Gaffer’s Notes Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and a warm welcome to our visitors today Rockleaze Rangers. I am writing this on a Wednesday night, a night after a very welcome home win over Kingswood. However since then we would have played 2 more fixtures, quite bizarre! We are playing a month’s football in less than a week, and for me that means a selection headache. Testing times to say the least! I have been urging the lads to man up and face the challenge when the going gets tough, so I guess I better practice what I preach! Going back to last Tuesday’s home win over Kingswood it was great to get some points in front of our home supporters. I keep having flashbacks of Damian’s penalty save and on reflection how important it was, it seemed to spur us on. How many times have we seen Danny Thompson make himself a yard and then fizz a shot off? We said after the match it would take something special like that to beat an in form Kingswood keeper. At times we kept the ball well and played some great football. Anyone who has watched our last few games would have

6

witnessed a few of our opponents going long desperate for points. I am quite surprised I am not in a neck brace as the ball can be up in the sky 80% of the match, so frustrating when quite often these teams are packed with lads that want to get it down and play. My teams may not always play fast flowing attractive football but I can assure you they are told to keep it short, neat, tidy and protect . Bill Bond, First Team Manager

thornbury town history It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports which was the amalgamation of two teams within the town, the club as it is known today “Thornbury Town FC” originated in the early 1970’s. Mundy Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were in the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope a long-standing sponsor of the club. Early records show club honours such as the: 1949-50 - District League Division 3 1956-57 - Premier Combination 1965-66 – District League Division 2 Thornbury Sports were founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League, however, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to required standards were unable to take the next step up. 1976/77 season saw relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their status in the Gloucestershire County League however never really threatening to take the Premier

Combination title and thus ensuring promotion. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. In the late 90s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 200102 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, £16k spent on improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County League with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did however come our way during this period following a penalty shootout over Taverners. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side in order to maintain Youth development within the club. Following a couple of indifferent seasons when relegation threatened a new management committee and first team management team were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager. With an initial three year strategy, which was extended to four, success was achieved during

7

the 2009-10 season when after a tremendous winning run of ten league games, the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title was won for the first time in club history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now, under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This continues to further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. At the end of this

successful season Dave Lippiatt and Carl Derosa stepped down and a season of retrenching followed in 2011-12. We are now however very pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Bond as 1st team manager with immediate effect. Bill, who was assistant to Roy Irwin until his recent departure, has a lot of contacts and knowledge of the local football scene and joined the club three seasons ago as their Gloucester County League U18’s manager. Malcolm Carr will continue to assist Bill as Physiotherapist and they are both wished every success by the clubs, players, committee and supporters as they look to steer the team away from the lower end of the current league table.

club man.

Steve Thompson - Striker. Really intelligent player with a great touch who can play as a striker or tucked in behind. Missed a lot of last season through injury so he is keen to get back into the scoring groove this year.

Sam Lippiatt – Defender. Has been with the club for a number of seasons now. Can play across the back and in midfield but is particularly effective as an attacking full back. He has a cultured left foot which he uses to good effect. Wants to play in the Bergkamp role but we don’t let him.

Rockleaze Rangers history Rockleaze Avonside football club was established in 1976 as a Sunday team under the name of Nat West Court FC. After a couple of seasons, the club expanded into Saturday football and joined the Bristol and Suburban League in 1979. Thereafter followed a number of years during which the club progressed through the divisions, with the highlight being GFA Minor Cup winners in 1986. The club were now known as Avonside Court and this progression culminated in being crowned Premier 2 Division Champions in 1989. After finishing the following season in 4th place in Prem 1, the early 90’s marked a transitional period for the club, establishing closer ties with Bristol and West and, as by then the club had moved grounds to play at the Bristol and West Sports Club then on the Portway. Under the management of Geoff Bryant and latterly Paul Smith, the club attracted a core of young players, many of whom are still with the club today. During this period the club enjoyed its most consistent performance, finishing in the top 6 in 4 consecutive seasons and narrowly missing out on the

Prem 1 Championship in 1999 season, having to settle for Runners-up spot. Another difficult period for the Club followed, with the club now known as B+W Avonside having to find a new home at the University Ground at Coombe Dingle, following the closure of the Bristol and West Sports Ground, and losing a number of key players to Gloucestershire and Somerset County League Clubs. This resulted in relegation back to Suburban Prem 2 in 2004, however, this was a turning point in the club’s fortunes, with the appointment of Andy Myland as 1st Team Manager, many of our past players returned coupled with the recruitment of a number of new faces and the team immediately returned to Prem 1 in 2005 as Prem 2 runners up. Cup semi-final appearances in the GFA senior Amateur in 2006 and the Suburban League Cup in 2007 ended in disappointment and despite 2 seasons of mid table finishes the decision was taken to strengthen the management team still further. The appointment of Carmelo Micciche as Manager and assisted by Roger Coke and previous manager Myland saw season 2007-08 start with much optimism. This optimism was not unfounded and the 1st team ended as GFA Senior Amateur Cup Champions, runners up in the Suburban League Premier 1 and promotion to the Gloucestershire County League for the first time in the club’s history. During the summer of 2009 B+W Avonside amalgamated with a junior football club

11

known as Rockleaze Rangers who were also based at the University Ground in Coombe Dingle to form a new ‘all through’ FA Charter Club known as Rockleaze Avonside FC. The junior section ran teams from Under 6’s though to Under 16’s with a membership exceeding 280. The amalgamation was such a success that at the end of the 2009-10 season the decision was made to augment the merger fully by playing under a single banner, that being Rockleaze Rangers F.C. Since 2009 the senior section of the club has expanded from 2 Saturday sides to the club we are today which has 4 Saturday sides, a Sunday Veterans side and also an Under 18’s side with an overall club membership in excess of 500. The clubs first four seasons in the County League have seen the club have 3 mid table finishes and one second from bottom reprieve. Whilst the 1st team is undoubtedly the club’s ‘flagship’ side other teams within the club have had their own successes with the Reserves under the stewardship of Jon Luing and Mark Lewis finishing Runners up in Suburban Division 1 in 2011/12 and being promoted to Suburban Premier 2 the highest our Reserves have been in the club’s history, the ‘A’ team managed by local racontuer Lee Douglas finishing 3rd and being promoted from Suburban Division 5 in 2010/11, the ‘B’ team (also managed by Lee Douglas) finishing 3rd in Suburban Division 5 in 2011/12 and finally the Sunday Vet’s led by ex Club Chairman Mike Hughes being promoted for 3 consecutive seasons winning The Bristol Casual League Division 5 in 2009/10, runners up in Division 4 in 2010/11 and also runners up in Division 3 in 2011/12.

Rockleaze rangers PLAYERS Nick Adams - Goalkeeper Nick has come through the RRFC ranks and been with the club since the age of ‘8’, the 18 year old is a commanding goalkeeper who has a great future in front of him if he continues to work hard. Aaron Day - Defender Now in his 5th season since arriving from local rivals Yate Town Reserves, Aaron is now 1st team captain, rarely misses matches and can be relied upon to score more than his fair share of goals in a season. Phil Sergeant – Midfielder The former Bristol Rovers YTS is now in his 8th season with the club since arriving from Winterbourne United, now is his mid thirties ‘Sarj’ is more than happy sitting in the centre of midfield pinging balls around the park. Ian Burnell – Midfielder Midfield player Burnell is now the 1st team’s longest serving player, IB was signed by previous manager Andy Myland in October 2004 following several years of coaching in the US. Neil Simons – Midfielder Simmo joined RRFC in September 2009 from County League rivals Yate Town Reserves. The former Glenside, Hanham and Highridge player can play fullback or midfield and just loves a tackle. Savas Frangoullis – Defender After leaving Hanham in September 2010, Savas returned to the club he first left in 2007, originally signed by previous Manager Andy Myland ‘Savs’ is a former Player of the Year back in the clubs Suburban League days, Savs is a quick and brave fullback who can create chances for others.

Gloucestershire County League Representative side two seasons ago whilst playing for Hanham Athletic. The former Bristol County man is a forward looking midfield player with an eye for a goal. Ben Lear – Midfielder Signed at the start of last season, 21 year old Ben arrived from Longwell Green of the Western League after playing his junior football at Cadbury Heath. Ben is a forward / winger with plenty of pace and close control and should be a great attacking option either through the middle or from the flanks.

Valentin Pomfret – Defender Valentin can play fullback or wide midfield using his cultured left foot, another former Hanham and Bristol Athletic player who considers himself a dead ball specialist.

James Cinicola– Midfielder Arrived in the summer of 2011, James is left winger who has transferred from Toolstation League One side Hengrove Athletic having moved into the Stoke Bishop area. James is a tricky winger who will be providing the ammunition for the forwards this year.

Jack Rivers – Forward A strong, powerfully built forward with a nice touch and plenty of potential, technically very sound, and if presented with the opportunity will put the ball in the net. Yet another former; Bristol Athletic, Hanham Athletic and Plymouth University player who arrived during October 2010.

Pete Newton-Smith – Forward Signed from Thornbury Town during the 2011/12 season, Pete is a player equally comfortable at centre back or centre forward, Pete is considered another good addition to Carmelo’s 1st team squad.

Rich Bray – Midfielder Brayer completed last season’s signings from Hanham Athletic, Rich is a cultured midfield player who has had a few injuries since his arrival. Big things are expected of Rich this season with a few goals chucked in for good measure. Shane Budding – Midfielder Shane arrived during the summer of 2011 after a few months away from the game following injuries, Shane was selected for the

Sam Burgess - Goalkeeper Sam has returned to the club after a season out of football, the former Henbury man who was ‘The Rocks’ Player of the season in 2011/12. The ‘big man’ is expected to be the first choice keeper and will dominate his area like he’s done in the past. Rhys Davis - Defender New signing from Bristol Academy, Rhys is19 and has previously played for Stoke Lane, and Bradley Stoke. A South West Counties winner with Filton Academy in 10/11, he’s a

13

stylish left back who is comfortable in possession and can deliver a decent cross when in forward positions. Jon Childs - Defender Jon is another new signing from Bristol Academy, the right back has good pace and a decent touch so will be challenging for a place in the match day squad. Alex Francis - Defender Alex has recently moved to Bristol with work and signs from ‘Continental Star’ of The Midland Football Combination, Alex is a tall pacey centre half who should prove a great addition to the new look squad. Alistair Bruce – Defender’ ‘Brucey’ is another new player recently moved in to the area, he played University football for Plymouth with a number of our other players and should fit in well. Nathan Bryer – Midfield / Forward Nathan ‘Shaggy’ Bryer is another returning player after playing for Odd Down in the Somerset County League last season, Shaggy is a goal scoring midfield player, the softly spoken player is a real competitor and if we can get him out on the field enough then he’ll be a huge boost to the new look squad. Jesus Herran Boxi – Midfield Our Spanish import is your archetypal Spanish player, neat on the ball, quick to close down the opposition and has a real eye for a goal; Jesus is a quiet lad but great things are expected of his first season in English football.

14

Carl Lakey - Forward Carl is an ex Yate Town player who’s played both Gloucestershire County and Southern League football for them, he’s equally adept out wide or up front and is a real livewire. Carl should be leading the line this year after moving from up Reserve team football. Tre Fearon - Midfield Tres is another player looking to step up from Reserve Team football this season, he is a dynamic wide player withl pace and strength, if Tres keeps listening then he could well force his way into a 1st team place. Tom Nunn – Centre Back Tom is an energetic, solid and calm centre back but is equally comfortable in playing anywhere across the back line and midfield. Tom is also a former Bristol Athletic, Hanham Athletic and Plymouth University player. Tom returns after a torrid time with injury throughout the 2011/12 campaign. Matt Beadle - Forward Matt has recently arrived with bags of experience for someone still young and ability in abundance, he can hold the ball up and get more than his fair share of goals, son of former Bristol City and Rovers legend Peter, Matt has also played Yate Town, Bridgwater Town, Almondsbury Town and more recently Shirehampton. Oshane West - Forward ‘Jerome’ steps up from the reserves this season, still only 17 but willing to listen and learn, the club are looking forward to watching the development of this young player.

Match Reports Tuesday April 30th 2013 Gloucestershire County League Thornbury Town 1 Kingswood 0 Thornbury Town secured a valuable 3 points on Tuesday evening with a narrow victory over Kingswood. Thorns started brightly and almost took the lead on 16 minutes when Steve Alexanders pass found Tom Webb in space with just the keeper to beat but Fox saved bravely at the winger’s feet. 10 minutes later Webb was in action again but this time at the other end of the park, heading clear a freekick. Play swung from end to end and on the half hour markSteve Alexander broke into the penalty area and having turned his defender laid the ball into the path of Danny Thompson, whose shot was saved by Fox diving low to his right. Five minutes later Thompson was set up again and his effort from the edge of the box was just too high. As half time approached Kingswood came more into the game and were awarded a penalty 5 minutes before the break after Ryan Mudd went down under a Ricki Lippiatt challenge. Mudd took the spot kick himself and although it was well struck Damian Freeman in

the Thorns goal pulled off a superb save to keep the scores level at the break. Town started the second half at a high tempo and nearly took the lead in the opening minute but no-one could get on to the end of Nathan Irwin’s cross and the ball was scrambled clear by the visitors defence. Kingswood then forced a series of corners but couldn’t create any clear opportunities whilst at the other end Fox saved well from Irwin. Kingswood’s Miller then found himself clear of the Thorns defence but shot wide as Freeman closed the angle. A sweeping pass from Lippiatt found Webb wide out left and his cross was met perfectly by Nathan Irwin whose goalbound effort was tipped over the bar by Fox. But 10 minutes later Fox was helpless as Thorns took the lead. Town played the ball out from defence and Nathan Sage found Danny Thompson in space 30 yards out and the striker’s screamer gave Fox no chance, with the ball finding the net before the keeper moved. Kingswood pressed in search of an equaliser and Hitchins, in space in the penalty area, lifted his effort over the bar. With 15 minutes to go Thompson almost repeated his earlier effort but this time Fox saved well and shortly after Tom Webb steered Luke Fanklin’s cross just wide of the post. Kingswood continued to search for the equaliser but Town’s defence were rarely troubled and comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure the win.

Tuesday April 23rd 2013 Gloucestershire County League Thornbury Town 1 Southmead CS Athletic 4 A poor first half performance cost Thornbury Town dear on Tuesday night as they found themselves 0 – 3 down after half an hour. Southmead attacked from the kick-off and were soon rewarded when in the third minute a move down the left saw the ball played into the penalty area where Mills found himself with plenty of time to turn and shoot home past Damian Freeman. Southmead continued to press forward and doubled their lead on 20 minutes, albeit a little fortunately, when Nathan Irwin’s headed clearance hit an opponent and the ball rebounded to Mills who was left an easy task of slotting the ball past Freeman. Thorns attacks were few and far between and the closest they came was on 25 min when a Tom Webb cross from the right just eluded Steve Alexander. Southmead virtually sealed the win on the half-hour mark following a quick counter-attack. Nathan Irwin’s cross from the right was cleared upfield with a quick route one ball over the top of the Thorns defence to find Rob Sivers in space and he took a couple of paces before firing low past Freeman. Thorns gradually came back into the game in the last 10 min of the half but rarely threatened Gribble in the visitors goal. A change of formation in the second half saw a much improved Thorns performance and they pulled a goal back in the 51st min-

26

ute when Ricky Lippiat was brought down in the penalty area. Tom Webb’s low spot kick gave Gribble no chance. Town almost pulled another goal back 5 minutes later when a long ball up to Steve Thompson found him clear of the visitors defence but his shot found the side netting. Thorns continued to press and looked much the better side in the second half but found it difficult to create any clearcut chances against the Southmead defence, efforts from Danny Thompson and Christian Irwin went just wide and Gribble pulled off a couple of saves from Steve Alexander and Steve Thompson Southmead were still a threat on the break and Damien Freeman did well to save from Sivers. With 5 minutes remaining Thorns almost grabbed a second but Alexander could not get onto the end of an inviting ball across the face of the Southmead goal and the ball was cleared quickly upfield to find Sivers unremarked and he was left with a simple chance of firing past Freeman to secure the win for Southmead.
