aughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council joined Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Transportation Minister Glen Murray, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Linda Jeffrey and Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca at Conair/Cuisinart Consumer Products in Vaughan, where the Premier announced the government’s commitment to extend Highway 427 to Major Mackenzie Drive. The Premier said the investment is part of the government’s strategy to create jobs, help Ontario create a competitive business environment and help people in their everyday lives. “This is a major win for the City of Vaughan and the fulfillment of a promise to get the extension of the 427 approved during this term of office,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “I am pleased that Premier Wynne and her government acted on this important file. This highway extension will provide economic growth opportunities by better connecting communities, and improving the flow of traffic as well as goods and services in the Vaughan Enterprise Zone, one of the most valuable employment

areas in the GTA.” The Highway 427 extension is included in the Ontario 2013 Budget. If the Budget Bill is passed, construction on the 6.6 kilometre highway extension would begin in 2016/17. The extension is part of the Ontario government’s commitment to improve infrastructure across the province. The extension includes three new interchanges, nine bridges and protection for a future transitway and transit stations along the west side of the highway. The Highway 427 extension will have a major impact on the Vaughan Enterprise Zone, an integrated multi-modal transportation services and economic hub of regional importance in the City’s southwest corner. The Vaughan Enterprise Zone encompasses an area of more than 1,120 hectares (2,767 acres) and is currently home to more than 350 businesses. Future development opportunities in the Enterprise Zone are for 48 million square feet of industrial space with an employment potential of 46,000 jobs.

Book Review

Straw Bale Gardens By Joel Karsten

I

remember writing about straw bale housing construction 20 years ago, when I first read about that fascinating process. Developed in the early 1900s in Nebraska in light of a scarcity of wood and abundance of straw, this concept has caught on around the world as a way to build homes that save energy and money. Recently, I was delighted to discover that the idea of using straw bales in nontraditional ways now includes gardens. Joel Karsten is an author, lecturer and straw bale gardening pioneer whose book, Straw Bale Gardens : The Breakthrough Method for Growing Vegetables Anywhere, Earlier and with No Weeding, hit the shelves this year. With the growing trend toward urban agriculture and container gardening across the Greater Toronto Area, it strikes me that many of our readers may be interested in this informative guide. Published by Cool Springs Press in February, Karsten’s book is a practical illustrated guide to producing an impressive harvest in soilless, weedfree straw bales. The seeds of this idea were sown won Karsten’s family farm, where year after year, he noticed sprouts springing from stacked bales and growing into hardy plants. He developed a passion

Reviewed by Dorothea Helms for gardening and spent years studying and innovating. The formula for success involves four elements: straw bales, water, fertilizer and sunshine – things that most home and condominium owners can accommodate on some level. The author calls straw bales “nature’s perfect container,” as they provide a growing medium as well. I find this book fascinating in its organization and beauty. It is packed with interesting information, such as the difference between straw and hay. I’m embarrassed to say that I live in a rural area, and this was news to me. In fact, straw and hay are different species of plants. Hay is green and is used to feed livestock. Straw is yellow or gold and is perfect for bedding material for livestock. That’s just one example of what makes this book such a good read. If the idea of creating a straw bale garden in your yard or on your patio appeals, this is an amazing starting place. There are pictures and tips about how to move the bales around your yard, plan your garden, get the bales conditioned for growing, planting, harvesting and gorgeous colour photos and illustrations to accompany each step. Karsten has also included an FAQ section,

a list of resources and plenty of advice on trouble-shooting if and when you need it. The benefits include economy, ease of planting and harvesting, the elimination of insect or disease problems from previous plantings in soil, and because straw releases heat as it decomposes, you can plant a lot earlier than your soil green-thumb friends. Best of all, however, is the straw bale’s ultimate advantage – NO WEEDING! I’m sold – on the concept and the book. It is available in paperback with the ISBN number of 9781591865506. Whether you live in a sprawling estate home, a compact townhome or even in a high-rise condo, you just might have the ideal spot for a straw-bale garden of your own.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

Inspired living in King Township Top quality of life beckons from one of Ontario’s prettiest spots

Dorothea Helms Connects people and ideas, and can be reached at writer@wsws.ca

When it comes to location, location, location, King Township is a sensation, sensation, sensation! Set amid the beautiful rolling hills of the Oak Ridges Moraine, the Township is home to charming communities including King City, Nobleton and Schomberg. From its proud beginnings as a settlement in 1836, the Township has grown into a vibrant modern community that is York Region’s most lightly populated municipality. Slow growth has enabled King to retain its small-town charm and rural ambience. Topographically, King encompasses a striking dichotomy that includes flat expanses of the Holland Marsh. Perhaps best known for its horse and cattle farms, the area is graced with glorious natural areas, convenient urban amenities, and idyllic places to live, work and play. Discover abundant parks and recreational venues. Culture buffs appreciate activities and resources in the King Township Museum, public libraries and community halls. The Township also collaborates with community groups such as Arts Society King to create arts, culture and recreation programming for residents of all ages. King City The largest of King Township’s villages at population 7,350, King City is located at Keele Street and the King Road. Showcasing an eclectic melange of architectural styles, King City displays a uniquely appealing character. Because of the wide range of schools within the town, children can go from kindergarten through high school and stay in King City. In addition, residents enjoy a Public Library, Seniors Centre, Community Recreation Centre, soccer fields, baseball diamonds and walking trails. Serviced by GO Train and GO bus service, King City is just 20 minutes from Toronto and encompasses art galleries, restaurants, gift shops and a shopping plaza. King City is home to the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, which operates a turf wicket cricket facility and draws competitors and visitors from around the world. You may notice King City from time to time in television productions. Gracing a beautiful stretch of Ontario countryside, this village is often featured because of its stunning views and picturesque landscapes. This village tends to attract long-term residents who appreciate the opportunity to live in a rural setting close to urban amenities. King City is an affluent community with many well-known equestrian farms. The King Campus of Seneca College is located on the scenic grounds of the former Eaton Estate, and the area features the Country Day School and King City Montessori School. Local farms offer a variety of fresh country experiences from picking your own apples in scenic orchards to cutting your own holiday tree in a snow-blanketed wonderland. Residents celebrate life in King with annual festivals, musical and charity events. Nobleton Conveniently located at the intersection of Highway #27 and King Road, Nobleton has a population of approximately 3,100. This area of King Township offers a more rural atmosphere for those who seek estate homes on acreage and distinctive architecture. The Village of Nobleton boasts public, separate and private schools, as well as a library, churches, a shopping plaza and much more. King Township’s Parks, Recreation and Culture department is located in the Dr. William Laceby

Nobleton Community Centre and Arena, and offers an array of programming for all ages throughout the year. Among the many natural and recreational amenities within Nobleton are Cherry Park, Cold Creek Conservation Area (home to trails and seasonal activities and events), Davis Park, and Nobleton Community Sports Park, which features three baseball diamonds, a hockey/basketball court, four tennis courts, an outdoor pool, beach volleyball court and soccer field. Every year, Nobleton holds one of Ontario’s most exciting Victoria Day Celebrations, and has for over 40 years. A community of caring, involved residents, Nobleton offers numerous opportunities to get involved in organizations and associations. Schomberg This charming community of 2,650 residents is located in the southwest corner of Highways #9 and #27. Home of the famous Schomberg Agricultural Spring Fair, which will be held the last weekend in May, the village has maintained the historical flavour of its quaint Main Street. The Fair has been an integral part of Schomberg’s identity for 160 years. Visitors enjoy a midway, demolition derby, musical entertainment, vendors and exhibitors, contests and other activities. Since the mid-nineteenth century Schomberg’s Main Street has bustled with customers interested in the shopkeepers’ wares. Back then, the streetscape included a blacksmith shop, wagon shop, tannery, tailor shop, butcher and carriage works. Today, you’ll find art galleries, antique stores, craft and gift shops, furniture stores and restaurants among the many town merchants. And few Ontario villages can compare with Schomberg in the summer, with its hanging baskets and container gardens resplendent with colourful flowers. In addition to elegant century homes, Schomberg offers a selection of new home communities. Within the village, residents enjoy schools, churches, a Community Hall and a Recreation Centre. Outdoor-lovers and active residents can choose from Clifton Graham Park, Dufferin Marsh, Fox Trail Parkette, Nieuwland Park (complete with an accessible playground and walking trails), Schomberg Lions Play Parkette’s playground, and Schomberg Osin Lions Park, which has a soccer field, baseball diamond, accessible playground structure.

You’re welcome! Mayor Steve Pellegrini says, “As you drive a few minutes north of Toronto and watch the urban sprawl turn into the open vastness of rolling green countryside, you’ll know you have entered our beautiful King. This is what sets King apart, and this is what our residents love about their home … I invite you to visit King, and fall in love as so many do. Hike, cycle, eat, shop and enjoy the country just above the city. Why not move your family here? We want you.” You will find superb new home communities popping up across King Township, perfect for those seeking prestige and convenience in exceptional surroundings. To find out more,

KYLEMORE CELEBRATES SPRING WITH A NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD RELEASE AND TWO NEW MODELS

I

On Saturday, May 25th, Kylemore Communities will release Parkside East, a new neighbourhood of its popular 31-, 35- and 43-foot homes in the established East Village of the award-winning Angus Glen Community in Markham. “Only in Angus Glen will you experience an award-winning golf course community near to state-of-theart recreation, tennis, shops, parks and conveniences with access to everything great about this City,” says Kylemore’s President Patrick O’Hanlon “We’re thrilled to have more of these highly desirable homes. The rear lane concept is a proven winner among our buyers who appreciate the fabulous streetscapes which result in having the garage at the back, not to mention the extra light indoors and the privacy of a courtyard-style back garden,” explains O’Hanlon. Angus Glen is an architecturally controlled master-planned community. Homes are constructed with exteriors of stone, brick and stucco with decorative accents, steep roof pitches and mouldings which result in attractive streetscapes. To help launch this special Parkside East neighbourhood, Designer Jane Lockhart of Jane Lockhart Interior Design in

Toronto, has added her signature style to two exciting new models to show the appeal of these family-sized, two-storey designs. Jane Lockhart has collaborated with Kylemore on eleven earlier Model Homes and has first-hand experience with the company’s approach to building a home of lasting quality. She is skilled at translating this commitment into models which illustrate an appreciation for life in a Kylemore home. “It’s a treat to design two model homes at the same time. It gives us an opportunity to showcase the versatility of a Kylemore floorplan simply by creating a unique colour palette for each home with stunning results! These spacious homes are designed for the way today’s modern families live – with all the comfort, style and detail homeowners expect from Kylemore,” says Jane. The Oakley is a 4-bedroom 3,518 square foot home that Jane describes as evocative of haberdashery, incorporating classic influences and darker colours with touches of Ralph Lauren style. The second Model is a 3-bedroom home of 2,338 square feet called The Riley. Jane describes the ideal buyer for this home as couples who are downsizing and families with young

children as there is plenty of room to grow in this home. Jane’s design theme for The Riley taps into current trends which lean towards lighter and fresher colours. Kylemore’s trend-forward designs include an ensuite bathroom for each of the bedrooms. Deluxe interiors have gas fireplace, natural finish oak staircase, 9-foot main floor ceilings, cornice mouling in dining room, granite countertops and quality cabinetry in kitchens and a host of other desirable finishes. Each Parkside East home will also include an Upgrade Kitchen Appliance package. G

ive Kids a Chance recently announced the receipt of $100,000 donation from Crystal Homes and Trades towards the construction of a new educational/ cultural centre in Jocotenango, Guatemala. This large donation will allow Give Kids a Chance to realize their dream of creating a permanent and safe location for the hundreds of children they are assisting in the village, with their educational, food and arts programs. Currently GKAC also sponsors the education of over fifty underpriveleged children in public, high school or university. The charity pays their school fees and provides money for books and uniforms to children who otherwise would not be able to attend school.

The new building is planned as a new educational and community centre where the children can meet after school for extracuricular help and cultural enrichment. Here they will be exposed to activities such as theatre, visual arts, computer skills, filmmaking, journalism, poetry, ballet and breakdancing. The building project is expected to start shortly as soon as Give Kids a Chance receives final approval to start construction. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela Give Kids a Chance is run entirely by volunteers and there are no administration fees.
