m Fro Ed... the

Welcome to the April Sentinella Magazine and our 200th edition! Yes, 16 years and 6 months ago this little magazine started out as a little booklet and has grown throughout the years into, as some say, ‘the bible of Axarquia!’ We would like to thank all our advertisers, readers and friends who have supported us during the ups and the downs during this time.

Continuing on with the thanks, I would like to thank everyone who sent me messages of congratulations and who donated money and food items in aid of the Maroma Trek on Sunday 28th February, when along with six friends, I was challenged to climb to the top of Mount Maroma. Initially we set a target of 250 euros, but I’m delighted to say we exceeded that and reached a grand total of 1,143.02 euros. We have successfully bought a wide selection of food and cleaning products and dropped it all off at the local food bank in Torre del Mar; we have been informed that it has been distributed to around 40 families in the local area. We are all chuffed to bits about this, so a massive thank you to everyone who supported us. You can read all about the hike on pages 30, 31 and 32.

We are also pleased to say that last month, we finally launched the new Sentinella website: www.thesentinella.com so if you get a moment, please do have a look around it. There are some great features on there, such as the ‘Events’ section which will ensure that you never miss another event again. Subscribe to the calendar and you will see each time we add an event — there are not so many at the moment, but in time there will be and you can be reassured that you will get to hear about everything going on in the area, sent directly to your inbox! Another great feature is that you can search the listings for ‘Coupon Offers’. Why pay more if you don’t have to? Visit some of the places that are offering coupon codes — currently in the food and drink section — simply locate the coupon code on the listing and relay the code to the owner to receive the offer.

Strange News

In the ‘Directory’ section there are plenty of useful numbers for police stations, medical centres, markets, magistrate courts, post offices, ITV centre, railways, national holidays etc, along with contact details and opening hours where applicable. This list will be updated regularly with new places. Then we have the ‘Blog’ section where you can search the categories for more information on the Axarquia villages, businesses, cuisine, fiestas and events, legal and financial issues, things to do and a section for other local things about the area. And finally, of course, there are the hundreds of business listings for you to search; we have made it really easy for you to make contact with the businesses from whom you may want further information. With all this, together with this month’s edition of The Sentinella, I think we have it covered in print and online for both readers and advertisers! Happy Easter, everyone — don’t forget to enter our ‘eggciting’ competition ‘How do you eat yours?’, on page 92 Good luck to you all!

DEADLINE FOR MAY TUESDAY 20TH APRIL Reservations: 664 210 468 Email: sales@thesentinella.com

Lassie come home The story of a Cheshire border collie which was missing for nearly three weeks before her own mum found her has warmed the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people. Sheepdog Chloe had been with her new family for less than 24 hours before she managed to leap out of a six-foot high enclosure on their farm. The Allison family, from near Knutsford, were distraught and all seemed lost when the two-year-old pooch had not returned home for nearly three weeks. But Chloe's mum Seren was drafted and deployed in an area of woodland where the missing dog had been spotted, and she immediately picked up a scent before trotting off in pursuit. Within minutes, Seren had discovered where her pup was and ushered her safely back to the Allison family, who broke down in tears at the emotional reunion. Mum-of-three Marcelle Allison, 38, said: “It was an incredibly emotional moment.” The story reached more than 2.5m people on Facebook, and has been read more than 200,000 times.

Mobile home A couple have worked to turn a horsebox, which they bought for £3,500, into a modern bijou home on wheels. And there’s even space for guests to sleepover. Architectural designer Sophie Frykfors von Hekkel, 30, and her hairdresser partner Lalli Castiglione, 31, spent £12,000 on refurbishing the 7.5-ton horsebox. Measuring 20ft by 6ft 6in, the renovated property includes a downstairs living space, kitchen, bathroom with shower, home office and a sofa lounge area that can convert into a dining room or spare bedroom. There’s a ladder in place of stairs to take you up to the double bedroom, and the home is powered by solar panels. Sophie says that lockdown gave them the time to work on the renovation project. She had wanted to own a home, but couldn’t afford a mortgage. “Now our living expenses are down to £50 a month for water and gas – plus the diesel to drive our home somewhere else if we feel like it when travel restrictions are lifted,”she said.

Strange News (Continued)

Catch a falling star A fireball that lit up the skies over the UK recently is likely to have been a small piece of an asteroid entering the Earth’s atmosphere, scientists have said. The meteor sent a sonic boom across southern England, according to scientists from the UK Fireball Alliance (UKFall). UKFall said the bright light could be seen from Ireland to the Netherlands, and the meteor is set to break the world record as the most-reported ever – with 758 such reports on International Meteor Organisation’s website so far. “The video recordings tell us its speed was about 30,000 miles per hour, which is too fast for it to be human-made ‘space junk’, so it’s not an old rocket or satellite,” said UKFall’s Dr Ashley King. “We were also able to reconstruct its original orbit around the sun. This particular piece of asteroid spent most of its orbit between Mars and Jupiter, though sometimes got closer to the Sun than Earth is.”

MANZ PVC WINDOWS & DOORS

Mystery on the airwaves Dozens of motorists were left scratching their heads after they were unable to get into their cars when their keyfobs stopped working. Around 100 people who had parked outside a Tesco in Royston, Hertfordshire, were affected and in a bizarre twist, the case is now being investigated by TV and radio regulator Ofcom. Police have also looked into the case, but so far have not found a cause. However, they have said that they don’t believe it’s a case of foul play. The problem happened over a period of three days and in some cases car alarms were going off. Then came the conspiracy theories with the full moon being blamed, along with the idea that it could be ‘some kind of alien phenomenon’. Police told people not to panic and to report any issues to supermarket staff.

Lots of choccie facts...

Easter Egg Facts

In Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Jesus, before being blessed and distributed to congregants.

The first chocolate Easter egg was produced in 1873 by Fry’s. The average child receives 8.8 Easter eggs each year.

Giving eggs is a symbol of "rebirth" in many cultures.

Back in 2007, a Faberge egg covered in diamonds sold for £9 million. Every hour, a cockerel made of jewels would pop up from the egg to flap its wings four times, nod its head three times and make a crowing noise. It was made as an engagement present from a Russian family to French aristocrat Baron Edouard de Rothschild.

The world's largest chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy in April 2011. It measured 34 feet and 1.05 inches in length, and weighed approximately 15,873 pounds. It was taller than a giraffe and heavier than an elephant! In Germany, people dance with eggs. The egg dance is an Easter tradition in Germany. People put eggs on the floor and dance around them, trying not to break any.

The world’s most popular chocolate Easter egg is the Cadbury’s Crème Egg. The factory workers produce a massive 1.5 million of the eggs every single day. Decorating eggs is an ancient tradition.

Interesting Facts... The name "Poland" (Polska) has a meaning. It originates from the name of the tribe Polanie, which means ‘people living in open fields’.

The country has been invaded or has fought for freedom in insurrections over 40 times. Poland even disappeared from world maps between 1772 and 1795. In 1791, Poland established its first written constitution. When it was published, it was only the world’s second legal and valid document of its kind. However, this feat was short-lived as it only lasted 14 months and 3 weeks. After this period, the country got divided into partitions for at least 100 years.

The Warsaw radio mast in Konstantynow was the world’s tallest structure from 1974, until its collapse in 1991. It was the second tallest structure ever built after Burj Khalifa, completed in 2010. The mast was 646.38 meters (2,120.7 ft) tall. Located in Wrocław, the “Piwnica Swidnicka” is the oldest restaurant in Europe, open since 1275. You can still eat there today.

For more than 5 centuries, Poland has been known for its production of high-quality vodka. The earliest version of Polish vodka was Gorzalks, which was also used in medicine and other treatments.

Mount Maroma Hike - Was It Worth The Pain?!

It was an early start and anyone who knows me will know that I have to be dragged out of bed any time before 9.30am — so at 6am, forget it! However, on Sunday 28th February (Andalucia Day), when I should have been having a nice lie-in, my dreaded alarm clock went off after I’d tossed and turned all night long in fear of what would meet me in the morning

The team of Josh (La Tasca), Charlie, Tony (not Sentinella Tony, lol!), Martin, Trevor and Antony (GPS Insurance, who started out a little later on) and me, all local friends of Torre del Mar, had decided to walk up La Maroma. I got bullied into it by Josh, and I have still not forgiven him. Before I had even responded to doing the hike, a “go fund me” was opened and people were already making donations, so what could I say but OK I’ll do it!

From left to right, Martin, Kami, Charlie, Trevor, Josh & Tony

We arrived at Alcazar in Alcaucin just before 8am, and after a last slurp out of my flask of tea, four plasters on each foot in place, rucksack on back, I was ready. We started the incline up the Maroma, and spirits were high amongst the group, even though it was a bit nippy. All that was going through my mind was.. WHAT AM I DOING?! Those who know me, know I am not fit, do not exercise much and when I do try and exercise I have a lot of pain after it, so therefore I rarely bother. But today I just had to get on with it.

10 minutes into the hike, I knew this was going to be more than tough; I was ready to turn back already. Charlie and Martin, the ‘fitties’ of the group, were already out of sight; Trevor and Tony were still in sight and Josh and I slacked at the back, although I think Josh was feeling guilty about bullying me into it and felt he should stay with me. However, his guilt didn’t stay for long, and soon I was

The fitties!

quite a way behind. Eventually, after about an hour in, we had found our “forever friends” with whom we were going to make that hike to the top. Tony and I were at the back and decided to just take it at our own pace (well my pace) anyway. A couple of hours in and it was starting to become more real — I mean I had now woken up, and realised the rollercoaster I was on. It’s not until you start doing something like this that the reality kicks in, and if you go up, you must come down, but saying that, by this point we were now seeing some of the most beautiful views that anyone could imagine. I was still OK at this point — a bit tired, but no pain and no blisters, so things were good.

Antony (from GPS Insurance) decided that he was going to run up and down the Maroma — I mean, REALLY?! Here was me knowing that I would be struggling just to walk up it but at approximately 11.05am, after starting an hour after us all, he went running past us like he was a kid running to the sweet shop with a euro. This is when the hike got difficult for me. So, we were three hours in, Charlie and Martin had already posted a selfie at the top — it had taken them just two hours — and there was me starting to get pain in my hip and my left knee. We started to slow right down — even slower than we were already going — and at some points it really was two steps forward and three steps back. What

Mount Maroma Hike - Was It Worth The Pain?! (Continued)

made it worse was that a guy who was on his way down told us we had a ‘tecero’ to go. Me being optimistic asked excitedly, “15 minutes?” To which he replied, “no, ‘un tecero’” — basically a third more to go. I was like NO … that can’t be right! Another 1hr 15 minutes, with my slow pace added to that, meant we were probably looking at around another 2 to 2hr 30 minutes more. I wanted to cry. The can Antony the runner of Redbull I had drunk previously DID NOT give me wings, so I will be wanting a full refund for that! Also, my most sincere apologies go out to Tony, into whose ear I had moaned almost the whole way there.  So, with approximately two hours more walking to go, my knees were taking their toll. I had found that to alleviate some of the pain in my left leg, I was walking a bit differently and now my right knee was starting to hurt too. I just wished that I could get to the top, have an hour’s break and make it back down before dark … but even that was starting to seem near-impossible.

Finally, at 1.10pm — 5hrs 50 mins later — we

were all reunited at the top of La Maroma. What a relief! It was a little disappointing that we could not appreciate the usually wonderful views as there was a fair bit of cloud, but to be honest I was a bit out-of-body, a bit out of it to notice too much and it was freezing up there with a real bitter wind too. I was hoping for a nice hour’s sit down, relax and sleep but no — it was a quick change of plasters, a few hasty photos and back on our feet for the descent. My legs were not ready for this, but Josh worked up an appetite there was no other way to get down.

The seven of us set off once again and within just a few minutes, I knew this was NOT going to happen. I literally could not walk through the pain in my knees, but Josh kindly lent me his walking stick. This, to be fair, was a godsend as I would never have made it down without it. But even with the stick, my speed was snail-pace; all that was going through my head was: “5hrs 50 minutes up, at least 4hrs 50 minutes down, how was I going to do it.” Antony was already out of sight — he decided not only to run up the mountain, but to run down it too! That doesn’t even register in my head. Anyway, we didn’t realise at that moment that this would be the last time we would see him for a while … but more about that later. It was time to make a plan, as quite clearly this was going to be painful for all if everyone had to go at my pace and listen to my constant moaning. Martin and Josh decided they would walk on ahead as fast as Trevor & Tony nearly at the top they could, collect the car from the car park and drive up as far as they could to meet me and

Mount Maroma Hike - Was It Worth The Pain?! (Continued)

hopefully save me walking the last approximately two hours of the trek. Trevor and Tony decided to take it at their own pace and poor old Charlie pulled the short straw and was stuck looking after me.

The next three or more hours were the worst of my life with regard to pain. I can honestly say it was so painful — with every step with one leg that couldn’t bend, dragging it over rock after rock and the other leg with a knee and a hip that I could hardly stand on, I was ready to give up and call the SOS helicopter to save me. But, if anyone knows Charlie, they will know he is full of energy, very funny and if it hadn’t been for him chatting to me and making me laugh all the way, I certainly would have given up before I even started the descent. I have to say there is a way to keep people positive in times of need and then there is just feeding them pure rubbish — I swore to God if he told me we had 10 minutes to go one more time I would have inflicted an injury with my stick! We had such a laugh, though, with tears of laughter and tears of pain at the same time for me.

Then, we got the call from Josh and Martin to say that the Guardia Civil wouldn’t let them drive up to get me, and that they (the Guardia) were waiting for me at No explanation needed! the point where a car could reach. After probably an hour more of walking (well, me hobbling) in amongst the clouds, we finally saw the silhouettes of two Guardia Civil officers in front of us. They had walked partway up to help me the rest of the way, and boy, did I need them. One took my arm, and with my stick in my other hand, they guided me back to their car about 20 minutes away. I was so glad to be sitting down, and after about another 20 minutes’ drive we were back at the car park; it seemed in time as though I had left the day before. An enormous relief filled my body, but then panic set in about the coming days ... and I was right. The following day I spent in bed, unable to move. Days 2 to 7 I was on painkillers, and only after that was I just about recovered.

On return to Torre del Mar, my friend Martha had run me the bubbliest bath I have ever been in. But, how was I going to get in it and out of it? It was painful but let’s just say it’s best if I don’t discuss the getting out of it! Anyway, back to the car park, where the whole party was reunited once again. BUT WAIT... I wasn’t the last to make it back, so who was missing? Antony, the runner, the one

who should have been down first! Where was he? He’d only run the wrong way and we are letting you guess where he ended up. What a Wally!! See page 96 and answer next month.

To sum up... reliving this on paper was almost as painful as the real thing, but was it worth it? A total of 1,143.02€ was donated, along with a fair few bags of food too. The food bank in Torre del Mar told us that they didn’t even receive this much food to help local families throughout the whole of the Christmas period, and some of these people will be experiencing a different type of pain to mine, day in and day out — so yes, it was worth the pain and I forgive you, Josh, for setting it all up. The lady at the food bank sent us this message a few days after we dropped all the food off, “Many of the families had tears in their eyes after receiving their parcels from the food bank that were donated by “Team La Maroma” The organisers of the food bank would like to thank you all so much and the families are extremely grateful”.

A big congratulations to the whole team that day, and a massive thank you to everyone who donated! The Ed x

Andalucia 4 You - From Dreams To Reality

YOUR INTERNATIONAL ESTATE AGENCY IN AXARQUÍA!

ANDALUCÍA, This most Southern part of Europe is not only famous for its authenticity, preserved culture, traditions and unspoilt nature, it’s the inspiration source for many people on this planet! It’s a home to many creative and talented people and offers an opportunity for those who are looking to change their lives for the best OR maybe even start with a blank A4-page? Enjoy the Mediterranean lifestyle with us! We believe the region of Axarquía has something magical, something that helps people find themselves, their very own peace and quite where they can discover themselves and their talents. Looking back on our client's experiences we visited B&B Casa La Escala in Cómpeta and caught up with Anja and Anja Moreels & Danny de Spiegeleer Danny. Anja explained: “I was dreaming for years to be able to live and work in the sunny south of Europe. After a career of more than 30 years as a healthcare expert, it was time for a new life. A small B&B to operate, be your own boss and live without stress.” Anja just had to convince her husband (Danny) to go on this adventure with her. Anja continued,“We had viewed many properties also in other areas of Spain but preferred Andalusia and more specifically the ‘Axarquía region’, ‘El mejor clima de Europa’ and ‘los pueblos blancos' this is when we came into contact with Victoria and were able to make our wishes come true. Several

weeks before our visit to Spain we had viewed a selection of properties sent by Victoria to Belgium and thus, in good communication, we began our search with her for our ideal home in Axarquía. Once in Spain, Victoria took us on a week long tour and always accompanied us with her expert advice in a pleasant way. None of our comments were too much for her. Until we were standing in front of our dream house in the pretty mountain village of Cómpeta. The view from the terraces were amazing, wonderful nature, lots of greenery, mountains and the sea in the distance. Everything went according the plan. Our dream came true and we are delighted to present our Bed and Breakfast ‘Casa La Escala’!” “Our B&B offers three tastefully decorated rooms, a common breakfast room and a cozy lounge area. Outside there is a swimming pool with sunbeds and parasols. Our honesty bar is a wonderful place to relax whilst enjoying a nice glass of sparkling wine or a fresh pint of beer…” Find more information on our website: www.casalaescala.com/en

“We look back on the fantastic collaboration with Victoria and we are proud to share our experience and offer our accommodation to her clients, family and friends.”

Grandparents

What is a Grandparent? (taken from papers written by a class of 8-year-olds)

They wear glasses and funny underwear.

Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no little children of there own. They like other people's. A grandfather is a man and a grandmother is a lady! Grandparents don't have to do anything except be there when we come to see them. They are so old they shouldn't play hard or run. It is good if they drive us to the shops and give us money.

Grandparents don't have to be smart.

They have to answer questions like 'why isn't God married?' and 'How come dogs chase cats?'

Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you don't have a television because they are the only grown ups who like to spend time with us.

They show us and talk to us about the colour of the flowers and also why we shouldn't step on 'cracks.' Usually grandmothers are fat but not too fat to tie your shoes.

HOg ROAST FOR YOUR CELEBRATION!! BOOK NOW!!

They can take their teeth and gums out.

When they read to us, they don't skip. They don't mind if we ask for the same story over again.

When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like pretty leaves and caterpillars.

They don't say, 'Hurry up.'

35

They know we should have snack-time before bedtime and they say prayers with us every time and kiss us even when we've acted bad. It's funny when they bend over, you hear gas leaks and they blame their dog.'

Out And About In Torrox

Torrox is the name of a collection of locations situated east of Torre Del Mar. This is a popular spot to live and holiday for both Spanish and other European nations with one big factor being it has the best climate in Europe. Each of these places have much to offer in their own right and collectively, they form a lovely area to live, work and relax. Torrox Costa is located just 15km from Torre Del Mar. Torrox Costa has a totally different character and personality to its near neighbour. Like much of this coast, there’s an impressive promenade that sweeps the length of the beaches here. At its eastern end, just past the lighthouse, the beach is dog friendly and is a great spot to let your furry friend run along the shoreline.

Torrox Pueblo is situated at the foothills of the Alpujarra mountains, a couple of miles inland from Torrox Costa. This is traditional white-washed village set in a green valley. There’s a traditional Spanish feel to this small village, despite it being the home to many people from other parts of the world. Located between Torrox Costa and Pueblo, Torrox Park is a large collection of urbanisations that are popular relocation spots with those who decide to make this area of Axarquía their home. There’s property to suit every budget and style: spacious villas, townhouses and apartments along with a large and well equipped mobile home park that allows all year living. Whilst, in itself, Torrox Park, doesn’t offer much for day trippers, many visitors stay here as homes are frequently listed for holiday rental. It does provide all the services required for a smooth stay or relocation: bars, restaurants, supermarkets as well as doctors, chemists, hairdressers etc.

The combination of Torrox Costa, Pueblo and Park is a winning one. Each has their own distinct character but each are connected to form an excellent place to stay, explore and maybe even to live. Shop Local - Support Your Local Community

Why Have Therapy?

Therapy can be useful for anyone who wants to explore the way they're thinking or feeling, as well as for anyone experiencing a problem or issues they are keen to resolve. You may choose to speak to a therapist because you feel you cannot speak to your other half/friends/family about some personal issues, or you may simply wish to speak to a professional with an objective viewpoint in a safe and confidential environment.

Sometimes what we say to others can have a knock-on effect, altering relationships and the way people see each other. Therapy sessions eliminate this problem and offers you the space and freedom to explore your own thoughts with an unbiased party to help you uncover your own insight and understanding of your problems, providing you with the tools which will help you to resolve them. You will also come to understand yourself better and the way you think, which will ultimately help you develop a clearer understanding of your problems. The more armed with information you are, the easier it

41

becomes to navigate your way through any difficulties you are facing, so that you can come out the other side feeling more positive and can also help you better understand other people's point of view, which can shed light onto the way you interpret words or actions.

I am not there to sit you down and tell you what to do. Instead, you will be encouraged to talk about what's bothering you in order to uncover any root causes and identify your specific ways of thinking.

Signing A Spanish Form Will In The UK

We understand that a number of our regular readers and our clients may be accessing this publication from their homes in the UK as a result of the travel ban.

If you want to sign a Will for your Spanish assets this can be signed in the UK without having to travel to Spain.

If you have assets in Spain it is strongly recommended that you have a separate Spanish Will, even if you already have a UK Will.

WHY? Because having a Spanish Will makes dealing with the deceased person’s estate simpler, quicker and cheaper for the beneficiaries. If you do not have a Spanish Will and you have assets in Spain then you run the risk of your beneficiaries incurring avoidable Spanish inheritance tax fines, considerable delays in winding up or transferring your estate and a considerably higher cost in dealing with the inheritance. You may want to update an existing Spanish Will to keep up with changes in taxation, changes in the law or simply due to a change in your personal circumstances.

Correct wording in a Will can help to avoid the Spanish law of compulsory heirs being applied to your estate which would mean your estate could pass to people other than to the intended beneficiaries. For example, in Spanish law a parent or child takes precedence over a spouse. Your Spanish Will can even be signed before a notary in the UK if you are unable to come to Spain. This is all the more important at the current time with the restrictions on travel.

43

The lawyer can draft the Will in English and organise a signing in front of a notary in the UK. The signed Will is then legalised with an apostille for use in Spain, translated into Spanish and registered at the Spanish Wills registry.

The Will, once signed and registered, has the same validity as a Spanish Will signed at a notary in Spain. We can arrange the whole process including, if you wish, finding an appropriate notary and arranging the appointment.

Halting Erosion Using Vetiver From Vetiver Spain

Our Nursery is open by appointment only depending on the current travel restrictions. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa. Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now.

We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture. Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites. In these 2 photos you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later.

We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge Here is a link to a short video showing the results. https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo

We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant.

To see more images of Vetiver go to this link. https://www.vetiverspain.org/photo-gallery.html Presently we have some specials, which include free shipping to numerous locations

For more information please contact us. Please visit us or visit our website: www.vetiverspain.com email: info@vetiverspain.com Telephone: (34) 692 288 657

Kid’s Writes

pregnant? (Helen, age 6)

More great remarks out of the mouths of babes

6) I’m not going to write about the sea. My baby brother is always screaming and being sick. My Dad keeps shouting at my Mum and my big sister has just got pregnant, so I can’t think what to write. (Amy, age 6)

About the sea 1) Oyster’s balls are called pearls. (James, age 6)

2) If you are surrounded by sea you are an island. If you don’t have sea all around you, you are incontinent (Wayne, age 7)

3) My dad goes out with his boat and comes back with crabs. (Emily Burniston, age 5)

4) When ships had sails they used to use the trade winds to cross the ocean. Sometimes, when the wind didn’t blow, the sailors would whistle to make the wind come. My brother said they would be better off eating beans. (William, age 7) 5) I like mermaids. They are beautiful and I like their shiny tails. How do mermaids get

7) Some fish are dangerous. Jellyfish can sting. Electric eels can give you a shock. They have to live in caves under the sea where I think they have to plug themselves in to chargers. (Christopher, age 7)

8) When you go swimming in the sea it is very cold and it makes my willy small. (Kevin, age 6) 9) Divers have to be very safe when they go under the water. Two divers can’t go down alone so they have to go down on each other. (Becky, age 8)

Another beauty for you…

Sentinella Fables

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; It just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the Donkey realised what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quietened down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up. Remember the five simple rules to be happy: Free your heart from hatred Forgive. Free your mind from worries Most never happen. Live simply and appreciate what you have. Give more. Expect less NOW ........... Enough of that rubbish.. The donkey later came back, And bit the farmer who had tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got infected and The farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.

MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON: When you do something wrong, and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.

Random Jokes :)

An elderly man is sitting alone at a bar. It starts to get late and the bartender says, “Sorry pal, last call.” Upon hearing this, the man pays his bill and turns to look at the door. As he begins to stand up, he suddenly falls and lands face first. “I must have had more than I thought.” He thinks to himself. Looking at the door he thinks “If I can just make it there, a bit of fresh air will have me good as new.” So the old man crawls to the door and props himself up, he takes a breath and as he begins to step, he again falls flat on his face. Luckily, he only lived a block from the bar. “If I can just make it home, I’ll be just fine” So the old man proceeds to crawl to his house. When he reaches the door, he again props himself up. As he is about to take a step, he once again falls flat on his face. “This just isn’t my night,” thought the old man. “I’ll just crawl into bed and call it quits.” So the old man crawls up the stairs and into his bed where he immediately passes out. As morning comes, he is rudely awoken by

Bananas come from a family of plants called Musa that are native to Southeast Asia and grown in many of the warmer areas of the world. Many types and sizes exist. Their colour usually ranges from green to yellow, but some varieties are red.

vitamin B9, (also known as folate), a nutrient that may fight depression. For replenishing energy and electrolytes, bananas can be more effective than sports drinks.

One recent study found that women who ate a banana twice daily as a pre-meal snack for 60 days reduced their belly-bloat by 50 percent! Why? The fruit increases bloat-fighting bacteria in the stomach, and it's also a legendarily good source of potassium, which can help diminish retention of fluids. The banana is a perennial plant that replaces itself. Bananas do not grow from a seed but from a bulb or rhizome, and it takes 9 to 12 months from sowing a banana bulb to harvesting the fruit.

Bananas are among the world’s most commonly consumed fruits.

Bananas are one of the best fruit sources of vitamin B6.

You may not associate bananas with vitamin C but a medium-sized banana will provide about 10% of your daily vitamin C needs.

Bananas are good for your heart. They are packed with potassium, a mineral electrolyte that keeps electricity flowing throughout your body, which is required to keep your heart beating. Bananas can be helpful in overcoming depression due to high levels of tryptophan. They contain 6% of your daily value of

Maro: Breathtaking Scenery Along The Coastal Drive

Maro, set spectacularly on the cliffs, is a tiny beach settlement that is full of life and beauty. The sunrises and sunsets here are truly incredible as the light, cliffs and sea create an incredible vista.

Maro’s fiestas Maro, the small village just east of Nerja with a population of 800, is located on the coast, 3km east of Nerja and 50km east of Malaga. Maro’s whitewashed houses set by the sea make it an incredibly attractive village. It dates back to the early Christian Era and archeologists discovered evidence of a Roman fortification. This is now the Plaza de la Iglesia. Within this small village there are a great range of tapas bars and restaurants. It seems a million miles away from the ever popular, Nerja.

On last day of October, Maro continues an ancestral tradition by celebrating the humble chestnut. The Chestnut Fiesta or Fiesta de la Castaña y el Boniato draws a large crowd as locals and visitors participate in the mass consumption of thousands of kilos of this dried fruit together accompanied with another speciality of the area: roast sweet potato. This lively festival includes music, entertainment and dancing which continue well into the night. It combines itself with the other celebration on this day: Halloween or Maroween. Introduced just a few years ago, it has developed in popularity. It now stretches to the next day and the nearby Nerja caves often offer some subterranean thrills and scares for a small admission fee. The September Feria is another exciting event on Maro’s calendar. It’s a village affair with horse riding, music and dancing and a taste of a real Pueblo Feria. Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Beach The beach at Maro has no real development and therein lies its attraction. It is simply a beach set in some of the most awe inspiring scenery in Axarquía. Here, the Sierra de Almijara plunges dramatically into the sea whilst erosion has created this spectacular coastline of cliffs, coves and small beaches over an area of 1,814 hectares, on the border between Granada and Málaga provinces. At Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Beauty Spot or the Paraje Natural Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo the truly incredible beauty of this area can be seen. It’s a few minutes drive from Maro village and a ten minute drive from Nerja centre as well as being on the local bus route.

Playa de Maro is a fifteen minute wander down the winding path from the village centre and the large car park. The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle and set in a sheltered and secluded cove. Maro Beach has just one beach bar/restaurant and limited facilities as this is a protected area. Therefore, it is important to bring all the things that you might need for a day at the beach surrounded by natural beauty. The 500m long beach with soft sand is surrounded by nature and beauty: vegetation, crops, canes and the sparkling azure sea. In the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean there’s a treasure trove of coral reefs and all types of fish. This is an ideal location for snorkelling. The sea here is usually calm and tranquil, with its translucent blue colour. Fishing is not allowed here as it is a natural park which means that fish and aquatic life are in abundance: groupers, sponges, corals, and sea anemones to name a few. More experienced divers can discover the amazing underwater caves.

Rent a kayak and explore Rental of kayak which allows you to explore the stunning landscape. Or book an excursion with a guide so that you don’t miss any of this area’s hidden gems such as the water falling down as a waterfall from under a cliff. At the top of the hill before the descent down to the beach is quite an incongruous sight: a biker bar and live music venue run by an English man who loves both the music and the bikes. The coastal highway is a popular place to ride motorbikes and cycles and the bar provides an excellent watering hole on the route. It is a friendly place with hearty food and hosts lots of local bands with a wide variety of music tastes catered for including a popular jam session.

In the US, only 12 of the 50 states recognise Good Friday as a holiday.

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Christian religion. Half of the states in the United States have banned the practice of dyeing chicks for Easter. However, Florida recently overturned the 45-year-old law of preventing the dyeing of animals. The term Easter gets its name from Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess who symbolises the hare and the egg.

Easter takes place on a Sunday, after the 40-day period called Lent. Lent is referred to as a time of fasting, but participants focus more on giving up one significant indulgence. Holy Week is celebrated during the week leading up to Easter. It begins on Palm Sunday, continues on to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and then finally, Easter Sunday. In the old days pretzels were associated with Easter because the twists of the pretzel were thought to resemble arms crossing in prayer.

Not only did Florida overturn the dyeing of animals, but the state also held the largest Easter egg hunt, where 9,753 children searched for 501,000 eggs.

The white lily, the symbol of the resurrection, is the special Easter flower.

Film

Rating: PG Runtime: 114 min Director: Carlos López Estrada Stars: Alan Tudyk, Awkwafina, Benedict Wong, Cassie Steele, Daniel Dae Kim, Gemma Chan, Izaac Wang, Jona Xiao, Kelly Marie Tran, Lucille Soong, Patti Harrison, Ross Butler, Sandra Oh, Thalia Tran

Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary

last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.

Not only is this film visually stunning, but it conveys some important messages too. Raya, voiced marvellously by Kelly Marie Tran, is a Disney princess, technically, but she's a lot more than that — she's a warrior, for one thing (the film's numerous fight scenes are thrillingly choreographed). And she's something else — something no Disney Princess before her has been: she's complicated.

It's her flawed nature that makes Raya the most compelling, most sympathetic and most layered Disney princess in the company's long history — and what makes Raya and the Last Dragon the best Disney animated feature in many years. Star Rating ****/*****

You Never Know!

Watch out men, we are all very good at flying

My ex-wife started taking flying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was final, later that same year. Yesterday afternoon I got a phone call, that she narrowly escaped injury in the aircraft she was piloting. Seems she was forced to make an emergency landing in a nearby village because of bad weather. The TSB issued a preliminary report, citing pilot error: She was flying a single engine aircraft in IFR (instrument flight rating) conditions while only having obtained a VFR (visual flight rating) rating. The absence of a post-crash fire was likely due to insufficient fuel on board. No one on the ground was injured. The photograph opposite was taken at the scene to show the extent of damage to her aircraft. She was really lucky!

Little Johnny found this so exciting that he could hardly contain himself as he ran home and started to tell his mother. “Mummy, I was at the playground and I saw Daddy's car go into the woods with Aunt Jane. I went back to look and he was giving Aunt Jane a big kiss and then he helped her take off her shirt. Then Aunt Jane helped Daddy take his pants off, then Aunt Jane...” At this point Mummy cut him off and said, “Johnny, this is such an interesting story, lets save the rest of it for supper time. I want to see the look on Daddy's face when you tell it tonight.” At the dinner table that evening, Mummy asked little Johnny to tell his story Johnny

The former glamour model, 42, and Kieran, 33, separated in March 2018 and she is now free to marry her current boyfriend, Carl Woods, 32. She told The Sun: ‘Finally, we’ve signed the divorce papers. I’m so happy that I’m free from that marriage. The only good thing that came out of it was my children.’ Katie shares her two youngest kids, Jett, seven, and Bunny, six, with Kieran and has three other children – Harvey, 18, from her relationship with Dwight Yorke, and Junior, 15, and Princess, 13, from her marriage to Peter Andre. She is now planning to have a baby with Carl and the pair have even talked about tying the knot.

Heidi and Alex went through an 18-month struggle to have another baby. No X Factor till 2023? Dermot O'Leary has hinted that The X Factor may not return until 2023. The presenter, 47, first hosted ITV's singing competition in 2007 and has opened up about the talent show's hiatus and when fans can expect to see it back on air. He told new! magazine: “I can't see it coming back this year. If it does come back, it'll be 2022 — maybe 2023.” Dermot admitted he is missing filming the show, which launched in 2004, adding: “You do miss it, definitely. You work with people for the best part of 10 years and you become a really tight team. And you do miss the buzz of a Saturday night show. There's something great about it.” The talent series was halted in 2020 when coronavirus hit, rendering it impossible to produce the show which involves mass gatherings for open public auditions. Dermot is currently presenting This Morning alongside Alison Hammond every Friday, after taking over from long-time hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes.

Piers quits Piers Morgan has quit Good Morning Britain after more than 41,000 people complained about his conduct regarding Meghan Markle. The TV host stepped down after Ofcom launched an investigation following his comments about “not believing Meghan” when she claimed she had felt suicidal. A statement from ITV read: “Following discussions, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.” Piers came under fire when he condemned Meghan’s comments in her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey. Meghan claimed that a senior member of the Royal family had “expressed concern” over baby Archie’s skin colour while she was pregnant, and said that the pressure of being in the family left her “suicidal.” Discussing the revelations, Piers said that he “didn’t believe a word that she said.”He then walked off the set of Good Morning Britain after co-star Alex Beresford pulled him up on his conduct. The weather reporter defended Harry and Meghan, and called Piers out for his continued condemnation of the Royal couple.

When Your Neighbour Is Too Close To Home!

I have recently completed a three year battle to make a miracle happen!

Some owners of country properties here in Andalusia unwittingly purchased their homes without realising that they shared the plot that their homes are on, with another house – that is, two houses on the one plot, according to the Property Registry. This is a difficult, in fact almost impossible situation to rectify, given that the laws on segregation are very limited – any segregated plot needs to be at least 25,000 square metres once segregated, and often the plot that two houses share is well under that 50,000 square metre minimum and indeed, the proportions not equally owned. How do you solve such a dilemma, to then be able to have your paperwork in order and sell your house confidently? In many cases, where the houses are both older and well established, there may be a way out, and this is how we managed the case I mentioned. Article 185 in the modification of the urban planning law known

93

as the LOUA 7/2002, states that in some cases, where two or more properties exist on one registered plot, the plots can be segregated if each property obtains the DAFO certificate. Each DAFO has to show the house and its land boundaries clearly, with geo-coordinates for both the house and the plot. The process is slow, time consuming and not cheap, but in many cases this impossible task is now possible! I have come across two cases through my work now, where this procedure is being implemented, and the local notaries are implementing this law to successfully pass these segregations through the Property Registry. Long live Spanish bureaucracy!

If you think you might benefit from such a procedure, we would be happy to take a look at your case. By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advertisement below)

Drinks: Loving Gin

Gin is a (worldwide) favourite, for many. The base flavour is from juniper berries and, today, numerous flavoured gins can be located. Gin is a most popular part of many cocktails, too.

Multi award-winning THUNDERFLOWER Gin is a small-batch, craft gin produced using the traditional London Dry method. The several botanical flavours, that include Macedonian juniper, English coriander, cardamoms, pink peppercorns, liquorice, angelica root, plus elderflower, sage and others, are extracted by vapour infusion. Dartmoor spring water, is then added to the final spirit. Following a lengthy experimentation and development period, the eventual recipe was agreed upon, by Dominic and Anicca O’Nions and the full-bodied, spicy London Dry gin was finally created. The attractive bottles are presented with much pride. Following the popularity, since launch, production has had to be increased to meet demand, from their distillery in Teignmouth, Devon. All bottles are hand-signed. THUNDERFLOWER DRY GIN (42% vol) is a small-batch, craft gin and (in my opinion) very worthwhile locating. Made in the traditional London Dry method and using a ‘one-shot’ distillation process, with botanical flavours extracted, by vapour infusion, Dartmoor spring water complements the production, perfectly. Smooth and with an excellent body, this gin is balanced superbly and the palate

97

enjoys a sensation, to the end.

THUNDERFLOWER FIRE-SHIP (58% vol) has to be experienced, to be believed! This powerful production has a story that relates to the Fire Ships that were used in naval warfare. These wooden ships were set alight, then steered and aimed, whilst ablaze, into the fleet of the enemy. THUNDERFLOWER FIRE-SHIP 58 is known as ‘Navy Strength’ and, again, is distilled in small batches, utilising the London Dry method and vapour infusions to great advantage, with Dartmoor spring water being added.

For a perfect ‘match’, to the aforementioned gins, FRANKLIN & SONS LTD (Est 1886) Natural Indian Tonic Water is a recommended addition (www.franklinandsons.co.uk). The blend of sparkling spring water, natural botanical flavours, plus quinine and cinchona bark extract, pairs extremely well indeed, with the THUNDERFLOWER productions, which are truly a great addition to any gin enthusiast’s collection. He bought a warehouse. ------------------------------------------------------------Cinderella is now 95 years old. After a fulfilling life with the now dead prince, she sits happily upon her rocking chair, watching the world go by from her front porch, with a cat named Bob for companionship. One sunny afternoon out of nowhere, appeared the fairy godmother. Cinderella said, “Fairy Godmother, what are you doing here after all these years?” The fairy godmother replied, “Cinderella, you have lived an exemplary life since I last saw you. Is there anything for which your heart still yearns?” Cinderella was taken aback, overjoyed, and after some thoughtful consideration, she uttered her first wish: “The prince was wonderful, but not much of an investor. I'm living hand to mouth on my disability cheques and I wish I were wealthy beyond comprehension.” Instantly her rocking chair turned into solid gold. Cinderella said, “Ooh, thank you, Fairy Godmother.” The fairy godmother replied, “It is the least that I can do. What do you want for your second wish?” Cinderella looked down at her frail body, and

said, “I wish I were young and full of the beauty and youth I once had.” At once, her wish became reality, and her beautiful young visage returned. Cinderella felt stirrings inside her that had been dormant for years. And then the fairy godmother spoke once more: “You have one more wish; what shall it be?” Cinderella looked over to the frightened cat hissing in the corner and said, “I wish for you to transform Bob into a kind and handsome young man.” Magically, Bob suddenly underwent a fundamental change in his biological make-up, that when he stood before her, he was a man so beautiful the likes of him neither she nor the world had ever seen. The fairy godmother said, “Congratulations, Cinderella, enjoy your new life.” With a blazing shock of bright blue electricity the fairy godmother was gone. For a few eerie moments Bob and Cinderella looked into each other's eyes. Cinderella sat breathless, gazing at the most beautiful, stunningly perfect man she had ever seen. Then Bob walked over to Cinderella, who sat transfixed in her rocking chair, and took her up into his young muscular arms. He leaned in close, blowing her golden hair with his warm breath, as he whispered... “I bet you're sorry now that you had my b******* cut off.” ------------------------------------------------------------My husband, being unhappy with my mood swings, bought me a mood ring the other day so he would be able to monitor my moods. We’ve discovered that when I’m in a good mood, it turns green. When I’m in a bad mood it leaves a big red mark on his forehead. Maybe next time he’ll buy me a diamond.

A New Zealander walking along the road with a sheep under each arm. He meets another New Zealander who says “You shearin' mate?” The first guy replies “Naw, they're both mine.” ------------------------------------------------------------An elderly man in Georgia had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back. It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple, and peach trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the 20 women shouted to him, “We're not coming out until you leave!” The old man frowned, “I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.” Holding the bucket up he said, “I'm here to feed the alligator.” ------------------------------------------------------------A rich lonely widow decided that she needed another man in her life so she placed an ad, which read something like this: Rich widow looking for man to share life and fortune... Needs to have these qualifications: 1) Won’t beat me up, 2) Won’t run away 3) Has to be great in bed. For several months, her phone rang off the hook, her doorbell was ringing constantly, she received tons of mail, etc., all to no avail: none seemed to match her qualifications. Then one day the doorbell rang yet again. She opened the door to find a man with no

arms and no legs lying on the welcome mat. Perplexed, she asked, “Who are you? And what do you want?” “Hi," he said, “Your search is over, for I'm the man of your dreams. I've got no arms so I can't beat you up and no legs so I can't run away.” “Well, then,” she said, “What makes you think that you're so great in bed?” To which he replied,..... “Well, I rang the doorbell, didn't I?” ------------------------------------------------------------Old Fred had been a religious man who was in the hospital, near death. The family called their preacher to stand with them. As the preacher stood next to the bed, old Fred's condition appeared to deteriorate and he motioned frantically for something to write on. The pastor lovingly handed him a pen and a piece of paper, and old Fred used his last bit of energy to scribble a note, then he died. The preacher thought it best not to look at the note at that time, so he placed it in his jacket pocket. At the funeral, as he was finishing the message, he realised that he was wearing the same jacket that he was wearing when old Fred died. He said, “You know, old Fred handed me a note just before he died. I haven't looked at it, but knowing Fred, I'm sure there's a word of inspiration there for us all.” He opened the note, and read out loud, “Hey, you're standing on my oxygen tube?” ------------------------------------------------------------Secrets to a perfect relationship: It is important that a woman helps you around the house and has a job. It is important that a woman makes you laugh It is important to find a woman you can count on and who doesn’t lie to you. It is important that a woman is good in bed and loves making love to you. It is REALLY important that these four women don’t know each other!

CANCER: June 22-July 22 You’re full of energy and buzzing with great ideas. Socialise when possible and network the sky’s the limit for your achievements, personally and career-wise. Pamper yourself, tackle problems and, at the end of the month, deal with authority LEO: July 23-August 23 Avoid rushing into financial deals at the beginning of April. Assess and check before making decisions. You’ll have a brainwave or several and should feel sufficiently energised and confident to act on them

VIRGO: August 24-September 22 Avoid the urge to be critical of family and close friends, you may not be informed of all circumstances and they may not appreciate your attempts to organise their lives.
