Bookbinders: responses
I have already been and visited the facilities at Spink & Thackray, had a word with Graham who runs the workshop and have confirmed that they do not do leatherbound books, which is unfortunately, the main service I required. This in mind, they are so far the cheapest and quickest in terms of turnaround and production. They offer custom foil blocks for about ÂŁ30 with a 2/3 day turnaround. ABout 3 days for a book to be produced as well which is reassuring.
I have only recently called this company for a quote, although their work seemed incredibly professional, with a huge range of materials including leather and goat skin ranges, it seems as though the turnaround time of up to 10 days seems far too long, especially with the time limit left. The quote itself was a tad bit more expensive than I imagined, but could be an option depending on the outcome of the crit.
Another recent contact, York Bookbinding, looks amazing, exactly on the money and just waiting to hear back from them to estimate a quote. Their services are more tailored to individual/specialist binding and production, with an emphasis on high quality outcomes rather than long run litho processes. Hopefully this will bear more fruit.
Heard back from these guys yesterday, and offer a decent service, although have no real examples to speak of on their site which worries me, however, I will be asking if I could pop in hopefully over the weekend to see if I can have a nosy around.
Heard back from Crawford and gave Andy a ding to confirm a few things, alas if only I had more interest in the book, then I could do a short run production of it and cut the overall cost considerably. Still good practice and the guy kept on insisiting that I come visit him to talk design and prices. Basically, their digital printing costs are 10p per B+w page, 20p colour. The ÂŁ57 pound margin did not include the custom block which would cost round about ÂŁ50-ÂŁ100. DAMNIT.
