The good old days “I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.” Fans of The Office should recognize that Andy Bernard quote. I have thought about this quote often over the last two years, as I think back to weddings of 2019 – bigger events, less stress, more freedom to travel for destination events and honeymoons. It all seemed so easy back then. But I have also stopped to consider the amazing ways weddings have changed, too. It became clear over the last two years that the most important thing about a wedding is being able to commit to the person you love. That may have been getting lost before, in the hustle and bustle of trying to create the perfect, Instagram-worthy celebration. And as months went on, that understanding grew stronger: a wedding is about being with those who mean the most to you as you say “I do” to your partner. We learned to appreciate the beauty and charm of intimate weddings. We got back to nature, with more outdoor events than ever. We discovered a newfound respect for wedding vendors and planners, as they worked tirelessly to make dreams come true. We found ultimate joy in smaller, sweeter moments, cherishing the ability to have any kind of ceremony at all. Everything means more now. And I hope that is one trend that sticks around. Welcome back to weddings – in whatever form they happen to be in the moment you are reading this. Weddings are constantly evolving, and so are we. We will adapt and carry on with the mantra of the last two years: love is not cancelled.

avoid
We get it: there’s a lot of pressure to look good on your wedding day. If you’re like most people, your wedding day will go down as one of the most important days of your life. So naturally, you’ll want to look and feel your best. Not to mention – wedding photos are forever. All that pressure can conjure up insecurities you never even knew you had. And with social media trends popping up daily, it’s easy to fall for the latest beauty trends making their rounds. And while some beauty hacks that go viral are helpful, others can be straight-up dangerous. Don’t worry: we’ve got you. We’ve rounded up the worst beauty hacks trending on TikTok so you can be sure to avoid them before the big day.
TODAYS B R I D E .C A • 1 6
Sunscreen Contour This trend encourages you to apply sunscreen on the parts of your face you would normally apply highlighter to, leave the rest of your skin bare, and go out into the sun to tan. The hopeful result? A perfectly snatched face, tanned and highlighted in all the right places. Yikes doesn’t quite cover it. This is a huge skincare no-no. It’s a bad idea to expose your face to the sun unprotected in the first place – think sunburn, premature aging, and sun spots – plus, there is no way this is as easy as it seems. At best, you’ll likely look splotchy and uneven on your big day. Instead, get your makeup artist to contour your face professionally, if that’s the look you’re going for.

Needleless Lip Filler One of the most dangerous trends that circled TikTok this year involved people injecting their lips at home with a Hyaluron pen for a puffier, fuller pout. The pen uses pressurized air instead of a needle to plump up the lips usually with hyaluronic acid. This is one of the most unsafe trends appearing on the popular social media app, with many doctors and dermatologists posting on TikTok themselves telling the public not to attempt this at home. If you want fuller lips on your wedding day – try fillers done by a professional or, for a more temporary solution, plumping gloss usually does the trick in a pinch.

At-Home Teeth Filing This trend involves using a nail file on your teeth – yes, you unfortunately read that right – to get rid of unwanted grooves and straighten your smile. But beware: Dentists say this is a scary trend because unlike most “hacks”, its impact will last forever. Unlike your fingernails, which after you file them will grow back, your teeth will stay the way they are filed forever. Plus, by filing your teeth, you’re removing the protective layer – called the enamel – which could cause some major sensitivity. Don’t like your smile? Check in with your dentist on what can be done. Or, embrace it. Chances are your fiancé loves your smile just the way it is!

DIY Dermaplaning A face as smooth as a baby’s bottom is the skincare goal for almost every bride. And it can be achieved by a professional dermaplaning treatment – wherein peach fuzz and dead skin are shaved off carefully using a surgical scalpel – which results in a brighter, clearer complexion and skin that is buttery soft. Of course, these treatments aren’t cheap, so leave it to TikTok users to rise to the occasion and present a more affordable solution. This “hack” encourages you to use an eyebrow razor to shave the peach fuzz off your face, much like you would get in a dermaplaning treatment. But watch out – inexpensive razors won’t be as sharp or effective as the medical-grade ones used during professional treatments. So, you won’t get the same effect at home, and you could cut yourself and cause scarring. Ouch!
Face taping Perhaps the most recent of the beauty trends is face taping – a “hack” that involves using tape and sticky adhesive on certain parts of the face overnight to restrict movement and frowning and thus minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Some are calling it a work-around to preventative Botox. But dermatologists warn against it citing most tapes people are using are not meant to be used on the skin, and can cause irritation and even breakouts. There’s also a risk that you could pull off a layer of skin when you remove the tape in the morning. Hard pass. If wrinkles and fine lines are bothering you as your big day approaches, consider a consultation with your dermatologist on safe measures you can take, like a relaxing, hydrating facial or starting a retinol regimen.

First time: “Most of our guests had not been to an LGBTQ+ wedding, let alone a transgender wedding. I think guests will remember being surrounded by love,” says Jamie.
A love story: “I am a South Asian woman of transgender experience and had just moved to downtown Toronto, and Phil was a restaurant owner living in the suburbs,” says Jamie. “At the time, I had not come out publicly. We met by chance – an accidental swipe on a dating site that started our love story. After a few dates, we knew there was something magical between us. However, Phil didn’t know that I was transgender. I was falling in love with him and after a few weeks, I mustered up the courage to share my story. To my surprise, Phil was understanding and compassionate towards my experience as he was falling in love with the the person I am.”

It’s happening: Jamie says, “As a trans woman, I never imagined I would
find love, let alone be engaged to get married. I wanted the life that everyone deserves, no matter how they identify. My favourite moment of my wedding day was standing on top of the stairs in my beautiful wedding gown and looking at my handsome groom. It’s as if time had stood still for a moment. My dream as a child – a fairy tale – was about to be my reality.” Other favourite aspects included the transgender flag in the bouquet, the lush greenery in the reception space and the table dedicated to donations to The 519, a community centre in Toronto.

Great timing: “We’ve always wanted a small wedding so it was the perfect time to get married and we invited just our core group of friends and family,” says the bride. Picture perfect: During a chance encounter at a surprise party, this couple had their photo taken together, but didn’t actually know each other. Rachel always wondered who that handsome guy was, and reconnected with him three years later. “The rest is history,” she says. “We’ve been together for 12 years now. We are both very passionate about the same things: nature, architecture and exploring.” Favourite moments: Rachel says that having her good friend step in as officient was a stand-out moment. “He did such an amazing job and made it so personal for us.” But what will the guests remember most of all? Most likely the alpacas and mixologists behind the bar. A piece of advice: If you have your heart set
on including animals at your wedding or reception, the bride advises this: “Make sure the animals are comfortable around crowds.” (Also, before you make any of your wedding party walk a dog down the aisle or ride into the ceremony on a horse, be sure they are comfortable with animals, too!)

Finally: “It had been so long since we had a reason to gather and celebrate. There was a buzz of excitement, and you could feel the love and happiness,” says Daisy. Traditions: To honour their Sri Lankan and Hong Kong Chinese heritages, the couple included several cultural ceremonies such as the placing of the Thali, a Chinese tea ceremony, the Sri Lankan wedding lamp lighting ceremony, exchanging of flower garlands and wearing a bridal Lengha. Theme: Daisy explains that the colours for
the wedding were inspired by their wedding hashtag #OnCloudLai. Greys, black, dusty blues and white represented the colours of the clouds and sky, with gold accents to add that luxe component to the colour palette.
Go with it: A lot didn’t go according to plan, but Daisy had a positive attitude. “The way I fixed things was to have an open mindset, continuously re-evaluate what was important and accept that there were many factors that were out of my control. You really need to remain optimistic, but also flexible, while wedding planning – the pandemic just emphasized the importance of this. However, it helped that we had an amazing team of local vendors.”

Waiting: “For 10 years we had the same friends, best friends dating each other, and we didn’t get together. It was never the time for us. The universe had its plan and everything fell perfectly into place,” says Julia. Pandemic problems: As guidelines changed,
so did the wedding plans. The original date was dropped and a back-up date turned out to be perfect. “Most of the restrictions were lifted at that point, which allowed us to have a wedding most similar to what we had planned,” says Julia. “We had a personalized outdoor ceremony on the lawn, a beautiful cocktail reception on the terrace and in the carriage house with the VW bus photo booth, beer truck and music by a string quartet, followed by an amazing reception in the barn with a three-course meal, espresso and dancing.”
Memorable moments: While the bride and
groom’s favourite part of the day was the very personalized ceremony, guests will remember the food. Julia says, “People are still raving about how amazing the food was! We’re Italian – it’s always about the food! People keep telling me the venue was so beautiful and unique – and also the tablecloths! Everyone loved the velvet tablecloths!”
The details: The bride’s vision was brought to life perfectily, but she loved the florals most. “Did you see the flower arch? The bouquets? I am so in love with it all!”

Perfection: Even though plans changed here and there, the bride says, “Once we set foot into our venue, and every second after, everything magically came together (and if it didn’t, no one told us!).”
Preparing for anything: As we have learned over the last two years, be ready for anything! Sara says, “We had four different versions of guest lists (at the same time), all dependent on what the government decided with capacity restrictions. While we thankfully never changed the date, we increased our wedding from 40 to 75 guests in less than a month due to an increase in numbers we were hoping for.” An emotional roller coaster: “Before and
during, the planning process was very emotional,” says Sara. “All of what I thought our wedding would be was challenged from all angles. Most difficult of all, my maid of honour, who lives in the USA, and I had to face the reality only months before that she would not be able to attend our wedding and be by my side. It was upsetting and completely out of our control.”
Getting personal: The bride and groom wanted to express their gratitude to guests in a personal way, and did that with custom placecards for each guest, with a unique note for every person. Sara says, “Weddings can be overwhelming and it’s hard to ensure you get a chance to connect with everyone. Although a lot of work, this was an immediate way to have a personal touch with impact.”

Advertorial
AFTER TWO YEARS OF UNCHARTED WEDDING TERRITORY, PLANNERS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER! Danielle Andrews and Tracey Manailescu are the co-founders of THE WEDDING PLANNERS INSTITUTE OF CANADA (WPIC) and they have some helpful advice for the new way of planning. What has COVID taught us about wedding planning?
Photography: Motion D Photography
Tracey: Hiring professionals for your wedding are an absolute must. We have worked with our couples to plan, downsize, reschedule, make contingency plans, create and implement safety plans, and then replan again. Couples, we are here to listen, stand up for you, help navigate, and communicate on your behalf, all while working as a team. We are an invaluable investment. Can a planner help with changing wedding dates?
Tracey: I feel that this was the most difficult part for our wedding couples to deal with, as they had their hearts set on a specific day, certain numbers for the guest list, and a look and feel that they wanted for their wedding. We needed to offer new and fresh ideas to make their wedding extra special. Micro Weddings filled that role and will definitely continue into 2022 and beyond. We are ready! When it comes to planning stress, what is your advice?
Tracey: Whether you are engaged, just married, or work in the wedding industry, you know how stressful planning a wedding can be. Add a pandemic into the mix and it can be completely overwhelming. My advice to all is to
Should couples be worried about planning in 2022?
Danielle: I think that couples can cautiously be optimistic. Most jurisdictions have announced that there will be fewer restrictions in 2022, so while weddings will not be exactly as they were in 2019, they will be more of what we are used to. Every plan should be made with a contingency, and contracts are an absolute must with every single vendor and service, with clear cancellation procedures. TODAYS B R I DE .C A • 50
keep the communication open, be empathetic, be respectful and be reasonable. We have all been affected by COVID in one way or another whether it’s emotionally, financially or physically in the past two years. Please be fair, be kind and have patience. What three things should a couple book first?
Danielle: If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s the value of a wedding planner. A wedding planner is definitely a couple’s first call; their insight, experience and expertise will be invaluable when helping you plan this event. The next thing that a couple should book is
their ceremony venue. Weddings are going to be in very high demand in 2022, the most happening since 1984, so it will be extremely important to secure your place of worship or dream ceremony venue early. If you are not having the reception at the same place as your ceremony, that is the next item to book, as again, reception spaces will be in very high demand. After that, secure any specialty wedding professionals that you want for your wedding, like a wedding band or performer you have had your heart set on, or a dream photographer, because there is only one of them, so you need to secure them as early as possible.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS
These two grooms decided on a shared bachelor party experience and it was, in a word, awesome. Gregory and Sean knew that when it came to the big bachelor party celebration, they wanted to do it together. Gregory says, “We loved the idea of a shared party for a number of reasons; the first reason is that we have already made the commitment of being together – so why should we have a ‘last bash’ with separate events and the silliness that comes with a big night out? The days of leaving your partner at home while you go party with the crew are over. There is a new dawn of bachelor and bachelorette parties and it’s all about the love. The second reason is that it is important to recognize all those loved ones who got you and your partner to the next life chapter and lead up to the wedding. Think of it as an appreciation event – time to celebrate the support you have received and recognize those who made it all possible.”
{
SO WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO CREATE THE PERFECT BACHELOR PARTY? HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FROM GREGORY:
{
1. On arrival, welcome guests with a great cocktail to set the tone of the evening.
2. Have surprise experiences not only for the guests of honour, but for all the attendees – these are shared moments and should be exciting for everyone! This could be live entertainment, décor reveals or unique food stations. 3. Give thanks. Whether someone is hosting for you, or you are planning your bachelor party yourself, make sure the group knows how much they mean to you and your partner. This could be a small gift, a handwritten note or a speech to the group – recommended earlier in the evening!

7 awesome reasons why
winter weddings are
HAVING YOUR WEDDING MID-WINTER CAN BE REALLY AMAZING. HERE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS WINTER WEDDINGS HAVE THAT SUMMER WEDDINGS CAN’T COMPETE WITH.
› Snow Ok. This seems pretty obvious, but think about it: what a gorgeous backdrop for photos. Or have your ceremony against a wall of windows in the evening, allowing the snow to set a romantic mood. Take that, green leaves and flowers.
› Warm drinks Hot chocolate and apple cider are ideal for cold-weather gatherings. Also, adding a dash of alcohol and turning them into warm winter cocktails isn’t the worst idea. › Off-season pricing and availability
› Style options
Many venues will have a lower rate for the winter months. You may even find deals with other vendors, as well. The one you won’t have much luck with is florals; depending on which flowers you had your heart set on, they may be out of season.
Cold-weather accessories for you and your bridesmaids can be beautiful and adorable. Matching faux fur stoles or muffs give an elegant look, whereas earmuffs or toques can be super cute. And how about winter boots under your dress ? Oh so sweet! And don’t forget to wrap yourselves up in a plaid blanket for extra-cozy pics. › Long sleeves If you had your heart on a long-sleeved dress, winter is the time for it. You don’t have to worry about all that crazy heat and humidity. › Winter décor

SUNNY GETAWAYS
There’s nothing like leaving the Canadian cold behind and escaping to a tropical climate. With a summer wedding, jetting off to a honeymoon hot spot is not as appreciated as when you ditch the icy temperatures. TODAYS B R I D E .C A • 6 4

Evergreen and pinecone accents are perfect for the winter season. And no, they don’t have to look Christmasy – just outdoorsy. Also, think sparkling, ice-like décor or snowflakes.

PRESSURE
HAPPIEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE? OR MOST STRESSFUL?
The average wedding can create a substantial amount of stress, but then you add in a pandemic, and things escalate. Try not to let the stress get the better of you. When you feel those anxious thoughts begin to creep in, take action. Here’s how to make things less stressful.
› TALK ABOUT OTHER
› STAY ORGANIZED
THINGS
Create lists. And then more lists. Having a to-do list can help you stay on track, but also give a sense of accomplishment as you check off boxes. If organization isn’t your strong suit, this is what a wedding planner is for. Rely on a trusted professional for their words of wisdom and organization skills.
Don’t let wedding discussions consume every minute of your life. Plan a date night with your significant other and abide by one rule: no wedding talk! Forget about spreadsheets and guestlists and registries, and put some romance back into your relationship. Or, get together with your wedding party for a crazy night out (again, no mention of wedding planning). Go dancing, see a hockey game or get active. Blowing off some steam can leave you feeling refreshed and ready to tackle tedious planning.
› DELEGATE You don’t have to do it all! Sure, you might have an idea in your mind that you feel only you can bring to life, but you have capable people around you. Look to your vendors for their expertise. If you feel overwhelmed, that’s what your wedding party is for. Don’t be afraid to put them to work – they know what they signed up for.
› CUT THE TOXICITY
› PRIORITIZE Get your most important tasks done first. This way if the small things don’t get done, it isn’t a big deal. And while those little details might be important to you, consider this: who, aside from yourself, will notice? Guests will remember the experience most of all.
› HAVE A PLAN B If COVID has taught us anything, it’s that plans change unexpectedly. This is something you should mentally prepare for by having back-up plans — venue, guestlist, etc. Having contingencies will help eliminate disappointment.
{
PREPARE FOR POST-WEDDING BLUES
After the wedding, couples can often experience sadness, knowing that the big day is over. (Remember Monica on Friends after she was married? “I will never be a bride again. Now I’m just someone’s wife.”) Know that you have lots to look forward to: the honeymoon, photos, presents. And if you can’t shake the feeling, create a new goal. Maybe take up a new hobby, renovate a room in your home or plan a trip. If these feelings persist after a few months and affect your day-to-day mental or physical health, seek professional help.
TODAYS B R I D E .C A • 76
This is your wedding, and you should be focussed on your own happiness, not pleasing others. Have a bridesmaid causing issues? Talk it out; don’t let it fester. If problems continue, removing that person from the wedding party could be an option. Parents giving you a hard time? Again, have a frank discussion about your feelings. These can be awkward conversations, but you don’t want a couple bad apples to ruin your wedding experience. You’ll feel so much relief after getting things out in the open. Try to stay calm and level-headed, while making your points clear. Getting things off your chest can alleviate tension and help you sleep better at night.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THESE TRENDS IN 2022
GREEN MACHINE: Looks like shades of green will be popular next year, in invitations, décor, bridesmaid dresses and more. The Pantone colour of the year is Very Peri (basically, periwinkle), but we aren’t sure if that will take off when it comes to bridal.
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: Weddings will continue to include a smaller guest list, but this won’t affect the luxury of weddings. In fact, smaller guest lists sometimes leave budget space for more extravagant reception details.
WEEKDAY WEDDINGS: We will likely see more weddings happening during the week to compensate for all the postponements during lockdowns. This may also include events like mid-week, evening wedding showers and engagement parties.
OPEN AIR TENTS: Outdoor weddings are less of a risk when it comes to potential wedding restrictions, so open-air tents (tents without any walls) will see a gain in popularity (providing the safety of being outdoors, without being rained on).
PERSONAL-SIZED SERVINGS: With health and safety at top of mind, individual servings will stick around when it comes to food. Think mini charcuterie boards, boxed meals and flights of appetizers versus passed appetizers.
KEEPING THINGS LOCAL: Couples are aware of struggling businesses in their cities, so they may look to “mom and pop shops” for food, drink, favours, etc. Supporting businesses you know and love has become more important than ever.

THE NEW WEDDING SHOWER
SHAKE THINGS UP Toss the finger sandwiches and pop the bubbly.
Maybe there is something to be said about eating tiny cucumber sandwiches in your grandmother’s living room while related onlookers "ooh" and "ahh" as you open gifts covered in colourful ribbons and bows (that will be turned into a bow bouquet or possibly a bow bra at your more risqué showers). That’s a classic wedding shower and there’s nothing wrong with it – except it may not be for you.
If tradition isn’t your thing, or maybe you’re just interested in stepping outside the box, there are new ways to celebrate. Have a discussion with your wedding party (who probably know you well enough to plan something appropriate, anyway) and express how you’re feeling about these celebrations. Remember that showers are thrown in honour of the soon-to-bewed, so being gracious should be top of mind — but it doesn’t hurt to express your wants and needs. Some people, for example, don’t enjoy being the centre of attention. Have you ever opened gifts for an hour straight with the eyes of 40 people upon you? It can be nerve-wracking. Many people are opening gifts post-event. This gives you more time to socialize and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Plus, it allows you to appreciate the actual experience.
TODAYS B R I D E .C A • 78
GO DRESSY: We haven’t had much opportunity to wear formalwear in the last two years, so break out your sparkly dress and jewels, and go glam. Level up the party with champagne, hors d’oeuvres and pretty décor. You don’t have to attend a fancy venue — go upscale in your own living room. GO HIGHER: Think rooftop celebration at a restaurant or hotel. A great view of your city surrounded by friends is pretty memorable. GO CO-ED: Guess what? Wedding showers aren’t just for the ladies. Guys enjoy a good party, too, and want to celebrate just as much as anyone else. Don’t leave anyone off the list who would like to come revel in all your pre-wedding glory.
GO FOR A THEME:
Disco, old Hollywood or maybe brunch in Paris. Suggest that party-goers dress accordingly.
GO EARLY OR LATE: Wedding showers don’t have to take place at midafternoon on a Sunday. Have a breakfast or brunch celebration, or maybe an evening sit-down dinner. GO COZY: Thinking of just having a few close friends, maybe as a shower/ bachelorette combo? Adult slumber parties are actually fun and hilarious, especially in matching PJs. Get comfy and settle in for some bonding. DON’T FORGET TO THANK YOUR HOSTS! A gift and personalized note to express your gratitude is a must! Consider hosting your own event to celebrate your wedding party.

GOING TO THE CHAPEL
WANT TO GET MARRIED IN A CHURCH, BUT DON'T ACTUALLY GO TO CHURCH? HERE IS THE INSIDE TRACK FROM A PASTOR WHO HAS SEEN IT ALL.
So, you haven’t darkened the door of a church for years, but your grandma’s heart is set on a church wedding. All you have to do is go on Facebook and find the nearest minister, right? Sorry, it’s not that easy. I can’t tell you how many times I have received calls from strangers at the last minute looking for someone to marry them. Clergy are busy people who don’t just work on Sunday mornings. Start early in the wedding planning process to find your church and officiant.
Heed the following tips and it will save you a lot of trouble:
This can range from $100 up to $700 or more! Don’t low-ball the minister! After all, it’s their signature that will make you a married couple. Expect to pay for the church caretaker’s time as well. Usually, a clergy person will ask you for an honorarium for the janitor to clean up the church after the wedding. This is reasonable. An honorarium for the use of the church building will also usually be expected.
TODAYS B R I DE .C A • 84
istockphoto.com
MOST CHURCHES WILL HAVE A WEDDING POLICY AND A SET FEE FOR THE SERVICE.
PROGRESSIVE, LIBERAL OR CONSERVATIVE? I’m not talking about a political party. Churches fall under those headings as well. If there is something non-traditional you want to do with your wedding, approach a minister who isn’t overly-conservative and might balk at the idea. Some churches are well-known to be pretty straight-laced, while others have a reputation of “anything goes.” Just some simple asking around should provide you with the denomination that will meet your expectations.
TELL US YOUR VISION FOR THE CEREMONY. We need that two-way communication in order to make it special for you. And if you aren’t comfortable with the way things are going, it’s okay to move on and continue looking for the right place and the right person.
faith love hope
Do you have a relationship with any clergy person at all? Who officiated at your grandparent’s funeral? Who performed your cousin’s ceremony? Any affiliation such as this will help you get your foot in the door. Ask your family for references to a church or a clergy person they actually enjoy and like.
PLAN YOUR WORDS BEFORE YOU GO.
Remember that ministers and priests are people with feelings, too! Try not to approach them with an attitude that says they are an afterthought. Their sanctuary is more than just some kind of pretty hall to rent. They are performing the Sacrament of Marriage. It is as important to them as it is to you – but maybe in a more spiritual way.
Clergy are desperate for some kind of sign that you understand the spiritual meaning of the holy partnership you are about to enter into. Even saying that you’re trying to make Grandma happy proves you are thoughtful.
PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE BIG QUESTIONS.
{
Don’t be afraid to ask. If you aren’t a church-goer and don’t have a clue about any of these things, don’t be afraid to ask for suggestions from the clergy person. They have had lots of experience with this and can come up with some ideas.
{
All clergy will ask you why you want to get married in the first place, and then why you want to get married in a church. They will hope that the answer goes beyond something like: “My grandmother wants us to,” or
“It’s better for the income tax return.”
And please don’t tell us it’s because our church has a centre aisle! So does the local hockey rink if you try hard enough!
FORM A RELATIONSHIP WITH A CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE. One hour a week on a Sunday morning for a few weeks is a good way to have that relationship. If you feel comfortable with the Sunday service and the person leading it, chances are, you have found the right person to work with you to come up with a meaningful wedding service.

ways to keep your bridal party
happy
YOUR WEDDING ATTENDANTS ARE GIVING UP THEIR TIME AND MONEY TO BE A PART OF YOUR WEDDING. THE LEAST YOU CAN DO IS PROVIDE A HAPPY WEDDING-PLANNING ENVIRONMENT.
› Introduce them to each other Bridesmaids and groomsmen being forced to walk down aisles, share dances, etc. can get awkward. As soon as you decide on your bridal party, host an informal gettogether to get everyone acquainted. If distance is an issue, FaceTime and Zoom are options. › Don’t overschedule them Being in a wedding party is a bit of a time suck. Engagement parties, showers, bachelor parties, plus all the DIY projects you force upon your people. Remember that they have lives, too. Try to give them a list of important dates well in advance. › Go easy on their wallets Before you choose bridesmaid dresses or plan expensive bachelor party trips, consider your friends’ bank accounts. While you might be willing to spare no expense on your big day, don’t lump your wedding party in when it comes to that theory. Have open and honest discussions with them about expenses, giving them a rough estimate of costs upfront. › Don’t get mad Not everyone will be able to make it to every wedding event. If they have a legitimate excuse, don’t be offended or get upset. › Let them help Even if you like things “your way” or seem to have a handle on planning, take the offers of assistance. Bridesmaids and groomsmen like to feel as though they are doing their part and helping as much as possible. › Show thanks

PLAN NON-WEDDING EVENTS
These people are still your friends, not just wedding servants. Plan outings that don’t involve cake tastings or fittings. Instead, go out for drinks, go to a ball game or maybe try a bonding activity like axe throwing. Keep things light and fun – no wedding business. TODAYS B R I D E .C A • 86

Tahitian Treat WHETHER YOU WANT HIGH LUXURY OR MORE BUDGET-FRIENDLY, TAHITI IS THE PERFECT DESTINATION FOR ROMANTIC ADVENTURERS.
Photography: Jim Byers Photo
There are many remarkable destinations in the world you can talk about at a party and get a reaction of wistfulness or jealousy. But there’s probably no six-letter word that causes people to go weak in the knees quite so quickly as the word “Tahiti.” These South Pacific islands are perhaps the most beautiful in the world. They also have a reputation of being too expensive for the average traveller. You can go the luxury route, but there are a wide array of affordable options.
TODAYS B R I DE .C A • 92
Here’s a way to enjoy Tahiti both ways Budget to Moderate On the southern section of the island of Tahiti proper, a 90-minute drive from the airport, Vanira Lodge features private buildings scattered on a grassy hill high above the ocean. Our unit, called Fare Iti, had a nice bedroom and a lovely patio with a hot tub and outdoor shower. The lodge has two small swimming pools and a yoga pavilion. Full breakfast about $25. They also serve lunch and dinner, with entrees from about $20 to $40. Rooms in April listed from around $250. A few minutes south (it’s beyond the end of the road so they’ll have to pick you up in a boat) is Bonjouir Teahupoo Lodge Paradise. You’ll find a lovely lagoon in front, a garden filled with riotous tropical flowers and beautiful mountains in the near distance. Rooms are modest but nice, and several are listed at less than $200 a night. Half board (breakfast and dinner) is about $65 per person. On the low-key island of Raiatea, Fare Vai Nui features five beautiful bungalows a few steps from the ocean. There’s plenty of privacy, and the units are lovely. One of the chefs trained in Paris, so you can expect very good food. Rooms run from around $275. Dinner entrées around $25
to $35. They can set up a local woman to give you a wonderful massage that’s just $75 for 50 minutes. Also on Raiatea, Villa Ixora has hotel rooms and an excellent restaurant. Rooms from around $180. Dinner entrées from about $29. ACTIVITIES AND TOURS: On the main island of Tahiti, Tahiti Iti Tour and Surf can take you on half-day water tours out of the village of Vaira’o for about $85 per person (minimum four people). You’ll see stunning lagoons with clear, icy-blue water and magical, green mountains, and they’ll take you to a remarkable surfing spot. They also do full-day tours. Iaorana tours does amazing cultural tours, led by an enthusiastic guide who’s prone to throw his jeep into park and dash over to grab a local plant so he can explain its uses to native people. You’ll get a great tour of the lush, rugged Papenoo Valley, which is filled with dozens of sparkling waterfalls. You can do four-hour tours for about $65 and a full-day tour for about $92, which usually includes a drive over a steep, winding road to the other side of the island. They presented my wife and I with flower leis to wear, and she also got a flower wreath for her hair.

HOTELS AND MEALS:
Moderate to Luxury HOTELS AND MEALS: On Tahiti Island proper, just a few minutes from the airport in Papeete, the Manava Suite Resort attracts both families and young people. There’s a swim-up bar and a large pool overlooking the lagoon. Rooms in April from around $325. At dinner, try local fish or the pasta Bolognese at their Vaitohi restaurant. The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora might be the most sensuous resort you’ll ever see. They have a series of thatched-roof bungalows perched over what might be the world’s most photographed lagoon. There’s also a stunning swimming pool and a private island in the lagoon for intimate weddings. The couples Polynesian massage is a wonderful treatment that’s followed by a soak in a private tub overlooking a quiet lagoon ($785). There’s a lovely breakfast spot and an outdoor lunch place called Fare Hoa Beach Bar, where the Buddha Bowl with grilled red tuna goes for $70. At dinner, try the spiny lobster and champagne risotto ($102). Rooms from around $2,200 a night. They sometimes have a fourth night free if you book three nights. ACTIVITIES: Dressed in a traditional pareo (a traditional Polynesian skirt for men), with a bare chest and a hat of woven green leaves, the wonderful Nariihau Taruoura at Bora Bora Cultural Lagoon Tours can take you and your honey on a six-hour tour of the lagoon, where you’ll swim in warm, beautiful water with both sting rays and harmless black-tip sharks, make bracelets, help pilot a Tahitian canoe and enjoy a fine outdoor lunch prepared by his wife, Teura Guillotin. It’s about $2,200 for a full-day tour but that can be split by six people. Their half-day lagoon trips are only about $155 per person. A truly spectacular experience. FOOD AND DRINK: On Bora Bora, Bloody Mary’s is a great seafood and steak spot that has been attracting celebrities for years; everyone from Jimmy Buffett (naturally) to Jared Leto. Prices vary by day, depending on the catch. Fish & Blue on Raiatea has excellent seafood, and the décor is like a dreamy, upscale beach house, with plenty of soft blues and whites and even a table nestled under a palm tree on the edge of the lagoon, so you can dip your toes in the water while you eat. I had a wonderful tuna sashimi (about $32). Steaks up to $60. Tropical drinks around $16.
GETTING THERE Air Tahiti Nui offers flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Their Boeing Dreamliner is a great plane, with extra humidity to keep you from drying out and special lighting that helps you sleep. You also can fly from California on United, Air France or French Bee, a discount French airline. Round-trip flights from California can often be found for less than $1,300.

Love Nest Butler Suites® SANCTUARIES THAT REDEFINE LUXURY AND ROMANCE
Sandals® Resorts raises the bar on accommodations with the most luxurious and romantic suites in the Caribbean. As the resorts made for celebrating love, Sandals is renowned for pampering couples with signature all-inclusive luxury. Nowhere is that more apparent than in their unique accommodations. Sandals created the most innovative suites in the Caribbean, appropriately named Love Nest Butler Suites®, and here’s a sampling of some of the top-tier sanctuaries.
Over-the-Water Butler Villas and Bungalows
You don’t have to travel all the way to the South Pacific to bask in the exotic experience of staying in an over-the-water suite, because Sandals brought them to the Caribbean—and they’re even more luxurious and spectacular than anywhere else in the world. Glass floors offer a view to the bottom of the sea. Villas have an infinityedge plunge pool over the water. Bungalows let you enjoy peaceful serenity al fresco in a Tranquility Soaking Tub™ for two located right on the deck. SkyPool Butler Suites
Who ever thought of putting a pool in the sky? Spoiler alert: Sandals did. Their spacious SkyPool Suites defy
imagination, with walls of glass doors that open to an infinity-edge plunge pool and blends seamlessly into the distant ocean horizon, and an outdoor Tranquility Soaking Tub for two. Indoors, luxury is found in exquisite details like white quartz vanities with backlit mirrors and a freestanding marble tub. Millionaire Suites
You don’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy the experience of being one. Millionaire Suites are quite literally the epitome of luxury at Sandals, combining indoor refinement and outdoor glamour. Some Millionaire Suites are perched high atop a bluff, boasting a 180-degree view of the island’s best ocean views, and featuring a
zero-entry plunge pool with a waterfall and whirlpool. Other Millionaire Suites offer secluded luxury, including a private patio with a pool. But all Millionaire Suites are the ultimate retreats providing a priceless romantic escape. Crystal Lagoon Swim-up Butler Suites
Why would you want to walk to your suite when you can swim-up to it? You can step down into a refreshing lagoon-style pool right from your patio, often while enjoying a picture-perfect ocean view. You can even soak in the romance with a patio Tranquility Soaking Tub for two, al fresco with a privacy curtain, along with equally stunning spa-style marble baths on the inside. It’s
romance, luxury, and style, all in one spectacular package. Rondoval™ Suites
Perched by the beach with the sound of the sea serving as a soundtrack, Rondoval Suites are the most exotic suites in the Caribbean. These round luxurious sanctuaries imbue a Zen-like ambiance encircled by astonishing natural beauty. Think round marble tubs floating on beds of river rocks, private patios with plunge pools or a swim-up pool, outdoor shower grottos and hammocks. These luxurious suites celebrate love that’s eternal. Whichever unique suite at Sandals Resorts you choose; you will elevate your romance while living out your dreams at the resorts made for love.

But it also boasts excellent restaurants with neue küche (nouvelle cuisine) or more traditional fare— remember to make reservations! Contemporary galleries, dance, music and architecture are perfect for the art lover.

Go on set: LEOPOLDSKRON PALACE
Originally the home of a Salzburg princearchbishop in 1736, Leopoldskron Palace played home to the von Trapp family in The Sound of Music. The best part? You can stay here. While rates are a bit pricey, you can also stay in the Meierhof, a former administrative building next door, for a bit less. Want to reenact the famous “hills are alive” opening scene? That location is actually a town called Mehlweg in the German Alps, but is only a 20-minute drive from Salzburg.
Why: If you love history, castles and miles of unspoiled nature, Northumberland is the place for your honeymoon. It is the northernmost county of England and features 128 kilometres of beach, quaint markets and of course, historic castles and forts, including a portion of Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches across the U.K.
Go on set: ALNWICK CASTLE
As a Harry Potter fan, visiting the site of Hogwarts will obviously be the most important of all the movie’s filming locations. Alnwick Castle portrayed the prestigious wizarding school in Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets. Keep in mind that the castle is closed in the winter, so plan your visit for between the end of March and the end of October.
Why: The Mamanuca Islands (there are 20) are the most accessible of Fiji’s string of tropical isles. Fiji is a paradise for adventure and nature lovers with surfing, hiking, helicopter tours and skydiving. There are also laidback activities, spas and, of course, loads of beaches to lie on.
Go on set: MANA ISLAND
Survivor has filmed eight seasons in the Mamanuca Islands. The cast and crew of Survivor stayed at Mana Resort and it’s where you can visit the Survivor challenge area, but you’ll likely want to stay somewhere a bit more luxurious. Looking to rough it a bit? There are backpacker hotels on Mana, too.

Always be prepared DON’T SHOW UP TO THE BRIDAL BOUTIQUE EMPTY-HANDED. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO PACK.
The appointment is booked and you’re ready to find your perfect gown, but you start to worry about what you should bring to try on dresses. Finding the right gown can seem like a stressful experience. But don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than you think – as long as you’re prepared.
{
HAIR ELASTIC Some dresses have intricately designed backs and straps, and long hair can cover a dress’s best feature. Make sure you have something to tie your hair up with so that you can see your dress from all angles.
{
UNDERWEAR The best thing you can do for yourself is pack or wear reliable undergarments. Many brides choose to go braless on their big day, but you should bring an old strapless bra to your appointment. Some dresses fit better if you have a strapless bra on, and you might feel more comfortable as your consultant does up the back for you. A well-worn strapless bra can be your best friend as you jump from dress to dress.
WATER AND A SNACK Many people don’t realize that trying on wedding gowns can be quite a workout! If you have your heart set on a large puffy ball gown, the weight of the fabric can really take a toll on your body. Wedding gowns have lots of material in them to give them lift and shape, which can also weigh them down, so make sure to bring water with you to stay hydrated. When you’re sweating underneath a dress’s crinoline, a cold bottle of water can really save the day.
♥
Most importantly, bring a couple people you love and trust. (Check with the salon/ store regarding the number of people you’re allowed. Numbers may be restricted.) Ask them to weigh in with their opinions, but remember that you’re the one wearing your perfect gown; make sure your party knows that your opinion matters most! TODAYS B R I DE .C A • 1 1 8

LOOKING GOOD, MAN Can we talk about grooms for a moment? Often we hear “It’s the bride’s day.” Can we stop with that? The groom is just as important and deserves to be noticed and celebrated just as much as any bride. And so, dear grooms, here are some tips for your wedding day look.
WHEN IT COMES TO STYLE, WE CAN’T FORGET ABOUT THE GROOMS

Don’t skimp on the primp Brides are not the only ones who deserve to be pampered before the big day. Get a facial so your skin is glowing (do so well before the big day in case your skin reacts badly) and indulge in a mani/ pedi. Photographs of sliding that ring on will look better with well-groomed nails. And if it’s a beach wedding, everyone will thank you for getting a pedicure. Have your hair cut a week or so before the big day, so your hair looks fresh, but not too fresh. And don’t forget a stressreducing massage!

DON’T FORGET ONE IMPORTANT THING: OWN. THAT. LOOK. Keep in mind that you don’t have to go matchy-matchy with your wedding party. Groomsmen/groomswomen can wear different colour suits. For two-groom weddings, sticking with shades of the same colour palette (but not wearing the exact same colour) can be nice. If possible, grooms can work with their tailor to create a semi-matching look in secret, so that first look is still a surprise for one another.
Think outside the black tux Back in the day (not that long ago, really), it was assumed that every groom would wear a black tux. And the groomsmen would, too. And then they could all stand up at the altar, looking like cookie-cutter versions of men. Who decided that was the rule? Shake things up. Go for bold colours, prints and different textures. A velvet jacket? Yes, please! A floral shirt rather than the classic white? Also good. Express yourself through your wardrobe. (And, if that means a traditional black tux, go for it. We won’t judge.)
Accessorize that look Hats, scarves, cufflinks, watches, pocket squares, lapel pins – these are all ways to show off your personality and taste. Subtle pops of colour can be really interesting. Prior to your wedding day, be sure you learn how to tie a tie, if you don’t already, and figure out how to fold a pocket square correctly.
Pack extras for the day You’ll want to be comfortable above all else, and this may mean having a bag of extra clothing to be prepared. An extra undershirt or dress shirt can be handy if it’s a hot day and you’re getting a little sweaty. If you’re wearing rented or new shoes, bring an old, comfy pair to put on for dancing (Chucks or Vans are always a fun wedding look). And you may want to consider bringing an entirely different reception outfit. If a bride can wear two dresses, you can wear two suits!
Treat yo’self Renting a tux is easy and convenient. But if you have a need for it, consider buying a custom suit rather than renting for the day. If you’re going black tie, you may not have the need for a formal tuxedo in your everyday life, but if your wedding style is more laidback/boho/casual, a nice suit can be a great investment. If you do go this route, have your name and wedding date embroidered on the inside of the jacket.

Home sweet home Despite their wealth and ability to fly guests anywhere in the world, many celeb couples tie the knot in the privacy of their own homes. Hilary Duff, Ariana Grande, Julia Roberts, Ellen DeGeneres, and Gina Rodriguez are just a few brides who married on their home turf.
Making it rain Who spent the most on their nuptials? These unions had some pretty hefty price tags.
Dress trends If the past year has shown us anything, it’s that when it comes to gown trends, there really aren’t any! Just go with your personal style. Issa Rae chose a huge ballgown (Vera Wang), Paris Hilton wore a stunning lace gown (Oscar de la Renta), and Meadow Walker wore a simple slip dress (Givenchy).
