FEEL-GOOD
GUIDE
While making sure you look your best on your wedding day often sits at the top of the list of priorities, feeling your best is just as important. When it comes to wedding preparations, self-care often takes a backseat. Finding ways to prioritize your mental and physical health can play a key role in stress management and finding balance, which can help you better enjoy the process. We tapped a few experts, who shared some tips for prioritizing self-care for brides and grooms to feel their best ahead of their wedding days. BY LUCY MAZZUCCO

How to be at your best for the big day and beyond – for your body, mind and spirit.
FACIAL MASSAGES When it comes to maintaining a healthy complexion in the months leading up to the big day, Natalie Sischy, CEO of holistic skincare and wellness brand Province Apothecary, recommends facial massage routines for stimulating blood flow, relieving tension and reducing stress. “Ideally, we would recommend starting your facial massage routine at least a couple of months before your big event, like a wedding. However, even a few weeks can make a significant difference,” says Sischy. “The facial massage really helps to stimulate blood flow, which promotes a healthy complexion and that sought-after bridal radiance. It can also enhance lymphatic drainage, which aids in reducing puffiness and achieving a more sculpted appearance.” Sischy also says that massaging specific pressure points can help to relieve tension, alleviate stress and even improve sleep quality. “The temples, for instance, the jawline and cheekbones, can help contour and define your features. To address puffiness, gently glide your fingers over the under-eye area using outward motions to promote lymphatic drainage.” MINDFUL MOVEMENTS Ariel Swan, owner and co-founder of the contemporary movement studio, Jaybird, says it’s important to incorporate mindful movements and yoga into a self-care routine to reduce stress and boost your mood before the big day. “Some of the benefits of practicing yoga on a consistent basis include improved flexibility and strength, reduced stress and the ability to better manage anxiety and depression,” says Swan. “Yoga does this through breathwork, meditation and mindfulness practices, and by promoting relaxation and boosting the release of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters. It has been practiced for centuries and is known for its positive effects on physical health, mental well-being and emotional balance.” With physical health closely linked to mental health, Swan says that besides exercising regularly, it’s also important to eat a balanced diet, drink water and get enough sleep.
pexels-mart-production
EAT CLEAN Along with drinking enough water ahead of the big day, Simon Bennett, co-founder of the wellness brand Sense Naturals, recommends eating Ayurvedic plants and spices such as turmeric, ginger and fennel, which use key fasting protocols to cleanse, restore and renew the body. “Our cellular bodies are made up of 60 to 70 per cent water. Maintaining proper fluid balance is essential for effective oxygen delivery, regulating body temperature and excreting toxins,” says Bennett. “When we are properly
hydrated, we have balanced energy levels, improved brain function, fewer headaches, and better digestion, skin and sleep.” In terms of how long in advance brides and grooms should be eating clean ahead of their wedding days, Bennett says 16 weeks, which is the time frame in which one can lose approximately 7lbs of fat mass and gain 5lbs of lean muscle mass. JUST BREATHE Breathing exercises can also go a long way, according to Bennett, which can help alleviate stress and achieve a calm state ahead of the big day. “Unfortunately, too many of us concentrate on inhalation and never fully exhale leading to over breathing,” says Bennett, adding that this can initiate the body’s stress response and prevent it from being able to adequately use the oxygen it takes in. According to Bennett, this can cause a perceived need to take in more oxygen which leads to inhaling more and a vicious over-breathing cycle.
“Carbon Dioxide, the gas we exhale, has an unfair reputation as being just a waste product when it is actually essential for oxygen exchange and the regulation of our nervous system. Without full exhalation that allows Carbon Dioxide levels to rise in our blood stream, we cannot process all the oxygen we inhale,” says Bennett. “The truth is that exhales are equally as important as inhales for respiration. When it comes to leveraging your breathing to achieve a calm state, we need to put more emphasis on slowing down and extending the exhale.” Along with breathing exercises, Bennett also recommends supercharging the body everyday by viewing sunlight within 30 to 60 minutes of waking up. “Exposing your eyes to morning sunlight stimulates the release of a hormone called Cortisol. This enhances the immune system, increases metabolism, focus and the ability to move the body,” he says. “No windshields, no sunglasses and inside your home does not count.” Just remember not to stare directly into the sun.

While it’s easy to get caught up in choosing a wedding look, brides and grooms often underestimate the importance of prepping skin in advance to ensure a flawless makeup application on the big day. When it comes to skin prep, it goes beyond doing a thorough skincare routine the night before your wedding. Since everyone has unique skin concerns, it’s important to remember that achieving wedding-ready skin will require a little patience and preparation. We spoke to a few skincare experts who gave us the inside scoop (and some product recommendations!) to help brides and grooms achieve healthy and glowing skin in time for their weddings so they can feel their most confident selves on the big day and beyond. “The secret to beautiful skin before an event starts with a good, pre-established routine,” says Marie-Michèle Plourde, training manager at Yves Rocher. “An eye contour cream, for example, is essential to brighten and revive the eyes.” When it comes to tackling specific skin concerns, Daniel Martin, celebrity makeup artist and global director of artistry and education for Tatcha, says it’s best to start prepping skin six months in advance. “I advise against using harsh acids or exfoliants— particularly new ones—in the three days leading up to the wedding day because makeup can’t always cover the texture, peeling or redness it may cause.” For breakout damage control, Nyssa Grays, Dermalogica professional skin therapist, also suggests using an oil-based cleanser prior to a daily cleanser, which can help dissolve excess sebum and debris. “Also, don’t forget to protect your skin from sun damage with an SPF every day. There are many different SPF formulas, so be sure to choose the best one for your skin’s needs,” says Grays.

Beach waves will always be the “easiest” for straight hair or blow drying the hair straight, so there’s no existing texture to fight. You want to first prep your hair by straightening out your natural texture. Don’t worry about getting it perfectly sleek and straight – the point is to neutralize your texture a bit before creating your waves. You can create beach waves with a curling iron or hair straightener or, you can get heatless beach waves by braiding damp hair in pigtails and allowing it to air-dry; after which lightly run a flat iron down each braid. If your hair is naturally straight and tends to go flat after a few hours, prep damp hair with a texturizing and volumizing product, then use your best friend – hairspray – to set it.

PONYTAIL First, decide where to place your ponytail to determine how to create your style, as well as deciding what kind of ponytail look you want: sleek and polished or undone and a little messy. Brush your hair the way you want your pony: For a messy pony, finger comb your strands and don’t worry too much about bumps and fly-aways – embrace them! Pull out a few strands near the face too; for a sleek pony, apply a product to give shine and hold at the same time, then brush your hair in the direction of your ponytail for a smooth, bump-free look. Spray a toothbrush with hairspray and use on baby hairs and flyaways. If you want to add texture to a ponytail, try using a curling iron, or spray volumizing hairspray onto your hair, then use your fingers to mess it up a little or braid the pony and release it when hair is dry. Take a small piece of hair from your ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie or elastic to keep it hidden. Use a bobby pin to hold that strand in place on the underside of your pony and no one will know it’s there.

HOLLYWOOD WAVES Start with a side part. Depending on the length, thickness and texture of your hair, you may want to divide your head into sections so it is easier to work with. Work in a texturizing and volumizing product: take the hair in two-inch sections and start curling about two inches down from the roots. Holding the curling iron at the desired angle, wrap the section of hair around it (clockwise for your right side, counter clockwise for your left). Hold the curl for a few seconds, release naturally and then clip each curl. Repeat this process until finished. Spray it, and after your hair cools off for a few minutes, use a brush to slowly brush through curls. Don’t worry, this won’t undo all your work. If you go slowly and take large sections at a time you should see your curls bounce back but into larger, more voluminous waves. Take curved clips and place them down the length of your waves, where your waves crease. This will help keep their definition while you get ready. Finally, spray your waves with an extra strong hold to lock in your style.

e are entering the year of alternative wedding dresses, they’re bold, undeniably unique and unforgettable approaches to the classic ivory wedding dress,” says Isabel Pittier, of Montreal-based Eddy K Bridals. She cites the designer’s Noire, a black mikado ballgown, and Blume, a multi-coloured floral lace ball gown, both from Eddy K’s 2024 Sky Collection. These gowns aren’t just “giving” looks, but when you choose an Eddy K gown, you also give back, as sales help fund the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting Plan International’s Because I am a Girl initiative to help end child marriage. “Regardless of the daring colours, these wedding gowns respect the classic shape and important elements of a traditional wedding dress, from the ballgown silhouette to the lace and even the dramatic train,” Pittier adds. “These dresses will definitely be a showstopper.” The simply elegant gown is certainly trending, says Madeline Gardner, the designer at Morilee, in a nod to the stunning looks like those we are featuring in this issue’s cover story, “along with the return of soft allover, Chantilly lace gowns, which speak the true language of love.” Considering Morilee has been producing gowns for 70 years, Gardner and her team have plenty of style history to tap into, but with an eye to what’s current. “Each season brings new designs to fulfill our brides’ requests, which brings together our Platinum Collection,” she

says. “Silhouettes range from slim, very fitted with architectural details, to the opulent ball gown using multiple layers and dimensional embellishments. Through it all, there is romance and lightness in every gown of this collection.” Echoing the minimalist elegance vibe is Mikaella Bernstein, social media specialist at Paloma Blanca and Mikaella Bridal, where every gown is crafted in-house in Toronto. “Minimalist elegance is continuing to take centre stage,” she says. “Clean designs, sleek silhouettes and unadorned fabrics are a top choice for brides seeking a timeless look and showcase a bride’s natural beauty and sophistication, and also offer a modern yet enduring look.” And it’s crucial to use highquality fabrics when creating gowns without any embellishments, says Bernstein. Another trend is convertible designs. “We have witnessed a surge in brides seeking versatility in their wedding gowns, and having the option to transform their look throughout the day, without the need for a second wedding dress. For example, matching detachable sleeves.” Colour, too, continues to make inroads. “We have definitely noticed a growing interest in incorporating colour, including various shades of blush and champagne,” notes Bernstein. “Nevertheless, we do find the majority of brides still prefer traditional gowns in white and natural.”

ON THE CATWALK What’s hot from the bridal fashion runways
The Editor’s Take Designers are pulling out all the stops this season, with stunning, ethereal creations and modern yet elegant takes on the quiet luxury and elevated minimalism trends. We’re inspired by icons such as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and ingenues like Margaret Qualley, but runways were also a beautiful blur of heightened romance, vintage references and the strength of femininity meeting architectural edginess.
NADIA MANJARREZ
Romance: When THEIA Bridal presented its Autumn 2024 collection, softness and romance were the key elements. Newly minted design director Karin Gardkvist married old-world corsetry with rich, bias-cut satins and luxe crepe fabrics; light and reflection, pastels and playful femininity. Details included transparent organza lace, asymmetrical back drapes, clever keyhole details and, one very big statement bow in Swiss dot. Devotion: At Nadia Manjarrez Bridal, the designer’s own wedding in Mexico informed her direction. The stained-glass windows of the church where the couple was married, in particular, says Manjarrez. Cascading applique flowers and 3D floral veils; silk organza gowns with contrasting black floral embroidery reminiscent of the black grisaille paint used in stained glass, as do seams, particularly in corsets, to create lines like the unexpected breaks in stained glass.
TODAYS B R I DE .C A • 2 0
Modern Perspective: At Ines Di Santo’s Fall 2024 presentation, the designer says that an artistic study of our relationship between architecture and the ever changing urban landscapes that surround us was the inspiration. Transparent layers over frameworks of corsetry create new voluminous shapes and silhouettes; translucent beaded accents shine, adding texture and dimension. Garden Party: Flowers were everywhere, and designers Esé Azénabor, Dreams by Lihi Hod, and Nardos, all leaned into natural and floral inspo. “I’ve named my fall 2024 collection ‘Blossom’ because each piece celebrates the shapes and textures of flowers in full blossom,” says Azénabor. Drawing from the quiet elegance of nature, The “Petals” collection from Dreams by Lihi Hod is an homage to the delicate beauty yet evocative power of floral allure. For Nardos Imam, it was all about timeless beauty: “I drew inspiration from the texture and blossoming essence of a bride’s journey down the aisle.” Old-World Elegance: Paying tribute to regal femininity and old-world elegance, Reem Acra blended couture styling with intricate yet unassuming designs: “our signature elegant simplicity.” The extras: short dresses, trains, jackets, detachable hoodies, boleros, gloves, and even belts. Highlights included “Refined” – the 3D handmade flowers are the same flowers that adorned the very first wedding dress ever made by the designer.

The Creative Director’s Take Justin Warshaw, CEO and creative director of Justin Alexander Group, references the runways with his take on what’s trending from what he saw at Bridal Fashion Weeks in New York City and Barcelona, as well as his own collection for 2024.

The Veil: The return of the wedding veil is a key wedding trend for 2024. Once seen as dated, it has been one of the most searched items of 2023. Celebrities such as Sofia Richie, Kourtney Kardashian and Olivia Attwood have all recently sported dramatic veils. Kourtney’s fabulously embroidered veil kicked off a trend for personalization. My wife, Kelsey Tuchi Warshaw, chose to have our initials and wedding date embroidered onto her gown and veil to subtly elevate her bridal look and make it truly special. Florals: Florals for spring may seem like an obvious choice for some, but they are more groundbreaking than you think. A new trend for 2024 debuted at New York Fashion week in the form of bigger and bolder florals, looking to push the boundaries of tradition in a whimsical yet feminine way. Laser cut 3D florals have featured in the Justin Alexander Spring/ Summer 2024 collection, adding a striking, contemporary look.
TODAYS B R I DE .C A • 2 2
Separates and Multiple Looks in One: One of the biggest and most innovative trends to emerge from bridal fashion week in Barcelona and New York City for 2024 is wedding dress separates. Brides are looking for more than one ‘look’ for their wedding day and a way for bridal designers to address this, is the arrival of separates. Detachable trains, skirts, capes, and sleeves can all be found in Justin Alexander’s Spring/Summer 2024 collections and offer brides two looks within one dress, transforming a gown from a demure day look to a more relaxed evening look. Going Dark: As the antithesis of tradition, black wedding dresses are an emerging trend for 2024 and have become increasingly popular among Gen-Z brides, who are rewriting the rules when it comes to wedding fashion. A relatively new trend, we predict this will just be the beginning, with many designers featuring at least one black dress in their collections. Justin Alexander has elevated this look by adding beautiful lace sleeves to their black dresses, as well as a dramatic cathedral length veil. Other bridal separates, such as the striking oversized black crepe bow with streamers, can create a wedding look that is bang on trend.

nnerwear as outerwear; lingerie for day; camisoles subbing in for T-shirts – our frilly underthings have been making a revealing statement on fashion’s runways for decades now. And helping set this trend is Christine Morton, who, at 72, is celebrating her eponymous lingerie line’s 50th anniversary – including introducing a Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Collection and a Black Label Collection. The Vancouver-based line started in Morton’s basement with a simple idea, she says: to use the finest fabrics and intricate detail to create feminine, alluring lingerie that made women feel beautiful. Morton’s grandmother provided the inspiration during those humble beginnings in Vancouver. She discovered “a treasure trove of lace” in her grandmother’s dresser drawers, and never looked back. Fast forward to 2023, and the craze for lingerie as part of a woman’s essential wardrobe shows no signs of abating. “Slip dressing hasn’t ever seemed to really go away, especially since the ‘90s,” says Morton. “It’s an easy way to look amazing while also being comfortable. There are also tons of pop culture moments with a fashion focus that highlight slips as outerwear.” Morton notes the Monica and Rachel characters in Friends wearing slips almost every episode, Buffy Summers kicking vampire ass in a slip dress or more recently Grace Hanson from Grace & Frankie lounging about her beachside home in a robe and silk pajamas. “Lingerie plays an important part of every woman’s wardrobe,” she says. “Even in the Edwardian era there was an ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend with the cotton and lace lingerie gowns that were popular during the summers.” With body positivity as an important cultural shift, innerwear trends are embracing a more thoughtful approach to the sexy silhouette. “My designs are about empowering women to feel beautiful inside and out,” says Morton. There is a confidence and underlying sensuality that comes with wearing luxurious silk and lace, she notes, “and I want to inspire people to experience that every day.” That is really the heart of the brand, she adds, and something
she says she’s incredibly grateful that she’s been able to do for 50 years. “I love a good cowl neck,” says Morton, on the subject of modern silhouettes. “It emphasizes the bust for a person who may be lacking in that department, but can also be really sensuous on a more full figured diva. We love lingerie as day and evening wear.” Is there a favourite piece that Morton feels really works from day to night? “A classic slip in a tea length is the perfect transition piece for day to night dressing. Our Lauren Gown is a great example, and our Eydn Slip Chemise if you’re not wanting a longer slip.” Some of her latest designs give a nod to the glamour of the 1920s, but she offers this am to pm styling tip for the here and now: Pair with a blazer and some chunkier jewelry and shoes for the office, and then slip into stilettos and out of the jacket for after-8 pm cocktails.
Slip dressing hasn’t ever seemed to really go away, especially since the 90s
Being an equal opportunist, Morton also designs for the men in our lives. What’s the most popular design or item? “The silk boxers are a hit among the partners of our clients,” she says. “It’s been so fun coming up with matching his and hers sets in silk loungewear!” And what about the wedding night and the honeymoon? “Silk is incredibly light and hardly wrinkles, making it the perfect fabric for lovers on the go,” she says. And Morton’s go-to, mustpack item? “A short, silky slip chemise with a matching robe, a garter – and a loving heart.”

KAT KODIAK & JOEL COFFEY
Embracing Joy & Fun Sharing more than a decade, Kat and Joel started dating back in 2011 and then became engaged in 2018. This Kingston, ON-based couple wanted to stay true to their roots when it came to the wedding, picking a venue that had special meaning to both of them.

Fabulous Food and Lively Music Kept All Entertained: Further showcasing the couple’s style was the all-vegetarian meal, allowing them to be true to their lifestyle. It was big on flavour and bright colours. The DJ helped to round things out and keep the party hopping.

KAT KODIAK & JOEL COFFEY A Waterfront Property with Sentimental Meaning: The wedding venue needed to hold special meaning for the couple, which is why Wolfe Island was chosen. This location wasn’t far from where they came from, helping to make the day even more sentimental. The private waterfront property featured tons of wide open spaces and the “decor” was the natural beauty of Wolfe Island. The couple wanted to infuse a sense of fun and colour into the day, letting that act as the theme. Adding to the uniqueness of the mid-July wedding was the fact all 150 guests arrived by ferry, helping to kick things off from the get-go.

Night at the Museum The couple felt only one place was perfect for their October nuptials, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) which spoke to their love of museums, art, beauty, architecture and history. The ROM’s circular-shaped rotunda was ideal for creating an intimate vibe among the couple’s 80 guests.

Their Couple Style Was Evident In All the Details: “We envisioned a magical evening where guests were enchanted by fairytale ballerinas, gregarious lion dancers, ethereal flowers, and two people in love.” And all of that came to pass. The theme was executed flawlessly thanks to stunning floral pieces, live entertainment, music and a mouth-watering menu that featured dry-aged ribeye and Chilean sea bass. Ballerinas were on-hand to dance during the entrance music and at the end of the ceremony – this time wearing wings to represent their evolution. They “were meant to be symbolic of our transformation from being two singles to becoming a married couple.” The live entertainment and the displays within the ROM played beautifully off each other making for a unique experience.

Taking it to Next Level Here’s a couple that is all about living life to the fullest. Jason and Adrienne met on Tinder and within two weeks decided to meet in person. The sparks flew and both agreed it was the best first date ever. A year later they were engaged and planning life together.

Weathering an Unexpected Venue Change: “Arcadian Loft was able to honour the intimate and minimalistic look we were after,” thereby averting disaster last minute. Adrienne and Jason spent plenty of time imagining the perfect venue and putting the plans in motion. But just 30 days before the wedding disaster struck and the couple found out on Facebook that the venue was in receivership and therefore unavailable. Plenty of tears and stress later it was Arcadian Loft in Toronto to the rescue. All 112 guests were seated in a circle, and couches were sprinkled throughout to ensure the intimate vibe was there. Candles on tables, white tablecloths and napkins in a loft that overlooked the city topped off the scene. And the food was perfect: Another highlight of the event was the menu, which included canapes, a three-course seated meal, a late-night snack and dessert. There was something to appeal to everyone.

SARAH & DEREK LUCZAK
A West Coast Island Wedding For Derek and Sarah their love story didn’t start upon their first meeting, rather it was several years later when they met again that the connection was clear. So Many Memories Shared on the Island: “We were fortunate enough to have the event at one of the most stunning locations with so much natural beauty,” explained Sarah. The couple reside in Vancouver, but it was Hornby Island that held a special place in their hearts. After many memorable vacations there together, and Derek proposing at one of the provincial parks on the island, it seemed like the only logical spot for their wedding to take place. The decor and theme were inspired by the island location, with the ceremony and reception taking place on a stunning private campsite. Keeping the Celebration Intimate: To ensure the event stayed intimate the guest list was small, just 35 people. Live music by a local band and even family and friends performing brought everyone together and put them in a celebratory mood. The menu was kept simple yet tasty, opting for a selection of appetizers, and brisket for dinner, followed by desserts. The September nuptials were relaxed, fun, and romantic just like the couple.

Marriage Mavens Take (some) of the stress out of planning your big day. Here, four reasons why you should say yes to a certified wedding planner so that your celebration is the best it can be.
D
Istockphoto.com
espite many couples’ desire to DIY their big day, there are a million reasons why you should consider enlisting a certified wedding planner to take on the job. From expertise and experience to handling the little things behind the scenes, trusting all that to someone who is specially trained can ensure your marital bliss begins even before the wedding day. “Hiring a certified wedding planner is a decision that can transform your wedding planning experience from stressful to seamless,” says Danielle Andrews, president of the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada, Inc. Andrews, who is also a destination wedding consultant, adds, “Certified wedding planners undergo specialized training and education in the intricacies of wedding coordination, ensuring they are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle every aspect of your special day. Their certification signifies their commitment to excellence and professionalism in the industry.” To make wedding planning enjoyable and secure, it’s important to invest time in vetting reputable vendors, advises Andrews. Read reviews, seek referrals and meet them in person. Sound like a lot? It is, so you may want to consider hiring a certified wedding planner to handle this for you. Andrews gives us her top-four list of why it makes sense to go with a pro.

4 It’s a good idea to provide late-night food options. Long hours between dinner and the end of the celebration can leave guests hungry. Consider dessert or simple snacks like pizza. 5 Don’t skip the wedding cake. Many guests look forward to it as a tradition and miss its absence. By addressing these considerations, you’ll create a joyful and inclusive atmosphere, ensuring your wedding is memorable for everyone involved.
Reason #4
Reason #1 A certified wedding planner or coordinator sweats the big – and the small – stuff, including helping set your budget When you hire a certified wedding planner, you’re tapping into a wealth of expertise that extends from budget management and vendor selection to timeline creation and crisis resolution. Their experience not only ensures a smooth planning process but also reduces the risk of costly mistakes and oversights, ultimately saving you time, money, and unnecessary stress. Moreover, a certified wedding planner serves as your trusted advocate throughout the planning journey. They become your go-to resource for guidance, recommendations and creative ideas that align with your vision and budget. With their extensive network of reputable vendors, they can help you secure the best deals, ensuring that you get the most value for your investment. Beyond logistics, certified wedding planners are skilled in curating personalized, unique experiences that reflect your personality and love story, making your wedding day truly unforgettable. Their meticulous attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to flawless execution provide you with peace of mind, allowing you to relax and enjoy every moment of your wedding day with confidence and joy.
They have your back when you need back up or the unexpected strikes Planning for contingencies is a crucial aspect of wedding planning that ensures your big day proceeds smoothly, regardless of unexpected challenges. One of the most common contingencies to consider is the weather, particularly for outdoor weddings. Having a backup plan in place, such as securing an indoor venue or renting tents, can save the day in case of inclement weather. This thoughtful preparation prevents last-minute stress and disappointment, allowing your wedding to continue without a hitch. Additionally, couples should strongly consider wedding insurance to protect their investment. Wedding insurance can provide financial coverage in case of unforeseen circumstances, such as vendor cancellations, extreme weather conditions or personal emergencies. This safety net offers peace of mind and can mitigate financial losses in the event of unexpected setbacks, ensuring that your wedding day remains a cherished memory rather than a source of stress. Planning for contingencies demonstrates your foresight and commitment to a flawless wedding, even in the face of the unexpected. You can find a list of certified wedding planners, including a list of onsite destination wedding experts, at The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada’s website: wpic.ca. Danielle Andrews, is a certified wedding consultant, coordinator and planner, and the president of The Wedding Planners Institute of Canada Inc.
Reason #2 Peace of mind While it’s touching that loved ones want to help with your wedding, relying solely on professionals is crucial for various reasons. Hosting a significant event like a wedding means you share legal responsibility with your venue for guest safety. Trusted wedding professionals possess the education, experience, industry knowledge and insurance needed for a smooth event. Imagine this scenario: well-meaning Aunt Edna creates your wedding cake with fresh flowers, causing more than a hundred guests to fall ill due to floral preservatives. Would you be ready to take legal action against her? Entrusting professionals ensures a high-quality celebration and safeguards your loved ones from unexpected issues.
Reason #3 Make the guest experience seamless Your wedding isn’t just about you, Andrews notes; it’s an opportunity to create cherished memories with family and friends. Consider your guests who invest time and money to celebrate with you. Ensuring their enjoyment is key in wedding planning. But it’s not always easy. Here are common guest complaints and considerations, according to Andrews: 1 The cost of attending weddings can be high. Consider factors like timing, childcare, travel, and accommodations when planning. 2 Prioritize guest comfort. Provide seating, restrooms, climate control, and small comforts like shade or blankets. Keep your schedule on track to avoid guest wait times. 3 Be considerate of dietary needs and allergies. Offer menu options that accommodate guests with special dietary requirements.

PUTTING THE “WOW” IN YOUR VOWS Ping-Pong Promises Consider writing your vows together by highlighting the things that matter to you most. Then ping-pong your promises one vow at a time. This can serve as a fun relationship-building exercise and prove to be an entertaining exchange for your guests.
Printed Promises Personalized vow books are cute, but they’re not original. If you’re gamblers, consider dealing out your “I Do’s” on oversized playing cards. If you’re board-game or role-play enthusiasts, roll out the Magic and D&D when saying “I take thee.” If you’re restaurateurs, serve up your vows on a makeshift menu. If you’re travellers, transform a postcard into yet another keepsake.
Promises-in-Private
TAKE THE “OW” OUT OF YOUR VOWS
Sometimes, we’re at a loss for words, especially when we’re emotional. We asked The Marry Men to share a few tips for when it’s time to say I Do.
Vow in the now. Approach your vows from the perspective of “from this day forward” rather than reflecting on “the way we were.” Focus on the exciting journey ahead of you rather than looking back on how you got here. Many good officiants pride themselves in telling the story of how you met and what has brought you to this very moment in your ceremony. Speak your love language. Every couple has a language that is
uniquely their own, so include your nicknames, inside jokes, personal anecdotes and endearing quirks to make your vows more personal and meaningful. Remember, these vows are being made between the two of you. Your guests are there to witness them. Speak from the heart. Your vows should be sincere and heartfelt expressions of your love and commitment. When writing your own wedding vows, imagine what your partner might be promising you. Think about the qualities you admire in your partner and the qualities you want to nurture in your marriage. Speak with a smile. Wedding vows should be short and sweet, so aim for around one to two minutes. Practice speaking your vows out loud and with a smile. Decide whether you’ll be using a mic or not. If you’re not a public speaker, ask your officiant to coach you through one of the biggest performances of your life.

A vow is a promise and wedding vows are promises that are made to be spoken. You don’t have to be a poet, playwright or politician to put your promises to paper. Get inspired by reading examples of wedding vows, quotes about love and relationships, or even passages from books or lyrics from songs that resonate with you. To write your own wedding vows, discuss the tone, length and style with your partner. Then start writing and don’t worry about getting the words down perfectly on the first try.
Many couples are opting to exchange vows privately either during their “first look” or in an intimate moment just prior to the ceremony. More traditional vows can be saved for the ceremony, but taking a few minutes to be together and sharing the sentiments you have scripted can set the tone for your wedding day and your marriage.

t o d a y ’s P L A N N I N G | T H E S P E E C H Here, we get EllertMcDermott’s do’s and don’ts, to help get you, your groom, or anyone who you have asked to speak for you on your wedding day, inspired to write a meaningful, humorous wedding speech.
YOUR WEDDING SPEECH IST CHECKLIST Before we start gathering content, let’s look at what we want (and don’t want). This is based on a Speechy checklist that I created for our team of writers.
ENSURE ◆ Humour within the first 20 seconds
◆ A welcome that feels more than a cut and paste job
◆ An insight into your relationship ◆ At least one great anecdote ◆ A tribute to your partner that’s unique, honest and meaningful
◆ Thank yous that are genuinely
Of all the things with wedding planning, the speeches may be the most agonizing. If you’re making speeches a part of your big day, we’ve got you covered. Here, Vivian Vassos gets some good advice from writer Heidi Ellert-McDermott, and her new book. “When it comes to wedding speeches, most people are novices so it’s no surprise you need help,” writes Heidi Ellert-McDermott, in the introduction to her new book, The Modern Couple’s Guide to Wedding Speeches: How to Write and Deliver an Unforgettable Toast. Before founding UK-based Speechy Wedding Speeches (speechy.com), Ellert-McDermott was a TV writer/producer/director, but it was the high praise and positive reaction she received after delivery of her own bridal speech that prompted the move. “And, even if you’re a ‘seasoned pro,’” she adds, “this book can still help you improve on your efforts.” The advice Ellert-McDermott gives is universal: it doesn’t assume you’re male, straight, have a questionable sense of humour or are incapable of having a unique thought, she writes. Though, if that is the case, it will help you with at least two of those, she adds. “This book is for any couple who knows a great wedding speech is worth investing in; the 60-year-oldones, the childhood sweethearts (it happens),
the traditional folk, the couples with two penises, the religious duos, the second-timers and the all-out weirdos.” Ellert-McDermott does assume two important things about any couple getting married and looking to say a few words: “1) you’re in love; and 2) you know that a wonderful wedding speech will add an awesome moment to your day.” Every speech needs to have humour in it – whether or not you’re a naturally funny person, she advises. “And women need to be bolder about grabbing the mic” (Currently only 20 percent of Speechy’s clients are women, she notes.) Try to avoid white-noise adjectives like “beautiful” and soulmate,” and do not use Googled gags. Traditional wedding speeches don’t really fit the modern wedding ideal, she says – there’s no need to toast the bridesmaids, deliver eulogies to those that have passed, or thank guests who have travelled from a distance to celebrate your day (you should, however, always thank those guests personally).
‘One trend I’ve loved seeing take off over the last few years is joint speeches from couples. It’s a great way to kick off your marriage as a real unit.’ —HAMISH SHEPHARD

throughout
◆ An emotional sucker punch and/or a killer line
As well as the ‘to do’ list, we inevitably have a ‘please, don’t’ list…
AVOID ◆ Cliches and platitudes ◆ Googled gags or wedding speech jokes
◆ Edgy humour or OTT swearing ◆ A long list of thank yous ◆ Handing out gifts ◆ A eulogy to the dearly departed ◆ Unnecessary wedding waffle ◆ Too many adjectives, not enough evidence of them
Some points seem more nebulous than others but it’s a great list to refer to prior to writing your speech, and something to check against after you’ve written your first draft.
Checklist is excerpted with permission from The Modern Couple’s Guide to Wedding Speeches: How to Write and Deliver an Unforgettable Toast, which was published in September 2023.

PLACE
SETTING
Today’s Bride:
When it comes to a destination wedding, having a planner who lives and works in the places you’re considering is a bonus. Here, Marsha-Ann Donaldson-Brown, Director of Weddings & Romance, Sandals Resorts International, gives Vivian Vassos the inside scoop.
Favourite destinations for a destination wedding?
Marsha-Ann Donaldson-Brown: All of our Caribbean islands are beautiful and unique in their own way, so I’m hard pressed to pick a favourite, but some of our newest resorts are located in some pretty spectacular destinations, including the captivating island of Curaçao (our first resort in the Dutch Caribbean) and, of course, Jamaica (with an incredible seven Sandals on the island, including the new Sandals Dunn’s River) remains a popular choice for Canadian couples planning a destination wedding. TB:
Any new, up-and-coming destinations you’re seeing?
MDB: Curaçao is a fascinating island that has definitely caught the attention of more and more couples over the past year or so. Its fusion of European and Caribbean cultures offers a wealth of experiences for couples to enjoy. I’m enthusiastically recommending that everyone puts Saint Vincent and The Grenadines on their radar! This island epitomizes a hidden gem in the Caribbean that remains undiscovered with its lush tropical rainforest, towering waterfalls, pristine beaches and so much more. It also happens to be our latest destination for Sandals when we unveil our newest resort in Spring 2024. It will feature an overwater wedding chapel and an intimate riverside pavilion. TB: How far in advance should you start planning a destination wedding? MDB: On average, planning 9-12 months in advance is generally a good idea, especially if the couple has their heart set on a specific date with sentimental meaning to them. This also allows ample time for family and friends to make plans to come along and share in the couple’s special day. But, we can even make wedding dreams come true for couples who decide to get married just 30 days in advance. All we need are two people in love and their legal documentation for us to be able to have them say “I do.” We take all the stress and worry out of the entire planning process.
TODAYS B R I DE .C A • 88
TB:
What about a budget? How does a couple set that?
MDB: I always encourage couples to start by making a checklist of what’s important to them. Do they envision a small or large wedding? They’ll also need to consider if any of their friends or family will be able to travel to the location for their wedding – and how easy (or difficult) it will be for them to get there. What types of features and amenities are they looking for at the resort or the destination? For instance, do they want to enjoy golf or scuba diving during their trip? Having a checklist helps couples stay focused on what’s most important to them. In addition, our “Aisle to Isle” wedding packages are designed to scale based on amenity preferences and group size, so that definitely helps with pre-determining costs.
ʻʻTake it easy and let your
The one thing everyone forgets (except the expert destination wedding advisor)
wedding dream team take care of all the details ʼʼ
TB:
MDB: Remember to have fun! Take it easy and let your wedding dream team take care of all the details. I mean, where else can a bride spend a few hours relaxing on the beach or the groom play a round of golf before their wedding? This simply doesn’t happen back at home, but it is an everyday occurrence at Sandals Resorts.
Do you recommend the couple visit the destination prior to the wedding? TB:
MDB: It really does depend on the couples’ preferences and comfort level. For those who wish to visit in advance, they can take advantage of our popular “Test Drive Your Wedding & Honeymoon” experience. Couples can stay up to three nights [for a preferred rate], get a sneak preview of their dream wedding and a taste of their honeymoon. It’s an amazing opportunity to literally take your destination wedding and honeymoon for a test drive, explore the venues, taste the wedding cake, sample various menu items, and immerse yourself in all that the resort has to offer.
TB: Do you always recommend the couple to honeymoon in the same place as their destination wedding? MDB: This really depends on the couple and where they’re getting married, as well as the composition of their wedding guests. For instance, in Jamaica, if there are children attending the wedding, it’s a great idea to host the wedding ceremony and reception at our kidfriendly Beaches Resort but afterwards, the couple can sneak off to a nearby Sandals Resort to start their honeymoon. TB:
Favourite honeymoon destination?
MDB: This is a very tough question to answer! Can I just say the Caribbean? sandals.com/weddings

Thinking about taking your hen-do on the road? Here, Jen Mallia gets the expert view on how to make your destination bachelorette party extraordinary – along with a few fun places to consider.
ou’re not an ordinary bride, why would you want an ordinary bachelorette celebration? For some brides, the way to make the party extraordinary is by turning it into a trip. Before you dive into the fun of where to go and what to do, consider who will join you. Ann Elizabeth Burnett, president and founder of Elizabeth Etiquette in Vancouver, says: “Who you choose to put on your guest list is integral to the success of the event.” You’ll want to think about guests’ compatibility with each other, interests, activity level and ability, and budget. Avoid what Burnett calls “obligatory invites”—people you invite out of duty, not because you want them there. Suggest an intown date instead. Similarly, understand that everyone you invite for your destination bachelorette may not be able or willing to attend. Some guests might choose to attend only part of the trip, and that’s okay. Toronto-based bride-to-be Emily Rivas is planning a his-and-hers getaway in the Niagara region. She hopes the trip will be a chance for the wedding party to get to know each other better in a relaxed environment before what can feel like the high-stakes of the big day. Rivas chose to stay close to home, as combining the bride’s and groom’s party means the guest list will be relatively large and planning could get unwieldy. The other consideration is budgetary. With several up-coming weddings in their social group, adding undue financial pressure is something Rivas wants to avoid. Burnett suggests details be shared well ahead of time so people can budget and arrange the time away. A group chat, tripplanning app like Pilot, and the Splitwise app for cost-sharing, are helpful resources. For some, it’s a chance to go all out. Edmonton bride Jazmine Fernando found San Francisco an ideal mix of nightlife and daytime outdoorsy adventures. For her group, the four day trip was a chance to splash out since many of their friends had opted for local bachelorette celebrations. “It’s hard to plan every second of a trip when you have that many people with their own ideas and opinions,” says Fernando, who suggests planning one daily group meal and activity, with time for people to do things on their own if they choose. Joey Silver, a travel consultant with Expedia Cruises, Air and Travel in St. Albert, says Las Vegas remains a perennial favourite for gal pal getaways. Nashville is also popular, while those looking for something tropical are fond of the beaches and resort prices in Cuba and
Pacific Sands Beach Resort
the Dominican Republic. Using a travel agent can help take pressure off whoever is doing the planning. The agent will be the locus of communication, plus they may have access to rates and experiences you can’t get otherwise. Staying in Canada means no passports or exchange rates to worry about. Check out these Western Canadian trips, tailored for the bride who wants something a little different.
Laid back beach vibes in Tofino The far west coast has ample opportunities for R&R with friends. TO DO: Take a wildlife tour on the ocean with Clayoquot Wild Tours and make brunch reservations at The Pointe at the Wickaninnish Inn. Lux.Fino can arrange a picnic right on the beach that will be the most luxurious you’ve ever experienced. STAY: There are a variety of accommodations at the Pacific Sands Resort, from the sprawling Sunset House that sleeps 10 to more modest studio rooms. Get out in the waves with a lesson from Surf Sisters, then warm up in the private beachside barrel saunas at Tuff City saunas, both located at the resort.

Off-beat fun in Saskatoon
Foodie treats in Calgary
For those who like their fun with a side of quirky, Saskatoon can’t be beat.
Calgary has more cooking than just cowboy fare. For a gourmand bride and her entourage, we can’t think of a better place to set out on a tour of culinary delights.
TO DO: Climb behind the wheel of a race car at Sutherland Automotive Raceway’s Race Experience to satisfy your need for speed. Stop by the opulent tasting room at Lucky Bastard Distillery for a cocktail class, or enjoy a floating picnic and paddle boarding with Back2Nature Wellness and Adventures.
TO DO: Be transported to another world for dinner at Fortuna’s Row, try the decadent chocolates at Cochu, shop local delicacies at Greenbriar Market, and sample your way through Calgary Farmers’ Market West. Sweat it all out with some hydrotherapy at SKA Thermal Spa.
STAY: The funky Alt hotel is located on the pretty banks of the South Saskatchewan River, beside the Remai Modern Gallery and its world renowned collection of Picasso lithographs. It’s also an easy walking distance to the unique restaurants and shops of the Riversdale neighbourhood. Don’t pass up the chance to buy a cozy hoodie (“bunnyhug” in Saskatchewanese) from Hardpressed Print Studio.
STAY: The elegant rooms of The Westley make a relaxing spot to pull on your stretchy pants. Even better is the Fonda Fora restaurant in the lobby that features upscale Mexican food and cocktails that taste like summer. Just around the corner (on the top floor of The Dorian Hotel) is The Wilde, an art decoinspired lounge with witty, inventive drinks inspired by namesake Oscar Wilde.

t o d a y ’s P L A N N I N G Princess Cruises offers both symbolic and legal weddings as well as engagement events, vow renewals and, soon, “Weddings Ashore.” CELEBRITY CRUISES Another contemporary cruise line, Celebrity Cruises, offers couples the options of proposal events and vow renewals, as well as symbolic or legal wedding ceremonies, onboard or ashore. The cruise line has a Marriage License Coordinator to help couples do the paperwork for legal weddings in different jurisdictions: in international waters by the ship’s captain, on the ship in port, or ashore. Packages include indoor or deck venue, private reception, food and beverage service, fresh flowers, cake, champagne and a photographer – all coordinated with event managers before your wedding cruise, and handled onboard by wedding coordinators, so all you have to do is relax on your cruise. In certain ports – and only on embarkation day – couples can even invite guests who aren’t passengers onboard to celebrate their wedding.

omance and cruising go hand in hand: sparkling seas and exotic shores, gentle breezes as you and your beloved stand against a teak rail and gaze into infinity. Add in the ease of unpacking once, having your every need taken care of onboard, and a built-in idyllic honeymoon, and no wonder more and more couples are planning destination weddings, vow renewals and even engagement events on cruises. Not all cruise lines offer weddings. Some offer legal ceremonies, while others are symbolic. Most cruise lines that offer weddings have pre-cruise and onboard specialists to ensure your event goes according to plan – stress-free! Is it your dream to be married on an open deck by the ship’s captain? You can have that dream wedding – on your own or surrounded by family and friends. A professional travel advisor knows the different cruise lines, ship and itinerary fea-
tures, plus offers and packages to give you the best options. Here’s how four, very different cruise lines do weddings at sea: PRINCESS CRUISES It’s the actual, original “Love Boat.” Princess Cruises takes its romance legacy seriously, with a dedicated wedding program. The cruise line recently appointed a “Love and Romance Ambassador.” Bridal designer and TV host Randy Fenoli has introduced new, designer wedding packages exclusively for Princess Cruises. In “Princess Perfect Weddings,” ship captains serve as officiants, and all packages include wedding specialists helping couples plan pre-cruise and onboard. Packages can be customized with choices of indoor or outdoor ceremonies, fresh flowers, wedding cakes, sparkling wine toasts, photography, live music, bridal hair and makeup and more.

WINDSTAR CRUISES Small-ship cruise line Windstar offers some of the most romantic itineraries at sea, including a long-standing specialization in Tahiti itineraries. And since ships host only between 150 to 350 guests, some couples even charter an entire sailing for their celebration, so you’re surrounded only by friends and family for your entire cruise. Windstar offers only symbolic ceremonies for couples who have already taken care of the legalities. And the cruise line offers two types of packages: with or without a vow exchange ceremony officiated by a ship captain. The vow exchange ceremony package comes with bridal and venue flowers, cake, champagne and canapés, photography and customized add-ons like long-stem roses, afternoon tea or even an overnight stay in a romantic overwater bungalow in Tahiti with private dinner on a beach and breakfast delivered by canoe. It’s irresistibly romantic: Windstar’s president recently renewed his own wedding vows during a Tahiti cruise. Lynn Elmhirst is the producer and host of World’s Greatest Cruises on PBS

CUNARD British luxury line Cunard’s captains have been performing weddings onboard for more than 180 years. For modern times, the line also now offers vow renewal and engagement ceremonies. Nothing lends elegance and ceremony to your special day like Cunard’s white-gloved service, Art Deco décor, making your entrance down the stairs of the Grand Lobby escorted by a red-capped Cunard bellhop, and stately fine dining. The line offers private indoor celebration venues for ceremonies of various sizes, and will permit larger groups to take over one of the ship restaurants for a lunch-time reception. It’s all coordinated by pre-cruise and onboard Ceremonies Specialists, who plan and ensure smooth execution of your chosen flowers, music, cake and champagne, catering, photography, port experience and more.

Food is a huge insight to the culture while in a new city, country and certain regions of the world. If you love to travel, exploring the culinary side of a new destination is part of the experience. From luxury, multi-course dinners to street food and markets, explore what these locations have to offer on your honeymoon. Scalloping in Port Richey, Florida
If you fly into Tampa and head to Pasco County, Port Richey has a lot to offer. From unique hotels, to beautiful street art, and unpretentious places to eat, Port Richey has a lot to do, including adventurous activities like diving for your own scallops. If you’re a Hilton member and want a reliable chain, the Homewood Suites by Hilton Tampa-Port Richey is a good option. If you’re looking for a place to stay with a boutique feel, local to the area, check into The Hacienda, a Classic 1927 Florida Hotel. The rooms are minimalistic, but the property itself is stunning and full of history and charm.

If you’re looking to travel through Scotland to multiple destinations, Brendan Vacations is the ideal company to utilize. They put together beautiful experiences, covering territory in Scotland, based on the couple’s interest and organizing the travel in between cities. Beginning in Edinburgh, check into Edinburgh Holyrood Hotel, just a 15-minute walk to the hop on hop off bus tour start point. The bus may seem a little touristy, but it’s great for sightseeing quickly throughout Edinburgh, with stops at Edinburgh Castle (buy entry tickets ahead of time, they sell out quickly), The Royal Yacht Britannia, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to name a few, without spending a fortune on Ubers. The Edinburgh Food Tour with Eat Walk Tours is a great way to try some local Scottish food and drinks, while roaming around Old Town and the Georgian New Town. Try haggis (a savoury pudding traditionally made with sheep organs like the heart and liver, mixed with oats, onion, seasoning and suet), Cullen Skink (a smoked Scottish creamy fish chowder), Scotch Eggs, and more. Don’t worry, there’s a vegetarian haggis if you’re not feeling adventurous. After the tour, head over to Wedgwood for sticky toffee pudding followed by cocktails at The Alchemist. Take the Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour Experience for a highly immersive tour with a personalized flavour profile pairing to your liking and of course, a couple of cocktails. Take the ScotRail to Inverness and check into the Kingsmills Hotel before embarking on the Inverness Isle of Skye & Eilean Donan Castle Day Tour the next day with Rabbies Trail Burners. During the tour you’ll see major sights along the Isle of Skye like the Kyle of Lochalsh, Eilean Donan Castle, the colourful town of Portree with amazing fish and chips for lunch at Cuchullin, Trotternish Peninsula, the Cuillin Mountains and, of course, Loch Ness. Take the train to Glasgow and check into the Leonardo Hotel Glasgow before taking the Glasgow Wee Walk and a Whisky with Walking Tours Scotland. Throughout the guided tour, you’ll try multiple whiskies in local pubs and explore what the city has to offer. Babbity Bowster is a great spot for dinner after the tour with phenomenal Cullen Skink, Crab and Prawn Linguine and Sticky Toffee Pudding, among other dishes.
in the area are Whiskey Joe’s for amazing seafood and BBQ. Their Strawberry-Guava Rib Basket is on another level, with perfectly cooked ribs painted with a strawberry-guava barbecue glaze. The Social NPR is the ideal place to enjoy fresh seafood like Shrimp Tacos loaded with boom boom sauce and ginger slaw while taking in the views from the rooftop. Stop into Cotee River Creamery & Desserts for homemade ice cream and fun flavours like Key Lime Pie and Lavender Honey.
Hop Scotch: Get your tartan on – bagpipes and caviar, skink and the Isle of Skye, chowder and haggis, Scotland’s culture and cuisine make for heady heartiness

Island Time
If sun, sand and surf are on your honeymoon getaway list, Barbados ticks all the boxes. Here, a guide to what to do, where to go and places to stay. BY AMY BIELBY
If you’re looking for an intimate honeymoon destination filled with unique experiences and adventure, combined with a relaxed, private vibe, then Barbados may be the ideal location. Expect it all from this Caribbean Island – mouth-watering cuisine, the bluest of waters, friendly atmosphere and, of course, all the rum you could ever want. PICK YOUR PLACE
Barbados has some truly unique accommodations, so don’t limit yourself to one. Spoil yourself by indulging in a couple of different properties. Start in Saint James at The House by Elegant Hotels. This adults-only, all-inclusive resort is a beauty. With just 34 rooms and suites, this might be the romantic escape you’ve been looking for. The service is personal and unparalleled, with many staff greeting you by name as you enter the lobby or restaurant. Every guest receives a complimentary 30-minute “jet lag” massage to begin their stay (you can head to the spa or have the massage in your room). Continue the relaxation on the beach, with soft sand under your toes, surrounded by turquoise waters. If you’re looking for activity, partake in some yoga or water activities, and then top the night off with a delicious meal at Positano, an Italian delight with handmade pasta and pizza. This high-end dining experience is included in the all-inclusive package. Consult with the romance concierge if you’d like to spice things up with a dinner on the beach or other date-night ideas.

Next, move to Crystal Cove by Elegant Hotels, another boutique hotel that sits atop oceanfront cliffs (not too high – just enough to give you breathtaking views from your balcony). While this is not an adults-only property, it is still quiet and intimate. The lagoon-style pools (complete with waterfall) are the perfect place to soak up the sun and take a dip to cool off. Then grab a drink at the unique Cave Bar or visit the coffee bar for a little pick-me-up. The dine around program allows you to experience restaurants at the Elegant sister hotels, and the complimentary water taxi will get you there just in time for apps. FOOD AND DRINK
Every meal in Barbados is a delight. Head to the St. Lawrence Gap (known affectionately as The Gap) and choose from a street full of restaurants and bars. The nightlife here is second-to-none on the island. A recommendation: Cocktail Kitchen. Ask any of the locals for a great place to eat and this will be their answer. The Thai Fish Cakes are a delicious bite, and the Caribbean Seafood Curry will warm your belly. Visit Calma Beach Club for a laid-back meal on the beach. The menu is filled with delectable local, sustainable options that will satisfy any craving. They have a large selection of gluten-free and plant-based options that are as tasty as anything else on the menu. If you’re a rum drinker, you’ll love the options in Barbados, which is widely considered to be the birthplace of rum. You can’t miss the tasting at the Mount Gay Rum Distillery. Learn the methods behind creating the spirit and then do a little taste-testing. (You’ll absolutely need a designated driver for this excursion; those shots will catch up with you quickly.) St. Nicholas Abbey is another option for those who like rum with a side of history. The beautiful grounds are a sight to behold, and then you’ll end with a look at the distillery and a taste of the award-winning recipe.
DO ALL THE THINGS
It will be difficult to fit every activity into your honeymoon, so prioritize the can’t-miss fun. Put a day at Carlisle Bay at the top of your itinerary. Set up camp at Harbour Lights Barbados by renting a couple of lounge chairs and an umbrella on the beach. Spend the day in the sunshine sipping on cocktails (delivered right to you on the beach) and wading in the ocean. But be sure to make time for the turtle and shipwreck tour. A boat will take you and your snorkelling equipment on a very short ride, where you will jump out and explore the underwater world. Afterwards, head to the grill for some snacky-snacks (including jerk chicken – yum!). If you enjoy being on and in the water, then a catamaran cruise should be up next. Go with a group or splurge on a more private sail. Again, the snorkeling is incredible, with thousands of fish swimming to greet you, along with Hawksbill turtles, green turtles and leatherback turtles. Then enjoy a romantic sunset on the ocean. Visit Animal Flower Cave, a gorgeous cave with several chambers that provide stunning views. Don’t forget your bathing suit because in the last chamber, you can take a dip in a natural rock pool. Afterwards, visit the restaurant for some rum cocktails and a tasty lunch. And if you aren’t exhausted by then, maybe a round of golf is in order. Sandy Lane Golf & Country Club has three courses to choose from, with varying degrees of difficulty. Hit the pro shop to rent clubs, then join your caddy for a challenging 9 or 18 holes. Barbados is truly an a-la-carte style honeymoon. Pick and choose exactly what you want, and then indulge in all the unique aspects the island has to offer. It’s a magical place, and you may end up returning for your anniversary! visitbarbados.org
