Meds

To the rescue!

Include medications for any ailments that might pop-up during the day. Think antacids, anti-nausea medication, pain relievers, allergy meds (non-drowsy) and any regular medication you take. Bandages, blister stick and eye drops should also be added to your mini first aid kit.

Don’t be stressed when little things go wrong on your wedding day. Instead, be prepared. Your wedding reception is a time to celebrate and have fun – the last thing you want is a tiny mishap to rain on your parade.

Shoes

Makeup

New shoes may look pretty, but can turn your feet ugly quickly. Pack some comfy footwear for both him and her so you can hit the dancefloor pain-free. It wouldn’t hurt to toss some extra socks into your bag, too. (Oh! And extra shoelaces!)

Don’t forget your makeup kit, with your lipstick, mascara and powder. Remember to pack blotting pads and makeup remover, as well. Some waterproof mascaras don’t hold up to wedding day tears.

Toiletries Deodorant, perfume, cologne, mouthwash, and toothbrush and toothpaste – all the ingredients to keep you smelling lovely all evening.

Hair accessories If you have the room for it, bring a mini curling iron or straightener, hairspray, gel/ wax, bobbi pins, hair ties/ elastics and a brush, of course.

Weather items If you’re having an outdoor/afternoon reception, sunscreen is a must. In the evening? Bug spray! Make sure to have these items on hand for your guests as well.

Stay on top of your look with all the necessary tools: a sewing kit, safety pins, double-sided tape, stain remover, lint roller, scissors and white chalk (the chalk can actually be applied to your dress to cover stains!).

Food Brides and grooms sometimes get caught up in the day and forget to eat. Even at the reception, they are busy meeting and greeting and sometimes only pick at their food. So have a stash of snacks available throughout the day and evening. Granola bars, Gatorade, etc. Bring mints and gum, too!

Add these useful products to your emergency kit! Revlon Super Lustrous The Luscious Mattes Leather Edit Lipstick Avène Aqua Fluid SPF 50+ sunscreen (available in May) YSL Lash Clash Mascara Burt's Bees Squeezy Tinted Lip Balm Electric London’s C-7 e.Spray hairspray Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water All In One with Vitamin C

JUST ADD COLOUR

What about trending colours when it comes to destination décor? They are lush and bold, with plenty of textural greens or soft, modern takes on the classic wedding palette of whites and creams.

Hot tip PLANNING YOUR RECEP TION?

Heed these words of wisdom from expert wedding planners. They have seen just about everything and know what they are talking about!

Statement florals Focus on statement décor and florals in the more highly photographed areas of the reception (which is typically the centre of the room). As a planner and a designer, the first thing I will do is opt for an estate head table, where the bridal party and their spouses all sit at a lavishly decorated long rectangle table facing each other. I also like to emphasize larger or extravagant florals for guest tables closest to the head table, and reserve smaller arrangements and candles for the exterior tables as you move further away from the centre of the room. If you love the finer details, I choose to reserve beautiful glassware, charger plates, ornate cutlery, monogrammed napkins and stunning table stationery for the bridal party and family honour tables only. Elise Schmitz Toast Events

Focus on the food! Everyone comes to a wedding ready to eat. And they’re definitely looking for the food to be amazing. If you want your guests to be happy, feed them as soon as the schedule allows. Finger foods after the ceremony is the best place to start. If you’re not having a cocktail hour, start dinner early with appetizers at their seats. But don’t stop there. Giving your guest the opportunity to refuel with a late-night station will be most appreciated by those hitting it hard on the dance floor. Lynkahn Sutton Matrimony Events

CREATE A TRADITION

If you celebrate your wedding at a great resort, you can return there for anniversaries, family trips and other milestones and it becomes “your place.”

Heads up If you are having an outdoor reception, make sure to let your guests know. This allows your guests to plan accordingly in terms of wearing flats over stilettos, knowing to bring a coat if it’s a spring/fall wedding and wearing lighter attire if it’s a summer wedding. Will you have enough coverage from the afternoon sun for your summer wedding? Consider a tent with no side panels to allow for air flow, or paper fans and umbrellas available for guests during the ceremony. The paper fans can be a great little takeaway for your guests as well. October evenings can get chilly. Maybe consider renting heaters to help keep your guests warm. Plan for all kinds of weather. Sarah Teed Events by Sarah Megan

Think holistically Think holistically when it comes to the amount of space the venue offers. Consider not just your guest count, but also what styles of tables you’d like to use, where you want the dance floor to be, and what other large-scale items you may be bringing in (like a photo booth or an espresso cart) to really determine if the space will be large enough and where you may need to compromise if it’s not. If at all possible, try to avoid tearing down any tables to make space for dancing – it can be really awkward for guests to feel like they are losing their home base, even if they plan to be dancing most of the night. Valary Chrisman Vivid & Vogue Weddings and Events

Get musical Plan your music selections ahead of time. You have hired an amazing DJ, but your wedding reception should be a reflection of you and the demographics of your invited guests and family. Do not under-estimate the importance of music selections. Choose your personal dance music to be a true reflection of you and not what is on the Top 20 Billboard chart. The music for your grand entrance, first dance, cake cutting, parent dance, etc. should be thoughtfully selected. Most DJs welcome some information on what kind of music your guests will love to groove to at the reception dace party. Are they into ‘80s, ‘90s, country, rock ‘n roll, hip hop or a blend of more than one genre? Music is the heartbeat of a really good party. Adeola Damie Celebration Events Management

LOCATION IS EVERYTHING

The big reveal

Make it yours

Do a reception reveal. With all the planning you’ve done to-date, you should do a reception reveal to see how all the work was executed and how your wedding vision has come to life. Don’t forget to have your photographer capture the moment you see your event space.

Make the event feel like you, and be intentional with your wedding design. Don't have just another wedding at a venue that will have hosted many before and after you. Make sure it feels like your wedding. It's the nuances and the details in between that make all the difference.

Twice as nice TWO WEDDING RECEPTIONS I S G A I N I N G P O P U L A R I T Y, T H A N K S T O T H E PA N D E M I C .

With COVID wreaking havoc on all things wedding, many couples opted to have smaller ceremonies and receptions over the last two years, in hopes of having a larger event at a later date. Well, cue the celebrations, because things have opened up and it’s time to party. Devon Anzit went through this exact situation. She and her now-husband Robert held a pop-up elopement on their original wedding date of September 5, 2020, with an edited guestlist and minimized fanfare. On July 31, 2021, the couple did it all again, this time with their original list of loved ones.

‘‘The pop-up elopement was tougher because of COVID restrictions ever changing. It was an emotional roller coaster.”

ROMANTIC RENDEVOUS

When travelling with a group, don’t forget to add in some alone time for you two, whether it’s arriving a bit early, staying longer, or booking romantic experiences like our Twilight Photoshoot and Dinner for Two on the beach.

Aside from fewer people, the wedding receptions had their differences. “There was definitely more pressure for the

second reception because we had all of our family and friends there,” says Devon. “We also had speeches for our second, larger reception, so there were a lot of nerves around that, too. It was your whole big shebang wedding with all the bells and whistles! Where our pop-up elopement was so simple – just what we needed, no extra fluff and just our closest family. So planning that smaller reception must have been easier, right? Not according to Devon. “The pop-up elopement was tougher because of COVID restrictions ever changing. It was an emotional roller coaster and I planned three different weddings in different places. So by the time the second, large reception came around we had already done it once! We learned what we liked and didn’t like from the first one and adapted the second event. Who gets a trial run at a wedding? We are so fortunate to have had two beautiful weddings!” And between the two, Devon liked aspects from each. “I liked the ease of the first pop-up elopement. It felt like just attending a family dinner (where we also said ‘I do’). I liked that we got to hang out with our family and spend a lot of time of them – it was really intimate and special and the timeline of the day didn’t matter. Whereas with our big wedding (we actually did the ceremony again and renewed our vows for family and friends to witness), it was a busy day! Being pulled this way and that way for photos and sticking to a tight schedule even to have our hair and make-up done in the morning, the entire day was scheduled."

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

“However, it felt real when we had everyone we loved present. I guess in my mind, when you think ‘wedding,’ you picture the traditional wedding with tons of flowers, speeches and dancing. That’s what the second reception was: living out our traditional wedding dreams. It was so nice to celebrate, cry and dance with everyone who matters to us.”

The Reception Guide

Destination unknown Planning a destination wedding reception can be a whole lot trickier than planning an at-home reception for one reason. Simply put: you aren’t there in person to make all the decisions, on site. So how do you plan the perfect destination reception from hundreds of kilometres away? Here’s some advice to help you through.

LET GO. It might be difficult (especially for all those type-A personalities out there), but put your trust in your wedding planner. Typically, a wedding or romance expert from your resort/ property will be in charge of your event. And guess what? They know what they are doing. They are local and understand the ins and outs of the local wedding industry. So while it may give you heart palpitations to hand the reins to someone else, trust the process. It may actually help you enjoy your wedding day even more.

ESTABLISH AN ITINERARY BEGINNING WITH YOUR ARRIVAL TO THE PROPERTY. Do a site tour and figure out what you’ll do after the reception dinner. Depending on the number of guests you have, you may have an entire event space set aside for you, with music and entertainment. Or, maybe you are heading to the resort disco for some drinks and dancing. Whatever your post-dinner activities will be, set them in stone so everyone knows what to expect. Ask your planner for their suggestions for what best suits your group’s needs.

ARRANGE A TASTING WHEN YOU ARRIVE. Sample menu items, along with wines and signature cocktails, if possible. Be considerate of your entire group when making your selections. And be sure to bring any food allergies to your planner/ chef’s attention.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

BRING SMALL DÉCOR ITEMS WITH YOU, TO PERSONALIZE THINGS A BIT MORE. Place cards, napkin rings or menus, for example, are small, easily-packable items than can really add to your tablescape. Or maybe some old photos of you and your partner. Don’t go overboard by shipping boxes of décor ahead of time (resorts don’t love this as they don’t have much space to store your decorations, plus dealing with customs can be a pain).

GO LOCAL IF YOU DO FAVOURS. Small bottles of rum, locally handcrafted jewelry, coffee beans or glassware. Make the items small enough that they won’t take up your guest’s luggage space. Your guests want to experience the country they are visiting, so there’s no point in bringing favours from home.

ASK ABOUT ENTERTAINMENT AVAILABLE AT THE PROPERTY. Resorts tend to have many talented people on staff – from piano players, to singers, to fire eaters and dancers. There might be a way to have someone do a private show during your cocktail hour or dinner.

GET ALL THE COSTS UPFRONT. These can be considerable. Upgrades to meals, alcohol, entertainment and décor will be extra. You may have to rethink your florals or cake, but whatever you choose will end up being beautiful. Get all costs in writing (preferably before you leave Canada!).

ALLOW GUESTS TO CHANGE FOR THE RECEPTION. Chances are you’re in a tropical location that is still hot, hot, hot in the evenings. If guests want to change from pants to shorts, or heels to flipflops, so be it. Brides and grooms should feel free to do the same!

If you like the idea of a printed menu for your reception, consider printing just one or two per table and displaying them in the centre, propped against your flowers (to save money and the planet!)

Where’s the party? What is a wedding reception if not the best party of your life? And if parties are your thing, think about hitting up these epic cities for your honeymoon or destination wedding. Each one is known for their celebration skills.

Cancun Mexico is the perfect fun-in-the-sun destination wedding location. With the gorgeous beaches, beautiful resorts and delicious food, you’re guaranteed to have a stellar trip. But if you want to level-up the party experience, head to Cancun. The nightlife in Cancun is second-to-none in the Caribbean. With famous bars like Coco Bongo (known for their live entertainment), The City (with a 5,000-person capacity) and Mandala (a more upscale, lounge-type feel), the opportunity to dance and get a little crazy is easily accessible. Lines may be long at the more popular clubs, but there is always the option to go on a bar hopping tour, where you’ll hit tons of hotspots all in the same night. And of course, you can’t miss Señor Frog’s, which is extra touristy, but will definitely kick things into party mode. Foam parties, glow parties and reggae nights are all part of their regular schedule. Even if you stop by midday for lunch, you’ll feel the party vibes.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE

The biggest trend is toward a balance of luxury experiences – amazing spa treatments and quality dining options, for example – with upgraded details like a swim-up pool or included water sports and outdoor activities.

CARIBBEAN NUPTIALS FROM BEACH TO BALLROOM Plan an unforgettable tropical wedding with Grand Palladium Hotels & Resorts and TRS Hotels

The most beautiful beaches in the world await couples planning a Caribbean destination wedding at the all-inclusive Grand Palladium Hotels & Resorts and TRS Hotels in Mexico, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, where renowned New York wedding and event planner Karen Bussen can help plan toes-in-the-sand nuptials, a custom-themed ballroom bash, or any type of celebration couples desire. A wedding coordinator at each resort works with couples to ensure that every element of their destination wedding lives up to their personal vision, from food and music to décor and location, to the wedding day itself. Designed by Bussen, the Weddings by Palladium collection features four distinct wedding packages. The Bliss in Bloom wedding theme uses fragrant roses and flowing curtains to add vintage elegance to the ceremony and reception. Hanging ivy and white or fuchsia dendrobium orchids define a dreamy Evermore wedding, with birdcages filled with flowers serving as centerpieces on every table. The Timeless theme pairs lilies and roses with pearls and crystals to create a wedding day sparkling with love, plus a touch of bling. And for a classic Caribbean beach wedding, the Waves of Love theme combines starfish and seashell décor with sheer curtains unfurling in the ocean breeze, with the path to the altar lined with beach pails filled with baby’s breath.

In addition to the eternal beauty of a sunset ceremony on the beach, “fabulously flexible” Weddings by Palladium venue options include resort wedding chapels, gardens, and seaside terraces. A beach ceremony at the TRS Coral Hotel located in Costa Mujeres, Mexico, for example, can include up to 300 guests, with vows exchanged under a shady pergola with azure Caribbean waves gently lapping behind. For the best of both worlds, the resort’s Poseidon reception room combines the comfort of an indoor event with stunning views of the coast and sea through floor-to-ceiling windows. Couples can also go all-out with a stylish ballroom reception accommodating up to 700 guests. Similarly unique and varied wedding venues are available at TRS Yucatan Hotel located in Riviera Maya and TRS Cap Cana Hotel and TRS Turquesa Hotel located in the Dominican Republic, as well as the Grand Palladium Hotels & Resorts located in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. Ceremonies are easily tailored to the needs of same-sex couples, and Weddings by Palladium also has special South Asian wedding packages that include traditional mehndi and sangeet parties. Every one of the adults-only TRS Hotels is paired with a family friendly Grand Palladium Hotels & Resorts property, so the couple can

relax in romantic serenity while still offering guests the option of bringing children to celebrate their lifetime of love. Destination weddings at Grand Palladium Hotels & Resorts and TRS Hotels don’t begin and end on the wedding day. With the Weddings by Palladium collection, your entire resort stay becomes part of the celebration, starting with special room rates and upgrades for the couple continuing with private check-in, group dinner reservations at each resort’s multiple restaurants, nightly turn-down service, and access to the hydrotherapy area at the Zentropia Palladium Spa & Wellness center. Breakfast in bed, a sparkling toast after the ceremony, and a unique wedding gift courtesy of your hosts help make a Grand Palladium Hotels & Resorts and TRS Hotels wedding indelible from beginning to end. For more lasting memories, couples can schedule a twilight photo shoot, an afternoon escape for a catered picnic, or a moonlight dinner for two during their stay. Wedding guests, meanwhile, can enjoy the world-class hospitality of a Grand Palladium Hotels & Resorts and TRS Hotels stay, which includes multiple all-inclusive dining options, endless activities and entertainment, and immersive relaxation at the spa, in the pool, or on the beach.

Las Vegas New York has been dubbed the “City the never sleeps”, but really that title should go to Las Vegas. Sure, it’s the perfect bachelor/ bachelorette party destination, but it’s also a great city to be married in. If your guest list is all about nightlife, then Vegas might be the place for you. Forget what you know about Vegas weddings. No one is saying you have to be married by Elvis (although, you can, if you want to. No judgement). The hotels and chapels in Vegas are truly beautiful and unique. Get married in front of the fountains at the Bellagio, or in a mini tropical oasis at the Flamingo, or even at the top of the Eiffel Tower at Paris. And after the I dos are said, you can hit the town. Your evening excursions all come down to your personality. Foodies are in heaven in Vegas, with celebrity-chef-owned restaurants at every turn. Those who love to get sweaty on a dancefloor will be overwhelmed by the choices, surrounded by clubs with the best-ofthe-best DJs, and, of course, you can take in any number of shows and concerts. The opportunities are endless, the drinks are bottomless and the fun is non-stop.

New Orleans It doesn’t have to be Mardi Gras to party in this city – with the music, the culture and the food, there is always somewhere to have a good time. Kelly Sherlock, a wedding and events planner in The Big Easy says, “Our receptions are typically shorter than what you might see up North because our formula is based around having great food, a packed dance floor and consistently keeping your glass full. Everyone knows that the best part of a wedding is the cocktail hour and the dance party, so we combine the two and top it off with various options of delicious New Orleans cuisine. But when the ‘night has ended’ and it’s time for last call, guests are always ready to hit the town and see what else the city has to offer.” And the city has plenty to give. “While Bourbon Street is certainly a fan favourite, with hot spots like Pat O’Briens and the Cat’s Meow, not everyone comes to New Orleans to experience Bourbon Street,” says Kelly. “And that’s why we love the central business district and the warehouse district – close enough for those who want to branch out, but enjoyable enough that you do not need to look very far for an amazing restaurant or a happy hour, pre-wedding cocktail! You can spend a full day hotel-hopping, art shopping and pub crawling, never seeing Bourbon Street, and you will still have the time of your life.” As a local, Kelly has the inside track when it comes to the less touristy spots. “You’re hard pressed to find locals hanging out on Bourbon Street, so if you are looking for some local hot spots, here’s where we go for the after party: Gold Mine Saloon (on Dauphine), Red Eye Grill (in the warehouse district), Lucy’s retired Surfers Bar and Restaurant (in the warehouse district), the columns hotel (on St Charles Avenue – Uptown) and Hot Tin (the rooftop of the Pontchartrain Hotel uptown).”

Remember to put the guidebook down for a moment and explore the local favourites.

Negril Jamaica is a popular destination wedding location, and for good reason. The people, the properties, the sunshine and laid-back vibes all contribute to the romance of the island. The resorts in Jamaica, whether in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios or Negril, provide stunning venue options for any type of wedding, but Negril is where the partying happens. Anywhere you go in Jamaica, a Red Stripe (and more herbal options) are close at hand, but Negril is where you can truly let loose. Yes, it is a little touristy, but who cares? In fact, if you want, you can get all your partying out in one easy day, by hitting two major attractions: Margaritaville and Rick’s Café. Located on the white sands of the picturesque 7-Mile Beach, Margaritaville is the ideal place to indulge in, well, a margarita (or two or three). Relax under the sun, dip your toes in the bath-warm water and sip on frozen cocktails to the sounds of Jimmy Buffet (you’ll only hear “that song” once or twice). From there, head to Rick’s Café, a cliff-side bar/restaurant famous for its gorgeous sunsets and cliff diving. Private cabanas and bottle service are available for groups; you also get front-row seats to all the sunset goodness. If you’re staying for dinner, order the rasta pasta – you won’t regret it!

Ibiza The ultimate party destination (and ultra-gorgeous setting for nuptials) is Ibiza. The island, located off mainland Spain, is known for its over-the-top party scene, music, festivals and all-around boozy debauchery. The beach clubs in Ibiza are world-renowned, and depending on the time of day you visit, you could be in for a relaxing meal accompanied by acoustic music, or a crammed dance floor with bass thumping in your chest from one of many world-class DJs. Ushuaiai Ibiza Beach Club, Experimental Beach and

O Beach Ibiza are just a few gems you shouldn’t miss. Ibiza, however, isn’t just drunken antics. Scuba diving, horseback riding, kayaking, and go-karting are just a few adventurous experiences you can enjoy. Feeling extra brave? Take a hot air balloon trip for the ultimate view of the island. The unique, luxury hotels and villas in Ibiza are ideal for destination weddings. The one-of-a-kind views are the perfect backdrop for exchanging vows.

Consider making an itinerary for guests and either putting that on your wedding website or printing it and including it in a welcome bag.
