pril is the perfect month, especially around Kentucky, as it starts with blooming trees and flowers and ends with the excitement of a giant festival. This month brings the “necessity” of shopping for something colorful to wear — hopefully a hat to wear to the big race or a lovely dress for Easter. So embrace the month, try on at least one hat, go see something — a parade, a bed race, Dawn at the Downs, the balloons… something. Rest in May.

Leave everyone wondering which is the more interesting piece of work...you or your hat. — Unknown

“I never know how many horses I will need to see in a day. Sometimes 10, sometimes 20.” Mary Jo’s job as an equine therapist takes her to racetracks, show barns, paddocks, and fields.

WHAT WORKS

What works for the horse is what works for equine therapist Mary Jo Robke. Interview by LUCY M. PRITCHETT / Photo by MELISSA DONALD

MARY JO ROBKE, 50

Equine therapist HOMETOWN: Amelia, Ohio NEIGHBORHOOD:

APRIL

2014

Mary Jo knows and loves horses — her father was a trainer and also owned horses while she was growing up. “I have been with horses all my life,” she says. “They are my first love. I rode my first horse at age 3. When I was 9, I galloped my first racehorse on a track. My dad’s guidance consisted of ‘just keep her between the fences.’” She tried a career as a nurse but found she preferred the company of horses, so she trained as an equine therapist with Dr. Marvin Cain, Kentucky veterinarian and co-founder of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, and apprenticed with equine therapist Diane Bolz.

Today, dressed in Levis and most likely a purple T-shirt with a pair of Earth Vegan shoes, Mary Jo is up with the sun and checking in with clients — trainers and owners — to see if any of their horses need a little TLC, Mary Jo-style. She spends winters at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans and the rest of the year seeing clients in Kentucky. “I start with a visual assessment of the horse and discern levels of comfort or discomfort,” she says. “I use pulsed electromagnetic field therapy to target inflammation or soothe muscle injuries and soreness.” Always dreaming of ways to help the horses that have so

enriched her life, Mary Jo developed Headliners, an equine cooling product that has been in the works since 2012 and will be introduced to the market this year just before Derby. “It is difficult to cool down an overheated horse,” she says. “The material used in Headliners extracts or pulls the heat out from a horse instead of driving the cold in, which is what happens when ice is used. It isn’t shocking to the horse like when applying ice.” Headliners will cool the horse using a body blanket, head pieces, and leg wraps. “I am passionate about what I do,” Mary Jo says. “I am always looking for ways to improve the lives of horses.”

Survival Skills

Jo-An’s survival advice for bartenders and other workers who have to rely on tips:

By MARIE BRADBY Photo by MELISSA DONALD

1. Engage your

customers. “You have to talk a lot, even if your feet are hurting so bad you want to cry.”

2. Get to know your

customers. “I’ve waited on some of them for 26 years. I know their families and children. They even took up a collection to help me with funeral expenses for my son, who passed away unexpectedly at age 29.”

3.

Don’t worry about making money. “Just have fun, and the money will come.”

Jo-An Holleman Bartender, Churchill Downs

4. Wear comfortable

A Party Every Day

J

o-An Holleman can’t wait to go to work every day. “It’s so much fun,” says Jo-An, who has been a bartender at Churchill Downs for 26 years. “I love it. Ninety-nine percent of the people are happy and old friends. It’s like a party every day.” In the off season, Jo-An serves drinks in The Parlay, the track’s simulcast wagering operation that includes the Gold Room for VIPs. “This is like a corner bar,” she says about the area, which has wall-to-wall flatscreen TVs and is where players can make wagers on races at other tracks. “You see the same people every day. If you don’t see them, it’s like you wonder how they’re doing.” During live racing, Jo-An is in the Paddock Bar where things can get really crazy, especially during the Kentucky Derby when more than 164,000 people are jockeying for a libation. Her Derby Day begins at 6 in the morning and ends 16 hours later. After her first Derby in 1988, Jo-An says she couldn’t

even walk. “You’re waiting on people the whole time,” she says. “You have to make the drinks so fast; you have to be a speed demon. But it’s so exciting. Everybody is so happy, even if they’re losing.” She’s met famous trainers, jockeys, owners, and celebrities; she’s even had a horse named after her. “I feel like I’m in some kind of movie or something,” she says. Jo-An’s true passion for the sport means she feels the ups and down of racing. She cried when Eight Belles collapsed in 2008 after the filly ran the race of her life in the Run for the Roses and had to be euthanized. Jo-An also felt the pain of many fans when the Breeder’s Cup favorite mare Zenyatta was beaten by a nose after being undefeated in 19 races. “The whole place was quiet,” she says. “But it just made me love her more.” Jo-An is also involved in the Race for Grace, an event that benefits the children of workers on the backside of the track.

shoes. “If your feet hurt, you are not going to be in a good mood.”

5.

Stay positive. “I cannot stand people who complain. They drag you down.”

HER MANE ATTRACTION She looks to capture the horse in action By LUCY M. PRITCHETT Photo by MELISSA DONALD

APRIL

Kathy Hunter’s turning point was more of a turning to than a turning from. She was happily working in visual merchandising as an in-store display stylist for Macy’s, a career she’d had for 20 years. She was considering a second source of income, and since her lifelong hobby had been photography, it seemed the perfect choice to pursue. So in 2007, Kathy began her new journey by picking up her camera. Three years later, she retired from Macy’s. “Both my grandfather and my father were amateur photographers,” Kathy says. “So, I guess I inherited my interest from them. My father kept a darkroom in the house, although he much preferred taking photographs to developing them. My grandfather had lots of camera equipment. On Sundays, we would go to his house and spend time looking through his many photo albums.” The grandfather she speaks of was the son of Louis Seelbach, founder and owner of Louisville’s iconic Seelbach Hotel. Kathy’s interest in horses came from two uncles: Warner Jones, owner of Hermitage Farms and the only person to breed winners of the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks, and a Breeders’ Cup race; and David Reynolds, owner of Tabasco Cat, winner of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 1994. Kathy started her business by taking portraits and working a wedding or two, but her fondness for horses and racing soon nudged its way to the forefront. Now, Kathy spends her time with her camera at the backside of Churchill Downs during racing season. Or at Keeneland in Lexington. Or even just the pastures in the neighborhood near her Sellersburg home. “I look to capture the horse in action with its flowing mane,” she says. “But more than that, I want to show the horse’s attitude — its spirit.” TODAY’S WOMAN

Janet Wolanin Alexander (right), a retired teacher and now owner of Swishtails, has been helping women create a very unique bond with their horses by making jewelry from real horse hair. “When one thinks of Louisville, horses and the arts spring to mind,” Janet says. “If you place the first and last letters of ‘horse’ in front of ‘art,’ you get ‘heart,’ and heart is what Swishtails is all about.” Janet makes bracelets and necklaces in many varieties. “By making a woman a one-of-a-kind bracelet or necklace from the hair of her own horse, I provide her with a unique way of demonstrating her love.”

One of my favorites is Hats for Hope, where proceeds benefit the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. If you haven’t been to this event in the past, mark it down right now on your calendar: April 17 from 6-9:30pm. New and gently used Derby hats will be available during the silent auction. Match up that hat with a purse from Mom’s Closet Resource Center’s Winning Purse Luncheon on April 30 at Churchill Downs. A terrific selection of unique purses will be auctioned to raise funds to help single moms. To the rest of the world, the Kentucky Derby might be the greatest two minutes in sports. But to locals, it’s much more… it’s the greatest month of celebrating and funding our charities.

itting amidst a plethora of Derby hats since mid-February has conjured visions of springtime. While most people consider the chirping of robins or the blooming of daffodils as the first sign of spring, mine came even earlier. FLOWER POWER One out of five people suffer from seasonal allergies, but those spring flowers may not be the culprit, says Dr. James Sublett of Family Allergy and Asthma. Pollens from fragrant, colorful flowers tend to be heavy, waxy, and sticky, making them less likely to be airborne. So go ahead, stop and smell the roses.

HORSEPLAY

Through hippotherapy, horses provide legs for children with neuromuscular disorders who may not be mobile. “A horse is as close to a human gate as you can get, giving the kids a chance to feel this natural movement,” says Kim Wheatley, physical therapist and founder of Upside Therapeutic Riding. > facebook.com/UpsideTherapeuticRiding

POISON CONTROL Poison ivy can be found in more places than just the woods: Firewood, dogs, and shoestrings that have been in contact with this devious plant can pass on the rashcausing poison, says local family care physician Dr. Eric Hilgeford. If you are exposed to poison ivy, wash the area with soap and water within 30 minutes to avoid breaking out. LEVITATING LOTIONS If water is the first ingredient in your lotion, money could actually be evaporating from your hands. Dr. Sunita Crittenden, a dermatologist at Brownsboro Dermatology, says, “The more water in lotion, the more likely it will evaporate rather than absorb into the skin.” Dr. Crittenden recommends petroleum-based ointments or creams containing dimethicone.

The Weight Loss Ratio “The best way to lose and maintain a healthy weight,” says Marsha Hilgeford, a cardiac rehab dietitian at Baptist Hospital, “is to distribute calories as 25 percent at breakfast, 50 percent midday and snack, and 25 percent for evening.” Just remember the combination, 25-50-25.

That’s No Bologna! Nitrates in cured meats such as hotdogs and bologna have been linked to headaches. If you suffer from headaches, you might want to pass on the hot dog at Slugger Field. Source: Marsha Hilgeford, cardiac rehab dietitian at Baptist Hospital

In Lighter News... Those with light-colored eyes are at higher risk of UV damage. According to Dr. Farah Ikram, an ophthalmologist at Children’s Eye Specialists, more UV rays are allowed to pass through eyes with light pigmentation. Be sure to always pack sunglasses and a hat if spending a day in the sun.

I met up with Betsy Wells in one of B. You’s Silque classes. Just like all their classes, working with Silques is a full body workout, focusing on exercises that work the core and upper body. B. You Silque classes are unique — they were developed by owners Stephanie Bristow and Rashna Carmicle. Silque classes incorporate poses that are adapted from yoga, Pilates, TRX, and Barre disciplines. In this photo, Stephanie and Betsy work on a hip flexor pose in Silque class. For this pose, core muscles are engaged, along with the use of some upper body strength. Small movements create powerful results at B. You Fitness in both their Silque and Barre classes. With the resistances of one’s own body weight, you can shape, tone, and sculpt your body with powerful poses and cardio exercises. For more information about B. You Fitness, visit byoufitness.com. Feel the Horse-spiration Pay attention to details such as this tough-looking necklace from Dot Fox. Note the two-toned shoes (one side, white, and the other side, black), which mimics the skirt, which is blue in front and orange in back. Her eyeshadow has leopard spots! For hair, be creative. This messy updo works perfectly for this statement fascinator.

Sometimes, it’s great to match perfectly, like this dress, jewelry, and hat.

Her Derby Connection Sheila Nobles was in the corporate world, but she decided to follow a dream that made her a local milliner. Along with designer Kevin Swansey, she runs C.K. Nobles Millinery Design. The first hat they created together was showcased at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Sheila feels a great connection to the tradition of the Kentucky Derby with family who worked at Churchill Downs and with

fond memories of visiting her grandmother’s home near the track on Derby weekend. Sheila recalls many memories with her sisters sitting on the front porch watching women in their dresses with classy hats. “They were so sophisticated,” she says. Within the last few months, C.K Nobles has worked with an investor who is interested in taking the duo’s designs worldwide with a couture and bridal line.

Sarah is not only a mother of four, but she’s also the director of the Julep Ball for the University of Louisville, which plans one of the biggest fundraiser events for the Kentucky Derby each year. Sarah got started with her involvement in the Junior League of Louisville. “I am a big Junior League girl,” she says. “I started out with my volunteer work and got involved with the Susan G. It’s a true fundraiser, and that’s really what it is all about.” While she’s busy getting everything together — food, lighting, a celebrity appearance, audio, sponsors, and much more — Sarah is also preparing her outfit. “I love color!” she says. “I really want to find something unique that no one else in the city is wearing. I scour websites for months!” After all of Sarah’s hard work, she says it’s nice to be able to wear a dream dress and look her best. Aside from family and full-time work duties, Sarah keeps her center by doing hot yoga. “I like to exercise. [Hot yoga] is my sanity between four kids and the Julep Ball. It’s so good for my head and my body.”

I like big and I like showy — things that make a statement.” HAT OR FASCINATOR? “I think I’m more of a fascinator girl now.”
