m Fro Ed... the Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way, oh what fun it is to ride on a one-horse open sleigh …. but WHOA!!! Hold on a moment — I feel like I am having a massive deja vu moment whilst writing this editorial as I am certain I only referred to Christmas less than six months ago, yet here I am, now writing about it again! But yes, it really IS Christmas again. How can that be? Obviously I realise we have done all the months of the year — well almost — and all the seasons, but it just doesn’t feel like nearly 365 days ago that I was running around like a headless chicken buying those last-minute Christmas presents. I think the problem these days is that too many people start celebrating Christmas too early, and for me it takes the fun away from it a little bit. In a sad way, the shops in Spain seem to have finally cracked on to the fact that if they advertise Christmas products at the beginning of November, then it means they will get more sales. This I ‘get’, and in a good way, as it does make it feel a bit more Christmassy — something that has been severely lacking in the years gone by — and many retail outlets count on the Christmas season to hit their targets and profits for the year. They are under a lot of pressure to maximise their sales so, by all means buy that new Christmas decoration or tinsel for the tree BUT …. I would plead with you to leave it until at least December to actually display it! I mean, putting your Christmas tree up at the beginning of November — before we have even have had time to remember what we did on Halloween the night before — is pretty much a whole month too early, so is it any wonder I feel like we only had Christmas less than six months ago?

I think people who put their trees up early get over-excited and love the over-indulgence of it. Those of us who merely just like or tolerate it, however, are happy to wait until nearer the time and we still end up getting fed up with the whole thing before we get anywhere near it. Roll on January!

Strange News Seriously, though, I really am a genuine lover of Christmas time, but it just seems to be getting earlier and earlier every year. And on that note, I’m off to wrap all my presents that I bought in January 2019! :) I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone reading this a very merry and special Christmas and may Santa Claus bring everything you wished for. Enjoy the read — especially with a full glass of Buck’s fizz!

‘Roo roll’ anyone? Most tourists expect to see a kangaroo or two when they visit the Australian outback, but a pair of British backpackers were astonished when they stumbled across a pair enjoying an unconventional snack in their camping resort toilet. An online video shows the hilarious moment a group of lads found two roos munching on their loo roll at Flinders Ranges National Park in South Australia. Matt Trayner, 29, had been out drinking with his girlfriend and friends when they staggered over to the makeshift bathrooms in Wilpena Pound Resort. He pushed open the door to the men’s to find two kangaroos already occupying the toilets. Matt, originally from Caterham, Surrey, filmed the incident and posted it on the internet. He said: ‘You don’t imagine having to battle for the loos with two kangaroos munching away on toilet paper late at night. It was a surreal experience, and a very funny one.’ Sea mystery Experts have been called in to try and work out what substance made the sea in Cornwall turn an orange colour recently. There are fears that the rusty-brown liquid could be as a result of overflowing sewage after swimmers reported being left with ‘burning’ and ‘sore patches of skin’. Kate Robarts, who was in the sea when it changed colour, said many people who were in the sea at the time suddenly developed a rash. She said: ‘The sea was absolutely clear when we got in at 12.20pm but the bloom reached the shore by mid-afternoon. Six of us suffered patches of skin irritation which looked like jellyfish stings; the sensation was of burning.’ She explained that they had their skin checked after the incident happened. ‘Two of us went to the minor injury unit and were advised to all shower well to make sure nothing was on our skin,’ added Kate. ‘I don’t think we were in it for long enough to suffer any worse symptoms – I hope.’ A spokesman from the Environment Agency said: ‘We have collected a sample from the next morning’s tide and are analysing it. We recommend bathers avoid any discoloured water.

Strange News (Continued) Punisher punished An Indonesian man was caned 28 times under harsh adultery laws he helped create. When authorities found out Mukhlis bin Muhammad had been having an affair, he was taken to a park and struck by an Islamic religious officer. The woman he was sleeping with was also punished at a public ceremony, taking 23 lashes. Muhammad, 46, worked for a clerical organisation which advises the local government of Aceh, the only province in the country enforcing Sharia law. The ultra-conservative region uses public caning as a punishment for a number of offences including theft and gambling, drinking alcohol and pre-marital sex. It is also used as a penalty for homosexuality, which was outlawed in 2014 by the province. Human rights campaigners have called for public floggings to be discontinued in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. Researcher with Amnesty International Papang Hidayat said: ‘Showing consensual affection should not be criminalised.’

Brexit meltdown Limited edition Brexit 50p coins, dated October 31, 2019, have been shredded and melted down after the UK’s departure from the EU was delayed. The special coins were originally designed to be minted in time for Britain leaving the trading bloc on October 31, but the Treasury has confirmed these coins will now be recycled. A HM Treasury spokesman said: ‘We will still produce a coin to mark our departure from the European Union, and this will enter circulation after we have left.’ According to the Royal Mint website, precious metals such as 50p coins are sorted and shredded before being melted down. They are then purified and solidified before being turned into new products. The cost of designing and producing the commemorative coins will be met by the Royal Mint out of its own revenues at no cost to the taxpayer.

WWW.MYKRING.COM/SPAIN - COMING SOON TO SPAIN How would you like to step straight out of the pool and buy your cocktail without having to dig out your wallet or purse? Well, you’ll soon be able to, thanks to K Wearables, the British company behind K Ring, the world’s first contactless payment ring. Launched in the UK in 2017, K Ring is the sleek, stylish, lightweight ring which lets you pay with a tap of your hand. Made in the UK from zirconia technical ceramic and hypoallergenic resin, K Ring is scratch resistant (wear it on the beach!), waterproof (wear it in the sea!), never needs charging and doesn’t need to be paired with your phone… it just works – all by itself. K Ring is powered by Mastercard® and welcomed anywhere in the world accepting contactless payments – including London’s public transport network and on many UK bus routes. K Wearables Founder, Philip Campbell (pictured centre), says, “Sometimes you just don’t want to be carrying your wallet or purse. And using your phone to make a payment is a clunky experience at best. Our aim was to develop a piece of wearable payments technology that doesn’t look like technology – which we’ve achieved. However, more importantly, the user experience is phenomenally good with K Ring: you just tap your hand on the contactless card reader, and

you’re done… apart from the inevitable conversation you’ll have with the astonished person behind the counter!” K Wearables began its expansion into Europe in January, with Dutch bank, ABN AMRO, offering K Ring directly to its customers. The response was extremely positive, with 80% of ABN AMRO’s pilot customers subsequently preferring to use a wearable over their contactless bank card. Spurred on by their success in the Netherlands, K Wearables is now launching in Spain and Germany, led by Mike Flanagan (pictured left) and Michiel Wiesnekker (pictured right), prior to roll-out across further European territories. Mike Flanagan, ex-pat and Head of Sales for Spain, says, “I’ve been testing K Ring in Spain for a while now, and the reception has been incredible. Everybody’s blown away at how easy it is to make a payment, and it looks like K Ring’s not only going to be big within the ex-pat community, but throughout the rest of Spain, too.” K Ring will be launching in Spain in early 2020. nicarao and agua. Nicarao Indians were the first Indian tribes to occupy Lake Nicaragua, and the word agua means water in Spanish. Nicaragua is known as the “Country of Lakes and volcanoes”. It has 21 volcanoes and two of the largest freshwater lakes in Central America, Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua. Lake Nicaragua is the only lake in the world to contain fresh-water sharks. Spain ruled the country from the 16th century through the 19th century. Nicaragua has 78 protected areas that cover 22,422 square kilometres (8,657 square miles), about 17.3% of the nation’s landmass. Nicaragua is home to many exotic animals including toucans, boa constrictors, wild boars, monkeys, jaguars, cougars, and sloths.

Interesting Facts... Nicaragua, officially the Republic of Nicaragua, is the largest country in the Central American isthmus.

Even though their nominal GDP is high, over 75% of the country's people live on less than $2 per day, and 48% of the citizens live under the poverty line.

The name Nicaragua comes from the words

There are no street names in Nicaragua.

Political Shifts Trigger 2 Cent Swings in GBP/EUR Staying up to date with the latest currency news can help you time your transfers effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks…

As global trade tensions persist and underlying signs point towards continued weakness within the Eurozone’s powerhouse economy investors struggled to find incentive to favour the single currency.

Latest currency news The pound came under renewed pressure at the start of November thanks to an unexpectedly dovish shift revealed in the Bank of England’s (BoE) meeting minutes. Even so, this was not enough to prevent the GBP/EUR exchange rate climbing to its best level since May, hitting €1.17.

What do you need to look out for? The latest twists and turns in the run-up to the UK general election look set to limit the pound’s potential for gains, particularly if the polls show a tighter race.

While trade tensions between the US and China failed to ease the GBP/USD exchange rate also experienced a solid improvement, reaching a high of $1.29 as the appeal of the US dollar weakened.

As long as the risk of a hung parliament remains this could keep the GBP/EUR exchange rate on a generally softer footing. Unless the Eurozone economy can demonstrate greater signs of resilience in the coming weeks, the mood towards the euro looks set to sour further.

What’s been happening? The BoE shocked markets with a split vote at its latest policy meeting, with two policymakers unexpectedly voting in favour of an immediate interest rate cut.

With the European Central Bank (ECB) already on a dovish bias another weak month of Eurozone manufacturing and services PMIs could put a significant dampener on EUR exchange rates.

While rates remained on hold this move spooked investors, leaving GBP exchange rates on a generally weaker footing.

At Currencies Direct we’re here to talk currency whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news or how it could impact your currency transfers.

A weaker-than-expected UK consumer price index also put pressure on the pound as inflation dipped further away from the BoE’s 2% target. With the odds of a 2020 interest rate cut continuing to rise GBP exchange rates came under renewed pressure. However, reports that all Conservative candidates standing in the December general election have pledged to support Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal saw the pound rally strongly against its rivals. Although Germany narrowly avoided falling into a state of technical recession in the third quarter, delivering quarterly growth of 0.1%, this was not enough to shore up the euro, meanwhile.

Since 1996 we’ve helped more than 210,000 customers with their currency transfers, just pop into your local Currencies Direct branch or give us a call to find out more. Chrimbo Facts Get your facts right this Christmas! The common abbreviation for Christmas to Xmas is derived from the Greek alphabet. X is letter Chi, which is the first letter of Christ’s name in the Greek alphabet. Oliver Cromwell, in England banned Christmas Carols between 1649 and 1660. Cromwell thought that Christmas should be a very solemn day so he banned carols and parties. The only celebration was by a sermon and a prayer service. In 1643, the British Parliament officially abolished the celebration of Christmas. Silent Night was written in 1818, by an Austrian priest Joseph Mohr. He was told the day before Christmas that the church organ was broken and would not be prepared in

time for Christmas Eve. He was saddened by this and could not think of Christmas without music, so he wanted to write a carol that could be sung by a choir to guitar music. He sat down and wrote three stanzas. Later that night the people in the little Austrian Church sang, “Stille Nacht” for the first time. 26th December was traditionally known as St. Stephen’s Day, but it is more commonly known as ‘Boxing Day’. This expression came about because money was collected in alms-boxes placed in churches during the festive season. This money was then distributed to the poor and needy after Christmas. In 1834, Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert brought the first Christmas tree to Windsor Castle for the Royal family.

A Thought For The Homeless Having fed and clothed the Homeless of Charing Cross for the past two years, this year Linda and Geoff from Second Time Around in Puente don Manuel intend to supply them all with an insulated cup, and vouchers to enable them to get hot drinks from Pret A Manger, who very kindly fill the cups for just 50p. Linda was informed by the homeless that they receive endless supplies of food, but what they also need — especially when it’s cold — is a hot drink. “If we exceed our target on our ‘Go Fund Me’ page we are also going to buy pop-up tents so the homeless can stay dry and warm,” says Linda. If anyone is interested in making a donation for the homeless this Christmas, the Go Fund Me site is: gf.me/u/v2kvkk Making a donation is very straightforward and any donation, large or small, will be extremely helpful. Linda and Geoff will be very grateful. Each Christmas Eve, Linda and Geoff have gone armed with clothes, blankets, trainers, food etc. This year, they are also hoping to give everyone a £5 voucher to enable them to get 10 hot drinks when they are cold. Linda is hoping to raise £1,000 for this cause — if she raises more she will purchase the tents too. If you would like to donate to help the homeless this Christmas, visit: gf.me/u/v2kvkk Linda and Geoff thank you in advance for your donation For any questions call Linda on: 659 37 56 03

De Cotta Law Andalucia Property – Urgent changes to system of licensing of property – The AFO The new law of 3/2019 for Urgent Environmental and territorial measures for irregular building in Andalucia has repealed the law of 6/2012 and the Decree of 2/2012. The previous law was widely criticised in rural areas where old buildings dating back to the 1970s and 1980s were judged on the same criteria as luxury villas built illegally by river beds or on protected land. The law will make it easier to obtain a decision on their status from the municipality and an AFO – afuera de ordenación. The AFO confirms that although the property is “outside the planning rules” it is registered as complying with the new law. There are less strict requirements and the time period for resolution of the matter will be six months from the date of application. If an AFO has been applied for under the old rules a new application can be made using the new less stringent rules. If the municipality does not respond within six months the AFO is not granted. A uniquely Spanish concept of “silencio administrative negativo”. The new rules apply whether the land is urban, urbanizable or non-urban. However certain constructions, as now, will be excluded. For example, buildings on flood plains, on protected land or at high risk of land slips. The law will also allow the municipality to bring in Special Planning for the installation of mains drainage, sewage and water supply or other basic services. Previously the municipality had to await changes to the PGOU which was the regional plan. Now, where it is essential for basic services, the Town Hall can continue with a project with property owners contributing to the cost. Buildings constructed prior to 1975 on any type of land that would have become immune to legal action through passage of time under the laws in place in 1990 will be legitimised AUTOMATICALLY and classified as having an urban licence and the owner can attend the Town Hall to obtain the licence. However, this does not extend to works carried out on those buildings subsequent to that date. For more information telephone us on 952 527 014 or email info@decottalaw.net See main advert opposite

& t i Fru Factsrrants Veg ckcu Bla

Blackcurrant is widely used as a herbal medicine (for former UK residents of a ‘certain age’, think Ribena!) but almost every part of the fruit — including the leaves, seed oil and berry — can be used as medicine. Nutrients include vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, flavonoids, Omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fibre. Eating blackcurrant on a regular and moderate basis helps keep our heart healthy, reducing the risk of cardiovascular problems, mainly due to the presence of the flavonoids in them. The antioxidants — vitamin C, beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin prevent the inner walls of our arteries from oxidative damage, and also reduce the risk of development of cancer. These compounds fight with the free radicals of our body, stabilising them and thus preventing them from causing oxidative damage to our body cells. Blackcurrants are also beneficial in reducing the risk of high blood pressure or hypertension because of the presence of potassium. This is a natural vasodilator which relaxes our blood vessels and ensures the smooth flow of blood. The Omega-3 fatty acids help regulate cholesterol levels, lowering the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol level and at the same time, boosting ‘good’ (HDL) cholesterol. LDL cholesterol gets deposited within the arteries and blood vessels and blocks them, thus increasing the risk of various cardiovascular problems. One cup of blackcurrant provides around 338 per cent of our daily vitamin C requirements. It is also good for our brain health, as the presence of iron and antioxidants also sharpens our memory and boosts the oxygen supply to our brain. This in turn helps minimise the risk of various

neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. Eating blackcurrant on a regular basis is also beneficial for reducing the risk of anaemia and providing relief from it. The iron content helps in the formation of red blood cells and ensures oxygenated blood reaches every part of our body. Blackcurrant is anti-inflammatory in nature and this provides relief from diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, gout etc. It is also a good source of gamma-linolenic acid ( GLA) which helps ease inflammation in our body — for example joint pain, stiffness and soreness of joints. Diabetes sufferers can also benefit. Because the blackcurrant has a low GI (glycaemic index), it releases sugar into the bloodstream at a slow pace, helping to control the ailment. Blackcurrant also helps keep our digestive system healthy, due to its dietary fibre which regulates bowel movement and provides relief from constipation. A 2013 study found that extracts obtained from blackcurrant leaves could defend against the influenza A virus, as it prevents its propagation during its initial stages. Regular consumption of blackcurrant not only improves the strength of our bones, but also reduces the risk of osteoporosis (a condition in which the bones get extremely weak and fragile, and are at a higher risk of fracture).

Buon Gusto Pizza And Pasta Restaurant ‘Buon Gusto’ literally translates from Italian to English as ‘Good Taste’ or to Spanish as ‘Buen Gusto’, and this is exactly what ‘Buon Gusto’ serve: pizza and pasta with ‘great taste’ but at an unforgettable price!

For an amazing 3.95€ during ‘Happy Hour’ (12:30 - 14.30 and 19:00 - 21:00) and with presentation of the voucher on the advert opposite, you can enjoy a selection of pizza and pasta dishes from the ‘Happy Hour’ menu in one of the owners’ restaurants in Torre del Mar or in Rincon de la Victoria. Owners Daniela and Antonio have extensive experience, having served delicious Italian food for more than 15 years in the Axarquia area, and one chilly, windy night recently I popped into Torre del Mar to sample some of their wonderful food. We were welcomed by smiling staff who seated us inside at a very nicely laid-out table and offered us drinks and a wine menu. On this occasion I ordered from the main menu as December is the restaurant’s first month of the ‘Happy Hour’ offer, so wasn’t yet available. I will just have to go back and try that another time!

The main menu is fairly extensive, with a selection of typical Italian starters including garlic bread and wonderful salads, caprese (tomatoes with mozzerella, black olives and basil drizzled with olive oil) and ensalada Tropical as seen in the photos below. I ordered the focaccia with mozzerella, a lovely large round bread with gooey cheese on top — so tasty. What I like about eating at Buon Gusto is that when ordering your pasta dish, you can select your sauce and which type of pasta, be it spaghetti, tagliatelle, fusilli, penne etc. Therefore you get a personalised dish which is cooked freshly every time. I ordered the pasta, tagliatelle Mare Monte, a deliciously saucy dish with good-sized prawns, mushrooms and a hint of cream, topped with parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of black pepper.. two words.. que rica! I had a lovely meal and I am looking forward to returning during the ‘Happy Hours’ to try the ‘Happy Hour’ menu, armed with my voucher, and don’t forget to receive the offer you must present the voucher opposite in both restaurants when ordering. s Fact s

ss s seles e l e Us istma s they ariengu ! Chr As alwaybut amaz We've been decorating Christmas trees for about 500 years. Christmas trees are farmed in 47 states. The Trafalgar Square tree comes from Oslo. Christmas trees take nearly a decade to grow. The largest artificial Christmas tree was in Sri Lanka.

Christmas trees cause 200 fires every year. 1066 – King William I of England was crowned on Christmas Day. Each year, approximately ten million Christmas turkeys are eaten in the U.K. and 22 million in the United States. One can eat more than 7,000 calories at Christmas when you add up the turkey, dressing, mashed and sweet potatoes, other sides, pie, rolls, drinks etc...

Leaving food for Santa originated with Norse children, who left food out for Odin’s eight-legged horse Sleipnir. Dutch children left food in their wooden shoes for St. Nicholas’ horse, although historically there is no mention of St. Nick having a horse. Now, American children leave cookies and milk for Santa. Other children around the world leave hay, carrots, and milk Santa’s reindeer and a glass of Whisky for Santa. Brenda Lee was only thirteen years old when she recorded “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in 1958. The song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” originally was sung by servants to demand alcoholic drinks from their masters. “We won’t go until we get some, so bring some out here.” Many people abbreviate Christmas “Xmas,” which is actually based upon X being the first letter of Jesus Christ’s name in Greek. About $1,000 is spent on Christmas gifts each year by the average American family. Spain’s Christmas lottery, the biggest in the world, has been held without interruption since 1812. In fact, even during the country’s civil war from 1936 to 1939, the ‘Fat One’ (El Gordo in Spanish) still kept its grip on Spaniards. The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed. Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver. If you gave all the gifts listed in the Twelve Days of Christmas, it would equal 364 gifts.

A-Z Of Spain Following on from The Sentinella’s journey through the alphabet to discover the joys of Spain. This month we bring you the letter T. Tarde - This is the word for late and it is said that it’s one of the most frrequent words used in Spain. We wonder why...?! Tuna - This is a student music group made up of university students or former students who dress up in costumes from the “Edad de Oro” - the Spanish Golden Age. These musical troupes wander through town playing guitars, flutes and tambourines and serenading young women in the halls of residence. Sometimes they make sudden and unexpected appearances at weddings or parties, singing traditional songs for a donation.

when sipped in the hot summer months. Roll on May when I will be joining the Tinto de Verano sipping masses. Tapas - Tapas are essentially snacks. The word means, ‘cover’ and stems from the tradition of placing a kind of lid - perhaps bread or a flat piece of card - on top of the drink to protect it from flies. At some point it became the done thing to top this cover with a snack of some kind. It’s common for bars to have six to eight different types of tapas in trays. More often than not seafood sits among the varieties, along with olives, pork in tomato sauce and some kind of pepper dish. Each tapas varies in size, but it is very easy to make a meal of them by ordering larger portions, called raciones.

Tinto de Verano - This taste-bud tingling tipple is made up of red wine and either fanta lemon or soda water. Many Spanish bars have Tinto de Verano on tap. It translates as “summer wine” and it’s especially refreshing

Christmas Funnies Santa went down the Chimney and started putting presents under the tree. He went to leave and noticed the most beautiful red headed women laying there in her naughty nighties, She said “Santa do you wanna stay and play?” He said “HO HO HO gotta go, gotta go, gotta deliver presents to the kids HO HO HO.” So he went to leave again and she said once more, "Santa dont you want to stay and play?" as she took off her nighties and was layin there in a sexy g-string. He said “HO HO HO gotta go, gotta go, gotta deliver presents to the kids dont you know HO HO HO.” So he went to leave one last time and the women said again, "Santa stay and play" and when he turned around she was laying there completely naked, the most beautiful thing in the world. He said “HEY HEY HEY gotta stay, gotta stay, can’t go up the chimney with my pecker this way!” ------------------------------------------------------------A family is sitting at the dining table getting ready for a holiday feast and the son asks if

he can ask a question. Dad answers: "Yes, of course, just ask!" The young man asks his dad, "Dad, how many varieties of breasts are there?" His father is a little surprised, but answers: "Yes, my son, there are three varieties of breasts. At 20, the woman has breasts that are like melons, round and firm. At 30 to 40, the breasts are still like pears but hanging a little, after 50, the breasts are like onions." "Onions?" asks the young man. "Yes, if you see them, they make you cry!" This misogynistic display has the mother and daughter seeing red. So that the daughter asks: "May I ask a personal question, Mum, how many types of penises are there?" Her Mum is a little surprised, but then she looks at her husband and answers: "Yes, my daughter, a man goes through three stages: At age 20, the penis is like an oak, stately and hard. At 30 to 40 years, the penis is like a birch, flexible but reliable, after 50 years the penis will look like a Christmas tree." "Christmas tree?" "Yes, dead from the root and the balls hang there just for decoration."

s Now aprio b e l Ce en & rdo DiC ThLeona Few actors in the world have had a career quite as diverse as that of Leonard DiCaprio, who has gone from humble beginnings as a supporting cast member in sitcoms and low-budget horror movies to being a major teenage heartthrob in the 1990s and peaking as leading man in a number of Hollywood blockbusters. Known to his friends as Leo, he was born on November 11, 1974, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, with the birth name of Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio. His performance skills became obvious to his parents early on, and after signing him up with a talent agent who wanted Leo to perform under the stage name "Lenny Williams", he began appearing on a number of television commercials and educational programs. One of his first TV appearances was in "Romper Room", but he got himself ejected from the set for being disruptive. He soon began attracting the attention of producers, who cast him in small roles in a number of television series such as Roseanne (1988) and The New Lassie (1989), and his film debut came in 1991 with Critters 3. This attracted the attention of the people behind the hit TV sitcom Growing Pains (1985), in which Leo was cast as a young homeless boy. Although his stint on the series was short — it was axed the following year — he gained confidence and began auditioning for roles in which he would get the chance to prove his acting skills. He became a household name after appearing as Romeo Montague in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996) and his next starring role — in the box office

record-holding Titanic — cemented his status as a major star. He kept a low profile for a few years, but burst back onto the scene in 2002 with leading roles in Catch Me If You Can (2002) and Gangs of New York (2002), his first of many collaborations with director Martin Scorsese. With a current salary of $40 million a film, Leo is now one of the biggest movie stars in the world. In 2009, Leo, along with Kate Winslet and director James Cameron, publicly pledged to support the financial future of the last living Titanic survivor, Millvina Dean, after it was reported that she had been forced to sell her mementos to pay for nursing home bills. He is also a committed environmentalist, and is actively involved in many environmental causes; in 2010, he donated $1,000,000 to earthquake relief efforts and $1,000,000 to the Wildlife Conservation Society. His passion also led to his involvement in The 11th Hour, a documentary movie about the state of the natural environment. He only uses his media presence for environmental or human rights causes, and he and his family funded a state-of-the-art computer centre at the Los Feliz branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, which was rebuilt after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

Poorly Emma voted off Strictly Come Dancing contestant Viscountess Emma Weymouth has revealed she was performing with a broken foot, a pulled muscle and an upset stomach on the night of her exit. The socialite, 33, got the boot in a controversial exit, with many fans claiming BBC presenter Mike Bushell should have gone home instead. During an interview with the Daily Mail, the former contestant said: "There's no time to recover. A bone in my foot dropped out of place from the jive and that was agony." The Viscountess also confessed to pulling a "rib muscle" while dancing the samba, and added she struggling with symptoms of an upset stomach too. "I couldn't eat all day before what turned out to be our last dance but, obviously, you have to go and perform," she said. This year's series of Strictly has been marred by horror falls, injuries and sicknesses which have affected the celebrity line-up and judges, as well as the professional dancers.

Whitney’s secret lesbian lover Whitney Houston's secret lesbian lover Robyn Crawford has described how she watched in horror as the superstar singer married Bobby Brown. Whitney and Robyn were long rumoured to have been more than just friends, and the star's former assistant recently confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in Hollywood. The fitness trainer, 58, has now said she felt Whitney "slipping away" from her as the superstar started to date men including Jermaine Jackson, Eddie Murphy and Bobby Brown. Whitney's former assistant claimed she had a physical relationship with the superstar until Whitney broke it off amid fears it could damage her career. To make matters worse, Robyn was chosen as maid of honour at the ceremony in 1992. In a new memoir called A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston, Robyn wrote: "I could live without being romantically involved, but I had trouble facing the walls that were going up." Whitney died age 48 after drowning in a bath at the Beverly Hilton hotel, having ingested a cocktail of cocaine, cannabis and prescription drugs.

Tackling Inflammation causing you to feel palpitations. On the subject of anti-inflammatories I do see a lot of clients who have been told by their doctor that they may never take NSAIs due to possible inter-reactions with tablets they are taking already, or because of heart, stomach or other ailments they suffer. In this instance, they are forced to suffer pain or seek other, alternative, anti-inflammatory treatments. With that I suggest ultrasound. The effect of ultrasound via an increase in local blood flow can be used to help reduce local swelling and chronic inflammation. Ultrasound therapy is a treatment used by physical therapists or occupational therapists to treat pain conditions and promote tissue healing. By Amanda Edge, BscHonsRSA See main advert below

Last week a client came to me in agony with an inflamed nerve in her back. She had been to see the doctor but, as her blood pressure was so high, the doctor refused to give her any non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIs). The lady couldn´t understand why her blood pressure — that had been low and controlled all summer — had suddenly increased in October. As she has a history of blood pressure problems, she looked back in her records and discovered that her blood pressure had increased at a similar time the previous year. The one common factor was the season change and I suggested it could be due to reducing water intake. In the summer we are diligent, but when it cools down, we tend to forget to drink enough water. After researching more I did find there is indeed a link between dehydration and high blood pressure. It has been proven that dehydration causes strain on your heart. The amount of blood circulating through your body, or blood volume, decreases when you are dehydrated. To compensate, your heart beats faster, increasing your heart rate and

Owning A Property In Spain Is Not All About Making A Profit Recently, some of my vendors have been very lucky – they have sold their properties for a small profit! This is good news, it is always good to recuperate one’s investment, especially in difficult times, still with so many uncertainties. However, many property owners who have approached me wishing to sell their properties, are expecting unrealistic prices. The problem is that those that purchased during the ‘boom’ period, between 2004 and 2008 bought for high prices, difficult to match today. One of our biggest problems at the moment is trying to reduce the gap between what the vendors wish to sell their properties for, and what the buyers are willing to spend. Many buyers these days prefer to keep a property in their countries of origin, which means that their budget for a second property, in Spain, is less than it used to be. Having lived here myself since 2002, bringing

up my children here with my husband, renovating an old schoolhouse in the countryside and starting two businesses, I truly believe that it’s not all about making a profit. It is about enjoyment and life experience. We enjoy, without doubt, the best climate in Europe, in a stable environment, and a country rich in culture with people who really know how to party – this is the profit that we make, from the privilege of being in this amazing part of the world. For those considering putting their houses on the market in 2020, I would say, look carefully at the values of similar houses to your own on the market, and choose a price that is reasonably within what the market will accept. And never forget the magical moments that most of you have enjoyed over your years in Spain. By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advertisement below)

From Couch To London 2020 In recent years the popularity of running has grown rapidly worldwide. Arguably this is due to its physical and mental health benefits. Many people who actively take up running for the first time often have an aim that has become known as couch to 5k. In other words, to be able to progress from not running at all to being able to successfully run 5 kilometres.

at the event at Sunset Beach Hotel in Benalmadena. Local businesses have donated raffle prizes for the evening. Tickets are 10â‚Ź per person and 100% of this will be donated to Whizz Kidz. Tickets are available online or by contacting one of us in person. People also have the option to purchase a 'virtual ticket' if they are not able to attend so they can still support the charity. '

However, for three local runners their aims were set a little higher. Rebecca, Kerry and Andy are all relatively new to running and have taken on the challenge to complete the London Marathon in 2020. The marathon has become one of the UK's largest annual fundraising events. Rebecca, Kerry and Andy are supporting the Whizz Kidz charity which provide support to disabled children.

The threesome have also received fantastic support from local businesses who have sponsored their training shirts. Company logos have been printed onto the shirts that are worn at local racing events. In return the companies are using photo images in their social media advertising.

Kerry explains that: 'Whizz Kidz do amazing work helping disabled children and I am very proud to be part of their team for London 2020. Fundraising has proved challenging so the three of us have had to be quite imaginative in our activities. Our main event is an exciting evening of entertainment on 13th December. Singers, dancers and DJ's have given their services for free to perform

Any support for the gala event or the Whizz Kidz fundraising effort would be greatly appreciated. Please see the advert below with more details about the event. Fancy starting running? Why not join a friendly social group of people every Saturday morning for a 5km route. Start at 9.00am, chiringuito Estrella, Torre del Mar (close to lighthouse) followed by breakfast.

Chrimbo Tips The Sentinella’s top tips to make your

in their mashed potatoes.

1. If something is served with gravy as an accompaniment, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat. Burp. Repeat.

3. Never snack before going to a party! The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other peoples food and lots of it. It’s a scientific fact that food tastes better when someone else has paid for it and cooked it, too.

Christmas a merry one!

4. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New year’s Day. There’s plenty of time for long restorative naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that jug of eggnog. 2. Speaking of mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skimmed milk or whole milk. If it’s skimmed milk pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. Your host should be nominated for sainthood if they use cream or sour cream

5. One last tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Now get back in there and party ‘til you’re green! So there you have it - follow the above and have yourself a very Merry Christmas :)

¡Feliz Navidad! Whilst sunshine and Christmas might take a bit of getting used to and a palm tree isn’t the easiest thing to hang your baubles on, Christmas is nearly here. In the heat, demolishing a full Christmas roast seems excessive but there are some traditions that it’s hard to do without. Hence, why the ex-pats like to take a day trip to Morrison’s in Gib or the Iceland/Waitrose of Fuengi and for cheap decs our choice is endless. Just look for the windows filled with garnish colours. Then there are the traditions of our host nation to supplement our own. And some of their traditions are rather unique. Here’s a few to entertain you. 1. Fish and royalty Christmas Eve is the big night that starts nearly 3 weeks of celebration. Families gather together to eat a fish supper. As our Queen Elizabeth has settled down for the night in her flannelette PJs and a nightcap of gin and Dubonnet, King Felipe will be just warming up to give his address to the nation, live at 9pm. Unsurprisingly, Spain’s King gives the latest speech in Europe. 2. Caganer Many homes and shops have a nativity scene as their central focus. The scene in the stable in Bethlehem is beautifully crafted with one unusual addition. Hidden in the background of the tableaux is a squatting figure. Look closer and you’ll observe the figure is relieving itself with a beautifully Mr Whippy shaped poo. The Caganer is a strange addition to the birth of Christ but it’s definitely a tradition. Children will pin their faces to the shop front window to spot the crapping figure which is apparently seen as lucky. 3. Take a chance No Christmas would be complete in Spain without El Gordo, the fat one. This doesn’t refer to over indulging with chocolate and booze. El Gordo is the biggest lottery in the world. Workplace syndicates are formed to cover the 200€ individual ticket cost. Small ticket shares are offered so it’s not

uncommon to buy a 20% stake. On December 22nd, the streets of Spain fall unnaturally silent for the 3 hours of ball drawing. Numbers are revealed by being sung by a children’s choir. With the winning ticket paying out 4 million euros, it certainly might be worth taking a chance on El Gordo. 4. Back to the 1970s Whether you decide to visit Father Christmas in a department store or watch him paraded at the Three Kings processions, you might wonder if you’ve time travelled back to a very un PC 1975. There by his side are not helpful elves and stuffed reindeers but a couple of wise men, blacked up to add authenticity. Yep, that’s right. White men blacked up to look like black men isn’t considered even mildly inappropriate here. You might wonder if it wouldn’t be an excellent seasonal employment opportunity for the men who’ve annoyed you all summer by the beach. But that’s not the Spanish way. 5. Three Kings: don’t forget your brolly! Three Kings on held on the evening of January 5th is a hugely important celebration superseding Christmas Day. In Andalucia it’s a major event. This might explain Pope Benedict XVI’s declaration that the Three Kings actually travelled from Andalucia. Whilst the processions might seem magical and awe inspiring, they can turn out to be a chaotic free for all. Why? Because every float flings boiled sweets at the attentive crowd. Brollies are upturned to catch the confectionary missiles. It’s frenetic and fierce and not for the faint hearted. 6. Gorging on grapes. New Year’s Eve is all about traditions. First footing, whiskey shots and bits of coal have no place in Spain. Instead be prepared to swallow 12 grapes, seedless hopefully, in the 12 chimes leading up to midnight. One glass of Chardonnay doesn’t count it seems. Just hope that your host has some knowledge of the Heimlich manoeuvre. Let’s celebrate! The Christmas season in Spain needs stamina as it stretches from December 24 until the return to work on January 7th. Remember to check out the adverts in The Sentinella for the best tips on how to enjoy it. Article written by Grimble

Gin: Flavours Of Agnes Arber At 69 years of age, on the 24th May 1948, Agnes Arber became the first woman to be awarded with the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London, a world-famous institution dedicated to the study of natural history, recognising her outstanding contributions to botanical science. The Linnean Gold Medal is the highest honour and only awarded in recognition for ‘outstanding’ service to the Society. Agnes published numerous books on botany and philosophy, too.

Rhubarb Premium Gin pairs extremely well with Ginger Ale, plus garnishing with a slice of orange, if so desired.

Signature Brands has created the Agnes Arber gins, in recognition and admiration of the first lady of botany. Agnes Arber Premium Gin is pot-stilled at the distillery from nine botanicals, plus premium grain spirit. The botanicals utilised are Angelica, Cassia, Coriander, Grapefruit, Iris, Juniper, Lemon, Liquorice and Orange. I consider this to be a perfect balance and (if it possible) even more perfect by adding a slice of pink grapefruit to the finished drink.

Other high-quality productions, from Signature Brands, are very much worthwhile locating and trying, too. Spirits, including Old J Spiced Rum and Moonshine Vodka are very popular. Further impressive beverages include beers and cider, which have regular ‘devotees’, also.

Following on, from the original concept, a further production was created, to include another flavour and more colour, to an already winning formula. The gin was infused with rhubarb, adding a luscious tartness. Agnes Arber

The productions are very well presented and are fabulous for cabinet displays, likely taking ‘Pride of Place’, in any collection. Great gins on their own or adding tonic (if such is a preference), these will not disappoint, with a softness on the mouthfeel, which follows through to the memorable palate sensation, superbly.

Having a splendid range of drinks, with great presentations, take time and pleasure to locate your favourites, from this well-established company. Excellent advice and also recommendations for food pairings are always available from their very experienced team. E-mail: info@signature-brands.co.uk www.signature-brands.co.uk

As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

) : a h a Jokes h At the National Art Gallery in Dublin, a husband and wife were staring at a portrait that had them completely confused. The painting depicted three black men totally naked sitting on a park bench. Two of the figures had black willies, but the one in the middle had a pink willie. The curator of the gallery realised that they were having trouble interpreting the painting and offered his assessment. He went on for over half an hour explaining how it depicted the sexual emasculation of black men in a predominately white, patriarchal society. 'In fact,' he pointed out, 'some serious critics believe that the pink willie also reflects the cultural and sociological oppression experienced by gay men in contemporary society.' After the curator left, an Irishman, approached the couple and said, 'Would you like to know what the painting is really about?' 'Now why would you claim to be more of an expert than the curator of the gallery?' asked the couple. 'Because I'm the guy who painted it,' he replied. 'In fact, there are no black men depicted at all! They're just three Irish coal miners. The guy in the middle went home for lunch.' ------------------------------------------------------------On Christmas Eve, a long time ago, Santa Claus was getting ready for his annual journey. But this year there were many problems. Four of the elder elves became ill and the younger more in-experienced elves did not produce the toys as quickly, so Santa started to worry that he would not be ready in time. Then Mrs. Claus tells him that her mother is visiting. This makes Santa Claus stressed even more so. When he begins to gather the reindeer for his sleigh, he discovers that three of them are ready to give birth and two have jumped over the fence.

The elves begin loading the sleigh and one of the boards of the sled breaks off and the bag of toys falls to the ground dispersing the toys all around. It goes without saying that Santa was not exactly in his best state of mind and slightly triggered. Then the doorbell rings and Santa goes to the door and expects another problem. He opens the door and there is a little angel with a big Christmas tree brought to cheer up Santa. The angel says in a loving tone: "Merry Christmas Santa, is it not a beautiful day today? I have a big beautiful tree for you, is it not a beautiful tree, where do you want me to put it?" And so began the tradition of the angel on top of the Christmas tree. ------------------------------------------------------------It is late December and the court judge is in a good mood. He asks the defendant: "What are you accused of?" The defendant replies "I am accused of having done my Christmas shopping too early!" The judges says "But that's not a crime." "Well, it was before the store opened! ------------------------------------------------------------A male elf was so paranoid about the size of his willy that he could never work up the courage to have sex. Then one day he fell in love with a elf nurse. One fine evening, they went back to her place. She put on some soft music and led him into the bedroom. Totally mortified, he told her of his problem. "Don't worry," She said. "I'm a nurse. I won't laugh." Blushing the man drops his trousers. "It's OK," she said. "I've seen lots smaller than that." "Really?" the relieved elf asked. She nodded. "Yes," she chuckled, "I used to work in the maternity unit."

Jokes h a ha :) Kneeling in front of the fireplace, a boy exclaimed: "Dear Santa, I WANT A NINTENDO SWITCH!" After a slight silence: "Dear Santa, I WANT A NINTENDO SWITCH!" And again: "Dear Santa, I WANT A NINTENDO SWITCH!" At this moment, his father intervened: "It's not worth shouting like this: Santa Claus is not deaf!" And the kid replied: "Santa is perhaps not deaf ... but grandmother is!" ------------------------------------------------------------Mason says to his mother: “You can delete the train set from my Christmas wish list.“ Mother: “Why is that?” Mason: “Yesterday, I found one in the closet.” ------------------------------------------------------------A woman, shortly before Christmas, told her husband that she would like something able to go from 0 to 100 in more or less 4 seconds ... They feel a slight precipitation. "I think it's raining." says the man. "No, it's snowing." replies the woman. "How about we ask this communist officer here? He is always right!" exclaims the man, "Officer Rudolph, is it raining or snowing?" "Definitely raining." Officer Rudolph replies before walking off. The man turns to his wife with a smile. "See? Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear." ------------------------------------------------------------Did you hear about the time Scrooge pretended to be Santa Claus? He slid down chimneys and asked "Who wants to buy a toy?" ------------------------------------------------------------An Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman were invited to a Christmas party. The Englishman brought a bag of tinsel, the Scotsman brought a bag of holly and they asked the Irishman: "What have you brought?" He said: "I brought a pair of knickers." They asked: "What has that got to do with Christmas?" He said "They're Carol's”.

s e p o c s o Hor by Juanita Banana of www.AbsoluteAxarquia.com ARIES: March 21-April 20 Previously concealed aspects within your major relationship now come to light, determining your future, as ambitions are clarified and intensified, permanently transforming and impacting your life. A good time to apply for a loan or grant. TAURUS: April 21-May 21 Carrying the banner of peace, you consistently and effortlessly, almost miraculously, sooth away conflict particularly between those you care for. Affection surrounds you as something new to love enters your life. GEMINI: May 22-June 21 Work and health are well aspected for Gemini. That said, during the next few months there’s need for a compromise, even a bit of a sacrifice, on your part in order that another’s needs can be met. CANCER: June 22-July 22 It seems a long time since you had real fun so it’s time for some amusement and to create an equitable frame of self-reference. Spend time with children, seek creative outlets and do not surrender your identity any longer. LEO: July 23-August 23 Apply your easy and quick intelligence to inject and illustrate much needed harmony to those whose lives you touch this month. A good time to implement a Human Relations project you may have been mulling over. VIRGO: August 24-September 22 Just about everything you do and wish to achieve is positively influenced during December. You don’t need assistance, or even support, of any kind as all that you do will be successful and bring happiness.

LIBRA: September 23 - October 22 Be careful not to attract people and material possessions in large amounts this month or you’ll be overwhelmed and probably see your finances wither away. You’ll also need to resist the temptation to lavish yourself with expensive objects as is sometimes your wont. SCORPIO: October 23 - November 21 What a change for Scorpio as warmth suffuses your being and you project an air of social agreeableness! Disagreements are put behind as friendships are acknowledged and enjoyed. You would benefit from taking or planning a holiday. SAGITTARIUS: November 22 December 21 Matters psychological and unresolved come to the forefront and, without seeking gratification, you consider tending to the underprivileged, the poor and those who may be ill. Your prize will be spiritual and rewarding. CAPRICORN: December 22 - January 20 Issues with finances, other resources and even personal values arise. Taking time to review these at this time will reap extraordinary rewards. If you need help, seek someone with genuine compassion capable of listening. AQUARIUS: January 21 - February 19 Your capabilities abound and are recognised by everyone, both professionally and personally. Your artistic side will flourish this month – consider design, layout, redecorating of any type. Someone older touches your life with potential for you to learn from. PISCES: February 20 - March 20 You are to be challenged, entertained and experience an expansion of consciousness during the holiday season. You need music and attractive surroundings as your thoughts broaden and your insight deepens.
