m Fro Ed... the Now that I’m a married woman, my husband and I have been looking at where to go for our honeymoon. We’re thinking that maybe Hawaii is a good option – hot and sunny at this time of the year, plus exotic, and a very spiritual place too, with the most incredible energy. Plus, it seems like one of the only typical honeymoon pieces of paradise that we can visit, as I’m not allowed outside of the USA for 90 days while my immigration papers are processed by the government. Having done a bit of research we’re looking at travelling to Kauhai, which is a quieter part of Hawaii and a pretty place to relax. So by the time this magazine has gone to print and you’re reading this editorial, I may well be honeymooning in the Hawaiian sunshine! I heard that the weather has been amazing in Spain considering the time of year – it’s probably a lot warmer there than it is here in Ketchum, Idaho. We’re expecting a heavy snowfall at the weekend and soon after that Baldy Mountain and the ski resort here will officially open, and then the tourists pour in. Perhaps it’s time to finally learn how to ski! I did attempt snowboarding a few years ago on the Sierra Nevada, but unfortunately I fell on a fast stretch and sprained my arm resulting in a sling for ten days or so. I’ll let you know how I get on…

Strange News Call Diverted A petrol station clerk in Florida has been saved from a robber's bullet by his mobile phone. The attempted robbery took place in Winter Garden, a suburb of Orlando. A man entered the Hess gas station and asked a clerk for help. He then showed the worker a revolver and demanded that he open the safe. When the clerk could not open the safe, the robber ordered a second clerk to try. He was also unsuccessful.The suspect fired a round at one of the clerks and fled. The man did not realise the bullet had been stopped by the phone until he pulled the device out of his shirt pocket. The clerk had just minor injuries. Banjo Style A banjo-playing police officer in Birmingham has written a crime prevention song entitled ‘When I'm Burgling Houses’. Sergeant Giles Dean hopes his George Formby-style song, performed to the tune of ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows’, will persuade people to keep their homes and cars secure. He wrote the song, which he performs on a banjo-ukulele hybrid called a banjolele, to encourage people to be more careful with their possessions. "It's incredible how many people still leave cars unlocked and with valuables on display, or leave windows open at night or when the house is empty," he says. Fan Mail A Harry Potter fan suffering from leukaemia had her sixth birthday wish of receiving a letter from abroad come true - when she received more than a million cards. Oliwia Gandecka, from Zielona Gora, Poland, was diagnosed with the disease last year and in a bid to keep her spirits up, her family asked her what she would want for her birthday. She said it would be magic if she could get a card from abroad, because Harry Potter's start to a better life had begun when he was sent hundreds of letters on his birthday inviting him to attend Hogwarts. So her parents turned to social media with pals to start the ‘Birthday Card for Oliwia’ campaign. Spokesman Marta Jagiello said: "We started a campaign on Facebook and on Harry Potter forums. "Just one card would have been enough to see her smile, but she was grinning from ear to ear when she saw all the well wishes she got from all over the world."

New Supermarket Scam Be careful when Christmas shopping and Please Please Please - make yourself aware of where this is happening AND tell your friends! Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply dropping into Supersol for a bit of shopping has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends. Here's how the scam works: Two seriously good-looking, young men with foreign accents come over to your car and help pack your shopping into the boot. They then both start cleaning your windscreen. Their firm young bodies bulging out of their skimpy vest tops. It's impossible not to look!
When you thank them and offer them a tip, they'll say 'No' and instead ask you for a lift to another store, in my case, Mercadona. You agree and they both get in the backseat. On the way, they start undressing, and both get completely naked. Then, when you pull over to remonstrate, one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts kissing you, touching you intimately, and thrusting himself against you, while the other one steals your purse! I had my purse stolen Oct 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, and 29th. Also Nov 1st, 4th, twice on the 6th, three times last Saturday and very likely again this coming weekend. So Be Warned!!! P.S. Lidl have purses on sale for ÂŁ1.99 each, Aldi are ÂŁ1.75 and look nicer.

Darwin Awards 2013 They dwell among us!!! Eighth Place In Detroit, a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys. Seventh Place A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who "totally zoned when he ran", accidentally jogged off a 100-foot high cliff on his daily run. Sixth Place While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom, when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach used their hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital. Fifth Place Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor. Fourth Place Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger. Third Place After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a holdup and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed
23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt. Honorable Mention Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2am. so they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen. Apparently they failed to notice that the window was closed. Runner up Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several friends when one of them said they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of traffic. The conversation grew more excited, and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4.30am. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge, they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope. Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of lineman's cable lay nearby. They secured one end around Bingham's leg and then tied the other to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located. And the winner is... Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt (Paderborn, Germany) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say illfated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded. The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves... 'S*** happens'

In an eerie absence of sound, debris rips explosively through the space station and astronauts rebound off the surfaces they are struggling to grab ahold of. Coral Bel Canto Choir Countdown To A Musical Christmas! The weeks leading up to Christmas are always busy, but for the members of Velez Malaga’s International choir, Coral Bel Canto, they couldn’t be busier. Since the choir started in September there has been one important question to be answered. “When are we going to hold our first concert?” The question was finally answered by the choir’s musical director Manuel Jesús Sanchidrián Torti: “You are ready. We will have a Christmas concert, and I will bring my orchestra and my children’s choir from Malaga to perform alongside you.” All that remained was to organise everything: select a date, book the venue, decide what to wear, make programmes, design and print posters, buy costume accessories, arrange a rehearsal with the orchestra in Malaga, organise a bus to bring the orchestra to Velez, order food for the performers on the day of the concert, schedule extra rehearsals... The list goes on. The result is that there will be a Christmas concert on 14th Dec at 8pm. It will be in the beautiful 16th Century church of the Convent of Las Claras in Calle Félix Lomas, Vélez-Málaga. Admission is FREE and all are welcome to come and celebrate a musical Christmas. Whiplash is a term used to describe a neck injury caused by a sudden movement of the head forwards, backwards or sideways. It often occurs after a sudden impact such as a road traffic accident. The vigorous movement of the head damages the ligaments and tendons in the neck. Tendons are tough, fibrous bands that connect muscles to bone. Ligaments are the fibrous connective tissues that link two bones together at a joint. Common symptoms of whiplash include: • neck pain and stiffness • tenderness over the neck muscles • reduced and painful neck movements • headaches After an accident, the symptoms of whiplash often take a while (6-12 hours) to develop. The neck pain and stiffness is often worse on the day after the injury and may get worse for several days afterwards. Causes of whiplash Road accidents are the main cause of whiplash, but it can also occur following: • a sudden blow to the head – for example, during contact sports such as boxing or rugby • a slip or fall where the head is suddenly and violently jolted backwards

Your neck may be painful, but keeping it mobile from an early stage will improve its functionality and speed up your recovery. Painkillers, such as paracetamol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen, can be used to help relieve the pain.

What is Leishmaniosis? Bought to us by Tina from Happy Hounds. what is leishmaniosis? Leishmaniosis is a severe, often fatal disease spread from dog to dog by sandfly bites. The disease is particularly prevalent in the Mediterranean but it appears to be spreading further north in Europe. Dogs can be bitten up to 100 times an hour during the sandfly season, which runs from May to September, and bites are most likely to occur around dawn and dusk. There are 2.5 million dogs in Europe already affected with this parasite.
Treatment - Unfortunately, treatment is often costly and extensive and is not curative, so preventative measures are advisable. At the moment there is no cure for canine leishmaniasis as the parasite continues to live in the bone marrow, but there are drugs available to manage the disease. The main drugs used in Spain are Glucantime, Alopurinol, Levamisol and Milteforan.
Symptoms - Symptoms include fever, hair loss (particularly around the ears and muzzle), weight loss, skin sores and poor nails.

what causes leishmaniosis? Leishmaniosis is caused by a microscopic parasite called Leishmania infantum which is spread via sandfly bites. An infected sandfly bites a dog (usually on the muzzle or ears) and deposits the parasite under the skin, causing a lesion called a chancre. The parasite then attacks the dog’s cells, damaging the immune system and a variety of body systems leading to serious disorders including skin disease, anaemia, arthritis, eye problems and kidney diseases.
Prevention - Some products are licensed to kill sandflies and help prevent them from biting. There are ways to protect your dog although none are 100 per cent effective. A Scalibor collar seems to be the most effective; they are still active when wet and also control ticks and fleas, however there is now is a new vaccine course which involves three injections given at three-week intervals and will give your pet long term defence. Only one annual vaccination is then needed.

New Mum In Town Autumn has arrived and I am loving the fact that I can dress Jazmin in snug, warm and cosy winter 'woollies'. She looks gorgeous and warm as toast, but I cannot believe that people are already complaining about the 'cold'. Come on...we are never happy, are we? Baby girl (although not so much a baby anymore) is really blossoming and her development is amazing. We now have proper conversations (albeit the majority is a special baby talk, which only babies seem to understand and we Mummies just nod), and she is getting really REALLY good at stating... sorry... demanding what she wants and when, then throwing a HUGE tantrum when those needs (commands) are not met... does she really take after her Mummy?

I made a mental note to keep calm and breathe (and to think of the deserved glass of vino waiting for me at home). It was a disappointing first day back, but we will just move on and forget. Swimming is back! Hooray... routine and exercise, and this year Miss J's little bestie is joining us... So, here we are, day one of swimming. Now I am an experienced and expert Mama (ha ha), this is bound to be easy. The first challenge on the agenda... the changing room. Jazmin protested a little, but she soon got over it when she realised that she was wearing her brand new Peppa Pig swimming costume! Oh yes... bought from the one and only Peppa Pig World! Jazmin refused her swimming hat but that must have been due to the unbearable heat. She will lighten up once she sees the water. Anyhow, poolside and class is about to begin... yippee.... Oh, my days! What a first day back! Not only did Miss J flat out refuse her hat, but she also refused to go into the water... and once in, it was TEARS TEARS TEARS! I was shocked to have come away with my hearing intact! Her friend showed no fears or signs of tantrums, but Jazmin certainly made up for it with her

Totalán
Between the Axarquía and the Montes of Málaga is the small village of Totalán, part of the scenic Route of the Raisin, 13 kilometres inland from the coast at Rincon de la Victoria and 22 kilometres from Málaga, it is approached from the autovia by coming off at the Centro Comercial Rincon de la Victoria and then turning right and driving inland, winding up along and above the dry river bed for about 300 metres until you approach the village where the first thing you notice is the new Paseo de Salud, built by the town in 2009 to encourage its residents to take a healthy stroll. There are strategically placed benches where walkers can sit and take a break whilst admiring the views, smooth mountains full of almond and olive trees. Mind you walking through the village itself might seem good enough exercise as it is very steep and there are lots of steps to get the thighs in shape! Totalán was apparently named for the Arab pastry Torta and its most famous festival, of Provincial Interest, held in November each year if the Chanfaina Fiesta which celebrates a popular and ancient dish named Chanfaina,
a kind of stew, made from potatoes, olive oil, offal, black pudding, sausages, breadcrumbs, garlic, cloves, vinegar, salt, pepper and cumin. So with food very much at the forefront perhaps the town hall knew what it was talking about when it wanted its inhabitants to go and exercise! One of the first squares you find in the village itself is the Plaza de la Constitucion where the 17th century church of Santa Ana, built in 1505 complete with an Arab Arch dominates the skyline. You can also find a baker´s, a chemist, a bank and one of the entrances to the town hall. Totalán may be small but it has its claim to fame! Paco and María, the parents of the singer and actor Antonio Molina, were both born in the village and the main square, where you can easily park your car, is named after their famous son, Plaza Antonio Molina. There is a plaque that says although he was born in Málaga he learned to sing in Totalán. As did the flamenco singer Enrique Castillo who was also born in the village. When you leave the village, instead of driving back the way you came from the Centro Comercial, why not carry on, drive over the bridge and make your way back via the village of Olías where you can stop for a drink before descending down the steep and windy road that leads you back to Málaga. The views are spectacular!

Recipe Of The Month Finger-licking ribs Servings 6 • Prep time 2hr • Cook time 1hr 20min Ingredients 3kg pork spare ribs For the marinade 300ml (½ pt) tomato ketchup 300ml (½ pt) soy sauce 125g (4½ oz) clear honey 5cm (2”) piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 4 cloves garlic, crushed 5 tbsp dry sherry 1 tsp ground star anise 1 tbsp chopped rosemary Preparation 1. Put all the marinade ingredients in a large shallow dish, then mix thoroughly. 2. Add the ribs and turn them in the mixture to coat evenly. Cover and leave to marinate in a cool place for 2–4 hours, or in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

3. Put the ribs in a large, deep saucepan (you may have to split the sheet in half to fit). Pour over the tomato ketchup mixture and add just enough water to cover the ribs completely. 4. Bring to a simmer, then cover and cook over a medium heat for about 1 hour, until completely tender. 5. Remove the ribs from the heat and transfer to a large shallow non-metallic dish. Allow the ribs to cool in the marinade, then chill until ready to put on the barbecue. They can be kept in the fridge for up to 24 hours. 6. When ready to use the ribs, carefully scoop off the fat from the top of the mixture and discard, then allow the mixture to come back to room temperature. 7. Drain off all the marinade and pour some into a large, wide saucepan. Cook it over a medium heat, stirring occasionally, until reduced to a sticky coating consistency. 8. Set the ribs on the barbecue grill over a medium-high heat and cook for 8–10 minutes each side, occasionally basting or painting the ribs with the reduced marinade until lightly charred. To serve, cut into single ribs and arrange on a large platter.

The mimic octopus is the only known aquatic species to be able to impersonate an array of different sea animals via behaviour. Although many animals can imitate a different species to avoid or intimidate predators, the mimic octopus is the only one which can choose from many types of forms depending on what predator they are trying to elude. The mimic octopus reaches about 60cm in length and is typically brown and white striped. Some other octopi can blend into the sea floor to appear as rocks, but the mimic octopi can take on the form of up to 15 other creatures.
It was not discovered officially until 1998, when it was found off the coast of Sulawesi in Indonesia on the bottom of a muddy river mouth. For the next two years, scientists filmed nine different mimic octopi impersonating sea snakes, lionfish, and flatfish—a strategy used to avoid predators.
Mimic octopi have been observed shifting between impersonations as they cross the ocean floor to return to their burrow.
The mimic octopus uses a jet of water through its funnel to glide over the sand while searching for prey -- typically small fish, crabs and worms.
Octopiin general are highly intelligent -- possibly more so than any other order of invertebrates.
Like ‘normal’ octopi, the mimic octopus has three hearts.

Should You Really Have To Squint? Strange question? Well one of the reasons why we Northern Europeans live here in Andalucia is for the sunshine. I spent three weeks in the UK just recently and it was grey and overcast the whole time! But at this time of year we often find that looking out over our surroundings, we have to squint because of the low level sunshine. Buena Vista Petanca Club’s New Polos Buena Vista Petanca Club plays at Merendero Pepe Mesa on the Playazo beach, Nerja and is a thriving club with about 100 members. The club has eight pistes situated behind the merendero and plays throughout the year on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings (10.30am). Buena Vista was founded by Bob Miles (now its honorary Life Member) and originally played on a beachside location at Torrox-Costa. However it was required to relocate in 2011 and was offered a new home by local businessman Pepe Mesa who had taken over the merendero.
The club runs a series of competitions throughout the year with cups and prizes for the winners and runners-up and its social activities include monthly quiz nights. Guests are welcome, paying €1 a head per session.
