FACEBOOK ROLLS OUT WATCH WORLDWIDE IN AUGUST 2017, Facebook launched Watch in the US, the video platform devoted entirely to original mid and long-form content. The social media network materialized its decision to face YouTube and even streaming services like Netflix, gathering its shows and original series -for which it will invest a billion dollars this year- in one place. And in August of this year, Facebook announced the international launch of Watch. The free on-demand service will be “available everywhere” immediately, said Fidji Simo, Head of Video at the social network. “With the global launch of Watch, we are supporting publishers and creators globally in two critical areas: helping them to make money from their videos on Facebook and better understand how their content is performing,” the company said in a statement. In its first year in business, Watch has premiered many original titles from partners like Univision, CNN, Fox, ABC, BuzzFeed, Tastemade, ATTN and Condé Nast. And among the projects currently in development, one of the most anticipated -and ambitious, with a budget of US$10 million- is a 13-episode reality show about Cristiano Ronaldo. OTT
Disney Won’t Compete Against Netflix in Numbers
Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company
DAYS AFTER the New York Times revealed details about Disney’s anticipated OTT platform, which will be launched in 2019, the company’s CEO, Bob Iger, shared his thoughts about it during Disney’s quarterly results presentation. The executive said The Walt Disney Company’s main plans are now in the OTT world. “The launch of our direct-to-consumer product in late 2019 is the biggest priority for the company for next year,” he said, adding they intend to “walk before we run” with this new app. “It takes time to build the type of content catalog we want to build,” he said. With these words, he explained the new platform won’t compete against Netflix in terms of volume, since they won’t need as many titles given the quality of the ones they already own. “Since the app will offer content from Pixar, Disney, Marvel, NatGeo, Lucasfilm and ‘Star Wars’, we believe volume won’t be anywhere near what Netflix offers. He also confirmed the platform will cost less than Netflix. The new streaming service will join the recently launched ESPN+, as well as Hulu, which Disney owns a majority stake in.

‘White Lines’ is the title of the new series that Spanish producer and screenwriter Álex Pina, responsible for hits like ‘Money Heist’ or ‘Locked Up’, is writing and developing with its production company Vancouver Media for Netflix. Pina and Cristina Lopez will be executive producers, along with Britain’s Andy Harries and Sharon Hughff from Left Bank, producers of ‘The Crown’, one of the most successful fictions on the platform. ‘White Lines’ is the third project the screenwriter is preparing for Netflix, along with the third season of ‘Money Heist’ and the female action drama, ‘Sky rojo’, which will start filming in 2019. Pina is the founder of Vancouver Media and the creative mind behind series such as ‘El barco’, ‘Los hombres de Paco’ and ‘Los Serrano’. Among other projects, he’s currently developing the Movistar+ original series ‘The Pier’, the first production for Atresmedia Studios, which will premiere worldwide at Mipcom 2018.

Since September, Netflix has taken over three 1,200m2 soundproof sets, with the option to occupy additional space when the campus is fully built. The creation of this facility reflects an increase in Netflix’s investment in Spain, with over 13,000 people between cast, crew and extras, working on 20 original productions in the country this year. María Peña, Delegate Council for ICEX, the Spanish Government Agency for Exports and Investments, said: “We are confident this project will contribute to positioning Spain as a competitive place in the global entertainment industry.” “Spain has a vast tradition in the creation of innovative content and we are excited to strengthen our investment in Madrid’s heart of

‘FALCO’, A MEXICAN TAKE ON A GERMAN SERIES Ernesto Contreras, director and showrunner of ‘Falco’, the Mexican adaptation of German series ‘Der Letzte Bulle’ (‘The Last Cop’) from Red Arrow International, spoke to ttv about what it took to produce the anticipated series, premiered on Amazon Prime Video, the Telemundo network in the US and on TNT in Latin America. By Enrique de la Rosa Falco Series
Ernesto Contreras, Director and Showrunner of ‘Falco’ “WHEN IT CAME TIME TO SEE HOW WE WOULD DEVELOP THE ADAPTATION, WE DECIDED THAT RATHER THAN COPYING THE ORIGINAL, WE WOULD REINTERPRET THE STORY.”
P
remiered on July 15 on Amazon Prime Video and on the 22nd on the Telemundo network in the US, Mexican series ‘Falco’ (one season, 14 x 60’) also made its debut on Turner Latin America’s pan-regional pay TV network TNT on August 12.
“When it came time to see how we would develop the adaptation, we decided that rather than creating an adaptation and copying the original, we would reinterpret the story, including Mexico City as another character,” Contreras, who also worked on the series as a showrunner, said to ttv.
“Falco is faced with this world that’s changed over the past two decades, having to adapt to what his own family has gone through. He has to rebuild his past, his life and adapt to the new world, facing technology, the internet and cellphones. It’s a shock he must endure slowly,” Contreras explained. The director also said he had to work hard to remember what Mexico City used to be like in 1994 and how it compares to the modern-day Mexico.

It’s the adaptation of German series ‘Der Letzte Bulle’ (‘The Last Cop’), created by Robert Dannenberg and Stefan Scheich, and distributed by Red Arrow International, which came from an alliance between the distributor with Spiral International and Colombian producer Dynamo (‘Narcos’).
Yet, according to Ernesto Contreras, its director, more than an adaptation ‘Falco’ is a reinterpretation of the German original, with a strong presence from Mexico City as its backdrop.
The series begins in 1994 when young detective Alex Falco has it all: a loving wife, a newborn baby girl and his dream job. However, while on the job he gets shot in the head and ends up in a coma until the year 2018, when he opens his eyes to an entirely new world.

“‘FALCO’ FORCED ME TO REMEMBER THE CITY, WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE, WHAT IT SOUNDED LIKE AND WHAT WE WERE LIKE.” “It forced me to remember the city, what it looked like, what it sounded like and what we were like. All that, compared to what we are today and the country we live in now: a chaotic, yet fascinating city,” he said. In regard to the series’ future, Contreras said the plot could continue for more seasons, although there’s nothing to announce just yet. “It’s a story that can expand so much more. We are now focused on this first season’s launch, but I hope the next step is confirmed soon,” he said. Falco was shot entirely on location in Mexico City for four months. It stars Michel Brown (‘Centauro’s Woman’, ‘Hidden Passion’, ‘Mr. Ávila’) with Karina Gidi, Hoze Meléndez, Marina de Tavira, Enrique Arreola, Danae Reynaud, Mauricio García

A CRIME SERIES FOR ALL AUDIENCES Karina Gidi, ‘Falco’s leading actress in the role of Eva Salomón, explained to ttv that while it is a crime series, the story has enough elements to engage diverse audiences. “Teenagers and adults of all classes and colors can enjoy it. It’s entertaining, suspenseful and dynamic, with different cases in each episode. But it also has a sweet and endearing side, because for instance, Falco doesn’t even know how to turn on a computer, use a cellphone or behave in the new world. It’s sweet, because he’s rediscovering his life: his daughter is now a woman, his father is now an old man,” she said.

THE INDUSTRY’S NEW CONSUMPTION HABITS Latin American media’s current status has accelerated premium content production among several players who support the business under a multi-screen joint-venture model. The following report gathers opinions and outlooks from key programming, production and distribution executives about this new era of content development and broadcasting. By Sebastián Amoroso

T
he TV and audiovisual content industry in Latin America is evolving. New business models are being changed due to the arrival of new mobile platforms, second screens and of course, the explosion of OTT SVOD services in the region, with Netflix in the lead. The changes imply redefining users’ video consumption habits. Audiences and consumers have become more selective, demanding higher quality standards and thus, premium content. Audiences have also been segmented notably. Of course, the market is now filled with carriers, and the media concentration and consolidation create a new scenario, while convergence creates new Franken-media that oscillate between traditional and new. And that’s what the most interesting thing about the new industry is: its evolution. Amid this changing scenario, independent producers have taken on a new role, which is growing and becoming more important, even if some already predict their bubble will soon burst. The truth is linear TV networks (broadcast and pay TV), digital platforms, distributors and La casa de papel producers have found common Serie ground under the idea that premium content is king.
Over on the programming side there’s also new formulas that in-
At the same time, as part of these premium alliances, multi-screen broadcasts increase these products’ lifespan, generating real cult phenomenons that erase borders between markets and platforms. Some of the region’s most recent examples include ‘Hasta que te conocí’, ‘El marginal’, ‘El César’, ‘Money Heist’, ‘A Rooster for Esculapio’, ‘The Lobbyist’, ‘Luis Miguel, the series’, ‘Selena’s Secret’ or ‘Mary Magdalene’, among others. JOINT VENTURE AS A NEW BUSINESS MODEL. In this new industry, the co-production model is giving way to a strategic alliance model to standarize multi-screen premium content production in the region, especially for fiction series. This new business scheme includes all types of players: producers-distributors, distributor-producers, independent producers, linear TV (broadcast and pay TV), SVOD OTT and multi-territory distributors, which split the rights and the exclusivity based on their investment. “The market continues to get more fragmented at full speed. Ad dollars continue to drop and split among the leading players,” said Andrés Badra, founder and CEO of ABBA. “Faced with a situation like this that’s common and global, it will

be imperative for a business model to back these strategic alliances, associations and joint ventures. It’s a battle but not or survival, but rather to land the best partner for the game,” the executive said. Darío Turovelzky, SVP of Global Content at Viacom International Media Networks Americas (VMNA), agrees with this industry diagnosis. “Today, a business model that works for this type of series is strategic alliances.” VMNA currently has several fiction projects in development, including the series ‘To Catch a Thief’, the adaptation of the Alfred Hitchcock classic by Paramount Pictures, together with multi-screen partners. The independent producer is also starting to play a role in this Premium business scheme and its growth in the region has been ex-

“This type of producers need an executive who dominates the commercial aspect very well,” said Fidela Navarro, CEO of Dopamine, responsible for the super series ‘Mary Magdalene’ with Sony Pictures Television (SPT). “When we talk about a multiscreen project, it’s an important task and not every producer has people with the profile and the ability to do it,” said the executive who’s now working on a series based on Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. Meanwhile, Alex Marín, EVP of Distribution and Networks at SPT Latin America, group that in addition to being partners with Dopamine also has several alliances and fiction projects in the region, agrees with this analysis and sees beyond the initial boom. “When you have a good story, it’s worth telling it. The problem is that not everyone has two, three or four good stories in a row. It’s an opportunity for the good ones to see the light and the bad ones to sink,” he said. According to Francisco Cordero, CEO of independent producer BTF Media, responsible for biopics such as ‘Hasta que te conocí’, ‘El César’ and the thriller ‘Selena’s Secret’ for Disney Media Distribution Latin America (DMDLA), among others alliances and projects in the region, there is “more competition and more productions. The level of production is growing and very interesting projects are being developed in the region.”
“I think it’s a time to take advantage and join forces to reach higher production budgets and create content with a higher quality than what we’re used to,” he added. In addition, Ana Paula Valdovinos, VP of Production and Development at Telemundo International Studios, responsible for titles like ‘The Inmate’ -US Hispanic adaptation of Argentina’s ‘El marginal’-, said the strategic alliance model is here to stay. “Co-production is starting to make sense for everyone, but not only on the financial and economic side, but also because you share know-how and the experience each potential partner can bring to the table,” she said. And on that same note, Fidela Navarro added that new players and new regions can also be added to the mix. “I think the next and most complex step is to achieve a multi-screen distribution between several territories beyond the Americas, with Europe and Asia. For example, a simultaneous premiere on broadcast TV, OTT an pay TV worldwide, in Spain, Germany or France.” All the while global SVOD platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime are also looking to create their own originals in the region. “We are working with Latin American productions to identify that special story that’s unique, truly local and offers a different perspective, really drawing in local audiences,” said Pablo Iacovello, director of Content Acquisitions at Amazon Prime Video for Latin America.
Prime Originals in the region include ‘Diablo guardián’, ‘Un extraño enemigo –premiered on October 2nd- and the biopic project ‘Maradona, sueño bendito’, based on the football star’s life, co-produced by BTF Media, Dhana Media and Raza. “A few months ago we announced the production of a new series based on the life of Diego Maradona which we believe audiences all over Latin America will love,” he said. NEW PROGRAMMING EXPERIENCES. Audiences’ new viewing habits have prompted broadcasters to experiment with new programming formulas, especially for linear TV -mainly broadcast TV-, following digital consumption patterns. These habits shaped by a high level of content consumption are based on the possibility to access and watch entire seasons of TV shows: the now popular binge-watchers and binge-racers. In this scenario, premium multiscreen programming can generate emblematic examples like the ones detailed in this report.
Jimmy Arteaga, President of Programming, Production and Promotion at Wapa TV in Puerto Rico and Programming Adviser and
“Series work when viewers find them appealing. This has to do with the producer’s ideas and the programmer’s patience to be able to offer it in the perfect timeslot,” he said.
Pablo Iacovello,
Director of Content Acquisitions at Amazon Prime Video for Latin America
But the truth is that today, linear TV programming models can be too old for certain types of content and premium users’ experience. “There are times when a series’ broadcast is not in tune with today’s viewing habits that allow you to watch two or three episodes in one night. At Telefe we ask ourselves what would happen if we get more in line with this consumption trend,” Darío Turovelzky said. An example of this experience for the Argentine network was the successful programming strategy used for ‘Sandro de América’, which was aired as a marathon for binge-watching. The Telemundo network in the US also took a similar approach with its premium series ‘The Inmate’, aired as an “exclusive 13-night event.” Another example worth mentioning is the premium content programming strategy based on expanding titles across many platforms and generating a boomerang effect. This approach was used, for instance, with Argentine series ‘El marginal’, whose first season aired on public TV completely unnoticed. And later when it was acquired by Netflix, regional audi-

ences’ demand for it turned it into a cult series. The series’ second season, produced again by Underground and Dori Media, premiered this year reaching record numbers on TV Publica in Argentina and becoming one of the highest-rated premiere of the year, which later premiered on Netflix. A third season has already been confirmed.

“Everything is somewhat unstable these days and going through an experimental phase. I believe there’s an intersection between premium platforms and broadcast TV, but they don’t necessarily overlap,” said María Iregui Rodríguez, VP of Networks at RCN Television in Colombia.
Consultant for Canal 1 in Colombia, added that success is now about each window’s singularities, but rather the content’s quality.

“Without Netflix, ‘El Marginal’ would’ve stopped after its second season. It’s a matter of windows, and a programming and distribution equation,” said Juan Parodi, CEO of The Magic Eye, independent producer responsible for ‘Sandro de America’ and the upcoming Mexican series ‘Mojado’. This boomerang effect is an example of how premium content can be boosted from many different windows and even through traditional programming models. Another recent example is ‘Money Heist’, the fiction series that aired on Antena 3 in Spain as just another show on Spanish TV. And yet, when it made its way to Netflix, it became another cultural phenomenon among audiences in Latin America, which demanded a third season from Vancouver Media. “In addition to producing content for third parties like Netflix, Amazon or Movistar, one of the goals for our new company, Atresmedia Studios, is co-production. Latin America plays a key role. We set out to create Spanish-language fiction for it to travel to Latin America as co-productions,” said Sonia Martínez, director of Fiction at Atresmedia. This new modern-day programming shift also affected Argentine premium series ‘The Lobbyist’ by El Trece, Turner Latin America and Cablevisión-Flow, which aired on broadcast TV on El Trece and scored modest results. However, the complete first season of the series produced by Pol-ka producciones was the most demanded on Flow, Clarin Group’s streaming platform.
Lastly, Globo has also delved into the new era of programming with premium Brazilian series such as ‘Jailers’, ‘Under Pressure’, ‘Above Justice’, ‘The Hunger’ or ‘Supermax’, which aired on its broadcast TV services (Globo), pay TV (Globosat) and SVOD (Globoplay). “We develop specific broadcasting strategies for each of our titles to air on linear TV, OTT or both at the same time, always focusing on what pleases audiences the most,” said Angela Colla, director of International Sales at Globo. “We believe in experimenting with several programming options for each production’s unique dynamics,” she added. IS A MULTI-SCREEN RATINGS SYSTEM NECESSARY? Among the elements that define and differentiate linear TV from SVOD platforms is the presence and absence of advertising, respectively. Another key characteristic -as previously mentioned- is users’ consumption experience and the number of premium content hours available. However, the most important element that differentiates windows is the methods used to measure their ratings. Linear TV’s ratings numbers are open to the public, while digital platforms keep theirs a secret. In light of these two different parameters, how can one know which titles are successful? “We can’t compare broadcast TV to Netflix. Broadcast TV is measured and audited minute by minute. Netflix isn’t,” said Eric Jurgensen,
President and CEO of Jurgensen Media Group. “What would I do? I would first air it on broadcast TV and open it to live online digital TV (simulcast). And we are trying to have it measured through Ibope. I wouldn’t expand the rights to SVOD simultaneously, I would wait a while,” he said. HBO Latin America, which has linear and non-linear windows such as its streaming platform HBO Go, these models complement the potential of premium series like ‘Mr. Ávila’, ‘El negocio’ or ‘El hipnotizador’. ”There are many benefits for linear TV networks. First, with this model you can reach more audiences, bolstering the networks and the productions. In addition, by extending the content’s availability immediately, you create more opportunities for audiences to feel closer to the brand, since you tend to their different viewing needs,” said Gustavo Grossman, Corporate Networks VP at HBO Latin America Group. Darío Turovelzsky added that it’s necessary for there to be multiscreen ratings to promote premium content development in the region.
But of course, it all depends on who financed the project and thus who gets the first window.
Gustavo Grossman,
Corporate Networks VP at HBO Latin America Group
So, who will survive in this new ecosystem in Latin America where so many new players are added, especially digital giants like Amazon Prime, YouTube Premium, Apple or The Walt Disney Company’s imminent OTT platform? “Everyone will have their place in the next ten years,” said Andrés Badra. “Traditional, lineal, ad-supported TV will probably reinvent itself to survive and continue growing at a more conservative rate, with 30% of the ad market,” he said. “Big companies from the OTT or digital world like Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu; telcos and OTT will go through the motions and learning process of producing content at such immense scales with non-traditional partners,” he added. So the question is, he said, “how much time do consumers actually have to watch content? That’s where the battle for people’s time will start and everyone will have their space, even if it’s tiny or niche. But only a few who join forces will rule due to their offers’ relevance and global omnipresence.” In this context, Lagomarsino believes being flexible enough to
Alex Lagomarsino, CEO of MediaBiz
adapt and having premium content will be the keys to survive in the industry in the near future. I think the problem isn’t today, but rather the future, when digital players like Amazon and Netflix find their place on one side, with pay TV networks offering their own platforms like Play and Go, and broadcast TV; and then audiences stand on the other side. Will they acquire several SVOD services or choose an aggregator? How and when will they consume content?,” he said. “As with every competition, the pieces fall into place as time goes on. That’s why alliances, strategies, flexibility to adapt and finally content, will make the difference,” he concluded. ttv

“Holistic measurements are important because for a project to be profitable you need to know how it performed. If you take ‘A Rooster for Esculapio’ numbers on Telefe, TNT and Flow, there’s an interesting universe to find advertisers; since they are three different platforms and three different owners, it’s more diverse,” he said.
“There isn’t a formula, that’s what TV is,” said Alex Lagomarsino, CEO of MediaBiz. However, he added, “series’ natural place is SVOD and then broadcast TV. That has to be reflected in each one’s investment, in relation to the commercial benefit: first window, biggest investment. Broadcast TV can’t live or compete with SVOD. They complement each other.”

Vincent Sadusky, CEO of Univision
NAMED NEW CEO OF UNIVISION in May of this year, Vincent Sadusky held his first financial results presentation since he took over the Hispanic giant and took the opportunity to explain part of his strategy for the network’s future, which revolves around focusing on the company’s “core business”, meaning entertaining and empowering Hispanic audiences. “Despite a rapidly evolving media landscape, the company has a lot to be optimistic about and an incredibly strong foundation to build from. We provide unparalleled access to a coveted and fast-growing consumer group with increasing buying power,” he said. His statement helps explain some of the recent steps he’s taken since taking over the media giant like the plans to sell Gizmodo Media Group (GMG) and The Onion, a wave of layoffs and the dismissal of key executives. As for the financial results, the company reported profits of 114.3 million dollars for the second quarter of 2018, up from the numbers recorded during the same period last year, when it closed with 106.1 million dollars. As the company explained, the increased profit was helped by a 3.6% decline in selling, general and administrative expenses. Earnings, in turn, closed at 749.8 million dollars, down 2% from last year. Propelling this trend was the advertising revenue down 7.3% to US$434.0 million. Non advertising revenue, including carriage fees and content licensing, rose 6.5% to $315.8 million dollars. APPOINTMENT
