, amazing hikes through rock formations and cave dwellings unlike anywhere else. SWITZERLAND Five memorable places to tie the knot

Lake Lugano provides an idyllic outdoor location with its pretty shoreline in Ticino, located in the southern area of the country. Offering an almost Mediterranean-like climate from April until October, your loved ones will happily fête you and your beloved at options such as the lush Gardens of Bürgi or one of the notable historic homes like Villa Orselina, Villa Ciana or the Sasso Corbaro Castle, a medieval castle and UNESCO World Heritage site, all with unforgettable views of the lake. With the alps as the backdrop, consider

the mountain station of Engadin and its lake plateau for a memorable destination wedding, located in an area close to Zurich, Milan and Munich. Outdoorsy couples will appreciate being able to hike year-round in this area to dispel jitters or heading to the slopes during the winter season. Accessed by the 1907 funicular railway, the nearby Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl offers a 16-room boutique lodge for attendees, recently renovated with a panoramic view from its 180-seat restaurant and a 24-person stone pine lounge for an intimate gathering.

istockphoto.com

NESTLED on the shores of Lake Geneva, the 150-year-old grande dame Beau-Rivage Palace is an elegant choice: plan a pre-wedding party in the hotel’s four-hectare private park, at the stylish Café Beau-Rivage or on the hotel’s 19th century Belle Époque steamboat while cruising the lake. For a welcome dose of wellness, consider a customized treatment at the Cinq Mondes Spa, the Active Wellbeing by Jérémy Peltier package including fitness coaching and spa treatments, or choose a Suite Spa room with wellness area. The postwedding treat is reservations at Anne-Sophie Pic Restaurant, honoured with two Michelin stars. Built between 990 and 1030, the Abbazia di Romainmôtier is located in a medieval village honoured as one of the most beautiful villages of Switzerland. Say your vows within the Romanesque-styled church with 14thcentury frescoes (like Diana Ross did with Arne Naess Jr.), then gather with family and friends for cocktails and canapes in the House of the Prior of Romainmotier. Located next door, the 13th-century mansion features coffered ceilings, antique paintings and grand halls; view the virtual tour to kickstart planning. For an intimate wedding in A-list destination Gstaad, consider Chez Mauricio in the Walig Hut at the Gstaad Palace Hotel. Originally built in 1783, this alpine hut, named Best Wilderness Hotel in 2013, is available from June to October. Manager Maurizio Paglino can lead guests on rustic mountain tour options like mushroom foraging or herb hunting before a traditional three-course dinner. Afterwards, newlyweds can spend the night in the hut suite with an unbeatable view of the night sky. For those wanting a summer wedding,

Snowcapped mountains and alpine meadows make for a picturesque backdrop to any couple’s special day. With wide-open landscapes and historic sites, say “I do” to these five memorable Swiss locations.

religious ceremonies or vow renewals. Some resorts do have chapels on the property, but keep in mind that some religious ceremonies may require a baptismal certificate. After you’re married, relax and have some fun! The Dominican has it all. Go horseback riding in the mountains, or jump on a boat with your crew and head to Saona Island or Catalina Island for some snorkelling. If wildlife is your thing, you can’t miss Monkeyland, where squirrel monkeys will literally sit on your head and snack on fruit. It’s ridiculously

adorable. You actually get to spend about 45 minutes with the monkeys, so it is worth the price (plus it’s a pretty drive to get there). If you’re looking for adventure, try a zipline or dune buggy excursion. Post-wedding, try to enjoy some one-onone time with a couples massage on the beach, a sunset horseback ride or a cenote (a romantic cave you can swim in) excursion. Don’t forget to partake in a few shots of Mama Juana – a wine/rum concoction believed to be an aphrodisiac!

istockphoto.com

PUNTA CANA has 32 km of gorgeous beach and clear waters, which is basically a postcard-perfect backdrop for any destination wedding. March to May are the best months to visit for sunshine. You’ll need the following to be married: your passport, birth certificate, declaration of single status, divorce papers (if divorced) and a death certificate (if widowed). Travelling to the Dominican from Canada may require a negative COVID test (depending on regulations at the time of travel) and proof of vaccination. Legally, you must be in the country for at least three days before you have your wedding ceremony. There is no shortage of stunning ceremony locations at which to be married. There are about 100 resorts in the area, which means there is something for everyone. And getting married at an all-inclusive is made easier by the romance/destination staff who work at most properties. With a wedding planner onsite, you’ll feel less stress and you can leave the details to the experts. The options may be overwhelming, so you could start with The Grand Palladium Bávaro Suites Resort & Spa, which is located on the stunning Bávaro Beach. The property offers several wedding packages, so you can go as simple or elaborate as you like. Get married in their wedding gazebo, or with your toes in the white sand. The Be Live Collection is also located on Bávaro Beach and is the perfect place for families or adults only. They have three different packages to choose from, and can include cocktail receptions, private dinners and even room upgrades. They offer civil ceremonies,

If you’re looking for a destination that isn’t too far, has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches you’ve ever seen and is an affordable option, then Punta Cana, Dominican Republic could be the place for you.

Be sure to visit the boardwalk where you can stroll hand in hand for hours, but also ensure that you stop for some gelato, or a cocktail or three so that you stay hydrated under the hot sun. The sunsets are pretty incredible, too. There are Hammam spas or Turkish baths, helicopter tours, tapas tours and horseback riding for when you want to try something a little different. Then, of course, the amazing food and wines that are everywhere. In addition, there is the ability to take day trips by car, bus or helicopter to historically mesmerizing and romantic towns like Gibral-

tar where you can see and interact with the Barbary macaque wild monkeys (which boasts the only wild monkey population on the European continent), the infamous Alhambra in Granada (built in the 8th century), Tangier in Morocco, which is Europe’s gateway to Africa, the UNESCO World Heritage attractions in Seville, visit a sherry bodega in the wine region of Cádiz, or the beautiful town of Ronda, which is situated atop a mountain and full of history and is perfect for a romantic wedding proposal. It also has the oldest bull ring in Spain. Undoubtedly, there are so many other things to see and do in Marbella, but you will need to explore those on your own and make your own memories.

head over heels in love with. Marbella, Spain is one of those places. Marbella is located in southern Spain’s Costa del Sol in the region of Andalusia. I’ve been married for 23 years and every time we go it feels like we’re dating all over again. Sneaking kisses, sharing laughs and holding hands everywhere. Marbella is a magical place that is made for lovers. There are luxurious wedding estates that will leave you and your guests breathless with their service, attention to detail and dramatic views just waiting to be personalized for your special day. Consider Casa de la Era, a private property with views of the sea and mountains, plus its own amphitheatre. Or maybe Finca Amalur Alabardero would be right for you. Get married under the palm trees with the sound of the waves behind you. Some highlights of Marbella include glitz and glam of Puerto Banús, which is known for its luxury marina, shopping complex and nightlife. Then the non-stop selection of beautiful beaches (27 km of beaches to be exact) surrounded by the Sierra Blanca Mountains to soak up the sun. Oh, and did I mention that there are 320 days of sunshine?

PROPERTY PAGES ROMANCE IS BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS

DESTINATION WEDDINGS ARE ALL ABOUT THE LOCATION. SO WHERE SHOULD YOU GO? HERE ARE JUST A FEW IDEAS TO INSPIRE YOUR DECISION.

Love never goes out of style and The Bahamas is the perfect place to celebrate it. Only 48 nautical miles from the United States, two international airports, direct airlift from Europe, Latin America, Canada and the United States and two major ship ports, The Bahamas is an easily accessible destination with many hidden gems to host a spectacular awe-inspiring wedding or an unforgettable honeymoon. Amidst all the stress of choosing colour schemes (What colour is eggplant anyway?) and bridesmaids, menus and cake tastings, we want to make choosing a destination a little easier for you. The Islands Of The Bahamas await with a tropical climate that offers mild winters and high temperatures all year round.

istockphoto.com

The perfect location for intimate and quaint to grandiose and over-the-top, The Bahamas is ready to accommodate any size or style of wedding. While beach weddings are the usual favourite, couples can opt for the old-world charm and sophistication. The Capital, Nassau, offers stunning locations for picturesque weddings including the infamous Queen’s Staircase, a historical landmark located at the Fort Fincastle or The Cloisters at Ocean Club on Paradise Island, the remains of a 12th-Century French Augustinian Monastery. Opt for a traditional cathedral wedding at any of the local Cathedrals for a royal affair. The beauty of this multi-island destination is in being able to marry on one island and honeymoon on another. Not having the hassle of planning two entirely separate itineraries or being burdened with clothing for two different climates, choosing The Bahamas makes it easy and breezy. You can marry in Nassau and honeymoon in Exuma or you can exchange your nuptials in Freeport and sail throughout the other islands, from Inagua to Eleuthera. While your love is renewed every day and your marriage gets stronger every year, you only get one shot at the wedding you dreamed of. Make it count. If there’s one trip you want to make sure you’ve packed properly for, it’s your destination wedding. Thanks to COVID-19, many of us aren’t used to packing at all, let alone for the biggest day of our lives. So, it seems like there’s bound to be some things that’ll get left behind. But don’t worry – we’ve got you. We’ve rounded up the top 10 items you don’t want to forget to pack in your suitcase for your upcoming nuptials.

GETTING READY OUTFIT

INVITATION SUITE If you’re having your big day professionally photographed – this one is a must. Make sure to bring your invitation suite with you – along with anything else sentimental (think heirlooms, cufflinks, jewelry, etc.) – so you can have all those little details photographed in a stunning flat lay.

HAND SANITIZER

CHARGERS RINGS Duh! Don’t forget the rings!

NAIL KIT No one wants a smudged manicure on their big day. While you’ll likely get your nails done pre-flight, all that travelling and unpacking could result in a chip or two. Having a nail file, extra polish and heavy-duty top coat with you will ensure your hands will be looking flawless.

You don’t want to take your wedding glow overboard if you forget to pack your sunscreen. Make sure you apply – and reapply – lots before the big day so your complexion isn’t tomato red when you walk down the aisle. ✱ Bonus Tip: Don’t forget the aloe, too. Your dress and veil and shoes are obvious to pack. But make sure you have something in your suitcase to get ready in, too. Maybe some silky-soft pajamas, or matching robes with your bridal party.

This one is new. Make sure you have enough masks stashed in your bags (both your carry-on and stow-away) to last you for your entire trip. If you’re required to wear a mask during your ceremony or reception – make sure you pack your special wedding masks, too, with your dress and accessories. You’ll want plenty of grab-and-go travel-sized hand sanitizers in your bags, to ensure your hands are germfree throughout your trip. ✱ Bonus tip: Buy them in bulk and add them to your guests’ welcome packages – just in case they didn’t read this article and forgot to pack them!

SUNSCREEN

It’s easy to forget your electronics chargers since they normally live in a certain outlet in your home. Buy some new ones just for travel and put them in your suitcase right away. ✱ Bonus Tip: Be sure to bring adapters, too, if the country you are travelling to requires them for your devices.

✱ Bonus Tip: Have your wedding bands and engagement ring professionally cleaned the week you leave so they can sparkle and shine on your big day.

ALL YOUR DOCUMENTATION – AND THEN SOME MORE Bringing your passport, boarding pass, hotel information and visas, are all no-brainers. But thanks to COVID-19, you’ll want to make sure you bring all of your vaccine documentation with you, too, as well as any other requirements. ✱ Bonus Tip: Make sure you have digital and print copies of all your documentation in case your phone or tablet decides to act up when you leave home.
