BRIEF 02: Eureka Editorial

BRIEF To produce a range of cover and editorial illustrations for the Times’ science supplement, Eureka.

You will also need to provide a range of double page spreads that would accompany the cover visuals.

Eureka tends to highlight the importance of science in contemporary society, how could you promote this within the restrictions set?

Background/Considerations Eureka is reknown for it’s striking contemporary design and visuals, how will you accomplish this?

The supplement tends to deal with information heavy stories focused on obscure and often complex ideas that need to be explained well with both text and image, how will you accomodate this? The supplement tends to favour bold, desaturated imagery with vector illustrations coupled with photographs, what sort of visual approach will direct the brief?

How will you promote the importance of the subject matter?

Mandatory Requirements Must adhere to Eureka’s design specifications.

Must use fonts nearest to or to the exact specifications used within the existing publication.

Must cover at least 5 themes/subjects that would interest the audience.

BRIEF 01: 2920: Last Year of the First Era

BRIEF To produce the in game book 2920: Last Year of the First Era from the popular Elder Scrolls’ franchise.

To produce a range of deliverables that can accompany the book as well as suitable packaging for the entire edition.

Background/Considerations The Elder Scrolls’ fictional lore is revered by critics and fanboys alike, how far will you push the design away from what is already out there but without losing the interest of the audience?

You will need to know the content and lore of the series inside out before you tackle the brief, so get reading! What sort of deliverables are feasible to produce in the time available and what sort of deliverables would a fanboy be ready to pay for?

Mandatory Requirements Must produce a perfect bound book with the content of 2920.

Must look as though it could fit into the fictional realm of Tamriel, whilst serving as a piece of good design.

Must use traditional processes to produce deliverables due to the nature of the brief’s context.

BRIEF 03: Code Magazine

BRIEF To produce a range of publications that focus on the contemporary side of gaming. The contributors range from professional cult icons and the target audience themselves.

Background/Considerations The focus of the content is on the aesthetics of gaming and how gaming culture is celebrated throughout the subculture; exhibitions, illustrators, designers, celebrities (not Cheryl Cole more Dara O Briain) and reviews. The publication aims to give gamers and non gamers a window to view gaming outside the console, how will you go about presenting this?

The current gaming marketplace is saturated with publications on the subject already, so how will you go about making the content unique and accesible?

What sort of feature could you include to put emphasis on the overarching concept (games as art and functioning aesthetic/ interactive storytelling)

Mandatory Requirements Content must be sourced independently and contain no commercial advertising of any sort.

Must include designers and illustrators to increase buyability to target audience.

BRIEF 04: Jenny Sneap Branding

BRIEF To create an identity and relevant promotional materials for the photographer, Jenny Sneap.

Background/Considerations Jenny’s work tends to be situated in a public context: gig venues, exhibitions, shop fronts, performance art and shows. She puts emphasis on interactivity and collaborating with young, talented individuals in order to get the most out of her work, how would you reflect this in your deliverables?

What sort of deliverables could she benefit from for promotion?

How would her lookbook differ from other photographers and how would the interaction with it help promote her and her work?

Mandatory Requirements Must create a logo, and relevant promotional materials.

Must have consistency with the application of her logo.

BRIEF 05: Bottom of the Bottle

BRIEF To produce a range of type treatments as branding for Harrogates metal night of the same name.

To produce and propose a range of illlustrations to be used for posters and be able to be applied to a range of media/products.

The visuals must be able to correspond with the night’s seasonal events.

Background/Considerations The night itself is popular enough, but it needs a makeover. The night prides itself on being the only alternative club night in town, but it needs to show this, what sort of visuals do you think would produce the best results for the audience?

Most of the night’s attendees know what sort of music is played and what to expect, so how do you portray a sense of exclusivity within the night itself?

What sort of imagery does the audience react to? How will your work reach them?

Mandatory Requirements Visuals must be limited to a strict colour palette as a way of keeping visual uniformity. Each seasonal event must be illustrated, although not strictly represented.

Each type treatement must be different for each seasonal event.
