The photo shoot with her left us in awe. “Fitness has become my passion because it is not a one-dimensional avenue; it’s led me down different roads, allowing me to challenge the status quo of what Today’s Woman can do, be, and represent,” says Ashley. “And, who doesn’t love the post-feeling of getting a good workout in, giving your body the daily opportunity to reach new goals, and knowing that you did something for you!” Read more about her on page 12. ONCE I SAW CHANGES IN MY BODY INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY I KNEW THAT IS WHAT I WANTED TO DO AS A CAREER.”

BIG WIN I competed in the bikini division for bodybuilding shows! I competed in five shows and moved my way up to a first place win in the Ferrigno Legacy show. I love having that memory and knowing that in my mid-thirties I was able to accomplish something so big! WHAT I LEARNED That was an amazing part of my life, learning how my body responds to certain foods, certain lifts, etc. I did a 26 week prep for this which consisted of a high protein. I did two-a-day workouts. Seeing my body change was absolutely amazing. MOTIVATING FORCE My son is my motivation honestly. He looks up to me for many things. He is so involved with sports and loves to work out with me. FITNESS JOURNEY I have always loved sports/fitness. I have always wanted to help people, but I didn’t know in what outlet I wanted to do this as. I started working out and changing my lifestyle. Once I saw changes in my body internally and externally I knew that was what I wanted to do as a career. READ IT...RECITE IT... PRAY ABOUT IT...”

BIG WIN My last competition was the Natural Indianapolis November of 2017. I finished 2nd and 3rd in my division (bikini). Next stop is Pittsburgh Nationals in late August. DIET Right now I follow an intermittent fast diet 4 days per week meaning I eat from 2-10pm only, four meals and the other three days, I follow a typical bodybuilder diet whereas I eat about five small meals and drink a gallon of water daily. FITNESS ATTRACTION My first sport which put me through college was track and field at Eastern Kentucky University. Bodybuilding became my passion after just wanting a new challenge. KEEP MOTIVATED I often revisit my goal. Read it. Recite it. Pray about it. Mostly, I stroll through social media and watch other accomplishments for inspiration. I also continuously read uplifting material. EXCUSE My biggest excuse if I had one would be my daughter. However, excuses become habit so I learn to shift things around to fit in my workout and foods. BEST WORKOUT The best exercise anyone can do is to surround yourself with positive reading/ media material. This keeps the mind stimulated and focused to reach goals. When the mind is right, the rest follows. ERICKA HERD, 42 JOB: HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHER AT JEFFERSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL FITNESS TRAINER Makeup: Denise Cardwell, Image Works Studios

STRETCHING HERSELF MOTIVATION My dogs are definitely the motivation for walking. It’s hard to resist their cute little faces when they give me that look that they want to go walk. FITNESS JOURNEY In my twenties, I worked out sporadically in different gyms. In my thirties, I did a little bit of kickboxing. Then I got my first dog and started walking every day and in 2007 I started salsa dancing and have been doing this passionately ever since. In 2016, I added Argentine tango and got a new gym membership. BIG WIN I don’t really compete at anything I do, but we did perform at the World Fest in Louisville last year with the Louisville Argentine Tango Society. It took about 6 months of preparation, dance classes with Christy Byers, who came up with the choreography. WORKOUT SPOTS Seneca and Cherokee Park are my favorite places to walk. RECOMMEND I do recommend to everyone to get out of the house and get your blood flowing, even if it’s just for 30 minutes a day. EXERCISE The type of exercise that does the most good for my body, but I am not too fond of is cardio. This has always been something that I know I need to add more of to my fitness regimen. But like any other process in life, there are always going to be things you don’t like doing in order to be successful. WHAT SHE’S LEARNED (Fitness training) has taught me the rooted understanding of discipline, commitment, and consistency. BIG WINS I competed in my first powerlifting competition on June 30, 2018, breaking three national records of the 148-pound weight class. I [also] was a contestant on American Ninja Warrior held in Indianapolis. Ever since I was a little girl, watching the old TV show called American Gladiators, I told myself that I was going to be on a show like that whenever I was of age. HER MOTIVATION As I am able to witness the fight and determination of others to complete the final rep of their last set, it’s a constant reminder to never give up and to never accept the feeling of being comfortable — embrace the feeling of being uncomfortable. HONESTLY, I COULDN’T TELL YOU THE LAST TIME I MISSED A WORKOUT.”

FITNESS JOURNEY After meeting and marrying my husband Daniel, who was into bodybuilding, and after we had our sons, I had a desire to challenge myself physically. So I started weight training, and then competing. That was about 20 years ago, and I’ve been addicted ever since! BIG WIN My most recent accomplishment is getting my personal training facility built, a dream that’s been in us for many years. MOTIVATION With all of my years of research of nutrition and physique development, God’s miraculous design of the human body, and what it’s capable of, is so much my motivation. Our bodies are resilient and fight to be well everyday, always regenerating and healing itself. That motivates me to do what I can for my body. Weight-bearing exercises and proper nutrition will absolutely change the shape of your physique, for the good, if that’s what a person desires, making it strong and lean. I want to take care of it, so I can live the best, most vibrant, energetic life possible. ENCOURAGEMENT Please know: it’s never too late to start. BEST BODIES | FLEXIBILITY

FITNESS ATTRACTION I exercise to live well. I love to move, and I also want to stay fit and toned and balanced as I age. Working out makes me feel alternately energetic and calm. STOPS THE PAIN I’ve had a series of autoimmune disorders in my life, and exercise is the only way I can stay ahead of the pain. WHAT SHE EATS I am vegan and have found that the diet fuels me physically, keeps me trim, and enables me to address my ethical concerns about killing animals and desecrating the environment for food. HER TURNING POINT I have always been active and played many sports into high school. But as I got more involved in academics, and then after college and graduate schools working as a journalist and editor, I found little time for exercise and gained a lot of weight and tension. When I discovered yoga and pilates at age 45, I felt reborn in my body and have been able to maintain a healthy weight and fitness ever since. NEXT We are introducing the Nation’s first stretchfit assisted stretching facility at our second studio scheduled to open in Cherokee Triangle this fall, and I have been busy learning and teaching the techniques for improving flexibility in all parts of the body.

I EXERCISE BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY STRONG.”

18 August 2018 / TodaysWomanNow.com 18 August 2018 / TodaysWomanNow.com

BIG WIN My most recent fitness accomplishment was going from 120.4 pounds to 136.6 pounds in a year. The reason this was a major accomplishment for me was because my muscle mass went up by 10 percent as my fat percentage went down. My goal was to gain muscle, so I prepared for this accomplishment by staying dedicated to my workouts and nutrition. MOTIVATING FORCE Keeping up daily motivation can sometimes be difficult. I do this by reminding myself where I want to be physically and mentally with my health. Of course, there are days when I don’t feel like working out, but those are the days where you really have to push yourself! FITNESS JOURNEY I grew up dancing and playing sports my whole life, so I have always been physically fit. But, it wasn’t until going into my senior year of high school that I started to have a passion for working out. I started learning exercises by watching workout videos online and began to teach myself. I’M ALWAYS SETTING NEW GOALS TO MEET”

BIG WIN My most recent fitness accomplishment is doing the Louisville Triathlon. Before that it was competing in a powerlifting meet where I took first in my age and weight. WHAT SHE VALUES I'm heavier now than I've probably ever been and I feel fantastic. It took a long time to get to the point where I like me. And I think we can like ourselves while working toward change and improvement. FITNESS JOURNEY I was a runner in high school, but developed an eating disorder and that never really leaves you. In my mid thirties I discovered CrossFit. It's not just physical, it's also very mental. I don't CrossFit anymore, but it's where I found my strength. I learned to be strong, mentally and physically and that feeling of empowerment within yourself is what fueled my passion. FOR MY SONS I want them to see a strong woman and make healthy choices in their lives regarding relationships, food, fitness, and life in general. RECOMMEND Without a doubt, weight lifting is what I'd recommend — heavy weights. It does so much good for the body and mind as a whole. MORNING MEAL My go-to breakfasts are usually eggs and oats or gluten free toast with laughing cow cheese and smoked salmon and berries. EXERCISE SHOULD BE FUN.”

COMMUNITY I moved to Louisville, and the volleyball community became my core group of friends and favorite past-time. My teams are competitive and want to win, but we all know that we are there to enjoy it and support each other’s internal challenges to improve. WORKOUT The YMCA has a FIT interval class that I love. It mixes cardio and weights. It is held in the gym and feels like being at practice with wind sprints, pushups, jumping jacks, and peers to push you. MOTIVATING FORCE I can feel when I haven’t worked out in a while. My energy level drops, and I get anxious to move again and work up a good sweat. ABS After two kids and being an older mom, I’m pretty happy with my abs. It takes some work to maintain and it’s always a battle to make healthy eating choices, but that’s exactly where the pizza and beer sit! Core strength is essential in everything you do. BIG WIN I’m trying to play in more doubles tournaments. Since the competition seems to be half my age, I focus on playing smart and train to maintain endurance. YOU WILL DO WAY MORE THAN YOU COULD EVER DO ALONE.”

BIG WIN Most recently I qualified for the CrossFit Games with a ranking of number 10 in the world in the 60+ age bracket. To prepare for it I had to wait for my broken shoulder to heal and do lots of physical therapy at Pro-Rehab and at home. Once my shoulder healed, I had to work really smart and really hard to get stronger and rebuild my aerobic base. MOTIVATING FORCE Knowing that it is a major blessing from God that I am healthy, and not injured. It is truly a privilege to compete on this level especially at this age. Everyone in my immediate family is either a former pro football player or former Division one college athlete. It’s fun and challenging to find out what I can do. BEST WORKOUT CrossFit exercises are the best for my body. That includes weight lifting, running, rowing, pull-ups, wall balls, squats...I highly recommend Crossfit to all ages. It will change the shape of your body. COMMUNITY The community is much fun. They will let you know when they haven’t seen you in a while — in a friendly way. You will do way more than you could ever do alone. I workout with my trainer, Madison Kleinhenz and a few special Crossfitters who are willing to go through the riggers with me. (Shout out to Sherri, Sarah, Kristin, Meghan, Tara, Carrie, Justin & many others who’ll workout with me). Makeup: Denise Cardwell, Image Works Studios

FIGHTING DISEASE

WITH WORKOUT

FITNESS ATTRACTION I work out for several reasons: it invigorates me and controls my cholesterol. I have always done some type of exercise. Running is [and] was my first love and passion. My late husband was an exceptional runner and held records in high school so I think watching and admiring him is what peaked my interest. BIG WIN My most recent fitness accomplishment has been lowering my cholesterol from 237 to 210 within the past 6 months. I am hoping it is under 200 when I test again. BIGGEST EXCUSE I'm tired, and I can get it in tomorrow. Honestly, I usually just do not feel like working out but a multiple sclerosis diagnosis nine years ago, steadily climbing cholesterol, and family history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol motivates me to eat better and be as healthy as I can so I usually just do it! BEST WORKOUT Spinning. It's a great cardio workout, strengthens your core, is less taxing on your knees and hips and you can work at your own pace and resistance. AND LIFE GAINS JOURNEY In 2011, I had a horrible health year: foot surgery, breast cancer surgery, stress fractures in the same foot and a 4-month bout with pneumonia. By the grace of God, I made it through. At the beginning of 2012, one of my doctors laid down the gauntlet and challenged me to lose 10 pounds in a month using her dietary program. I ended up losing that 10 pounds in the first week. And praise God, by July 2012, I had dropped over 80 pounds. GOALS My most recent accomplishment has to be deadlifting 176 pounds. BEST EXERCISE Weightlifting. I truly believe all women should incorporate weights into their workouts. Building lean muscle mass in addition to some cardio is so much more helpful in burning fat and maintaining fitness than cardio alone. MOTIVATION Working out helps me better cope with the stresses of life and helps me to manage my arthritis symptoms. With my husband and son, there is no better way to spend quality time together as a family than working toward fitness goals together. DORIS H., 51 JOB: INVESTIGATOR, DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

BREATHING SPACE FITNESS CHOICE Yoga is so good for me, and I’d recommend it to anyone. I’m a mover and an action taker. I naturally find it very hard to be still, breathe, and simply rest. Yet I’ve learned that it is essential that I do so. BEYOND EXERCISE I’ve also learned that it’s not all about exercise. I need to be aware of how much stress is in my life, if I’m sleeping, how close I am to community, my nutrition, and my environment. We lived in a home with toxic mold (invisible and unbeknownst to us) for years and all the exercise in the world couldn’t help me in that environment. MOTIVATING FORCE I was stressed to the max and as a homeschooling mom, I got very few moments just for myself. I joined the YMCA to get stronger, take better care of myself so I could be a better mom, and quite honestly, just for some breathing space and adult conversation. EXCUSES I have to regularly remind myself that I can actually be a better mom (of 5 kids!) in so many ways when I care well for myself physically. Working out and caring for myself are extremely important...and I don’t just mean in the modeling world. I am also speaking about my career as a mom. Their eyes are on me constantly as they are both at a very impressionable age. SHANNON BURTON, 46 JOB: PRINT/RUNWAY MODEL AND ACTRESS HELEN WELLS AGENCY AND BMG CHICAGO

INSPIRATIONS My mom because she is a fit woman and takes care of her body. Bart [her stepdad] because he goes to the gym everyday and gets us the proper foods to take care of our bodies. My dad because he is a fitness trainer and knows a lot about working out. And, of course, all of my coaches. FAV SPORT With field hockey, I love that we are competitive and our team works together. ANYTIME I LIFT MORE, I’LL TAKE THAT AS A WIN.”

WHAT WORKS What has worked the best for me is shorter, more intense workouts with weight. I feel like I’m in better shape, capacity-wise and aesthetically. It also fits my lifestyle, as I can’t devote hours to a workout. FITNESS JOURNEY I was involved in multiple sports growing up, was a college athlete, and then tried a few different means of exercise until I found Crossfit, which is what I’ve been doing for exercise for the last three years. GROUP WORKOUTS It’s more motivating and fun to work out with friends. In a group setting, I’ve learned new skills or gained a different perspective, or when I’ve been encouraged (sometimes pushed) to ‘go’ for something I didn’t think I could do, and I do it. MOTIVATION Two things keep me motivated: On a smaller scale, I know how much better I feel when I workout regularly. On a bigger level, I am inspired daily at Kids Center. The incredible children we serve face adversity and overcome a variety of challenges. I don’t want to take my abilities or health for granted. EXCUSES Time or sleep? If you workout early in the morning, the only obstacle is getting out of bed. WINNING I track my personal records for weightlifting and times for certain workouts. Anytime I lift more or able to move better or faster, I’ll take that as an accomplishment. ROLLER DERBY

CHALLENGE

FITNESS JOURNEY I barely passed the physical training test to enter into the Army, but once I got to my permanent duty station, where we ran 4 miles every morning, I learned to like it. But it’s training for Derby City Roller Girls, in and outside of practice, that really challenged and inspired me to be fit. BIG WIN Every season, I try to just make it another season! This November it’ll be 9 years, with my goal being at least 10. Lately, I have set my alarm early to start my day with a little lifting. It motivates me throughout my work day. After work, I usually look forward to my daily gym routine to help me de-stress. PROUD MOMENT I always wanted arms like Linda Hamilton in Terminator or like Michelle Obama. I may not be quite to their level, but I do take great pride when people ask me if I workout and then say “I can tell by your arms.” SHELLY PRICE, 44 JOB: CLINICAL DOCUMENTATION IMPROVEMENT SPECIALIST, ROBLEY REX VA MEDICAL CENTER, ALL STARS TEAM ROSTER OF THE DERBY CITY ROLLER GIRLS Makeup: Denise Cardwell, Image Works Studios

SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS — the Healthy Way

Ursula Burns Brady says that one of my favorite meals is meatballs made using grass-fed beef. Flavor the meat with sea salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a little onion. Roll into balls and place in a cookie sheet that has pats of grass-fed butter (Kerrigold is the brand we use) and cook at 400 degrees for about 25-30min. Then I will sauté spiraled butternut and green squash in butter as well, place meat balls on top and top with salsa. That’s our spaghetti!

Stephanie says her body responds to HIIT training.

7. And for Dessert?

Banana Cinnamon Ice Cream 1 frozen banana cut into chunks, ⅛ tsp cinnamon, ⅛ tsp vanilla Put all ingredients in blender on low until smooth. Enjoy immediately!

“I LIKE TO INCORPORATE CARDIO WITH WEIGHTS IN CIRCUITS,” SHE EXPLAINS.

A circuit may look like this: • Treadmill sprints 30 seconds • Box jumps 30 seconds • Lateral Raises 30 seconds • Push ups 30 seconds • Repeat 3x

Sharon says she starts her day by reading and writing in a spiritual 365 day journal and a prayer on the way to work. This helps me to at least start out with the correct mind-frame.

13 Just Stir Dolores Jones says that she adds good carbohydrates to her diet by eating Kodiak Cakes muffins. I use the recipe on the side of the box but vamp it up with a protein mix vs milk and use half as much sugar — but it’s raw. I also use grass-fed butter. Each muffin has 8g of protein and taste great!

26 THINGS 22-23

THEIR PERMANENT REMINDERS Many of the women we photographed had tattoos that are intentionally meaningful to them.

24– 25 Marion Webb’s tattoo says: “‘Life, if well lived, is long enough,’ a quote by Seneca that I think is profound. Another reminder to make each day count!” Her left arm has I am that I am. It's a quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer. “The significance of this quote is that any sentence that starts with the words I am are a manifestation, so you always want to be careful which words follow I am because that's what will manifest eventually,” Marion says.

LOVE and AWARENESS The word Love on her wrist for both of her sons. “I had the “o” turned into a “q” because (my son) Quentin battles mental illness. Shaun Age also participates in “To write love on your arms” — suicide and self prevention harm campaign. And the “Out of the Darkness Walk” for suicide prevention (November 3, 2018).

24. Her side tattoo came from a card her friend sent her when Shaun was going through difficult times and this inspired her to keep pushing on. It says: “In the midst of winter I found that there was within me an endless summer” — Albert Camus

GIRLS ARE SO HARD ON THEMSELVES AND ONE ANOTHER. THEY THINK THEY ARE TOO BIG, OR UGLY, OR NOT FAST ENOUGH IN A SPORT. IT’S SAD BECAUSE EVERYONE SHOULD FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES.”
