In love with love
I’ve been on the editorial sta (in some capacity) at Today’s Bride for about 15 years. Seems like a long time to be at a job, right? You’d think things would get boring. But, there’s nothing boring about witnessing love as part of your job. In fact, the sappy lovefest that is the wedding industry is what keeps me so happy in my work.
Over the years, I have spent hours upon hours getting lost in the photo albums of newlyweds. When you look at our real weddings stories, you’ll see four-page articles, with 20 images or so. But when those galleries are submitted to Today’s Bride, they will o en come with nearly 1,000 images. And I don’t mind a bit. I will scour the collection to nd the perfect photos – ones that will show the couple’s happiness, and ones that will inspire our readers in some way. My favourite photos tend to be reception candids, when a couple is caught in an big, open-mouth, hearty laugh as they listen to a speech or toast. And you can see them look at each other, eyes sparkling, living in the moment.
And aside from the couples themselves, there is the wedding industry. What a roller coaster it has been over the last few years. A struggle, really. But at the heart of the industry there was one message: love will win. And it did. We overcame setbacks in the wedding industry that no one had ever faced. And still, planners planned. Photographers captured. Designers created. And people got married. I feel so lucky to work with people who care so deeply about love and bringing happiness to others.
I’m just so in love with love.
anks for including me.

ASK THE EXPERT
OVERWHELMED BY ALL THE BEAUTY OPTIONS OUT THERE? HERE ARE SOME ANSWERS TO START YOU ON THE RIGHT PATH.
Picking your hair and makeup team is a fun and exciting part of wedding planning. But, there’s more to wedding day glam than a talented artist and the time you spend in the hair and makeup chair. I’m sharing my key insights for things that may not be top of mind when making your beauty plans, but are important to consider.
TODAYSBRIDE.CA • 10
today’s BEAUTY ❘ BY MORGAN DAVIDSON, MORGAN SARAH MAKEUP
Finding a hair and makeup artist or team that aligns with your style and vision for your wedding day is essential if you’re going the professional route. With that said, there’s more to these vendors than just their artistry to consider before signing a contract to book. While skill and expertise are important, there are some questions and considerations to ask your team that may not immediately come to mind when booking.
First, you’ll want to ask your beauty vendor about sanitization practices and products used in their and their team’s kits. Look for a team that enforces using separate brush sets on clients or ensures they are cleaned between clients with professional grade cleansers, and that uses disposable tools where necessary and possible (think lip applicators, mascara wands, cotton rounds and cotton swabs).
Ensure they are sanitizing the makeup itself between clients, which includes disinfecting with 70% alcohol or a professional grade product disinfectant. For cream makeup products, you want to see an artist removing what they need using a stainless steel spatula and placing onto a stainless steel palette (both of which should be disinfected between uses). There are lots of things you want to share with your bridal party on your wedding day, but germs are definitely not one of them!
Secondly, it’s important to ask your beauty team about scheduling in advance and who will be responsible for creating a hair and makeup schedule. A savvy and experienced artist will be able to advise on how best to meet your scheduling needs the day of so you are not rushed in hair and makeup, and everyone has an enjoyable experience. Sometimes, this means they need to bring additional team members to make the most of a shorter “getting ready” time window. If needed, they should be able to easily work with a wedding planner to do this as well. Working with a beauty vendor who understands all of the moving parts of your wedding day (including working in spaces while photographers, videographers, planners and more are simultaneously doing their jobs) will make your life much easier.
How can I make sure my hair and makeup lasts on my wedding day?
This is one of the most common questions clients ask when it comes to hair and makeup, as wedding days can often be long. For makeup there are a few key considerations. First, you want to ensure
your skincare routine has been consistent for the few weeks leading up to the day. Making sure you’re in a good routine with a cleanser, moisturizer and SPF in the morning and avoiding bad habits like picking your face or sleeping in makeup will play a huge role in keeping your skin healthy. Skin prep in the morning will also be important, and your makeup artist should have some boosters on hand (serums and/or rich priming moisturizers) to really plump and smooth your skin so it’s in its best shape.
In terms of products, work with your makeup artist to make sure products used are ideal for your skin type and are designed for longevity. I like to layer a long-lasting primer with long-wearing and waterproof makeup wherever possible, and finish with a setting spray designed to really lock makeup in place. Avoid touching your face as much as possible once your makeup is on, and you
should be good to go.
With hair, make sure any colouring or cutting happens no more than 3-4 weeks out from your wedding day. This typically allows your colour to look more natural and “lived-in,” and you can get a light trim closer to the date if you feel it’s necessary.
For day-of styling, it is best to wash and blow dry hair completely the night before. Having second-day, completely dry hair helps styles hold their best throughout the day, and your hair stylist will be grateful for a workable canvas the morning of. Your hair artist should make sure they’re working with your natural texture and if needed, giving styles like waves and curls time to really set knowing they may fall. I keep a variety of hair sprays and waxes on hand for different stages of styling, and finish with a hairspray designed to set your locks in place. Like makeup, avoid touching the hair and it should stay put.
QWhat should I carry with me for touch-ups and emergencies?
A consideration that’s often overlooked on your wedding day is what you should have in a clutch or bag nearby in case of emergencies. I call these “bridal beauty survival kits,” though I recommend keeping a few other essentials in these that go beyond beauty.
Blotting papers and tissues go a long way, especially for weddings in warm climates. It’s tempting to combat shine on the face with a bit of setting powder, but doing this can make makeup look cakey and enhance texture where we don’t want to, and this is where blotting papers come in. I often give these to clients in a touch-up kit so they’ve got a way to cut shine without messing up
their makeup. Tissues are also key because, let’s face it – there’s always a crier in the party, and sometimes that’s the bride!
Lipstick or lipgloss is key to have on hand for photo touch-ups. As with blotting sheets, I give my clients a lip touch-up kit, but if you’re bringing your own lippie, be sure to keep it on hand.
I always tell brides to keep a small sewing kit on hand as well. Something as simple as a needle and some thread can save the day if a seam needs stitching on a wedding dress, suit, or bridesmaid dress (trust me on this - I’m speaking from personal experience at my own wedding). And safety pins can be a real hero.
Essentials like Tylenol and Advil, allergy pills or Gravol can really come in handy in a pinch. It’s so easy to forget to stay hydrated, get a little too warm under the sun, or find yourself sneezing and sniffling unexpectedly. Keeping these on hand can really save the day for anyone in the bridal party if they suddenly need relief. Finally, if there’s room to stash a protein or granola bar in your clutch, I recommend it. Brides often get caught up in the activities of the day and the number one thing we see is them forgetting to eat. I fell victim to this at my own wedding, and when it caught up to me, it caught up fast! Keep the snacks coming!

As many modern romances go, Memphis Mori and Bradley Gold met on Tinder. But before any real connection was made, Memphis’ account was deleted! Luckily Brad was able to track Memphis down on Instagram, brought her a coffee while she was at work and has been by her side ever since.

Black and white: Memphis is known for her love of black, and knew her guests would expect it. “We wanted to mess with them a bit,” she says. “I’m known for black on black on black. My house is all black. My clothing is black. My taste is always black on black. So we just kind of lied to everyone and led them to assume it was going to be all black. Made invites all black, our site was black, our dress code was all black. Even as you entered the venue all the signs were black, black candles, etc. And then you entered the ceremony room and everything was white. it was really incredible.”
Solid advice: Memphis has some words of wisdom for anyone planning a wedding. “Be weird. Be yourself. Be different. Hire a designer if you’re an aesthetic nerd like myself. (I really recommend Mad Bash Group.) But seriously, it’s your day and it’s one day. So be true to your relationship and don’t try to be someone else for a day.”

Heaven sent: While not religious at all, the couple does love religious imagery. The bride wore a crown of golden thorns and the ceremony back drop was a reclaimed church window.

A weekend of love: When asked what guests will remember most, the bride says, “the unhurried intimacy of the weekend.”
Slow start: The couple met at work where, luckily, they sat near each other. Ilona says, “We’re both quite introverted so it was a slow transition from working together, then getting lunch together, then hanging out outside of work, and it all culminated in a camping trip where we flipped our canoe full of gear. We worked together surprisingly well considering neither of us had camped before and we’ve been basically inseparable ever since!”
Goodbye, traditions: With the main focus on the emotion of the day, the couple skipped some of the more common wedding traditions. They opted for no wedding party (their families escorted them down the aisle, instead), no cake cutting and no bouquet toss. “We wanted to spend our time and energy on other aspects of the wedding that we valued more, like vows and speeches,” says Ilona. Perfect details: The bride was overjoyed with the florals. “The flowers, greenery and drapery in the barn were my favourite,” she says. “The barn was a good template and space and our florists did an amazing job; it looked like a fairytale dream come true. Stepping into the space for the first time was magical and we were in utter disbelief at the sight.”

Whirlwind romance: Mike and Julie were inseparable from the moment they met. “We met July 2, 2016, through mutual friends at a rooftop lounge in downtown Toronto. Once we started talking, we were inseparable for the night, which turned into a whole weekend of fun,” says Mike. “A month after the day we met, Julie’s friends bailed on a trip to Europe, so we headed off on our first vacation to Barcelona where our love story began. A few months later, we moved in together and started building our lives.” Favourite moments: The bride and groom have different favourites, but both revolve around the emotion of the day. For Mike, it was the first look. “The anticipation, excitement, nerves, and picture-perfect day almost brought me to tears waiting to see Julie for the first time. I’ll never forget that moment and how I felt.”
Walking down the aisle with her dad stood out for Julie. “Once I was standing up with Mike in front of all our loved ones saying our personalized vows, it I felt like it was only him and I in that moment, reflecting on what a beautiful life we had created.”

Richard, a sprinter on Canada’s Olympic team in 2004 and 2008, met his gorgeous bride Sheena when they attended the same church in Toronto as kids. And despite his family moving away to Ottawa, they got their happy ending.
TODAYSBRIDE.CA • 29
Aisle antics: “Richard danced down the aisle and had our guests laughing,” says Sheena. “He is always the life of the party!”
First date: After Richard’s family moved away, he and Sheena bumped into each other. “Long story short – I knew he had a little crush on me. We exchanged numbers and from there, the rest was history,” says Sheena. “Our first date we watched a play at the National Arts Centre, after I decided to drive up to Ottawa for one night. Looking back, I can’t believe I did the drive! Our date was awkward at first, but ended off amazing! Never did we think we’d be dating. Your future husband or wife could literally be right in front of you amongst your closest circle of friends!”
COVID changes: The couple’s original 2020 date (with 150 guests) was postponed, but they wanted to keep the original date. Sheena says, “We quickly planned an intimate ceremony with our immediate family in our new home. Richard’s mom, who is a minister, officiated our wedding while our loved ones watched online.”
It’s who you know: When it comes to wedding advice, Sheena says, “We loved the fact that every single person at our wedding held a special place in our lives. Be selective with your guest list; you will be glad you did!”

e design: “We wanted the natural sunlight and beauty of the waterfront to be at the forefront of our wedding.”
All for the guests: “We wanted to be intentional about every part of the guest experience,” says Esther. “From the way we seated our family and friends, to the songs played on the dancefloor that represented the different cultural backgrounds of our guests, the games that we played, the spontaneous flash mob lead by our friends, the glowsticks that came out during the dance party and the late night flatbread pizza station. We really just wanted our guests to have fun and celebrate with us.”
Celebrating culture: The couple had pieces of their culture sprinkled throughout both of their events. Esther says, “For our wedding, our mothers wore traditional Indian Sarees. For our Indian reception, I changed into three different, but intentionally chosen, Indian outfits that were so special to me. We also had a ‘coconut ceremony’ where both of our mothers presented our spouse with coconut water as a way to officially welcome us into the family. Usually this is done with milk, but, well, we are both lactoseintolerant, so coconuts were the next best thing!”

Arm in arm: From the vows, onwards, the brides never left each other’s sides – from mingling to toasting to dancing.
Flower power: The brides wanted the florals to be a big focal point. Cassidy says, “From baby’s breath overflowing over the edges of the guest tables to large baby’s breath arrangements on the bar top and round tables, to a lush aisle filled with baby’s breath, quicksand roses, and playa blanca roses, to a statement arbour behind us at the ceremony, we wanted the florals to stand out, and we think they did just that! It was a true fairy tale!”
Party time: “Through recapping the wedding with friends and family it was unanimous what our guests seemed to remember most,” says Cassidy. “Once the dancefloor opened up, the brides and the bridal party surprised the guests and ran onto the dancefloor wearing light-up neon white cowboy hats. The DJ played “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” as we all ran out handing out a hat to each of our guests. It brought everyone to the dancefloor – in an instant the party really came to life.”
Honeymoon: The newlyweds spent three weeks in Greece and Spain.

HELEN JUDGE & MARK WEBB
|
Favourite moments: Seeing the room reveal, the band, partying and dancing topped the list of special moments.
e perfect theme: The self-proclaimed “silly” couple wanted an outside-the-box theme for their wedding. “We both just really love the movie Jurassic Park,” says Helen. “We quote it all the time and watch it so much. Our shared love of the Jurassic Park movies is something we cherish and enjoy together. We are quite opposites and over the years as I’ve become less interested in snowboarding. Jurassic Park is almost like our main shared interest! So, to us, it made sense to do Jurassic Park as a theme so that our wedding would be memorable and unique and just something totally fun!”
e little things: It’s all the small details that make a truly great event. From the table names to the dino-topped cake, each item contributed to the Jurassic vibe. The bride had her own faves. “The floral arrangements were stunning,” she says. “And the monstera leaf place cards was a really sweet detail!”
Advice for engaged couples: Helen says, “I think it’s really important to not get lost in trying to please everyone else, and remember that it’s your wedding. Make sure it’s everything you want. And as stressful as it can be, it’s also fun to plan. Try to keep it fun and enjoy the process.”

today’s
When it comes to YOUR VISION, go simple or go glam. Here’s some inspiration to help you figure it out.
Celebrating the coming together of two lives in marriage is a momentous occasion. Many cultures have created their own customs which have stood the test of time and evolved into the wedding traditions we are familiar with today. But today’s couples are thinking outside the proverbial “ring box” and looking for unity rituals that will give their wedding that extra special touch. Since they will be a visual symbol of their union and a personal re ection of who they are as a couple, it’s important to make sure the rituals selected are ones that will set them apart from other wedding ceremonies. Here are a few favourite rituals.
Wine has been a fixture at weddings since the time of the ancient Greeks because, in many ways, a glass of wine symbolizes the sum of a couple’s life experiences. It contains the sweet flavours of love and contentment but can also hold the bitter taste of heartache and despair. That’s what makes wine the perfect analogy for marriage. During a wine ritual, two small carafes of wine, one white and one red, are poured into a third carafe, creating a rosé blend. The couple takes turns drinking from the same glass to represent their new union with one another. Naturally, non-alcoholic varieties can be substituted. The Wine Capsule is another beautiful way for the couple to commemorate their nuptials. Following the ceremony, their vows are sealed inside a wooden wine box with unopened bottles of the wine used in the blending ritual. Ten years later, the “perfect pairing” opens the box, re-reads their vows, and enjoys the aged wine to toast the many milestones of their relationship.
MARRY AND BRIGHT
The Unity Candle is a beautiful way to illuminate for others that two hearts are aflame. Two taper candles, representing the couple’s individual lives before their wedding day, are lit at the start of the ceremony. Following the exchange of vows, the newlyweds light a larger pillar candle using the flames of the tapers, blow out the single candles, and figuratively extinguish their pasts.
TO BE OR KNOT TO BE
An ancient Celtic tradition that dates back 2000 years, hand fasting is becoming a popular symbol of unity at many weddings. The hands of the couple are tied together using a carefully selected cord, ribbon, or embroidered cloth. This ritual confirms that the two partners on this journey will forever walk “hand-in-hand” and turns out to be the origin of the phrase “tying the knot”!
LIKE SANDS THROUGH AN HOURGLASS
In this ritual, the couple pours two separate vases of different-coloured sand into the same vessel,
creating a layered, one-of-a-kind pattern. From that moment, it will be impossible to separate those grains of sand which have come to symbolize their union. Many couples personalize this ritual by using sand from meaningful locations, and it’s especially popular for beach ceremonies and destination weddings.
GET DOWN & DIRTY
The ritual of tree planting symbolizes the couple beginning a new life together. Taking care of their sapling tree (or whichever type of plant they choose) will remind them to nurture each other throughout their marriage. Couples should select a tree species that is meaningful and resonates with how they intend to grow in their marriage. A cherry tree is associated with prosperity and good fortune; a maple tree symbolizes balance and practicality; an oak tree represents power and courage. During this ritual, the couple will take turns adding soil and water to the seedling and may also consider gifting their guests with similar saplings or small potted plants for them to nurture at home.
The tradition of wearing your ring on the “ring finger” traces its origins back to the Egyptians who believed that the fourth finger on the left hand was connected directly to the heart by a vein called “the vein of love.” Because of this hand-heart connection, this finger has been adopted through the ages as the ideal spot to wear one’s wedding ring. But contrary to popular belief, a couple is not legally required to exchange or wear rings when they get married. That decision is a personal one between partners. Wedding rings are precious because they are worn with love and symbolize a commitment in marriage. So, if you like it, then you should put a ring on it.

COLD,COLD HEART
Have your heart set on a winter wedding? Sounds magical! Here are a few ways to make it the perfect, chilly event.
Winter weddings can be unique and beautiful – if they are planned properly. ese colder-month celebrations o en need a little more nurturing than those in spring or summer, so be vigilant when it comes to the planning process.
(Or better yet, hire a planner who will take over all the details). Whether you choose a planner or not, here are some lessons from winter wedding 101.
SELECT THE PERFECT MENU
Upon arrival, greet your wedding guests with warm beverages, like hot chocolate, apple cider or mulled wine. It will help take the chill off as they mingle. When it comes to dinner, focus on comfort foods. Often, the meal will be light at weddings, but a hearty, delicious dinner tastes great in the winter.
TAKE NOTE OF THE TIMING
December is a busy month with all the holiday festivities. Keep in mind that the closer you plan to major holidays, the more you risk having people decline or be unable to attend. This is something that can’t be avoided, so don’t be offended by the no-thank-yous. Even if your friends and family are not celebrating a particular holiday, they can still be affected on your wedding day. Watch out for road closures for parades and other events that may cause traffic headaches.
EMBRACE THE WINTER THEME
Please note that “winter” and “holiday” are two different things. Even if you love Christmas, don’t go with a Christmas theme. You’ll want your wedding to stand alone and be its own special event. Instead, welcome winter. For favours, go with gloves or mittens, hot chocolate or mini pine trees. When it comes to lighting, twinkle lights can give a feeling of snow. Or go for a fully candlelit event (checking about candle/open-flame regulations with your venue, of course). Note: you should ask your venue if they plan on decorating for the holidays. You may have your heart set on photography on their foyer staircase, only to find it covered in garland when you arrive.
PREP YOUR SKIN
Winter weather wreaks havoc on the skin and lips, and you’ll want your pucker to be extra kissable on the day of your wedding. Start a skincare routine well before the big day, to be sure your skin is nice and soft. Face lotion, serums and sunscreen (yes, even in winter) should be applied daily. At nighttime, a good moisturizer is a must, and a lip mask is key for protecting against dry, cracked lips.
CHOOSE ONE VENUE
If possible, have your ceremony and reception in the same location. Moving from one venue to another is a risky game when it comes to inclement weather. You know how Canada is: it’s gorgeous and sunny when you go into a building, and 20 minutes later you emerge, only to find that a blizzard has hit and you’re in socks and sandals. Limiting the driving from place to place is considerate for your guests. You’ll get extra points if your wedding party can actually get ready at the same venue (think: hotel weddings). If one location isn’t feasible, consider providing transportation between venues. Your guests will thank you.
PLAN YOUR PHOTOS
Outdoor photos in the winter are pure magic, but they can come with a price. If it’s too cold, you’ll be battling runny noses, extra-rosy cheeks or wind-blown hair. If you plan on switching between indoor and outdoor photos, be sure the outside photos are last. If you’re doing wedding party photos during prep time, forgo the matching floral robes and go for plaid PJs; they are much cozier and on theme.
KEEP YOUR GUESTS WARM
Even indoors, there can be a nip in the air during the winter months. Be sure your guests are comfy and cozy. First of all, have a coat and boot check available at your venues. No one wants bulky jackets on their chairs or wet boots under the table. If guests wish to keep their coat with them, provide an alternative. A cute basket with shawls or blankets is a fun idea that your family and friends will appreciate. Not that it happens often, but outdoor winter weddings will require heaters upon heaters! A back-up generator may be needed for the extra power. Outdoors, a fire is always pretty, too, but your people may end up smelling a little smoky, which not everyone will be happy about.
Don’t forget
Have you thought about wedding insurance? While not the norm quite yet, it’s a great option for weather-related wedding cancellations. The last thing you want is to go into debt over a blizzard. Check with insurance companies about their policies before buying.
Where ya headed?
Keep the winter good times rolling with a snow-covered honeymoon. Not everyone loves a beach, so hit the slopes, instead! Or, visit a city like Paris, taking advantage of lower rates and fewer tourists.

Wedding Planning Advice from Professional Wedding Planners
Congratulations on your engagement! We have compiled some of our top tips and advice for planning your wedding.
Set a budget
It doesn’t matter if you have unlimited funds to spend on your wedding or if you need to keep a tighter rein on it, everyone should have an amount in their minds that both parties agree on. We can’t control how much you spend or what you spend it on. at is ultimately your decision. As your wedding planner, we will remind you when you are getting close to your speci ed budget and o er suggestions on how best to keep it in check – you can then decide if you want to scale back or spend the new amount (which will ultimately increase your budget). Your guest list has a lot to do with the budget. If you are dreaming of luxury tabletops and orals galore but are nding it hard to stay within your budget, the best solution is to reduce the number of guests to accommodate these dreams. e fewer tables that you have to add your upgraded linens, candelabras and over owing oral centrepieces will save you money. Also, and most importantly, a smaller guest list gives you more time to spend with everyone you care about.
Hire professionals
We are so happy to work with all the amazing couples that we do. We aim to make your wedding day go o without any major bumps or glitches so you can enjoy it to the fullest.
erefore, it is extremely important that your wedding team is compiled of professionals. Chances are when a problem or concern arises, we have seen it before, dealt with it before and know how to x it. is is not the time to take a chance on Aunt Sally’s crumble cake for 120 of your closest friends and family, or Uncle Marco and his brand new DSLR camera to capture your entire wedding day.
is is why a lot of venues in the city will require each wedding vendor to carry their own business insurance (liability and E & O). Let your guests be guests and enjoy your special day to the fullest.
DIY or DIT?
(Do-it-Yourself, or Do-it-Together?)
Are you sure about that? Have you ever looked at DIY fails? Please test out anything that you want to be doing for the wedding at least two months before, just in case it doesn’t look or feel how you wanted. en you’ll have time to order it, move to a plan B or hire someone to do it for you.
Find the perfect DJ
Get wedding liability insurance
We strongly recommend that every couple gets insurance. is is a specialty policy that covers injuries or accidents to you, your guests or the wedding team that might occur during the ceremony or reception. Venues are requiring it more than ever before as it also protects the venue from damage that can occur.
Ultimately the party starts and ends with them. Check references and trust us when we say they are worth the investment. No one wants their dance oor empty and the reception to end early. A professional DJ is licensed and insured (and will also have backup equipment in case things go awry). He/she will read the crowd and change the music accordingly. In your meetings with the DJ prior to the wedding, he/she will ask about what type of music you and your friends listen to and if there are cultural must-haves, as well as the ages of the guests.
Hire a wedding planner
We feel that this is your best tip of the bunch. ere are so many things that need to be investigated. Let a professional break down the tasks and guide you through this wonderful and exciting time, so that it stays that way.
This should go without saying, but we are saying it: Be nice to your vendors!
Treat vendors with respect and kindness. It really goes a long way in the scheme of things. ey are going to be much easier to work with over the course of the planning process and wedding day when there is mutual respect.
BY DANIELLE ANDREWS AND TRACEY MANAILESCU
Book your musthave wedding pros first Wedding ceremony locations, venues and suppliers are getting booked up faster than ever before. If there are certain companies that you really want to have as a part of your wedding day, then make sure they get hired right away. ey are not conrmed until a signed contract has been made.
Don’t procrasinate working on your seating chart Couples never realize just how long this takes, and how frustrating this task is. is is a job that only you and those very close to you can manage, as family and friend dynamics come into play.
Keep the timeline on track Speeches can be the best or the worst part of a wedding reception. We recommend keeping the speeches 3-5 minutes each.
P.S. Parents don’t count for speech time patrol. You are their babies.
P.S.S. We STRONGLY advise against having an open mic as this almost never goes over well.

Check yoself
Have you checked everything o your wedding planning list? Here are a few items that couples often forget.
Get your rings polished. Head back to your jeweller (or any jewellery store, really) and get those bands photo-ready. Cash for tips.
This is a good task for someone in your wedding party so you don’t have to think about it. Have cash on hand – already in envelopes, ideally – to tip the hair and makeup stylists, limo drivers, bar tenders, delivery staff, officiant (some churches consider this a donation, not a “tip”), reception servers, and anyone else you feel deserves some monetary recognition.
Pack for your honeymoon. If you’re leaving the day or two after the wedding, pack your luggage early. You’ll want to relax post-wedding, not rush around searching for your sunscreen and airplane pillow.
Double check the seating chart and place cards. The worst thing for a guest is to feel forgotten or unwelcome. If their name is left off the list, they might feel awkward (which should pass with a signature cocktail or two).
Bring vases for the bouquets. It’s a great way to keep them hydrated at the reception and also add a little floral décor to the head table.
Make sure your wedding party is getting home safely. If you arrived in a limo, that car will most likely be long gone after the reception. Be sure a ride has been arranged for everyone so they aren’t left wondering how to get home. Uber gift cards are a nice touch.
Eat!
Surprisingly, this is commonly forgotten on the big day. Have a filling breakfast. Bring snacks along in the limo and during photos. Be sure to sample the appetizers you so meticulously chose. And indulge in a great meal with a slice of wedding cake.

WINTER READY
Add some cold-weather items to your wedding wish list.
When it comes to registering for your wedding, it’s always best to go seasonal. If you think too far ahead, some of your items may be discontinued or be out of stock by the time the big day rolls around. That being said, you can always start your registry and return to it after a couple months to add new items. Often, couples will forget about adding winter items to their registry, but guess what? We are in Canada, and we all need winter goods! Here are just a few things to add your wedding wish list that will keep you comfy and cozy all winter long.
Coffee maker
Some people can’t begin their day without a cup of coffee, and in the winter that is even more true! When the alarm rings on a cold morning, the first thing many will think of is that warm mug in their hands. If this is you, chances are you already have a coffee maker. Now is your chance to level-up. Add a new machine to your list that has a few more bells and whistles.
GIVE IT A TRY: De’Longhi True Brew Automatic Coffee Machine

Romance is all about the time shared with your person.
BY JIM BYERS
WHAT MAKES A PLACE ROMANTIC?
Iwasn’t prepared for the question. It was my last full day on the Caribbean island of Dominica, and I was chatting with Sharie and Tom Decherd, who run a small hotel called Wanderlust Caribbean Adventure Travel Boutique Hotel in the lush, northeast part of the island.
Sharie knew I was there to gather information for a story about honeymoon places and romantic travel. I’m usually the one asking questions, but she surprised me by lobbying a query my way.
“What do you think makes a place romantic?”
For a moment, I was stumped. It was nearing the dinner hour and I wasn’t running on a full tank. But I think I recovered quickly.
“I guess it’s whatever makes a couple feel closer to one another,” I replied. “It could be a sunset stroll on the beach, but I guess for others it’s a cocktail in a candlelit bar.”
You can nd both of those on Dominica, a small, powerfully beautiful island sandwiched between Martinique and Guadeloupe. But that’s not what this place is known for.
Oh, there are posh resorts that can cater to your every romantic whim. Secret Bay was voted best resort in the Caribbean by Travel + Leisure read-
ers for both 2020 and 2022, when they also voted Dominica the best Caribbean Island.
ere are also golden sand beaches where you can walk hand-in-hand under Instagram-worthy, swaying palm trees, with gentle, jade-green water lapping at your feet. ere’s even a chocolatemaking place in a wooden shack surrounded by leafy gardens and sweet-smelling tropical owers.
But you can nd posh resorts, beautiful beaches and locally made chocolate in a lot of places. What’s harder to nd is a Caribbean island that can o er all those things, plus towering waterfalls plunging over deep-green jungle cli s, dark hummingbirds with iridescent blue chests, wild parrots, one of the world’s best hiking trails and some of the best diving on the planet.
“It’s a great place for a honeymoon or a romantic trip if you’re an adventurous person,” a couple from Seattle told me as they sat at the fabulous, super low-key tiki bar on Batibou Beach. “We came here the other day and we had the place all to ourselves.”
I stayed four nights at the lovely Jungle Bay Resort in the southwest corner of the island on my recent visit. Every morning at breakfast I could hear groups and couples talking about what they

had done the previous day.
“We did a great hike near the Emerald Pool and took a sunset cruise.”
“My wife did a fabulous free dive and I hiked to the boiling lake.”
“It’s more of an adventure place, versus an island where you sit on the beach and drink Mai Tais,” Colorado resident John Harper told me at breakfast one morning. He was sitting with his wife Jenny at the resort’s open-air restaurant, overlooking the Jungle Bay pool and the rugged cape at Scotts Head.
“In a lot of places in the Caribbean you just ll your belly and get drunk, but not here. My wife is a diver, and the diving here is amazing.”
Jenny said the available activities are great, but that they also had found quiet, lonely beaches to explore.
“You can do whatever you want here,” she said. “You can do a kick-ass hike or go to the hotel spa or just relax. e options are endless.”
Dutch visitors Tineke and Peter Van Driel told me they’ve visited 28 Caribbean islands as they look for a place to retire. Dominica was rating
pretty high on their charts.
“It’s just so beautiful, so green,” Tineke said. “We like being someplace exclusive, and that’s what this is. You don’t bump into regular tourists.”
“I think the island’s privacy and intimacy are important,” said Dominique Marchand, a Montreal resident who runs the uber-exclusive Coulibri Ridge hotel in southern Dominica along with her husband, Daniel Langlois. Langlois, an engineer who made it big by designing computer so ware used to make movies such as Jurassic Park and Harry Potter, designed the hotel, which is totally o the grid and features solar power, recycled rain water, and other eco-friendly innovations.
“Dominica’s not overpopulated (roughly 70,000 residents on an island of 750 square kilometers), so it’s easy to nd yourself in nature here,” Marchand told me over a beautiful lunch with local barracuda.
“Also, there’s not much to do at night so you’re not distracted from enjoying each other’s company,” she says with a smile.

e rooms at Coulibri Ridge were designed with high walls for privacy. It’s a tricky drive to get there, and you’re not on the beach, so you might nd yourself almost totally alone.
“We cater our activities to what people like,” Marchand said. “ ere are no big groups; it’s all small and intimate tours. You can drive to town or go kayaking or snorkeling. If that’s too much activity, we can help you with a picnic next to a waterfall.”
“Our resort is really about intimacy and privacy,” Secret Bay Resort’s Samantha Letang told me on a tour of the grounds. Secret Bay was voted best resort in the Caribbean by readers of Travel + Leisure last year. ey also voted Dominica as
the Caribbean’s best island.
“You can get out and explore nature, you can visit a chocolate-making place or you can stay in and order dinner in your villa,” Letang said. “We contact our guests 10 days before they arrive so we can arrange what they wish.”
ere’s a major focus on local cuisine, and the Secret Bay chef made us a fabulous lunch of shrimp with beet roots, greens and avocado; mahi with pureed carrot and fresh veggies with lemon foam, and a “Secret Alaska” dessert with fruit and ice cream surrounded by thick meringue.
“I like to say Dominica is the place for an adventure-moon,” Letang said. “It’s not a y and op destination.”
“We take people hiking, we take them snorkeling and diving, we take them to waterfalls; whatever they want,” said Tom from Wanderlust Caribbean Hotel, who seems to have never met a hike he didn’t love.
at said, it’s not a destination for everyone.
“When people call to check us out I tell them about the island,” Tom explained. “I say, ‘ ere’s no golf course. ere’s no Michelin star restaurant. ere’s no shopping. Do you still want to come?’”
On my last night on the island I dined at Poz, the nickname of Troy “Positive” Dixon, a southern Ontario fellow who ed to warmer climes a a few years back.
“Dominica is unspoiled and not commercialized,” he told me as I tuck into fresh snapper with coconut milk at his open-air restaurant. “I think Dominica it’s for seasoned travellers who love hiking and natural beauty, and real smiles from real people.”
A-list celebrity. Cabrits Resort and Spa Kempinski is a fairly new hotel on the north end of the island with a posh, European feel. There’s a black sand beach and a fabulous swimming pool complex, as well as a romantic fire pit.
WHAT TO DO
The Waitukubuli National Trail covers 183 kms, spanning and twisting the length of this mountainous, rugged island.
Dominica is home to a large group of indigenous natives, who call themselves the Kalinago. You can visit their reserve to learn about their way of life and history. They also have a lively dance performance.
It’s a bit more hilly, but the walk to Trafalgar Falls isn’t hard. You can get up close to two parallel falls, one that tumbles 38 metres and the other 23 metres, but with more oomph behind it
The island offers several hot springs (including, Da Scapes and one called, um, Screws) where you can give your tired bones a soak.
Several companies offer whale watching (Dominica has a group of sperm whales that live here year-round) and sunset cruises. You also can rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards.
GETTING HERE
There are no direct flights to Dominica from Canada, but you can connect from Barbados, Puerto Rico, Miami and Saint Martin. There also are ferries from Saint Lucia, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
STAYING
Jungle Bay has hillside units surrounded by scads of thick greenery. There are two beautiful infinity pools, a nice restaurant and a lovely spa in a garden setting. They do morning hikes and tons of other activities, and
the sunsets are spectacular. Leonardo DiCaprio stayed here recently.
Coulibri Ridge is set on 200 acres of wilderness, with tropical gardens, deep green fields, and the romantic ruins of an 18th century estate. There’s also a small, lovely spa with tables overlooking a high ridge that plummets to the Caribbean, with views of the island of Martinique.
Secret Bay has a series of clifftop villas that are sleek and sexy. Most have amazing ocean views and enough privacy to satisfy the likes of a Hollywood
The entertaining and energetic Bertrand Jno Baptiste, aka Dr. Birdy, can take you on a nature tour of the island to spot local parrots, hummingbirds and other animals.
Indian River offers piloted rowboat rides under a thick canopy of trees, with birds chirping overhead and the odd iguana sunning itself on a branch. Visitors can try a funky jungle bar and see a riverside hut built for one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
It’s a short, easy walk to Emerald Pool, which features a graceful waterfall tumbling into a lovely, pale green pool.
One of the great diving/ snorkelling spots is called Champagne Reef, where natural bubbles emanate from the ground and float to the surface of the ocean. There also are bubbles close to the shore at Champagne Beach. It’s like swimming in a bottle of Dom Pérignon.
Scotts Head has an easy, short hike to a high point overlooking the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, with remarkable views of a deep blue bay and the spikey, jungle clad peaks of south Dominica.
Batibou Beach is a luscious stretch of sand near the funky, seaside town of Calibishie. Sisters Irma and Jacqueline Douglas have a thatched roof tiki hut and fire up amazing lunches served on a deep green banana leaf.

You can also try the 3-hour bike tour of Hollywood. Whichever tour you choose, your guide will be full of Hollywood facts. And a er you walk to the Hollywood sign, get ready to walk again! If you love music, you have to do Jon D’Amico’s Rock ‘n Walk Tour. e 3.5-hour trip up and down Sunset Blvd. will give you insight to the historic music scene of West Hollywood. Tour guide Jonny (former stage manager for Guns N Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, 3 Doors Down and more) is so well connected and full of insider info that you won’t want to miss a word. Don’t be surprised when people are stopping him on the street to say, “Hello.” Everyone in West Hollywood knows this guy. Along the route you’ll make stops at Whisky a Go Go, e Viper Room, famous restaurants and bars frequented by musicians and celebs, plus get a glimpse into the infamous Rainbow Bar, home of the “Hollywood Vampires” club (Alice Cooper, John Lennon and Keith Moon, to name a few). If you’re lucky, you’ll also swing by Mystery Pier Books, a tiny, hidden-away bookshop lled with rare rst editions. Don’t miss the live music in the area. You never know who will show up to play at one of the famous clubs in the area. Whiskey a Go Go is stumbling distance from e London West Hollywood and frequently hosts jam sessions, in which dozens of incredible musicians play all night. You can also give the world-famous Troubadour a try. Either way, break out the leather pants and show o your tattoos.
Stop by one of LA’s newest attractions: the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Go behind the scenes of Hollywood cinema, see movie memorabilia and even hold a real Oscar (It’s true; they really are quite heavy!). e special exhibits change every few months, so there is always something new to see. Don’t skip the gi shop; it’s lled with unique souvenirs that any lm bu would love.
And, of course, no trip to West Hollywood is complete without a trip to Hollywood Blvd.
WEST HOLLYWOOD IS FILLED WITH INCREDIBLE RESTAURANTS. FIGURING OUT WHERE TO START IS THE HARD PART, BUT HERE ARE A COUPLE SUGGESTIONS.
Gracias Madre is an indoor/outdoor vegan (yes, vegan) Mexican restaurant that you have to try. Who knew that vegan queso could be so delicious? The guac is to die for and the mushroom quesadillas will have you drooling.
Merois, Wolfgang Puck’s Asian/French/ Californian restaurant located in Pendry West Hollywood has a mouth-watering menu of dimsum, seafood and dumplings. Your best bet: order a few plates to share because you won’t want to miss anything.
Katana should be your go-to if you’re craving sushi or sashimi. If it’s chilly, sit outside. The heaters will keep you warm!
Bottega Louie will test your willpower. As you walk in, you’re greeted with every flavour of macaron you can imagine, plus pastries and cakes that are just too pretty to pass up. But don’t fill up on dessert first; try the lasagna or pizza before satisfying your sweet tooth.

With the success of shows like Game of rones, the setting of the Northern Ireland Causeway Coast has become a well-known background for dramatic and powerful scenes. Here are six suggestions to make sure you have good craic on your special trip. ese locations are all situated between and in the cities of Belfast and Derry/Londonderry.
BY KATHY BUCKWORTH
You don’t need to take the breathtaking views from the Salthouse Hotel with a grain of salt. ey’re real. But you might, as salt is used throughout this luxury eco hotel, as an homage to the production of salt which helped to form the local landscape. Located in the town of Ballycastle, the hotel is unique in its outdoor connections. e outside courtyard is lled with sculptures and private seating areas, as the doors to the individually appointed rooms form the surrounding wall. You’ll have to tear yourself away from the views of the Atlantic Ocean, but you’ll want to, to enjoy bubbly in the cozy lounge with its impressive bar, before retiring to the gourmet restaurant for an impeccably designed dinner. thesalthousehotel.com

As you walk down the darkened alleyway, you might wonder where you are wandering to. Building on traditional cuisine but with a gourmet air and deconstructed feel, the open kitchen helmed by chef Gareth McGaughey, the seasonal tasting menu with the recommended accompanying wines makes for the perfect intimate dinner for two.

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HONEYMOON GO SMOOTHLY
Consider how much time you have.
Is this a five-day trip? Ten days? Two weeks? If you’re travelling for seven days or less, try to head somewhere with a flight time under 6 or 7 hours. You don’t want to spend 20 percent of your vacation on a plane or at the airport.
Splurge a bit.
This is your honeymoon – a once-in-a-lifetime trip! So if that means spending a few extra dollars to upgrade your seats or have access to the airport lounge, do it. Make this trip as relaxing and easy as possible. Oh, and if room service isn’t included, give it a try once or twice. You’ll be happy that you did.
Know that timing is everything.
If you want to travel immediately after your wedding, consider the weather, hurricane seasons and high/low seasons at your destination. If you have your heart set on a Caribbean vacay and you’re getting married mid-summer, think about postponing your adventures until the fall, when rainy season has passed. It’s still your honeymoon, just delayed a little bit. Consider getting away for a long weekend after the celebrations, just to decompress and kill time before the big trip.
Create a balance of relaxation and busy time.
Being in a new place will mean you’ll want to do all the things, but you also need a break after all the wedding planning. Knock a few things off your must-do list – like ziplining, snorkelling or hiking a volcano – but make space in your schedule for lying around on the beach and getting a couples massage.
Don’t force the romance.
Sure, your honeymoon is about celebrating your love, but it’s also just a trip to enjoy together. If you’re more about dive bars than candlelit dinners, then do you! You don’t need the sunset cruise if you’d rather be at a sporting event. Focus on what makes you happiest.
If you do want to focus on romance, it’s pretty easy.
First of all, disconnect from your phone for a few hours and live in the moment. Take time to look at the stars. Have a midnight swim. Arrange to have a picnic in the sand. Share a bubble bath (with glasses of Champagne, of course). Hit the beach early to watch the sunrise and stay late to watch it set.
Know that you don’t have to be together every moment.
If one partner wants to go golfing while the other visits a monkey sanctuary, feel free to go your own ways. Just make sure you’re both on the same page when it comes to making separate plans.
Tell anyone that will listen that it’s your honeymoon.
You could be upgraded to first class, have some treats or wine waiting for you in your room, or receive discounts or extra desserts at dinner. Sometimes the perks are small, but you’ll appreciate each one.
Do all the logistical stu .
Get travel insurance. Be sure your passport is up to date (must not expire within six months). Make copies of your passport, other ID and itinerary, leaving copies with a responsible person at home and bringing a set with you. Once all your boxes are checked, pack your bags. It’s time for your honeymoon.
This is a tip you’ll want to remember: no sex in the sand! While every rom-com seems to think beach sex, with the waves crashing upon you, is the way to go, it really isn’t. Sand (and salt water) can…get into places, causing infections. Plus, it’s illegal. The last thing you want is to end up at a walk-in clinic or jail on your honeymoon.

MUST-KNOW WEDDING DAY FASHION TIPS
You have your wedding attire. You’re looking good. But how do you make sure that you maintain that level of perfection throughout your wedding day?
TIP #1 Get shoe-ready
Chances are you’ll be wearing neverbeen-worn footwear on your wedding day, so take precautions. Try to break them in around the house before your wedding. Practise walking in heels, if they aren’t normally your thing. Address those slippery soles by scuffing them up a bit so you aren’t slip-sliding down the aisle. Bring bandages, blister stick or an extra pair of shoes in case blisters pop up. Also, be aware of your environment. Stilettos and soft grass/lawn do not mix! You’ll be sinking into the ground pretty quick. Opt for chunkier heels or flats, or purchase heel stoppers – they are small rubber pieces that slide over your heels to make them slightly wider and keep your heels clean.
TIP #2 Shine things up
A good photographer will snap photos of all the details. This means your rings and all other jewelry need to be perfectly polished. Have them professionally cleaned at a jewelry store so your jewels will sparkle. (Be sure your shoes are shined, too!)
TIP #3 Get steamy
Make sure everything is steamed! The best outfit can end up looking terrible if it is filled with wrinkles. Don’t take chances with your dress or suit: enlist a professional do this job. Have it pressed prior to the big day, or ask someone to come to the house to iron out all the details (get it?). This goes for the groomsmen and bridesmaids, too.

today’s FASHION
HERE ARE A FEW WAYS TO STAY STYLING ALL DAY LONG.
TIP #4 Emergency kit
A fashion emergency kit is a must-have. Here are some amazing little tools you should have handy.
A sewing kit, complete with needle, thread and safety pins for fixing minor rips and tears. Toss in some extra buttons for good measure.
White chalk or baby powder can be used to cover stains or marks on a white wedding dress. A stain-removing pen or stain-removal wipes are also a good idea.
Clear nail polish acts like glue and can stop runs in nylons.
TIP #5 Mind the wind
A perfect look can be ruined by pesky gusts of wind, but there are ways you can prepare. If you’re wearing a veil, but have your heart set on an outdoor wedding, have a back-up plan in place. An out-of-control veil will ruin photos and be so annoying it will take you out of the moment. If it’s a breezy day, ditch the veil. Also, guests won’t want to see those perfect undergarments (see tip #7). Have you heard of dress weights? You stick them to the hem of your dress to keep the skirt down and undies hidden.
TIP #6 Learn to tie
It seems silly, but it’s true – many people don’t know how to tie a tie. Before the wedding, try to master this skill, as a tie may need to be adjusted throughout the day. Tying a bowtie is master-level; if you aren’t comfortable, find a pre-tied bowtie. Luckily, most rented suits and tuxes come with ready-to-wear bowties, so you’re safe.
TIP #7 Check your underwear
Wear appropriate undergarments. No, we don’t mean sexy; we mean comfortable. While we aren’t against bra straps in everyday fashion, they have no place on your wedding day. Same goes with bunchy undies or boxers. Purchase well-fitting garments and try them with your outfit ahead of time to be sure they aren’t showing and that you are comfy.
TIP #8 Go extra
Pack extra everything with you – extra shoes, pantyhose, undershirts, tie, dress shirt, etc. Stains happen. Spills happen. Sweat happens. You’ll want to be prepared. You may even consider packing an entirely new outfit for your reception. Consider a second dress or suit that is party-ready.
TIP #9 Wear a bib
We aren’t joking. If you’re eating before the ceremony (which we definitely encourage), then cover yourself up with a bib. And by bib, we mean tucking a beach towel into the front of your dress and covering up as much as possible. A too-enthusiastic toast, for example, could leave you wearing your Champagne, so be extra careful with food and drink.
Double sided tape can be your best friend on your wedding day. Keep those plunging necklines in place!

What cha thinkin'?
When it comes to wedding planning, what’s on your mind? We polled our awesome Instagram followers and here’s what they had to say.
When it comes to décor, what’s your preference when it comes to colour?
All white: 9%
All the colour: 16%
Neutrals: 28%
Pops of colour: 47%
If you’re invited to a wedding, but are unable to attend, should you still send a gi ?
Absolutely: 29%
Not necessary: 30% Maybe send something slightly smaller than what you’d normally do: 41%
SHOULD GUESTS WEAR WHITE TO A WEDDING?
Absolutely not: 87% Sure, that rule has come and gone: 13%
MOMENT OF CRINGE:
We asked the pros: What are the new trends that you’re loving?
DIRECT FLASH PHOTOS.
As a wedding photographer, the direct flash trend is not only a fun way to be creative, but it's also a really great option for couples who are looking to get a more editorial look to their photos. It's a fun way to end off the night.
A FIRST TOUCH.
The couple doesn't see each other before the ceremony, but still has a moment together talking through a door, laughing, holding hands. This is such a unique idea and quickly became a favourite of mine as a wedding photographer.
Choreographed rst dances were really popular for a minute, but how do you feel about them now?
So over: 28%
So cringey: 30%
So cute: 42%
What are the biggest pet peeves at a wedding?
Guests taking photos during the ceremony
The gartertoss – it’s just plain awkward e couple smashing the cake in each other’s faces
A full-day event. It’s so much better when the reception immediately follows the ceremony.
Skipping the place cards and personalizing your menus with the guests’ names. It is a classy way to welcome guests to dine with you. If they pre-selected a meal in their RSVP, have the menu only reflect their meal choice. It’s a much more elevated presentation.
