This month there’s just one word on the brink of my lips….vegetables!
sales: kami - 664 210 468 Email:sales@thesentinella.com Distribution/Collections: tony - 664 689 138
Since three days before Christmas, when I suddenly decided to stop eating meat and become a vegetarian, images of carrots, peas, spinach and broccoli started to flash across my mind far more than usual. I guess that’s hardly surprising considering I now spend longer than ever before ogling the brightly-coloured produce in the fruit and veggie section of the supermarket.
Follow us on twitter @the_sentinella or @keidi_keating
But one day, as I loaded my trolley with a selection of the season’s offerings my mind wandered to how healthy this vegetarian label really was. I mean, with such a vast range of chemicals and pesticides lurking around on my veg, all kinds of potential diseases swam to the forefront of my befuddled mind. Then suddenly, out of the blue, the answer arrived.
Deposito Legal Ma-1435-2005
The moment of reckoning occurred during a casual chat with a man in a Torre café. He told me that his wife owned an allotment close to Velez Malaga, where she would disappear to every morning for a few hours to tend to her growths. He went on to reveal that the cost of the aforementioned allotment worked out to just €20 per month! ‘Hmmm, I’ll have one of them,’ I thought. I asked the man a few questions concerning the allotment, who said I’d be better off speaking to his wife. And so that afternoon I got on the blower and found out all there was to know about renting a plot of land near the El Ingenio shopping centre.

Then it hit me that I had no idea how to grow anything, having never before attempted such a task. The closest I’d got to growing anything was the sweet pea plant I took to school as a six-yearold. The sweet pea plant which never produced any peas….

From The Ed (cont)
Strange News Girl Survives 100ft Fall
Then I remembered that my sister, Kami, had only just started growing some veggies herself, after receiving a mini greenhouse type contraption for Christmas. So I asked her if she’d like to split the plot with me so we could share all the delights it threw our way. She jumped at the chance, especially considering that she had 132 cabbage plants ready to go, with no suitable land to plant them on!
A five-year-old girl had an amazing escape after she fell out of the window of a tenth floor flat, hit a ground floor awning and survived.
Neither of us fancied taking a spade and digging up the plot, so we got someone to do that part for us. All we had to do was shoot into the local garden centre on a sunny morning and make a few purchases, all ready to plant into the earthy soil. We even bought a cute little mandarin tree! Kami and I worked hard planting and as we slogged away Tony pulled up a chair and relaxed under the sun rays, only shifting off of it after a request by Kami to plant the strawberries!
Yan, a street vendor who saw what he initially thought was a red doll falling, said she made a loud bang when she hit the awning.
And so the journey begins. Thus far my personal attempts at growing a few veggies from seed (perched on the floor, just inside my balcony door) have proved somewhat disastrous. My chilli plant sadly passed away a few weeks ago. Cause of death; drowned! But my tomato plants are doing ok, I guess. They're not very tall yet though, so I'm wondeing if I have a dwarf variety. Well, in any case, let’s see if the vegetable plot yields some better results…look out for our monthly Vegetable Patch column, where you can read all the latest shenanigans...

Ye Zixu suffered only scratches and bruises in the 100ft fall from her family's flat in the Chinese city of Chongqing.
"I only realised it was a kid when somebody shouted that a child had fallen from a high window," he said. "We thought she couldn't possibly have survived - then we heard crying from the top of the awning." She was later transferred to the city's South West Hospital where doctors pronounced her fit and well. The Marathon Man A Belgian runner has set a new world record by completing a marathon every single day for a year. Stefaan Engels, aka Marathon Man, began his challenge in Belgium a year ago and has since run 365 marathons in seven different countries. He crossed his final finish line in Barcelona after running 15,000km (9,569 miles) in 12 months. Engels suffered from asthma as a child and had been told by doctors to avoid sport.

De Cotta Co-habitation – the myth of a common law marriage by Sandra Wrightson, Barrister Overseas & partner at De Cotta McKenna y Santafé In England now 39% of women between the ages of 25 and 29 and 44% of men between the ages of 30 and 34 are co-habiting. These are the bare statistics but with increases in the number of people choosing to live together and not to marry the legal problems if there is a separation are sadly increasing. Spanish lawyers will often advise couples to register their partnership as a pareja de hecho – couple by fact – so that they can benefit from legal and tax advantages. In England no such concept exists and a couple who have been living together for many years may need to rely on the traditional law of trusts to prove they have rights to property or assets. There is no such thing as a common law marriage! For example a man or woman may be the legal title holder to property but their partner may have contributed to the up-
keep and mortgage for many years. If they then split up how does the partner prove their contribution and get any equity they need out of the property? Family lawyers in England are now being advised to await a Supreme Court decision to be made in May when an appeal in a case called Kernott v Jones will be heard. This is because previous cases based on trust principles have led to uncertainty as to the interpretation of “common intention” when a couple live in a property together and are not married. Put simply was there an intention to enter into a form of joint enterprise and ownership in respect of the property? The Supreme Court is expected to give guidance on the future interpretation of the law which will allow lawyers to advise their clients who may have a claim to all or part of a property that is not legally registered in their name. As English lawyers working in Spain we see a number of people who are in this situation with property registered in Spain. Spanish and English lawyers need to work together to see if a solution can be found in this type of case as the English legal concept of trusts is not always recognised in this country. If you are living together it is sensible to ensure that you do know what the position would be if you separated and prevention is always better than cure! "The same trust principles would be applied to a same sex couple who have not entered into a Civil Partnership in England.” Finally on a happier note one other statistic the number of divorces in England is at a 29 year low. Sandra Wrightson is a Barrister Overseas, registered with the Bar Council of England and Wales, and partner at De Cotta McKenna & Santafé, a law firm offering support with all aspects of Spanish Law for English speaking clients with offices in Mijas-Costa, Coín, Granada and Tenerife. Sandra heads the team at the firm’s Nerja office, located at: De Cotta McKenna & Santafé Calle Diputación, 6-2º-A 29780 Nerja Málaga Tel: (00 34) 952 52 71 14 Fax: (00 34) 952 52 34 28 Website: www.decottalaw.com

Linea Directa LÍNEa DirECta LaUNChEs aN ON LiNE sErViCE OFFEriNg LEgaL assistaNCE iN ENgLish • The service, offered by practising registered lawyers, will advise the company’s customers on Spanish legislation in areas such as housing, consumption, family law, labour law, motoring queries and penal law. • The service will provide 24 hour assistance in the case of urgent enquiries, the checking and editing of documents and discounts of up to 50% on lawyers’ fees if further action is required. Línea Directa, market leader in the sale of direct insurance in Spain, has launched an online service offering legal assistance to its customers, which will advise those policyholders purchasing this cover on areas such as housing, consumption, family law, labour law and penal law. Línea Directa’s new cover, the price of which will be up to 40% more economical than the market average, will answer queries on buying and selling, renting and house renovations; complaints against suppliers regarding consumer issues, divorce and the division of matrimonial property, labour issues or vehicle registration and deregistration, among many other areas. In addition, the service – the first of its kind in the insurance sector – will provide legal assistance in the case of road safety offences committed by the insured vehicle. If, however, assistance is given by a lawyer of the customer’s own choice, Línea Directa will offer 110 euros in legal aid, unless the lawyer is provided free of charge by the state. If in and out-of court actions are subsequently required Línea Directa can put the client in contact with its network of lawyers throughout Spain, which will save the customer between 10 and 50% on legal fees. 24-hour assistance for urgent enquiries The service of Legal assistance for Motorists operates from Monday to Friday from 8am to 10pm. In the case of urgent enquiries, such as emergencies in the home, incidents occurring at night affecting families – including spouses or children – such as theft, credit cards being blocked or unreturned, or damage caused by pets, Línea Directa will offer a service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In both cases, the customer must call 902 123 161 or email atencionjuridica@lineadirecta.es.

Beer Beer contains female hormones! Last month, National University of Lesotho scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption. The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women. To test the theory, 100 men drank 8
pints of beer each within a 1 hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects: 1) Argued over nothing. 2) Refused to apologise when obviously wrong. 3) Gained weight. 4) Talked excessively without making sense. 5) Became overly emotional. 6) Couldn't drive. 7) Failed to think rationally. 8) Had to sit down while urinating.... No further testing was considered necessary

Redwell® Infrared Heating Systems Heat your house with a work of art about us - We have been in Torrox for more than five years as the main distributor for Redwell® Infrared heating systems in Spain. During this time, we have successfully established Redwell® products on the Spanish market with agents in Madrid, Mallorca and on the Costa Blanca. We have many glowing references from customers all along the Costa del Sol; not only for single rooms, apartments and houses, but also for villas where the whole radiator heating system has been taken out and completely replaced by Redwell® heaters. The excellent quality of the products, the frequently enlarged product range, an extensive advice service and our co-operation with qualified electricians ensure complete satisfaction and confidence for our clients. about redwell® infrared heating - The Redwell® heaters are very economical to run and create an extremely healthy room climate. In comparison to conventional heaters, infrared waves do not heat the air, but do heat the walls and furniture. People also absorb the heating
waves which make one feel nice and cosy. Walls and furniture store the heat much longer than air, and then release it back into the living space. In this way, the walls remain dry and mould has no chance to spread. Another advantage is that the air does not circulate, therefore no dust is lifted into it. Redwell® products are distributed in more than 30 countries and have won several prizes at international trade fairs. Exclusive Designs Redwell® Infrared Heating panels are available in different sizes and three colours, also in exclusive designs such as pictures, mirrors, globes, columns, blackboards, glass elements and other objects. The panels are beautifully made and flexible in application – they can heat whole houses, rooms or indeed just where you sit most. At the same time, they enhance your house by providing works of art for your walls, so that people who visit will feel the warmth – without realising that the heat is coming from pictures and mirrors hanging on your walls. Contact us or see the exhibition in our shop! See main advert below.

Little Johnny! A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Johnny stood up. The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Johnny?' 'No Miss, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!' ------------------------------------------------------------Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face. 'Why do you do that, mummy?' he asked. 'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue. 'What's the matter?’, asked Johnny 'Giving up?' ------------------------------------------------------------The maths teacher saw that Johnny wasn't paying attention in class. She called on him and said, 'Johnny! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?' Johnny quickly replied, 'BBC 2, Channel 4,
ESPN and the Cartoon Network!' ------------------------------------------------------------Johnny's class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want to capture him very badly’. Johnny asked,’Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture?’ ------------------------------------------------------------Little Johnny attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?' His father replied, 'Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, looking worried, said, 'Dad, I think the Postman wants to buy Mum ....'

The Word Queen Our dreams are very insightful. Not only do they feed us relevant information about our current circumstances, but they’re also an excellent source of ideas for books! If you think you don’t dream, then you are wrong. We all dream, it’s just that some of us remember our dreams easier than others. Keep a notepad and pen by the side of your bed or under your pillow and as soon as you awaken (whatever the time) write down what you’d just been dreaming about. If you really can’t remember that’s ok too – just write down anything that’s in your head. Repeat this process every morning, or every time you awaken from a sleep, and you’ll soon train yourself to remember your dreams far easier. That information can then be analysed and used to form storylines, characters and even settings. For example, last night I dreamt about being trapped in a burning house with no hopes of escaping. I felt sure I was going to die, but then
an angel came to my rescue and broke the window so that I could climb out and escape. I then found myself flying through the sky, which was ablaze with wonderful, vibrant colours. It was magical. How could I use this dream to create a story…? I could write a story about a girl who didn’t believe in angels until one saved her life. Perhaps this angel becomes her best friend and they go for many adventures together. Ok, so this kind of content might be more suitable for a children’s book, but it’s still an idea, which came from just one dream! Love & Light The Word Queen x If you have written a book and you’d like to get it published, or if you’re just after some impartial advice, email The Word Queen on info@thewordqueen.com or see her advert on the facing page…

Save thousands off your heating bills! Unique Multi Heat Source - house heating and hot water system With an output of 43699 BTU. using Solar as it’s primary heating source, followed by a very efficient heat pump for the times when the sun does not shine, this can operate down to extremely cold conditions and then as a backup to this, if you have a gas, oil or other type boiler this can still operate as a last result. An Air to Water Heat Pump is integrated with a solar collector, gas or other fuel boiler and electrical heater to provide you a complete heating solution (Both for house heating of under floor or radiators and sanitary hot water heating). It optimises the energy utilisation of free energy (solar energy), green energy (heat pump), traditional energy (gas/fuel boiler or electrical heater). Solar energy is free for everyone in the world, so it is the first heat source for this system. This unique system will take full advantage of free solar energy first and if the free energy is not enough, then it will cycle on the heat pump to provide heat. On the condition that both solar energy and heat pump can not provide enough heat to your house and water (in extreme cold conditions), then it will turn on the built-in electrical heater or gas/fuel boiler as back-up heating source to supply enough heat and keep a comfortable warm environment for you.

Random Joke A man went to Harley Street in London having seen an advertisement for a Gynaecologist’s Assistant. Naturally interested, he went in and asked the clerk for details.
foam and gently shave off their pubic hair, then rub in soothing oils so they're ready for the gynaecologist’s examination. The annual salary is £65,000, but if you’re interested you'll have to go to Manchester ”
The clerk pulled up the file and read; “The job entails getting the ladies ready for the gynaecologist. You have to help the women out of their underwear, lay them down and carefully wash their private regions, then apply shaving
“My God, is that where the job is?" asked the man. The clerk answered, “No sir, that’s where the end of the queue is!”

The meerkat uses its tail for balance and as a signal. ‌ kat
A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang", or "clan". Meerkats have an average life span of 12 - 14 years. Meerkats are immune to the poison from scorpions or snakes and feed on them every now and again. Meerkats are a tasty treat for jackals, eagles, and falcons. Other names for meerkats include the slendertailed meerkat and African suricate.
Meerkats can dig as much dirt as their own body weight in a couple seconds. Meerkats are known to have special calls meant for specific purposes. Some calls indicate the approach of snakes and birds of prey, while others give the signal that predators are coming. Every adult meerkat has an important role in the mob. Some take on sentry duty, watching for predators and sounding the alarm when danger is present; others baby-sit, gather food or tend to housekeeping chores. Approximate weight is 1.5 pounds (males are slightly larger). Adults are 10 - 14 inches tall.

Amazing Animals (Continued) Tails, which are 7 to 10 inches long and taper to a reddish or black tip, are used for balance when meerkats stand on their haunches. Each limb has four toes, one being a long retractable claw. Coats are usually fawn-coloured and peppered with gray, tan, or brown with a silver tint. Unique to each individual meerkat are short, parallel stripes across the back, extending from the base of the tail to the shoulders. Meerkats eat almost anything. They love bugs, watermelon, cat food treats, bones, frozen fruit, and yolk from hard-boiled eggs (a rare treat since eggs are bad for their health).

Book Review ZIGZAG - ‘Flashbacks of a Painter’ written by local artist Gym Halama.. From the early beginnings of an upbringing in London’s Sloane Square back in the fifties, through to the more recent years and the Spanish connection, Gym takes the reader on a twisting, turning whistlestop tour of times, places and people that you cannot help but let catch your imagination. From Moscow to Marbella, from Burma to Beverly Hills, Gym’s curious escapades and at times even curiouser companions totally compell the reader to keep on turning the pages. This rollercoaster of random memoirs bounces the reader between the years and places in a zig-
zag like fashion, yet interlinking to give the reader the full story. Comprising of fifty short stories accompanied with fifty of Gyms’ very own paintings, beautifully presented in colour, each painting represents a link to each story and makes a visual feast for the eyes as well as the imagination. Gyms’ eventful life stories, take us through the hard times of a struggling painter trying to survive, through to sometimes exotic and adventurous yet often amusing tales of a thoroughly interesting life story. ZigZag. Flashbacks of a Painter is available to buy on Amazon.com or you can pick up a copy from the Camel Stop: C/ Carniceria, 31, Chite, Lecrin Valley.

Psychic Medium Energy Healer
One sunny morning I went to the beach to still my mind, when I suddenly found myself feeling distracted. I felt something racing within me, almost like I had to do something, but I didn’t have a clue what! I looking around and my eyes fixed on the Buddhist temple, on the mountain of Benalmadena. It looked so beautiful and I stared at it for some time, which stalled any attempts to meditate. I decided to call it a day so I set off up the mountain road to Mijas Pueblo. Along the way I accidentally took a wrong turning, but I knew I could turn around at the next roundabout. A few moments later I’d slipped into alpha mode and I travelled past the roundabout, heading towards Benalmadena Pueblo. By this time I’d grown slightly cross with myself and I found myself saying, “What’s wrong with you today Mark?!” Suddenly I noticed the gold top of the Buddhist temple – I was heading straight for it. I decided to turn around at the roundabout by the temple, when I noticed hundreds of cars and the closer I got to the temple, the more people and cars I saw. I wondered what was happening, so I wound my window down and asked a man in Buddhist robes. He replied, “Today, my brother, is a very special day. Today there are four Buddhas – lamas – giving initiations. “When does it start?” I asked. He smiled and replied, “Just park on the left. It begins in five minutes.” So I parked my car and I walked straight up to the lamas until I was right in front of them without pushing in. As if by magic the universe led me there, at this divine moment, to be initiated by four of the wisest living lamas. I received the blessing and went on my way with a sense of both joy and shock. This story illustrates that the universe is a truly magical place, which pulls people together in divine moments. This was just one of those moments… See advert opposite

Almayate
Almayate is situated close to the much larger town of Torre del Mar. It has three different areas, Almayate Baja which is on the beach, hidden from view by sugar cane, amongst which can be found bars and restaurants. Here you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Jamaica or some shanty town except the sand is grey! The inhabitants are artistic and slightly eccentric as can be seen by their monuments and rock paintings. There is even a bonsai nursery hidden away behind one of the bars! For beach lovers there are two campsites one of which is for naturists who can be seen strolling naked along the shore, soaking up the rays. Their chiringuito is for naturists only and if you arrive there with clothes on you will be asked to leave, textiles are not allowed and if you persist in walking on their part of the beach with anything on except your birthday suit you will be greeted with slow hand clapping until you leave! But don´t worry, if you
are a textile there are plenty of other beaches and chiringuitos where everyone will be happy to see you comfortably dressed in a bikini or shorts. Almayate Pueblo is on the other side of the coast road and here you can find restaurants, banks, shops and a school. There are huge craggy rocks above which tower one of the few remaining Osborne Bulls who can be seen from miles away. The main focal point of interest in the town is the 16th century church of Santa Ana with its attractive bells. Almayate was the main farming area in the Vélez-Málaga area during the Nasrid period where the most common agricultural system was irrigated crops. It was the only village that was granted a privilege for settling less than a league away from the coast after the conquest of the Catholic Monarchs, so it became known as the Seguro de Almayate. Higher up and across the motorway is Almayate Alto where there are many farmhouses and new villas with spectacular views of the coast.

Hot stone massage is a variation on classic massage therapy in which flat, smooth, heated stones are placed on key pressure points of the body. The massage therapist may also hold the stones and manually use them to work certain areas of the body. how does hot stone massage work? The hot stones used in hot stone massage are typically made of basalt, a type of rock that is rich in iron and able to retain heat. The stones are immersed in water in an electric heating device until they are within a certain temperature range. They may be placed on specific points of the back, in the palms of the hands or between the toes. Some massage therapists will place stones on certain areas thought to be energy centres, attempting to rebalance the body and mind. The heat warms and relaxes the muscles and allows the therapist to apply deep or light pressure depending on your preference—both are effective! The warmth of the hot stones also helps to improve circulation and calms the nervous system. why do people get hot stone massage? Many people find the warmth of the hot stones to be both comforting and relaxing. Hot stone massage is ideal for people who have poor circulation, muscle tension, or for those who prefer a lighter form of massage. The calming effect of the heat enables the therapist to work the muscles without applying deep pressure. People also get hot stone massage to help a variety of health conditions: Back pain and aches - Osteoarthritis and arthritis pain Stress, anxiety and tension - Insomnia & Depression
tel: 620 566 402
What can I expect during my hot stone massage? The massage therapist often begins by applying oil to the body, which allows the hot stones to glide smoothly along the muscles. The massage therapist can place the stones on your back. After the hot stones have relaxed the muscles, the massage therapist may remove them and use his or her hands to directly massage the skin. The hot stones may then be placed back on to the body and left for a short period of time. You will be asked to turn over onto your back. The massage therapist may place small hot stones between your toes or in the palms of your hands. He or she will then repeat the sequence.

Film iew Revereafter H
Hereafter is like watching three separate movies. Each of the main characters has their own story before their paths cross. Matt Damon is the main character, who plays George. Being psychic has caused him nothing but problems, and his own brother exploits him. His powers even get in the way of a relationship with a woman he likes. George’s obsession with Charles Dickens is adorable; he lights up like a child on Christmas when the subject is brought up. It’s also a little sad because his obsession seems to be the only

pleasant thing he has in his life. George is conflicted as well; being psychic causes him pain, but it also hurts him to not help people. Cecile De France plays Marie LeLay and hers is the story that links everyone together. Marie comes back from the dead after her wannabe rescuers give up on her. The hereafter haunts her, and she wants to get her story out to the world, but she is met with a lot of resistance. Twins Frankie and George McLaren seem to both be credited with being twins Marcus and Jason. Marcus, who was always quiet to begin with, is completely devastated after Jason dies. The characters finally do meet by pure accident; inexplicably drawn together… Star Rating ***/***** (average!) Glasgow Boys Join Ferrari
Divorce v Murder
The Ferrari F1 team fired their entire pit crew yesterday. This announcement followed Ferrari's decision to take advantage of the British government's 'Work for your Dole' scheme and employ some Glaswegian youngsters. The decision to hire them was brought about by a recent documentary on how unemployed youths from Castlemilk were able to remove a set of wheels in less than 6 seconds without proper equipment, whereas Ferrari's existing crew could only do it in 8 seconds with millions of pounds worth of high tech equipment. It was thought to be an excellent, bold move by the Ferrari management team as most races are won and lost in the pits, giving Ferrari an advantage over every other team. However, Ferrari got more than they bargained for! At the crew's first practice session, not only was the Glasgow pit crew able to change all four wheels in under 6 seconds but, within 12 seconds, they had re-sprayed, re-badged and sold the car to the McLaren team for 8 cases of Stella, a bag of weed and some photos of Lewis Hamilton's bird in the shower.
A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes. "I would like to buy some cyanide." she asked The pharmacist asked, "Why in the world do you need cyanide?" The lady replied, "I need it to poison my husband." The pharmacist's eyes got big and he explained, "Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband, that's against the law. I'll lose my license! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen. Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!" The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife. The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, "Oh, you didn't tell me you had a prescription."

Cats v Dogs A doggy or a moggy? Donna Gee takes a humorous look at the benefits and brickbats of ownership of a dog or cat
yourself for five minutes and you open the door on your return to a mound of doggy dung and a floor awash with a ship-load of urine.
I love cats more than any other animal. They are to me the most mysterious, fascinating and wonderful creatures on earth. And not only can they read your mind, they can also manipulate it to their own advantage.
The yelps when Little Poo is left momentarily on its own are bad enough. But they are nothing to the yelps of human anger that boom into the stratosphere when Mr and Mrs Owner discover what poochie was up to while they were out of the room.
That’s the voice of 40 years of cat ownership speaking. Oh, and I didn’t own any of my moggies – they owned me. From Fluffy to Thatcher, from Geoffrey to Henry and from Lucky to Sooty, I was THEIR pet, not the reverse. If it didn’t suit them to live in my home, they’d have been off like a flash to appoint some other purr soul as honorary daily food-andmilk supplier. ALL IN THE NAME: My cat Geoffrey (Geoffrey Boycat to give him his full name) is a fine cricketer! Some of us are cat people, some dog people and some, like me, care for both. Only we usually have a preference and in my household, moggies have always held the edge. To start with, they allow their owner more independence. If you’re not around for a few days, it doesn’t really matter as long as someone is there to feed them. Leave a dog on its own for two days and you’re not only in serious trouble with the animal authorities, the poor mutt will also have moped itself into a candidate for the canine nuthouse. Then there is the cleanliness issue. Dogs love to pepper their noses with the ghastliest of savouries left for them by their fellow barkers. The browner and smellier the better for Fido and his pals, and the worse for those of us whose shoes squelch the stink into our rugs and carpets when we get home. From my experience, there’s nothing more frustrating than trying to house-train a puppy. It will pee and poo to order providing you let it out a minimum of 250 times a day. But pop out
Yet to a dog lover, those Close Encounters of the T*rd Kind are all acceptable in exchange for the pure, uncomplicated love you are guaranteed in return for just being there. Who cares that Fido spends all day rolling in mud, urine, vomit and the faeces of every animal on earth? It only takes a couple of hours to clean him up – and then those luscious licks and doggy hugs make it all worthwhile. Unless, like me, you’re already so browned off by those pooper bloopers that you’ve vowed never to have a dog again. Cats are a complete contrast. House-trained before they’ve ever seen a house, all a kitten needs is a litter tray and it will wee and poo into it ad infinitum. Mind you, removing the hail of stones that hurtle around the house in mini-puss’s attempts to bury the residue with its lethal back feet can take twice as long as clearing up after any untrained puppy. Moggies also need no teaching when it comes to cleaning themselves. And thereby hangs another tale – plus body, head and legs. Before you know it, puss has licked herself bald and is coughing up a two-ton hair ball. You rush her to the vet thinking she’s on her last legs but fear not…they all do it. Unless, like my Molly, the furry one suffers from feline asthma and vomits up nothing but wheeze. If your cat is a Tom, then you have another problem or three. First and worst is his territory spraying, and the pungent, difficult-to-remove smell it creates. Then there’s his sexual appetite, which he’ll inevitably impose on all the local moggettes – accompanied by a cat’s chorus loud enough to drown out a 30-piece orchestra.

Cats V Dogs (Continued) The solution to that one is simple. Have Tiger Tom snipped in the bud when he’s a few months old and the spraying and s****ing will be a thing of the past. If you have a dog, you will of course need to take it for walks. Unless you are a lazy so and so like one or two of my friends – and end up with a mutt that’s even fatter than its owner. In such instances, at least fatso and her pet won’t need a pooper scooper to clean up the dog mess, though not that many people seem to bother if the pavements in my locality at El Raso are anything to go by. People not clearing up the mess left by their dogs in public places is a big problem everywhere. But here’s a question for you: If you saw a threatening-looking yob’s pit-bull pooing outside your home and he didn’t clean up the mess (the yob, not the pitbull), what would you do? If your answer is ‘nothing’, score a brownie point for honesty. Cat-walking is strictly for models, of course. But
at the end of the day, you’ll shack up with the pet that suits YOU, whether it be a dog, cat, rabbit, kangaroo or a 15-foot crocodile. My 11year-old grandson would happily have the lot – particularly if the croc came with a guarantee to eat his sister. As for me, I’ll stick with my two moggies back home in Guardamar. Even if I was at my wits end hoping they were OK whilst I spent Christmas and the New Year with my family in Manchester. Don’t worry, whilst I was away some good friends were feeding them both – along with three or four strays who have adopted me (and particularly my daily food offerings) over recent months. They all used to be straggly. Now they are verging on obese. But I’d happily take them all with me everywhere I go if only they could speak English. Ps. Question: What do you call a brown Spanish cat? answer – A chocolate gato. By Donna Gee, aka Grumpy Old Gran

Digital Marketing Lee Manton came to Spain with his family to test the waters and was surprised at how few expat local businesses have embraced digital marketing in comparison to the UK or Germany etc, who now deem it an essential and growing method of getting and keeping customers. Advertising your small business should be the next most important activity next to looking after your customer, particularly when business is slow. Local advertising and word of mouth are the two mainstays of this activity, that is placing advertisements in local magazines, or displaying your business name across your van are good examples of direct marketing and reputation management. Word of mouth is another great generator of new customers for small businesses who unintentionally rely on previous customers to help new prospects find a solution to their needs or problems. With these methods of advertising, in many
Laptop
cases your customers want to know and find out more about you and your business before they call your phone or visit your premises, or the timeframe changes and they don’t need your services for another month or two. How we can fix this is by sending your prospects online or to another digital platform i.e. mobile phone short codes, where they can discover everything they need to know, so as to help them with their decision to buy and also build a relationship with them for future business. This is called digital marketing and it compliments traditional direct marketing and improves many metrics such as how many people call your phone number, who will visit your store and who they tell as word of mouth. It’s a fact that Yellow Pages ads that have a website address get more new enquiries than ones that don’t. The reason for this is that people want to go to a website before taking the next step before buying, and when this is done right, you have a better chance of getting a new long term customer.
Helps keep your laptop cool and not become a victim of overheating, which could cost you alot of money!

Digital Marketing isn’t difficult and most PC literate people have the skills to do this themselves if shown in simple steps i.e.
A few actual answers from various quizzes on our TV and radio....
Create a website that will show up in Google for every product or service you have. Put a video of yourself on your website that guarantees a call back. Collect your prospects and customers email and mobile data to send them offers. Make it easy for word of mouth i.e. “I know a good plumber GO TO www.plumbob.es”. The benefits of embracing digital marketing far out weigh the time it takes to add this essential marketing process to your business. Lee Manton will be showing small businesses how they can do this themselves for very little cost. If the interest is there, just go to www.marketingspain.info to watch a video

Stella Awards It's time again for the annual 'Stella Awards'! For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald's in New Mexico, where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right? That's right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S. You know, the kinds of cases that make you scratch your head. So keep your head scratcher handy. Here are the Stellas for this past year -2010: 7th Place - Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the run-
ning toddler was her own son. Start scratching! 6th Place - Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles, California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbour ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbour's hubcaps. 5th Place - Terrence Dickson, of Bristol, Pennsylvania, who was leaving a house he had just burgled by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count 'em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner's insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish. We should all have this kind of anguish.

Stella Awards (Continued) 4th Place - Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor's beagle - even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun. 3rd Place - Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument. 2nd Place - Kara Walton, of Claymont, Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid
paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000....oh, yeah, plus dental expenses. 1st Place - This year's runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who purchased a new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver's seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner's manual that she couldn't actually leave the driver's seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her, are you sitting down? $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home. Why didn’t I think of this one !!

Turn your gold into cash
Great Time To Sell!!
“Times are tough,” “money is short,” “prices are higher.” “I don’t get as much pension as I used to.” These are little phrases that we have all heard over the last few years; either you said them yourself, or you have heard someone else say them. More and more people are looking for ways to raise some cash to ease the day-today burden, or just a bit of pocket money like we all used to enjoy not so long ago. Well here’s another excellent idea that could leave you amazed! If you have not worn or used your jewellery within the last 12 months, the chances are you won't wear it again. So, why not cash it in and treat yourself to something you would really use? Mark at Goldxpert has been visiting the Costas for more than 12 months now and especially in the last six months, The Sentinella has had a number of readers saying how happy they have been with the level of expertise they encountered, and also how surprised they were with the amount of money they received, especially when they thought all they were sitting on had little value. Gold prices have never been so high and won’t last forever, so dig out anything that you don’t use any more and bring it down to one of the venues listed below.
Mark will be back in the area on March 10th, 11th and 12th. Thursday 10th March Bar Olas (Burriana Beach) - 3pm - 5pm the Codfather (Nerja) - 6pm - 7.30pm Friday 11th March Friday Market (Chiringuito Antonio - Venta Baja) - 11am - 1pm Bar atila (Puente don Manuel) - 3pm - 5pm harlekin (Torrox Costa) - 5.30pm - 7pm Saturday 12th March El Faro (Almuñecar) - 12pm - 2pm Danny’s Bar (Almuñecar) - 2pm - 3pm Los amigos (Torrox Park) - 4pm - 5pm sands & C (Torrox Costa) - 5.30pm - 7pm Who knows – you could be sitting on a small fortune!! If you feel that you would like to see Mark for a more discreet service at your home, then just email him at goldxpert@btinternet.com and he will happy to arrange a visit. So get searching and ask yourself “Will I ever wear this again?” If the answer is no, then cash it in – you’ll be glad you did! See main advert on page 71

BEM idiomas Studying any language is challenging, but I have to start this month’s article by recommending and congratulating BEM idiomas in Velez Malaga, especially my personal tutor, Sandra, for teaching me and giving me the confidence to enable me to have Spanish conversations and make Spanish friends. I have been a long while learning and will no doubt be learning for many years to come until I can happily say I am fluent, but this is because I am by no means the fastest learner in the world and I have done no homework either; I just don’t get time – juggling work and two small children. So if you don’t work, or only work part-time and have no small children, just imagine how much you could learn in four years. Well, I think you would definitely be fluent, because if I have learnt what I have, then there is certainly hope for all of you out there. It's that time again...Share'oscope time! First let's take a look at how last month's share, Ortac Resources, are doing so far. They were purchased at 2.40p, but they've since dropped to 1.60p, so that's a rather hefty drop. Perhaps the share of March will perform better. This month Mr Stockmarket has picked Encore Oil. He has purchased 819 shares at 122p each. Tune in next month to see what's going down.. Happy Investing! PLEasE NOtE The investments we make are fictitious. Mind, Body & Spirit A few years ago I met an old friend whom I had lost contact with. Whilst catching up with one another he shared that he had recently suffered a massive heart attack. Since he was always a very health conscious man who had looked after himself (he owned a health-food shop), I was shocked by the news. In response to my questions it emerged that for many years prior to the heart attack, at a certain time of the year, he had suffered intense chest pains over a period of a few days, which had grown progressively stronger until – at the exact same time of year – he eventually had a full-blown heart attack. When I asked him if the specific date had any other significance he thought hard for a while then exclaimed, “My God, that’s when my father died, suddenly, when I was a boy! My family was so devastated and I was so shocked that I never really grieved his death.” At a physical level the heart is the dispenser of life energy, pumping blood around the body, supplying all its cells with the nutrients necessary for them to carry out their tasks and carrying away the waste products of their metabolism. However, at a deeper level it is responsible for mediating another vital fundamental human need; the need for love and the ability to give and receive it. This more emotional function takes on a greater significance when we consider heart attacks – one of the major causes of death and disability in modern times. Personality type is recognised as a major factor in the likelihood of suffering a heart attack. Type A – high stress level, ambitious, driven,
aggressive personalities are at a significantly higher risk than their more laidback, relaxed, sympathetic type B counterparts. However this stereotypical personality classification belies a deeper and more general range of abilities and attitudes in relating not just to Love itself, but to all our emotions. Loss, bereavement and disappointment are life experiences which at some time or another confront us all, and our hearts have been designed and evolved – in our natural state – to cope with. Responding to such emotional blows with an open heart, allowing ourselves to feel the loss or hurt, to grieve, and ultimately to let go and / or forgive keeps us emotionally balanced and healthy. Attempting to protect oneself by closing our heart, denying or holding onto the hurt, refusing to grieve or blaming others, constitutes an attack on our heart and its primary function, to keep us connected to Love. The moment when a person collapses to the ground in agony clutching their chest as their heart stops beating, is actually the final capitulation to an attack on our heart which may have been going on for decades or indeed for most of our lives. As my friend had buried the profound emotional impact of his father’s untimely death, his heart, with extraordinarily precise timing, had delivered successive requests to address it! Lux Mundi - Womens World Day Of Prayer Service at Lux Mundi to celebrate women’s world day of prayer
place, some 35 hours later, in neighbouring Western Samoa. By then the day will have been celebrated in over 170 countries.’
On Friday, 4th March at 5.00pm Lux Mundi will be hosting the service to mark the Women’s World Day of Prayer.
Stretching from Peru to Antarctica, the Republic of Chile occupies a long, narrow strip of land 2,640 miles long and 110 miles wide. It is a land of incredible contrasts. It also has the highest incidence of domestic violence in Latin America and most women suffer from discrimination in some form or other. Equal opportunities are being pursued.
This year, the service has been designed by the women of Chile with the title “How Many Loaves Have You?” It is an appropriate theme for bread is eaten at every meal and is very much part of every day life. The women of Chile offer what it means to them as they share this service with us. Jean Hackett, president of the National Committee of the Women’s World Day of Prayer Movement, said: ‘This is always an exciting day as a great wave of prayer sweeps the world, beginning when the first service is held in Tonga and continuing around the world until the final service takes
Although organised and led by women, this is essentially a day of prayer for everybody as we demonstrate our solidarity with our sisters and brothers in other countries and all are welcome to attend. Lux Mundi Ecumenical Centre, Avenida Moscatel No. 1, Torre Del Mar Tel. 952543334

Unable to separate them and perplexed as to what to do next, although it was late, she called the vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. Having explained the problem to him, the vet said, "Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and he will be able to withdraw". "Do you think that will work?" she asked "Well it just bloody worked for me" he replied. ------------------------------------------------------------A lady midget goes to the doctor, she says “Please help me i've a terrible tickling on my front bottom.” So the doctor picks her up and stands her on his couch and lifts up her skirt. s n g i S r Sta Everyone’s fave astrologer Ms Mystic Mag zooms us into fifth gear with her readings for the month of March. Capricorn – Your inability to listen to good advice will let you down big time this month. For once in your life take off your arrogance hat and listen to those that know better. Lucky sign – Dried apricots Aquarius – Time will tell. Lucky sign – a Grandfather clock Pisces – Perhaps you feel stuck in a miserable old rut right now? Well it’s not surprising really. You do insist on leading the same old boring life month after month, year after year. Yawwwwn! Lucky sign – A change (even if it’s just your clothes to begin with – start small and all that) Aries – Heavens forbid, you are turning into your mother! She’ll be happy but will your other half? Lucky sign – Pickle Taurus – At times you are red, at others you are grey, but right now, in March 2011, you are feeling pretty blue, which is a mighty great shame. Lucky sign – Comedies Gemini – Indulge this month in your favourite pizza and perhaps even muster the courage to try a brand new topping. Wash it down with buckets of ice cream and other naughty treats. Life really is for living this month and you are gonna show everyone how it’s really done. Lucky sign – A loo
Cancer – Money worries continue to occupy your mind as you watch your savings plummet. Jobs are hard to come by too and you are feeling rather like a wet flannel. Lucky sign – A dry towel Leo – A new wardrobe is but a shop away. This month you possess the natural talent to discover stylish new clobber that usually passes your eye. Hey Miss Trend Setter! Lucky sign – Sales Virgo – Love casts its golden net over a sorry shadow, at a time when you least expect it. This time the love you discover is much sweeter, kinder and softer than any you have ever experienced before. Yes, this will be the lasting type. Lucky sign – Happiness Libra – Certain friends, who have shown signs of small cracks before, will now split into deep holes. In other words you are going to shed a few friends this month, but never mind. Out with the old and in with the new! Lucky sign – Circles Scorpio – Lah le la de dah la lea…..You are feeling mightily happy and sprightly, so you will want to sing a lot. Lucky sign – Stars in Their Eyes Sagittarius – Do not get on any kind of sea vessel this month as it is destined to sink. Lucky sign – Dry land And if it’s your birthday this month..... Celebrate with a vino in front of the fire - brrrrr!
