Gaffers notes Today is our first home game for a month - our last match here was a 1-0 reversal against DRG in the League cup on the 20th August. Since then we have had 4 away games with some very pleasing performances and some far less so. Last Saturday saw us travel to Ellwood where despite a lot of possession we rarely troubled a team that were reduced to 10 men after 10 minutes. The only high point was a very well taken goal by Dan Bendall - his first for the club. The previous Wednesday we had a GFA cup match away at Yate. This was a classic game of two halves. In the first half, despite going behind, we equalised through a smart Steve Thompson finish and bossed the game for long periods and were clearly on top. Second half started brightly but two goals in quick succession for the home team took it away from us with a final score of 4-1 The other two games were far better winning 4-0 against newly promoted Frampton and then taking all three points away at Henbury in a 5 goal thriller. We played some really good football in both games pressing the opposition when they had the ball and keeping it well when we had it. We will need to replicate these winning performances today against high flying Tuffley should be a terrific contest.

thornbury town history It is understood that football has been played in Thornbury from around 1898 and formerly known as Thornbury Sports which was the amalgamation of two teams within the town, the club as it is known today “Thornbury Town FC” originated in the early 1970’s. Mundy Fields has been the home of the club since the end of World War Two although changing facilities were in the Exchange Hotel, which is now The Knot of Rope a long-standing sponsor of the club. Early records show club honours such as the: 1949-50 - District League Division 3 1956-57 - Premier Combination 1965-66 – District League Division 2 Thornbury Sports were founder members of the Gloucestershire County League and spectator figures in excess of 500 were regularly recorded. In 1971 the club finished third in the Gloucestershire County League and was accepted into the Western League, however, due to difficulties in bringing the facilities up to required standards were unable to take the next step up. 1976/77 season saw relegation back to the Bristol Premier Combination. The following 20+ years saw Thornbury
Town strive to regain their status in the Gloucestershire County League however never really threatening to take the Premier Combination title and thus ensuring promotion. The only success during these lean years was reaching the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup unfortunately on both occasions loser’s medals were received. In the late 90s, the Club maintained its strong focus on developing local talent and this eventually bore fruit in 1999 when the final of the Stroud Charity Cup was reached, losing narrowly to Dursley Town. 2001-02 season saw the management team of Dave Wiffill and Steve Burbage take the reins, which brought instant success winning the Bristol Premier Combination title by 13 points and a return to the Gloucestershire County League. This followed a run of thirteen consecutive league wins a club record, which still stands to this day. In preparation for the return to County League football the summer of 2002 saw a lot of hard work undertaken on the Mundy facilities with the building of dug-outs, £16k spent on improved drainage and revamping of the dressing rooms. All this work appeared to have been worth while with the club establishing itself back in the Gloucestershire County League with a creditable 7th league position for the next three seasons. Silverware did however come our way during this period following a penalty shootout over Taverners. The 2003-04 season, also saw the formation of an Under-18’s side in order to maintain Youth development within the club.
7
Following a couple of indifferent seasons when relegation threatened a new management committee and first team management team were appointed. Dave Lippiatt took over as first team manager. With an initial three year strategy, which was extended to four, success was achieved during the 2009-10 season when after a tremendous winning run of ten league games, the Surridge Gloucestershire County League title was won for the first time in club history. 2010 also saw the milestone achievement of the long awaited coming together of the two local football clubs “Thornbury Town FC” and “Thornbury Falcons FC” now, under one club management umbrella of Thornbury Town FC without losing the
heritage and identity of Thornbury Falcons. This continues to further enhance the long term development within the local community for junior, youth and senior football. In the 2010-11 season the final of the Les James Cup Final was reached, which resulted in a penalty shoot-out disappointment against Henbury Town. After a period of rebuilding in terms of 1st Team management structure manager Roy Irwin assisted by Bill Bond is looking forward to the challenges of the coming season and with the addition of a number of new players the club is once more looking to challenge for silverware across all levels of the club.

thornbury town PLAYERS Rob Dent - Goalkeeper. A terrific shot stopper and a great asset to the club as a whole as one of the senior players. A keen cricketer who loves to play all pub games, especially for a wager, and is remarkably successful at taking his mates to the cleaners. Steve Alexander – Centre Forward. One of the most mature players in the squad, if not the “Old man” of the team. Still one of fittest players in the squad he works his socks off up front and knows where the back of the net is. Always has a football with him wherever he goes, even when he is on his skate board. Won Managers Player of the year award for his efforts in 2011/12
under 18s set up. Maturing into a very accomplished left sided player who is comfortable playing either full back or on the wing. Great balance and great determination, loves to take players on but isn’t afraid to track back and put his foot in either. Another one who has a great future ahead of him. James Willott – Midfield. Part of the club’s brains trust. Left footed winger although is just as comfortable on his right, he works hard with a good degree of skill. Talks on the pitch and off it – at all times!! Top lad Nathan Irwin - Midfield. The fittest player at the club bar none. Is a very versatile and skilled player who can comfortably play in a number a positions and a useful goalscorer as well. His work rate drives other players on. This is second season back at the club returning from Tytherington Rocks last season. Ross Irwin - Midfield. Missed out most of last season with injury but now back to fitness. Good control and keeps the ball for the side better than anyone. Has a great range of passing. Naturally fit and is another who is very versatile. Another player back at the club from Tytherington Rocks last season.
Pete Fowler. Centre Back. Mister steady Eddie, quality in the air, good leader, stout defender and is Thornbury through and through. Always in the right place at the right time. Had a good year last season deservingly winning the players player award.
Danny Thompson – Striker. Exceptionally quick feet as well as being very quick over the ground. He is full of tricks and has a terrific shot; he is a great link between midfield and attack. Always lively and a handful to mark as he manages to create space for himself.
Nathan Sage - Defender. Solid and thoughtful young man with a very mature footballing head on his shoulders, great prospect who is learning the game following him stepping up from the under 18s in 2010. Will be a top player for many, many years to come.
Rob Cave - Midfield . Joined from Tytherington Rocks at the beginning of last season. Now returned to full fitness after an interrupted season last year. Very loyal, reliable and capable performer, he is a young versatile player who loves a challenge. Can play midfield or at the back. Great guy to have around the club.
Ricki Lippiatt - Centre Back. Naturally gifted footballer who reads the game really well, is rarely caught out of position and times his tackles to perfection. An organiser who is always talking and a natural leader who will have an important role to play again this year. Tom Webb - Midfield. Came through the club’s
Steve Thompson - Striker. Really intelligent player with a great touch who can play as a striker or tucked in behind. Works hard for the team and is very unselfish, creates a lot of chances for others but also scores a fair few himself. Missed a lot of last season through in-
9
jury so he is keen to get back into the scoring groove this year. Dean Morgan - Striker. Joined the club last season has all the ingredients to be a great finisher, quality left foot, very, very good close control knows where the back of the net is. Always keen to learn he has struck up good relationship with fellow strikers and will be keen to top the goal scoring chart for the club. Jordan Dunning – Goalkeeper. Came to the club as under 18’s keeper last season and has continued to develop and is already a quality performer and tremendous prospect for the future. We are pleased to have him with the club. Christian Irwin – Defender. A cool and composed left footer who can play anywhere in the back line or centre midfield. His fitness gives him a terrific work rate - he loves to compete and never ever gives up. Cracking club man. Dan Bendall – Striker. Has just joined the club having played for fellow County League club Chipping Sodbury last year. He has a startling turn of pace which can make him completely unplayable. We are looking forward to having him in the club this term.
10
Sam Lippiatt – Defender. Has been with the club for a number of seasons now. Can play across the back and in midfield but is particularly effective as an attacking full back. He has a cultured left foot which he uses to good effect. Wants to play in the Bergkamp role but we don’t let him. Phil Williams – Defender. Returned to playing for the club at the end of last season when he finished his university year. Has pace in abundance and this coupled with his well timed tackles makes him a stand out prospect for the club. Mark Viner – Midfield. A very experienced player who is a consistent and tenacious performer in the centre of the park. Has a never say die attitude but also a very good footballer and who is natural leader on the pitch. Great guy to have in the club. Dan Wood – Defender. Tough tackling competitor with a good footballing brain and a cool temperament. Started playing again this season following a long period out with a serious injury. Good to have him back. Alex Lippiatt - Goalkeeper. Has played for Thornbury over a few years now and is well known in the club for his banter. He is a good keeper who has very quick reflexes.
tuffley rovers history The late Donald E Hall founded Tuffley Rovers FC in 1929. The Club’s Headquarters were in a former railway carriage, which served as Mr Hall’s Boot and Shoe repair shop on the Stroud Road at Tuffley in the City Of Gloucester. The Club started its playing life in the North Gloucestershire League. Senior XI Championship honours include that of the North Gloucestershire League and Stroud and District League (4 times) and in 1987/1988 the Club were Champions of the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League and gained promotion to the Gloucestershire County League. After two seasons of consolidation the Club won the County League Title in 1990/1991 and their application to join the Hellenic League was successful and they were accepted into Hellenic Division One. Progress continued as in the 1992/1993 season Rovers were Champions of Division One and also Division One League Cup Winners and after promotion competed in the Premier Division of the Hellenic League from 1993/1994 regularly finishing in the top half of the table. The 1998/1999 season saw Tuffley win the Norman Matthew’s Floodlit Cup defeating Carterton Town in the final.
and League Cup, unfortunately losing out on both occasions. Promotion however, was not possible as reserve teams were not allowed at that point to enter the Gloucestershire County League and progress further up the pyramid system. The Club continued to thrive in the Hellenic League and managed to win the Floodlit Cup again in the 2002/2003 season defeating Brackley Town over two legs in the Final. However the ever changing ground grading requirements to remain in the Hellenic League and the financial strain these improvements imposed on the Club forced Tuffley Rovers to make the decision to withdraw from the Hellenic League in 2005 and settle for local football within Gloucestershire. After a difficult start Rovers were crowned champions of Division 2 of the Northern Senior League in the 2005/2006 season and were promoted to Division 1. After a slow start the team put together a consistent run and managed to claim the Division 1 Title as well as win the GFA Senior Amateur Cup and reach the final of the Reg Davis Memorial League Cup. On its return to the Gloucestershire County League, the Club finished a very creditable 4th (2007-08) but the summer of 2008 saw a number of senior players retire and the next season a much younger team finished a slightly disappointing 11th (08-09) but with a years experience gained the Rovers challenged again at the top of the table for most of the next season before finishing in 3rd place (2009-10). Last season saw some variable performances in the League with a final finishing position of 6th. This disappointment was outweighed by achieving a great run in the GFA Challenge Trophy narrowly missing out to Shortwood United in the Final at GFA Headquarters late in April.
Whilst the Club enjoyed this success, the 2nd XI and 3rd XI also gained promotion and championship honours. The 1998/1999 season saw the 2nd XI win the Northern Senior League and reach the finals of both the County Cup

first team match reports Saturday 25th August Gloucestershire County League Frampton United 0 Thornbury Town 4 Thornbury Town secured their first league points of the season with a comfortable victory at County League new boys Frampton United. Following two convincing wins in their last couple of games the home side started confidently and almost to ok the lead from a corner after 13 minutes, the ball being cleared off the line by the Thorns defence. Town gradually imposed themselves on the game and the home defence started rocking on 25 minutes, Steve Alexander’s shot being pushed round the post for a corner. Thorns to ok the lead they deserved on the half-hour mark when a great move down the left involving Sam Lippiatt and Tom Webb saw a low cross into the 6 yard box ste ered into the net by Nathan Irwin. On 38 minutes Sam Lippiatt was again involved when he played the ball into Steve Thompson who threaded a pass through to Steve Alexander whose low drive gave the ke eper no chance. Thorn should have extended their lead a couple of minutes later but Pete Fowler’s header from a Dan Thompson fre ekick went wide of the post. In first half stoppage time Alexander scored a superb
20
second when he curled his shot past the ke eper from just inside the penalty area. Thorns started the second half how they finished the first and should have extended their lead 2 minutes in when Lippiatt’s inviting cross from the left was missed by Steve Thompson and Nathan Irwin sco oped his shot over the bar from 2 yards out. Despite their early pressure Thorns could not extend their lead any further and the home side gradually came into the game, their centre forward driving over the bar when well-placed. Town scored their fourth in the 65th minute when Pete Fowler played the ball out wide to Dan Thompson whose cross to the back of the box was met by brother Steve with a rasping shot that gave the ke eper no chance. To their credit the home side continued to press forward and Rob Dent pulled off a couple of go od saves and Frampton also hit the bar. However Thorns almost extended their lead in the dying seconds when Steve Alexander couldn’t quite reach Dan Bendall’s and then the home ke eper saved well at Dean Morgan’s fe et.
Saturday 1st September Gloucestershire County League Henbury 2 Thornbury Town 3 Last Saturday’s trip to league leaders Henbury saw Thornbury Town come away with a deserved 3-2 win which was more emphatic than the scoreline suggests. Thorns were the best fo otballing side on the day and showed their intentions after just two minutes when Rob Cave’s through ball to Danny Thompson saw the wide man outpace the defence but drove his shot wide of the target. Surprisingly it was Henbury who to ok the lead after 14 minutes when a mixup in the Thorns defence saw the ball rebound to Aaron
Anglin who went down under a challenge by Nathan Irwin. Henbury skipper Eddie Howell made no mistake from the penalty spot sending Thorns young ke eper Jordan Dunning the wrong way. The home side weren’t ahead for long, Town drawing level in the 20th minute when a move down the left involving Sam Lippiatt and Danny Thompson saw Thompson cut inside, play a low ball into the fe et of Dean Morgan who turned his defender before firing a low shot past O’Connell. Both sides then had opportunities to take the lead, Henbury’s Sandle and Rosser both firing shots wide of the post whilst Clark headed over from 6 yards out. Meanwhile Dan Thompson shot straight at the Henbury ke eper when well-placed and moments before half-time strong run from Steve Alexander set up Dean Morgan but this time the striker’s low shot was saved by O’Connell.
Town started the second half the brighter and Danny Thompson brought the best out of O’Connell in the 50th minute with a great shot that he managed to push away for a corner. 5 minutes later Thorns to ok a deserved lead when Nathan Irwin’s cross in from the left deceived the Henbury defence, the ball cre eping in at the far post. A minute later Town extended their lead after Alexander had broken into the box turned the ball back for Dan Thompson to sho ot, O’Connell saved but the ball rebounded to Rob Cave, who played a one-two with Dean Morgan before driving home an unstop-
pable shot. 10 minutes later O’Connell came to the home side’s rescue when he tipped Steve Alexander’s shot over the bar and the ke eper then saved a Dean Morgan effort when he was put through on goal.
The home side pushed forward in an attempt to get back into the game and 10 minutes from time substitute Mills got behind the Town defence and sent a low cross in from the right which wasn’t cleared and Bebbington, unmarked at the far post, had the easiest of chances to tap home. After this the Thorns defence was untroubled and the final whistle came to signal a deserved thre e points.
Wednesday 12th September GFA County Cup Yate Town Reserves 4 Thornbury Town 1 Thorns went out of the County Cup at the first hurdle when Yate se emed to punish every mistake that they made. Town started quite brightly but in the 14th minute they lost possession in midfield and the home side fed the ball out to Belton in space on the left and he drove the ball into the net giving Dent no chance. Thornbury responded well and a few minutes later Dan Bendall jinked his way through the defence and cut the ball back but Fre eman in the Yate goal
21
made a double save from shots from Rob Cave and James Willott. Town equalised with a well worked goal in the 26 minute when Dan Thompson ran through the defence from the right before passing to Willott whose cross into the 6 yard box was ste ered home by Steve Thompson. Thorns enjoyed a great spell of pressure after this with Danny Thompson causing all sorts of problems for the home defence. 10 minutes before the break Nathan Irwin surged forward down the right, laid the ball out to Dan Thompson whose cross across the face of the goal beat the home defence but neither Dan Bendall nor Steve Thompson could get on the end to ste er the ball into the net. Moments later Pete Fowler came to Thorns rescue, clearing the ball after Rob Dent was caught in possession. A couple minutes before the break Town almost to ok the lead that they deserved when Mark Viner’s through ball found Rob Cave but just as he shaped to ste er the ball past the ke eper a desperate tackle from a defender ste ered the ball wide for a corner. The early stages of the second half saw Fre eman again come to Yate’s rescue when he pulled off a double save from Steve Thompson and then moments later Dan Bendall surged down the right before passing into the path of Nathan Irwin who shot was again well saved by Fre eman. Thorns were left to rue these missed chances when 10 minutes into the half Yate to ok the lead, heading home a corner. On the hour mark the game was as go od as over when a defensive lapse saw Thorns try to let the ball roll out for a goal kick but it was retrieved and cut back into the path of first-team manager Rob Cousins who drove home from 25 yards out. A couple of minutes later Yate were awarded a penalty after Christian Irwin was judged to have brought down a Yate striker but Tom Knighton blasted his spot kick over the bar. However midway through the half Yate scored their
22
fourth when a misplaced pass out of defence saw the ball played into the path of Knighton who made up for his earlier miss by firing home off Rob Dent’s body. Whilst Thorns tried to press forward to put some respectability back onto the scoreline the Yate defence held firm and they secured their passage through to the second round of the cup.
Saturday 1st September Gloucestershire County League Ellwo od 2 Thornbury Town 1 Thornbury Town came off second best against 10 man Ellwo od in an uninspiring fixture last Saturday, suffering their first away defeat of the season. The home side, kicking down the slope, made their usual quick start, putting the Thorns defence under pressure. However their plans were undone as early as the 9th minute when Wildin was sent off for a two fo oted challenge on Nathan Irwin. The game developed into a midfield battle with neither defence being seriously troubled, Ellwo od’s first shot on goal being a long-range effort that was comfortably saved by Jordan Dunning. Midway through the half Nathan Irwin’s long ball forward found Steve Thompson who set up Steve Alexander. Whe big striker shrugged off his marker but his shot was just wide of the post. On the half-hour mark, Thorns patient buildup saw a fine effort from Steve Thompson being saved at full stretch by the Ellwo od ke eper. 5 minutes before the break, some po or defending saw Ellwo od striker Roberts and Dunning collide in the penalty area. The refere e awarded a penalty which Mason duly dispatched. The second half saw the home side chase and harry the Thorns all over the park and Town created little to trouble the home defence. In the 55th minute Ellwo od were awarded a
fre e kick on the left which was knocked into the 6 yard box and although the first effort was cleared, Matt Addiss backhe eled the ball into the net through the crowded 6 yard box. With a two-goal advantage the home side were able to sit back and although Town pressed forward to try to get back into the game the home defence was rarely troubled. As the game rolled into stoppage time, Ollie Rawnsley won a challenge in the middle of the park and the ball broke forward into the path of Dan Bendall who left his marker in his tracks before chipping the ball over the ke eper’s head into the net for a consolation goal.
