Deliverables

To rebrand and design a series of promotional print-driven solutions for “Harrogate’s only rock night”... Bottom of the Bottle.

The town has always had a history of rock and blues heritage with both Montey’s and the ever popular Blue’s Bar hosting gig nights.

- 15 Posters that can be translated into flyers.

The image of the night is represented by means of photoshopped low-resolution posters in the club, Rehab.

Using a grungy, punk, handmade approach to the overall project will help to make the club night stand out more and has potential to sell merchandise to help support the night as a whole.

The audience is young, between 18-30 and features the only alternative club night in the town. The place is covered through media: photography and posted on social media sites.

- 10 examples of merchandise: + Hoodie + T shirt + Sticker + Badges - Website, functioning. Semi animated.

Possibly a limited colour palette due to the current specifications of current posters. The imagery should be able to translate into smaller formats as well as create an identity that ties in well with the website.

1/The Brief.

First drafts, rough ideas.

2/Custom Typefaces

Out of the three typefaces with a bold stroke, I would say that this would be the most legible and logical to take forward. If I am to make a family out of this I will need to have a range.

Not so successful as it would not be readable nor legible. Meter limit 8.

A good idea for another custom typeface for the brief, but not sure that the specifications are suitable.

Not at all. Does not suit it or look natural due to the structure of the type.

Vectored off the original sketches.

Tampering.

2/Custom Typefaces

Up close and personal, still have to create glyphs but good enough to start messing around with imagery.

2/Custom Typefaces

First try with just using my tablet and one brush setting. No pressure setting, just proportional. Not looking very promising, considering that the overall concept is a handrendered grunge look.

2/Custom Typefaces

Nothing applied.

The bold stroke does make it stand out more. I got inspiration from the same mark a sharpie makes on paper.

Transform tool to make squatter. Not bad but not sure about overall impact. I messed around with this variation on the other page.

2/Custom Typefaces

Too thick, cant read some of the letters. I don’t think its worth exploring further.

Thought this looked better when I was doing it. Still I think if the stems were sharper and pointed it could work.

2/Custom Typefaces

Looking much better but needs some padding out to make it stand out from the bold colours and manic strokes. This was just vectored around the original sketch. Needs to be a tad more consistent, but it reads well.

2/Custom Typefaces

Initial sketches. Quick turnaround to demonstrate what sort of visual style is being applied.

This was a result of just using the graphics tablet to get some practice using brishes, strokes and to generally steady my hand. These still need to be developed further but I think it’s a good starting point.

Colour

The illustrative qualities of the typeface aids the concept behind the brief. The concept being a punk/grunge theme with bold contrasting colours with a limited colour palette. This is due to the way the posters are printed and ditributed, since they cost quite alot when commercially sourced from the local area.

Illustration style I wanted to be entirely driven by messing around with different brush strokes/styles. I did nab a few packs off a few sites/blogs, but messed around with the settings and appearance to make them my own. The grungy effect works well, but I think I should explore more detailed and less conceptual imagery as it risks going stale.

Overall, the colour palettes were taken from other designers and illustrators work. *See my context posts* However it is not stealing ideas, merely since I am terrible at choosing colours to print, but instead can see what the colours look like in print (in a book) and make an informed decision.

Still in development stages but a start that could end with multiple results. Depending on how far I want to push them and if it is suitable for the brief. Although I have not developed typefaces before and would be a highly beneficial excercise to buff out my skills and my personal practice.

The nature of the illustrations are in context with the holidays they represent. As I get more information, I will expand and develop them further. For the time being I will be using what I have to see what sort of merchandise/ copy would work well across a website and what sort of layout would translate my current assets.

The colour choices are in no way definite, but something limited is the direction it must take due to production costs and negotiations with my client. It wont be paid work I am told, but I still see it as a great way to get myself seen and heard.
