m Fro Ed... the

Welcome, everyone, to the July edition of The Sentinella. Summer is certainly here and the

heat is on... but it looks like we are going to be enjoying it without many tourists and in the best way we can again, given the circumstances. There are still no events for us to look forward to, so we will have to make our own entertainment instead!

I feel sorry for the tourists — especially the Brits, who put up with cold and wet conditions for much of the year, with the UK summer hitting temperatures of a maybe a staggering 20 degrees which last all of a full week; oh, except for the brief, savage heatwaves they’ve had for the last couple of years, during which everything grinds to a halt because the roads, equipment — and even people — can’t cope! These are the folk who are really missing out — many of us lucky expats don’t know how good we have it in this climate here. Of course, some of us have loved ones whom we are desperately wanting to visit, but by and large, we pretty much have it all here — sun almost every day now until December, sea, sangria, beaches, cheap nights out … what more could we want? Oh yes, the summer entertainment! So, what will we do this summer? There are only so many beach and pool days one can do in a week and let’s face it, we have about 12 weeks ahead of us. One option is to jump on the bus to Malaga; it really is very easy to do from Torre del Mar bus station and can be as cheap as 5€ return. The city is beautiful and is more than 2,800 years old. You can easily spend a whole day there and still return for more. Whether you decide to shop, sightsee — such as the Cathedral, Picasso museum, the Roman Theatre, galleries etc — or just meander the streets in the old town, you would have spent a great day in Malaga City. Another idea … why not organise something with friends or family similar to the popular TV show, ‘Come Dine With Me’? Invite a group of

friends and get cooking. You could do it for fun or why not vote and have a prize at the end of it?

There are some lovely boats for hire — especially the catamaran based at Marina del Este, La Herradura. Book the boat for a morning or afternoon with friends, do some dolphin spotting, enjoy complimentary drinks throughout, a magnificent buffet — and have a whale of a time. See contact information on pages 23 and 63.  Or how about having a movie night? If you have space outdoors, set up the TV or projector, get the drinks and popcorn at the ready and maybe do a lucky dip to decide which film to watch. Everyone likes a movie night once in a while.

Visit a zoo, take a trip to the cable cars in Benalmadena, or if you are a sporty person, visit Amazonia in Marbella, the largest adventure park in Andalucia. Visit a waterpark — Aquavelis is now open in Torre del Mar, see advert on page 55 for a discount. These are just a few ideas. There are many more, even if you select one new one a week it will break up the beach trips. On that note, I wish you all — residents and holidaymakers — a fabulous summer! Enjoy the read!

Slither horror A family in Michigan, USA, discovered some unwelcome co-habitees in their rented home. Living with an infestation of rats, cockroaches and bees was already hard enough for Harry Pugliese and his family, so when their ceiling collapsed after months of leaking, imagine their horror as they discovered snakes were also living among them. Harry says he told his landlord about the leaky roof back in February, but nothing was done and when the ceiling suddenly caved in, at least four rat snakes were revealed to be living inside it. The rat snakes — which are non-venomous but can grow up to five feet long — are believed to have been there for some time, unbeknown to the “official” house occupiers. Animal Control told the family they’d need permission from the landlord to take the roof down and remove the reptiles. According to Harry, the landlord refused, even though the family were already dealing with a number of other infestations. To make matters worse, he then served Harry an eviction notice, giving the family just one week to move out of the home in Lafayette, Georgia, USA. Bear rage An American teenager was so enraged when she saw a brown bear standing on a wall in her garden fighting with her three pet dogs that she tackled it with her bare hands. Hailey Morinico, of Bradbury, California, rushed to protect her beloved pets and succeeded in pushing the angry bear — who had cubs in tow, making it even more dangerous — off the wall. “It’s not something I’d recommend someone to do, but I had to save my dogs so I just jumped in,” the 17-year-old said afterwards. “Luckily, I escaped unscathed with just a sprained finger and a scraped knee.”

Strange News (Continued)

Ark grounded An international incident of biblical proportions has kicked off on Ipswich’s waterfront. A replica of Noah’s Ark is currently stuck there because it doesn’t have the correct paperwork to say that it is seaworthy. The vessel arrived at Orwell Quay in November 2019 and has been detained there ever since by the coastguard. The £2.6 million biblical museum is owned by Dutch TV producer Aad Peters, who could apply for an exemption to be allowed to return to Holland. But the Coastguard has serious concerns and insists it is not safe. A spokesman said: “Noah’s Ark will remain detained until all the deficiencies have been put right and an MCA surveyor is invited back by the owners to check they’ve been corrected.”

Slow but sure A giant tortoise somehow ended up a mile from his home and had to be taken back in a police van. Titan, who weighs nine stone, lives in a garden in Suffolk where he is penned in by a three-foot high fence. His owner has no idea how he escaped from his enclosure. It took three police officers to lift up Titan, who is 35 years old and measures a metre across, after he was spotted in Kesgrave, near Ipswich. His owner Richard Aston had no idea that his pet African sulcata tortoise was having such an odyssey. Mr Aston told the BBC: “There was no sign of the fence being broken, and he can’t jump over it; it’s a total mystery but obviously I’m delighted to have him home safe and sound.”

Interesting Facts... Russian territory is huge and the majority of it is Siberia. Russia is 60% forest and half of that forest is totally uninhabited by humans.

Moscow’s Kremlin is the biggest active medieval fortress in the world. Its territory spans more than 27 hectares (67 acres). The walls are over 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) long. Twenty towers are sprinkled across the grounds, each with its own personal name (apart from two anonymous towers).

The Trans-Siberian Railroad is the longest in the world; its length is 9,289 kilometers (5,772 miles) and crosses eight time zones. To travel the whole railroad, you would need to spend around a week in a train. Russians are the world's fourth biggest drinkers, behind Belarus, Moldova and Lithuania. The word "vodka" derives for the word "voda", which means "water".

There are approximately 10 million more women in Russia than there are men. The imbalance was initially believed to the result of so many men dying during World War II.

The male life expectancy is just 65, lower than it is in North Korea or Iraq. Russian women, on the other hand, can expect to live to 76.

Random Joke

The Hunchback of Notre Dame had died

The priests realised they would need a new person to ring the bells. They decided to hold auditions. After advertising the position in the town centre there was a long line of peasants waiting to try out the next day. One by one the priests called the peasants forward to pull the rope, ring the bells and make their case that they should get the late hunchback's position. Some were terrible, others were better but none could match the old hunchback's abilities. After a long day and no success the priests called the last man forward. But looking at the man they realised he would never do. "You've got no arms!" they cried. "How will you ever pull the rope?" "Give me one chance father and I'm sure you will be pleased" So relenting, the priests allowed the man to come forward. He quickly ran past the rope, up the bell tower and proceeded to run at the

full speed toward the bells, slamming his head into them. The priests who had followed were certain from the impact the man would be knocked out cold but he remained on his feet and what's more, continued to slam his head into the bells repeatedly. The priests stood shocked at this odd man's behaviour. But soon their ears tuned in to the sound he was creating with his repeated skull-cracking blows. It was music, it was wonderful! They had to admit he might even be better than the old hunchback. The priests were delighted. But as the man prepared to strike his head for a final note, he took one step to far back, tripped over the railing and plunged down the bell tower to his death. Staring over the edge the priests were in shock by this turn of events. "Tis a shame..." said one priest. "Did you know the man?" said the other. "No, but his face sure rings a bell"

Funny Thoughts

Ponder over this collection of funny thoughts

Why are they called apartments, when they're all stuck together? Why do people without a watch look at their wrist when you ask them what time it is? Why does sour cream have an expiry date? What hair colour do they put on the driver's licenses of bald men?

Strange! No one ever says "It's only a game," when their team is winning Why is it called a "building" when it is already built? Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

Is it a law of nature that women have to sneeze as soon as they apply their mascara?

If nothing ever sticks to TEFLON, how do they make TEFLON stick to the pan?

Why is it that when you're driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio? Why does an alarm clock "go off" when it begins ringing? Why is the word "abbreviate" so long?

Why are they called 'stands' when they're made for sitting?

Why is it when two planes almost hit each other it is called a "near miss"? Shouldn't it be called a "near hit"? Why is it called rush hour when everything moves so slow?

Need A Date?

Let’s be honest: Sometimes it’s tough to tell if your date’s just being nice, or if she’s really into you. So if you need help sussing out your lady love’s true feelings, check out these pointers from Greg Hartley. A former Army Special Forces interrogator and author of I Can Read You Like a Book: How to Spot the Messages and Emotions People Are Really Sending With Their Body Language. Who knew your date’s smile, complexion and even where she places her handbag can reveal whether she considers you friend or boyfriend material? Five signs your date is into you…

1) She tilts her head “When a woman sees and feels especially comfortable with a man, she will tilt her head,” Hartley says. A tilt in any direction, right, left or down are all signs that she’s interested in getting to know you better, say, over another date.

Healthy Food with Art Gallery

You must try our draught beer from our very own Bodega

2) She takes a sip when you take a sip When a woman is drawn to a man, she’ll instinctively mirror his actions, Hartley says. While men do this, too, women are more likely than men to first begin the copying. What should you look for? “You might notice she will shift her body in the same direction as yours or take your lead for behaviour changes, like picking up a glass to drink or blinking her eyes repeatedly if you’re doing so,” he suggests. If you want to test her, lean forward and see if she comes closer, too.

3) She twirls her hair Since the beginning of time, a woman’s hair has been celebrated as a symbol of her sexuality (does the story of Samson and Delilah ring a bell?). And it’s true today, says Hartley: If your date begins twirling or playing with her hair while talking to you, it is a good sign she’s into you and subconsciously trying to attract you. 4) She gets a glow While blushing often means embarrassment, don’t assume that her rosy cheeks are an

indication of discomfort. When a woman is sexually aroused and attracted, blood flows not only to her nether regions, but also to her face, which causes her cheeks to get redder, Hartley explains. And if your date is smitten, he adds, her lips and even eyelids will get fuller, too, he says.

5) Her pupils dilate While your gaze is fixed on her, pay particular attention to her pupils, advises Hartley. “When a woman is attracted to a man, her pupils will dilate,” he notes. “Essentially, the body does this in order to allow itself to take in more of a good thing.” …and five signs your date is not into you

1) She crosses her arms “When a woman on a date places her hands in front of her body, especially if they are crossed, she is closing herself off from the man,” Hartley notes. If you get this red flag, you don’t stand a chance… and she wants you to know it. “Men are not nearly as perceptive as women, so even if she’s not consciously aware of it, a woman knows her body language needs to be very loud,” Hartley explains. “In this instance, that body language reads loud and clear.”

2) She places her bag between you two “When I ask male friends how a blind date went, step-by-step, and they say ‘she put her bag on the table’, I always know that’s a bad sign,” Hartley says. If your date places her handbag a real and physical barrier between you two, she’s showing she wants to create distance, he says. Not a good sign.

3) She speaks faster than an auctioneer So she seems to love talking to you? Before you break open the bubbly, note the speed of her small talk. “Romantic conversation does not occur at the same speed as business conversation,” Hartley says. “Conversation between two people who are attracted typically slows to about three-quarter speed and softens. In fact, most emotional conversation, with the exception of very hostile conversation, is at a slowed cadence.”

35

That said, she may be nervous early in your first date, and her nerves can cause her to spit her sentences out rapid-fire. But if by the end of the evening she’s still going at a rapid rate, consider it a clue that she just wants to be friends at best.

4) She offers you a chin-up smile Though it’s tempting to interpret any old smile as a sign of interest, all smiles are not created equal. Smiles can say a lot “I’m polite,” “I’m crazy about you,” and, believe it or not, “I can’t stand you.” The secret to decoding what her smile really means? It’s all in the chin placement. A woman who gives you a relaxed, chin down “soft smile” is smitten and wants you to dig her back, Hartley explains. A full-on toothpaste grin or stiff and polite smile both of which generally involve the chin raised up, mean either “I like you as a friend” or “I wanna get out of here!” 5) She strokes her neck If your date’s telling you she agrees that you should get together again, that’s a good sign, right? Maybe, says Hartley. “Her body language may be the key to the real truth,” he says. “If a woman is gently stroking her neck when telling you this, it may be a sign that she’s interested, but it is also known to be a sign of lying.” To figuring out which message she’s sending, consider the aforementioned “she’s not into you” signals. If she’s also giving you the raised-chin smile and speaking to you over a giant handbag, you may want to move on to your next prospect. You’ve no excuses now to find yourself the perfect lady!

The Good Old Days

For those of you old enough to enjoy it and those of you unfortunate enough to be young enough to have missed it…

Before the Internet... Before Political Correctness... Before semi-automatics, joyriders and crack....

Before SEGA or Super Nintendo... Way back........I'm talking about Hide and Seek in the park. The corner shop. Hopscotch, Butterscotch, Skipping, Handstands, Football with an old can, Fingerbob, Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the Menace. Roly Poly, Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams. An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune. Watching Saturday morning cartoons, short commercials or the flicks. Tomorrow People, Tiswas or Swapshop?, and 'Why Don't You'? or staying up for Doctor Who. When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere. Playing Marbles. Ball bearings. Big 'uns and Little 'uns. Cops and Robbers,

37

Cowboys and Indians, and Zorro. Climbing trees. Walking to school, no matter what the weather. Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights. Spinning around on roundabouts, getting dizzy and falling down. Water balloons were the ultimate weapon. Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle. Choppers and Grifters.

Remember when...There were three types of trainers - girls and boys, and Dunlop Green Flash. The only time you wore them at School was for P.E. And they were called gym shoes or if you are older - plimsoles!

Remember when....Decisions were made by going "Ip Dip, Sky Blue" “Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in Monopoly. The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult. And if you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!

Out And About In Torrox

Torrox is the name of a collection of locations situated east of Torre Del Mar. This is a popular spot to live and holiday for both Spanish and other European nations with one big factor being it has the best climate in Europe. Each of these places have much to offer in their own right and collectively, they form a lovely area to live, work and relax. Torrox Costa is located just 15km from Torre Del Mar. Torrox Costa has a totally different character and personality to its near neighbour. Like much of this coast, there’s an impressive promenade that sweeps the length of the beaches here. At its eastern end, just past the lighthouse, the beach is dog friendly and is a great spot to let your furry friend run along the shoreline.

Torrox Pueblo is situated at the foothills of the Alpujarra mountains, a couple of miles inland from Torrox Costa. This is traditional white-washed village set in a green valley. There’s a traditional Spanish feel to this small village, despite it being the home to many people from other parts of the world. Located between Torrox Costa and Pueblo, Torrox Park is a large collection of urbanisations that are popular relocation spots with those who decide to make this area of Axarquía their home. There’s property to suit every budget and style: spacious villas, townhouses and apartments along with a large and well equipped mobile home park that allows all year living. Whilst, in itself, Torrox Park, doesn’t offer much for day trippers, many visitors stay here as homes are frequently listed for holiday rental. It does provide all the services required for a smooth stay or relocation: bars, restaurants, supermarkets as well as doctors, chemists, hairdressers etc.

The combination of Torrox Costa, Pueblo and Park is a winning one. Each has their own distinct character but each are connected to form an excellent place to stay, explore and maybe even to live. Shop Local - Support Your Local Community

I Love My Job

Rob is a commercial diver in Western Australia. He does underwater repairs on offshore drilling rigs. Below is an e-mail he sent to his sister. She then sent it to a radio station in Perth, which was sponsoring a worst job experience contest. Needless to say, she won!

"Another note from your bottom-dwelling brother. Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realise it's not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job. As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wetsuit. This time of year the water is quite cool, so what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial 'water heater'. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks water out of the sea and heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver through a hose, taped to the side of the suit. I've used it several times with no problems.

What I do, when I get to the bottom of the sea and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wetsuit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi.

Everything was going well until, all of a sudden, my bum started to itch. So, of course I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my arse started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was already done. In agony, I realised what had happened. The machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it. However, the crack of my bum was not as fortunate. When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my bum. I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma

over the phone-link. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all in fits of hysterical laughter. I was then instructed to make three agonising decompression stops, totalling thirty-five minutes, before I could reach the surface. When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out, the Medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my bum as soon as I got into the dry chamber. Yes the cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poo for two days because my bum was swollen shut. So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish up your bum. Now repeat to yourself "I love my job, I love my job, I love my job".

Roasted Vegetable Pasta

Ingredients 4 carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 onions, cut into 1-inch pieces 5 small squash, sliced in half 2 small zucchini, cut into 1-inch pieces 10 cherry tomatoes 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar 2 garlic cloves, minced ½ teaspoon herbes de Provence Leaves from 8 sprigs fresh thyme 1 16-ounce package brown rice penne pasta ½ cup crumbled feta cheese ½ cup fresh basil, more for garnish Juice of ½ small lemon, more if desired Pinches of red pepper flakes Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Place the carrots and onions on the first sheet and the squash, zucchini, and tomatoes on the other. Drizzle both sheets of vegetables with olive oil and generous pinches of salt and pepper. Place the sheet with the carrots and onions in the oven first and roast for 30 to 35

45

minutes or until the onions are tender and lightly charred, and the carrots are tender and browned. Place the second sheet in and roast for 20 minutes, or until the squash and zucchini are golden brown around the edges, and the tomatoes are lightly bursting. Remove from the oven and set aside.

2. In the bottom of a large bowl, combine the 1 tablespoon of olive oil with the sherry vinegar, garlic, herbes de Provence, thyme, ¼ teaspoon salt, and several grinds of black pepper. Stir in the roasted vegetables. Prepare the pasta according to the instructions on the package, cooking until al dente. Drain and transfer the cooked pasta to the large bowl with the roasted vegetables and toss to coat. 3. Add the feta, basil, lemon juice, and red pepper flakes and gently toss. Season (generously!) to taste with more salt, pepper, and lemon juice, as desired. 4. Garnish with more fresh herbs and a generous drizzle of olive oil.

4. If any involved vehicle leaves the incident, write down the license plate, make and model or take photos. 5. If there are witnesses, take their names, surnames, addresses and telephone numbers.

6. If you have a camera and security conditions allow it, take photos of the vehicles involved. 7. Write down the license plate, make and

8. If there are discrepancies with those involved, call the Police.

Halting erosion using Vetiver from VetiverSpain

Vetiver is a non-invasive clumping grass that grows rapidly to about 2 metres tall. Vetiver is used mostly to fight erosion, preserve top soil and clean contaminated water. Vetiver can be cutback a few times a year so the cuttings can be used as a beneficial mulch and a nutritious feed for farm animals. Located in Sayalonga at an elevation of 500 metres we plant all year round but Spring planting gets the best results. Vetiver loves the heat of summer to get established faster. A Woman’s Poem

He didn’t like the casserole, and he didn’t like my cake. He said my biscuits were too hard, not like his mother used to make. I didn’t make the coffee right, he didn’t like my stew, I didn’t fold his pants like his mother used to do. I pondered for an answer, I was looking for a clue. Then I turned around and smacked the s*** out of him, like his mother used to do.

Do Not Assume

I met an older woman at a bar last night. She looked pretty good for a 60-year old. In fact, she wasn’t too bad at all, and I found myself thinking she probably had a really hot daughter. We drank a couple of beers, and she asked if I’ ever had a Sportsman’s Double? ‘What’s that?’ I asked. ‘It’s a mother and daughter threesome,’ she said. As my mind began to embrace the idea, and I wondered what her daughter might look like, I said, ‘No, I haven’t’. We drank a bit more, then she said with a wink, ‘Tonight’s your lucky night’. We went back to her place. We walked in. She put on the hall light and shouted upstairs: ‘Mum... you still awake?’

Almayate: An Undiscovered Gem By The Mediterranean Sea

Axarquía has a long coastline stretching from just outside of Malaga to just past Nerja. Almayate is often overlooked, in the desire to head to the larger resorts of the region. However, this small resort has much to offer to day trippers or holiday makers.

Almayate lies at the western end of Torre Del Mar but is quite different from its lively and larger neighbour. This is a relaxed resort with a long stretch of wide beach, nestled between ancient lookout towers at both ends of the resort. Even more dominant is the ubiquitous Osborne Bull towering over the coastline, set on the Peñón del Toro crag. It’s quite a dramatic sight. Almayate Alto and Almayate Bajo Almayate has two separate areas: Almayate Alto, the inland or high area, which is a scattered collection of houses and farms and Almayate Bajo, the coastal area. Here the houses are more prolific, most of the town’s population lives in this area and the majority of visitors stay here in either one of the campsites, set enviably by the sea, or in a holiday rental. Possibly, a reason why this small settlement has not attracted a deluge of visitors is the fact that no hotels are located here. This makes it one of the few quiet resorts in Axarquía. This small village actually only exists in its

current form because of the quarries which provided stone to build Malaga Cathedral which meant that the workforce located here. However, there is evidence of earlier settlements including Roman and Arabic. Now, from these small beginnings, the town has expanded using the fertile ground near the coast to grow and produce sugar cane, plants and flowers etc. There are some excellent garden centres here too. Within the pueblo, set about 1/2km from the coast, there’s a bank, shops, some bars and restaurants.

Almayate Beach has dark sand scattered with pebbles with a stretch of about 800 meters. There are few services: a couple of seasonal chirunguitos of a definite beach shack type, look out across the Mediterranean Sea to North Africa. There isn’t a promenade as such, so this is a place for beach walking. However, there is ample parking. At the Torre Del Mar side of the beach, is the isolated and privately located nudist beach. This discrete beach is apparently among the top three nude beaches in Spain. There is even a naturist campsite close to the beach, along with a beach bar and restaurant. Whilst the beach services are limited or scarce, this is the precise attraction of Almayate. The unspoilt nature and the location next to agricultural land make it the ideal place to relax, unwind and enjoy.

De Cotta Law

Signing a Spanish form Will at the Spanish Notary or in the UK If you have assets in Spain it is strongly recommended that you have a separate Spanish Will, even if you already have a UK Will. WHY? Because having a Spanish Will makes dealing with the deceased person’s estate simpler, quicker and cheaper for the beneficiaries. If you do not have a Spanish Will and you have assets in Spain then you run the risk of your beneficiaries incurring avoidable Spanish inheritance tax fines, considerable delays in winding up or transferring your estate and a considerably higher cost in dealing with the inheritance. You may want to update an existing Spanish Will to keep up with changes in taxation, changes in the law or simply due to a change in your personal circumstances.

Correct wording in a Will can help to avoid the Spanish law of compulsory heirs being applied to your estate which would mean your estate could pass to people other than to the intended beneficiaries. For example, in Spanish law a parent or child takes precedence over a spouse. Your Spanish Will can even be signed before a notary in Spain and we can advise and take your instructions. If you are unable to come to Spain you can still make a Spanish form Will in the UK. This is all the more important at the current time with the remaining restrictions on travel. One of our lawyers can draft the Will in

69

English and organise a signing in front of a notary in the UK. The signed Will is then legalised with an apostille for use in Spain, translated into Spanish and registered at the Spanish Wills registry. The Will, once signed and registered, has the same validity as a Spanish Will signed at a notary in Spain. We can arrange the whole process including, if you wish, finding an appropriate notary and arranging the appointment. & t i Fru Factss Veg arrot C

Carrots were domesticated in the ancient empires located in today’s Iran and Afghanistan over 5000 years ago. From there, this root vegetable spread across the world.

There are over 100 species of edible carrots today. The world produces an estimated 40 million tons of carrots every year. 80% of carrot is water.

Carrot is one of the most sugary vegetables in the world. Only beet has more. One teaspoon can hold 2000 carrot seeds.

The world longest carrot was measured to be 5.839 metres (19 feet 1 7/8 inches). The heaviest one was grown in 1998 and it weighted 8.61 Kg.

or other foods rich in vitamin A or carotenoids. Cooked carrots are better for you than raw. Cooking the vegetable releases more beta-carotene. The raw vegetable only gives you 3% beta-carotene, but cooked you get up to 40%. They can help reduce your risk of cancer. Carotenoids may help protect against prostate, colon and stomach cancer.

They can help you lose weight. Since 1/2 cup of carrots only have 41 calories. The greens of a carrot are edible as a leaf vegetable although they are rarely used. Dutch people were the ones who first cultivated the orange carrot.

Orange carrots get their bright color from beta carotene, an antioxidant that your body converts into vitamin A. Intake of carrots has been linked to lower cholesterol levels.

Individuals with low vitamin A levels are more likely to experience night blindness, a condition that may diminish by eating carrots

Change Of Tax Residence In Spain - Be Careful!

There has been a lot of talk lately about ‘Youtubers’ changing their residence for tax reasons. The most famous and wealthy ‘Youtubers’ have decided to move from Spain to Andorra to pay less income tax.

It is important to clarify that it is not enough just to start living in another country in order to change your tax residence. There are some other requirements that need to be met to avoid unpleasant fines from the Spanish tax office.

How do you make the change? A person who has resided in Spain and been declaring and paying their tax annually (IRPF), and want to stop doing so (because they have started residing in another country), must communicate the change in their circumstances to the Treasury using the 030 model. Once this has been submitted, the Inland Revenue will almost certainly request proof of residence in another State. Therefore, the person concerned must provide a Tax Residence Certificate issued by the authorities of that territory in which they reside. Please be aware that to obtain this certificate, in general, it is necessary to prove that the individual resides in that country for most of the year, that is, more than 183 days. It is essential to get a Tax Residence Certificate issued by the country of new residence ASAP.

However, the above requirement may not be sufficient for the Inland Revenue to consider that there has been a change of actual residence (in which case the affected person must continue to pay in the IRPF for all his worldly income). It is important to be aware that this could occur in the following situations: -

1) When the main core of an individual’s economic interests (i.e., greater part of any income and/or investments), remain in Spain. 2) When the individual’s children and /or spouse continue to live in Spain, unless otherwise proven. These requirements can create conflict over the actual tax residence of an individual. When these rules converge, it could occur that if the Spanish standards are applied together with those of the country of destination, a person ends up being resident

in both territories (i.e. If he has resided more than half the year abroad, but his core interests remain in Spain).

This can only be avoided if there is an agreement with that country to avoid double taxation, when the Convention would establish where the taxpayer should be considered resident (usually this appears in Article 4 of these Conventions). There are general priority criteria to sort out these situations and to establish where the actual tax residence is (and therefore in which country it is taxed). The agreements between countries usually lay down the following criteria, which are applied successively and in the following order: • Permanent residence. First, a person is considered a resident where they have a permanent residence at their disposal. • Relationships. If the taxpayer has permanent housing in both territories, where he has closer personal (where his family resides) and economic (greater wealth). • Habitual residence. If residence cannot be determined based on the above criteria, it shall be understood to be located where the taxpayer habitually resides. • Nationality. Finally, the residence shall be determined by the country of which it is a national.

Personal and economic relations. In relation to this criterion, consideration is given to family and social relations, occupations, political, cultural, or other activities, the location of business or professional activities, the headquarters of wealth management, etc. CONCLUSION: It is not enough for a person to reside abroad more than 183 days a year in another country to avoid being considered a tax residence in Spain. If their personal and economic interests remain in Spain, they will not lose their status as a taxpayer in Spain.

If you are moving to Spain or are changing your resident to somewhere outside of Spain, it is important to seek professional tax advice to avoid problems. Your official tax residence must be clarified from the outset. For further information or advice on this matter, do not hesitate to contact us: 952 901 225/WhatsApp 646 776 118 e-mail: mail@axarquiasolicitors.com See main advert opposite

Alcohol

How to avoid Covid 1) Eat right! 2) Make sure you get your daily dose of fruits and veggies. 3) Take your vitamins and bump up your vitamin C. 4) Get plenty of exercise because exercise helps build your immune system. 5) Walk for at least an hour a day.. 6) Go for a swim.. 7) Take the stairs instead of the elevator, etc. 8) Wash your hands often. 9) If you can't wash them, keep a bottle of antibacterial stuff around. 10) Get lots of fresh air. 11) Open doors & windows whenever possible. 12) Try to eliminate as much stress from your life as you can. 13) Get plenty of rest.

Or take the doctor's approach.. Think about it... When you go for a flu shot, what do they do first? They Clean your arm with alcohol... Why? Because Alcohol KILLS GERMS. So I walk to the off licence - (exercise) I put lime in my lager - (fruit) Celery in my Bloody Mary - (veggies) Drink outdoors on the bar patio - (fresh air) Tell jokes, laugh (eliminate stress) Then pass out. (rest)

The way I see it... If you keep your alcohol levels up flu germs can't get you! My grandmother always said, 'A shot in the glass is better than one in the ass!'

Swimming Pools - Dream Or A Nightmare?

The idea of having a swimming pool is a common dream of people purchasing a home in Spain. Whilst the dream is beautiful the reality can quickly turn into a living nightmare.

One of the most common issues affecting the correct running of a swimming pool is the tile grouting dissolving. The reason for this is usually due to the PH levels not being correct over a sustained period of time. In Southern Spain the PH levels are usually extremely high, this makes the water acidic and this will eat away at the grouting. The loosening of grouting not only disfigures the look of the pool but will also encourage algae to form in the recesses turning your blue pool to a vivid pond green, there is no more depressing sight than this.

The other side effect of missing grouting is the need to use an excessive amount of expensive pool chemicals to try and keep the water in a balanced state, plus the additional work and time commitment of the additional

79

cleaning required.

Leaching of the water due to substandard grouting will result in substantial lose of water. The concrete will absorb the water and the metal rebars in the concrete can rust meaning that the structural integrity of the pool can be undermined. The solution is to re-grout the pool. This requires manually removing the old grout by raking out between the tiles, and applying new grouting. If standard pool grouting is used it will not adhere to the shallow groves between the tiles as there will be not enough purchase and may lift after a short period of time. Re-grouting should be done using a grout manufactured especially for this purpose.

In the worst case scenario the pool tiles will require removing, the walls screeded and very importantly painted with an impermeable silicon sealant prior to applying the new pool tiles. By Lee Talbot Construction, see ad below

Director: Mike Newell Stars: Lily James, Jessica Brown Findlay, Tom Courtenay, Michiel Huisman, Katherine Parkinson, Matthew Goode and Marek Oravec. Rating: 12+ Running time: 120mins

If you can get past the highly unusual title, this film is a truly entertaining, thought-provoking and heart-warming tale for all ages. In the midst of a blossoming career as a novelist and a romance with a charming, rich American, Juliet Ashton (Lily James) embarks on a pen-pal relationship with one of the members of the Society, the name of which was made up on the spur of the

moment to divert German suspicions that a group of islanders was breaking the law by rearing a pig. One of the farmers, Eben Ramsey (Tom Courtenay), used to make potato peel pie and blurted these words out when challenged one night by patrolling soldiers.

Despite being part of the British Isles, the Island of Guernsey was occupied by the Nazis throughout World War II. Now, the war is over. The intruders are gone. The Literary and Potato Peel Society is still thriving. Juliet is intrigued. With the approval of her publisher — and in the hope that she may be able to write an article about the group with its puzzling name and origins — Juliet sets off for a short visit. Just as she imagined, Guernsey is a magical place. The society's members are highly original, with moving stories to tell and secrets that must be uncovered. What started as a short visit becomes a life-affecting odyssey that changes Juliet forever. Star Rating ***/*****

Man Or Woman

A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.'

A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?'

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else; 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your wages on accessories for it. The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('el computador'), because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

The women won!!

Manager Ed Ed Sheeran has embarked on a more hands-on role with his pub and property empire. The singer, 30, has been appointed as a director of Maverick Properties Limited, which is said to manage £26million of his investments. In documents first seen by The Sun, Ed has also been named as a director to both Fat Punt Limited and That Dive Bar Portobello Limited which run his pub, Bertie Blossoms, and his restaurant in Notting Hill. That Dive Bar Portobello Limited made a loss of £227,000 in 2019 while Fat Punt Limited had losses of £620,000. However, the bulk of Ed's income comes from his hugely successful music career where he earned £250million from touring alone. The Sun previously reported that Ed's property empire consists of 27 houses, flats and commercial properties thought to be worth £57million.

Walsh’s wilderness The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh has reportedly spent £400,000 on forest land in Essex next to the M25 motorway. According to The Sun, the game show host, 60, has splashed the cash on the barren land next to the country's busiest highway, but it remains unknown what he plans to do with the mysterious new plot. However, it appears grand plans are in store as a lorry unloading soil and a bulldozer were seen on the property, which spans approximately 44 acres. The green strip of property is surrounded by trees, a golf course on one side and the motorway on the other side.

Book bonus? Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced plans to distribute 2,000 copies of her first book, The Bench, to libraries, schools and community centres across the US for 'no cost' to 'help nourish the community through learning and connection.' This is despite poor reviews and amidst ongoing questions over whether the profits from the book will go to charity. It does not appear the initiative will be extended to the UK.

The book, on sale for £12.99, was apparently inspired by a poem she wrote for Prince Harry's first Father's Day the month after Archie was born. She says she explores the 'special bond between father and son' as 'seen through a mother's eyes'. It is also not known if Meghan received an advance for the book but a branding expert previously suggested it would have already netted her £500,000, following a 'bidding war to secure her first venture'.

However British critics have slammed the book, with The Telegraph's Claire Allfree calling it 'semi-literate' and writing: “One wonders how any publisher could have thought fit to publish this grammar-defying set of badly rhyming cod homilies, let alone think any child anywhere would want to read it.”

Elle’s enjoyment The highly anticipated Friends reunion thrilled fans when it first aired on HBO Max late last month.

And now Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson has reflected on her time on the hit show, in which she played Joey Tribbiani's roommate and girlfriend Janine Lecroix. A Virtual World - Even When Purchasing A House!

With the ongoing (we all hope, gradually easing) Covid crisis across the world, people are discovering they can work from home! It is now perfectly acceptable to work in a virtual office, just as efficiently as if one would in the physical office, communicating effectively, even having online meetings with colleagues – but at home with the cat on one’s lap!

Who would have thought, a decade or so ago, that such a phenomenon, just a murmur of a possibility at the time, would become so very much acceptable and normal! And now you can pay your bills, change accounts, and manage your banking, purchase and sell, from the comfort of your home pc or mobile. And this has now extended even to purchasing property!

Within the last year, we have carried out many virtual viewings for those not in the country, usually through mobile chat apps, of properties. And people love it! We can show them around a house, double back if they ask us to check out a detail in a room, or a hidden corner of the garden, chat to the owners, even meet the neighbours. This is

93

complemented by making videos which are displayed along with the photos of the property, on the website, and on our YouTube channel (in fact, the YouTube channel attracts followers whether they are looking to buy or not – it seems to appeal, perhaps a little bit of escapism for those unable to buy somewhere under the sun!) Paperwork is easy to check out these days without touching a parchment! And obtaining a power of attorney for a lawyer to represent one is also easy, and not nearly as expensive as it used to be. Much to our surprise, it is now not unusual for our buyers to see their newly purchased houses for the very first time post-sale! We have three at this very moment in time who are looking forward to enjoying their virtual purchases. Of course, it’s not for everyone – smelling the air, feeling the breeze, is not possible virtually – yet! But thank goodness for new technology, it really has converted the virtual world into reality! By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia Real Estate Vélez-Málaga (see advertisement below)

History is in abundance in Lincoln and Lincolnshire. A man is driving down a deserted country road when he notices a sign out of the corner of his eye......It reads: Sisters of St. Francis house of prostitution 10kms. He thinks this is a figment of his imagination and drives on without second thought. Soon he sees another sign which reads: Sisters of St. Francis house of prostitution 5kms. Suddenly he begins to realise that these signs are for real when driving past a third sign saying: Sisters of St. Francis house of prostitution next right. His curiosity gets the best of him and he pulls into the drive. On the far side of the parking lot is a stone building with a small sign next to the door reading: Sisters of St. Francis. He climbs the steps and rings the bell. The door is answered by a nun in a long black habit who asks, 'What may we do for you my son?' He answers, 'I saw your signs along the road and was interested in possibly doing business....' 'Very well my son. Please follow me.' He is led through many winding passages and is soon quite disoriented. The nun stops, 'Please knock on this door.' He does so and another nun in a long habit, holding a tin cup answers the door... This nun instructs, 'Please place 100€ in the cup then go through the large wooden door at the end of the hallway...' He puts 100€ in the cup, eagerly trots down the hall and slips through the door which closes behind him. The door locks and he finds himself in the parking lot facing another sign... Go in peace you have just been screwed by the sisters of St. Francis. Serves you right you sinner! ------------------------------------------------------------A waiter asks a man, ‘May I take your order, sir?’ ‘Yes’ the man replies. ‘I’m just wondering, exactly how do you prepare your chickens?’ ‘Nothing special, sir. We just tell them straight out that they’re going to die.’

Every blonde in the world gathered in Wales for a 'Blonde fair' to show the world that all blondes aren't dumb. To prove they are clever. One blonde lady went on stage and had to answer a maths question live on television. "Okay," said the manager, "You have to answer this correctly to prove you are clever. What is 5 times 5?" The blonde was worried. "Uh...58? "No, the answer is 25." But the blonde crowd was angry and they shouted, "Give her another chance, GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!" The manager agreed. "Okay then, what is 10 minus 3?" The blonde smiled. "4 of course!" "No, the answer is 7" The crowd again wanted her to try again. "Give her another chance, GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!" "Alright," said the manager, "but this is the last chance. What is 2 plus 2?" The blonde thought for a while then said, "uh...4?" The manager started to congratulate her, "Well..." but he was interrupted by the crowd that were shouting. "Give her another chance, GIVE HER ANOTHER CHANCE!" ------------------------------------------------------------I told my mum that I’d opened a theatre. She said, ‘Are you having me on?’ I said, ‘Well I’ll give you an audition but I’m not promising you anything.’ ------------------------------------------------------------I bought a train ticket to France and the ticket seller said ‘Eurostar’ I said ‘Well I’ve been on telly but I’m no Dean Martin. ------------------------------------------------------------I went to the local video shop and I said, ‘Can I have Batman Forever?’ He said ‘No you’ll have to bring it back tomorrow.’ ------------------------------------------------------------I told my girlfriend I had a job in a bowling alley. She said ‘Tenpin?’ I said ‘No permanent.’

Su Wong marries Lee Wong. The next year, the Wongs have a new baby. The nurse brings over a lovely, healthy, bouncy, but definitely a Caucasian, WHITE baby boy. 'Congratulations,' says the nurse to the new parents. 'Well Mr. Wong, what will you and Mrs. Wong name the baby?' The puzzled father looks at his new baby boy and says, 'Well, two Wong's don't make a white, so I think we will name him... Sum Ting Wong ------------------------------------------------------------An elderly couple was watching a Discovery Channel special about a West African bush tribe whose men all had penises 24 inches long. When the black male reaches a certain age, a string is tied around his penis and on the other end is a weight. After a while, the weight stretches the penis to 24 inches. Later that evening as the husband was getting out of the shower, his wife looked at him and said, "How about we try the African string-and-weight procedure?" The husband agreed and they tied a string and a weight to his penis. A few days later, the wife asked the husband, "How is our little tribal experiment coming along?" "Well, it looks like we're about half way there," he replied. "Wow, you mean it's grown to 12 inches?" "No, it's turned black." ------------------------------------------------------------A lonely frog, desperate for any form of company telephoned the Psychic Hotline to find out what his future has in store. His Personal Psychic Advisor advises him, "You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you." The frog is thrilled and says, "This is great! Where will I meet her, at work, at a party?" "No" says the psychic, "In a Biology class." ------------------------------------------------------------One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered

his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?" "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass.." "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said. "But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.." "Bring them along," the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You come with us, also." The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!" "Bring them all, as well," the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind, thank you for taking all of us with you." The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it. You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high"! ------------------------------------------------------------I met this bloke with a didgeridoo and he was playing Dancing Queen on it. I thought ‘that’s Aboriginal’. ------------------------------------------------------------This lorry full of tortoises collided with a van full of terrapins. It was a turtle disaster. ------------------------------------------------------------I went to a pet shop. I said, ‘Can I buy a goldfish?’ The guy said ‘Do you want an aquarium?’ I said ‘I don’t care what star sign it is.’ ------------------------------------------------------------I went into a shop and I said, ‘Can someone sell me a kettle?’ The bloke said ‘Kenwood’ I said ‘Where is he then?’ ------------------------------------------------------------I phoned the local ramblers club today but the bloke just went on and on.
