I’ve lived in Spain for a little more than nine years and in that time I’ve seen many changes, with local businesses, people moving back and forth from the UK and the ‘climate’ both in terms of the weather and the economic kind! And after nine years, I’ve finally got itchy feet and have decided that I’d prefer to now live elsewhere. It’s a hard decision to make in some respects. After all, my lovely parents live here, along with other close family members. However, on the other hand, I feel that there are more opportunities to further my career and entrepreneurial tendencies in the USA. So, I’m leaving sunny España at the end of May and while I’m not sure how long I’ll be allowed to stay in the US for until I touch down in New York, where my adventure begins with attending the Book Expo America, I’m hoping I can stay for at least six months. My boyfriend lives in the US too, so there’s a chance that I may even apply for a visa extension, only granted in very special circumstances! I love it when my life is colourful and exciting. There’s something incredibly adventurous and freeing about not knowing what’s around the corner. And I relish change, in all its shapes and forms.

Strange News Dog Days Each morning, like clockwork, they board the subway, off to begin their daily r o u t i n e amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. But these aren't just any daily commuters. These are stray dogs which live in the outskirts of Moscow, Russia, and commute on the underground trains to and from the city centre in search of food scraps. Then after a hard day scavenging and begging on the streets, they hop back on the train and return to the suburbs where they spend the night. Experts studying the dogs, who usually choose the quietest carriages at the front and back of the train, say they even work together to make sure they get off at the right stop – after learning to judge the length of time they need to spend on the train. stuck Fast - An Austrian doctor stuck acupuncture pins in a patient - and then locked up and went home after forgetting she was there. The doctor at the surgery at W i e n e r Neustadt was in the middle of treating patient Vivi Ziegler, 61, when he had a phone call. He was distracted by the call and then after it finished, he had a question from an assistant and then completely forgot about the patient covered in pins in the surgery. Ms Ziegler said: "I wasn't worried as it was warm and relaxing and I fell asleep, but when I woke up it was dark and cold and I was only partially dressed." When the woman called for help and realised that no one was coming, she managed to find her mobile phone and called police, who rescued her through a window. When contacted by the police, the doctor apologised and promised to give the woman acupuncture treatment for life from now on free of charge.

De Cotta Law Don’t ever ignore a request to appear in court Even if you are a witness or victim, and not the defendant, a request to appear in court must be complied with, as explained by De Cotta Law…. Most people associate an arrest at the airport with criminal activity and think this could never happen to them. However, ignoring a request to appear in the Spanish courts whether as victim, witness or defendant can have unexpected repercussions. Proceedings that may have been archived many years ago may still be ‘on the roll’ and there may be an outstanding warrant issued by a judge who wished to hear evidence from you in a preliminary criminal investigation. Alternatively, you may have been accused of something and been absolved in the proceedings, but if the court were unable to notify you at a current address there may still be a ‘live warrant’ and on swiping your passport, this can come up. There have been recent examples, such as that of a couple who received payment in false notes more than three years ago but as the case was still open, and they had not attended to make their statements, the judge had issued a warrant. In this case it was more like a subpoena or witness summons, so their details came up at the airport. Mistaken identity can also cause problems, for example where you share your name with someone who appeared in previous proceedings. The most important thing is to ensure that if you are requested to appear before the Spanish court you take legal advice and make sure, normally through your lawyer, that you advise the court of your future address and contact details. If there is an arrest or detention at the airport or borders, you always have the benefit of a legal aid lawyer. You can name a private lawyer to act for you but you may have to reimburse the legal aid lawyer for any work they have undertaken on your behalf. In more serious proceedings, the European arrest warrants are very valuable in locating and stopping criminals within Europe. For example with a serious offence, an extradition proceeding can be started, let’s say, in Germany

against an English national who is wanted for trial in Spain. This shows the scope of these arrest warrants. The above applies to criminal proceedings only, but ignoring a civil proceeding can also prove costly. This is because a decision can be made in your absence and the implications in interest and fees can be costly. Other than in minor criminal offences where you can defend yourself, it is always necessary to appoint a lawyer and court procurator in Spain. The Tax System Explained In Beer Suppose that once a week, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to £100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this. The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay £1. The sixth would pay £3. The seventh would pay £7. The eighth would pay £12. The ninth would pay £18 And the tenth man (the richest) would pay £59. So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every week and seemed quite happy with the arrangement until, one day, the owner caused them a little problem. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your weekly beer by £20.” Drinks for the ten men would now cost just £80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free but what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the £20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share? They realised that £20 divided by six is £3.33 but if they subtracted that from everybody's share then not only would the first four men still be drinking for free but the fifth and sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fairer to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage. They decided to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay. And so, the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (a 100% saving). The sixth man now paid £2 instead of £3 (a 33% saving). The seventh man now paid £5 instead of £7 (a 28% saving). The eighth man now paid £9 instead of £12 (a 25% saving). The ninth man now paid £14 instead of £18 (a 22% saving). And the tenth man now paid £49 instead of £59 (a 16% saving). Each of the last six was better off than before with the first four continuing to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got £1 out of the £20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, "but he got £10". "Yes, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved £1 too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me"

"That's true" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get £10 back, when I only got £2? The wealthy get all the breaks". "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "We didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor". The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next week the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important - they didn't have enough money between all of them to pay for even half of the bill. And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy and they just might not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier. David R. However, as with other food and drink, as we see in the "slow food" movement, consumers are increasingly looking for new tastes and experiences and craft beers are part of the new trend. There is a strong and steady growth in the production of craft beers in Andalucía and the rest of Spain. Nowadays, in Spain, there are 150 small producers or micro breweries, and at least 300 different brands. Most of the breweries are located in Catalonia and the Region of Valencia. In recent years, the number has grown in Andalucía which now ranks third (it is possible to find breweries in almost all provinces of the region), followed by Galicia and Madrid. The ''beer culture'' has been growing across Spain, increasing demand for high-quality, lo-

Do you like a challenge? Do you like food? And more to the point, do you like good old English fish and chips? If so, then The Town Frier in Puente Don Manuel is organising a BIG FISH CHALLENGE.

items needed: * 1 cup of water *1/4 cup of brown sugar * 1 gram of yeast *1 or 2 litre bottle Method: 1. Cut the plastic bottle in half. 2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle. 3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes. 4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired. 5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the colour black.) Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control and that should keep the pests at bay !

As a follow-up from last month, here are some of the requirements laid down in the animal rights law of 2003 concerning treatment of pets. Since these laws came into effect, there has been some improvement in the way people treat their animals in the Costa Del Sol, but unfortunately, old stereotypes die hard and animal mistreatment is still a part of life in our corner of the world. Animals are still being mistreated and abandoned. Obligations - Owners of animals must: Keep their animals in good hygienic sanitary conditions with proper shelter. Provide food, water, exercise, vaccinations and treatment for the health of the animal. Microchip at three months of age. Keep dogs on a lead in public places. Dispose of excrement left by their animals in public places. Prohibitions - Fines 1. Maltreatment or physical abuse of animals 75 – 30,000€ 2. Abandonment of an animal 2,000 – 30,000€

The town hall also has a department which covers hunting and stray animals in the campo. You can be stopped and given a warning for walking your dog without a lead -- even if you are walking on a track. New Mum in Town - Walking, Talking & Dolphins Well, when they say walking is a whole other ball game they most definitely were not joking! I thought crawling was keeping me fit, but walking is certainly keeping me on my toes and I think I may even be starting to beat the battle of the bulge! Hooray! Jelly belly, get ready to say adios! Little Jazmín is walking all over the place, getting in and out of all sorts of cubby holes and cupboards and chasing the dogs at every possible moment - they seem to take cover when little J is around...I wonder why? There's only so much ear and tail tugging even the most placid dogs can take - bless them, their world is very different. What must they make of it all?? Another change - all ornaments and anything anti-baby has been moved to higher, out of reach levels, so now I can't find anything!

We had a brilliant time, and I particularly loved the full night's sleep that followed...just shows that no siesta and non-stop action is the only way to make a (my) baby sleep all night -- that and a Calpol Soothe and Ease Plugin. Calpol – what a wonderful product! As much as I loved the new-born experience (yes, including the lows), I have to admit, I'm really excited about the fun times ahead with my little toddler, and I'm glad to have my boobs back. I'm no longer Jazmín's walking, human cow!

We have reached the present day and baby girl is now 15 months old. She is starting to blab a few words in Spanglish, but mainly in English. Her favourite thing to tell me is NOOOOO no no no...mmmm, where could she have got that from, I wonder?? Note to self - I must be extra aware of what I say, as little J is imitating everything. I'm especially grateful to Granddad for repeatedly using a naughty word (despite being told off) and baby girl continuously repeating shi...shi...shi...(think you can guess the bad word)! I just correct her with the word fish! Er hem...

It's going to be fun and I predict a lorra lorra laughs (as well as the odd tear and tantrum, claro)... Until next month x

The car journey there is a challenge in itself, and there are only so many nursery rhymes an adult can take I'm sure, but we made it and baby girl loved it. Walks in the campo with the poochies, trips to shopping centres that were actually full of people (a different world compared to Almuñecar) and, most exciting of all, we went to the Selwo Marina in Benalmadena. I definitely recommend it to all you families looking for day trips with the kiddies. It's not too big, yet not too small, and there's a good choice of food. Jazmín absolutely loved it and we were both clapping and cheering away at the dolphins as they jumped about and showed

A New Law! A new law comes into force on June 1 requiring all properties for sale or rent to have an energy performance certificate, which must include information on the energy efficiency of the property. The aim is to enable people to assess and compare the propertiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; energy efficiency. The certificate must identify the building, including its catastral reference, and show its energy performance. It must also describe the building's energy characteristics such as heating systems, lighting, etc. The certificate is valid for 10 years. Owners will not need a new one unless they renovate or change the property in any way. If the energy certificate is not given to purchasers or tenants, any contract will be considered null and void. Exclusions to this are: 1) Residential buildings with a surface area less than 50m2. 2) Residential buildings which are used or in-

tended to be used for either less than four months of the year or alternatively, for a limited annual time of use and with an expected energy consumption of less than 25% of what would be the result of all-year use. If you are buying a property in Spain, you should be aware that the original energy performance certificate must be handed over to you, and if you are renting, you should be provided with a copy of it. Salares

Salares, is situated on the very edge of the Tejeda National Park and Game reserve at 579 metres above sea level. This white gem of a village is steeped in history and was inhabited by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians. Known as Salaria Bastitanorum by the Romans (due to the salt beds that were once situated close by) the urban design of this tiny village has changed little since Muslim times. Built on a hill and constructed with short, steep streets there is not really a main square as such and you need to be fit to live there, but you can stretch your limbs by using the free outdoor gymnasium equipment before climbing up to the Parish Church of Santa Ana, built in Mudejar style on the site of an ancient mosque. It is quite remarkable, and well worth the climb! The tower minaret from the former mosque was built of red brick sometime between the thirteenth and fourteenth century and was used when the church was constructed in the sixteenth century. This minaret was designated a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 1979 and is considered to be one of the best examples in spain of Almohade art. The Romans occupation of the village has mainly gone unnoticed, apart from the bridge, as Arab rule left its notable mark in the layout

of the village as well as the fortress under which the village was built. It is situated close to the church and one of its towers can still be seen today. Unlike other villages in the area, no lives were lost in the earthquake of 1884 although many buildings were destroyed and the royal commissioner who was in charge of evaluating the damage granted 30,000 pesetas to help the villagers replace their belongings and rebuild their homes. The flattest street is Calle Puente which leads to the Roman bridge that straddles the Rio Salares. There is a little supermarket at the top close to the new restaurant and a bar at the bottom on the main road. There is also a health centre, open a couple of days a week, on days when it is closed villagers have to go on up to the next village of Sedella or to the much larger village of CĂłmpeta. The main fair in the village takes place during September when the cooler weather commences and the entire village dresses up in traditional Moorish clothing for the two day As-Shark or Al-Sarq festival. Dancers and musicians from North Africa dance and play all through the night and are illuminated by torchlight. Other festivals are held on January 17th (San Anton) and June 24th (San Juan) the Feria of Salares is in late July. The best way to get to Salares is via the Mediterranean Autovia A-7 or N-340, turn off at Algarrobo and drive inland up past the village, past the next village of Sayalonga, up towards CĂłmpeta, take the right hand turn to Archez and then turn left at the bridge, drive over the bridge and take the next right turn to Salares. The village is about another 5 minute drive from there. This should take 30 mins from leaving the motorway.

When we meditate on Love, it’s the same idea, however, as we’re focusing solely on Love, the other thoughts empty by themselves, with no real effort on our part. Instead of thinking no thoughts, we’re actually thinking only loving thoughts. This is much easier to achieve if you have a partner who you love, or even if you have a parent, child or sibling who you love. If you have a partner then try sitting or lying with him / her. Look into each others eyes and be completely present as you focus solely on love and loving. Before long you will begin to feel at One with your partner and at this point you’ve successfully achieved what I call, Loveitation; essentially Love and Meditation combined. Think of it as a new recipe, out now for all to try! The wonderful thing, when we get into this blissful state, is that it’s the ultimate state of allowing, literally paving the way for doors to open and greater abundant and joyful opportunities to flow in to our life. Apparently, police were once called to a remote rural location close to Reed's home in the early hours of the morning, due to complaints that a number of naked men had been seen running across fields. Monday morning. He was very helpful and said he would visit later that morning – YES the same day!!! Just before mid-day he arrived and set about analysis of the problem. He very quickly noted that the tank had been installed completely wrongly by the original Spanish builder and then told me exactly what he would need to do and gave me a quotation on the spot that was unbelievably reasonable. I said that was fine and ,fearing the worst, asked when he may be able to do the work?

lives up to the lavishness of its material. Beneath the veil of its wealth, power and treachery, the film is a love story. One where the lover lives his present through his past and never lets go. Performances are strictly average, but you can't really blame the cast for looking so morose and sounding out of breath at times. DiCaprio's constant whispering in Mulligan's ears gets a bit creepy towards the end. Mulligan is a pretty face, but here she looks tired, almost as if suffocating underneath all those heavy gowns and embellished dresses. The length and pace of the second half makes watching the film a tedious experience. Yes, it is stylish and there is colour and shimmer in every frame, but as the end credits roll all that you remember are Jay-Z and Lana Del Rey's melodic verses. Badly-designed steps create a psychological barrier, making you feel they are too much of an effort to bother with unless you have no choice There are three main things to remember when designing and building steps: where they are to go; how and from what materials they are built and how they are tied in with any walls, paths or terracing. Where they go will dictate the way you want to move through the garden. Steps, of course, give access to different levels within the garden and make them more usable. Moving Story The story of the portrait of Julie I was emailed by a lady in Idaho USA, who had visited my website, loved my paintings, and requested me to paint a portrait of a young girl, her step-daughter, called Julie. She had gone on to Google searching for portrait painters and had found my web address. I replied that I would be delighted and asked her to send me photographs of Julie. She duly sent me a photograph which was a favourite of her husband, Julie`s father.

I told Adair that the photograph wasn't really clear enough to make a good portrait and did she have another. Adair sent me this photograph which I felt that I could use. I thought the facial close-up would be the best for me. The painting had to be small to go in a very special place. This painting became extremely special to me because of the story of Julie. This little girl had died of leukemia at 12 years old, 31 years ago. I had lost my little grand-daughter Annabel, from brain cancer 10 years ago, at the age of 6 years, and therefore understood how important this painting was, apart from being a gift to Julie's father from Adair, his wife. So I duly bought the appropriate size canvas and started painting. I really worked on the portrait but I could not get a true likeness. I tried and tried, changing this and changing that but it would not come. In exasperation I left that attempt, bought another canvas and started again. Still I couldn't get a good like-

ness. It was as if something was stopping me. I said Â´Julie, come to me' but no. I came up with a finished painting but was not at all happy with it so I discarded the second attempt. I couldn't understand it, I have done a lot of portraits and in all of them I got a good likeness at the first attempt. I felt that something was really stopping me. I remember Adair telling me that Julie's Grandmother said after I had sent them a photo of the start of the first painting, could I make her smiling, as she was always smiling. So I decided to change tack. I bought another canvas and drew up and proceeded to paint the portrait of Julie smiling, the smaller image in the photograph. The painting just flowed along brilliantly, had more colour and more life. When it was finished I was very pleased with the result. The conclusion I came to was that Julie came to me and prevented me from doing the serious, wistful portrait. She wanted her father to have a painting of her smiling. To remember her as she always was with a beautiful cheeky grin. I feel very privileged to have been asked to paint this, very important, portrait and to have experienced Julie's influence in the finished painting. Bill deservedly won a world wide award for his Legion work for, "Making a Difference Overseas" this was given at the National Conference in the U.K. Glenys as Treasurer has enjoyed her time in office but after a spate of illness has decided to step down. At the meeting Bill handed over the reins to the new Chairman Alan Braisher and to the new Treasurer David Roy, stating that they are now looking forward to a rest and doing more travelling knowing that the Branch has been left in safe hands.

The little old lady went home, picked up her cat and brought it back to the store. They sold her the cat food. The next day, she tried to buy two cans of dog food. A lot of old people buy dog food to eat, but the management wants proof that you are buying the dog food for your dog." So she went home and brought in her dog. She then was able to buy the dog food. The next day she brought in a box with a hole in the lid. The little old lady asked the cashier to stick her finger in the hole. The cashier said, "No, you might have a snake in there." The little old lady assured her that there was nothing in the box that would harm her. So the cashier put her finger into the box and quickly pulled it out.
