MESSAGE Since we open the first HarleyDavidson速 dealer in Saudi Arabia all official H.O.G.速 rallies are my passion. One of the very disappointing part about these gatherings is that the organisers never get to enjoy the fun because they are so much dedicated and they are the reason for it to happen. I admire them a lot. I am so glad that an official Bahrain Chapter H.O.G.速 rally is happening in the Kingdom. May this be the beginning of all the future fun and joyful rides. I wish all the success and thank you all those who are behind the scene working hard.

MONTHER AL-MUTLAQ Harley-Davidson速 Saudi Arabia and Bahrain Managing Director

MESSAGE 1st H.O.G.® here.

Bahrain rally finally

I remember when Abdullah & I spoke about it and how excited he got when he closed his eyes and thought about this dream coming true; and here it’s finally happening. After all the late nights, the phone calls, the messages, the meetings and the emails for the past 8 months H.O.G.® Bahrain chapter’s dream is born. I am very excited to attend this new born event which I believe will take a giant step in the near future of our H.O.G.® MENA region and will soon be among the top rallies. I hope these 3 days are well spent, filled with lots of good memories to cherish, and lots of laughter that we will ride back home with.

AHMED FARHAT Harley-Davidson® MENA H.O.G.® & Rider Services Manager

MESSAGE I’m proud to present to you the H.O.G.® Bahrain Rally first version. No words to describe the mixed emotions I am having right now, the excitement, the pride, the fear and the anxiety. These are all part of the Rally package as your host. The idea to make this 1st H.O.G.® Rally started in 2014, actually in August. It sounded insane and no one could imagine it will happen. Like any other idea, when you’re surrounded by positive energy radiating from a committee of bright individuals, dedicated to deliver excellence and lifetime experience, the idea became a plan that was executed to make the event we are enjoying today.

SHAIKH ABDULLA AL KHALIFA Director I thank the authorities in Bahrain and Saudi for all the assistance they provided to the event.

I thank our event organizer, Modern Age for this amazing I invite you to enjoy with no limit this work. And last but not the least I 1st H.O.G.® Rally in Bahrain. I am thank my people, my friends, my confident we all are going to have musketeers, my family and my unforgettable moments during H.O.G.® committee. these 3 days. Having the H.O.G.® Bahrain Committee working hard Life is a ride, not a destination so to make every moment count. let’s make our moment out of it. I thank every member working on this event and their active participations. To all our partners and sponsors.

MESSAGE Occupied with the HarleyDavidson速 riders in the last 20 years, I have been fortunate enough to be part of the organizing committee of many Rallies. It is the first time, I am enjoying such a wonderful teamwork from the H.O.G.速 team, Dealer team, Motor company and the dealer management. We started couple of months back with a casual conversation to build an ongoing H.O.G.速 chapter event for the Kingdom of Bahrain. With the limited coins in the kitty we never could think this big. Amazingly, the hard work and the spirit has managed to pull in the involvement of leading sponsors, Ministry of culture, over and above the participation of chapter members from around the middle east. I take this opportunity to thank all those who are supporting us and working hard behind the scene to make this event.. The talk of the town.

HISTORY Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE: HOG, formerly HD), often abbreviated H-D or Harley, is an American motorcycle manufacturer. Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during the first decade of the 20th century, it was one of two major American motorcycle manufacturers (Indian being the other) to survive the Great Depression.[6] Harley-Davidson also survived a period of poor quality control and competition from Japanese manufacturers. From 1977 to 2014 the only motorcycles sold to the public under the Harley-Davidson brand have been heavyweight motorcycles designed for highway cruising, with engine displacements greater than 700 cc. Harley-Davidson motorcycles, or “Harleys”, are noted for the tradition of heavy customization that gave rise to the chopper style of motorcycle. Except for the modern VRSC and Street model families, current Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflect the styles of classic Harley designs. While Harley-Davidson’s attempts to establish itself in the light motorcycle market have met little success and have largely been abandoned since the 1978 sale of its Italian Aermacchi subsidiary, the company reentered the middleweight market in 2014 with its Street series of motorcycles. Harley-Davidson sustains a large brand community which keeps active through clubs, events and a museum. Licensing of the Harley-Davidson brand and logo accounted for $40 million (0.8%) of the company’s net revenue in 2010.

From left: William A. Davidson, Walter Davidson, Sr., Arthur Davidson and William S. Harley

In 1901, 20 year-old William S. Harley drew up plans for a small engine with a displacement of 7.07 cubic inches (116 cc) and four-inch (102 mm) flywheels.[9] The engine was designed for use in a regular pedal-bicycle frame. Over the next two years, Harley and his childhood friend Arthur Davidson worked on their motorbicycle using the northside Milwaukee machine shop at the home of their friend, Henry Melk. It was finished in 1903 with the help of Arthur’s brother, Walter Davidson. Upon testing their power-cycle, Harley and the Davidson brothers found it unable to climb the hills around Milwaukee without pedal assistance. They quickly wrote off their first motor-bicycle as a valuable learning experiment. Work immediately began on a new and improved second-generation machine. This first “real” Harley-Davidson motorcycle had a bigger engine of 24.74 cubic inches (405 cc) with 9.75 inches (25 cm) flywheels weighing 28 lb (13 kg). The machine’s advanced loop-frame pattern was similar to the 1903 Milwaukee Merkel motorcycle (designed by Joseph Merkel, later

of Flying Merkel fame). The bigger engine and loop-frame design took it out of the motorized bicycle category and marked the path to future motorcycle designs. The boys also received help with their bigger engine from outboard motor pioneer Ole Evinrude, who was then building gas engines of his own design for automotive use on Milwaukee’s Lake Street.

The prototype of the new loop-frame HarleyDavidson was assembled in a 10 ft × 15 ft (3.0 m × 4.6 m) shed in the Davidson family backyard. Most of the major parts, however, were made elsewhere, including some probably fabricated at the West Milwaukee railshops where oldest brother William A. Davidson was then toolroom foreman. This prototype machine was functional by September 8, 1904, when it competed in a Milwaukee motorcycle race held at State Fair Park. It was ridden by Edward Hildebrand and placed fourth. This is the first documented appearance of a HarleyDavidson motorcycle in the historical record. In January 1905, small advertisements were placed in the Automobile and Cycle Trade Journal that offered bare Harley-Davidson engines to the do-it-yourself trade. By April, complete motorcycles were in production on a very limited basis. That year, the first HarleyDavidson dealer, Carl H. Lang of Chicago, sold three bikes from the five built in the Davidson backyard shed. (Some years later the original shed was taken to the Juneau Avenue factory www.hogbahrainchapter.com

where it would stand for many decades as a tribute to the Motor Company’s humble origins. Unfortunately, the first shed was accidentally destroyed by contractors in the early 1970s during a clean-up of the factory yard.) In 1906, Harley and the Davidson brothers built their first factory on Chestnut Street (later Juneau Avenue). This location remains HarleyDavidson’s corporate headquarters today. The first Juneau Avenue plant was a 40 ft × 60 ft (12 m × 18 m) single-story wooden structure. The company produced about 50 motorcycles that year. In 1907, William S. Harley graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a degree in mechanical engineering. That year additional factory expansion came with a second floor and later with facings and additions of Milwaukee pale yellow (“cream”) brick. With the new facilities production increased to 150 motorcycles in 1907. The company was officially incorporated that September. They

21

also began selling their motorcycles to police departments around this time, a market that has been important to them ever since. Production in 1905 and 1906 were all singlecylinder models with 26.84 cubic inches (440 cc) engines. In February 1907 a prototype model with a 45-degree V-Twin engine was displayed at the Chicago Automobile Show. Although shown and advertised, very few V-Twin models were built between 1907 and 1910. These first V-Twins displaced 53.68 cubic inches (880 cc) and produced about 7 horsepower (5.2 kW). This gave about double the power of the first singles. Top speed was about 60 mph (100 km/h). Production jumped from 450 motorcycles in 1908 to 1,149 machines in 1909.[14] By 1911, some 150 makes of motorcycles had already been built in the United States – although just a handful would survive the 1910s.

In 1911, an improved V-Twin model was introduced. The new engine had mechanically operated intake valves, as opposed to the “automatic” intake valves used on earlier V-Twins that opened by engine vacuum. With a displacement of 49.48 cubic inches (811 cc), the 1911 V-Twin was smaller than earlier twins, but gave better performance. After 1913 the majority of bikes produced by HarleyDavidson would be V-Twin models. By 1913, the yellow brick factory had been demolished and on the site a new 5-story structure had been built. Begun in 1910, the factory with its many additions would take up two blocks along Juneau Avenue and around the corner on 38th Street. Despite the competition, Harley-Davidson was already pulling ahead of Indian and would dominate motorcycle racing after 1914. Production that year swelled to 16,284 machines.

HISTORY OF CUSTOMISATION

“Motorcycles have always been dramatic. They’re not for everybody and never will be. This is a product that people can take to an extreme as a means of self-expression.” Willie G. Davidson

The “Custom Movement” we experience today was born out of the Second World War. It was Harley-Davidson® who adapted a number of their bikes to meet the needs of the armed forces - they were loved by many. Following the War, as the economy started to reestablish itself, motorcycles became increasingly popular, riders started using their bikes to express themselves and stand out from the crowd. At Harley-Davidson we continue to support this passion today and offer a vast array of Parts and Accessories to inspire you.

Do’s and Don’ts

of riding motorcycle Basic tips in preparing as a rider: 1. A helmet 2. A long sleeved shirt or jacket, which fits closely around the wrists. 3. Long pants to provide protection from the hottest parts of the bike 4. Full fingered gloves to protect against abrasion and help maintain control of the motor bike 5. A visor or goggles to ensure good visibility is maintained and to protect the eyes from dust, wind and debris 6. Robust footwear for maximum grip, preferably covering the ankles, with no laces as these can be dangerous if they become tangled in the pedals.

Preparing your bike: • Oil and fluids - Check brake, coolant and clutch fluid levels and of course petrol. Also check the hoses, lines and reservoirs for leaks. • Controls - Check all levers, control cables and hoses to make sure they are in good working order and will not interfere when riding the bike. In addition, make sure that your throttle moves freely. • Lights and electrics - Make sure the battery terminals are clean, electrolyte fluid is sufficient and the battery is properly secured. Check that all the lights work properly and that there are no cracks in them. Check the routing of wires and beware of frayed or cracked wires. • Chassis - Check condition of the frame, forks and shocks. Check the chain or belt for tension, lubrication and wear. Ensure all the fasteners, bolts and cotter pins are in place and not broken, loose or missing. • Tyres - Check for proper inflation as under inflation will wear the sides of the tyres, whereas over inflation will wear the middle of the tyres. Also check that there are no foreign bodies embedded in the tread. Remember a flat tyre is a major problem on a bike as there is no spare.

Safety Riding Tips: 1. Be careful on bends and don’t overtake if you can’t see the road ahead 2. Learn how to handle the power of the motor bike 3. Learn to brake properly without going over the handlebars, as a motorbike’s stopping power is nearly all in the front wheel. Equally don’t use the back brakes alone as this can cause the bike to skid. 4. Wear protective clothing 5. Ensure the bike is safe to ride 6. Don’t do anything outside your own capabilities or take unnecessary risks 7. Don’t succumb to peer pressure when riding in groups 8. Don’t ride if you feel tired or unwell
