Age into Acceptance

W

By Tiffany White, Editor

henever I turn on the TV or flip through the pages of most magazines, I am reminded of the value our society places on youth.

Every day you see scores of ads promoting products promising to either make you look 10 years younger or reverse hair loss. It is as if the effects of aging are considered a scourge we should avoid at all costs. And the ads work. Some people fear aging associating it with loss of energy, beauty, health, visibility, and power. I have been guilty of saying, “I don’t want to get old,” but I do realize that getting older is only another phase of life. Besides, none of us can stop the aging process, but there are several ways you can improve the quality of your life as you age. Acceptance is the first step and no one best exemplifies this more than the four retirees we interviewed for our Defy Your Age feature (pg. 6). I am impressed with the way they are living their lives, because they haven’t let the inevitability of aging stop them from embracing the pleasures of life.

SNEAK Peek What you’ll find in the winter issue, on stands December 16:

Helpful Deeds

Here’s what they had to say about the benefits of getting older:

Make yourself or a loved one feel better fast.

“You really look at what’s important in your life…as you get older, you realize that you don’t have an eternity to live anymore so you concentrate on what matters the most such as your family, significant other, and your health. You are kind of getting away from the material things and thinking more about the more meaningful things in life.” —Ruth Schneider

Managing Your Meds

“I don’t miss working in the everyday stress of the hospital environment. I like being able to enjoy spending time with family and friends, volunteering at Norton Kosair Children’s Hospital, and not feeling rushed.”—Dianne Allison

Ways of keeping track of your meds.

Eliminating Debt Different methods for paying it off.

“I am at peace with myself. I can relax, do what I want to do and enjoy life. I don’t have anyone to answer to so if I want to sleep late on the weekends, I can. It is just a nice time.”— Jill Dawson

Cooking Wisely Substitute good ingredients for bad ones.

“As you get older, hopefully you learn more as you age and you learn to adjust to life and hopefully you learn more so that you feel like you are a little bit smarter to deal with the things that are thrown at you.”—Nick Morris

Ruth Schneider

Age 62 • Zumba Gold instructor

Describe your job I am a retired speech pathologist and still work part-time with preschool children, but I also teach Zumba Gold at Norton Commons and Baptist East/ Milestone Wellness Center part-time. Zumba is a workout that mixes Latin dancing with aerobics. How did you get into teaching Zumba? I worked out with Zumba for a long time. I brought a friend to class, and she said it was too hard for her. She wanted me to come up with a type for baby boomers. I did some research online and found Zumba Gold, which is less intense. It’s still a good workout, though. I later became certified for Zumba Gold. I have all ages in my class (Monday and Wednesday from 6-7p.m. at Norton Commons). It has been quite challenging, but I am an advocate of change. Why did you return to work after retirement? I like working, and I think it stimulates your mind. I like having a place to go early in the morning and doing what I need to do. I don’t want to become stagnant in life. I really believe the older you get, that if you don’t exercise it’s hard to just start. It’s better to start when you’re young. How do you maintain your health? I take vitamins. In addition to Zumba, I lift weights twice a week and do resistance training because as women age, they lose muscle tone. I also dance, work in my garden and walk. I don’t have a skin care regimen. I use good products to wash my face at night. I think it’s more about the consistency of doing it than the name of the product. I think using SPF to protect your skin is very important. As far as diet goes, I watch what I eat, and my sister influenced me to eat low-salt and low-sugar foods. What social activities are you involved in? I go to different dance clubs. I love to go to musicals, the theater, and movies. I love to be with my friends. How do you stay emotionally or spiritually well? I pray occasionally. Reading is a calming thing for me. I just chill out at home to wind down. I have a lot of energy. I believe your attitude toward life and how you maintain your self-image affects what you will look like as you age.

Jill Dawson

Age 70 • Senior at Eastern Kentucky University

8

What are you studying? General Studies and Arts & Science. I will graduate in May 2011. It keeps me busy and my mind occupied. I am just a regular student…I don’t feel like an outsider or an oddball in class.” How do you maintain your health? I exercise, take vitamins, and try to stay rested. I do Yoga and Pilates on the weekends and the treadmill during the week. I don’t have a specific diet, but I do watch what I eat. I use lotion and moisturizer, and never go to sleep with my makeup on. What social activities are you involved in? It’s such a small town. I moved here from Louisville to take care of my father. I go to church and the movies. How do you stay emotionally or spiritually well? I pray. I like to have a glass of Chardonnay and watch a movie at home. I like movies based on true stories. I don’t like comedies much. I like dramas. F A L L

Nick Morris

Age 60 • Highland Congress Guild Board member

Describe your involvement in local art events/venues. I am on the board of the Highland Congress Guild. We make sure the Highlands is a good place to live and work. I am also involved in the Cherokee Triangle Association. We basically address neighborhood issues and try to maintain the area and its significance. I am a member of the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, Louisville Historical League, and the Speed Museum. How do you maintain your physical health? I have been a member of the YMCA for more than 30 years, but during the summer I primarily run outside. I try to get out at least three days a week. I also participate in five or six 5K races throughout the year. I maintain my yard. Running is the single best exercise. It’s simple and you basically just need a pair of running shoes and 30 minutes to do it. You do have to watch your diet as you get older, so I think you have to gravitate towards good foods. That doesn’t mean I don’t get into junk foods occasionally though. What social activities are you involved in? I like to partake in local activities, the restaurant scene, networking events, art events, the museums usually have something every month. I like the Trolley Hop, playing guitar, and I am interested in photography. I also like outdoor activities like hiking and canoeing. I have an interest in historic homes. I enjoy working on mine. How do you stay emotionally or spiritually well? I am Catholic. I have a certain amount of faith that gets me through the tough spots in life. I think I have an overall positive attitude toward life. There are always new things on the horizon.

Dianne Allison

Age 62 • Retired Registered Nurse, Volunteer at Kosair Children’s Hospital

How do you maintain your physical health? I try to eat fruits and vegetables. I stay away from sweets, trans fats, and saturated fats. I try to walk, but when the weather isn’t great, I’ll go to the gym and do the treadmill or walk on the track. I do water aerobics. I take B Complex and Vitamin C in the winter time. I don’t wear a lot of makeup. I use cleansing creams and moisturizers. What social activities are you involved in? A couple of times a week I go out to eat with friends. I enjoy traveling, going to the Kentucky Center for the Arts for plays and the Brown and the Palace for shows. How do you stay emotionally or spiritually well? I attend church. Mass a couple of times a week. I meditate. I think getting out and walking really helps. I try to walk about 45 minutes around the Douglas Loop or the Cherokee Triangle area. 10

Invest in Healthcare “My wife has several ongoing medical conditions, so I would put the money away in case of an emergency if I needed medicine or medical treatment for her. “I have lived on a fixed income for several years,” Farish says, “and extra cash helps me feel more secure. “My primary goal is to ensure I can care for my wife in any circumstance, and knowing I have cash adds to my confidence that I could do that.” — Donald Farish

ne hundred dollars can be spent many different ways depending on what year it is and the state of the economy. In 1910, $100 bought you 5,000 two-cent candy bars, but in 2010, $100 buys you only 100 vending machine candies. Personal business and familial concerns can affect how much an individual values $100, and broader concerns like the economic slump can also influence peoples’ decision to risk or reserve such money. See how seven people from seven different professions and backgrounds responded to the question of what to do with $100. Then hear from wealth advisor and financial analyst Benjamin Hoehler about how $100 can mean more than $100 depending on what you do with it. continued on page 14

Hit the Town If given $100, accounts payable supervisor Dori Eisenback’s first thought is to go out for an evening for dinner and a movie. Eisenback says that living on a budget sometimes makes it difficult to find money to splurge on one evening. “Entertainment money is hard to squeeze out anymore.” — Dori Eisenback Age: 57 • Occupation: Accounts payable supervisor

Build a Cash Reserve “First I would give some to the church because that’s where it comes from anyway,” Bill Northcut says. “Then I would put the rest in a personal lock box.” He wouldn’t necessarily put the money in the bank because cash right now is as valuable as anything. “There are too many uncertainties and falsehoods surrounding the banking system and stock market right now,” he says, “so it’s safest to keep some cash in reserve.” — Bill Northcut Age: 58 • Occupation: Commercial real estate, brokerage, and property management

Spread the Wealth “I would put $20 toward gas in my husband’s car, $20 toward gas in mine, and the rest toward car repairs for a young man in our church who I love as my own.” Jerry Schreiner says that while gas prices continue to rise, it is a necessary expense to grow her business and allow her children and grandchildren the opportunity to participate in events and establish friendships. “Money’s not that important to me,” Schreiner says. “We just want enough to be able to live and be able to give.” — Jerry Schreiner Age: 65 • Occupation: Professional cleaner

Fill the Fridge “I’d go to Kroger!” Beverly Blake says. Blake believes money should be used for life’s necessities first and foremost. “I’m a practical person,” Blake says. “Food is what you need. From the Expert — Benjamin L. Hoehler, CRPC, is a wealth advisor at Stock Yards Trust Company and is also a Chartered Financial Analyst candidate. “Decades ago, $100 was virtually too small to invest,” Hoehler says. Growth investments used to focus on buying stock in individual companies, and so a $100 investment would leave you with minimal shares (after paying a commission) and a complete lack of diversification. Today, however, $100 could be the start of an investment in a mutual fund, Hoehler says. Mutual funds allow individuals to have a share in dozens or even hundreds of companies based on a single investment in the fund. “With mutual funds, the effect of one company doing poorly is much less,” Hoehler says. In other words, if you had fifty shares in a single company, that single company’s failure would lose you your whole investment. But if you have a single share in fifty different companies, one company doing poorly will not put nearly the same dent in your investment. Mutual funds have managers who have objectives guiding what type of stocks to buy so that you do not have to research each company. Even choosing a mutual fund is made approachable by the existence of brokers. Hoehler says, “Brokers are in every city and should be easy to find.” According to Hoehler, brokers make recommendations on where to invest based on the investor’s goals and personality. If you want more control over your investments, you can also buy shares on your own through companies like E-Trade, Vanguard, and Fidelity.

And what Hoehler would do with $100 if he weren’t wearing his wealth advisor hat? Invest in his golf game.

Chump Change “I can remember when $100 used to mean something,” says Michael Hall, longtime bank employee. “But now it wouldn’t get you very much.” Hall says that his $100 would go in his wallet and save him a trip to the teller for the next couple weeks. He says it would best go toward lunch, Cokes throughout the day, and occasionally dinner on the way home.” — Michael Hall Age: 60 • Occupation: Collateral servicer, commercial banking

Straight to the Bank “It’ll be spent eventually, no doubt about that,” James Kiggins says with a laugh. “I would just keep it back for a while.” While $100 wouldn’t help him much at the moment, he would value having the cash for unpredictable expenses. Even though he currently works part-time, Kiggins keeps the future in mind with every intake of cash. “I would keep it in case of an emergency to pay bills if I get behind.” — James Kiggins Age: 70 • Occupation: Retired post office letter carrier w w w . t o d a y s t r a n s i t i o n s . c o m

Adventures in

Snowbirding By Cheryl Stuck

A

s the days get cooler and shorter, some local residents — snowbirds — head south for the winter to enjoy the moderate weather, sand, and surf.

Barbara Aubrey and her long-time friend and dance partner, Jay Bradshaw, bought a condo in St. Petersburg, Fla., about five years ago. “I love being there in February when it’s 75 degrees at nine in the morning and you can go outside and have coffee,” Barbara said. They spend about six months in Florida and six months in her Louisville home. Typically they leave in October, but this year, Barbara said she’ll wait until after the election, since her daughter, Vicki Aubrey Welch, is running for 13th district Metro Council. Lyda Downs and her husband, Walter, have been wintering in North Hutchinson Island, Fla., for the past 13 years. It all started because they wanted to spend more time with their daughter who lives in Fort Lauderdale. They began by renting, but one day they were walking along a beach and looked up at a beautiful condominium building and haven’t looked back. Lyda said, “We spent the rest of the winter at the Hibiscus by the Sea and fell in love with it, and we’ve loved every minute of it.” They spend three to seven months in their Florida home, depending on activities going on in Louisville. Tips from Seasoned Snowbirds Prepare Wisely Preparation is key to peace of mind when you’re spending months at a time away from home. But also 16

knowing the ropes in the southern city is essential. Laws and ordinances vary. “I did not know that everything had to be inspected and required permits down there,” Barbara said. She learned the hard way after purchasing a couch that wouldn’t fit through the door of her condominium. She had to store it at a friend’s for several months while she hired a contractor to enlarge the door and renovate. She didn’t know that he had to be licensed and since he wasn’t, she had to pay extra fees. “I thought I was getting a good deal because he gave me one price and did all the work himself, but they said, ‘No, you need a carpenter, an engineer, an architect, a plumber, and electrician’ — nobody told me all that.” Pack Light “I read in a magazine to lay everything out on the bed that you’re going to take and put half of it back,” Lyda said. So now she takes only what’s absolutely necessary. “We do have a washer and a dryer [in the Florida condo], and we still pack too many things. You only need three different dressy things for Sunday church. “We don’t take anything for the kitchen because it’s all supplied. But on the way in, we stop and get milk, bread, and bananas. We leave the cereal in the microwave to keep the bugs out and it stays fresher. If it gets stale, we just throw it out. It’s not a big deal.” On the other hand, Barbara and Jay take nothing — not even a toothbrush. “We shut the door and lock it, go to the airport and catch a plane,” Barbara said. But she does take two empty suitcases. “I buy clothes down continued on page 18

f your grandchildren are part of an interfaith family, understanding how to maintain a healthy relationship with them and their parents is vital. Here are a few helpful guidelines to follow. Times have changed. Society is mobile, sexual equality is the norm, and religious freedoms abound. Welldefined roles shared by past generations have been displaced by modern sensibilities. Grandparents of today are pioneers defining what it means to be “Grand” in the 21st century. As liberating as all the modern changes are, some alterations may still be a “tight fit.” Religious freedoms and a mobile society have merged to create new family constellations. In the past, interfaith families were virtually unheard of. But now, almost every extended family in the United States has a member in an interfaith relationship. Even if we pride ourselves on our open-mindedness, many of us would still prefer for our children to marry someone “like us.” If children

w w w . t o d a y s t r a n s i t i o n s . c o m

By Nadyne Lee

marry outside the faith, it can cause problems in family relations. On both sides of the aisle, the question “How are you going to raise your children?” is usually asked. The answer to that question is bound to disappoint one set of future grandparents. Being Outside the Fold Can Wrinkle Relationships In the pre-Vatican II era, Catholics were forbidden to marry outside the fold. In the past, it was common for Jewish families to sit shiva (a period of mourning after the funeral of a loved one) if a child married outside the faith. While interfaith marriages happened, they were rare. In 1960, only about 5 percent of Jews intermarried. Current statistics show that there are now more than a half million Jewish/Christian couples in the United

F A L L

2 0 1 0

19

States. Of the roughly two million children under the age of 18 from these mixed marriages, just one-quarter are being raised as Jewish. A recent survey indicated that some American Jews view intermarriage rather than antiSemitism as the greatest threat to Jewish life in the U.S. When interfaith marriages happen in our families, religion is often a delicate subject that should be discussed with a healthy dose of diplomacy. Even discussing the topic can cause resentment in our children and confusion in our grandchildren. But in light of the present statistics and in consideration of the fact that we have the right to tell our grandchildren who we are, we can’t just adopt a “don’t rock the boat” attitude. But there is a way to navigate the waters without sinking the ship.

1 Stay Tight with the Gatekeepers There is one vital fact that every grandparent must remember. Parents control access to our grandchildren. If we alienate them, it is us who will suffer. They are the linchpin in this whole deal. It’s essential to maintain a good relationship with our grandchild’s parents. Great grand-parenting begins before birth by nurturing our relationship with our child and his or her spouse. In interfaith families, rocky relationships sometime proceed the birth of a baby. If that is the case, the pregnancy gives grandparents nine months to work toward reconciliation for the sake of family peace.

20

2 Play by the Rules: Know the rules that we cannot break. • Never talk to grandchildren in a negative way about their parents. • Never talk to grandchildren in a negative way about the religion of their parents. Conversations have a way of being repeated at home. • Don’t feed grandchildren forbidden foods. Just because Gramps has an award-winning recipe for barbecue pork doesn’t mean that your kosher daughterin-law will understand if her son comes home with pork stains on his new white shirt.

3 Nurture Mingled Roots

• Talk to your children about our desires to share our religious heritage • Get their permission • Play by their rules • Don’t proselytize — ever • Be sensitive to their feelings • Back off if we sense resistance • Keep holidays focused on celebration, not confrontation • Learn and understand as much as we can about their approach to raising their children • Some grandparents offer a written outline of what they plan projected over the course of several years as

t o d a y ’ s

t R a N s I t I o N s

activities become age appropriate. • Sharing values they hold dear • Relating memories of the past • Visiting a synagogue, temple, or church • Going to hear a Jewish concert or to see beloved plays like The Christmas Carol • Visiting a Jewish museum in New York or Washington, D.C. • Taking an intergenerational trip to Israel or Rome • Don’t push the boundaries beyond the parent’s comfort level. Be True to Yourself While we must not forget that it is our children’s privilege, right, and responsibility to decide how they want to raise their children, that doesn’t mean that we must hide or compromise our own religious heritage and values. Our memories, traditions, and pride in our roots are part of who we are. We have a right to share that with our offspring. If children come home for the holidays, we should make it clear how we will be celebrating. If we visit them on their holidays, we should expect to live by their house rules, not ours. We can communicate values through the ritual objects that adorn our homes. All of these items tell our story. The Shabbat candle holders that survived the Holocaust, the rosary beads that were blessed by the pope, the family Bible written in German, all have a story to tell. If it is all right with our children, we can tell the stories hidden within our precious treasures. Religion is sometimes woven into great-grandma’s

w w w . t o d a y s t r a n s i t i o n s . c o m

recipes, favorite lullabies, family sagas, and customs from the “old country.” These may be part of our religious heritage and our grandchildren would be impoverished if we did not offer them as their inheritance. Lessons from Our Lives In Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, age is revered. It isn’t the newborn child that is the beginning of wisdom, but the grandparent. As it has been the sacred responsibility of our ancestors, so now it is our own task to pass our wisdom from generation to generation. We’ve lived a life full of lessons. Our job is to teach. One way to teach is to wear our own religious identity proudly. We can do this by BEING the best Christian, Jew, or Muslim we can be. Let’s teach our grandchildren that we pray with our hands and our feet. Visit the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, clean the environment...And do it — with them! If we really want to pass on our heritage, we’ll let our grandchildren read the Holy Scriptures as we write it with our lives. In other words, we have to be the person we want our grandchildren to become. There are few influences more powerful than the lives of those we love, respect, and admire. We must make sure that our own journey is one worth imitating. As we give selflessly to our grandchildren from the bountiful harvest of our ripened soul, we touch the future. That is the only way to be ready to leave this life when our time comes.

Even-Steven

The Syndrome By Connie Meyer

W

hen autumn’s first chill fills the air, I usually start thinking of school supplies and colorful sweaters that match the palette of the soon-to-be changing leaves. These thoughts are now interrupted by increasingly earlier displays for Christmas. I’ve barely digested the candy corn from Halloween before I find myself faced with holiday decorations in the mall. By next year I wouldn’t be surprised to find Christmas trees standing next to the clearance summer patio furniture at summer’s end. If I have to look at holiday decorations before Thanksgiving, I might as well go ahead and start my shopping. Since I am an early bird in most areas of my life, I have decided it’s never too early to start thinking about finding the perfect gifts for family and friends. After all,

Do You Have E-SS? 11. Feelings of extreme guilt when someone gives you a gift and. . . A. You feel you don’t deserve it B. You didn’t get them anything C. You think the gift they gave you is much better than what you gave them 22. A panic-like attack exhibited by shortness of breath brought on by an overwhelming fear that no matter what you give in return it will never be good enough, therefore you can never be “EvenSteven.” 33. Exhibits sudden stuttering/or watery eyes when trying to say thank you 4. 4 Secret yearnings or fantasies of being not only “Even-Steven”, but “Ahead-Fred” because your gift is so spectacular that you can finally relax and not worry about what they might give you 55. Keeping a secret stash of pre-wrapped, unisex gifts on hand just in case someone gives you a gift unexpectedly 66. This syndrome is found almost exclusively in the female. (The rare exception may be the single male. The married male rarely exhibits such symptoms because he has his wife to keep things “EvenSteven” for him.) 22

haven’t we been raised to believe that it is better to give? What does this obsession with giving say about our ability to receive? The answer should be obvious from the usual responses of, “Oh, no you shouldn’t have,” or “That’s just too much — I couldn’t.” Too often these responses are accompanied by looks of extreme discomfort, if not downright horror. So much emphasis is placed on giving during the holidays that we rarely think about the importance of receiving. Everyone knows how to be a gracious giver. Giving is good. It is unselfish and shows the world how generous and caring we are to those we love. Receiving can catch us off guard. Too often it makes us feel awkward and unworthy, especially if we didn’t give something in return or gave a gift we feel wasn’t good enough. I call this obsession with perfect gift giving the “Even-Steven Syndrome.” In case this popular dysfunction is featured on Dr. Oz or appears in a medical journal, I have decided to refer to it simply as E-SS. If you or someone you love exhibits three or more of these symptoms during the holidays, run, don’t walk to your nearest mental health professional. Curing E-SS, once diagnosed, takes a combination of intense therapy combined with behavior modification. Connie Meyer writes regularly for Today’s Transitions. You can reach Connie at cmeyer@todayspublications.com.

Cures for E-SS 11. When someone gives you a gift, take a deep breath and just say “thank you.” 22. Allow yourself to enjoy whatever gift is given in the spirit that it was intended. 3. During the holidays if someone gives you a gift 3 and you did not get them something, accept it with the love with which it was given. This is the hardest and most important tip for the true E-SS sufferer. The joy of your genuine acceptance is the greatest gift you can give in return. If you go out the very next day and buy them something in return, this is called regression! Since therapy is so expensive and time consuming when you have so much shopping to do, you might consider joining a support group instead. In fact, I’m thinking about forming one of my own. I just might call it REST (Reformed “Even-Steven” Takers). If you are interested in joining, please don’t call until after the holidays. I don’t want to have to worry about exchanging gifts with new members!

The Mystery of Irma Vep Actors Theatre of Louisville

“It’s simply a perfect comedy,” remarks ATL’s Artistic Director Marc Masterson. “It’s going to be hilariously inventive in the hands of ATL’s Associate Artistic Director Sean Daniels. Charles Ludlam was a brilliant, campy, fun writer, who invented the ‘Theatre of the Ridiculous,’” Masterson adds. Sean Daniels remarks about the play: “It’s ultimately, at its heart, a show about torturing two actors, and having them succeed charmingly in the end. You’ll see someone walk off stage right and come back on stage left in a completely different costume, without any idea of how we did it. We’re pulling off this heightened Victorian melodrama that has huge stakes, and death, and werewolves and vampires and mummies. It just happens to be performed by two people,” he adds. “And the designers will have to be just as athletic as our actors to build all the tricks. That’s the joy of it. How can we really seem to be pulling off the impossible.” WHEN: October 5-30 WHERE: Actors Theatre of Louisville TICKETS: Start at $20 CoNTaCT: In person at the box office or www.actorstheatre.org. PlaidTidings begins where Forever Plaid left off. Filled with Christmas standards that have been ‘Plaid-erized,’ the boys (Sparky, Jinx, Smudge, and Frankie —best known for their smashing harmonic renditions of the great nostalgic hits of the 1950s) are back on Earth. At first they aren’t sure why they’ve returned, as they’d died in a bus accident en route to a Beatles’ concert. But a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like the riotous 3-minute-and-11-second version of The Ed Sullivan Show — this time featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks, and the Vienna Boys Choir. (PlaidTidings was last presented at DDP in 1999.) WHEN: November 16-December 31 WHERE: Derby Dinner Playhouse TICKETS: $40. Includes buffet meal. he faces filling the picture frames of the American household have changed significantly. Rarely anymore do we see a Beaver Cleaver-style family portrait — Mom, Dad, and two children — lining the mantel of every household on the street. One household type on the rise is the multi-generational household: three generations living under one roof. Whether coming together out of economic necessity, health issues, loss in the family, or the mentality that it does indeed take a village to raise a child, these families are redefining how Americans make a household work. continued on page 28

Meet the Johnson/ Williams Family When Barbara Williams’ husband died eight years ago, she was left with the choice of staying in Florida in the sun and warmth or moving to Louisville to be near her children and grandchildren. For her the choice was easy. “I missed grandkids,” Williams says. “Family means everything to me.” Although physically and financially able to live on her own, Williams jokes that she saw her daughter Damita Johnson and son-in-law Stan’s “big house” and couldn’t resist filling the space. “I don’t like to live by myself. I’m a big coward,” she says with a laugh. The Johnsons, along with Williams’ fiscal contribution, transformed their carport into an addition to their house, complete with a full kitchen, bathroom, and separate entrance for Williams’ private use. “The way our house is set up is the key to our success,” Damita Johnson says. “It would not work without that room.” Williams having her own apartment within the same house has allowed the Johnson/Williams family to experience the benefits of having the two households

very close together but also having their own space. “With this arrangement, I can be independent and not be a burden to my daughter’s family,” Williams says. “But I can also help out with the kids and with other things around the house.” Johnson praises her mother for the amount of time and energy Williams has poured into her three grandchildren. “I probably would’ve been fired for the amount of time I would have had to take off work if not for her,” Johnson says. “I don’t think any of my kids could say anything negative about having their grandma living here.” Williams and the Johnsons talked about their expectations and boundaries before they made the final decision to have Williams move in. “It’s hard enough to live with your husband and kids,” Johnson says. “With another person, that changes the whole family dynamic.” Williams says she has no problem giving the Johnsons their space and living her own separate, albeit involved, life in her apartment. “I’m not a very social person. I’m content out in my room,” she says. “I wanted to be a help to my family. I didn’t come back here to sponge off my daughter. That’s not me.” continued on page 30

Meet the Martin/ Marshall Family Anne Martin and her daughter, Katie Marshall, have faced many losses over the past decade, including the death of Marshall’s father and grandparents and Martin’s own health struggles. But out of these hardships have come Marshall’s infant son, Logan, and a newfound respect and admiration between mother and daughter. Marshall moved out of her mother’s house at 17 years old, “because I was sick of living with my mom,” she says with a laugh. A few years later, Logan was born, and shortly after that, Martin was diagnosed with breast cancer and developed a severe staph infection that nearly took her life. “I had my two sons living with me at the time,” Martin says, “but when Katie realized how sick I was, she wanted to be there for me and me for her.” Mother and daughter have established their household so that “the law of the land is love,” as Martin phrases it. “You have to give everyone a chance to speak even if you don’t like what they’re saying,” Martin says, “and avoid judging them. “The truth is always much easier to handle,” Martin continues. “If you break a window, just tell me and we can deal with it.” Marshall says she would prefer her own space, and

30

her mother helps to respect her desire for independence and space by not coming to the second floor, where Marshall’s room is, unless invited. Martin and Marshall say that living together now is a time of transition for both of them. “Ideally Katie would have her own place and still see me regularly,” Martin says, “but with the economy the way it is, we may see more and more people going back to intergenerational dependency whether out of preference or not.” Martin says that because Marshall is an adult, she expects her to support herself, and while she continues to provide her daughter with emotional and mental support, she otherwise needs to stand on her own two feet. “Katie’s more mature than most women her age,” Martin says. “As a parent, you always want to protect your kids. But I had to learn to trust her and I saw what she was made of. And I really respect her choices.” Marshall echoes this mutual admiration for her mother. “Since I’ve had my son, I’ve developed the deepest respect for my mom,” Marshall says. “We still butt heads sometimes because I’m a mom now but she’s still my mom too. I’m truly indebted to her. As a first-time mom, I needed the help.” “We’re best friends now, but we had to grow into that,” Martin says. “Now we just focus on what the loving, lifeaffirming decision is and carry it out with each other.”

Professional Advice Marriage and Family Therapist Michelle Weaver suggests three major factors to consider when molding multiple generations into one household. We will see how two families put these ideas into practice each day.

Family Roles

Anne Martin moved in with her daughter, Katie Marshall, and her children. They try to maintain boundaries within the home so everyone has their space.

w w w . t o d a y s t r a n s i t i o n s . c o m

“In any family system, no matter the size, each person has a lot of different roles, Weaver says. These roles focus on who each person is in relation to the others in the household. For example, the husband in a nuclear family unit simultaneously plays the role of a husband to his wife, a father to his children, and even a master to his dog. Some may say, “ I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest.” continued on next page

Meet our “Care Package for the Caregiver” Contest Winner! Nominate someone for our Caregiver Contest by filling out the form on page 53.

Jackie Reed, this month’s winner, won a variety of prizes including two movie passes to the Baxter Avenue Theatres and a sightseeing cruise for two on the Belle of Louisville.

Jackie Reed w w w . t o d a y s t r a n s i t i o n s . c o m

Why She Won: Over the past 15 months, Jackie had been caring for her terminally ill husband up until his death recently, and she regularly assists with her mother’s health needs in addition to managing a day care full-time. “She keeps up with all of her mother’s doctor appointments. Never complaining, Jackie always says, ‘everything is in God’s hands.’ It takes a lot of strength and courage to do what she does.” —Harriet V. Lockhart, nominator F A L L

Don’t Give Me That! Why your grandmother doesn’t need (or want) another pair of cozy slippers for Christmas. By Brenda Reed

A

t age 72, my mom moved to Corydon from Coppell, Texas to live closer to me …… One thing I learned from my mom and the other women that live in her neighborhood are the gifts that seniors just don’t need. Think about it. How often have you lovingly bought a grandparent a nightgown, slippers, bathrobe, or themed knickknack for their kitchen? When I put away her things and I discovered my mom had five bathrobes (all brand new with the tags still on because she only wears 1 at a time), 10 nightgowns (all 100% silk full length…from my sister

who refuses to wear a cotton gown…and again brand new with the tags because she only wears 1 or 2 cotton ones she likes), slippers (well we could’ve opened a small shoe store with these gifts and again, she only wears 1 pair she loves). Let me say one thing about the cute knickknacks we buy the elderly: they are dust catchers and one only has a certain amount of shelf space. By the time you’re in your 70’s and 80’s you’ve probably bought all the things you really need. The other ladies in her “hood” attest to the same. They love the attention their families give them by thinking of them at Christmas, but how many bathrobes shall an 80 year old keep in her closet? When I questioned why she had so many bathrobes and gowns, my mom cautiously said, “Well, I guess people are always expecting you to go to the hospital, get sick or die, and they want you to be comfortable.” She and the other ladies told me a few things they do NOT need as gifts, but every year they smile and continued on page 63

Don’t Give Me That!

politely thank their families for all the warm fuzzy blankets, nightgowns, slippers, and bathrobes they get on their birthdays and at Christmas. Fonrose Wortham is a stylish gentleman, whether it’s in the care and upkeep of his home or the clothing he chooses to reflect who he is. He believes that there is a time and place for every style. “I just think too many things have become too casual. People may think that I am overdressed sometimes when I go places, but that’s how I was brought up,” he says. Personal Style

“I like to keep up with what’s popular. I like to be neat and coordinated. All my life in my occupation I’ve had to wear a suit and tie and that’s really what I feel the most comfortable in. However, on a typical day, if I am home, you’ll find me in a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. All year-round that’s what I wear in the house. If I am going out whether it’s to the theater, out to dinner or church, l try to spruce up a bit.”

How his style has changed over the years

“I used to be noted for bright clothing, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more conservative.”

Where he shops

“I like Von Maur. I worked for Sam Meyers for some time and when they had retail clothing, I loved their line. I like Brooks Brothers. I do some shopping at Dillard’s as well and I’ve also had luck in some consignment shops. You can buy some really good clothing at an extremely reduced price. You just have to be choosy and picky.”

Secrets to looking his best

“I love to do yard work, it keeps me feeling good. I am active in a men’s choir at church. The camaraderie of the group keeps me upbeat. I have lots of friends whom I enjoy. We travel together and sometimes we just get together for coffee. I am in a bridge group. We get together and play once a month.”

Attitude toward life

“Too many people take life too seriously. I can be serious if I need to be, but I like to have a good time. There’s nothing that happens to us in life that we can’t wade through. It may not be pleasant, but there’s always a silver lining. I try to be as positive, caring, and upbeat as possible.” 64
