Give and take
Having friends and family join you on your destination wedding is one of the best parts of getting married in another country. But, you have to remember that this is a vacation for them, too – not just your wedding.
My husband and I rented a home in Costa Rica with four other couples in late 2022 (possibly my favourite vacation ever, by the way). With 10 of us travelling together, we had to be aware of everyone’s goals. Adventure? Relaxation? Nature? Shopping? We all had different agendas, so we gave each other space to make our own travel choices. No feelings were hurt if someone wanted to skip a dinner, or hit the road for some alone time. Sure, there were some scheduled plans, but mostly, everyone was left to make their own decisions.
And that’s what you have to keep in mind for your destination vows. Make your guests aware of any mandatory events – rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, scheduled excurions – but allow them the freedom to do their own thing as well. In fact, you should encourage it. Some guests may feel obligated to spend every moment with you, but don’t let them! They spent their money to join you, and most likely took some valuable vacation time to be with you – they deserve to get the most out of their holiday, too.
This is your time to shine, but be sure there’s a little give and take.

STUFF TO DO
DURING YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING
If you’ve made the choice to have a destination wedding, you’re in for the experience of a lifetime. But here’s how to get the most out of your trip.
GET OFF THE RESORT
If you’re having a resort wedding, be sure to get o the property once or twice to enjoy your host country. Plan an excursion (with just your partner, or ask your guests to come along), enjoy a nice restaurant, hit a club or explore a local city. This, of course, should be done only in safe areas. Speak to your concierge about the best places to visit, where you’ll be immersed in the country’s culture, while also staying safe.
INVEST IN GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY
This once-in-a-lifetime trip deserves to be captured properly. Hire a great wedding photographer to snap beautiful photos. If possible, do a pre-wedding shoot as you stroll through a local town, or a post-wedding shoot, jumping into the ocean in your wedding gown. After spending time, money and energy into planning the perfect wedding, you’ll want the perfect photos to go with it.
DESTINATIONWEDDINGMAGAZINE.CA • 8 istockphoto.com/ unsplash.com
GO ON A HONEYMOON
Destination weddings, like all weddings, can be stressful at times. So be sure to take a honeymoon after the vows have been said. You can stay at your current resort or hotel, but opt for an upgrade for the last few nights. (Like the honeymoon suite, or an over-the-water bungalow!) Or, go somewhere completely di erent to relax, unwind and spend quality time with your new spouse.
AVOID THE SUN
Sunshine is most likely one of the reasons you planned a destination wedding in the first place, so you’ll definitely want to soak in some rays – just not before the ceremony! Slather on that sunblock, wear a ridiculously large hat and search for the shade. You do not want to be sunburned on your wedding day –it’s painful and makes for pretty terrible photos. You should always protect yourself from the sun, but on the days leading up to the big event, be extra careful!
GIVE (AND GET) SOME SPACE
If you’re lucky enough to travel with a big group of family and friends, be sure to give them the chance to do their own thing. Yes, it is your wedding, but they probably paid a pretty penny to be a part of your day, so try not to overwhelm them with a strict itinerary. Allow your guests to have their own romantic dinners or private excursions; this, in turn, gives you some alone time, too.
The planning is done. You’re in a beautiful location. You’re about to say, “I do.” Those are the only things you should care about. If the favours were left at home or the right shoes didn’t make it into your suitcase, you don’t have to stress. Not everything will go as planned, and that’s OK.

PERFECT PLANNING:
Stacey felt like planning a destination wedding was a breeze for one reason. “I think overall it was very easy because we had hired the planner (Julie Thivierge, Wedding in the Tropics) right from the start. What we thought was a bit trickier was bringing all our decorations that we made at home to the final destination. Other than that, it went very smoothly.”
MAKING MEMORIES:
“Our favourite part was not only the wedding night, but also getting to spend the entire week with our closest friends and family and having made so many precious memories,” says Stacey. “I think the guests will mostly remember all the fun times and all the laughs we had at every dinner together, pool party and private yacht party.”
WORDS OF WISDOM:
Hire a planner, says Stacey. “I cannot recommend enough to get a planner that can take on most of the stress of communicating (possibly in a foreign language) and supporting you in every step of the way.”
LOOKING GOOD:
The bride wore a stunning dress by Calla Blanche (purchased at Sinders Bridal House) and the groom wore the perfect blue suit from RW&CO.

SMALL RECEPTION:
The couple hosted a 30-person reception a few months later and played their wedding video, sharing some laughs and tears with their loved ones.
WHAT AN EXPERIENCE:
“We were able to get a deep and intimate look at one of our favourite places to visit: Canmore, Alberta,” says Saša. “Of course, a helicopter ride (Martha’s Heli Hikes) is exciting on its own and it was amazing to be able to take in the scenic views. On top of the mountain we had sun, snow, hail and even rain. Eloping came with adventure that I don’t think we could achieve from a traditional wedding.”
DESTINATION WEDDING ADVICE: Saša says to go for it! “It can be scary not being able to control every detail of what is going on but you have to trust the process. The people surrounding you are experts, and while it may be your first time, it usually isn’t theirs.”

AWAY WE GO
Thirty-five guests travelled from Toronto, Scotland and Ireland to celebrate with gelato, bagpipes and fireworks, and dancing to an incredible band.
FAVOURITE PART:
For Laura, it was the planning. “I enjoyed getting to think of every small detail, whether it was the single lemon that we used to hold the place cards, the gelato cart or the custom labels that we put on the limoncello bottles. Each chandelier, candelabra, chair, place setting, wine glass, cloth napkin, was thoughtfully picked to set the exact atmosphere and vibe that I wanted.”
ROOTS:
Laura easily celebrated her Italian roots, but they wanted to focus on Mark’s Scottish heritage as well. Mark wore his tartan and they were piped down the aisle. Plus, they encorporated the Scottish tradtions of hand fasting and drinking from the quaich.

hat was the case with Erin Syrotuik and Chris White. Erin, a Canadian citizen, met Chris, an Australian-Canadian, when Tinder glitched and accidently set them up. Turns out, they weren’t in each other’s area, but they decided to meet up anyway. Not to say it was love at first sight, but the two were quickly inseparable. When Chris decided to return to Australia for work, he assumed Erin wouldn’t have any interest in packing up her life and moving with him. Wrong! She was down for the adventure and the two departed The Great White North, heading for beautiful Australia.

your
THIS COUPLE PLANNED AN AT-HOME WEDDING IN CANADA, ALL THE WAY FROM AUSTRALIA. Planning a destination wedding is one thing, but what if you’re the ones travelling to be with
guests?
“Getting married in Hamilton was extremely important to me,” says Erin. “It was a tricky process made even more difficult by the COVID-19 pandemic. We were originally supposed to get married in 2021, but the Australian government closed our borders to the world at the beginning of COVID and didn’t re-open them until early 2022, which meant we had to reschedule everything. Luckily, our venue and vendors were all very understanding of our circumstances, and we were able to book a date exactly 12 months out from our original.”
Family and friends were the “boots on the ground” in Canada, helping with the planning process and putting in a team effort to help alleviate the stress. Turns out, the biggest issue was the dress!
“Getting my dress (designed by Purple Fox) from Australia to Canada was stressful,” says Erin. “I’d been hearing all these horror stories about luggage going missing, so I rolled the dress up and vacuum sealed it into a duffel bag, which never left my side. It survived customs, airport jostling and the massive journey over the Pacific. I was worried that the journey would damage it, but when we arrived at my parent’s house and unfurled it without so much as a scratch, I knew everything was going to be OK.”
The ceremony turned out to be the stand-out moment for the couple. Erin says, “We spent two years living in the mindset of ‘It might not happen because of COVID,’ so, when I came walking down the aisle and we saw each other from either end, it finally hit home that all the work and heartache was worth it.
We were also so thrilled with the ceremony itself. Jason and Michael, better known as The Marry Men, built a perfect ceremony for us – a bit cheesy and very funny. It was quite surreal hearing our story told back to us and to everyone else there, but it was a wonderful way of closing one chapter and opening a new one.”
So what advice can they pass on to other couples who are marrying away from home? Work with vendors you trust. “We had so much fun working with our venue Barangas on the Beach, our photographer Scarlet Lens Photography and our officiants The Marry Men. They helped give us the exact kind of day we wanted and made sure that we took the time to enjoy ourselves. We’d also recommend making the most of technology. Chris’ parents were unable to make the journey due to illness, but we had a friend video call them from his phone so they could still be part of the ceremony. The world is getting smaller. Remember that a different city isn’t a different planet – you can still find ways for everyone to be involved.”

An engagement followed, and Erin knew she wanted to be married at home in Canada (Hamilton, Ont. to be exact). Wedding planning began, but COVID had other ideas.

WEDDINGS ON THE
Choose to cruise for your wedding
As cruise travel rebounds, so have romantic weddings at sea and destinations that offer unforgettable memories – whether your ceremony is in a gorgeous ship chapel with spectacular sea views or at your bucket list dream spot on land.
Cruise lines offer a wide range of affordable packages, as well as extravagant customized events. The cruise itself does cost extra based on the ship, itinerary, stateroom and more, but many couples consider the cruise as their honeymoon –saving time and money.
MSC CRUISES
Here’s a glimpse at what MSC Cruises, Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line can do for you, at prices starting around $2,000 for a ceremony.
PRINCESS CRUISES
Princess was the first large cruise line to offer legal weddings at sea in 1998. Today there are many choices to get married on or off the ship, including at the embarkation port for those who have guests who want to attend the ceremony, but not go on the cruise. A recent wedding on board was for Macy and David who met while working at a hospital. When they decided to get married on Valentine’s Day 2022, they chose Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess ship thinking there could be nothing better than having the event on the “Love Boat”. Macy had never cruised before and it was David’s third time cruising with Princess.
Says Macy, “It was an amazing experience, everything was included and best of all, it was stress-free. The ease of planning our wedding was astounding. Everyone was helpful and you couldn’t get a better backdrop for a wedding. The entire experience was perfection.”
Marriages are performed by the captain under the legal authority of the ship’s Bermuda registry. Princess’ wedding planners assist with all the required paperwork associated with Bermuda regulations and the fees generally cost about $500.
MSC Cruises’ event coordinator Glaucia Campos managed an unusual request that required true ‘sea-crecy’.
Says Campos, “I helped a groom organize a surprise wedding for his bride. He secretly bought her a white dress that I kept in my cabin so she wouldn’t find out. On the day of the wedding, I took it to the spa where she was and came up with a story that we needed a model to do some ship photography. She agreed and after we got her ready, went to the lounge to find her groom waiting for her. She burst into tears when she realized what was happening and it was a beautiful event. It was also a big relief for us because we had kept it secret for five days!”
Campos also recently planned a wedding with 80 guests on the cruise line’s private island called Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, while the ship was docked there during a Caribbean cruise. “The result was stunning,” she says.
MSC’s classic package is for eight people and includes a pre-cruise wedding planner, onboard coordinator, ceremony with pre-recorded music, venue with floral arrangements, bouquet and boutonniere, symbolic certificate, two-tiered cake, sparkling wine toast, stateroom décor and a one-hour photography session. Many more packages are available as well as customization.
MSC ceremonies are symbolic only and have no legal or religious binding.
At-sea weddings include music, champagne, bridal bouquet and boutonniere, photography services and canvas print, wedding cake, souvenir wedding certificate and much more. Onboard wedding coordinators make sure the day runs smoothly.
A custom webpage is also included and can be used to create a Honeymoon Wishes registry, email announcements, savethe-dates, invitations, track RSVPs, plus the ability to share and print photos.
You can customize your event with a wide variety of food, beverage, floral and photography, spa and salon treatment packages and other personalizations.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINE
Weddings on Carnival recently restarted and are currently possible on ships sailing from the U.S. Jeremy Schiller, vice president of operations says, “We are excited to restart our wedding program for our guests who have been longing to celebrate their nuptials on our ships. Creating special memories for our guests is what we do, it’s who we are, and the time to help them live out the weddings of their dreams is back.”
Carnival has many packages, giving you the opportunity to make memories that last a lifetime with a ceremony as unique as you want. With the help of Carnival’s team of wedding planners, you can choose from ceremonies at sea, at select ports of call and onboard during embarkation day. You can also invite up to 50 guests on the ship for the ceremony, who later disembark before the ship sails.
From the venue, music and décor, to photography, cocktail receptions and more, the weddings team manages everything you need. The size of the wedding is not limited, although guests cruising may be subject to the availability of staterooms.
Carnival’s basic package is for up to 10 people and includes a wedding planner, private venue with aisle runner, pillars and flowers, 20-minute ceremony, pre-recorded music, o ciant, two-tier cake, sparkling wine for the couple, photography services with a canvas print, wedding certificate, honeymoon dinner for the couple and more.
All Carnival weddings are performed by a local o ciant, except in the case of the symbolic at-sea weddings, where the captain, or another senior o cer presides.
Some ports allow symbolic ceremonies only, while the laws in other ports prevent the cruise line from o ering symbolic or legal ceremonies.
LGBTQ+ marriages can be performed, however certain ports do not recognize the legality of some wedding ceremonies. In those ports,
ship atmosphere, restaurant with roaring ’20s decor or laser tag maze with Star Wars vibes.
If you’re choosing a destination ceremony, consider one that has an overnight stay so there’s no need to rush back to the ship. Also find out if the ship docks at the destination so you can walk o , rather than use tender boats to take everyone ashore if that seems cumbersome to you.
the cruise line can provide a symbolic ceremony if the port permits.
Also keep in mind that you can plan a fun themed wedding such as a Hawaiian, Gatsby, pirate or other theme. The ship itself may have the perfect backdrop for your idea –such as a pool area with a jungle or pirate
If you’re concerned about weather, study the destination’s seasonal history to know when it’s the best time to cruise. However, ships can avoid really bad weather and sail to sunny skies instead. Wedding planners can also easily move your wedding indoors to a venue that’s best. With so many restaurants and bars on board and fantastic entertainment for every taste, you and your guests will also enjoy an incredible holiday. Everyone wakes up every morning in a new place, ready to explore a destination. Your cruise wedding could easily be one of the best vacations you and your guests have ever had.

“Creating special memories for our guests is what we do, it’s who we are, and the time to help them live out the weddings of their dreams is back.”
You’ve chosen to marry abroad. Congratulations on making that major decision. And now that box is checked, where will you go? That choice can be a bit trickier. Here are some suggestions for beautiful and romantic destinations that are perfect for your awayfrom-home vows.
ROMANCE DESTINATION
Arizona
what I’m talking about – if not, you’ll have to book a ticket ASAP.
“One
There are so many amazing highlights to this area aside from just the beautiful weather that ranges from October–April. Paradise Valley, being a more luxury part of the GPA (Greater Phoenix Area), is nestled right next to the hot spot for staycations. If you’ve already been to Scottsdale then you know
Paradise Valley, as well as Scottsdale, are both known for the food and nightlife/social seen. Before the wedding, make a reservation at Postino Wine Bar for $20 bottle and boards to share with your friends and family before the big day. After the wedding, reserve a cabana at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa for couples’ massages and then chill by the pool for a post-nuptial relaxation. This place is the ultimate getaway for weddings both big, and small. It’s worth adding to the list of potential areas to tie the knot.”
If you’re looking for adventure and nature, mixed with modern resorts and romance, then Saint Lucia is a great option. The coastline and landscape are breathtaking. Imagine getting married at the base of a waterfall? Or how about with your toes in some golden sand? Or maybe a mountaintop ceremony is more your style.
The Piton mountains in Soufrière are the country’s largest and most beautiful landmark. There is no view like from the water, so add a catamaran trip to your itinerary.
The Botanical Gardens can also be used as a beautiful wedding location, or simply a place to get some perfect photos.
Unlike many destinations, Saint Lucia allows marriage licenses to be obtained within 24 hours of arrival on the island, so same-day weddings are possible.

Anywhere in Mexico!
Stephanie Mayorga, travel specialist and owner of Designer Travel, says her go-to is Mexico. “Mexico is the perfect balance of culture, paradise and the comforts of home, making it the number one vacation spot for North Americans,” she says.
“Mexico o ers many landscapes for the ideal wedding – white sand beaches along Cancun’s Caribbean coast, sprawling views of mountains and ocean in Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific Coast, and rich Mexican culture in metropolitan areas like Mexico City.
Mexico is easily accessible with several flights to major cities from across Canada and the United States along with accommodations for all tastes and budgets.
Whether you are looking for a sunny beach location to say, ‘I do’, a cathedral for a religious ceremony, or prefer the landscapes of historical ruins as the backdrop for your special day, Mexico has it all.”
MEXICO’S SWEETSPOT!
Cabos San Lucas
“I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to many tropical destinations for weddings throughout the years,” says wedding photographer Stephanie Mason. “From my experience, I’ve noticed a few key characteristics that keep me travelling back to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico again and again.
Cabo San Lucas is home to some of the most luxurious venues and resorts with lavish spas and world class dining experiences, adventures and tours. From October through April the climate features a warm, dry heat with a desert setting. What does this mean for weddings? It is much less likely to rain on your big day! I’ve had the opportunity to spend months at a time in this location without experiencing a single drop of rain.
This is also the time of year when there is an abundance of wildlife for those nature lovers. You will see sea turtles hatching on the shoreline, whale pods in their migration, plenty of whale sharks to snorkel with, and what feels like an entire aquarium of tropical sea life. It is truly an incredible experience! For those that tend to be loved by bugs while away, I’ve also noticed there is minimal to no bug bites unlike in other more humid areas of the country where bug bites can be quite aggressive.
I would highly recommend Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to anyone considering a destination wedding for their big day.”

This tiny island (only 54 square kms) is filled with stunning locations to be married, whether at a resort, on a beach or in a historical building. The Unfinished Church is a truly unique wedding venue and holds up to the name – it really is a church that was left incomplete, with no roof or windows, and some missing walls, too. This allows for an indoor/ outdoor feeling that is unlike any other. While in Bermuda, you can enjoy pink-sand beaches, drink dark and stormy cocktails (or a rum swizzle, if you’re looking for a real party), explore the Crystal Cave and stroll through the city of Hamilton for some one-of-a-kind shopping. And of course, you can’t miss the historical areas of Bermuda (the perfect place for some pre- or post-wedding photos).

Maui
“Travelling to Maui for a destination wedding was a beautiful and transcendent experience. Sea turtles resting along turquoise blue beaches, the abundance of fruit growing within arm’s reach, the sound of a rooster waking you up each morning at sunrise, the warm weather, winding your way through cli side forests on narrow roads that make you feel like one with nature, hiking to the top of the island for the best
view at sunrise, and the serene mountains being an ever-present object in the background of your photos – it was not a monotonous place. It had such diversity within it, in terms of settings and things to do, that one would never be bored during their journey there. Maui is a photogenic island, and you will be greeted with many beautiful sceneries that are sure not to disappoint during your wedding portraits, or even when your guests are enjoying their time on the island pre- and post-wedding day.”

ROMANCE IS BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS
Love never goes out of style and The Bahamas is the perfect place to celebrate it. Only 48 nautical miles from the United States, two international airports, direct airlift from Europe, Latin America, Canada and the United States and two major ship ports, The Bahamas is an easily accessible destination with many hidden gems to host a spectacular awe-inspiring wedding or an unforgettable honeymoon.
Amidst all the stress of choosing colour schemes (What colour is eggplant anyway?) and bridesmaids, menus and cake tastings, we want to make choosing a destination a little easier for you. The Islands Of The Bahamas await with a tropical climate that offers mild winters and high temperatures all year round.
The perfect location for intimate and quaint to grandiose and over-the-top, The Bahamas is ready to accommodate any size or style of wedding. While beach weddings are the usual favourite, couples can opt for the old-world charm and sophistication.
The Capital, Nassau, offers stunning locations for picturesque weddings including the infamous Queen’s Staircase, a historical landmark located at the Fort Fincastle or The Cloisters at Ocean Club on Paradise Island, the remains of a 12th-Century French Augustinian Monastery. Opt for a traditional cathedral wedding at any of the local Cathedrals for a royal affair.
The beauty of this multi-island destination is in being able to marry on one island and honeymoon on another. Not having the hassle of planning two entirely separate itineraries or being burdened with clothing for two different climates, choosing The Bahamas makes it easy and breezy. You can marry in Nassau and honeymoon in Exuma or you can exchange your nuptials in Freeport and sail throughout the other islands, from Inagua to Eleuthera. While your love is renewed every day and your marriage gets stronger every year, you only get one shot at the wedding you dreamed of. Make it count.

SAFETYFIRST
LOCK UP YOUR VALUABLES! Don’t leave your cash, passports, tablets, phones or computers in any place they can be taken. Use the hotel safe or lockers. Bring your own lock along, especially if you’re visiting di erent tourist areas in which you may have to store your bag.
MAKE SURE SOMEONE BACK HOME KNOWS WHERE YOU ARE
Leave your itinerary with your family or a friend, along with your hotel information, flight info and phone numbers where you can be reached. You may also want to leave a copy of your passport behind, too.
BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE! And be sure it covers everything –trip cancellation, lost luggage and medical. If you travel often, you can get a year’s worth of insurance to save on the cost for multiple trips.
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR BAG. If you’re on a subway or train, keep your bag on your lap or the seat next to you, preferably tethered to you in some way. If you’re napping, put an arm through your backpack strap, or use a carabiner to clip your bag to you somehow.
SPLIT UP YOUR CASH. Don’t keep all your money in one purse. Put some in your purse, your backpack or your suitcase (not in your back pocket!). This way, if one is stolen, you know you won’t be without money.
BRING A FIRST AID KIT. Pack all the basics, plus some antiseptic, sunscreen, motion sickness medication, allergy pills and pain meds.
BE RESPECTFUL OF THE CITY YOU’RE IN. Follow the lead of the locals when it comes to behaviour. Don’t draw attention to yourself as a tourist by ignoring local customs or not following rules or laws.
BE SOCIAL MEDIA SAFE.
Captioning your image with “Five hours to kill at the pool all alone” and then tagging your location can put you in risk of people targeting you or your empty hotel room. Also, don’t risk your safety by taking Instagram-worthy shots.
If you’re visiting a country or city to which you’ve never been, be sure that you’re travelling smartly and safely.
BE AWARE OF SCAMS.
Many busy tourist locations have crafty people who prey on tourists. There is the famous Paris “ring scam” for example, in which a person picks up a ring from the ground, asks a tourist if they dropped it, and then tries to sell it to the tourist. There are taxi scams in which meters are mysteriously “broken.” Don’t get in those taxis! By the end of the trip, your driver may demand a huge amount of money.
STAY AWAY FROM THE SIDE OF THE CLIFF. Don’t climb that tree. And avoid that “cute” animal who might be getting ready to pounce. Instagram likes aren’t worth it.
