Thornbury Pen Pix Visitors History Vistors Pen Pix County League Around The Grounds Match Report
Dave Herbert Sportsmanship Cup Respect Programme Dissent is the key to making money
The League last season saw a reduction in yellow and red cards being issued throughout the season. Yellow cards were down from 845 to 708 and Red Cards saw a reduction from 72 to 67. Brimscombe and Thrupp topped the table with 23 yellow cards and one red card that saw them pick up a cheque for £400. Another five clubs also gained money as they stayed under the 45 point allocation, two more than the previous season. A special mention must go to Berkeley Town who were the only club not to receive a red card whilst at the other end of the scale Tuffley Rovers ended up with 11 beating the 10 by AXA FC the previous season. Once again the key this season will be dissent and looking to further improve the standards the League will still be offering £1,750 prize money to be shared amongst clubs staying below the 45 points total. One point for a yellow and three for a red will be deducted. These though will be for all offences and to try and stamp out the dissent side clubs will now be marked by referees on four categories:1. Behaviour of Players 2. Behaviour of Manager /Coach 3. Behaviour of Spectators. 4. Effectiveness of Captain controlling players. Also yellow cards for dissent and red cards for language will be taken into account. Prize money will be on offer on five occasions throughout the season to the club with the best record over a five game period. Over the past two seasons behaviour of participants has stabilised and in some cases improved and as we now enter a different era remember think before you speak as you could lose money.

Gaffer’s Notes
Today we welcome our local rivals, Berkeley Town, to the Mundys, in what I feel will be a keenly fought match. It also brings us to the end of a run of three consecutive home games. So far we have done well by following up on our 5-0 defeat of Chipping Sodbury by beating Bristol Academy 2-1 last Saturday. This required a more gritty performance as inevitably we had less of the ball than the week before. It was good to see though that the increased confidence players are beginning to have in each other is showing through. We defended well and were only undone by a crisp first touch angled through ball that found their number 10, arguably their best player, with a clear run on goal. Apart from that we were generally very tidy at the back with Rob Dent having very safe hands. In our attacking play we posed a threat throughout. Danny Thompson was unlucky not to have added to his tally in the first half especially when the keeper made a decent save from one of his on target efforts but Steve Alexander, following up, ensured we took the lead. Danny got his just desserts however when he rounded the keeper neatly to slot home mid-way through the second half. We created other chances as well and would have run out more comfortable winners had we taken them. We will need to blend the fluency of our game against Chipping Sodbury with the application we showed against Bristol Academy if we are to secure all 3 points. Next week we have the first of only 4 remaining away matched when we travel to high flying Elwood - should be a real contest. GAP SUPPLIES

Club History It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 when only friendly games were permitted. Formerly known as Thornbury Sports which was the amalgamation in 1933 of two teams within the town and the club as it is known today “Thornbury Town FC” originated in the early 1970’s. Mundy Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were sited in local places such as the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope a long standing sponsor of the club. Early records show club honours such as the: 1949-50 - District League Division Three Champions. 1956-57 - Premier Combination Champions. 1965-66 – District League Division Two Champions. 1968-69 saw the club (Thornbury Sports) became founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded at the Mundys. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and were accepted into the Western League however due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up-to the leagues required standards were unable to take the next step up. Relegation unfortunately followed in 1976-77 and the club once again entered the Bristol Premier Combination. The following 20 plus years saw Thornbury Town strive to regain their former status in the Gloucestershire County League however never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title and thus ensuring promotion. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 198586 and 1989-90 unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. During the late 1990’s the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached losing narrowly to Dursley Town. The following season saw the club finish 4th in the Bristol Premier Combination League, having topped the table for most of the campaign, only to fall away in the latter stages of the season. 200102 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a
5
run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record which still stands to this day. The league and cup double eluded the club when they were defeated by Sea Mills in the League Cup Final. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, £16k spent on improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County league with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons, after topping the league at some stage during each campaign. Silverware did however come our way during this period when we beat Taverners on penalties, after a 2-2 draw, to lift the Stroud Charity Cup in 2003-04 at Shortwood United’s ground. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side under the management of Terry Payton in order to maintain Youth development within the club and they gained entry to the Gloucestershire County Youth League. Following a couple of indifferent seasons when relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination league was only just averted at the end of the 2006– 07 season, a new management committee and first team management team was appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager, coming to the club from Sea Mills Park and bringing with him Carl Derosa as his assistant. With an initial three year strategy, which was extended to four came to fruition during the 2009-10 season when after a steady first half to the season a tremendous winning run of ten league games, the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title was won for the first time in club history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This will further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment. However, the coming season brings different challenges for the club with a new 1st Team management team of Richard Lee, Wayne Harwood and Nathan Irwin in place and with the addition of a number of new players the club is once more looking to challenge for silverware across all levels of the club. December saw Richard Lee step down as First Team manager due to work commitments, with Roy Irwin taking the helm at the club.

Thornbury Town - Pen Pix Rob Dent Joined from Alveston this year, a terrific shot stopper and once cricket is finally finished he will be a great asset to the club as a whole. Bound to make the club a lot of money in bar takings and if they sold fags as well, I think High Tower could have a lodger. Steve Alexander Old man of the team but definitely still one of fittest players in the squad. Will work his socks off up front and knows where the back of the net is. Always has a football with him wherever he goes, even when he is on his skate board. Pete Fowler Mister steady, quality in the air, good leader and is Thornbury through and through. Always in the right place at the right time. Had a bad year last season with injuries so fingers crossed that he manages to stay fully fit this term. Nathan Sage Solid young defender with a very mature head on his shoulders, fantastic prospect and is always keen to listen and learn, apart from on the pool table when playing doubles with Pete Fowler. Joined from the Under 18s in 2010 Ricki Lippiatt Naturally gifted footballer who could probably do a good job anywhere on the pitch, even scored with is swinger(left foot) in a friendly this season. Constant talker and organiser who will have an important role to play this year. Alex Lippiatt Goalkeeper. He is definitely a major part of the life and soul in the club, loves the banter and taking the mickey out of everybody, Top lad and on top of that not a bad keeper either. Tom Webb Another fantastic product of the promising Under 18s. Exciting left footed player who is comfortable playing on either wing, Loves to take players on but isn’t afraid to track back and put his foot in either. Another one who has a fantastic future ahead of him. James Willott The word character doesn’t give James enough justice, quality person to have around the club in terms of banter although looking at his wardrobe, he must have had a few run ins with the fashion police. Left footed winger although is just as comfortable on his right, loves to get at his opponent and put crosses into the box and is capable of scoring a few goals himself. Nathan Irwin Player coach and the fittest player at the club bar none although his 2 brothers Ross and christian come a close 2nd and 3rd respectively. Is Mr versatile and can comfortably play in a number a positions. His work rate will hopefully drive the rest of the players on through games. Came back to the club this year from Tytherington Rocks.

Ross Irwin Another player back at the club from Tytherington Rocks, likes to get on the ball and has a great range of passing. Naturally fit and is another who is very versatile. Quality right foot and an asset at set pieces. Dan Thompson Quick striker who is full of tricks, could be the missing link between midfield and strikers. Always lively and a handful to mark, manages to create space for himself where there is none to attack people with pace and get a shot off from distance. Another fantastic prospect. Rob Cave Joined from Tytherington Rocks in the close season. Very loyal, reliable and consistent performer, he is a young versatile player who loves a 50/50. can play anywhere along the back or midfield. Scary in the tackle and even scarier in the shower. Steve Thompson Intelligent player who can play as a striker or in the hole tucked in behind. very unselfish, creates a lot of chances for others but also scores a fair few himself. Big season expected of him. Dean Morgan Striker who hasn’t played on a Saturday for a little while now, has all the ingredients to be a great striker, Quality left foot, knows where the back of the net is and is always keen to learn. Sets himself personal targets and I am hoping he reaches it this season. Off the field, has a celebrity lookalike as a Dad who is a spit of Sir Clive Woodward!!! Christian Irwin A cool and composed left footer who can play anywhere in the back line or centre midfield. fantastic work rate and talker, loves to get on the ball and boss the game. Terrific club man.
GEMS
Matt Morrison Cultured midfielder who always seems to drag five yards of space with him. great range of passes and makes the game look easy. Sammy Lippiatt A full back who has a sweet left foot and likes to think he is the free kick expert. Missed the whole 07/08 season through injury but now back to full fitness. Joined from Sea Mills in 2007.

Visitors History Founded in 1898, Berkeley Town Football Club joined the Dursley & District League and remained there until 1923. The club was then elected to the Northern Senior League, but stayed only two years before returning to the Dursley & District League. It was not until 1946 that Northern Senior League football returned to Berkeley but this time the stay was longer, some 43 years. This ended in 1989, when winning the Division One championship took the club into the Gloucestershire County League for the first time. Unfortunately this only lasted two seasons before the club returned to the Northern Senior League. The 1998/99 season (ironically the clubs centenary) was a disastrous one for the club as the first team were relegated to Stroud League Division 1. However, four seasons of rebuilding culminated in the Stroud League Division 1 title and promotion back to the Northern Senior League Division 2. Season 2002/03 also saw the team win the County Cup and Stroud Charity Cup for a remarkable treble under the leadership of Terry Stevenson and his assistant Gary Watkins. Promotion was achieved at the first time of asking the following season, taking the club straight into Division 1 where they would join local rivals such as Sharpness, Cam and Kingswood. In their first season, under the leadership of new manager Phil Orsborn, the team finished a respectable 4th place as a result of several memorable performances against their local rivals. It was the nucleus of this team, coupled with the experienced management of Dougie Gray and Steve Billett, that became champions of the Northern Senior League in the 2005/06 season in only the second season of competing in the league, leading to a return to the County League after an absence of 16 years. After a slow start to the 2006/07 season, the Hunters finished the season with a respectable four wins, and three draws from ten games to finish well clear of relegation. Further improvement was to follow in the 2007/08 season, when under the guidance of former managers Terry Stevenson and Phil Orsborn, achieved a respectable 12th position with a young and inexperienced side. The 2008/09 and 2009/10 season saw the club go through a transitional period, with many reserve team and younger players given the chance to play in the first team. Despite the sides inexperience it was still able to maintain its County League status. In the 2009/10 season the first team reached the final of the Stroud Charity Cup, but despite a fantastic team effort were narrowly beaten on penalties by local rivals Slimbridge. The 2010/11 season proved to be the clubs most successful to date in the County League as they achieved a respectable 11th place under the management duo of Phil Orsborn and Lee Mason. An excellent team spirit was formed, which led to a number of excellent results against the top sides in the league.

Around The Grounds... Henbury remain top after a win at home to Rockleaze Rangers, but Tuffley Rovers move into second place with a win at Kingswood. Cribbs Friends Life drop to third place after being held to a draw at home to D.R.G. Stapleton. Two penalties were the order of the day as Berkeley Town and Longlevens drew 1-1 at Station Road. The first 20 minutes produced very little in the way of chances although the visitors had a couple of free kicks from way outside the box that never troubled Ewan Prentice in the home goal as they both cleared the crossbar. Berkeley’s first effort on goal came after 30 minutes a Sam Strickland shot that also cleared the crossbar. In the 36th minute the deadlock was broken after Mike Reece brought down Andy Trout in the box for a penalty. Craig Martin was the player handed the responsibility to try and put the visitors ahead from the spot and his powerful shot went just under Prentice as he dived to try and save. The home side failed to get beyond the visitors defense which resulted in a lot of midfield play with no penetration from either side. The game changed in the 71st minute when Berkeley were beginning to push forward more and the referee gave a handball in the box against Longlevens defender Ed Smyllie giving Berkeley the chance to draw level from the penalty spot. Sam Strickland stepped up to take the kick and sent Martin the wrong way. The home side took heart from the situation and began to push the visitor’s defense hard. Berkeley were definitely looking as though they could win the game in the late stages and a cross from new signing Tom Patterson found Mackie again but Martin kept the shot out. Henbury’s narrow 3-2 victory over local rivals Rockleaze Rangers keeps them on the top of the table. The home side got off to a good start taking the lead on 12 minutes when Ben Sandle crossed into the box and Vinny Coote fired a low shot under the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes into the second half Rockleaze were level as Shane Budding cut into the box and curled his shot around O’Connell in the home goal. Ben Sandle and Aaron Rosser interchanged passes before sending a cross into the box where Eddie Howell was waiting to dink the ball over the keeper to put Henbury back in front. Henbury went further ahead in the 80th minute as Ben Sandle crossed in to the box for Eddie Howell to head past the keeper for a 3-1 lead. Rockleaze hit back four minutes later from a Rob Lee corner that was headed home by Aaron Day. This spurred the visitors on and Henbury were put under considerable pressure for the remaining six minutes but hung on for the win.

Cribbs Friends Life were 2-0 up by half time but were pegged back to 2-2 by the final whistle. Simon Bone headed the home side into the lead after 33 minutes after Jack Kinnerly had broken down the left and sent over an inch perfect cross. The second came just a minute before the break as Kinnerly’s in swinging corner from the right was met by Dominic Graffagnino. D.R.G reduced the arrears in the 62nd minute from a Fabian McCarthy free kick that was swung into the box where Joe Galsworthy lunged at the ball as it looked to be going wide it took a deflection off Chris Kite and finished up in the back of the net. The visitors grabbed a point in time added at the end of the game from along ball pumped up field and as it bounce goal wards Luke Bryan managed to lift the ball over the home keeper to salvage a point. Their eighth draw of the season. Taverners gained a good 3-1 victory at Bishops Cleeve Reserves It was the home side who took an early lead when a long throw from Alex Buckland was helped on by Nick Rhodes for Stuart Midwinter to volley home. Taverners hit back on 30 minutes when Josh Jones picked up on a mistake by home Keeper Dan Greenhouse to level. Then a two goal strike on 40 and 44 minutes by Luke Bedwell for the visitors gave them a two goal cushion. Neither side was able to add to the score in the second half. Tuffley Rovers could go top if they can win their game in hand after their 3-1 success at Kingswood. They showed their intent as early as the 5th minute Jivan Munroe gave them the lead. Kingswood were well in the game and hit back right on half time when Ryan Mudd broke clear to drive the ball home from 14 yards. In the second half the home side had several good chances to take the lead but Ryan Mudd was guilty of missing those chances. The game took a turn for the worse when Kingswood’s Josh Stokes was sent of for a second yellow card. Rovers took full advantage and Kacey Johnstone’s 20 yard strike in the 79th minute put them ahead. Warren Mann sealed the victory in the 90th minute when he scored from close range. Chipping Sodbury Town’s woes continue as the went down 3-0 at home to Hanham Athletic Callum Garner gave the visitors the lead on 22 minutes, then they went further ahead in the 46th minute from a James Shipman strike. James Pocock netted a third from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute and then Sodbury were reduced to 10 men when Ben Hobson was dismissed. Town will be looking to improve their performances over the next few game to try and haul themselves away from the bottom of the table.

Match Reports First Team - David Wilson Homes Gloucestershire County League Thornbury Town 5 Chipping Sodbury 0 Saturday 7th January 2012 Thornbury continued their recent improved form with a deserved victory against Bristol Academy. In an entertaining game, Thorns created numerous chances but keeper Rob Dent also had to be at his best to pull off some important saves. Opening exchanges were fairly even and Town almost took the lead in the 10th minute when Dean Morgan goal bound shot was deflected for a corner. From the resultant James Willott kick, Pete Fowler’s firm header was tipped over the bar by the Academy keeper. Within a couple of minutes youngster Nathan Sage came to Town’s rescue clearing Mateus’ shot off the line after the striker had rounded Dent in the Thorns goal. In the 17th minute the visitors were caught sleeping when a quickly taken freekick by Rob Dent found Danny Thompson wide right. He outstripped his marker but his shot was parried by the keeper but only into the path of Steve Alexander who tapped the ball home into an empty net. Alexander almost doubled his tally when he latched onto a Sam Lippiatt through ball a couple of minutes later but his shot was too close to the keeper who was able to push the ball away for a corner. Midway through the half Nathan Irwin had a shot blocked on the line after the Academy keeper had spilt a high cross. After this Academy enjoyed a spell ofpressure but the home defence held firm until the 32nd minute when Thorns gave possession away cheaply in the opposition half. A long ball forward saw Mateus beat the offside trap and he calmly slotted the ball past Rob Dent to level the scores. The remainder of the half saw play flow from end to end and whilst there were chances created, none were taken. Thorns started the second half brightly and within a couple of minutes a jinking run and shot from Dan Thompson bought a full-length save from the Academy keeper as he touched the ball round the post from corner. A minute later another Thompson goal bound effort was deflected by a defender for a corner but in the 53rd minute Town finally regained the lead when Dan Thompson latched onto a Christian Irwin through ball, rounded the keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net. Midway through the half Pete Fowler had a great chance to extend Thorns lead following a Nathan Irwin ball over the top of the visitors defence but with just the goalkeeper to beat he pulled his shot wide of the far post. Moments later the Academy keeper went way outside his penalty area with the ball but his long pass forward only found Ricki Lippiatt whose shot from inside his own half was headed off the line by defender. The game continued to flow from end to end with both sides creating chances but with both goalkeepers pulling off some good saves. The Thorns defence held firm as Town earned themselves another deserved three points.
