SHE MADE A MOVE!
year ago, we were photographing strong, healthy women for our first Best Bodies issue. During our shoot styling, Today’s Woman Editor Tiffany White quietly asked the runners in the group how they got started. Do you use an app? What kind of shoes are the best for running? Whether she knew it or not, Tiffany was on the verge of making a big change in her life: She was contemplating a fitness switch. Like most of us, she had some barriers to consider. How was she going to find the time? How would she know how far to run or even the best way to run? And, what was she going to do with her hair after the humidity/sweat had taken its toll? I am thrilled to report that during this past year Tiffany has found a way to get past all
the barriers. She downloaded the Couch to 5K app, put on workout clothes, and hit the sidewalk. After a few months she finished a 5K race, then downloaded another app to train for a 10K. She changed her hairstyle to a lower maintenance one (more to come in future issues on ideas for that!). She realized running at the park before work is possible and that running after work relieves her stress. What Tiffany discovered is what all who exercise regularly know — that moving makes us feel so much better (even if we sometimes forget that when we are really tired). May you find a way to move that makes you feel it is worth the time, worth the trouble, and makes you stronger and healthier. Be inspired by the women in this issue! — Anita Oldham

ALISON CARDOZA
AGE 35 JOB Certified personal trainer and hip hop group exercise instructor at Baptist East Milestone Wellness Center FITNESS ATTRACTION One of the questions I am asked on a daily basis is, ‘Do you ever have a bad day?’ I feel healthy and energized because I exercise. I owe my attitude, mental and physical well being to exercise. HER PASSION I played every sport in elementary school. I even beat the boys in pull ups and track races! In high school, I danced at the Youth Performing Arts School. At the University of Louisville I was on the Ladybirds Dance team. I then went on to cheer for the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleading team after college. WORKOUT SPOT Milestone Wellness Center BEST WORKOUT Move to music! Whether it’s walking on a treadmill, or jamming in your living room, a good song can help pump you up! You are more likely to move faster and burn more calories! BIGGEST EXCUSE I try to make excuses for myself when it comes to sweets! I have a sweet tooth. I advise my clients to eat in moderation. No one is perfect. If you deprive yourself of something you really want, eventually you will eat twice as much. Makeup by Amber Schnobrich, Strandz Salon and Threadz Boutique

“MY BIGGEST EXCUSE USED TO BE TIME. I ELIMINATED MY EXCUSE BY WORKING OUT AT 5:30AM. THIS HAS GIVEN ME MORE ENERGY AND HELPS ME TO CREATE BALANCE IN MY EVERYDAY LIFE.”
SHEMAINE BRIDGES
AGE 46 JOB Elementary school teacher with Jefferson County Public Schools WORKOUT SPOT YMCA (Southern Indiana) and Savoy Fitness HER PASSION I truly became passionate about exercising and taking better care of myself about 15 years ago when my blood pressure spiked as a result of daily stress and genetics. MOTIVATION I think about the things I want to change, and I keep pushing myself to work toward making those changes. I try to focus on having a growth mindset and maintaining consistency. BEST WORKOUT The YMCA offers a Bodypump class. This class provides a barbell workout that helps me build strength and tone all major muscle groups. Doing squats with weights has benefited me the most. In addition, at Savoy Fitness I do boot camp (cardio) to help burn fat and increase my endurance. ALI EDELSTEIN
AGE 26 JOB Director of Social Responsibility at Kentucky Distillers’ Association WORKOUT SPOT Seneca Park, Cherokee Park, and Rudy Lane HER PASSION A few years ago I dated an Ironman and wanted to keep up. I learned I could run and bike distances I couldn’t believe, and I had fun doing it once I got over my fear of being unable. Now, running and biking introduces me to new people and new adventures around town. BIG WIN Running in the Kentucky Derby Mini Marathon. I ran three days a week at Seneca Park with Anna and cross-trained with her at CycleBar. We also tracked and shared our workouts on apps like MapMyRun to encourage each other and hold ourselves accountable.

AUGUST 2017 / TODAY’S WOMAN
AGE 26 JOB Memory Program Coordinator at Belmont Village WORKOUT SPOT LA Fitness in St. Matthews FITNESS ATTRACTION About a year ago I met my friend Ali Edelstein at a church group. We bumped into each other at Seneca Park. She was running, and I was walking my dog. I have never been a runner, and I hated the thought of it. I thought Ali was a super cool person and I wanted to become her friend, so when she invited me to jog with her in the mornings before work, I thought I’d give it a shot. Soon enough we were jogging regularly, and she had convinced me to register for the Derby Half Marathon. I went from zero to 13.1 in six months. BIG WIN Running the Derby Half Marathon was the hardest thing I have ever done physically. I have never been big into working out or running, so it was a huge deal that I finished the race in under 2hrs30min.

25 THINGS
GIRL POWER
So many of the women featured in this issue are mothers of daughters who are watching every move they make — and they are making moves that we hope these girls emulate in the future.
8
Do It Together Tori Heyman, 27, founder of Tori Heyman Fit Life, swears by efficient workouts she can do from the comfort of her own home. “I learned early on in motherhood that 30-minute home workouts are the only way I can stay consistent with my fitness journey,” she says. “I lost 60-plus pounds of pregnancy weight with a 25-minute-a-day program. I love that I can get a strong, fit body while showing my little one a healthy lifestyle.”
“My motivation to stay active comes from my daughter when I see how she responds when I’m involved with what she and her friends are doing.” p 26
9. For Patricia Bardin doing cartwheels together and playing is how she gets in her “gym” time.

That is a question Tammy Hubbard asks her daughters, ages 13 and 12. “For them, I want them to not be so concerned with what their body looks like, but I would rather have them focus on what they feel like and educating them on food choices and how they feel: do you feel strong?” p. 22

Exercise helps me manage anxiety and keep my health in check. I love a good challenge and exploring new ways to get my heart rate up. Plus, it’s fun as an aerialist. My workouts become a performance, and I love the spotlight! HER PASSION I grew up swimming and diving so I was always physically active. However, when one of my best friends Jordan introduced me to the circus, it took my fitness to the next level. AGE 49 JOB Owner of Phitnut, fitness and nutrition coach WORKOUT SPOT Home FITNESS ATTRACTION My dad died at age 52 of a heart attack while sleeping. BIG WIN Completing Core De Force program and eating plan with no cheats. HER PASSION I worked for GE Healthcare delivering software to different hospitals, and we were remote employees. For me it became very isolating, very sedentary and somewhat depressing. I have always had that fitness and nutrition passion and once I realized that there were a lot of people that wanted help, it became more evident that I needed to follow my passion. HER PHILOSOPHY For the clients I have, I will typically let them know that I am not perfect and don’t strive for perfection. I let them know it is a journey so I try not to say any food is off limits. But the choices they make have a consequence. Makeup: Denise Cardwell, Image Works Studio

NISHEA SIPLEY
AGE 37 JOB Healthy lifestyle coach and owner at HealthyFreedom4U.com WORKOUT SPOT Get Fit Personal Training, The Factory Gym, Northeast YMCA HER PASSION I have hypothyroidism and had several other ongoing health issues. I began using the healthy and wellness products that I now sell because these products dramatically transformed my life, inside and out. In July of 2014, I added step and pump classes to the nutritional changes I’d made, and it was another game changer. This helped me put on much needed muscle tone. Encouraged by a friend, I started training for my first fitness competition in March of 2016. BIG WIN I competed in the NPC Kentucky Muscle Derby Championship Fitness Competition. I placed 5th in Women’s Bikini - Masters Over age 35 and 4th in Open over 5’7. MOTIVATION The best way to keep up your daily motivation is to have a deadline attached to your goal. Without a deadline, it is easy to get off track here and there and then it becomes a slippery slope to being completely off track altogether. SHALITA FORD
AGE 29 JOB Pharmacy Supervisor at RxCrossroads Specialty Solutions WORKOUT SPOT I workout at home or in the neighborhood. FITNESS ATTRACTION I started working out to improve my self-image. Once I got into a routine, I was amazed at the increase in energy and overall well-being. HER EPIPHANY I have not always been fit. As a child, I was on steroid therapy for my asthma. That weight stuck with me throughout my teenage years into my 20’s. I put my foot down when I met my all-time favorite celebrity Nelly back in 2014. I saw the pictures that were taken by my friend in the audience. It was an eye-opening experience that made me feel every bit of 230 pounds. BIG WIN Keeping a routine has always been a challenge for me. For the last three months, I have dedicated at least 30 minutes to working out every day. MOTIVATION I have to remember where I came from and strive to keep on track. I worked hard to get this far and I will not quit now. Makeup: Amber Schnobrich, Strandz Salon and Threadz Boutique

SARAH CLINTON
AGE 34 JOB Strength and Conditioning Coach at Spalding University WORKOUT SPOT At work. FITNESS ATTRACTION I workout to be a strong woman inside and out. HER PASSION I’ve always been involved in sports but became very passionate about lifting after graduating from Purdue in exercise science. BIG WIN I deadlifted 210 pounds, while I was 26 weeks pregnant with my daughter who is now 8 months old and squatted 155 pounds. MOTIVATION I have to stay fit for my athletes. I have to set the good example and push myself the way I ask them to push themselves. BEST WORKOUT Do whatever you enjoy and make it hard/challenging. If it’s not hard, you won’t see progress; if it’s not fun, you won’t do it. Makeup: Denise Cardwell, Image Works Studio
PATRICIA’S ADVICE 4 Turn on YouTube workouts Why? No need to put on a proper gym outfit, nor drive anywhere, plus it’s free and effective! (Favorites: Winsor Pilates Buns & Thighs and 20 Min Abs, also Tracy Anderson Iron Man workout and Arms). 4 Sit up straight in chairs and flex your abs anytime you think of it (especially while driving). Think about your stomach muscles even when you’re walking (also while running, in workout class, etc). Our bodies conform to how we most use and pose them daily. It’s silly to think anyone can expect their stomach muscles to pull in simply because they take an abs class once in awhile.
PATRICIA BARDIN
AGE 31 JOB Integrated Marketing Consultant WORKOUT SPOT In her neighborhood and occasionally at the YMCA HER PASSION Recently I realized that running has been my one constant anywhere I’ve lived. Years ago I’d run a 10-mile route around Philadelphia when I lived there in college. When my daughter was an infant we moved to Washington [state] for my husband’s job, there I’d run by the river while pushing the stroller and do arm workouts with her. POWER FOOD Here’s what I tell people when I’m in a grocery store and someone kindly says ‘you look so great, what do you eat?,’ I say, ‘fiber.’ Make sure as much as possible that what you’re eating [naturally] has fiber in it. NANCY MILLARD ERWIN
AGE 65 JOB ESL teacher at Lincoln Elementary Performing Arts School WORKOUT SPOT Milestone Fitness Center, home, Vail Ski Resort, Vail Racquet Club HER PASSION I have always exercised. My mother and father had us ride horses, play tennis and snow ski as a family. My father worked out at the YMCA instead of going to lunch and was a founder and owner of the Downtown Athletic Club. BIG WIN My greatest fitness accomplishments have been bicycling the Triple Bypass, 120 miles over three mountain passes in one day in Colorado and skiing a pro am slalom race with 5-foot jumps on the course. MOTIVATION I am Buddhist. I vigorously chant “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” daily. The chanting energetically drives me. Also, pain motivates me. I have significant scoliosis, resulting in regular daily back pain. Motion is lotion. My pain is alleviated through movement. BEST WORKOUT Taking care of my back is my main focus and yoga is, by far, the best thing I can do for that. USING MEAN WORDS TO SPUR POSITIVITY By Bella Portaro Kueber
“
There is a silent belief on what an NFL wife should look like, and I don’t fall into that category,” says Jessica “Jess” Powell, who is married to Bilal Powell, running back for the New York Jets. She has been under the bullying scrutiny of her husband’s fans. After becoming a mother, the weight was harder to lose. “I didn’t think much of it until I saw what his fans were tweeting about me, and it broke my heart. It got so bad that I asked Bilal to stop tweeting about me altogether because I didn’t want to see the cruel words they said about the way I looked.” Pushing through the wounds that the cruel words inflicted upon Jessi’s heart and mind
fueled her to make a change. She started training and eating healthier foods and began sharing her journey with her friends on Facebook. Now she has turned it into her passion and a business venture that she never thought she’d have — Jess Fit, located on Preston Highway, which provides fitness training to women. “I want to be a voice to help women raise their self-esteem in a world that can tear it down,” Jessi says. “I think using their words to fuel my life with positivity is one of the greatest things I’ve learned about grace through my faith, and I’m really excited to have the chance to share my journey with women and help them overcome similar body image issues that I have.”
“I used to only care about how I looked,” explains Margaret Mathy — “but now I care about my speed, form, strength, and my overall health. I just think about how grateful I am to be able to even do it.” She credits her training at 413 Fitness where she leads classes with her change. Photo Melissa Donald
Advice for those who avoid the gym:
1. Make it a priority. “Even 30 minutes a day is better than nothing. Get out of bed earlier or cut back on social media. Make it work.” 2. Build a support system. “Find fitness-based role models and emulate their workouts. Keep close to the people that will push you.” 3. Mix it up. “Switching up your routine and activities keeps you from hitting a plateau.”

The Fight Against Obesity By Ashli Findley
N
ancy Bailey is a wife and mother of two teenagers. She runs her own company: Bailey Safety, a consulting and training firm for construction companies. She is also an avid lover of the outdoors. All the while, Nancy struggles with obesity. “It is exhausting,” she says. “Trying. Painful.” After the birth of her second child Hayden, who is now 16, Nancy saw herself become less active and less motivated. That was the beginning of her battle. She admits that she copes with her emotions by eating, and as her business has grown, she has gotten off-track with weight loss. Yet, if there’s one thing Nancy has learned while struggling with her weight, it’s that her support system is crucial for her success. For years, Nancy has participated in the Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon. She credits her walking partner Ayron Corbitt — the two walk for about an hour, three to four times per week. Two years ago, Nancy tried human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) shots to reduce hunger and weight in certain areas. Nancy lost 46 pounds after three rounds of the shots. However, she didn’t complete the final phase. Coupled with life’s happenings, the weight slowly came back on. It’s a fight that continues. SEARCH: Nancy Bailey

I played a number of sports through high school, and I continued to exercise once I went to college. I know that if I want to remain fit, I have to put in the work. BIG WIN In April 2016, I competed in the Kentucky Derby Fitness competition. It was my first time competing, and I won both of my classes in the bikini division. I prepared for 12 weeks, following a very strict workout program and diet. BIGGEST EXCUSE My biggest excuse is time. It’s something I also hear a lot from clients. ridgette Lipman and James Morris married in October of last year at 6:30 in the evening in a ceremony and reception at Hurstbourne Country Club with around 150 guests. The two years of planning showed up in details that made the couple’s ceremony extra special. “A lot of people assume that having something custom made means spending more money on it,” Bridgette says. “James and I both love when something has a special story behind it and when there is an actual person you get to work with. Our custom-made items usually came in under or right at the same price as a similar item from a store.” They even had painter Helen Merrick document the ceremony.

They wanted somewhere with a lot of history and charm, and they had pews brought in for ceremony seating. “The pews fit the site so well, and gave the outdoors a more magical and formal feel.”
“The day before the wedding Oberer’s actually called and said they wanted to show me some of the flowers before they finished them. The coordinator wanted to make some creative suggestions. I really appreciated her reaching out to say, ‘Hey, these look great, but I think we can do better.’”
“My dad drove me about 200 yards from the country club to the green where we were married. All of the noise and the hustle and bustle of the day ceased. It was like watching the moment as an outsider, and I was able to take in just how perfect everything was.” TODAY’S WOMAN / AUGUST 2017

I Found My Beach!
Hilton Head is the perfect quiet beach getaway for rekindling family bonds.
By Megan Seckman
A
t last, I think I’ve found my beach. Hilton Head has satisfied all my family’s yearnings: it’s close enough to drive without everyone killing each other in transit; the pristine beach is expansive enough that you don’t feel like one in a herd of colorful, greased seals vying for your square of sand. Typically, we are campers and plan adventurous trips in the great outdoors. But since the opening of my husband’s business, his only request was “something easy. I just want to sit.” So, I scoured the internet for an affordable resort and found The Hilton Omni for around $120 per night. The beachfront hotel included three pools, firepits, restaurants, a spa, and more. Our tree-hugging needs were met, however, because the whole island is filled with palm trees and live oaks and covered in bike paths. SEARCH: Megan Seckman
The highlight of our dining was at the Skull Creek Boathouse, a seaside compound complete with marina and pelicans. We waited two hours for our table (and I never wait two hours for anything), but I have to say it was worth it.
TRY THIS SUMMER SALAD
Cucumber, Radish, and Fennel Salad Serves: 4
Ingredients 1 fennel bulb, reserve the green tops for garnish 8 ounces radishes, trimmed 1/2 English Cucumber 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup fresh mandarin juice 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 garlic clove, minced 1 tsp sea salt freshly ground black pepper to taste
Story & Photo Paige Rhodes
I
f you’re a true Southerner, your summers were probably spent snacking on vegetables from the garden. This surely included cucumbers that were soaked in white vinegar, sugar, and water. This Cucumber, Radish, and Fennel Salad with Mandarin Dressing is a modern homage to that beloved snack. This salad is even better on day two after the vinaigrette has time to soak into the veggies, but they still retain their addicting crunch.
34
Instructions Using a mandoline or sharp knife, thinly slice the white part of the fennel, radishes, and cucumber. Add the vegetables to a large bowl. In a small bowl, combine mandarin juice, red wine vinegar, garlic, salt, and pepper. Slowly stream in olive oil while whisking. Whisk vinaigrette until thoroughly combined. Drizzle the desired amount of dressing over the veggies. Chop the green tops of the fennel and use it to garnish your salad. Serve immediately or let it chill for a while to SEARCH: let the flavors meld. Paige Rhodes

If you are looking for a new exercise, take some notes from Today's Woman's exercise experiences in these 13 fitness centers around the city. Sore Factor: Although subjective per individual, our sore factor is listed on a scale from 1-10 with one being not sore at all and 10 being extreme soreness.
DOWNTOWN PILATES, NULU
ORANGETHEORY FITNESS, ST. MATTHEWS
Class: Private Session 1 hour session with co-owner Susan Bishop, who says “we epitomize whole life balance.” downtownpilateslouisvilleky.com
Class: Orange 60 1 hour fitness workout with instructor and head trainer Mike Wernert Orangetheoryfitness.com
Bring: nothing, even water is provided Cost: $18 for mat class drop-in, $40 for semi-private instruction drop-in, $70 for private instruction drop-in. It also offers package deals and other services. Sore Factor: 5 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Brigid Morrissey
What to Expect: It was cool and dim, and natural light shone through the storefront windows, spotlighting the Pilates exercise equipment. I didn’t even need shoes, so I slipped out of those. Comfort was an obvious emphasis the longer I was there, from the suggested attire (there was a wide range of movements, so the less exposed, the better) to the classical music playing softly in the background. My session involved a brief, yet informative history lesson about the founder of Pilates and evolution of the equipment, full-body exercises that both introduced me to the basics and allowed the instructor to evaluate my movements, and a 30-minute massage following the workout.
Bring: towel and water Cost: $99-$159/month Sore Factor: 6 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Tiffany White
What to Expect: Mike Wernert, head trainer at Orangetheory, gave me a thorough tour of the fitness room before class. Before class, that included 24 people with a majority of the participants being women. You must wear a heart monitor to keep track of your heart rate. Mike separates participants into two groups and has them rotate between using the treadmill, rower, and weight floor. While on the weight floor, our group did push ups and a series of upper body exercises using weights and TRX straps. Mike guided us through the exercises by showing us the proper form, but participants could also watch a demonstration video that correlated with each exercise.

Cost: $15 for 60+ minute mind.body. balance class Sore Factor: 0 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Brigid Morrissey
“A GREAT WAY TO LEARN BASIC DANCE MOVES. . .”
What to Expect: The class size was small — only three women were in attendance. I ventured out of my comfort zone, but the instructor, Justin Michael Hogan, assured me that the intro class was a great way to learn the basic dance movements and terminology. As some of the women stretched, I looked around the room. It was spacious and open, with a full-length mirror from wall to wall and a matching set of windows along the width of the side. I ditched my sneakers but opted to keep my socks on. The others had ballet shoes. I took my place on one of the moveable bars, and we set to work on a number of combinations, first as a slow demonstration, and then set to music, but always at a manageable pace.
SWEATY BUDDHA, WESTPORT ROAD Class: Bikram yoga 75-minutes. Bikram yoga is a therapeutic sequence that consists of two breathing exercises and 26 postures. AUGUST 2017 / TODAY’S WOMAN
What to Expect: I walked into a quiet space to a designated spot on the left side of the room. My instructor, Co-owner Wendii Brooks, informed
me that there is a 10-degree variance across the span of the mirrored room. Beginners go to the “cooler” side of the room — cool meaning 100 degrees. As the 20 or so students slowly trickled into the room (at least 15 minutes early, because the door gets locked and you’re out of luck! I learned from experience), I noticed that this class was full of people of all genders, ages, body types, and races. The key is to breathe, and fight the temptation to leave the room. Fight the heat, and ease yourself into the movements. Wendii makes a bolder claim: “Bikram Yoga can change your life, one class at a time. Nothing is set in stone, not pain, not disease, not inflexibility. We all have the capability to transform.”

BEST WORKOUT SPOTS AREA 502 MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, CAMP ZACHARY TAYLOR AREA Class: Women’s Boxing Cardio 1 hour with instructor and boxing trainer, Aaron Sheckles. area502mma.com Bring: Boxing gloves, hand wrap Cost: $10 per session Sore Factor: 1 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Tiffany White What to Expect: I discovered that boxing in the evening is the ideal way to let off some steam, and I had plenty of opportunities to do it in Area 502 Mixed Martial Arts boxing fitness class. I was in a class with three other members, but the class size often varies and can include up to 15 people. We began with a warm-up
session — rotating between jumping rope and jogging. After the warmup, Aaron wrapped my hands for the boxing session to protect wrists, knuckles, and thumbs from injury while boxing. First, I learned about the proper boxing stance and the correct way to throw a punch using a punching bag and the one-two punch technique. Aaron had our group go through several rounds of punching the bag using the one-two punching technique. Next, we stepped into the boxing ring and continued the punching drills with Aaron, but at a faster pace while moving around the ring. I enjoyed this part of the workout, because it gave me a chance to establish camaraderie with the other members in my class.
CLIMB NULU, NULU Class: Not really a class - more climbing on your own. Participants are free to climb for as long as they want. The route setter was Devon Gray Climbnulu.com Bring: Climb Nulu provides everything you need. Cost: $15 for a day pass for newcomers; $12 thereafter Sore Factor: 7 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Tiffany White What to Expect: This exercise tested my problem-solving skills and agility by climbing colorful, large, threedimensional walls covered with holds that are color-coded to differentiate the climbing route and numbered
based on their level of difficulty. The free-flowing atmosphere at Climb Nulu allows participants to move from one route to the next at their discretion. When I arrived, I was given a pair of climbing shoes and powdered chalk to help grip the holds while climbing. The challenging routes, which cover a range labeled as V4 through V16, are located in the main room. Be prepared for an intense upper body workout that requires an equal amount of strategy and strength. I attempted to try one of these routes, but had some difficulty maneuvering my way through it. After three attempts, I opted for a couple of the easier routes in the beginner’s room and felt my confidence soar when I was able to climb up and back down a route.

Class: Get Fit/Give Back Cardio Boot Camp Fitness workout for 45 mintues with instructor Austin Pegram edgebodybootcamp.com/louisvilleky
Bring: Don’t bring anything. CycleBar gives you a 32-ounce water bottle and a towel. Cost: $20 drop-in; $29 for 3 classes; $185, monthly unlimited Sore Factor: 2 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Tiffany White What to Expect: CycleBar is masterful with taking the edge off of a hard workout through the use of lighting and an upbeat music playlist. I registered for the connect ride — one of two types of rides CycleBar offers. When you register for your class online, you will see a layout of the cycling room, which shows the available bikes for your class. All of them are numbered, and you
38
must select the one you want to use. Most classes have around 40 participants. Prior to the workout, the cycling room is dimly lit, but when the workout begins, the room darkens, the music starts, and the sweat drips continuously. The fun part about these classes is that the bike rides are tied into a choreography centered around the music. Danielle guided the class through the ride while standing on a small platform lined with LED candles. The atmosphere is a nice blend of softness and hardness. You can adjust your position and the gears on your bike as directed by the instructor. For the last part of the workout, we did four types of arm exercises using a body bar while seated on the bike. After your workout, you can take a shower and use their powder room equipped with toiletries and shampoo from Dry Bar.

“I LEFT DRENCHED IN SWEAT, HAPPY AND TIRED, BUT ENERGIZED.”
What to Expect: Before even coming to a class, they want you to go through an orientation and get to know you. This takes about 30 minutes. Actual class: Thirty minutes of an intense workout. I went to the Cardio camp at 10:45am on Saturday, and it was free with a donation of a canned good. This is a co-ed class, and everyone was so supportive. We started off with a quick stretch and got our hearts pumping with a little group tug-of-war. Then, the instructor dove straight into the stations. There were seven stations, and there was only a quick water break in between sessions. The class was broken up into two sessions. Seven stations, one each for 30 seconds, a water break, then we jumped into the second session with seven new workouts using the same equipment. We did partner up on a few of these workouts. I left drenched in sweat, happy and tired, but energized.

RESULTS BY DESIGN FITNESS EAST END, LOUISVILLE Class Heart Rate Zone The 45-minute interval-style class using heart rate monitoring helps to individualize the group coaching setting. Instructor: Sarah Parks ResultsByDesignFitness.com Bring: water, heart rate monitor Cost: $167/month for the group coaching membership Sore Factor: 7 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Ashli Findley What to Expect: It’s a metabolic, interval-style class. Instead of using the traditional timed sets, participants move through exercises or rest based on their heart rate. There were about 13 people in my class, mostly younger and middle-age women. The culture was very family-oriented; everyone seemed to know each other by first name. It was also a lighthearted and encouraging atmosphere to work out in as small interaction and cheering were common between sets. The space itself was bright, airy, and open, as a wrap-around gym that includes a turf area along with strength training equipment.
Ashli Findley slams the ball during the Heart Rate Zone class.
MADE FITNESS, EAST END, LOUISVILLE Class Box N Burn The one-hour class has the cardio benefits of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) with the strength training benefits of a boot camp. The instructor: was Garrett Watson (He has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MADE is the official training outfitter of all LMPD recruits.) MadeLouisville.com Bring: boxing gloves and hand wraps Cost: $80/month or $20/drop-in rate Sore Factor: 9 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Ashli Findley
What to Expect: It’s a cardio kickboxing class infused with boot camp-style exercise. Participants use anything from boxing bags and battle ropes to spin bikes and running, cycling through exercises every 30 seconds. The gym has a martial arts element to it, so much of the equipment and exercises, like rotating punches and kicks on the boxing bags, are incorporated. There were about 10 people in my class, men and women of various ages and physical shape. The space itself reminds me of a warehouse converted into two areas: one side is for workouts and the other side is the self-defense and Brazilian J iu-Jitsu area.
THE TRAINING STUDIO, RIVER ROAD & ST MATTHEWS Class Muscle Endurance Class Getting your muscles to be able to work for a prolonged period of time with your heart rate will be elevated the entire hour. “A lot of things are form-specific,” says co-owner Dale Benedict “…We’re not gonna let you do things wrong.” TheTrainingStudio.com Bring: gym clothes Cost: upper intermediate to advanced gym-goers Sore Factor: 10 Fitness Level: any level Exerciser: Ashli Findley
What to Expect: I attended the Muscle Endurance class on a Wednesday at noon at the River Road location. The workout is filled with lots of repetitions using body weight and weighted equipment. Short, personal breaks provide the only relief, ensuring your heart rate stays up the entire time. There were nine people in my class, men and women mostly of middle age who looked to be in phenomenal shape. The River Road location is one large, open space with carpet, little machinery, and lots of equipment to aid you in using body weight or smaller weights for workouts.
BURN BOOT CAMP, LYNDON AREA Class Boot Camp One- hour Intense Boot Camp with six stations; four reps of each station with instructor Camryn Fields burnbootcamp.com/louisville-ky
What to Expect: The class I went to was at noon, and it was leg day. As I was the only first-timer in the class of 24, the trainer worked with me and taught me the right way to do a squat. I found this extremely uncomfortable at first, but by the end, it looked like I knew what I was doing. The class was divided into six groups, one for each station. At one station, we worked with an 8-15 pound free-weight and did squats; another station had resistance bands to strengthen your hamstrings; the third station had a medicine ball (8 or 13 pounds), and we worked core muscles while maintaining balance. High energy and motivation based.

AGE 43 JOB Teacher at Pleasant Grove Elementary WORKOUT SPOT 44 Crossfit FITNESS ATTRACTION I like how I feel when I exercise consistently. I want to be as strong and functional as I can at whatever age. BIG WIN Every year in crossfit, there’s a hero workout of the day we do on special occasions called Murph. It’s a special workout named after a fallen soldier, and for the past two years I’ve done it on Memorial Day at our gym. This year, I was able to complete the workout eight minutes faster than last year. MOTIVATION Crossfit workouts are varied and I never get bored or in a routine. I am also motivated because my coaches care and will call me out if I miss more than a few days!
ANN SIMMS (middle) AGE: 52 JOB Instructional Tutor at Pleasant Grove Elementary WORKOUT SPOT 44 Crossfit FITNESS ATTRACTION My main focus is to build strength in my arthritic spine and to control high blood pressure associated with Polycystic Kidney Disease. The bonus is realized in improvements in my overall fitness level related to strength and stamina. BIG WIN I competed in my first Crossfit Open in February 2017. It’s a 5-week competition with athletes across the country. The workout is judged at your gym and scores submitted weekly. I placed second of 34 women in my age group in the scaled division in Kentucky. MOTIVATION My motivation comes from the overall feeling that I’m taking charge of my health. I’m doing all I can to maintain a body that I’m depending on to get me through many more years. Sure, there are days when I’m just “not feeling it,” but I promise you that I’ve never left a workout wishing that I had stayed home.

HER PASSION I began competing in double-dutch jump roping, track n’ field, cross country, basketball, and archery. I currently use exercise as a means of therapy, social interaction and, most importantly, for health maintenance in my latter years. BIG WIN Early on in returning to “getting fit” I entered a local 5K. Whew… it was quite a task initially, but I was determined to see it through. To prepare myself I began by changing my diet, increasing water, fruits, vegetables while decreasing fried, junk, and fast foods. MOTIVATION I keep up my motivation by praying, learning my body as well as listening to my body. I need this in my daily life to be a better me. AGE 38 JOB Owner of Belle & Rose Natural Skin Care WORKOUT SPOT In my cluttered, toy-ridden basement. FITNESS ATTRACTION I want to take care of my body to allow me to do things I love such as hiking in the mountains with my husband and two daughters, running along with them as they ride their bikes, dancing all night to my favorite live music, or trying new things like paddle boarding. I also want to model a healthy lifestyle to my girls, and for them to grow up using words like healthy, fit, and strong to describe their bodies, rather than skinny, pretty, or fat. BIG WIN For a while my level of fitness would be in spurts, but for the past few years I have found what works for me and stuck to 30-minute workouts, four to five days a week, mixed in with lots of fun with the family. MOTIVATION I keep my workouts short and sweet. I tell myself, ‘It’s only 30 minutes.’ Sometimes I am dragging myself down those steps, but I’m always glad I did.
