Funds urgently needed for disabled Burgau boy Diego’s family don’t get any support from the Portuguese Government and are struggling to buy the specialist equipment that he needs. Campaigners are trying to raise money to buy Diego a new disabled pushchair which costs about 5,000 euros. They also want to raise money to help his grandmother, Irene, to modify her bathroom. Natasha Seromenho, who runs the Esquina Restaurant in Burgau where Irene works at night, is spearheading the fundraising efforts. Natasha said: “Diego’s Cerebral Palsy is severe. He cannot hold his head up, cannot stand etc and up until now the doctors have been unable to say whether he may walk in the future.

An appeal has been launched to raise money for a severely disabled toddler from Burgau. Two-year-old Diego Messias Pedrosa, who is being brought up by his grandmother, has Cerebral Palsy.

“He will be three later this year and cannot talk although makes a few sounds which suggest he is trying to although only time will tell,” she added. She said that Diego was a very happy little boy although added that he did have to

spend quite a lot of time in hospital and had recently spent two weeks in Portimão Hospital because he had a cold and subsequently had breathing difficulties especially at night time which meant he needed to be given oxygen. Diego’s medication alone costs €80 per month and the equipment he needs is not only to ensure that Diego is safe and comfortable but also to aid Irene with dayto-day activities that we take for granted like bathing and feeding. If you would like to make a donation the PayPal address: natasha.seromenho@hotmail.com (only used for donations for Diego). For those of you who don't use PayPal. IBAN: PT50 0033 0000 45464443007 05 and swift BCOMPTPL. Bank is Millennium BCP. People can also donate cash at Esquina Restaurant in Burgau.

Welcome to our June edition

Useful Numbers

Well, here we are half-way into the year and Lagos is once again preparing for a large increase in numbers as tourists start to arrive all over the Algarve. We at Tomorrow are all very excited about the Masquerade Summer Ball on June 20th at the Tivoli Hotel. If you would still like a ticket, please check availability by emailing: tickets@lagossummerball.com because there may be one or two tickets still available. Our next big charity event is the Espiche Golf Day on September 20th. Last year with the help of sponsors, Espiche golf club and the ‘Ray of Light Trust’ we raised thousands of euros for local charity and we expect to better that this year – with your help and support. Please make a note in your diaries, the Tomorrow Christmas Ball will be at the Boavista on December 11th with the Protons - a really great group who will keep you on your feet way into the small hours. We are also really delighted to be able to confirm that we will be lighting many of the Avenida palm trees this Christmas with the help of the Câmara and many of our supporters who we expect to sponsor a tree. We had a suggestion for readers to write and advise us of any particularly excellent restaurants they have enjoyed so please write to our editor, Amber: amber@tomorrowalgarve.com with your ideas.

shows and in 1985 won the Cavan International song contest with his song ‘The forgotten of Dublin’. As with all his work, this one has lyrics with significance. It concerns a young boy playing the harmonica on the streets of Dublin and then found dead, having succumbed to the cold. Have all his songs got a message? “I don’t presume to give a message as such,” Ephy is quick to point out, “But when certain things touch me, I just have to write about it.”

By Lena Strang

Ephy at the Irish Arts Theatre with backing band

Singing to the Pope in front of an audience of 350,000, flying a microlight from England to Portugal, attending a Masquerade Ball in Venice and hearing his own song being played there… These are just a few of the accomplishments of Ephy Clarke, an Irish musician and composer, now residing in the Algarve. Where do I begin? Perhaps an explanation of how anyone gets to sing for the Pope? In his easy, jovial manner, speaking in a strong southern Irish accent, Ephy is happy to oblige. Born in Drogheda, 20 km north of Dublin, he has always been involved with music, playing in a number of bands and achieving fame in Ireland early on. “On his visit to Ireland in 1979, Pope John Paul II came to Drogheda as this was the best venue to unite people in both the

south and the north,” he says, “And along with the ‘Fury Brothers’ who were well known at the time, I was asked to perform.” Ephy becomes increasingly animated. It’s obviously an experience that means a lot to him. I sang an Irish song, ‘The Mountains of Mourne’. I can still picture in my mind the hundreds of thousands of people swaying to the music and singing along. It was incredible.” As a young man at the time he tended to question everything, including religion, but the event made an impact. “I felt it was an honour. The Pope presented me with a rosary and a medal with the papal insignia which I passed on to my mother.” No doubt, the proudest mother in the whole of Ireland. He continued to perform and compose music, appeared on a variety of television

And this was certainly the case with a song that he dedicated to the Penlee Life boat disaster of 1981 when so many lives were lost in a rescue operation off the coast of Cornwall. “I recorded the song and was invited to play a concert in Penzance. It was a humbling experience meeting the families of the men who had given their lives so readily to save others.” Having moved to England with his young family in 1988, other commitments assumed centre stage. As head of procurement for an American computer firm, he found himself travelling to all corners of the world. An offer from Sony to do an album at the time had to be put on hold. “It broke my heart but I knew I had to concentrate on my full time job and my family.”

Community... The hiatus of 15 years in his music career brought him to the Algarve. He has always had a fascination with flying, having done some hang gliding while a student in Ireland. “I was taking microlight lessons in Kent but the weather was unpredictable. I was told I could do my training in the Algarve where it is possible to fly every day.” He contacted Gerry Breen at the Algarve Airsports Centre in Lagos, did the training and hasn’t looked back since. Not long after obtaining his licence, he flew a microlight from the UK to Portugal for a cancer charity and a few years later flew one across the United States. I get the distinct impression that Ephy doesn't do things by half. His fate with the Algarve was sealed. He and his family continued to spend all their holidays here and bought a house with the intention of settling permanently. “Things finally came together and last year was the right time to make the move.” Lagos was the place that appealed to them most “being the best of all worlds, with great facilities without being too commercialized. A home from home.” The family has settled down well and his youngest daughter is doing well at a local school. I still have one more burning question for Ephy. The Masquerade Ball in Venice? Both Ephy and his wife Isabella assure me that attending the ball was a once in a lifetime experience. Ephy, through his frequent business trips to northern Italy decided to visit Venice some years ago and then returned for several long weekends with Isabella. The setting and the whole ambience of the city made such an impression on him that he wrote a song called ‘Venetian Masquerades’. He recorded the song and sent it to Antonia Sautter, the organizer of ‘Ballo del Dodge’, one of the major masquerade balls in Venice.

Isabella and Ephy Clarke with Antonia Sautter

A veritable whirlwind followed. “We had an invite for the ball in February 2008. We flew to Venice the day before, had our costumes fitted and attended the most extraordinary ball you can imagine.” Both Ephy and Isabella try to explain the almost surreal, fantastical atmosphere of Venice with people wandering around in masks and elaborate medieval costumes along with the reception at the sumptuous palace that awaited them in the evening. “We arrived by gondola at the 15th century ‘Palazzo Pisani Moretta’ on the Grand Canal and climbed the steps that led to the two arched doorways of the palace. We were greeted by jesters on stilts and mingled with other guests dressed in outlandish costumes.” Since 1994, Antonia Sautter, an Italian period costume designer, has been organising one of the most exclusive masquerade balls in Venice. Each has a particular theme and this year it was ‘The Garden of Delight”. And a delight it certainly was according to Ephy. “The surroundings were sumptuous. We had a meal of the best of Venetian cuisine and watched an elaborate Cirque du Soleil type entertainment. It all defies words.” And yes, he felt very honoured when his song ‘Venetian Masquerades’ was played in the perfect setting. continued on page 6 >>

Christina Has Walked The Walk!

an online diary on her Fatimacharitywalk Facebook page. The money Christina raised will go to the poor children of Aljezur, specifying that she wanted to help a deserving LOCAL cause. We’ll let you how much she raised next month.

>> Continued from page 4 I was interested to discover that the Venetian Carnival is believed to have its origins in 1162 celebrating a particularly glorious military victory with dance and merriment in San Marco Square. Wearing masks became popular in the next few centuries as a way of hiding your identity in a society divided by social class. However, it apparently gave rise to much undesirable behaviour. It was not unheard of for masked men to pay unscheduled visits to female monasteries or for card games to be won in suspect circumstances by players in disguise. In 1797 it was deemed necessary to outlaw the practice of wearing masks. The Italian government reinstituted the Masquerade Ball in 1979. It has now become an iconic event, attracting millions of visitors each year. When I ask Ephy how he thinks Tomorrow’s Masked Ball in June will compare, his response is emphatic. “Yes, everything is to scale. But it is all about creating atmosphere and having a good time. As the ball is for charity it is for a very good purpose too”. The evocative tunes of ‘Venetian Masquerades’ will be heard once more, adding poignancy to the event. He is continuing to make his mark on the music scene. He was able to complete his overdue album ‘Heaven’s Over Here’ some years ago and is currently in the process of compiling his second album. Songs that he had written with Isabella for the 100th Anniversary of WW1 were recorded and broadcast by the BBC on Christmas Day with a CD to follow, featuring two of the songs. And as Ephy Clarke has now settled in the Algarve, I don’t think it is the last we have heard of him here either.

Fourteen days after setting off on her 240mile marathon charity walk from Cape St Vincent, West Algarve resident Christina Vandermeulen arrived in Fatima—one day ahead of schedule! Christina, 61 and from Belgium, decided to make this personal pilgrimage to raise funds for the poor children of Aljezur. It was an ambitious project as it meant walking a distance of 397km (240 miles) as the crow flies, or anything up to 450km (270 miles) depending on any variations or detours along the route she mapped out, passing through Odeceixe, Sines, Setubal, Lisbon and Santarém. Algarve Network for Families in Need By Alison Webster This last month we have been very busy collecting and re-distributing in the Lagos area. Clothes have been given to struggling mums at the soup kitchen in Lagos. Many items of clothing and toys have been taken to the orphanage in Lagos. Espiche, Bensafrim and Odiáxere old people's homes have been given clothes, bedding, crockery and Christmas decorations. Three single mums in Odiáxere who all work but are on very low wages have been given clothes for their children, as well as a microwave, small oven and video player. The manager of the Espiche and Bensafrim home emailed me with a request for specific items. I am certain that Odiáxere, Barão São João and Vila do Bispo homes have similar needs.

Walkin’ Sagres with Ana Carla Cabrita By Lena Strang How did the idea of conducting nature tours around Sagres come about? When I was trekking in Patagonia I felt very much connected with the surroundings. I was always afraid of what mass tourism could do to Sagres and thought these kinds of nature tours would be an alternative.

Carla guiding a group. Photo by Pat and David

The Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina is a protected area of outstanding beauty. Anyone visiting the coastline cannot help but be impressed by the awesome views over the cliffs and the never-ending stretches of sandy beaches. But there is much more to the Natural Park than that. Covering an area of 74,000 hectares and 80 km of coastline it is rich in history with evidence of occupation dating back to prehistoric times. It is also home to a rich fauna and flora with species that are unique to this part of the world. The cliffs are a favourite stopping off point for migrating birds and an ideal nesting ground. There is much to see and explore but how do you get the most out of a visit? Ana Carla Cabrita, a local nature guide for Walkin’ Sagres is on hand to help. She is keen for the natural beauty and integrity of the region to be maintained but also wants to share with others. Lena Strang had a few questions for her. Walking in the Natural Park. Photo by Ricardo Soares

You managed to set up your own business here? It was difficult and involved a very long process from my initial dream 10 years ago. To begin with the law didn't permit one person to set up a business without a huge financial investment. Six years ago this was changed but there were still lots of procedures to follow but I didn’t give up! How is Walkin’ Sagres different from other tour companies? It’s the desire to preserve the area. I use the words ‘sustainability’ and ‘quality’ and really believe in the ideas. Money is not my main goal. I don’t accept groups of 30 -40 in the Natural Park. I only have small numbers and also do walks, free of charge, for local people and schools. It’s important to have awareness of ones own area and the need to preserve it. What’s a typical tour like? Each walk is different because people are different. I don’t deliver a set speech but talk about nature, history and local culture. The main idea is to let the senses rule and be taken in by the tranquility of the surroundings. The same walk might take 2 ½ hours or 5, depending on the group. That’s why I only do one tour a day. And you run tours all year round? Yes, the main season is from March until mid June and from mid September until November. This year I have a lot of bookings for small family groups in August though.

If a couple or a family on holiday in the Algarve would like to go on a tour, what should they do? Phone or email at least two days before. We talk and decide on the route. If they’re in Sagres I pick them up at the hotel. If it's further away we arrange a meeting point. I need to know their personal details so I can arrange insurance and be aware of any medical issues. Each tour has to be tailor made. You were born in Sagres, weren’t you? Yes, I was born in the most beautiful place in the world! I know every single place where I guide. They’re all connected with childhood memories Carla guiding a group. Photo by José Baptista

Future plans? Thinking of expanding your business? No, that’s not what I want to do. I love being out in nature and interacting with others. I intend to do more work with local schools. I would like youngsters to feel and live with the beauty and safety I grew up with. Do you have a message for readers of ‘Tomorrow’? Please, ask for quality. Let the tourist boards know how important it is to keep places like Costa Vicentina untouched. And of course, enjoy our food, traditions and what is unique and different here! http://www.walkinsagres.com/walkin Facebook: Walkin’ Sagres

Circles of empowerment

Bridge delay

The founder of the Women and Success Project, Ria van Doorn, is calling on business women to join the Circles of Empowerment. A Circle of Empowerment is a small, facilitated group of women that come together once a month, dedicated to support and growth. Lagos Câmara has confirmed that there has been a delay in re-opening the D. Maria Bridge by Pingo Doce. The bridge had been due to re-open this month but it will now be ready for use in July, according to a Câmara spokeswoman.

These circles are for self-aware, successful women from all ages and backgrounds who are starting and growing businesses; redefining their roles and impact as leaders and dreaming and developing new worlds for all of us.

Construction work by a Spanish company started on the bridge started last September.

Dive deep By Chris Hansen

A new bridge is being superimposed on the old structure, some of which dates back to Roman times. The old deck is being demolished, pillars are being reinforced and a new deck spanning the bridge is being constructed. Additionally, wastewater pipelines and telecommunications infrastructures are being repositioned underneath. The bridge will accommodate motorised traffic with generous space on both sides for pedestrians and bicycles. There will be sufficient space to create an additional lane, if necessary. The project costing €870,044 (+VAT) is funded by the EU to the tune of 65% and the rest by the municipality. The date of the construction of the original bridge is not certain but there are traces of Romanesque features. Early references to the bridge is made by Henrique Fernandes Sarrão in his book ‘The History of the Algarve Kingdom” around 1600. Restoration work was completed in 1618. After having been extensively damaged in the earthquake of 1755, it was reconstructed in 1783 by Captain General Conde de Rezende, with the addition of two decks and a commemorative plaque. In November 1805 three of the arches were destroyed by a flood, with subsequent restoration work lasting until 1807. Further work was completed between 1958 and 1960. The commemorative plaque was removed and kept in Lagos Municipal Museum.

Portugal and the Algarve in particular, has a rich history when it comes to the sea. The Age of Discovery where Portuguese ships explored the globe in the early 15th century put the country on the world map as one of the great empires of the time. In that tradition, Portugal is using the sea to invest in its future. The Ocean Revival Project is the first undertaking of its kind. It is unique in that four ex-navy vessels have been sunk in the same area to create one of the largest underwater reefs in the world. The 85m long destroyer; Oliveira e Carmo, the 102m long frigate; Hermenegildo Capelo, the 62m long hydrographic vessel; Almeida Carvalho and the 44m long gunboat; Zambeze are the four ships that have made up this project. The plan was to create not only an artificial reef, but also to create a marine reserve that would allow depleted fish stocks a chance to replenish. At the end of October 2012 a series of loud bangs startled the few remaining beach goers that were still out after the summer season and most likely made a couple of nearby golfers miss their putt. These bangs were the sound of the first two ships being sunk to put the project underway.

For five months a circle will meet monthly with Ria as a trained facilitator, guiding the group through transformational themes, designed for like-minded women taking the leap to create lives of deep meaning and impact. Introduction workshop for the next circle is on June 2nd from 6.30pm to 9.30pm and costs € 20. For information on how to sign up for the introduction workshop, please send an email to riavandoorn@mac.com or visit www.riavandoorn.com

Fishing has been banned in the Ocean Revival Park and as a result marine life has boomed. Spiny European lobsters stalk the gloomy, deserted corridors of these once proud war machines, the shoals of bream, sea bass and sardines have moved in, octopus have set up camp in the many nooks and crannies that shipwrecks like these offer and trigger fish now patrol the superstructures and top decks. Marine life is not the only thing that has benefited from these wrecks; the local scuba diving industry has seen a surge as well. As the news gets out about the Ocean Revival Park, the area is seeing more and more divers making the trip out to the sunny Algarve to experience this world class dive site. It is a truly amazing thing to see such a forward thinking project go ahead. It is even better to see machines that were engineered to create death re purposed to create such an abundance of life. Chris Hansen is one of the owners and master instructors at Dive Time so if you fancy giving diving a try go to www.dive-time.net/en

Help support a speed skating star 5. How do you fund these competitions? For the European competitions I have to raise my own funds. 6. How do you get sponsorship? I try to arrange sponsors from local people I know and small local businesses. 7. How much would it help you to get sponsorship and what are you looking for our readers to do? If I could arrange a sponsor I could compete in more stages of the European Cup and gain more experience for future challenges. If any readers could help me that would be fantastic. If any readers were to show an interest in helping me they can email the magazine who will pass the info on to me.

Sixteen-year-old Diogo Casimiro from Lagos is on a speed skating mission. His ambition is to compete in the World Championships one day but is looking for financial support to drive his dream. Here he tells us how he got into speed skating and his ambitions for the future.

8. What are your ambitions for the future? In the future, putting aside any financial limitations, I hope to continue doing what I love the most with the dream of one day competing in the World Championship.

Party for orphanage supporters The children’s home in Lagos is hosting its big annual party Arraial de São João to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped and supported them. When I was three I went to see the annual speed skating championship with my father. It takes place every year here in Lagos. I told my father I would really love to learn to skate too so he signed me up. 3. What do you like about inline speed skating? The thing I like most about speed skating is the speed and adrenaline rush. Secondly I like the travelling to compete in other countries and the comradeship with other skaters internationally. 4. Do you compete internationally? If so, please tell us about your previous successes and forthcoming competitions. Yes I compete internationally. In 2013 at my first European championship my relay team came 4th. In 2014 I competed in the biggest international tournament and came 19th. This year I am planning to compete in Austria (in June) and Belgium (in August) for the European cup.

NECI appeal

Lagos Railway Museum

The local charity NECI which helps people with learning difficulties and physical disabilities has launched an appeal to raise €18,000 to help build a cover to link the school with its new residential block.

Resident that despite the museum’s importance there just isn’t enough money to reopen it.

The day centre and the sleeping block are next to each other but there is a 30 metre distance between the two but the gap has proved to be a problem during rainy spells as students constantly need to go between the two buildings. NECI staff want to link the buildings with colourful mosaic fabric option that should certainly brighten the place up and have negotiated a special price with Oz Shades whose shade sail technology also allows to provide waterproof cover. If you would like to make a donation please, use the following bank account: Montepio Geral: 0036 0179 99100036906 19

A NECI spokeswoman said they would like to thank the international community for all of their generosity. At the end of April 1,500 euros was raised by Algarve Triathlons and funds from a craft fair held at the Fortaleza da Luz restaurant by Luc St John Webb and Sandie Croft were also donated to NECI. The spokeswoman said she also wanted to thanks Zoomarine for inviting all of NECI’s clients for a fabulous day out!

Last month one of the local newspapers featured a story about a museum in Lagos which contained some of Portugal’s oldest and rarest trains which had been left abandoned. The story said that the authorities were too cash-strapped to open the museum back up to the public. The museum is next to the town’s railway station and the building – which is almost 100 years old – has been left to go to wrack and ruin. We know that it has caused a lot of concern over the years to residents and we wondered whether it was something that people would like to get together about to see if we can make a difference.

She explained her foundation is “in the final stages” of renovating a much larger museum in Entroncamento, which will be the country’s “largest, featuring many engines”.

The roof of the museum was recently renovated but the outside has been daubed with graffiti, and its two Manchester-built Beyer Peacock engines, dating back to the 1890s, are being left to gather dust. The building had been part of a rail yard for the town’s old train station that opened in the 1920s before being converted into a museum. She told the newspaper that the Lagos’ abandoned space was not on the list of priorities. But obviously for those of us that live here, it should be a priority. We have already spoken to the Mayor of Lagos about it and will be having another meeting to discuss it this month. There have been some rumours about a possible collaboration between the council and the FMNF but these are unconfirmed. Before our meeting with the council we would like to hear from anyone who has any ideas to bring the museum back to life or anyone who might be keen to work on a campaign with us. ‘Compassionate and loving’ – friends pay tribute spreading love and kindness. This must be continued by all those who are heartbroken by her death. The quote will be ‘What would Di do?’

Di with her friends Sian, Shelagh and Nigel. Di is on the right of the photo

Tragically on the day of the Luz Triathlon one of the participants, Diane Thomas, died after she lost consciousness during the swim. We would like to express our condolences to her family and friends. Here is a tribute to Diane from her friends Sian Griffiths and Tim Hoy. Diane Thomas (Di) was a beautiful, fit and youthful 57-year-old woman with an almost permanent smile on her face; nothing was ever too much trouble for her. She radiated joy. On Thursday April 23rd, Di left Willesden in London where she lives with her family to travel with, some might say crazy, friends, Sian, Shelagh and Nigel, to Portugal to take part in the second Praia da Luz Triathlon in the Algarve. All were excited to be taking part and also looking forward to a long weekend in a sunny location with Portuguese cuisine. The triathlon, which was Di’s first, was on the morning of Saturday 25th April. The swim was the first leg and Di and her friends had entered the shorter Sprint triathlon which has a 750m swim. Di was a very fit and very competent swimmer (cyclist and runner too) who regularly swam in open water, ponds, lakes and the sea, often in winter in the UK, so to be in a beautiful bay in Portugal in mild temperatures was a breeze. However, about 10 minutes into the swim, Di suddenly and unexpectedly rolled onto her back and lost consciousness. Sian, who is a trained lifeguard and retired London firefighter, was swimming with her and immediately got help from the rescue crews. Sian initiated CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) on the rescue boat and that continued onto the beach and into the intensive care unit at Portimão Hospital. Despite the best efforts of all those who

helped that day, Diane never recovered consciousness. The doctors at the hospital tried their very best but very sadly Di passed away several hours later. They believed the cause to be neurological but this has yet to be confirmed and the suddenness explained. As you can imagine, all who were with Di or witnessed this incident were massively shocked and overwhelmingly saddened. It’s one of the worse things that can happen. In all the sorrow that descends when a loved one passes there is some comfort in the small things, things to be grateful for, such as the following; • Di’s passing was quick and peaceful, she was unaware it was happening, she didn’t suffer. • Di was doing something she loved, swimming, in a beautiful location with people that loved her. • Di saw lots of dolphins swimming in the bay that morning. • The last thing she ate was a pastel de nata on the sea front – one of her most favourite things to eat, amongst many. • Di had been able to say goodbye to all her family before she left for the Algarve on Thursday 23 April because they were all home, which is not always the case. Kisses and hugs all-round, she was able to express her unconditional love of them. • When it happened she wasn’t alone, there was help to hand. Despite being in Portugal, English was spoken, medical professionals attended quickly and there was efficiency & kindness shown. • The triathlon organisers were wonderful, caring and patient and did all they could in an awful situation. Especially Donna who drove like a demon and attended the hospital with Di’s friends Sian, Shelagh and Nigel, who were obviously distraught. • Finally, despite her premature passing, Diane, undisputedly, left a magnificent legacy of living life to the very full and

Di leaves behind a really wonderful family, her partner of over 30 years, John O’Brien, her daughter Beth (23) and son Tom (21). It goes without saying they are completely devastated. Di was such a huge part of so many people’s lives but for her family she was not only that, she was also their rock. In their grief they are determined to be strong and keep Di’s legacy alive. Di worked in the NHS for over 40 years, more recently as a senior manager but she started her career as a nurse and midwife. She spent her whole life helping people, spreading her kind-heartedness. Everyone who met her loved her. She was a compassionate, loving and enthusiastic person, with a huge lust for life. Not only has she left behind her family and friends but also a long list of adventures still to be completed. Her family and friends hope to complete them on her behalf. Di’s funeral was held on May 15th 2015 and was attended by hundreds of family and friends from all over the world who’d come to gather and pay their respects. Lots of grown men, women and children crying unashamedly and paying some really honest and beautiful tributes to their local wonder woman. It goes without saying that Di will be sorely missed; hers is a huge gap to fill. But even with her loss she is still making an impact. She always supported a good cause and many, many charities, but two in particular were her favoured ones. Only on the Friday before the triathlon she ironically said ‘I must find an event to raise money for my favourite charities’. So if there is something positive to come out of this, Di’s passing will help these two charities. St Luke’s Hospice and the Royal Free Hospitals Quiet Cancer Therapy Appeal. The second one researches into the sort of cancer Tom, Di’s son, had but was cured of, five years ago. Here’s a link here for those interested in also supporting these excellent charities. http://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/ displaySomeoneSpecialPage. action?pageUrl=DianeThomas

Nandi appeal

WW2 Veteran Attends VE Day 70th Anniversary Celebration

For the past 18yrs the Nandi Charity has helped thousands of animals have a better life. They provide the income for spaying/ neutering, emergency treatments and in some cases vaccinations. The charity is now appealing for donations and volunteers.

By Matt D’Arcy

Here the President of the charity Ron Nutter, gives a few more details about the charity and explains what they need to help them. "We have two shops based in Lagos which solely depend on donations from the public of unwanted saleable goods, i.e. clothing, bric-a-brac furniture etc. World War II Veteran George Bailey

A true World War 2 veteran was the special guest at the Royal British Legion Dinner celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE Day. Ninety-three years old George Bailey brought the memory of the conflict to life as he spoke a few words in memory of all the comrades he served with in the fighting across Europe. The celebration dinner, at Lazy Jacks Bar & Grill on Lagos Marina, organised by James and Sue Howe of the Western Area branch of the RBL (Portugal), raised €228 for the Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Afterwards Sue declared: “The turnout was fantastic and guests came from all three branches of the military, Army, Air force and Royal Navy. “Jo, the owner of Lazy Jacks, was kind enough to provide free for every guest a complimentary drink of champagne & orange Juice and also donated a meal for 2 as a raffle prize. It was wonderful to have George there as a very special guest and, more importantly, a real link back to the joy of that day in 1945 when victory in Europe was declared after six years of fighting. “George enjoyed spending time with other former military personnel of more recent times and says he hopes to attend a few more Royal British Legion Events here in the Algarve.” The next Royal British Legion Western Area Event will be a “Garden Poppy Day Picnic” at the Casa Grande in Burgau, on June 27th, between the hours of 2 – 6 pm. Details are to be published at a later date so watch this space!

“All our staff are volunteers, including myself so 100% of our profits go to the animals and animal shelters which I am very pleased to say are more numerous than when I took over the presidency seven years ago. “We also provide the income to feed and care for the Ferry Cats on the Lagos Marina which attract cat lovers from all over the world. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control we had to vacate our main shop by the Galp garage so had to suspend all our outgoing funds to other animal charities.

However, we are pleased to say that we have found a new larger shop. The new shop will require more shop fittings and extra staff so I ask if anyone can spare three to four hours per week and would like to meet new people working in one of our shops or one hour per week feeding the feral cats on the Lagos Marina. Also we would be grateful for donations to help towards the cost of fitting out the new shop. Our shop locations are: Nandi 1 No 15 Loja 4 Rua da Ameijeira (behind the Gonçalo private hospital) Opening hour: 10am-4pm Sunday - Saturday Nandi 2 Rua Moinho de Azeite Opening hours: 10am-4pm Monday - Saturday Donations IBAN No 004571944018666104484 If you would like to volunteer for one of our shops phone Helen 966666314 or Pat 919923883, for cat feeding please contact Pam 935951975. A clean sweep (almost)

Not only did Santo Antonio Resort’s golf team win the Algarve League but the bowls club also dominated their sport across the Algarve! Floresta Foresters headed the Bowls Algarve league for most of the season, being in the lead for 15 out of 18 weeks. The last game was at home against Alvor Scorpions who had been their main rivals all winter. The winning squad was George Humphreys, Geoff Hargreaves, Ken Catherall, Ron Cane, David Hibbert, Ron Wright, David Perrin, Debbie Stewart, Nick Roberts, and the team was captained by John Kerr. The Bowls Algarve Interclub championship finals were held recently at Tavira Bowls

Club. Floresta Bowls club had reached the finals of the men’s singles, the ladies pairs and the mixed fours. George Humphreys of Floresta Bowls Club won the men’s singles against Gerry Jones of Tavira. Helen Stokes and Debbie Stewart won the ladies pairs against Lorraine Freeman and Jenny Jones of Tavira but unfortunately George Humphreys, Geoff Hargreaves, Debbie Stewart and Greer Hogg were runners up in the mixed fours against Alvor. For both teams to have such great success is testament to the competitive spirit that exists at Santo Antonio Resort. Óbidos – one of the wonders of Portugal by Ray Gillman of churches, a promoter of education and support for the people, and a peacemaker. She, literally, became a saint: Rainha Santa Isabel – Queen Saint Elizabeth of Portugal. Dinis built numerous castles, his famous cloister at the Cistercian abbey at Alcobaça, and, notably, he recognised the importance and potential of the cork-oak plantations in the south of the country and established laws governing the care and development of the trees. He also helped establish the first university in Portugal – which alternated its ‘seat’ between Lisbon and Coimbra – in 1288. Five kilometres south of Caldas da Rainha, in Estramadura, sits the beautiful walled town of Óbidos. In July 2007 (on 07/07/07 in fact) Óbidos vas voted one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal by the Portuguese people. Its story illustrates more aspects of the country’s fascinating history. Portugal’s first king: Afonso Henriques, took the town from the Moors in 1148 and refortified the castle. The walls were extended to encompass the town, totally, by the 14th century. An important coastal town, until the river gradually silted up and its influence waned, Óbidos’ main claim to historical significance is that one of the most important early kings of Portugal – Dom Dinis – gave the town as a wedding present to his bride, the twelve year old Princess Isabel of Aragon in 1282. The town remained the property of the Queens of Portugal until 1834. Isabel and Dinis were married further north, in Trancoso (another walled town he gave to his bride!). The walls of the town were draped with rich, hanging fabrics and the couple walked on a carpet of rose petals. Their wedding celebration, apparently, mortified the Establishment because, for the first time in court history, male and female courtiers danced together! The legacy of Dom Dinis and Rainha Isabel Dom Dinis was a great builder of fortifications of his country, a far-sighted supporter of agriculture and a patron of education and religion. His wife, Queen Isabel (Elizabeth, in English), was a builder

|

Isabel the peacemaker, philanthropist – and nun Dinis had several illegitimate children as well as his offspring with Isabel. Many children in these circumstances were recognised as princes and princesses. Portugal’s first king’s mother was herself the illegitimate child of the King of Castile who granted her and her husband (Henri of Burgundy) the governance of the northern Spanish province of ‘Portucale’ – and the rest is (Portuguese) history...

She gave away all her personal assets to the Church and the people. There is a church of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal in Richmond, Surrey. My wife’s mother (also named Elizabeth) was a parishioner and, after we moved to Portugal, we invited her over to visit sites associated with the Queen Saint and to find a souvenir – ideally a tile picture – to donate to the church. We couldn’t find any! Not even in Estremoz, where she died, and where there is a beautiful chapel in the castle dedicated to her memory. So I decided to produce one – my first ‘azulejo’ panel – which was given to the church to mark Elizabeth’s 80th birthday in 2004.

However, Dom Dinis’s legitimate son Afonso (later Afonso IVth of Portugal, who ruled from 1325 to 1357) became obsessed with the idea that one of Dom Dinis’s seven ‘bastard sons’ would be favoured for the succession and took arms against his father. Queen Isabel interceded, persuaded them into a negotiation and settlement, and avoided a family schism and possibly a civil war. The miracle of the roses The enduring legend about St Isabel, however, is that of ‘The Roses’. She often used to go amongst the poorest of her subjects dispensing food and money. This perturbed Dom Dinis and he followed her to ‘catch her in the act’. When he confronted her she opened the fold of her skirt, in which she had stored the charitable dispensations and revealed – roses. Isabel rebuilt the Convent of Santa Clara in Coimbra and insisted that it incorporated a hospital for the poor. When her husband died in 1325 she retired to the convent, taking the habit of the ‘Sisters of Poor Clare’.

Today, Óbidos is firmly on the ‘tourist’ route - a picturesque time-capsule with souvenir shops, a pousada and other hotels and restaurants. It hosts the famous ‘Chocolate Festival’ each spring and its cherry liqueur – ginjinha – often served in cups of thin chocolate – is renowned. Look behind what you see today, however, and you gain fascinating glimpses into Portugal’s history.

Behind the lens

We left Luanda in July 1971 on the wonderful Portuguese liner ‘Príncipe Perfeito’ which used to ply the route from Lisbon to Mozambique via Angola and South Africa. My next posting was to be in New Delhi as one of six Foreign Office Immigration Attaches. By this stage the FO had got its pre-posting training act together so by the time I arrived a few months later (we were delayed by yet another Indo-Pak war) I was pretty well briefed and trained. BUT, if we had found the transition from two-man Ulan Bator to three-man Luanda a culture shock, New Delhi could have been on another planet! At the time it was one of our premier posts with one of our most senior FO officials in charge of our High Commission with its 100 UK-based staff. More to the point all but a very few lived and worked on our vast (25 acre) self-contained compound. I found the job intriguing. Our work mostly entailed dealing with applications from families wanting to join Indians resident in the UK. Most applicants spoke only Punjabi so we had to use our interpreters. There had been tales of collusion between applicants and the interpreters. Although I doubted this - but also because I enjoy learning languages

His interest in photography started when he was studying at university and has grown ever since. He started off experimenting with painting abstracts, playing music and even singing on a university radio show. He bought his first analogue camera at this time and started shooting abstracts and urban landscape especially the old abandoned houses and buildings - all in black and white or sepia. He is interested in the contrast that one can create in photography using black and white. He said: “I like the landscape and I am always interested in purity, timeless and ethereal nature. Sometimes I keep only the presence of human (with silhouettes or wreck or lost structures).”

The award-winning Lagos based photographer, Alexandre Manuel was born in France but he moved to the Algarve. He has a PHD in Semiotics and taught linguistics and semiotics as well as information and communication studies before giving it all up to focus on photography.

- I persuaded my office to let me find a Sikh language tutor. No textbook existed so I went to his house (part of which he rented to an English teacher and his family – about whom much later) where we ground our way through the basics of the Punjabi script and grammar by means of his handwritten notes. Because of our appeal system (anyone refused a visa could have claimed I had misunderstood) I still had to use interpreters but invariably transcribed the answers before interpretation so any collusion was out of the question. A fascinating aspect of the job was that there was no reliable documentary evidence available to establish relationships. So we had to try to do so by interviewing family members individually about their family trees and different aspects of their local village life and then comparing their versions. This required a pretty sound knowledge of the way of life in the Punjab which we obtained through familiarisation visits – villagers were always very welcoming though somewhat surprised that I had taken the bother to learn their language. We loved India from the outset and were determined to see and learn as much as possible of the country and its vast array of cultures during our time there. Doug McAdam retired to the Algarve 11 years ago after 43 years in the Foreign Office.

also came first in the European Professional Photography of the year 2015 in the landscape category. Alexandre said he had no big ambitions as such for his photography but did want to exhibit his work more widely at home and abroad. He said as a photographer he was consumed by photography. “Every day, every hour of the day we live inside photography, we always think about it. Photography takes all time we have, we are always training, making mistakes and learning and that learning never ends,” he added. Alexandre said his favourite photographer was Ansel Adams. He said: “He is one of the fathers of landscape photography. His pictures are so deep and so beautiful, and I also am a fan of Hiroshi Sugimoto.” Alexandre takes commissions and you can contact him by emailing alexandremanuelphotos@hotmail.com

What’s On... Lagos Street Food Fest 2015

Get those stretchy trousers ready - Lagos Street Food Fest is here!

Gourmet cuisine has experienced a revolution. These days food trucks are invading the streets with bistronomique burgers, kebabs, and bagels reminiscent of those from New York. From old VW’s transformed into Caipirinha bars to horse trailers transformed into Pizzerias - you name it, we have it.

On July 3rd, 4th and 5th, the Lagos Street Food Fest will be centre stage with over 30 Food Trucks from across the country. When asked about the Street Food Fest, Event Coordinator Maria Nobre de Carvalho said, “Lagos has such a cool vibe to it. Our goal with the Lagos Street Food Fest is not only to fill a gap in the events scene but to create community and a space for people to "live the city". And who doesn't like to eat, right?"

"Buy the tokens! There won't be any live currency exchanged with the Food Trucks, so don't forget to exchange euros for Foodies ahead of time. Divide and Conquer: Come with a group of friends, and split up - some get drinks, others get bites. Don’t Fill Up Too Fast: Plan to visit your favourites and must-try’s first before you fill up and pass out in the grass. Oh, and Pro Tip: Stretchy trousers.” The Lagos Street Food Fest will be held in Jardim da Constituição, in the Avenida, on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of July. The event is open to the public. For more information – please contact Maria at lagosfoodfest@gmail.com

So this July get ready to spread out a picnic blanket on the grass, sip a cold beer, chill with signature cocktails, sip wines with one of Portugal’s top sommelier, strike a pose at the Foodie Photo Booth and get ready to eat to your heart’s content. Plus, part of the proceeds will go to charity, so if you needed an excuse, you can always say it's for a good cause. Some Tips for the Event? Maria says:

Singing in the sunshine

Live jazz at the Casa do Povo, Moncarapacho

The weather is hotting up and it's nearly that time of year when the choir start to take our rehearsals and performances outdoors.

In the meantime, we have a special performance this month which we're really looking forward to...although you'll have to wait for next month's edition of Tomorrow to find out how it went.

The New Orleans Jazz Band - on one of their rare forays to the Sotovento - will be playing at the Casa do Povo in Moncarapacho on Saturday June 6th at 7 pm. The Casa do Povo already have a regular Sunday afternoon tea dance which is very popular, attracting scores of people - although very few estrangeiros laments Joaquim, the President of the Casa do Povo. He hopes to attract more foreigners with Dixieland and New Orleans style jazz. There is a huge dance hall with stage plus lots of outside terrace space.

Our doors are always open to new members - whether you're an infrequent visitor to the area or you live here all year round.

The New Orleans Jazz Band was formed in 1998 by a group of international jazz musicians, all now living in the Algarve. The band performed at the 1999 Loulé

Deadly Nightcap - It's a Family Affair!

“I am very excited, but really nervous,” explained Ian McCullagh when asked how he felt about acting on stage with his son James for the first time. They are taking part in The Algarveans' latest production Deadly Nightcap, written by the master of whodunits, Francis Durbridge. Ian, a regular performer with the Algarveans, continued that when he moved over to the Algarve a number of years ago little did he think James would follow him to live and work, let alone appear on stage. “I haven't done AmDram for years, since I was a teenager really when I was involved with youth productions of Pride and Prejudice, Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe and some other shows,” added James. “Then the opportunity came to be in Deadly Nightcap with my dad and I thought why not?” Both Ian and James have key roles in the play and have been rehearsing together for a number of weeks. Ian plays the part of sinister businessman Jack Radford and James plays the crime solving maverick police office, Cliff Jordan. Deadly Nightcap is a classic murder mystery play and has more twists and turns than the road to Foia and is as knicker-gripping as the descent on the same route. The show is being performed at the beautiful air-conditioned Lagoa Auditorium from Wednesday June 17th to Friday June 19th at 8pm. Tickets are currently available at algarveansboxoffice@gmail.com with the telephone box office opening soon.

This year the team relay and individual athletes had the option to take part in two distances; the Sprint race - 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run and double those distances for the Olympic event. With less hilly courses for both the cycle and the run disciplines than in 2015, the winning times were very impressive! Two separate donations from Algarve Triathlons will be made to Neci for the amount of €1500. The second donation of €500 will be made to a young boy who has Celebral Palsy from Burgau, Diego Messias Pedrosa to go towards a new disabled pushchair. (You can read more about him in the community section of the newsletter). The Algarve Triathlons team said: “A huge thank you to Neci, to all the athletes, the incredible

Tee off for charity

Bringing history alive ‘Tertúlia’, a social-cultural organisation at Aljezur, is organising a series of cultural events, which is part of DiVaM, a programme aimed at stimulating interest and valuing historical monuments.

Golfe Santo Antonio (formerly Parque da Floresta) is hosting a Golf Charity Day on Friday July 3rd 2015 for Riding for the Disabled Barlavento. The charity was established in Portugal five years ago and registered as ‘Associação de Equitação Adaptada Barlavento’. Internationally, Riding for the Disabled dates back to 1965 and is dedicated to helping disabled children and adults to improve both their physical and mental abilities. The local branch in Barlavento now has a membership of 70. The organisers are always looking for able helpers of all ages and nationalities to volunteer even for an hour during the two days of sessions they hold a week.

The venues for the events are Sagres Fort, Church of Our Lady of Guadeloupe and Aljezur Castle. The events are free of charge and run until October. The Church of Our Lady of Guadeloupe Seven temporary art exhibitions entitled ‘2ou3x7’ is taking place. Glorious Arrifana So far locations featured in this series, like an earlier wild coastal view to the south of Arrifana, have been accessed via trails and sometimes hard trekking. This month’s is a car ride just south of Aljezur following the signs to Arrifana along the 1003-1 road. So no excuses for missing this spectacular view! Although hardly a secret, many people only head down towards the beach.

Readers’ Letters...

We are always really pleased to get letters from our readers. If you would like to send us your views on anything that’s going on in the western Algarve or if you have any suggestions to make about the newsletter please email: editorial@tomorrowalgarve.com

Dear Editor, We are fast approaching August 2015 which is Madrugada’s scheduled month for electing officers and assistants to our Governing Body. The Management Board are keen to welcome fresh faces and members who would like to be more involved in the decision making processes of our well respected, much needed and ever growing association. Madrugada has come a long way since its inception in 2009 and we are delighted to have been of real assistance to so many people in need of our support both during serious illness and recuperation and for some less fortunate, on into palliative and end of life care. It has been an honour to provide a service which supports people at end of life, offering the kind of care that really makes a difference to patients and their families. Without Madrugada, the majority of those we have cared for since 2010 would not have been able to be cared for at home during their last remaining days; a choice we believe is a human right. In a global context, Portugal is recognised as having a patchy, localised palliative care provision, similar to countries like the Congo, Egypt or Croatia; in fact it is often easier to access palliative care in remote areas in Africa than it is in Portugal! The introduction of palliative care in Portugal is not due to a government initiative, but to a few pioneers keen to address the treatment of chronic pain in patients suffering from advanced cancer and to guarantee continuity of care for patients in the advanced stages of incurable disease. The Portuguese Government has no plans in place to implement a nationwide palliative care scheme that will meet the needs of its population. Currently there are 118 palliative care beds available to serve 10½ million permanent inhabitants; all but 10 of those beds are located in Lisbon or further

north and community based teams are a rare animal. This means that for most people in need of a palliative care bed in the Algarve, availability often comes too late. A ‘hospice at home’ service is a viable alternative and for many but not for all, this would be their preference. The need for Madrugada remains as evident today as it did in 2009. The charity is moving into a new phase now; with a strong focus on achieving our goal to open the first ‘Hospice’ in Portugal. We are actively encouraging additional people with a broad range of experience and knowledge to join our management board. The Algarve region has an opportunity to be a leading light in the provision of hospice care and by supporting the work of Madrugada you will be furthering the development of what will be a ‘flag ship’ facility to be proud of. More importantly, you will be part of an organisation that knows how to make a difference when it really counts and achieves it every single day. If you have a desire to help us support more patients and their families facing life limiting illness, we would encourage you to contact Kathy McLauchlan in the first instance on kathy@madrugada-portugal.com or tel 282761375. Dear Editor, The Lions are in Lagos. Lions, the world largest Service Club, has been further exploring the possibility of starting a new, English speaking branch of " ‘Lions Clube de Loulé’ in Lagos. An article in ‘Tomorrow’ last April, gave many reactions of former Lions, now living as expats in the Western Algarve, feeling the

need to reactivate their membership, and of other prospective members, wishing to serve their community. At the second meeting, again in Hotel Tivoli in Lagos, seven potential members of different nationalities showed up, confirming their interest in founding a Lagos Branch of the mother club LC de Loulé, with, with the ambition of expanding into an independent LC de Lagos. Also present were Lions' District Governor, Carlos Nunes,LC Loulé’s President Ulla de Jager and interim secretary Theo de Jager, member LC Loulé. The District Governor (DG) explained the objectives of Lions in general and the conditions and procedure to start a branch, as initial step towards becoming an independent club. The DG and Loulé’s President emphasised their commitment to give any form of support needed in this phase. The fruitful meeting resulted into the decision to start a Lagos Branch and the required preliminary board was formed, with Michael Colley as President, Anabel Bonin as secretary and Bill Townsendas treasurer. Two more present applied for membership. Theo de Jager form LC Loulé, volunteered to continue as press officer and deputy secretary for a while. Meeting the requirements to start a branch so now the Lions are in Lagos. Now the work starts to recruit more members in the Lagos area of different professions and nationalities. If you want to find out more please contact ted.hunter@world.net.pt. For more information about Lions, please visit: www.lionsclubs.org Thank you again for your space and hospitality, With kind regards, Theo de Jager

Health... Kinesiology Tape By Becca Towers Kinesiology tape is a rehabilitative taping technique designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process. It is not a new fad; it was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in the 1970s. The tape was adopted by Japanese athletes in the 1988 Olympics. More recently, top athletes globally are seen wearing the brightly coloured tape whilst competing. These professionals found that by using Kinesiology tape their sporting performance improved and in the event of injury, it allowed a quicker return to sport. It provides the much needed stability and support to muscles and joints during an injury period without restricting the body’s range of motion. It is latex-free, elastic cotton with an acrylic adhesive designed to imitate the human skin in both thickness and elasticity.

Stress

Unlike traditional strapping tapes (which still have a place in rehabilitation) that provide rigid support and movement restrictions, Kinesiology tape can be worn without tight binding, constriction or restriction in the normal range of musculoskeletal movement for up to a week, aiding the benefits of any manual therapy treatment within the clinical setting by providing extended support. There are plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube showing you how to apply Kinesio tape. However, to get the full results from Kinesio tape applications, training is in fact needed and allows a full assessment of the injury within the scope of the practitioner’s field to be conducted as occasionally other underlying conditions may also require treatment to assist a full recovery. Stress management is an important area for the the health of your body. This includes learning to deal with stress and putting strategies in place to help mitigate the effects of stress. Exercise and nutrition are key to help with this. Exercise can help to relax the body and mind and as it produces endorphins. These can help enhance moods, making you feel better and also making you sleep better, which all helps to reduce stress. In this modern busy world stress is something that is often spoken about, and in the course of an evening’s conversation it is normal for someone to say they are feeling stressed or have had a stressful day. It has become an acceptable part of our lives, but we tend to absorb the stress without realizing the damage it can do to our bodies and unless the stress gets to the point it makes us quite ill, we don’t tend to do anything about it, or put in strategies to help to manage it. Stress can come in many different forms pressure from work, life, family and money. It can come from lack of sleep, exercising

Natural sunblock v commercial By Meri Hanlin

Did you know that most commercial sun blocks and creams contain a whole cocktail of petrochemicals, waxes/ paraffin, artificial colorants and scents, along with a list of chemicals only a chemist could understand? Yet, here we are, protecting ourselves from nasty Mister Sun, slathering this all over the family. Baking in potential carcinogens. Ironic, isn’t it. With Natural & Organic Sun Creams, you don’t have to worry about harming yourselves or your family while still getting complete sun protection. Harmony Earth carries a large range of natural sun blocks and creams (Lavera being my favourite and most organic), plus various after suns, Aloe Vera gels and creams; After sun shimmer creams and oils (gives a beautiful, glowing tone to the skin for an evening out. Gorgeous!), and even more! If you have a “blooper”, our burn relief spray works instantly, and the allergy spray for prickly heat does the same: you could avoid the sun completely by using our organic self-tan! How about using coconut oil, a natural SPF of 10 and if used on the hair, will stop damage, particularly if you are in the sun a lot (Hello Surfers!) To stop sun burn, follow this easy to use formula: for fair skin – approx 10 mins x SPF20 = 200mins=3 ⅓ hours of sun exposure time. It is advisable not to exceed this limit, even if more cream has been applied. Enjoy the sun, but let’s be safe. Pop in to Harmony Earth in Luz to find out more.

Preventative Care By Dr Andrew Garbett

Pilates for Men!

By Lisa Longhurst Women are typically 7% more flexible than men in their ligaments and a tendon, which means guys need to catch up! Men tend to be less flexible around the hips than women but Pilates’ exercises can be modified easily and props used to ensure just as good a work out.

Many people seek chiropractic care for pain or after suffering injury. However, chiropractic care has historically been a discipline that promotes health and wellness as opposed to just treating injuries after the fact. Their focus on health and wellness makes chiropractors excellent sources of preventative health care services. Most men assume Pilates is for women! I have heard some men say that they are uncomfortable in a mostly female class.

Chiropractors offer patients a variety of preventative services that are non-invasive and non-surgical to help patients live a healthier, pain-free and disease-free life. Chiropractors promote health and wellness by counselling patients on a variety of lifestyle habits and activities. Chiropractors educate patients on exercise and fitness, nutrition, how to change unhealthy behaviours, ergonomics and tips on posture, as well as stress relief strategies and relaxation techniques. Spinal manipulation is another preventative service offered by chiropractors.

Through regular manipulations that align the spine, chiropractors can help relieve and/or prevent headaches, fatigue, back pain and numbness or tingling in the extremities. Improving the spine’s alignment can help the patient experience increased range of motion, improve overall quality of life and improve the body’s ability to heal itself.

Leukaemia

- Red marrow found in flat bones (sternum, skull, vertebra, shoulder blade, hip bones, ribs and end of the long bones such as the humerus and femur) produces blood cells: White cells which fight infection, red cells which carry oxygen to all parts of your body and platelets which help with clotting. - Yellow marrow is made up of mainly fat cells and if your body loses a lot of blood can be converted into red marrow to increase blood cell production. 1. A strong core working toward a six pack! Incorporating slow and controlled moving core exercises that require you to hold a pose for an extended period of time makes for an intense abdominal contraction. Joseph Pilates died at 84 with an enviable six pack! 2. Flexibility. Strengthen and lengthen your muscles!

The spine, which has 24 independent vertebrae, not only enables your body to carry itself and to move every which way, it also helps protect the nerves that carry messages between the brain and the body. When two or more of these vertebrae aren’t aligned correctly, the body can experience pain and/or illness.

blood cells, generally leucocytes (white blood cells). Exact cause is still not known but it appears that some cells develop abnormalities from a combination of genetic (when the DNA, which give instructions inside each cell guiding their actions, mutates) and environmental factors (e.g. large amounts of radiation/certain chemicals). Damaged DNA in immature blood cells causes chaotic growth and division impeding normal function. They do not die off as quickly as normal cells and begin to accumulate in the circulatory system occupying more and more space and crowding out the healthy working cells this is when the sufferer becomes ill. Health...

Pets Mate By Lars Rahmquist

Farmers’ market health foods By Hannah Sharpe de Rosa With their brief growing season and ultra-short shelf life, fresh figs are a rare delicacy compared to other more familiar fruits. Fresh figs contain trace amounts of numerous important nutrients, but their primary nutritional value comes from the amount of fibre, potassium and readily available energy they provide.

And it’s summer! (not Andy Summers, he’s the guitarist from the Police). A lot of beautiful spring flowers have been gracing our noses with their fragrant smells over the last month or two, but as things continue to dry off, these plants will be going into senescence (see, vets do know some other long, fancy words). As they approach the end of their yearly cycle, they grow their grass seeds for next year’s generation. Many of these form into spiky ‘awns’, which stick on your socks , trousers, cats, dogs, etc to go forth and prosper.

anaesthesia I looked up his nose with our rhinoscope and bingo: sneezing reason detected, and removed. Another less common place for the grass seeds to place themselves is under the eyelids, especially the elusive ‘3rd eyelid’. So if your doggie (or horse/cat/etc) has one eye slightly closed, one ear flicking about, there might be more to it than you can see. Grass seeds love to make themselves unseen; and may be the underlying reason for subtle discomfort with your pet, eg sneezing every day.

But this is not Clive Goodacre's article and I shall say no more about horticulture (plus, I don’t know much more on the subject.) Rather, I want pet owners to be aware of these sticky, spiky little hitch-hikers. We have seen a lot of dogs and cats presenting with grass seeds imbedded in various places. Today Andre (one of our other vets) removed a nasty woody one from the foreleg of a dog. The only subtle sign being a swelling and a small hole in the skin. Under sedation he was able to remove a massive foreign body which had implanted itself, entirely, under the skin.

On another note it is very much puppy and kitten season. There has been a lot of bitches and queens (this bit is not rapper parlance…) having kittens and pups over the last couple of months. If you have a new little clan of midnight squeakers in your house, make sure to speak to your vet about worming medicine for them. Worms’ larvae can be contracted by the youngones in utero and through the milk from their mum. When young, there is no ‘host immunity’ against internal parasites and the little ones can even die from worm burderns.

More common places of preference for the grass awns tend to be between the toes, in the ears and up the old shnozz. Last Monday my dog Norm was doing a bit of sneezing. We had been out for a long walk on the west coast all weekend and, having such a big nose, Norm had snuffed up a massive grass seed. Under general

If you are interested in a new puppy or kitten for your home, contact your vet clinic or one of the shelters, because it is indeed the season for them.

Fresh or dried, they offer a significant source of both types of dietary fibre. Their soluble fibre contributes to satiety and promotes healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels, while their insoluble fibre supports efficient digestion and bowel regularity. The potassium content helps keep fluids and minerals balanced in and around cells and throughout the body, which is essential to nerve, muscle and heart function. Figs are a great source of vitamin B6, which helps to produce mood-boosting serotonin, lower cholesterol and prevent water retention. The high calcium, magnesium, manganese and vitamin K content of figs promotes bone density and can guard against osteoporosis. Since they aren’t a significant source of protein or fat, nearly all of their calories come from carbohydrates. Two large figs have almost 25 grams of carbohydrates, most of which is in the form of simple sugars. Try to use sliced figs as an ingredient in your meals rather than eating them whole and on their own. I like to make a mozzarella or feta and fig salad, as the protein in the cheese slows the absorption of the sugars. However, if you're diabetic or prediabetic and concerned about the sugar content, consider making a tea infusion out of fig leaves, which have repeatedly demonstrated anti-diabetic properties. Hannah is a registered nutritional therapist.

Business...

It’s all in the planning.... By David Westmoreland Every client is different. Every client approaches their purchase in a different way. From being totally armed with every conceivable detail, to having complete open briefs. So what is the right way to start your search? Well clearly you need to understand your budget. The purchase of a new holiday home should be hugely pleasurable experience and once purchased should be your home from home in the sun. So keep to your budget, the last thing you want is to put yourself under pressure. The haven in the sun could become a millstone and that defeats the whole object. Secondly, clarify in your mind what the objective of the property is. Is it for the whole family to use or is it for the two of you to escape to? Do you plan to have large groups staying at the same time or just your immediate family? Do you like to spend time at home or out at the beach all day?

What time of year do you usually take your holidays? Do you want a swimming pool? A gym? A garden? Do you need a garage? Do you want to walk into the town at night? Do you want privacy around your property? There are lots of choices out there so a clear understanding of your needs will not only help you but also your agent. Location – you may have spent your holidays for a couple of weeks every year in one location but when it comes to spending longer periods here location is key. Are there hospitals nearby? Supermarkets? Pharmacies? Markets? Bus stops? Taxis? You also need to think about winter time. Is the normal holiday location a busy community in the winter or does it simply close down? You don’t want to be the only person in the village in January…. Or maybe you do! Services – do you plan to be totally selfsufficient or would you prefer a fully serviced property? Resorts offer all year round support from security, on-site restaurants, reception through to maid service, laundry and property management. Alternatively, you can manage all of this yourself or find a half-way house by appointing a management company to assist you.

Chainlight Lighting Systems By Christel Schönberger

The final decision is how to find your ideal property. There are many agents out there, some good and some not so good. My advice is to find one you are comfortable with. One that listens to your requirements and asks you the right questions. At the end of the day you are the buyer and will buy what you want not what the agent wants to sell to you! Some agents may want to sell you a property and then walk away others, such as B&P, offer a complete service where we will help you find the right property for you and then assist you with the whole process going forward. At B&P we offer support of lawyers, currency transfer, furniture choice and once you have bought, Resort Rentals Algarve offer you full management support and will also rent your property out if you wish. So if you are starting the buying process or about to start, B&P will give you a professional and friendly service ensuring the whole experience is simple and enjoyable. For more details contact me on david@bpaproperty.com or call in to the office located on the Avenida.

Love your home?

New lettings laws By Vicki Harding Lagos lettings’ company, Algarve Accommodation Agency staff members recently attended a ‘one stop shop’ seminar set up by Safe Communities Algarve and Tourismo do Algarve to look at the new rules and regulations being introduced for the property rental market in Portugal.

In our ever growing number of big stores and multi-national businesses it is a real pleasure to meet small business people that make sure they provide services that are far bigger than their square footage may suggest!

Officials say the new laws are aimed at making the property rental market a safe and secure environment for Portugal’s holiday makers. It was made very clear that non-compliance holds some hefty fines for the individual renter or agencies.

Paul and Angela Pacheco are just two of these entrepreneurs operating in our area and that have grown and prospered in the face of the very difficult recession. They have expanded in Lagos and have so much to offer that it is difficult to quantify in this small article.

A breakdown of what you need to know:

The objective, amongst many laudable ideas is to make ‘partnerships’ with other likeminded businesses helping customers to find all the services that you would only expect to find in bigger cities. Because of these combined buying powers, they really are able to pass on the benefits to their growing number of satisfied clients. Firstly, with CAZA LUX and their ‘HOUSE REFRESH’ programme, they are taking on revamps or refurbishments, large or small. Paul and Angela can offer all the lovely lighting products at so much less than if you or I were only working with a lighting shop or other allied service provider. Their store is a pleasure to visit and honestly you will be amazed at the choice, price and quality. Curtain making, re-upholstery, boats covers and seating are all made ‘in house’ and that means huge savings for the buyer in reduced overheads alone. They now have a full interior design package and can provide schemes for one room or the whole house at only €150 per room! Their original concept of low cost and high quality has grown and developed and not been comprised. So there is no need to travel motorways and borders -here we have it all in our local area! 1. `Alojamento Local´ is the name for the tourist licence required for any type of holiday rental accommodation. It is now a free service to register at your local Câmara (council) offices for the AL licence but there is a compulsory inspection and this carries a fee of €124.26 euros. You also need a complaints book at a cost of €19.59 euros, in addition to this there is a list of basic safety items needed inside the accommodation. 2. You have to register with Finanças (local tax office) to start business activity in conjunction with the AL. It’s advisable to have an accountant in place for this as each rental client has to be invoiced. 3. The new taxation for the AL activity is much more generous than beforethan before. There are two brackets for this under €10,000 or over €10,000. If you stay under €10,000 you are IVA exempt but if

you go over €10,000 you have to become IVA registered and do quarterly IVA returns. It is currently thought that refunds may be the norm when IVA registered (this will increase your annual fee with your accountant). Whatever bracket you fall under the AL regime gives 85% allocation for deductible expenses and you only pay tax on the remaining 15% of your income. 4. Once this is all in place and you are registered and have had your inspection you will receive an ‘AL’ number. This number has to be present on all advertising to show that you are compliant. 5. SEF (Borders agency) when you receive your guests in your accommodation (only paying guests) you have three working days to register them on the SEF (SIBA) system. All guests have to be registered even babies. Algarve Accommodation Agency is proud to say that we are fully compliant and after a busy winter in the office our properties are all registered under this new law. Food & Beverage... What do you desire? By Tom Henshaw

A new fashion By our sommelier, Miguel Martins beers with the purpose of being consumed faster as they don’t require the same treatment as high volume beer. They are beers that are almost treated as if they were couture garments; as if they were designed on the basis of new ideas with great eye for detail but not going out of style becoming known worldwide as is the case with Stout, Bock, Pilsner etc. In Portugal we are witnessing a new fashion; a fashion that I think will be the next discovery of the Portuguese this summer. It follows on from the fashion of gin, which has been very strong in the last two years. This will be the next trend of the market. We are beginning to see Craft Beer Fairs and some restaurants have already started to present decent menus of beer, something that didn’t happen until very recently.

Delhi Darbar is the new Indian Restaurant on the block in Lagos (by the Repsol Station) and it’s sure to be a great success as long as they can maintain their superb opening standards. We had the pleasure of enjoying a feast the other evening and took all of Sunita’s suggestions. I am a ‘Chicken Tikka Masalla’ man normally so my impressions were really heightened by the wonderful aromas and flavours of their excellent alternative offerings. I have to say the service is so friendly that you know you are in good hands and that you can rely on their choices rather than feel you have been ‘fobbed off’ with the same old standard choices normally on offer. The pickle tray is not your ‘run of the mill’ as more than half the range is homemade which is a very nice touch indeed.

Now that the hot weather is upon us it is always good to talk about refreshing drinks, in this case beer. Beer has always been highly appreciated in Portugal, although the country does not have a great tradition of beer production of the quality and complexity of the northern beers of Europe, such as Germany, Belgium or England. Beer has always been seen by the Portuguese as something of a refreshing drink rather than a complex one that can also accompany certain foods. However, this notion is changing thanks to new craft beers. As the name implies these are low volume

This great start to our dinner put is in the mind that we had made a very good choice of an Indian restaurant in Lagos. We were offered a real Indian ‘tapas’ selection and we both loved the presentation, the food and the overall attentive service provided. A very good all round choice and we certainly will be back soon-and NOT for my usual Chicken Tikka Masalla! Definitely ask about their Thali nights for something a little bit different. Call 00 351 282 762 249. There is a lunch and dinner 10% discount on takeaways at the restaurant near the Repsol station on Avenida.

Food & Beverage...

Cook your first Vietnamese dish This recipe for Sesame Chicken is from Ellie’s Kitchen

By our mystery reviewer, Catheine

Brizze Bar – Burgau: Well what can I say - the white coffee is good (€1.50 – café com leite) the service is friendly, if less than ‘PC’ on occasion, although amusing. The situation is pleasant as the outside terrace is facing the sea, in the old part of Burgau. I tried the homemade apple pie, the flavour was good but the anticipation of crisp pastry and sweet apple combined with my coffee, was ruined, when the pie was presented having been heated in a microwave and the soggy slice bore no resemblance to my expectations. So whilst I do recommend going, please, do one of the following: Have pie on the day it is freshly made or have it cold or ensure it has been heated in normal oven! They also have homemade scones (which I did not try).

Brizze - equally good coffee, at 30 cents cheaper. No homemade food but pastella da natas were available. Smoking allowed on the outside terrace which you get to by climbing steps up from the road. Location: Left hand fork downhill to first open area, turn left, on left.

Location: Right hand fork downhill towards beach in Burgau, Brizze is on right hand side.

Café Gambo: Various attempts at Portuguese by visitors is the norm, when you go down a couple of steps into this tiny coffee bar. I love to sit here, as people who go to the nearby Language School often arrive in desperate need of a coffee and the ladies who serve are delightful and very patient with the less than perfect attempts at communication. So, if you want to try out the few words you have memorized, this is the place. The coffee is very good, they also have the usual pastries, with a rather quirky window display.

Varanda de Burgau: Also with a sea view, although a little more distant than

Location: Centre of Lagos next to florist on the same road as Artistas Restaurant.

Outdoor... If you want summer annual and perennial flowers then be prepared to apply water and regular attention. But low water natives such as Asterica, Phlomis, Lavender, Sage, Rosemary and Santolina can be planted away from irrigation and hand watered occasionally during summer.

Phlomis - a survivor in the wild or dry garden Dry gardens needn't be boring

Drying out By Clive Goodacre It doesn’t matter how much rain the western Algarve gets in winter and spring, because as we all know within a month from mid-May to mid-June, without watering of some kind, the ground will have dried out. Then from June until mid-September we only perhaps have a brief shower or two to relieve what would be classified in northern climes as a severe drought. Many gardens here contain plants from temperate, tropical and Mediterranean climes contributing to a busy and water intensive summer season. If yours fits this category then it might be a good idea to make some changes - think about grouping plants by their needs. Plot the pattern of sun, shade and prevailing wind during the day. See where windbreaks could reduce evaporation, keep new planting to a minimum in summer and remove anything that does not earn its keep. Also avoid buying new soft fleshy plants that have more than likely been greenhouse grown in the North. During summer it can be hard to get granular fertilisers into the soil so try foliar feeds if your plants need a quick tonic rather than depend on continuous watering and surface feeding. Irrigation systems can only have to back up existing moisture left in the soil after good winter and spring rainfall. But now irrigation is your garden’s lifeline and any weak spots must be fixed: flush out main lines; replace or clean drip and spray heads; check back-up batteries and ensure microlines are clear. Check under the surface of mulch where the soil can be dry as dust or so waterlogged as to be suffocating the plants.

Stick your fingers several inches into the soil to check moisture, especially with pots where the top can dry out within hours of watering giving the impression that it needs more. Equally, water may be just running straight through, missing roots entirely. Lawns are water junkies here so consider how much is actually needed for recreational purposes. If you are planning a new lawn or an extension then consider using kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) which spreads by means of thick coarse runners above and below ground. Originating from central Africa, it tolerates very low water and will nearly always recover from drought Many lawns are mostly decorative so a good solution to the low maintenance/low water problem is to use decorative grass such as Festuca glauca. This attractive bluish grass grows into radiating clumps which you can either let join together or leave gaps for mulching with bark, stones or a relatively non-invasive groundcover such as stonecrop (Sedum spectabilis) or Cotyledon orbiculata. Well-spaced succulents like Agave attenuata complete the landscaping. Flowers for dry gardens Plants able to withstand extreme temperatures, low water and poor soil yet look attractive throughout the summer tend to be native trees, tough shrubs and succulents or cacti. Although glorious spring flowers grow throughout the Algarve in rocky terrain they have few summer counterparts.

Although not a wild flower here try Gaura which originates from Texas flowering from late spring onwards. The common white variety puts out spoon shaped flowers on long wiry stems radiating out to form clumps up to 1m high. For something extra choose Gaura lindheimeri 'Siskiyou Pink' whose intensely pink butterfly shaped flowers and ability to grow in full sun and poor soil with little water make it a favourite in dryer lower maintenance gardens. Finally, my own favourite for sheer reliability and flowering repeatedly on a water/no-water regime is Euphorbia millii which develops over several years into a striking shrub provided it does not become waterlogged or subjected to temperatures much below 8ÂşC. Thanks to hybridisation, shades of yellow and pink are available as well as its original intense scarlet. Euphorbia millii lives up to its common name - crown of thorns - bearing vicious spines completely covering its multisided stems, so handle with care.

Euphorbia millii - indispensable for the dry garden
