International Design Education Meeting

IDEM originated in 1985 as a meeting of educators and students from three neighboring academic programs of design: - Akademie Industrilie Vormgeving, Eindhoven, The Netherlands - Universitat Gesamthochschule, Essen, Germany - Stedelijk Hoger Instituut Visuele Kommunikatie en Vormgeving, Genk, Belgium The chief motivator, founder and participant in all IDEM workshops is designer and artist Luk van der Hallen of Belgium. In the 31 years since then, some 21 meetings took place, with increasing numbers of participating institutes in the field of Design Education. To date we have had participants from Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Austria, France, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Poland, Brazil, United States, Singapore and Israel, and workshops were held in Belgium, Italy, Norway, Holland, Germany, Slovenia, Austria, Brazil and Israel.

Based on principles of creativity and free interpretation, even the name has experienced change and variations. Beginning as “Industrial” design education meeting it soon became “International” and one point even “Experimental” meeting. A typical IDEM workshop is a week-long affair of creative exchange among students, teachers and graduates from any and all fields of design education, a really exciting happening which leaves a long lasting impression on the participants and establishes unlimited friendships. A typical delegation is 4 students and 2 teachers from each participating institute, yet this is flexible as larger and smaller delegations are accepted, keeping to a ratio of 2 students per 1 teacher. The host school selects and introduces a topic with two days of tours and lecture activities, then come three days of creative work in mixed teams, not two members from the same department in a school per team, so it is truly an international exchange. On the last day we present the results in a happy carnival atmosphere.

IDEM workshops in Israel

IDEM9

IDEM16

October 1997 was the first time that IDEM was hosted n Israel. This took place in the town of Mitzpe Ramon, located on the rim of the Ramon crater in the southern Negev desert region. In keeping with culture and tradition of desert people, the theme for IDEM9 was “Meetings”. On our way south participants were introduced to both ancient cultures and present manifestations of living in the desert. The first night we camped in the “middle of nowhere” (a million stars hotel) then the next day we reached Mitzpe Ramon by Jeeps over desert trails. Presentations on the final afternoon and evening were in open-air and all related to desert. Key phrase to remember: “Take with you only memories and leave only your footprints”.

February 2007 was our second time to host IDEM workshop (yes, mid winter) at Metzoke Dragot, on the cliffs of the Judean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. The theme for IDEM16 was “From Then”, as the region in which it took place is steeped with history. We visited a Bedouin museum, climbed to the fortress of Masada (UNESCO world heritage site) and camped overnight in the desert. Metzoke Dragot greeted us with breath taking views of the surrounding Judean Desert and the amazing Dead Sea, and with splendid hospitality. Presentations on the last day were creative expressions of links between the past and present, with reflections to the future.

IDEM21 October 2016 was the third and latest hosting of IDEM workshop (as we say: “Third time ice cream”) in Israel. After two unique meetings in desert locations (in Mitzpe Ramon,1997 & in Metzoke Dragot, 2007) we decided to host our third IDEM workshop in a completely different environment and for that we selected the Hadassah-Neurim School and Youth Village in the Hefer Valley region, located on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It is truly a lovely location. Youth villages are an original educational concept, which was started by Henrietta Szold of Germany in the 1930's, to bring youngsters from Europe without their parents, to be educated here. They became even more important after WW2 and Israel's war of independence in 1948. Today youth villages still remain special by offering good and equal education to youth from low socio-economic backgrounds and also by accepting youth from countries of the former Soviet Union. As always in IDEM meetings, first we were exposed to local issues, the nature, the agriculture, history and present living. Emek Hefer (the valley of Hefer)

is in the central coastal region of Israel. There we visited Ma’abarot, a Kibbutz communal village and its local small collections on prehistory archeology, pharmaceutical industry and military history before Israel reached statehood. Then we embarked on creative work in mixed teams, in which no two participants were from the same department/school. On these teams, teachers, students and graduates worked as equals, and were challenged to come up with new and original concepts to a theme that was kept secret until the second day. After forming the teams vis-à-vis a “treasure hunt” game, we listened to four (4) lecture presentations, which were totally unrelated to each other on topics ranging from 19th century art, innovations in 3D printing, the power of social networks, and wonders of the human brain. Only then came the theme presentation for IDEM21 and its challenge: “…ism” ... Presentations on the final day were all dedicated to inventing, defining, or creating new “…isms”, or in other words ideas or ideals to guide us in the future.

The first ever Dataism performance was in IDEM21. It was a playful yet serious contrast between the rational world of data and the paradox and poetic outcomes of artistic (ab)use of highly complex every day tools. The installation transformed a random word (“imprisonment”) in an acoustic cluster as a live performance, with sound of a 3d Printer, a Phone call, Morse code, Numerology, Mandarin pictograms, and numbers that were transformed as sheet music. This was played on a smart phone piano app, read sheet music, cmyk adaption, a color animation and more. After the audience adding their own live sounds via smart phones, arose a multilayered “sound cloud”.

“Malus" (Latin for "wrong”) + "Albert" (Albert Einstein) = "Wrong Albert" (Found in the magazine New Scientist) The word describes the many false quotes attributed to Albert Einstein, mostly on the internet. M albertism is our willingness to believe unproven “facts”. Unable to check or prove information which we find on the internet, we tend to believe and quote as “facts”, without actually knowing if they are true. And we are even delighted if they suit our needs…

Nowadays people tend to segregate and isolate themselves from others and from society. To encourage human sharing and interaction, ideas for several products have been proposed. To encourage sharing a bench in the park, it will be designed as a seesaw with one side weighed down. So you need to have a few people sitting together on the other side for balance. The telephone charging plug is proposed to be only half a plug. So for charging the battery, two persons need to join their half-plugs in order to make a whole one. Dining plates on opposite sides of the table are linked on a rocking curved base. Eating would therefore need to be at the same pace, or one plate will automatically elevate to uncomfortable height.

Exhibitionism is a series of shows by the Antique Museum of Ancient isms (AMAI). Antique forms of presentation are used to look backon yesterday’s practices between the borders of current thinking. The collections, installations, photographs, documents and movies from “museums” all over the world will open the wide range of moods, manners, and manifestos of the 20 th and 21 st centuries.

Sharing a feeling with each other is something that we all have in common as human beings. No matter where we came from, what is our culture or our gender, we all have the ability to share the same moments and feelings. While in the past we used to share things in real life, today we share most of the things on social media. In our project we wanted to create a moment that we can all share, not only in the physical way by touching, but also in the social way by open a bottle of beer and drinking together.

The --- TRASHIST --MANIFESTO TRASHISM NOW! WE ARE THE JUNK JUNKIES WE HAVE LUST FOR DUST AND RUST WE GET HIGH ON TRASH TRASH IS THE NEW HASH JOIN US ON OUR TRASHURE HUNT TRASH IS MORE! WASTE NO WASTE! TRASHISM NOW!

From the original Trashist movement, quite quickly an extremist and anarchistic branche of loud fundamentalists evolved. A lot of Trashists though felt that there was a need for a more positive story. They wanted a more solution focused approach, a movement that would design sustainable waste solutions rather than loudly declaim vague oneliners during silly protest marches. Powerism was born. The first Powerist project was a re-usable hi-tech battery shaped drinking bottle that communicates with environment and body sensors to let the owner know when it is time to hydrate her or his body. A business model was developed that should allow people to have access to free drinking water - no unnecessary luxury in a time where poverty and water shortage are closely related.

Funism should inspire joy in the lives of people. It's about trying to make the world a happier place. It's an ideology. It's a philosophy. It’s a religion – or it’s just fun. We do not think that there are no problems in the world. But we force funism to provide a better world, we use it as a communication tool that connects people by mixing different kinds of drinks prepared by different people. Shake it and mix it with our FUNMACHINE and you will reach a new quality of communication between people. Just do it !
