m Fro Ed... the A very ‘warm’ — or should I say ‘hot’ — welcome to the month of June. This is the month many of us have been waiting for, plus it’s my favourite month of the year as it’s the start of all the fiestas, parties and long, warm evenings on the beach — all of which I can partake in now because in a week or so there will be no more school! As I sit for the first time this year on my sunbed writing this editorial, the cold, wet winter seems like a distant memory. I can hear the birds singing and the sun is beaming down with not a cloud in sight…. what utter bliss (and yes I know, I know — before too much longer, we’ll all be complaining that it’s TOO hot. Hey ho, it’s a cross we have to bear but in the meantime, let’s soak it up!) However, as I slap lashings of sun protection factor 50 on my body, preparing for an hour slot in the sun, I gasp with fear at how pasty and white I am. Shock, horror… have I left my sunbathing too late? Will I have to be seen in public looking like I have lived in Antarctica for the past decade? And not only that, but where have all these extra pounds appeared from? I’m sure I had no idea they’ve been secretly growing under my jumper all winter… Summer seems to just creep up on me and no doubt all of you too. One minute it’s jumpers and coats and the next it’s as little as possible — if anything at all! Since Christmas I have been telling myself I must do some form of exercise to keep the pounds at bay. Well, finally — five months later — I’ve attended a circuit training class with fitness instructor Chantelle at Just Dance in Torre del Mar (located next to the ‘Irish Rover Bar’ in El Copo). I thought the class was going to be a living nightmare and, well, the first session certainly seemed to be, but it couldn’t have been all that bad as I have since been back for more! Pain means gain (and no, that means gaining good health and NOT pounds!) … right? So onward and upward I

Strange News must go in order to continue my quest for a toned, tanned body! Let’s just hope I haven’t left it too late this year to shift the pounds and get a glowing beach body tan for my first event of the summer — a birthday celebration boat trip on 8th June! (Ed’s note — OK, note to self — don’t be silly, of course you haven’t. Get a grip, girl!) Well ... I can but hope! Oh and anyone looking to do a little bit of exercise each week, turn to page 95 for a handy tip :) So until next month, have a truly fab start to the summer which we’ve all been waiting for — and, of course, as always enjoy the read and support our loyal advertisers if you can!

Midair pinch and punch A father and daughter have been playing the same prank on each other for the last 15 years, but it seems the Dad might have won the battle. Bridie Connell and her dad have been locked in a battle of 'pinch and a punch, first day of the month' but it recently escalated to the next level. Bridie, now an actress who now lives in Melbourne, was on a three-hour flight back home to New Zealand for her cousin's birthday, and was plotting how best to get her dad. Except, he managed to get in there first. Bridie had just been moved to a better seat and was settling in when a flight attendant, Beau, approached her with an envelope. "I opened it and silently screamed,” said Bridie. “It wasn’t a real upgrade at all. The letter read: To my most beloved daughter. I do hope you’re sitting back reclining comfortably. I can’t wait to see you, but remember … pinch and a punch for the first of the month, no returns!” Well played, Bridie's dad, well played. Not-so-pretty Polly? An heroic parrot — named Freddy after Freddie Krueger — has somehow survived being kidnapped from a zoo, wounded in a police shoot-out and bitten by a snake. He is still alive — though he is now blind in one eye — and no doubt has a lot of stories to tell. His most recent ordeal was in the southern Brazilian city of Cascavel, when he was stolen from the zoo. Local newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported that several days later, Freddy mysteriously appeared again close to his enclosure, with only a few blood spots on him to give a clue about what had happened. Vet Ilha Dettoni told the paper it could have been his “pecks at the bad guys”. He is being kept away from the other birds as a precaution in case he turns violent. The publication said Freddy had been bitten by a non-venomous snake just a week before the robbery, and was still in the recovery phase. “He’s a bit of a wild one,’ added Dettoni.

Strange News (Continued) Watch the birdie A fake speed camera in a Devon village is actually a bird box in disguise, but is credited with saving both human and avian lives. Drivers are being tricked into slowing down by the yellow box, believed to have been erected in Kilkhampton by a twitcher. With its distinct bright colours and placement next to the road, it looks pretty realistic. It has received a lot of support from people who drive through the village on the A39 but so far, no-one has admitted putting it there. The box has little holes where you would normally find the lens, along with another five holes and perches for birds to get in and out. A motorist said: ‘It’s actually more effective than the speed sign further down the road.’

Where to, madam? A drunk woman ended up with more than just a hangover the next morning when she accidentally booked an Uber to Newcastle. Helen Dryden, 25, had been out drinking with friends in Shoreditch, London, and wanted to get back to her home in Guildford, a trip which should have cost about £80. Unfortunately, she had forgotten to update the ‘home’ settings in her app, so that it still said Newcastle — which is where she went to university. She fell asleep in the car, and didn’t realise anything was wrong until the driver woke her up close to Milton Keynes to check she was sure she wanted to go on such a long trip. The driver then did a U-turn and took her 75 miles back – with the whole trip costing £275 in total. Helen said: ‘I couldn’t believe it. I ended up getting home at about 4am and feel so embarrassed. I was a bit too drunk and just fell asleep. ‘I’m supposed to be getting more responsible as I get older but it’s not happening so far.’

Interesting Facts... Myanmar is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. Yangon (formerly Rangoon). Myanmar was known as Burma until 1989 when the military junta renamed the country Myanmar. The capital, Rangoon, became Yangon. Several days of demonstrations followed but the name has stuck. Burma was part of the British Empire from the mid-19th century. It was also occupied by Japan during the Second World War before gaining independence in 1948. In 2006, the capital city was moved, rebuilt and named Nay Pyi Taw. The purpose-built city has a 20-lane highway, golf courses, fast wifi and reliable electricity. The only thing it doesn’t have is people: the population is just 924,608 compared with Yangon’s 7,360,703! Myanmar is one of only three countries in the world that has not adopted the metric system of measurement. The other two holdouts are Liberia and the United States.

Meetings with parents, dropping off, picking up, after school activities... the list is endless! Currencies Direct News Pound reacts to BoE & Brexit, EUR fluctuates as German growth forecasts slashed Staying up to date with the latest currency news can help you time your transfers effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks… Latest currency news The pound resumed its slide once again at the beginning of May after fighting back at the end of April. Over the past two weeks GBP/EUR has trended between a high of €1.17 and a low of €1.15. Meanwhile, GBP/USD has showed a similar trend, moving between lows of US$1.28 and a high of US$1.31. Over the same period, EUR/GBP ranged between £0.84 and £0.86, while EUR/USD fluctuated between US$1.11 and US$1.13. What’s been happening? Brexit headlines are still rocking the pound, with markets left generally unimpressed at the date of Brexit being delayed until 31 October as it means for uncertainty is now in store. The pound has continued to make losses at the start of May following the Bank of England’s (BoE) interest rate decision. The bank left interest rates unchanged as policymakers agreed that the current Brexit uncertainty meant it was too early to raise them. Nevertheless, BoE Governor Mark Carney hinted that an interest rate hike may be forthcoming earlier than markets were currently expecting, which provided the pound with at least a bit of support. Following this, Brexit pessimism weighed on the pound as there were further calls for the

Prime Minister’s resignation. Meetings with Sir Graham Brady, Chair of the 1922 Conservative Committee, hinted at the suggestion Theresa May could set a date for her resignation this month. The European Commission then slashed its growth forecasts for two of the largest economies in the Eurozone bloc – Germany and Italy – when a report revealed that Germany’s economy was only predicted to expand by 0.5% in 2019. What do you need to look out for? Over the next few weeks, the euro will likely be responsive to GDP growth data from both Germany and the Eurozone as a whole. Meanwhile, the pound could rise against the euro if inflation data improves and hits the Bank of England’s 2% target. Any positive Brexit developments, with signs that the UK is closer to reaching a cross-party Brexit deal, will likely buoy Sterling this month. At Currencies Direct we’re here to talk currency whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news or how it could impact your currency transfers. Fun Things To do In The Summer Months The Summer is long here in Spain and it can sometimes be a drain on one’s patience so here is a list of fun things to partake in this Summer... Go to the beach and build a sandcastle, there are plenty of beaches to choose from. The best for sandcastle making in my opinion is just down the coast a little, in El Morche. Hire a boat for a full day, half day or just a couple of hours. Have hours of fun looking for dolphins, dive, eat, drink, or just chill and relax taking in the wonderful views that surround you. Boat trips are available from Caleta de Velez Marina with CostaBoatTrips.com or from Marina del Este with Sailnplay.com Collect stones and shells from the beach and make some crazy pictures and sentences in the sand. Take a picnic and a minibar to the beach just as the sun is going down. Take some music

and have fun with some friends. Go to the aquapark - Aquavelis in Torre del Mar located opposite El Ingenio shopping centre it’s a great day out for all the family. See advert on page 59 for a discount voucher. If you have children, then why not enrol them in The International Kids Summer Camp which is based in Trilingo Idiomas in Velez-Malaga. It’s during July & August from 10am - 2pm. For further info call Donna or Mark on: 951 768 175 or 679 792 329. See main advert on page 36.

Random Jokes :) A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, “Everyone who thinks you’re stupid, stand up!” After a few seconds, Little Johnny stood up. A-Z Of Spain Following on from The Sentinella’s journey through the alphabet to discover the joys of Spain. This month we bring you L and M combined. Lemons - Along with olive oil and garlic if you want to cook like the Spanish add lemons to the shopping list. Kick start the morning by drinking pure lemon juice diluted with water. It provides all the vitamin C you need for the day, plus if you want to lose weight watch the pounds drop off. Lidl - A supermarket where it is damn hard to spend more than 30€ in one go as everything is so cheap and cheerful.

Legumbres - Pulses, the original ‘slow food’ are a staple part of the Mediterranean diet. they are mostly eaten at home although expect to find lentils or haricot bean stew as the starter on a menu. Madrid - The cosmopolitan city of Madrid has been the capital of Spain since 1562 and it is located on the geographic centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Because of its central location and high altitude, the climate of Madrid is characterised by warm dry summers and cool winters. Madrid is a city packed with great monuments. Among its highlights are the medieval centre dating back to the Habsburg Empire and the Prado Museum. But Madrid is not just a cultural destination. It is also a lively metropolis with many pubs, cafes, discotheques and nightclubs open into the early hours of the morning. Many visitors come in search of old-school tapas bars and are surprised to find a gastronome’s paradise. Some will be drawn to the late-night buzz and find that mooching around cafes in the afternoon is just as enjoyable. A business centre, headquarters for the

Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid also plays a major role in both the banking and industrial sectors. Most of its industry is located in the Southern part of the city, where textile, food and metal factories are clustered. Merienda - Translates as ‘afternoon snack’. Around 6pm the Spanish once again have a hunger pang and relieve it by visiting cafes and bars for coffee with toast and jam, croissants, toasted sarnies, chunks of cake, or chocolate con churros. Fattening stuff. Mosquitoes - Come summer when we swap trousers and jeans for skirts and shorts we find ourselves getting bitten to shreds by those nasty blood-sucking mosquitoes. The name mosquito is Spanish for ‘little fly’ and applies to any member of the insect family. Culicidae is a group that comprises of some 3,000 species over virtually the entire earth. They belong to the Diptera, the great order of flies. In this order there are many species of insects in which both the males and females feed on blood; however, among mosquitoes, only the females consume blood. Mañana - This is every true Spaniard’s favourite word. Very seldom do the Spanish like doing things “today”, you always have to wait for at least three ‘mañanas’. That is why they are so laid back and not nearly as stressed as us ‘must do everything right now’ Brits. When they say “mañana por la manana” it means “tomorrow morning”. But don’t count on it!  Mango - One of only a select few of Spanish ladies fashion shops here where the clothes don’t fall apart after a few washes. You have the delicious fruit called Mangoes too.

Release Date: 21st June Director: Josh Cooley Screenplay: Lee unkrich, Rashida Jones, andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, Will McCormack, Stephany Folsom Producers: Jonas Rivera, Mark Nielsen Production companies: Pixar, Walt Disney Pictures all the Toy Story films have been fabulous and this one no doubt will be just as funny. When a new toy called "Forky" joins Woody, (voice of Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim allen), their new kid owner, Bonnie and the rest of the gang they embark on an adventurous road trip leading them to a funfair which tuns into an unexpected reunion when Woody makes a slight detour and

bumps into his long-lost friend Bo Peep. as they discuss the good old days and after years of being separated they soon realise that they’re worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy. They learn that there may be more to life than belonging to a kid but they soon come to find that's the least of their worries. all your favourites are back – Woody, Buzz and Jessie will return, alongside the likes of Slinky Dog, Rex, Hamm, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Barbie, and Ken. If the last two films are anything to go by, then it will cause emotional meltdowns! Not only that, but Tim allen and Tom Hanks have both been on record speaking about how touching the ending of Toy Story 4 is. “I gotta resist getting emotional. I don’t want to give it away, but this is an incredibly great story,” allen said on american show The Talk. “It is so emotional, it’s so funny, it’s so big, the idea they’ve come up with, I’m startled. I couldn’t even get through the last scene.” Star Rating - One to find out!

s Now m b e l Ce en & s Bola Th Jame Prolific Geordie actor James Bolam was born on June 16, 1935, in Sunderland, Tyne-and-Wear, and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He was roommates with Marc Bolan in the '60s, and was the true inspiration for Marc Bolan's name — not Bob Dylan as reported. Bolam found widespread fame through his work on When the Boat Comes In (1976), The Likely Lads (1976) and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962). One of his most popular roles was as Jack Halford in the TV series New Tricks. He left the series in 2012. According to Monica Dickens' autobiography "An Open Book", Bolam — who was then a keen horseman — brought her novel "Cobbler's Dream" to the attention of Yorkshire Television, leading to the TV series Follyfoot (1971). He also played Roy Figgis in Only When I Laugh, Trevor Chaplin in The Beiderbecke Trilogy, Dr Arthur Gilder in Born and Bred and most recently, the title character of Grandpa in the CBeebies programme Grandpa in My Pocket. The revived series, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, chronicled the further adventures of Bob and Terry, and lasted for two series which were broadcast in 1973 and 1974. The duo also made a 45-minute 1974 Christmas Eve special. Bolam's co-star Rodney Bewes revealed in 2005 that the two actors had not spoken since the film had been made, a period of over 30 years, however Bolam denied there

was a rift when Bewes died in November 2017. Other work included Second Thoughts (as Bill MacGregor) from 3 May 1991 to 14 October 1994 alongside the late Linda Bellingham, Midsomer Murders, Pay and Display, Dalziel and Pascoe and Close and True. Another memorable role was alongside Timothy West and Sheila Hancock in the 2002 series of the BBC comedy-drama Bedtime, in which Bolam played the seemingly decent but actually crooked Ronnie Stribling. In 2002, Bolam played the serial killer Harold Shipman in Shipman, the ITV adaptation of Brian Masters' book on the case, Prescription for Murder, and Harold Wilson, the former Prime Minister, in the 2006 BBC documentary The Plot Against Harold Wilson. In 2009 he played Ken Lewis, CEO of the Bank of America, in the television dramatisation The Last Days of Lehman Brothers. Bolam’s appearances on the London stage include Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell by Keith Waterhouse and Ben Elton's play, Gasping. In 1974, he appeared in a novel production of 'Macbeth' at The Young Vic, in which the lead role was shared by Bolam and two other actors. He was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services to drama. Bolam continues to work in the theatre as well as on television. During spring 2015, he appeared in the play Bomber's Moon by William Ivory at the Park Theatre, Finsbury Park, London. He is married to actress Susan Jameson — who played the wife of his colleague Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) in New Tricks — and they have a daughter, Lucy, and two grandchildren. The couple live in Wisborough Green, Sussex, and Bolam has appeared in a video protesting against oil drilling near the village.

The Daily Star claims the celebrity coach thinks it's time to hand in her notice to ITV ahead of the next series, after leaving the American version last year. A source told the paper: "Jennifer has absolutely loved her time on The Voice but she’s decided not to return. “It wasn’t an easy decision. She would love to continue doing the show. But she has a lot on and something had to give." JHud joined the show in 2017 working alongside Olly Murs, Sir Tom Jones and Will.I.Am. But after the last series ended, the 37-year-old hinted that she could struggle to fit in filming the new set of hopefuls. Will.I.Am and Sir Tom are the only original coaches left on The Voice. Kyle off air The Jeremy Kyle Show has been axed after a guest died shortly after filming. ITV confirmed the episode wouldn’t be aired. A spokesman said: “Given the seriousness of this event, ITV has decided to suspend both filming and broadcasting of The Jeremy Kyle Show with immediate effect in order to give it time to conduct a review of this episode of the show.’ Every episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show has also been removed from the ITV Hub. An industry insider told The Sun: “It’s everyone’s worst nightmare, and something that is taken extremely seriously by all involved. “Jeremy and the team are extremely proud of the show and the aftercare which guests receive, and in 14 years on air there has never been an incident like this.” The show has been a staple on the ITV daytime schedule since its launch in 2005.

Piers caught in The Chase Piers Morgan has recalled a cringeworthy moment while filming an episode of The Chase with Good Morning Britain co-presenter Susanna Reid. The presenter revealed that the studio audience booed him when he came onto the stage, and things got worse from there on as he struggled through the first round with “the intellectual firepower of a Love Island contestant.” Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, he said: “I can’t say exactly what happened because the episode doesn’t air until November. But I can disclose that I suffered the single worst moment of my entire 15-year career in live television at the start of my Cash Builder round (where contestants get £1,000 for every correct answer to rapid-fire questions) when my brain froze so badly I felt sweat bursting through every pore and my innards started to self-combust with terror.” Piers put his poor performance down to a combination of a 4am start for GMB and being jet-legged after a three-week break in America.

Film legend Doris Day has died aged 97, surrounded by close friends. According to an official statement, she had been in excellent physical health for her age, until she contracted a severe case of pneumonia. The actress was best known for her roles in Calamity Jane, Move Over, Darling, Pillow Talk and The Man Who Knew Too Much, with her film career spanning 20 years. She was also a huge TV star thanks to her CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show, which ran from 1968 until 1973, and was a successful singer. The star was best known for her squeaky clean image, but after appearing in Pillow Talk and two other films with Rock Hudson, Doris said she “caught up with the contemporary in me.” In her 1976 autobiography Doris Day: Her Own Story, she wrote: “I have the unfortunate reputation of being Miss Goody Two-Shoes, America’s Virgin and all that, so I’m afraid it’s going to shock some people for me to say this, but I staunchly believe no two people should get married until they have lived together.”

Spain’s First Outdoor Skydiving Simulator... ...opens in the Malaga Province On the 1st of May, Spain’s first outdoor skydiving simulator opened in the Malaga province, offering kids and adults the chance to safely enjoy the thrill of flying. This is a very special piece of equipment, as it was used by Tom Cruise to prepare for his skydiving stunts on Mission Impossible: Fallout, before being brought over to Spain. A skydiving simulator allows visitors to fly on a column of air, without a parachute. It simulates the freefall portion of a skydive, and is an addictive, exciting and thrilling experience. It's the perfect way to find out what skydiving feels like without jumping from an aeroplane. Located at KartCenter Campillos in the Malaga province, Fly4Real’s outdoor simulator is an exciting new addition to the tourist attractions in the area and the very first of its kind in Spain. Due to its location, thrill-seekers can experience a day of adrenaline and excitement by combining the

skydiving simulator with karting at Andalusia’s longest kart track. Tickets can be bought online on their website www.fly-4-real.com and transport is available from the Costa del Sol.

Exercise Time! Serious exercise for the over-50s I came across this exercise suggested to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders. It seems so easy, so I thought I’d pass it on. The article suggested doing it three days a week. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface where you have plenty of room each side. With a 2lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, then relax. Each day, you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 5lb potato bag. Then 25lb potato bags, and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 50lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. Once you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the bags. Happy work out :)

Kids Talk Childrens’ views on marriage and all that other boring adult stuff.. How do you decide who to marry?  1. You’ve got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports and she should keep the chips and dip coming. Alan, age 10 2. No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with. Kristen, age 10 What is the right age to get married? 1. 23 is the best age because you know the person forever by then. Camille, age 10 2. No age is good to get married at. You’ve got to be a fool to get married. Freddie, age 6 How can a stranger tell if two people are married? 1. You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. Derrick, age 8 What do most people do on a date? 1. Dates are for having fun and people should never use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough. Lynette, age 8 2. On the first date they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. Martin, age 10 What would you do on a first date that was turning sour?  1. I’d run home and play dead. The next day I would call the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns. Craig, age 9

When is it okay to kiss someone? 1. When they’re rich. Pam, age 7 2. The law says that you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that. Curt, age 7 3. The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It’s the right thing to do. Howard, age 8 Is it better to be single or married?  1. I don’t know which is better, but i’ll tell you one thing, I’m never going to have sex with my wife. I don’t want to be all grossed out. Theodore, age 11 2. It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. Anita, age 9 How would the world be different if people didn’t get married?  1. There sure would be a lot of kids to explain wouldn’t there? Kelvin, age 8 How would you make a marriage work? 1. Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a truck. Ricky, age 10

The doctor had basically told him there was nothing more to be done with his injury other than surgery. This injury can occur in any tendon and is due to years of repetitive strain. If the tendonitis is left untreated, examples like tennis elbow, golfers elbow and in my client´s case achilles tendonitis, the scar tissue surrounding the tendon calcifies. This can cause a bone deposit that leads to extreme restriction of movement and pain, also known as calcific tendonitis.

My client wanted to avoid surgery and so I combined massage, friction, ultrasound, stretching and ice therapy in my treatments. The bone deposit has now disappeared and my client is happy to be back walking and enjoying a pain and restriction free leg. Unspoilt Andalusia Beautiful places – Cortijo Las Perdices – there’s more to Frigiliana than tourists Sometimes one comes across a gem of a property. Recently, I was lucky enough to find Cortijo Las Perdices. When the owners told me it was in Frigiliana, I was unsure of whether to consider taking it on. Not that I have anything against this wonderfully beautiful village, which I love and have very fond memories of when we first visited it in 1995, (that ‘chorizo al inferno’ with a glass of vino del terreno, at the top of the village as we watched the sun disappear below the sea line turning the water to gold, is engraved in my mind forever), but I tend to shy away from the over touristy areas. Frigiliana’s 20th century history has always fascinated me (read Peter Baird’s “Between Two Fires” and you will never look upon the village in the same light again!) But now it seems to be lost in a never ending cycle of capturing tourists and making money, rather than being just a little Andalusian village, just existing.

But I am so glad I went to see Cortijo Las Perdices. Hidden on a river valley hillside, out in the countryside 15 minutes beyond the village, one would never know that all that tourism thing was going on just down the road. Here, life stands still, the birdsong dominates and the sun rises and sinks, and the countryside is just wonderful, natural countryside. Here is a place to hide, a place to relax, to get away from everything, to breath, to just exist! The cortijo is so pretty, full of character, with wonderful beams, and original floors, beautifully and carefully renovated, but in a simple, country style, nothing lavish, nothing too shiny, nothing out of keeping! I am limited to 300 words, so I cannot write more, but it’s available to purchase, and will make someone a beautiful home. By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advertisement below)

Turmeric, a member of the ginger family, is commonly used as a spice — and is the colouring for many Indian curries — but it is also known for its medicinal purposes. Recently, science has started to back up what Indians have known for a long time — it really does contain compounds with medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. This has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. Scientists now believe that chronic, low-level inflammation plays a major role in almost every chronic Western disease. This includes heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer's and various degenerative conditions. Curcumin matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs — but without the side effects. It blocks NF-kB, a molecule that travels into the nuclei of your cells and turns on genes related to inflammation. NF-kB is believed to play a major role in many chronic diseases. It is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure. In addition, curcumin boosts the activity of your body's own antioxidant enzymes. Curcumin also boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), linked to improved brain function and a lower risk of brain diseases. Back in the day, it was believed that neurons weren't able to divide and multiply after early childhood. However, it’s now known that this does happen. Curcumin should also lower your risk of heart disease, the number one cause of death in the world. Perhaps its main benefit is improving the function of the endothelium, which is the lining of your blood vessels. It’s well known that endothelial dysfunction is a major driver of heart disease and involves an

inability of your endothelium to regulate blood pressure, blood clotting and various other factors. Turmeric can help prevent — and perhaps even treat — cancer. There are many different forms of cancer, but many have factors in common. Curcumin has been found to affect cancer growth, development and spread at the molecular level. Studies have shown that it can contribute to the death of cancerous cells and reduce angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels in tumours) and metastasis (spread of cancer). However, there is also evidence that it may prevent cancer from occurring in the first place — especially cancers of the digestive system such as colorectal cancer. In a 30-day study in 44 men with lesions in the colon that sometimes turn cancerous, 4 grams of curcumin per day reduced the number of lesions by 40%. Arthritis patients have also responded very well to curcumin supplements. Given that curcumin is a potent anti-inflammatory compound, it makes sense that it may help with this condition. Curcumin has also shown some promise in treating depression. In a controlled trial, 60 people with depression were randomised into three groups. One group took Prozac, another group one gram of curcumin and the third group both Prozac and curcumin. After six weeks, curcumin had led to improvements that were similar to Prozac. The group that took both Prozac and curcumin fared best.

Dear Penny Agony Aunt Penny gives readers, advice, help and guidance through the minefield called life.

Dear Penny

My 16 year old son has become very withdrawn and gaunt looking lately. He used to like playing football with his friends and going to the gym, but now all he wants to do is go out late at night and not come in until the next day. I am worried that he may have got in with the wrong crowd and possibly taking drugs. He used to be a happy go lucky boy, but lately he sleeps a lot and always looks tired. Am I jumping to conclusions and how do I go about finding out the truth?  Worried mum, Andalucia Penny Says: Your son has reached the age where he is keen to discover new parts of life that he previously couldn’t. You say he has swapped football and the gym for going out late at night for long spells and this behaviour is not at all abnormal for lads at his age. Perhaps the late nights are the reason for him looking tired lately. However, let’s not forget that drug-taking is an escalating problem with youngsters of this age and to put your mind at rest try broaching the subject with him directly. His reaction will speak volumes and hopefully your mind will be put to rest.

Yours Penny

Wine: Sparkling Sensations The pretty alpine villages of Austria, plus the beautiful architecture of town and city buildings, are constantly admired by numerous visitors from worldwide origins. Lakes, mountains, glaciers and stunning landscapes attract many, too, as well as the history of Austria. The cuisine of Austria has become well known and appreciated, along with very impressive high quality wines the country has to offer, a great number of which are (multi) award-winning productions.

sparkling wines. Seafood, fish dishes and white meats, including poultry, plus pasta and rice, all have a great accompaniment and partnership with the ‘sparklers’ and their wonderful perlages.

Austria grows 40 grape varieties (26 white, 14 red) that are officially approved for the production of their quality wines. International varieties include Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet, amongst numerous others. Austrian grape varieties include the much acclaimed Grüner Veltliner, which is now being planted, increasingly, in other countries.

Jahrgang Brut Reserve and Blanc De Noirs Brut Reserve will not disappoint. Refreshing, intense, fresh and fruity is how I would describe these productions. www.schlumberger.at

The ‘Quality Pyramid’ of Austria’s Sparkling wines has differing requirements, that are set out in a strict set of regulations, for each level, including varying maturation periods, ranging from 9 months to 30 months. Klassik, Reserve and Grosse (Grande) Reserve all have sparkling productions that are very popular indeed, with the latter two quality levels being known for their impressiveness, structure, elegance, bouquet, mouthfeel and palate sensation, particularly. A lot of cuisine enjoyment is enhanced by pairing with

Schlumberger has a network of cellars that hold many barrels and bottles of sparkling wines. Robert Alwin Schlumberger had productions in 1842 and very soon after the wines were presented and served at the Imperial Court. Klassik Brut, Chardonnay

Steininger has fabulous wines, too. Grüner Veltliner Steinhaus (Stone house) shows the character of this wine, which is derived from the soils. A superb example. www.weingut-steininger.at Weingut Moser and Weingut Müller both have impressive productions, also. Pure drinking pleasure is forthcoming from these companies’ wines. Respectively, www.moser-wein.at and www.weingutmueller.at have a wealth of information. Tastings and tours, of all the wineries, are very popular.

As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

) : a h a Jokes h 10-year old girl asks her mum: "Mummy, how was I born?” The mother smiles a replies: "Once upon a time, me and your daddy had a wonderful time so we decided to plant a little seed. Daddy put it in the earth and I took very good care of it every single day. After a while the seed started to grow more and more leaves and in a few months, the seed turned into a beautiful and healthy plant. So we took the plant, dried it, smoked it and then we got so high that we went mad all night like a pair of crazed wild beasts without a condom." ------------------------------------------------------------A massive fight broke out in my local petrol station last night. 23 people were arrested in Total. ------------------------------------------------------------Two parrots sat on a perch, one says 'Can you smell fish?' ------------------------------------------------------------Wife came home from work to find her husband watching the football. "I've decided I'm leaving you, all you do is talk about football. You think about nothing else," she said. "I'm also seeing someone else. He's younger than you, handsome, understanding, tender, treats me like a queen and does anything I ask." "Really?" the husband replies. "What football team does he support?" ------------------------------------------------------------Just got sacked on my first day as a builder. I was on top of the scaffolding telling the top of the house it was absolutely useless and it would never amount to anything. The boss came up and asked what I was doing. I said, "You told me to slate the roof." ------------------------------------------------------------I've just been through a security check at the airport and I was asked if I'd left my suitcase

unattended at any time? I said "Yes, its been in the attic for the last 10 months you idiot!" ------------------------------------------------------------I was at my local tennis club today and a young man came up to me and said "I'm a ball boy" I said "Are you? I'm more of a tit man myself but whatever floats your boat!" ------------------------------------------------------------Pauline at work accused me of being sexist yesterday because I always whistle at her when she walks into the office but I don't do the same when Frank walks in. So I have taken on board what she said and instead of whistling at her, today I greeted her with 'Morning!' and dipped my balls in her coffee when she wasn't looking, just like I did to Frank. This equality thing works better than I thought. ------------------------------------------------------------A man was shopping for a birthday present for his daughter in a toy shop. “Hello, I am looking for a Barbie doll, please,” he asked a shop assistant. "Which Barbie would that be, sir?" The man was confused. “Well, what ones do you have?” "We have Barbie Goes to the Gym for £19.95, Barbie Goes to the Ball for £19.95, Barbie Goes Shopping for £19.95, Barbie dates Badd Teddy for £19.95, Barbie Goes to the Beach for £19.95, Barbie Goes Night Clubbing for £19.95, Cyber Barbie for £19.95 and Divorced Barbie for £265.00." The man was bewildered when he heard the pricing of the last Barbie doll. "Why is Divorced Barbie priced so high when all the other Barbies are selling for £19.95?" "That's obvious." says the assistant, "Divorced Barbie comes with Ken's house, Ken's car, Ken's furniture and other things.”

Jokes h a ha :) A blonde teenager, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a "handy-woman" She started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighbourhood. She went to the front door of the first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do. "Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch," he said, "How much will you charge me?" Delighted, the girl quickly responded, "How about £50?" The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she would need was in the garage. The man's wife, hearing the conversation said to her husband, "Does she realise that our porch goes ALL the way around the house?" He responded, "That's a bit cynical, isn't it?" The wife replied, "You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes we've been getting by email lately." Later that day, the blonde teenager came to the door to collect her money. "You're finished already?" the startled husband asked. "Yes, she replied, and I even had paint left over, so I gave it two coats." Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the £50 and handed it to her along with a £1 tip. “And, by the way," the teenager added, "It's not a Porch, it's a Lexus." ------------------------------------------------------------A woman walked outside a doctor’s after being diagnosed with cancer. She was grieved but tried to compose herself in front of her daughter, who was waiting for her outside. She broke the news to her daughter by saying, “We women celebrate every bit of

news, whether good or bad. I hate to break it to you, but I have cancer. So, I want us to go to the club and have a Martini.” At the club, the mother-daughter duo shared a few Martinis between them and were starting to feel a bit sombre. After a while, a few friends of the woman approached them and eventually asked her what she was celebrating. The woman told them with a serious face, “I’ve just been diagnosed with AIDS.” Her friends were shocked, but they composed themselves and offered her their condolences. Soon after they left, the daughter asked the woman, “Mum, why did you tell them you have AIDS?” The woman turned to her daughter. “Because I don’t want any of them sleeping with your father after I’m gone.” ------------------------------------------------------------One day, a wife was preparing breakfast for her husband, when he suddenly burst into the kitchen and started instructing her. “Careful!” he screamed. “I said careful! Oh my god! Put in some butter as well, will you?” The wife was confused but she did not say anything. But the husband continued his rant, “You never listen to me. We need more butter! And where’s the salt? You never put enough salt in!” “Why don’t you listen to me? Turn them. Hurry up! Are you crazy? Have you lost your mind? And where’s the salt? Just put the salt in! You always forget them! Salt! Salt!” Now his wife was really mad at him. She snapped, “What is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?” The husband calmly replied, "I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving."
