If you’re looking for somewhere to spend the day with your family this summer then I’d recommend the La Concepcion Botanical Gardens, close to Malaga City. I spent some time there recently with Kami, Tony and family, who many of you will know from their roles running this magazine. If you’re a tree fan you’ll be in your element, but those who prefer flowers may feel slightly disappointed, as trees definitely rule the roost! There’s even a special section called ‘Around The World in 80 Trees’ featuring 80 trees from across the globe. If you actually stop at each tree and study it, then you can see how they look different from ordinary trees. I was certainly in my element at the gardens, mainly because of the abundance of frogs. I make no secret of the fact that I simply ADORE frogs. Not in the way that I’d like to plant wet ones on their cheeks (although if they turned into handsome princes I might consider it….), but simply to watch them be. They jump around from lily pad to pond without a care in the world…what a life hey?! The froggys were also the highlight of the day for my two nieces, Charli and Leoni. They loved playing ‘spot the frog’ then throwing small twigs their way to scare them into jumping (teehee!) Our little clan involved five adults, two children, a buggy and a wheelchair. This meant we could only stick to certain areas and we couldn’t go gallivanting beyond the trees, or up steep hills. But the children had great fun riding on the back of the wheelchair while Daddy pushed them along, and the buggy proved a great storage system for heavy bags. We visited the gardens on an especially hot day so the sprinkler water system proved a real treat

Strange News Fan puts his house on England A football fan from Bristol has gone further than most to show his support for England's World Cup bid. Lee Bray, 34, of Knowle West, decided that replica shirts and car flags just weren't enough. So he commissioned two graffiti artists, Stae and Cheo, to cover the front of his house in a giant World Cup mural. He said: "People are coming from all over Bristol to take photos of the house. I really believe England can go all the way and win in South Africa." Condiment vandal, 74, arrested A 74-year-old woman has been arrested by US police in their search for a vandal who has been pouring condiments into a drop box at a local library. Police say Joy Cassidy is suspected of causing thousands of dollars in damage to library books with liquids including ketchup, corn syrup and mayonnaise. She was caught after allegedly dropping an open jar of mayonnaise into the drop box outside Ada County Library in Boise. Police say 10 similar acts of vandalism have been committed at the library in little more than a year. Heads up! Airport workers who noticed a package was not labelled properly were shocked to discover a shipment of 40 to 60 human heads. Employees at Southwest Airlines discovered the clumsily duct-taped containers of heads in Little Rock, Arkansas. After they reported their grim discovery to police, the heads were turned over to the local coroner. Further investigation revealed the heads were being shipped to be used by neurosurgeons to study ear, nose and throat procedures. The heads were on their way to medical company Medtronic Inc in Fort Worth, Texas, which had ordered them for research.

Linea Directa Who can drive my car? Many drivers often ask themselves who exactly can drive their car if their motor insurance is only in their name. The answer to this question depends on which company you are covered with as not all insurers will cover you if an accident occurs when another person other than the policy holder is driving the car. In fact, many insurance companies only cover those that are stipulated in the policy or “Certificate of Motor Insurance”. Thus, if anyone else is driving your vehicle such as members of your family or even your partner or spouse, both they and you need to be aware that they may not be covered in the event of an accident. De Cotta Long Term Lets by Rob Westwater, Lawyer, De Cotta McKenna y Santafé In the current economic climate and the unfavourable GBP/€ exchange rate, more people are considering renting their Spanish property to generate additional income and to make better use of their Spanish asset. While this may be a sensible option for many, there are a number of important legal issues a prospective landlord must be aware of before committing to a long term let. Overview: In Spain, landlord and tenant law overwhelmingly favours the tenant. For example, a tenant renting a property as his “sole residence” on a 12 month lease has the right to extend the lease for a further four annual periods. Consequently, the 1 year lease can give rise to a right to remain in the property for five years. It should also be noted that the extent of the protections afforded to a tenant will arise on whether or not he satisfies the “sole residence” test and not the length of the lease itself. In addition, eviction proceedings can be slow and expensive. Assuming the landlord has the right to evict a tenant, a period of 12 months or more is not uncommon before the proceedings are dealt with. Potential landlords must also bear in mind that the combination of tenant rights and a slow judicial process for eviction (if applicable) may delay or even prevent a sale to a third party in the future. The rental contract: Always ensure that the rental contract is drawn up by a competent lawyer. The contract will always include the following information: the parties’ details; property details; agreed rent; when rent is to be paid and to whom; amount of deposit; etc. Typically, the deposit is 1-2 months rent and will be held by the landlord. To assure payment of the rent, the landlord should also include a requirement that the tenant obtain an “aval” or bank guarantee. A comprehensive inventory should be attached to the contract and signed by the parties with a specific clause within the contract requiring payment by the tenant for any damage (not including normal wear and tear) to the specified items or allowing the landlord to deduct such payment from the deposit. Due to the “tenant friendly” nature of the law, you

should insist on proper references and follow these up. There are also a number of specific drafting measures which can be taken to help improve the position of landlords. These include reducing the length of the contract, obtaining undertakings from the tenant regarding the length of his intention to stay at the property and confirmation that this is not his sole residence. While the extent and applicability of these and other provisions will differ from case to case, there is no ability to exclude the statutory protections afforded to tenants. Eviction and non-payment of rent: If a tenant refuses to pay the rent, getting them to pay or getting them out can be a costly process. The claim to the court is for payment of outstanding rent and eviction due to the non-payment. However, if the tenant pays all outstanding amounts owed (including costs), then he will have the right to remain in the property with the applicable legal rights and protections. If payment is not made, the court will order his eviction. See main advert below.

Obituary - LORD BENSONS â&#x20AC;&#x153;I havent known Trevor long, perhaps six months or so, since he started advertising in The Sentinella magazine and every month we would go through his advert for the forthcoming month. Now I am no great football fan at all, in fact I have been known to be a total embarrassment when I thought I would take an interest and ask "who is winning, Tottenham or Spurs!?" so you can imagine each month how useless I was going through all the football fixtures that were to be included in the advert with him, it wasnt my greatest subject but hey thanks to Trevor I am a little more clued up on this football lark! Obviously you get to know advertisers a little better each time you see them and Trevor and Karen have always been very welcoming to me and it was with great sadness when I first heard Trevor was in hospital and even more so to discover he had passed away. I feel completely exhausted, with just one hour to go until the magazine deadline. I'm typing away whilst trying to convince myself that impossible deadlines are good for you and help you work better under pressure… sound familiar? Ok, a different scenario maybe, but anyone who has tried to “get on” in life will have experienced similar moments.

There are always going to be ups and downs when trying to run your own business. For me running an arty business is mostly up, so it came as a bit of a shock this morning when I realised the words, “laundering” and “pressing” were being directed at me! Once I had ascertained that the correct translation is indeed, “washing” and “ironing” and that I needed to do it, running my own business lost some of its former luster. Not that we at La Vaqueria are slobs or anything, we had just presumed that these archaic customs had long since been abandoned! So, after making several families of large spider homeless when the correct tools of the trade were located, a wonderful collection of embroidery, crochet and lace was duly pressed and made presentable for viewing at our Summer Craft Day last month. As I got into my stroke I could truly appreciate the time, effort and patience previous generations of women had taken in order to make their homes as presentable as possible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who helped

and supported this event; the council, the visitors, the stall holders, exhibitors and demonstrators. By the way, the spiders have moved back into the ironing board for the summer until October when we have the Autumn Craft Day. Do you remember back ten years ago when none of us had mobile phones? It's hard to imagine now when we are encouraged to believe that we could not possibly manage without one. Well, perhaps we should. It is handy to be able to get hold of the kids, but is this sufficient to subject ourselves to continuous barraging from the phone companies with the latest deal that we shouldn't be without? Lovely people call you up (usually when you have just started tea or put your feet up for a snooze). You can hear their smile over the airwaves as they lull you into a false sense of security, gently prising one little word out of you, and before you know it, you have a phone contract for you said “yes” on a recorded call. And that, my friend, is all it takes. You are then subjected to a verbal grilling as all of your personal details are extracted with speed and precision and before you know it "Gracias, Thank you, Adios, Goodbye." Simple as that, like sharks circling their prey, followed by that fatal strike; predators moving in for the kill, preying on any unsuspecting victim who was daft enough to answer their phone! At La Vaqueria we always have people popping in with papers they don’t understand, which more often than not can be sorted out quite simply. Even more worrying though is the increasing number of visitors who have unwittingly signed up for a phone contract which they are unable to stop. If you find yourself in a similar situation and you are visiting the shop, please feel free to ask for help. We will if we can. This month sees the return of the very popular SUNDAY BRUNCH. He worked in a Hotel in Torremolinos and had been given two free tickets to a magic show. We arranged to meet at Málaga bus station. As the bus pulled in, I scanned the people scattered outside. He had described himself as ‘tall’, apparently that was all I would need to identify him. I could vaguely make out a towering guy through the window. Two months of chatting on messenger and finally we were meeting in

real life. My insides were on fire. “Hello, Keidi?” said the man, with a sexy Spanish accent. “Yes” I said, relieved that the conversation had commenced in English. I hoped it continued that way. “I’m Chema” he said smiling. His face seemed warm and friendly; familiar even. “I’ve parked nearby,” he said, leading me to a silver Ford Focus. The awkwardness I felt as I climbed into the passenger seat vanished after a few minutes. In fact I felt strangely relaxed around this man. He exuded a calm, gentle aura, which I plugged into. It contrasted nicely with my over-active mind and busy nature. I find them a little dry, but they’re nice when dipped in tea, or hot chocolate if you’re feeling really naughty! Mahonesa – This is mayonnaise and I like to dip chips in it, rather than eat them with ketchup or smothered in salt. Be careful with mayonnaise in Spain though – if you leave it sitting in the sun for any length of time it can go off very quickly!

Mantequilla – This is one of the first Spanish words I learnt. I was in a restaurant and wanted some butter to eat with some overly dry bread. I looked it up in my pocket dictionary and voila! Mariscos – This is seafood such as prawns, muscles, clams and the like. I love a good sopa de mariscos as a starter. Miel – Clue: What the bees make…Yeah, honey! A spoonful of high quality locally made honey helps allergy sufferers. Try it and see! Migas de pan – These are breadcrumbs. In many Spanish restaurants you may also see ‘Migas’ on the menu. It’s chorizo and black pudding covered with breadcrumbs and sometimes an additional ingredient or two! Morcilla – Black pudding, or pig’s blood…and totally vile. Someone pass me the sick bucket!

LT Construction I was growing a little bored with my old advert, as I’m sure many of my clients were, so I thought it was time to update it to reflect the changes in our in-house expertise and the market in general. It seemed apparent that many of the General Public were confused as to what a Landscaper does. This isn’t helped by the fact that a lot of jobbing gardeners advertise themselves as ‘Landscapers’. A comment by some people in the past has been, “I didn’t know you did building work”, which left me feeling a little surprised! My house is situated north of the lake at La Viñuela. Most of the houses surrounding mine have been affected this winter by slipped banks, collapsed retaining walls and in the worst case, the whole house moved. The fact that my house and land has not moved is no accident!¡ A ‘Landscape Gardener’ covers many disciplines, starting from a consultation with the client to obtain the basic idea of the project, moving on to the design stage, project management and project completion.

The projects normally start with the hard landscaping. This can cover many different building requirements, from retaining walls, drainage, driveways, terracing, patios, stairs, pergolas, garages and casitas. This stage can often involve electrics as well as pumping for septic tanks, water deposits and irrigation systems. The final stage is the soft landscaping, i.e. planting. There is less of a need for this now, as most of the houses in our area have mature gardens. The benefit of using a true Landscaper over a General Builder is that we come from a design background, as well as having an understanding of how the land is structured. The aesthetics of the house and garden are taken into consideration as well as best practice in regard to building specifications. The emphasis with my business now is more towards construction, as this is the area for which I receive the majority of enquiries. Botanical Gardens Malaga La Concepción 1855-1990 The origins of La Concepción can be traced back to the merging of several estates located to the north of the city of Malaga. These were home to olive and almond trees and possibly vines, though the citrus trees were the most numerous. The gardens’ creators were Jorge Loring Oyarzabal and Amalia Heredia Livermore, who purchased the land on which they stand in about 1855. According to written records at the time, they had originally come up with the idea of a garden seven years earlier while on their honeymoon, which saw them embark upon on a tour of Europe. The Marquis and Marchioness’ comfortable economic situation coupled with their first-hand experience of some of Europe’s finest gardens and their commercial dealings abroad enabled them to cultivate the most exotic of plant species from around the world. In order to ensure that their dream came to fruition, they enlisted the services of a French gardener, Chamousst, who selected and planted the gardens’ flora, an endeavour for which he was awarded a number of prizes, as witnessed by newspaper reports of the late XIX century. La Concepción quickly earned itself a fine reputation throughout Europe, though not for its exuberantly beautiful gardens; the source of this renown was in fact the magnificent collection of archaeological remains on display in the Loring Museum, a small, Doric-style building erected on the site of a Roman mosaic discovered in Cartama depicting the feats of Hercules For many years, the Lorings strove to restore all of the archaeological remains that they encountered. Without doubt, the most significant of these was the Lex Flavia Malacitana, a bronze piece bearing the Roman laws that governed Malaga in the year 80 AD which now resides in the National Archaeology Museum. Following the death of its owners and the family’s economic decline, La Concepción was bought in 1911 by a married couple from Bilbao, the Echevarria-Echevarrietas, who extended the gardens by creating a number of new areas. 1990-2006 In 1990, the entire estate (a total of 49 hectares, taking into account the historical garden plus the surrounding agricultural and forest land) was pur-

chased by Malaga City Council for 600 million pesetas (€3,606,073). In 1991, the “City of Malaga” Municipal Botanical Trust was founded to run and administer the estate. The construction of El Limonero reservoir saw these 49 hectares of land divided into two sections by a road: 26 of these were declared green belt, with the remaining 23 enclosed hectares making up La Concepción Historical-Botanical Gardens. Once the necessary infrastructure and upgrading work had been carried out, it was opened to the public in 1994 with two main aims: the conservation and improvement of the historical garden and the creation on the estate of a botanical garden (a cultural, educational and scientific centre connected with the world of plants with the majority of its species on display in living collections). Historical heritage In addition to its botanical riches, La Concepción boasts an equally significant historical heritage. In the XIX century, La Concepción served as a meeting point for a whole host of illustrious figures of the time. Politicians, artists, aristocrats and the noble Malaga bourgeoisie all frequented its gardens. As a result, a number of distinguished buildings were erected here: the magnificent Stately Home, the cypress house, the administrator’s house, the gardener’s hut and the schoolhouse; two iron greenhouses; a large arbour; fountains, footbridges, flights of steps, a delightful viewpoint, and, most impressive of all, the Loring Museum, a small, Doric-style building which housed the archaeological discoveries unearthed in the excavations financed by the estate’s first owners. Some of these archaeological pieces are on display around the museum, having recently been relocated as part of a project by the architect Jose Fernandez Oyarzabal. See main advert opposite

Readers Writes - BEWARE! Barcelona Pick pocketing - The infamous Bird Poo Scam While crossing Mallorca Street at Napols, in Barcelona we were splashed with a liquid that looked and smelled like bird poo. A man in his 20’s, walking behind us, said he had witnessed a bird flying over. He offered to go to his apartment & get us water. We stood in what we thought to be the lobby of his apartment (he had a key to the building) while he helped us clean. We then took a cab back to our hotel, only to find that we had no money to pay the driver—we had been cleaned of our money and credit cards by that helpful guy. The next day, we went back to the same area and met 4 people who had just been robbed in the similar manner. This time, the robber was on a motorcycle. He, too, offered them water for cleaning, entered a different building with a key and helped them clean. Between the 6 of us, we lost almost 1,000 Euros, plus credit cards and other ID. The Barcelona police weren't interested in investigating these crimes. Even though we had excellent details, addresses and descriptions to report to the police, they couldn’t be bothered investigating. These thieves are very accomplished and the scam is designed for robbing couples. Tourists beware Barcelona is fraught with crime and the police are of no help. ------------------------------------------------------Closer to home... My wife has just had her hand bag stolen in SuperSol Car Park in Torre Del Mar. Look out for anyone or as in this case a guy in a dark blue Astra using the usual ploy of: - “Excuse me! Do you know the way to (somewhere??)” in Spanish which of course takes most English off guard and then repeats it in English (As if he didn't already know) and of course while distracted and being typically English (friendly and helpful) the accomplice opens your passenger door and goodbye hand bag with your whole life and more in it!! 3D Television The most asked question at the moment is when can I get a 3D television? It is not an easy answer as there are still many problems to be solved. First of all, as far as my research into the industry is concerned, there are at least 5 differing standards. This could lead to some major headaches. Remember the old Betamax and VHS standards for Videos and the CD versus the Mini disc as examples. I think we should all be a little patient to see which way the industry will go. Also all the systems produced require the wearing of glasses and they can be as much as 120 pounds a pair (Sony). Imagine putting the kettle on during the break and falling over the dog with them on. Next the problem is broadcasts of TV with 3D content. I know of one current broadcast and there are proposals for test broadcasts by some companies. It may be as long as 10 to 15 years before we see regular programming. Some manufacturers are hedging their bets by producing TV sets that are 3D ready, but beware of the way the industry follows standards and take some advice

Schizophrenia - The Split View The illness schizophrenia has such a difficult, misleading and frightening name that it does not do justice to the condition. Rather than encouraging people to try to understand the illness, the very word puts people’s backs up straight away. Its Greek language roots – ‘schizo’ [split] and ‘phrene’ [mind] – were not chosen in 1911 to mean ‘split personality’, as many people think. The word was ill-advisedly coined to refer to the fragmented thinking of sufferers. In a new book Avoiding the Inevitable, Nerja author Sheila Beacham pens a guide to the illness. It aims to dismiss the myths surrounding schizophrenia, those of dual personalities, good and murderous evil, as portrayed in so many films. In my book I have tried, in an easy way, to educate both those involved with a schizophrenic patient and the public generally, about exactly what schizophrenia is really like. It was hot and humid in town and their traditional garb was making them so uncomfortable, they decided to stop in at Patty McGuire's Pub for a cold soft drink.. Patty had recently added special legs to his barstools, which were the talk of the fashionable eastside neighborhood. All 5 Nuns sat up at the bar and were enjoying their Cokes when Monsignor Riley and Father McGinty entered the bar through the front door. Mind, Body, Spirit This month I’d like to address a subject that has very probably touched the lives of all our readers in some way, either personally or through a relative, friend or loved one: Cancer. Despite tremendous advances in screening and early diagnosis, Cancer is still one of the largest single causes of mortality. Some types of cancer are increasing and a diagnosis is still widely perceived as a death sentence. Recently I received an email containing a one-line prayer and the request to pass it on. It read: "Dear God. I pray for the cure of cancer. Amen.” Of course the subtext of the prayer is: “Cancer is still incurable, so all we can do is pray”. Whilst I would never underestimate the power of prayer, I have to say that this is a dour message to pass on, offering little in the way of hope or comfort to anyone afflicted with this disease. THERE ALREADY IS A CURE FOR CANCER! Actually, there are tens of thousands, if not millions of cures for cancer. Its generic name is: "The power of Human Beings to heal themselves," while its specific names are the names of all those inspiring souls who have claimed that power and through whatever means, have healed themselves of cancer. Perhaps you personally know such a person, maybe more than one. The alternative/holistic shelves of our bookstores carry dozens of books written by and about such people and the means by which they have healed themselves, some are even written by medical practitioners! In my 25 years as a professional healer I have been privileged to assist in and facilitate many such healings. For treatment to be successful, early diagnosis is extremely advantageous, giving the person time to address the underlying causes. The first

priority in a holistic approach is alleviation of the stress which has caused the body's immune system to malfunction allowing cancerous cells to develop undetected and unchecked. Nutrition & lifestyle play a big part too. Whilst surgery and chemotherapy are options, there are other less aggressive curative agents which can be effective in halting and reversing the proliferation of metastasising cells without noxious side effects. From a Mind-Body perspective, a complete cure involves getting to the psycho-emotional roots of what may have caused the cancer in the first place – often years or even decades before its symptoms first appeared – and healing them. It is not my intention here to diminish the huge challenge laid down to those of us who have faced or are presently facing a diagnosis of cancer, nor to diminish the massive efforts of all those fighting cancer, by whatever means, in homes and hospitals around the world. Like many of you, I too have lost people near and dear to me and shared their heroic battle for life. But rather than a diagnosis of cancer being a death sentence, let it be an invitation to reclaim one's Life in the full sense of the word, and become a wiser and more empowered person as a result. Rather than meeting the shocking news with helplessness and prayers for a cure, BE the answer to the prayer!
