Chronicles of an ancient civilization recorded from the time of Sumerians mentioned a settlement in the deserts of Middle East; described as an oasis of life flowing with sweet water spring. It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden, described as “Paradise” in the world’s oldest poetic saga - The Epic of Gilgamesh. “The Sacred Land” or the “Land of Eternal Life” termed as ‘Dilmun’ before is now known as the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Dilmun civilization lasted from 2200 to 300 BC, during which time, according to Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian inscriptions, the island’s residents were not only commercially active, plying the busy Gulf waterways, but were also attentive to matters at home. The proper burial of the sick, handicapped and young in elaborate chambers, together with their chattels of ceramic, glass and beads (displayed at the Bahrain National Museum), suggest a civilization of considerable social and economic development, assisted by the perpetual abundance of ‘sweet’, in other words potable, water on the island. Dilmun’s economic success was due in no small part to the trading of Omani copper, which was measured using the internationally recognized ‘Dilmun Standard’ (the weights can be seen in the Bahrain National Museum). When the copper trade declined, in around 1800 B.C., Dilmun’s strength declined with it, leaving the island vulnerable to the predatory interests of the surrounding big powers. 14

However, the most notable feature of the archaeological heritage of Bahrain are the numerous burial mounds, sometime labeled as the world’s largest ancient cemetery, which are scattered at numerous locations over a wide area of Bahrain.
Although the chambers usually contained one burial each, some contain several people and the secondary chambers often contain none. The deceased were generally laid with their head in the alcove end of the chamber and laying on their right side. The bodies were accompanied by some items, which includes few pieces of pottery and occasionally shell or stone stamp seals, baskets sealed with asphalt, ivory objects, stone jars, and copper weapons. The presence of sweet-water springs under the sea, mingling with the brackish waters of the shallow oyster beds, contributes to the peculiar color and luster of Bahrain’s pearls, and it was upon the value of these pearls that Bahrain grew into one of the most important trading posts in the region. Bahrain holds an illustrious past when it was an important trading and commercial center throughout ensuing millennia. Its name is from the Arabic term “al-bahrayn”, meaning two seas. It has been visited and at times occupied by the Babylonians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Persians, Portuguese, and British.
Explorers back then also knew Bahrain as the “Island of a million palm trees”.

IN FOCUS Bahrain was allowed the production of dates, which were not easily, or even possibly grown elsewhere. Despite the insufficient rainfall, agriculture in Bahrain historically was an important sector of the economy. Before the development of the oil industry, date palm cultivation dominated Bahrain’s agriculture, producing sufficient dates for both domestic consumption and export.
16
First Quarter 2012
At least twenty-three varieties of dates are grown, and the leaves, branches, buds, and flowers of the date palm also are used extensively. Bahrain consequently had its first natural export.
The second was the Pearl. Historically, the world’s best known pearls came from the pristine waters of the Arabian Gulf, close to what is now known as Bahrain. The Kingdom’s pearling era and the single product economy has sustained the country for many centuries. Bahrain is known as the prime location for the collection and trade of pearls, which has intensely shaped the Kingdom’s identity. Since historic times various sources acknowledge the outstanding role of Bahrain’s pearls, which are said to be especially beautiful, and of the highest quality. The ancient pearling industry provided the only real income for most of its people. In fact, A few families would leave the nomadic desert lifestyle and settle on the coast to fish. Some of the fishermen probably found the occasional pearl when wading in the shallows, and kept it until there was an opportunity to barter it. To gather enough oysters to make a living, however, required a huge communal effort, as well as people who were able to dive to depths of around 40 metres without equipment, in order to access the offshore oyster beds. In response to the increased demand for pearls, many more families settled permanently in the coastal villages. Others would live on the
coast during the four months of the main pearling season, from May to September, and return to the desert in the winter.
Only Bahrain, however, can claim a truly integral connection with the sweet-water springs that bubble off-shore helped bring more than 2000 years of settlement, the layers of which are exposed in rich archaeological sites around the island. The springs also encouraged the most lustrous of pearls – the trade in which helped build the Island’s early fortunes.

Discovery of oil in Bahrain was one of the biggest factors that accelerated the economic conditions of the country and forms a high water mark in the history of the Kingdom. Although oil was discovered in Bahrain, it was relatively little compared to other Gulf States. Bahrain’s Economic Vision for 2030 aspires to shift from an economy built on oil wealth to a productive, globally competitive economy, shaped by the government and driven by a pioneering private sector – an economy that raises a broad middle class of Bahrainis who enjoy good living standards through increased productivity and high-wage jobs.

The year-round warm weather, a fascinating mix of landscapes and an idyllic setting in the Arabian Gulf make Bahrain an extremely pleasant place to settle. The majority of the population in the Kingdom, now resides in towns, but in the north and northwest of the main island, where irrigation has long been carried out using artesian water, there are numerous small villages and isolated dwellings where horticulture is the way of life. This area has an aspect of great fertility, which contrasts starkly with the bare desert appearance of much of the country. Villages consist, for the most part, of substantial flat-roofed houses built of stone or concrete. There is little permanent settlement either in the southern half of Bahrain Island or on the smaller islands. More than one-third of the population lives in the two principal cities, Manama and AlMuharraq. Manama, with its port of Mina Salman, is the largest city and contains the main government offices, the business and 20

financial district, many chain hotels and tourism apartments, facinating dinings, Western-style shops, and a traditional Arab souk (market). It has a distinctly modern appearance as compared with Al-Muharraq, which is densely settled and has many narrow, winding streets.
Bahrain celebrates Manama as the Capital of Arab Culture 2012.
This auspicious distinction is an initiative taken by the Arab League under the UNESCO Cultural Capitals Programme to promote and celebrate Arab culture and encourage cooperation in the Arab region. The Capital of Arab Tourism award is another Arab League initiative, which is aimed to encourage inter-Arab tourism along with
highlighting customs and traditions particular to each country. This title, which Manama was awarded for this year, is an emphasis of Bahrain’s pioneering role in the field of culture and knowledge exchange in the region as well as a testament to its thousand years of civilization. Temples 1 and 11 are built on two superposed platforms and are connected to a monumental well and its spring, which apparently played an important role in the local cult. Little remains of the third temple, which includes a large square platform and was apparently larger than the two previous ones.

IN FOCUS Located in the Arabian Gulf near Saudi Arabia, this small desert island nation is readily recognized as the leading financial hub of the Middle East. With its rich pearling history prior to the discovery of oil in 1932, the Kingdom of Bahrain has made it a priority to develop and showcase its heritage to visitors under the direction of the Ministry of Culture. Manama’s liberal cosmopolitan city, a popular stopping off point for cruise ships, embraces visitors with its warm Arab friendliness and hospitality. If you find yourself in the Kingdom, an evening exploring the historic Manama Souq is an experience not to be missed. To know a place well, one must walk the ground, talk to the locals, and soak up the history. Let’s begin at Bab al Bahrain.
38
First Quarter 2012
Historic Landmark
Built in 1949 and refurbished in 1986 to incorporate Islamic architectural features, Bab al Bahrain – which means Gateway of Bahrain – marks the main entrance to the Manama Souq. When constructed, this arched building was very near the water. Due to extensive land reclamation over the years, it’s now a hearty 5-10 minute walk over to the new Bahrain Financial Harbor buildings in order to even glimpse any water… and then the area is punctured with everconstant construction and further reclamation. Bab al Bahrain’s ground floor houses the tourist information office and shop brimming with guidebooks, handicrafts and natural pearls for sale. This might be a good first stop for tourists. Taxis are readily available here for transport back to your hotel or ship. The Souq’s bustling marketplace with its traditional and contemporary shops recently completed two phases of renovation. The prime goal of the project, initiated under the directives of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, was to rebrand the Manama Souq into a significant and selfsufficient urban center, according to officials, by returning the souq “back to its prominence within the daily fabric of life in Bahrain.” As pedestrians pass under the low arch, they are immediately greeted by a covered roof canopy high overhead connecting buildings on both sides that are now sporting new facelifts. There is also an exterior walkway on the second level. Known as Bab al Bahrain Avenue, the shaded pedestrian mall – a former one-lane street – features traditional wooden doors and Islamic architectural detail of Middle Eastern souqs along with and an eclectic mixture of beckoning shops and shopkeepers. The deeper into the souq you venture, the more original and historic details you will see.

visitors should plan their outings accordingly. During the week the souq closes at nine p.m., but many shops remain open longer on the weekends. In Bahrain, the weekend begins on Thursday evening and ends Saturday night. The smells and sights abound. Don’t miss out on the spice souq. Shopkeepers welcome the opportunity to tell visitors about the history of spices and beam when you comment in awe on the multicolored spice pyramids they painstakingly create. Souq air is thick with the smells of spices – cumin and saffron – while only a few alleyways over strong oilbased Arabic perfume fills the air. Wandering into a corner perfumery shop is a pleasant deviation. The shopkeepers are more than willing to explain the origins or their scents. You’ll quickly run out of untested wrist and neck space from sampling the exotic oils. My favorite is Rose Musk, not too heavy and not too light. And the Arab men will take notice when you pass. Hawkers and traders are not shy as they vie for your attention and summon you over. Whether you are interested in Arabic perfume, knock-off designer watches, 24-carat gold jewelry, coveted antiques
and regional handicraft, or modern appliances, unusual trinkets, traditional clothing or bright colored Indian fabric, bargaining – and sometimes intense negotiating – is welcomed and expected. Don’t worry about language barriers; English is widely spoken and understood. Although most vendors are Indian, the massive
weekend crowds comprise all ethnicities and walks of life. Most foreigners know about the flowing black robe (abaya) many Muslim women wear, but few are aware of its array of style and embellishment options. In the souq there are literally dozens of shops selling black abayas, yet their embellishments are of every color possible with highly detailed embroidery and beadwork, and adorned with matching headscarves. Don’t believe anyone who tells you that Arab women are not interested in fashion or wearing the most popular clothing and shoes. I can’t count the number of women’s ornate stilettos I saw peaking out beneath elegantly flowing abayas. And the way they carry themselves as they walk is strikingly dignified yet always respectfully. Visiting the souq is not just about shopping however. This is an enriching cultural and social experience. Be adventurous. Plan to take your time wandering the narrow streets and passageways of rows upon rows of open stalls, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself temporarily turned around. It happens to everyone. After all, that’s part of the intrigue of discovering new sights and meeting people of a foreign land; offering an ideal opportunity to converse with locals while asking for directions.

Although spilling over onto the narrow sidewalks, their friendly smiles will reassure you that you may indeed weave your way in and around their chairs and tables as you continue on your way. They welcome Americans and cherish the opportunity to talk if you approach them. Although very friendly and interactive, local Arab men will respect your privacy and not draw you into conversation unless you seek it. But if you

do, chairs will be offered, a cup of hot tea or Arabic coffee will magically appear, and you can plan on some very interesting conversations with everyday Arab men. If jewelry catches your fancy, you are in for a rare treat. The souq has two gold souq’s. Gold City, located between Al Khalifa and Government avenues, is characterized as a souq within a souq, offering a dazzling array of Middle Eastern and Indian jewelry along with a number of local perfumeries and watch stands. And yes, bargaining is expected here also. The Gold souq, tucked away in a two-storey building off of Bab al Bahrain Avenue, similar to Gold City’s jewelry is all 18K and 24K gold items. In the Middle East, 10K and 14K gold items are not considered or accepted as ‘gold’ jewelry. If pearls are more to your liking, Bahraini natural
pearls are one of a kind and available here. You will not find any cultured pearls in the country; only natural – the only natural pearls in the world today – and sold by the ounce. It is illegal to bring cultured pearls into the country to sell.
Spiraling Minarets
Unassuming mosques are interspersed between buildings throughout the souq with their call to prayer offer a welcoming repose to the constant chattering of foreign languages and dialects. There’s so much to absorb and experience in this traditional Arabic marketplace that given the opportunity of a repeat visit, spending another evening in the Manama Souq would never be a decision regretted.

In addition, they are the first of their kind in the world, using wind energy to provide 11 – 15% of the electricity needs of the office towers. About the BWTC Wind Turbines:
The BWTC, Bahrain’s iconic landmark, is the first skyscraper in the world to suspend electricity-generating wind turbines between two commercial tower structures, surpassing existing construction boundaries as well as the commercial aspects of the project. The wind turbines were successfully installed in March 2007, commissioned in April 2008 and officially certified by Bahrain’s Electricity Distribution Directorate (EDD) in December 2008. Designed by Atkins, the twin 50-storey, 240 metre-high towers stand in the central business district of Manama, with its 29-metre diameter turbines spinning between sail shaped towers, and producing between 11 to 15 percent of the total electrical consumption of the buildings. Over the course of one year, these turbines are capable of generating 1,100 to 1,300 MWh of electricity, which is equivalent to the power necessary to power approximately 250 homes for more than a year. This is expected to eliminate the equivalent of around 55,000 cubic kgC of carbon emissions into the environment per annum.

participate in group discussions and debates on how to increase MICE business into Bahrain and how they can work together as industry colleagues.
Partners
In 2012 BECA will become a strategic partner with Tamkeen, which is fantastic news for companies who require their financial support in order to exhibit. BECA’s other partners include of course the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Bahrain Chamber of Commerce, and the official carrier Gulf Air.
BECA and Bahrain
A destination for the active contemporary business traveler Bahrain’s location in the Gulf makes it one of
MICE
the hub airports for many international airlines so it’s an easy flight from Europe, Asia and even the US. Gulf Air, the official carrier for events and partner of BECA in boosting Bahrain’s position as a leading destination for corporate meetings, incentive travel, conferences and exhibitions. Bahrain’s International airport is actually just 20 minutes drive. Generally, Bahrain is meetings friendly due to its size. It is a small island Kingdom and getting around is easy and low cost compared to other GCC destinations. Whether organizing a small corporate meeting or an annual exhibition, navigating around the island is not difficult and nothing is far away in terms of restaurant, recreational, entertainment and retail options as well as venues. Bahrain has more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, which makes Bahrain very knowledgeable and flexible when it comes to the delegates’ needs and requests.
Key developments for conference and exhibition space
A new expo-city is planned for development at Sakhir City near the Bahrain International Circuit. This will meet the future demand for meeting and exhibition space in Bahrain and will help promote the kingdom’s reputation as a destination of choice. The estimated cost for the Phase 1 is US$ 385 million and will be completed 2015. Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 has also played a large part in the planned developments for the new exhibition center as the government wants Bahrain to be seen as a key leisure, tourism and business destination in the Gulf.
A venue of choice for world-class exhibitions and conferences
Many organizations hold their annual conferences in Bahrain especially because Bahrain continues to maintain its position as the Gulf’s leading international finance center. Bahrain is close to Saudi Arabia (just an hour drive away) and businesses from Saudi Arabia hold their meetings in Bahrain, as it is easier for clients and employees to reach Bahrain than Saudi. You will find many different nationalities in
Bahrain and this means many different types of visitors and attendees for each meeting or event. BECA has hosted many exhibitions and conferences including the Jewellery Arabia; an annual major prestigious jewellery exhibition in the Middle East with more than 600 exhibitors and a record of about 32 countries – as well as 46,000 visitors where 41,000 are jewellery trade buyers and private collectors organized by Arabian Exhibition Management; GulfBId & Gulf Interior organised by Hilal Conferences and Exhibitions Co.; Mother & Baby show, organized by Magnum Events and Exhibition Management; Middle East Refining and Petrochemicals(Petrotech) Conference & Exhibitions, organized by Arabian Exhibition Management; The Food and Hospitality Expo, and Health + Wellness expo organized by BECA.
