m Fro Ed... the Wow, wow, wow … what a great month July was! The Weekend Beach Festival was the highlight for me: being third row from the front of a crowd of what felt like 60,000 people — and in fact was more like 100,000 — and almost within touching distance of the Black Eyed Peas and Will.I.am who atoned for being about 40 minutes late for their set put on the most fantastic show performance we could possibly have asked for. “Tonight’s gonna be a good, good, night”, they sang. Well, it certainly was and August is also going to be a “good, good” month and you have chosen the “best, best” magazine to keep you entertained and allow you to find the “best, best” places to go and services to use! During the month of August the beaches are jam-packed, swimming pools in urbanisations are full, bars and restaurants are chokka, most — if not all — the government offices close down and so many professionals and other officials are away on holiday that you have no realistic chance of getting anything done that you may have intended to, so my advice is to take a bit of a holiday too as if you cannot use those services, then join em! August is the main month for vacations, and I have not had a vacation for approximately eight years — not to mention 14 years without any children in tow! I have therefore decided to take a well-earned short holiday — sin ninas — but I am going at the end of July due to work commitments and making sure that this little mag is available for you all to read in the first days of the month. I have decided to join the holidaymakers, and my friend Martha and I have booked a holiday to the Spanish island of Mallorca, which is the largest of the Balearic islands and is well known for its beautiful beaches of white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters. We have booked into a beautiful all-inclusive 4* hotel right on the seafront with a bar out to sea.

Strange News close to Andratx, hopefully enabling us to enjoy a well-deserved rest away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I am hoping to relax on the beach sipping a cocktail or two and top up my dismal tan — oh, and just maybe hit Magaluf one night… but thinking about that, I reckon I’m probably too old for all that now, so I will leave that to the young ’uns. I just can’t wait to get there now. As I write this, it’s four sleeps and counting. On that note, I must go and start packing my case. Have a great, fun-packed August everyone and stay cool and safe.

Prejudiced parking A total of 14 parking meters are being fixed after it was pointed out that people who live locally had to pay more than visitors. The pay and display meters on Colwyn Bay promenade told Welsh visitors that parking was free after 8am, but English speakers were given an extra two hours. The incorrect information was displayed on all machines along the road in the North Wales seaside town and was spotted by former headmaster Gareth Pritchard, who described it as ‘another waste of taxpayers’ money.’ The parking charges were introduced after a multi-million pound revamp along the seafront. A Conwy council spokesman said: ‘We are aware of this mistake and are replacing the notice to make sure we are giving accurate information. The car parking is free overnight from 4pm to 10am, as stated.’ Natural living? A woman has revealed that she is on a diet that consists of taking energy from nature and not eating any solids. Audra Bear identifies herself as a “breatharian” and claims she fasts for up to 97 days at a time because food gets in the way of her enjoyment of life. Despite the dangers and lack of any scientific backing that it works, Audra, 25, insists that it is good for her. She has tried various diets over the years, including being a vegan then a raw vegan for four years before taking on so-called pranic living and breatharianism. Some have suggested the diet is a dangerous hoax but Audra, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, spends up to three hours a day focusing on her breath work and mostly lives on teas, juices and smoothies. She said: ‘There is something magical about conscious, controlled breathing that brings you back to the core of your being. ‘Breathwork helps you to realise who you are and what you need or don’t need. It gently guides your body into para sympathetic nervous system which relieves stress, aids digestion, stops cravings, increases mental clarity and happiness.’ However nutrition scientist Helena Gibson-Moore told MailOnline: ‘Everyone needs energy (calories) for our bodies to function properly. ‘A diet that only includes fruit juices and teas is likely to be low in energy so although initial weight loss may occur, in the long term you will be missing out on important nutrients for good health.’

Strange News (Continued) All hail let loose Some of the worst hail that Mexico has ever seen fell recently — the day after temperatures reached 27 degrees Centigrade. More than 6ft of ice was left in some parts of the city of Guadalajara overnight after the freak storm hit. State governor Enrique Alfaro said: ‘I’ve never seen such scenes here. Then we ask ourselves if climate change is real!’ Nearly 200 homes and businesses reported hail damage, and at least 50 vehicles were swept away by the deluge of ice in hilly areas — some buried under piles of pellets. While no casualties were reported, two people showed early signs of hypothermia, according to the state Civil Protection office Soldiers were drafted in to help clear away the ice that had blocked many roads.

Slippery search A frantic search was launched for a 9ft-long reticulated python after it escaped from its owner’s home. The slippery character was spotted slithering down a residential street in Cambridge before it disappeared, and was not located — and caught — until two days later. Reticulated pythons are the world’s longest snake, native to south-east Asia, and can grow up to 31.5 feet in length and weigh as much as 160kg. The snakes are not venomous but can kill smaller animals by constricting around them and squeezing them to death before swallowing their victims whole. Although it is uncommon, this snake breed has been known to attack humans. In June last year, the body of Wa Tiba, 54, was found inside a python after it swallowed her whole in Indonesia. She was discovered after her sons noticed the enormous python lounging on the ground barely able to move due to an enormous bulge in its stomach.

Tip Top Tips Some great tips to remember If your washing machine or fridge is yellowy and seems old you can make it look better by cleaning it with a cloth dampend in hot water to which has been added bicarbonate of soda or ammonia. Afterwards dry it well. Make sure they are unplugged before applying. If the kitchen smells of fish after cooking it make the smell disappear by boiling two glasses of vinegar and three glasses of water. Leave to boil for a little while and the smell will vanish. When you boil salmon it loses its pink colour. To keep its colour and not effect its taste put half a lemon in the water. The spider plant is capable of filtering poisons from the air. It doesn’t need much water and doesn’t like direct sun, so it is a perfect home plant to clean the atmosphere.

Perspiration stains will disappear from clothes if a couple of asprins are dissolved in the washing water. A spot of dark foundation under a long nose makes it look shorter. If you plunge sausages into boiling water before grilling or frying them, the skins won’t burst.

One Liners Funny words from Tommy Cooper... So I was in the jungle and there was this monkey with a tin opener. I said, “You don’t need a tin opener to peel a banana.” He said, “No, this is for the custard.” This policeman came up to me with a pencil and a piece of very thin paper. He said, “I want you to trace someone for me.“ So this lorry full of tortoises collided with a van full of terrapins. It was a turtle disaster. So I told my wife I had got a job in a bowling alley. She said, “Tenpin”. I said, “No, it’s permanent.” So I told my wife that I’d opened a theatre. She said, “ Are you having me on?” I said, “Well I’ll give you an audition, but I’m not promising you anything.”

I phoned the local builders today, I said to them, “Can I have a skip outside my house?” He said, “I’m not stopping you!” So this cowboy walks in to a German car showroom and he says “Audi!” I bought a train ticket and they said “Eurostar” I said, “Well I’ve been on telly but I’m no Dean Martin”. I phoned the local gym and I asked if they could teach me how to do the splits. He said, “How flexible are you?” I said, “I can’t make Tuesday’s or Thursday’s.” So I went to the local video shop and I said, “Can I take out The Elephant Man?” He said, “He’s not your type.” I said, Can I have Batman Forever?” He said, “No, you’ll have to bring it back tomorrow.” So I fancied a game of darts with my mate. He said, “Nearest the bull goes first”. He went “Baah” and I went, “Moo”. He said, You’re closest.”

Nauru has no protected areas, no World Heritage Sites, no rivers, and just 30km of roads. Nauru has a road that is under 19 miles long and an old 2.4 mile-long railway which the government built for phosphate mining purposes in 1907. So rich were Nauru’s phosphate reserves that for a brief period in the Sixties it had the highest per capita GDP in the world. Nauru's economic downfall began when the phosphate mines became depleted. The country had the biggest phosphate deposits in the South Pacific, but due to their excessive mining activities, the mines were declared economically unviable in 2011. Nauru became a tax haven in the 1990s and offered passports for foreigners for a fee. anyone could set up a licensed bank account in the country for only $25,000, with no other requirements during the 1990s. 71.1 per cent of its 10,000 residents are obese. Only american Samoa, an unincorporated territory of the united States, can top it, making Nauru the most overweight sovereign state on the planet.

Currencies Direct News Currency outlook: Pound touches two-year low as Brexit fears reach boiling point Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.12 to €1.10 GBP/USD: Down from $1.25 to $1.23 The pound has suffered from a notable selling bias over the last month, with Sterling sentiment plummeting as the risks of a no-deal Brexit appear to have risen sharply. This comes largely as a result of the Conservative leadership election, where both candidates have presented themselves as Brexit hardliners who are willing to pull the UK out of the EU in October whether a deal is in place or not. Further weakening the pound has been some gloomy UK data, which has stoked concerns that the domestic economy may have contracted in the second quarter. Expect to see the pound remain highly sensitive to Brexit in the coming weeks, with the Bank of England’s next policy meeting also likely to keep the pressure on GBP exchange rates if the bank hints at some possible monetary easing by the end of the year. Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.89 to £0.90 EUR/USD: Steady at $1.12 Trade in the euro has been mixed over the last month, with the focus for EUR investors mostly centred on the policy plans of the European Central Bank. The ECB is now widely expected to inject fresh stimulus into the Eurozone at some point this year, be it through interest rate cuts or restarting its quantitative easing

programme, the prospect of which limited the appeal of the single currency. The ECB will meet again in the second half of July, potentially resulting in the euro moving lower if the bank more explicitly lays out its stimulus plans for the rest of the year. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.79 to £0.80 USD/EUR: Steady at €0.89 The main catalyst of movement in the US dollar over the past month has been the apparent dovish shift with in the Federal Reserve. This has prompted some notable volatility in the US dollar in recent weeks amid fluctuating Fed rate cut expectations, with some resilient US economic data at odds with some increasingly dovish chatter from Fed policy makers. Looking ahead, the Fed is widely expected to cut interest rates when the bank meets at the end of the month. However, with the move already priced in by markets any subsequent movement in the US dollar will largely depend on the bank’s forward guidance, with USD exchange rates likely to weaken if the Fed signals that this is the start of a new easing cycle. & t i Fru Facts ries Veg ji Ber Go

Goji berries have gained popularity in recent years, often promoted as a "superfood." They're thought to help prevent premature ageing, boost the immune system, have benefits for diabetes and protect against heart disease and cancer. They have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years. They have a sweet taste and can be eaten raw or consumed as a juice or herbal tea. They can also be taken as extracts, powders and tablets. All dark blue or red berries, including goji berries, contain high levels of antioxidants, which may help protect the body against damage from free radicals. What's unique about goji berries is that they contain specific antioxidants called Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, which are thought to provide a variety of impressive health benefits. In addition, goji berries provide 11 essential amino acids—more than other common berries. They are packed full of powerful antioxidants too, including carotenoids, lycopene, lutein and polysaccharides. A 100-gram serving of goji berries provides around 11 grams of protein, compared to just 1 gram of protein in every 100 grams of blueberries or raspberries. They are also rich in copper, iron, selenium and zinc, which are essential to the function of all your organs, protecting your cells and helping optimise metabolism. They are an excellent source of antioxidants, which protect against free radicals — the harmful molecules that can damage your cells. One study in healthy elderly men and women found that taking a milk-based goji berry drink daily for 90 days increased levels of the antioxidant zeaxanthin by 26 percent and increased overall antioxidant capacity by 57 percent.

Antioxidants like those in goji berries may help fight ageing by preventing free radicals from damaging collagen in the skin. Animal and test-tube studies have shown that goji berry extract may have positive effects on blood sugar control. One study gave goji berry polysaccharide extract to rats with type 2 diabetes for four weeks. The researchers found that blood glucose levels decreased in nearly 35 percent of the rats. It's thought that goji berry extract could enhance the creation of muscle and liver glycogen, a storage form of glucose that helps you maintain physical activity. It may also speed up the clearance of blood urea nitrogen, a waste product your body produces after strenuous exercise. Goji berries are high in fibre, which can help control blood sugar and appetite, helping you feel full for longer. They also have a low glycaemic index (GI) and therefore release sugar more slowly into the bloodstream, so they're thought to help improve feelings of fullness and reduce cravings. Goji berry extract may help boost immune function. One study in 60 healthy older adults found that taking 3.4 ounces (100 ml) of concentrated goji berry juice daily for 30 days led to improved immune function. More specifically, it boosted lymphocytes, the white blood cells responsible for protecting the body from harmful bacteria and viruses.

Just Dance Torre Del Mar My daughter loves to dance, so what better place than to book a dance party for her 11th Birthday than Just Dance in El Copo, Torre del Mar? Dance teacher Ritchie Lester opened the doors of ‘Just Dance’ just under a year ago and it’s becoming the new ‘in’ place to be, whether it’s to dance or to keep fit. It’s all under the one roof and definitely worth a visit. Ritche had a studio full of children aged from three up to 14 and what fun they all had. From the minute they arrived they were entertained - if they weren’t being taught some great dance routines by Ritchie himself, they were singing on the microphones, playing in the smoke machine, having their hair braided and chalked by wife Karen. They enjoyed four hours of pure fun and laughter. Just dance has classes for all ages and abilities. Learn to dance the tango, ballet, basic salsa, bachata and burlesque. The studio is also used for fitness classes too including T’ai Chi, circuit training, yoga, and can be hired for private functions. It also has a fantastic roof terrace over looking the beautiful sea. Call Ritchie: 646750592

Liberty Seguros WHAT SHOULD I DO IN THE CASE OF A CAR ACCIDENT? Summer is here in beautiful, sunny Spain. With temperatures soaring it’s a great feeling, although a tad hot at times for all expats that live and work in this tranquilo environment; tranquilo that is until the influx of tourists from many countries around the world especially from Britain and the rest of Europe. Now, more than other times during the year, one needs to be even more careful than ever on the roads. With all these extra cars and drivers, who are perhaps more used to driving on the left, an increase in the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable. Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month. Also check your car’s radiator level is topped up; the last thing you want is to overheat and have to wait for a breakdown truck on the edge of a busy motorway! It’s also illegal to run out of screen wash, so make sure this is topped up too. And driving with flip-flops or shoes with no back could be punishable by fine. Needless to say, seat belts must be worn all round, and young children need safety harnesses. Using mobile phones are a definite no, INCLUDING texting, which is probably worse than speaking. Should the unthinkable happen, here are some tips that everyone, from a new driver to an experienced one, should remember in the case of an accident: • Stay calm and wear the reflective vest • Get to a safe area near the accident scene, turn on your emergency flashers and use the two triangles • Make sure everyone is okay and call 112, if necessary • When it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles involved, damage, road signs, etc. • Get statements and contact information from any witnesses • Complete the accident report: write down

the other driver's licence number, insurance details, vehicle information and phone number. Remember it has to be signed by both drivers and reported within seven days; If you need road assistance, call immediately 900 101 369, Liberty Freephone Number, where you will be attended in your own language. LIBERTY SEGUROS Car Insurance is tailor-made with you in mind and is perfect for Expats in Spain. It offers total coverage to both the driver and passengers in case of an accident, as well as 24/7 roadside assistance by calling a freephone number. It also includes a courtesy car for up to 35 days, personal liability for you as a pedestrian or amateur cyclist and you will get a 30% compensation on top of book value in case of total loss or theft. You can also select a vehicle repair garage of your choice to trust and give you peace of mind. Liberty Seguros is considered the preferred expat insurer in Spain today and has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents, who have many years of experience, and are dedicated to give you in-depth information about the different policies not only for car, but also life, home, business, commercial, funeral, etc., and advise you on the best cover to suit you and your family, in your own language. To find out more visit www.libertyexpatriates.es or call 91 342 25 49. Happy holidays! See main advert on page 27

A-Z Of Spain Following on from The Sentinella’s journey through the alphabet to discover the joys of Spain. This month we bring you the letter O. Octopus - (pulpo) In fishy restaurants over here, ‘pulpo’ is a common speciality. Also, if you go scuba diving an octopus is one of the delightful things you will more than likely see. Octopuses have eight legs and are known for being one of the most intelligent creatures, on an even keel with dogs in fact. They are able to change colour instantly to blend in with their surroundings. All octopuses are more-or-less the same shape, however they do come in all sorts of different sizes. They all have a rounded head called the mantle, with eyes on either side and a mouth at one end. Surounding the mouth are eight muscular arms, which each boast a double row of suckers, used for gripping. Between the base of the arms there is a web, of a similar appearance to the wing of a bat. Octopuses can suck water into the web and

then expel it quickly by contracing it. This produces a jet of water, which helps to propel the octopus quickly away from danger. Orange Trees - These blooming lovely shrubs can be found in practically every town, pueblo and city. One thing’s for sure... no matter how many water shortages we come across, there’ll never be an orange shortage! Olives - If you go in a Spanish restaurant and your meal doesn’t involve olives in some shape or form then there’s something seriously wrong. The little green and black fruits are everywhere here and around the Granada area there is field after field cramed full of olive trees. I love the big glass jar from Mercadona.

Popular film, theatre and TV actress Zoe Wanamaker was born on May 13, 1949, in New York City. Her father, Sam, was a legendary Hollywood film-maker known for his Westerns — he was also credited with putting John Wayne on the acting map. Zoe grew up in England after her father was blacklisted during the McCarthy hearings investigating perceived Communist sympathies within the film industry. When appearing in an episode of the popular TV series ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ she revealed she had been to see the FBI files in Washington. “Daddy's file, full of bits blanked out, is so very thick and I discovered that he must have been tipped off in 1951 that he was going to be subpoenaed by McCarthy's committee,” she said during the programme. “He took a film job in England and we came over — Mummy, my elder sister and I — on the Queen Mary.” She has always said that even when she is in America, she still feels British and is proud of it. Amongst her best-known TV roles is that of Susan Harper in the popular and long-running series My Family, in which she co-stars alongside Robert Lindsay. A well-respected classical actress, she has appeared in numerous productions and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for many years. Her father always wanted to rebuild the Globe Theatre, but died before the work was completed. She was awarded the 1984 London Critics Circle Award (Drama Theatre Award) for best

Zoe has been nominated for Tony Awards three times, and in 1998, received the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actress of the 1997 season for her performance in "Electra" at the Donmar Warehouse. She has been married to Gawn Grainger since November 1994, but has no children. Zoe officially became a British citizen in 2000 after being notified she would be made a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2001 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to drama, which she received from the Queen at Buckingham Palace. As a US citizen, she would only have been eligible to receive an honorary CBE awarded by the foreign secretary. She was nominated for a 2002 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actress of 2001 for her performance in "Boston Marriage", performed at the Donmar Warehouse and at the New Ambassador's Theatres, London. She was awarded the 2006 New York City Drama Desk Award for outstanding ensemble performance for the Belasco Theatre production of Awake and Sing, and received a Tony Award nomination in 2006 for best performance by a featured actress in that same role. She was awarded 'Best Actress' in 2010 for 'All My Sons' from WhatsOnStage.com. She and Kathryn Hunter (in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’) were the only American-born cast members in any of the "Harry Potter" movies whose lines were not dubbed over by a British cast member. (In 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Verne Troyer's lines [as Griphook] were dubbed by Warwick Davis.)

To advertise call 664 210 468 or email sales@thesentinella.com Love all The Duchess of Sussex thrilled Wimbledon fans after making a surprise appearance at the event. Meghan was spotted at court one to attend the match of her good friend Serena Williams. She was pictured with two friends as she cheered Serena to victory on the fourth day of the tennis tournament. The 37-year-old Duchess, who gave birth to her first child with husband Prince Harry in May, wore a special piece of jewellery — bearing the letter ‘A’ for Archie — to pay tribute to their little one. The day out at Wimbledon was one of the first public outings Meghan made since giving birth. Sad prophecy Racing pundit and Celebrity Big Brother star John McCririck, whose death was announced recently, foreshadowed his demise in a sad interview about his health last October, announcing: "I don't expect to be alive this time next year." The gaunt TV star, who appeared as a guest on the TV show “This Morning,” had lost three stone in weight as he battled chest problems and severe flu. The 79-year-old told the Daily Mail: "Life is empty. I don't expect to be alive this time next year. It's a question of slipping away." The TV star blamed not being able to work any more for his deterioration. He worked for Channel 4 for 28 years, before being “let go” in 2012. He accused Channel 4 of ageism and took the network to an employment tribunal, where he lost his case. Sarah grief TV presenter Susanna Reid admitted that watching the documentary she made about murdered schoolgirl Sarah Payne left her with

a broken heart. Shortly after the concluding part of the programme was broadcast, the Good Morning Britain host, 48, said it had been an "honour" to make the series and thanked Sarah's mum and family for being "so open" about their horrific experience. The abduction and murder of eight-year-old Sarah from a field near her grandparents' home in Sussex in July 2000 shocked the nation, and after it was revealed that a previously convicted paedophile, Roy Whiting, was responsible, Sara campaigned to get the law changed so concerned parents could access the sex offenders’ register. The documentary, Sarah Payne: The Untold Story, saw mum Sara make an emotional 'final visit' to the place where her daughter was abducted and murdered 19 years ago in a bid to 'exorcise ghosts'.

New liver for Stevie Music icon Stevie Wonder told fans at his Hyde Park show in central London that he will undergo a kidney transplant later this year. Speaking to the crowd at his headline slot at the annual BST Hyde Park event, he said he will perform three more shows before taking a break ahead of the procedure planned for September. Wonder said he wanted to tell his fans first, before rumours about his health started. The 69-year-old American performed some of the biggest hits of the 20th century, including Signed, Sealed, Delivered and Master Blaster. He was supported by Lionel Richie, who in the past has cited Wonder as his inspiration for getting into the music business.

Poems By Tricia Gabbitas Hi. I’m Tricia Gabbitas and I hope you’ve been enjoying my verses over the past few months and using them in your own cards and letters. I wrote my first poem at school in Yorkshire when I was 13 and since then I’ve written almost a thousand. For 25 years I printed my verses, with pictures, onto little cards and gave them to hospitals, hospices, charities and friends. I created a small booklet of poems for MacMillan Nurses, in memory of my mother and ten booklets with ten Christian poems in each for United Christian Broadcasters in UK. I also had a blog for ten years where all my work was available free for people who made their own cards and during that time it logged over 27,000 page-views.

In 2009 I recorded 20 Gospel songs that I’d composed and, with John Springate who did my backing tracks, created a CD. Since 2016 I’ve published my poetry in 4 books, my autobiography, a book of short stories and a book of holiday anecdotes. Now, at 70, I’m preparing my next book, sharing all the ways I’ve found that make life and health better. You can see my books on Amazon and hear my songs on YouTube, or just Google my name! I’m really grateful to Kami, our Sentinella editor, for publishing the verses and this month’s offering is especially for the “holiday visitor season”. Cut it out and stick it in your guest room – if you dare! Best wishes. Tricia x

How To Keep Cool With No Pain This Summer Keep it cool. Summer is officially here and with it comes the heat! As the temperature has turned up a notch we are cranking up the air conditioning in the car and directing our fans at full speed onto our sleeping bodies. The only problem with this, though, is that our muscles are suffering, this is because the concentrated cool air can make muscles tense up and cramp. This problem is especially common for people who sleep with the fan near their face and neck. If you've been waking up with a stiff neck in the morning, it might be because of the constant breeze.

develops pain in the joints and muscles.

Obviously we still need our air conditioning and fans but make sure your air conditioning is on an ambient temperature and not ice cold and is not directed at you but more to circulate around the car or area that you would like to cool down. Also point your fans slightly away from you and switch them to oscillate.

The direct air conditioning in the car is also a cause of muscle pain. Low temperature can lead to muscle contractions, headaches and backaches. When your body stays in temperatures that are below its liking, it

CAS (Costa Animal Society) Each month the Costa Animal Society (CAS) allocates â‚Ź500 to help the homeless kitten and cat population in Nerja, Maro and the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately in the process of rescuing our feline friends and providing for the stable cat colonies that we are aware of those funds are quickly exhausted. Examples of costs incurred include: food, blood tests, neutering, vaccinations, treatment for worms, fleas and ticks, microchipping and providing the cats with passports for rehoming abroad. If foster homes cannot be found, kenneling costs can quickly escalate. Thus, the adding machine tape runs on and on.

Unspoilt Andalusia Happy and Healthy in the South of Spain! My mini articles in ‘the little mag’ normally relate in some shape or form to the housing market here and what’s for sale, people’s experiences and market trends. But this month I wanted to write about a little experience with the health service here. Recently a friend called me, in a terrible state, having got caught up in a dog fight, trying to separate two dogs and ending up with a nasty, albeit unintentional bite that needed urgent treatment. As there were no broken bones, I collected her and headed for the Velez-Malaga emergency clinic by the social security office. We were seen in record time (maybe a 5 minute wait). The staff were simply wonderful, kind and caring right from the start, concerned for my friend’s feelings and concerns, and efficient and careful in treating her wound. At every moment they were friendly, jolly and amenable. While I was there, I helped with the paperwork, and took advantage of the moment to remind them about when I had come in, around 3 months

beforehand, with a head wound, when I tripped over a cable in the office and received a bad cut on my forehead. The lady remembered me! I told her how I had wanted to return to say a big thank you for how well they had treated me in a vulnerable moment and how cared for and reassured I had felt by being in their hands. The lady told me that it was so good to have such positive feedback, as patients rarely bother to get back in touch after treatment, and it really made their day when it happened! It was only a small event, and I know that not all experiences in emergency health situations are always positive, but I have always been lucky enough to have a good experience here, and this incident made me realise how lucky we are to have access to such a good health service – long may it continue, and let’s give them our support and gratitude when due. Dear Penny Agony Aunt Penny gives readers, advice, help and guidance through the minefield called life.

Dear Penny

I have met the most adorable man, who although is not the most pleasing on the eye, is lovely, kind, unselfish and knows how to treat a lady. He makes me laugh, makes me cry (with laughter), makes me glow and brings out the best side of me. He has recently indicated that he would like more than just friendship and really it seems on that score the ball is in my court. But I don’t know what to do. This man is everything I could want on the inside, but his looks sadly don’t leave me weak at the knees..! Would it be wrong to begin a love affair with this man even though he doesn’t make me go phwoaaaar! Anon, Torrox Costa Penny Says: Oh who cares what he looks like?! Personality speaks volumes when it comes to being part of a loving, caring relationship. I mean what’s the point of walking along with a stud muffin on your arm, if he is a nasty piece of work, makes you miserable and has no personality?! A man’s looks are not what will make you happy long-term. Instead it is the beauty of the person within. Don’t be afraid of what others may think.. Do what makes you happy and you’ll be the one laughing in the end. Trust me, I’m a doctor (sort of)!

Yours Penny

Axarquia: Thank You For The Music! One of the best things about life in Axarquia (and there are many) is the long list of free entertainment. Whether you’re located in the bustling international hub that’s Torre Del Mar, the lofty heights of Comares or the blink and you’ll miss it pueblo of Los Gomez, there’s always something happening that usually involves live music and spontaneous dancing.

working out how to use the toilet. I ended up imprisoned from my stomach up in a series of huge ruffles in a toilet the size of a cat litter tray. Recent Ferias have been less fraught. I’ve ditched the dress in favour of more comfortable clothes and loved it. Wherever you live, try to go to at least one over the summer season.

By August, you might find that your bank is barely open, your hairdresser has cleared off to the beach and important appointments must wait until Autumn: but you will be able to party.

If you like the big city, club style atmosphere, then Malaga is a good choice. You get 2 options: the city centre or the colossal Feria grounds. Hop on the bus and avoid difficult parking. If you miss the last bus, dance on throughout the night, grab churros at 6am and take the first bus back.

Keeping it live Live music here is pretty damn good. Like anywhere, there are some singers, duets and bands whose sets make me wonder if its Groundhog Day, I’ve boarded a 1970s cruise ship or I’m in God’s waiting room. However, on the whole, I’m normally yelling, “¡Autre! ¡Autre mas!” sometime after 1am and that’s not for more drink but just one more chance to shake my stuff!

The pueblo Feria I love a pueblo Feria, where villages are transformed from sleepy hamlets to all night danceathons. Comares’ tiny square is magicked into a live venue with lights and sounds to rival many major stadiums. Trapiche, usually just one street and a few feral cats, manages to erect a marquee that holds the whole village, friends, musicians, a bar and food and an inflatable castle.

At the weekends, my favourite venues are La Bamba and Scirocco’s. I didn’t think I liked tributes acts until I saw Tina Turner, Whitney Houston and Diana Ross all on the same night. Janet Jaye, can belt out a tune in many different guises! At some point at Scirocco’s, I found my dancing feet and I didn’t lose them again until 5am, whereupon I’d be seamlessly transported to La Bamba.

Wherever you decide to enjoy yourself this summer, revel in the fact that even the best live music, DJ sets and dancing simply costs you the price of your drinks. iParty on!

Most acts play all across Axarquia. Flick through The Sentinella as there are lots of potential venues listed. I’ll recommend three bands based solely on my music taste and the fun I’ve had watching them. The Rafaguita Band, featuring Astrid de Does-Nelom on vocals, Groove Machine with Manuela Nelom are both powerhouses of rock, blues, jazz and funk. Finally, the diminutive singer from the confusingly named Little Less, as everyone wants more, packs a mean vocal punch too. I’m sure anyone who has visited a chiringuito, bar or restaurant will add to or challenge my choices! ¡Feria! My earliest memories of Feria are rather ignominious. I went to the Behemoth that is Sevilla Feria fully attired in a traje, never fully

Worthy Wines: Romania Romania has borders with several countries, that include Bulgaria, Ukraine and Hungary, as well as bordering the Black Sea. Tourism plays a big role in the economy of the country, with many visitors enjoying sites, including Black Sea resorts, plus preserved cities and also castles. The cuisine of Romania has both Austrian and German influences.

Prince Stirbey Cramposie is a sparkling wine, made with the indigenous white grape, Cramposie and by the traditional method. This extra brut, pale-yellow production is both fruity and fresh. The very pleasant bouquet leads to the fruit pleasures on the mouth and extends for a long finish. Prince Stirbey Tamaioasa Romanesca is a very popular dry white wine and uses the grape of

Excellent Romanian wines are produced, utilising numerous native, local and international grape varieties, with viticulture having a history of 6000+ years, making it one of the oldest in the world. Many wines constantly receive prestigious awards, at events and competitions, globally.

the same name, to great advantage. An intense bouquet greets the nasal senses, which continues on to the mouthfeel. Prince Stirbey Novac is made using Novac grapes. Extremely popular, this red wine pleases many. The bouquet has plenty of fruits, that follow to the mouthfeel, which is ripe and juicy. Prince Stirbey Negru de Dragasani (and the Rezerva production) are both further splendid red wines, selected for quality, with intense bouquets and abundances of dark fruits, for the mouth and palate, being very evident. Medium, to full-bodied, smooth and velvet-like, they are perfect to accompany a lot of cuisine, including red meats, superbly.

The Prince Stirbey vineyard has been family-owned for 300 years. Today, the vineyard is owned and managed by Baroness Ileana Kripp, whose ancestors were the founders, and her husband Jakob. At the turn of this century a new winery was constructed, incorporating modern technology, with wines produced by Oliver Bauer. The winery now produces natural wines, to an exceptional standard, which are available in many countries, including the UK.

One of the most delightful things about La Vaqueria is the unique artyness of it all. Nestling in the shady avocados at the back of Benamargosa, where village meets "campo" it is like stepping into another world as soon as you cross that threshold! The owner artist originally opened her doors as an art studio but it soon became apparent that her guests were going to need a cuppa and a slice of cake at the very least! The menu available today has grown over the years and offers an eclectic mix of flavours, inline with the originality of the place itself. The art that you see here is mostly by Su herself although there is hanging space available for visiting artists which helps keep it all fresh and interesting. There are lots of mosaics and paintings to peruse and many are for sale. As the weather starts to cool down it is the perfect time of year to talk commissions if you would like to own a mosaic, have a mural designed for you or get some great home and garden accessories made for you. Pop into the shop during the week to discuss your ideas or hang out in the garden on a Sunday with the live music and Sunday Buffet relaxing and being inspired. We are looking forward to hearing from you. La Vaqueria Team x
