Bahrain History

Stories passed on from the time of the Sumerians mentioned a settlement in the deserts of the Middle East - an oasis of life flowing with sweet water springs. It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden, described as “Paradise” in the world’s oldest poetic saga - The Epic of Gilgamesh. “The Sacred Land” or the “Land of Eternal Life”, previously known as ‘Dilmun’, is now known as the Kingdom of Bahrain. Early explorers also knew Bahrain as the “Island of a million palm trees”. At least twenty-three varieties of dates were grown on the Island and the leaves, branches, buds and flowers of the date palm were all used extensively. As a result of this bounty, Bahrain had its first natural export. Only Bahrain can claim a truly integral connection with the sweet-water springs that bubble off-shore, water which first attracted explorers over 2000 years ago. The numerous settlements throughout the millennia can now be seen in the rich archaeological sites around the Island. The springs also encouraged the most lustrous of pearls – the trade which helped build the Island’s early fortunes.

One of the most notable features of the archaeological heritage of Bahrain are the numerous burial mounds, sometime labeled as the world’s largest ancient cemetery, which are scattered over a wide area of Bahrain. Despite modernization and a cosmopolitan outlook, Bahrain is a unique land with fascinating culture that spans many centuries. A sense of history is tangible even today when you explore the Island’s imposing forts and atmospheric streets, or stroll through its bustling market areas and admire its many magnificent examples of Islamic architecture. While you explore, you are sure to come across another of Bahrain’s most traditional and attractive characteristics – its people, who are among the most welcoming, easy going, friendly and courteous you will meet anywhere in the Arabian Gulf. Marhaba fil Bahrain!

Concierge

KHALIL AL YAMAN Chef Concierge

What is the importance of concierge in Bahrain Tourism? It is the multi-national and world wide promotion of tourism in Bahrain with the help of our international members (4,000) around the world that makes it a crucial part of the tourism industry. It is such a pleasure to help tourism set a standard of answering questions about Bahrain, suggestions, places to visit and most importantly, lengthening a traveler’s duration of stay and ensuring their return to the island with more friends and family. During the Annual Les Clefs d’Or concierge (LCD) International Congress that includes concierges form all over the world, we have a big chance to showcase Bahrain tourism and respective hotels in Bahrain.. Brief history how concierge started The origin of the title ‘Concierge’ dates back to the time of ancient caravan stations in the deserts of North Africa and Mesopotamia. Leading through to medieval times, the kingdoms of Western Europe began constructing castles and palaces for their aristocracy. During this period, an employed attendant called ‘Comte des Cierges’ or ‘Keeper of the Candles’ appeared. This attendant was charged with caring for visiting nobles. Post medieval age, many European palaces were transformed into hotels. The palace attendant from the previous era remained and became known as the ‘Concierge’, or ‘Keeper of the Keys.’ In the 1980’s, Four Seasons was the first hotel company to introduce European-style concierge service to North America, employing Concierges company-wide and setting a new standard for hotel service in the process. The company made this a 24-hour service to accommodate the busy traveler. Main task or role of concierge in a society in general Our biggest task is to influence returning visitors in Bahrain for both corporate and leisure travelers with satisfied guest. Providing authentic meet and greet service, merging traditional and international standards. Welcome message It gives us great pleasure to collaborate with the magazine that concentrates in tourism and luxurious services that hotel Concierges can provide to visitors. Following the advice of H.E Sheikh Khaled Bin Humood Al Khalifa, we focus on involving the Bahrainis in the concierge field as no one can know better about Bahrain than they. H.E was always enthusiastic about the diversity in Bahrain, especially since the European style of the Concierge department was adapted. In the concierge department, we merge the local experience and passion for the country with the multi-cultural team. 18

The archaeological site of Bahrain Fort is one of the largest in Bahrain. Qal’at Al-Bahrain site was inscribed on the UNESCO world Heritage list in 2005, based on its outstanding cultural value. Its excavations were continued by a Danish expedition until 1962, by which time three superimposed temples had been investigated and dated around 2000 BC, at climax of the Dilmun civilization. How did you polish your culinary skills? The recipe for this is quite simple: I have been working hard for the past 26 years in the best restaurants and hotels in different countries around the world. I believe in the field of cuisine, you never finish learning and advancing yourself. What is your most used spice? I love chili, nutmeg and fresh bay leaves. In my cuisine I try to always keep food as natural as possible, spices should just enhance the natural flavor of the various ingredients. Did Bahrain inspire your culinary journey? Yes of course, very much indeed. I love all types of dates, different Arabic spices such as sumac, not to mention the traditional whole Ghouzi preparation. I really think that the Bahraini cuisine is simply magical and a true mix of different cultures. Where and when did your love for food started? It started since I was a young kid. I was addicted to watching my mother cooking all day for the family. I am confident that I got the passion for food and for my job through tasting her food every day. Who inspired you to be a chef (food geek)? For sure my mother. Her passion and attention to details, just like her delicate way of cooking is just second to none. 27

CINCO de MAYO

Romaldo Martinez Casa Mexicana Head Chef

28

Thought by some to celebrate Mexico’s Independence (that falls on September 16th), Cinco de Mayo (‘5th of May’) celebrates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. Primarily a regional holiday within Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has enjoyed increasing popularity along the Mexico/US border and in the US; it is even celebrated in Canada, the Caribbean and as far away as Australia and Japan! We sat down with Casa Mexicana Head Chef Romaldo Martinez, a native of Acapulco, and asked him a few questions.

Marhaba fil Bahrain (MfB): Chef Romaldo, how do you celebrate Cinco de Mayo? Chef Romaldo (CR): With food, of course! It’s a time of celebration so the whole family get together in the kitchen and produce wonderful dishes. There is a lot of laughter, dancing… and eating. MfB: Did you always want to be a chef? CR: I learnt to love cooking from my mother, she taught me to have a ‘delicate taste’ when cooking, and always reminded me that the freshness of ingredients is the most important factor in creating a delicious meal.

Gastronomy

MfB: Did you come to Bahrain directly from Mexico? CR: No, I’ve worked in the US, the Far East and Asia. MfB: Being so far from home, are there any traditional dishes which you will make for yourself to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo holiday? CR: Two come to mind. Menudo is a savoury soup with beef tripe, simmered in a red chili sauce. Then there is Pozole, a hearty stew made from corn, meat, tomatillos (Mexican tomato), cilantro and jalapenos. My mouth is watering, just thinking about them. MfB: How do you bring the tastes of Mexico to Bahrain? CR: Through Casa Mexicana’s menu, which is packed with favourites such as Amigo Fillets (marinated beef steaks, topped with mushrooms, cheese and served with vegetables and rice), Salpicon de Jaiba (crab and pico de gallo, topped with cheese, chili con queso and crispy breadcrumbs) and Sizzling Fajita Alejandro (beef, chicken and shrimp mixed with bell peppers, onion, tomato and spices served on a very hot griddle with a side of guacamole, sour cream and warm tortillas). Having been tempted by the delicious food at Casa Mexicana, we can confirm that it’s not just the great tastes that has first

time guests returning as regulars, but also the incredible warmth and hospitality shown by Chef Romaldo and his remarkable team.

Male and female instructors are available and there’s a merchandise shop where you can purchase a lasting mementos. Whole experience will last a minimum of 1 hour and 30 minutes. • Don’t forget to bring your booking confirmation. • Dress in an outfit that is easy to wear overalls over, trousers and t-shirts would be perfect. Shoes should be flat, lace-up and with no hooks or loose parts.

• If you have long hair, make sure to tie it back so it doesn’t obstruct your vision. • Get ready for the most amazing demonstration from your instructor, and be amazed at the acrobatics that you will be able to perform after a little bit of practice in the tunnel! • Don’t forget to keep some memories!

other activities. The competition is the shopping malls and cinemas. Convincing the people of Bahrain and her visitors to try something new and experience the exhilaration of human flight. We are an entertainment, sporting and training facility all at once. Entertainment which requires participation.

What is your expectation from the Bahrain market? The market area for this facility has been assumed as Bahrain wide, with no domestic competition and a requirement for new activities we expect to draw customers from the whole island. With much of the tourism in Bahrain deriving from the GCC visitors via the causeway the challenge will be to redirect them towards Zallaq and away from the City Centre, if only for a quick visit.

As a sport, bodyflight is very physically and mentally demanding. A sport which requires determination, hard work and a certain level of natural ability if you want to compete at some stage. In this sense we are no different to any other sports and have been lucky to receive the current female world gold medalist and other famous personalities within the sport. What sets bodyflight and Indoor Skydiving apart is that its brand new and its very cool. The dream of human flight has been one of mans since the beginning of time and now it is possible in Bahrain.

Whilst Bahrain has a relatively small population, the feeder countries of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia really allow a continuous flow of customers and visitors to Gravity given the proper marketing and advertisement. Differentiate other similar activity from Gravity Bahrain? It is very difficult for us to compare with any other activities in Bahrain as we are the first of its kind. The closest activity is most probably the F1 Go-Karting. I do not see Gravity in competition with these

Will you have other activities to offer in the future? The future will see local children’s and adult sponsorships offer, international competitions such as world championships and even theatrical shows which will make use of the entire facility. Gravity indoor Skydiving just begun to inspire the new generation on what it means to fly. 41

BAB AL BAHRAIN By: Mary Coons

Bab al Bahrain – which means Gateway of Bahrain – marks the main entrance to the Manama Souq. cultural and social experience. Be adventurous. Plan to take your time wandering the narrow streets and passageways of rows upon rows of open stalls, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself temporarily turned around. It happens to everyone. After all, that’s part of the intrigue of discovering new sights and meeting people of a foreign land; offering an ideal opportunity to converse with locals while asking for directions.

The Souq’s bustling marketplace with its traditional and contemporary shops recently completed two phases of renovation. The prime goal of the project, initiated under the directives of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, was to rebrand the Manama souq into a significant and self-sufficient urban center, according to officials, by returning the souq “back to its prominence within the daily fabric of life in Bahrain.” Whether you are interested in Arabic perfume, class A designer watches, 24-carat gold jewelry, coveted antiques and regional handicraft, or modern appliances, unusual trinkets, traditional clothing or bright colored Indian fabric, bargaining – and sometimes intense negotiating – is welcomed and expected. Don’t worry about language

barriers; English is widely spoken and understood. Although most dealers are Indian, the massive weekend crowds comprise all ethnicities and walks of life. The Gold souq, tucked away in a twostory building off of Bab al Bahrain Avenue, similar to Gold City’s jewelry is all 18K and 24K gold items. In the Middle East, 10K and 14K gold items are not considered or accepted as ‘gold’ jewelry. If pearls are more to your liking, Bahraini natural pearls are one of a kind and available here. You will not find any cultured pearls in the country; only natural – the only natural pearls in the world today – and sold by the ounce. It is illegal to bring cultured pearls into the country to sell. Visiting the souq is not just about shopping however. This is an enriching 47
