CONTaCT US: Editor: keidi Email: info@thesentinella.com

m Fro Ed... the Since the New Year I’ve been on somewhat of a health kick and the new lifestyle feels great! I decided to give up sugar and also any other non-sugary junk foods, such as crisps (potato chips in the US.) I’ve also been drinking a daily green drink, either a vegetable smoothie, or a wheatgrass juice. Plus, I’ve been working out 6 days a week, with either a dance / aerobic routine or a yoga session. To add to the mix, I’ve been meditating 3 times a day and chanting an ancient Sanskrit hymn once a day. I’m actually a little shocked that I’ve managed to stick to my routine since January 1st, but I think the key is that I didn’t make a New Year’s Resolution in order to achieve this goal. I made a decision. When we decide, truly decide something, there are no other options available. And if we break our decision with ourselves then there are consequences, such as learning not to trust our own word, which destroys self-confidence and in the long term prevents us from achieving any of our goals and dreams. So take a moment to consider what decision you’d like to make right now about your life. It could be to change your eating habits to exercise more, to write a book, or start your dream business. And once you’ve made the decision, there’s no going back…right?!

De Cotta Law The Spanish tax authorities – Hacienda – have begun a new campaign to ensure that non-residents who own property in Spain do pay their taxes For many years we have been advising property owners of the importance of paying this tax annually. Now the tax authorities are actually sending demands giving an estimated or provisional figure for the tax payable. The failure to respond to these demands will mean that a tax debt is created and interest and fines can increase the total amount payable. The non resident tax declaration is made in the tax area where the property is situated. The tax is a personal tax so if you are joint owners each of you needs to present the tax declaration separately. All non-residents who own a property in Spain have to pay this tax as follows: 1. Income from lettings/rentals at 24.75% on the net rent received. A number of expenses can be offset against your income from rentals. These include Community fees; Town Hall rates (IBI) Insurance, utilities and interest on mortgages.

2. Deemed income on any property you own which is for your own use. This applies to second homes, holiday homes and any property you own in Spain as a non resident. This is taxable at 24.75% and assessed at 1.1% of the rateable (catastral) value. This applies during the period while you own the home, it is not an annual fixed sum. For example if you purchase in July it is payable from July to December 31st. It is not possible to set up a standing order for this as each year the taxpayer has the obligation to complete the forms and present them to the bank for payment before the 31st of December. The tax authorities are able to claim unpaid non resident tax for the previous 4 years of ownership if you fail to declare. There can also be penalties and fines for late payment so it is far better to appoint a fiscal representative to pay the tax each year. For more information please contact De Cotta Law on tax@decottalaw.net

Strange News Station Dog A dog who became a global star after being abandoned at a Scottish train station with his belongings in a suitcase has found a new home. Shar-Pei crossbreed 'Kai' was discovered tied to a railing outside Ayr station next to a suitcase containing a pillow, toy, food bowl and food. After his story was publicised, the Scottish SPCA found themselves inundated with offers to adopt Kai from people all over the world. However, his lucky new owner is self-employed hydraulic engineer Ian Russell, 52. Mr Russell said he was left heartbroken when his Dalmatian Mica, who he had owned for 15 years, passed away just before Christmas. When he heard about Kai he immediately applied to adopt him but didn't think that he stood a chance. And when he learned he had been successful he said it was a "bit like winning the lottery".

Fetching bunny A Brooklyn man has trained his girlfriend's pet rabbit to bring him a beer in a custom-made delivery cart. Ben Ahles says he has developed a bond with three-year-old Wallace since moving in with girlfriend Alix nine months ago. He says that he has been collaborating with Wallace to create performance art and "happenings" that capture the rabbit's capabilities and worldly passions. "It took six months to train him to push the beer cart and four different prototypes before we got the right one," he said. A clip of Wallace performing his party trick has attracted more than a million views on YouTube - but Mr Ahles says it wasn't as easy as it looks.

St Patrick’s Day Facts 1. wE ShOULD REaLLY wEaR BLUE Saint Patrick himself would have to deal with pinching on his feast day. His colour was “Saint Patrick’s blue,” a light shade. The colour green only became associated with the big day after it was linked to the Irish independence movement in the late 18th century. 2. SaINT PaTRICk waS BRITISh Although he made his mark by introducing Christianity to Ireland in the year 432, Patrick wasn’t Irish himself. He was born to Roman parents in Scotland or Wales in the late fourth century. 3. ThE IRISh TakE SaINT PaTRICk’S DaY SERIOUSLY As you might expect, Saint Patrick’s Day is a huge deal in his old stomping grounds. It’s a national holiday in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. 4. SO DO NEw YORkERS New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is

one of the world’s largest parades. Since 1762, 250,000 marchers have traipsed up Fifth Avenue on foot – the parade still doesn’t allow floats, cars, or other modern trappings. 5. ChICagO FEELS LUCkY, TOO New York may have more manpower, but Chicago has a spectacle all of its own. The city has been celebrating Saint Patrick by dumping green dye into the Chicago River since 1962. It takes 40 tons of dye to get the river to a suitably festive shade! 6. IT USED TO BE a DRY hOLIDaY For most of the 20th century, Saint Patrick’s Day was considered a strictly religious holiday in Ireland, which meant that the nation’s pubs were closed for business on March 17. (The one exception went to beer vendors at the big national dog show, which was always held on Saint Patrick’s Day.) In 1970, the day was converted to a national holiday, and the stout resumed flowing.

Interesting Facts - Haiti became the world's first black-led republic and the first independent Caribbean state when it threw off French colonial control and slavery in the early 19th century. Haiti is the second oldest independent nation in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States. The 2010 earthquake and 2012 hurricane have left an already weak economy in ruins. Unemployment is chronic, and severe deforestation gives crops little chance to recover. Haiti achieved notoriety from the late 1950s during the dictatorships of the voodoo physician Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier and his son, Jean-Claude, or "Baby Doc". Tens of thousands of people were killed under their 29-year rule. Cock fighting is a traditional sport in Haiti. The roosters are fed raw meat and hot peppers soaked in rum to make them aggressive. The winner might bring home $67, more than a person would earn in an entire month.

Fiduciary Wealth Can Help Positive Financial Solutions- How Fiduciary Wealth Can Help Fiduciary Wealth the leading provider of tax led wealth management solutions for expatriates in Spain are holding two important tax and wealth seminars in your area on 18th and 19th of March, the first is in Vinuela/Trapiche on the 18th March followed by Nerja on March 19th. Part of the Fiduciary Group which was founded in 1982 and affiliated to Gibraltar’s oldest legal practice Isola’s 1892, Fiduciary Wealth specialise in helping expatriates resolve their tax planning issues and much more besides. With offices in Central London and Marbella as well as a Head Office in Gibraltar and with a team of qualified, salaried IFA’s, they are well placed to serve the needs of the expatriate community in Axarquia, Costa del Sol and beyond. The seminars will be focussing on a number of topical financial issues and some important changes that have, and are taking place in the financial world at the moment and which will no doubt be of interest to any expatriates concerned about their financial well-being. Model 720 might only have been with us since the end of 2012 but it continues to throw up problems for residents and for those about to declare or revoke their residency status. This Spanish centric law has now been matched by FATCA, a US led initiative which is driving more and more tax authorities into exchanging individual tax information with each other. Find out how these two issues might affect you and what you need to do to ensure that you disclose the appropriate information as well as looking at ways to ensure that you hold your assets as tax efficiently as possible whilst maintaining full transparency. Many of you will no doubt be aware that UK pensions’ legislation will be changing dramatically at the beginning of April but what will this mean for you as a Spanish resident? You will want to know how you can best take advantage of the new laws without causing yourself unnecessary tax problems- as usual the rules are much more complicated than they appear at first glance. Where should you be holding your pension now, in a UK plan or offshore in a QROPS? Your chance to ask the experts how pension freedom might affect your own tax and income situation. Finally Fiduciary Wealth will be discussing some of the problems that holding UK assets

whilst Spanish resident cause. Nobody likes paying tax unnecessarily, yet many expatriates will be doing just that by continuing to hold their investments in the UK whilst resident in Spain. Your speakers will be two of the Fiduciary Wealth directors, Paul Correa and Andrew Hosking. Linea Directa REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTaININg a CERTIFICaTE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOg BOOk The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPaIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTaININg a SPaNISh MOT CERTIFICaTE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. STEP 5: OBTaININg a SPaNISh EQUIVaLENT OF a TaX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your ve-

hicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. we hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

Burglar caught on camera Burglar caught on camera climbing down drainpipe freezes with terror when victim stands at the bottom A hapless burglar who broke into a pensioner's flat was too scared to climb down and face her as she waited for him at the bottom of the drainpipe. The woman threatened to 'belt' him when he got down to street level but Aristride Manfrin, 38, decided it would be safer to hang in mid-air. Manfrin and two younger accomplices had broken into the flat in Turin, Italy, through the front door but were caught when a neighbour spotted them and raised the alarm. But while the two younger crooks managed to climb down the drainpipe and made off, the rather larger and man had inched his way nervously down to the first floor, where angry pensioner Luisa Trentino, 69, was waiting to meet him.

man coming down the drainpipe. I told him hurry up, come down here, I've got a bone to pick with you. 'Would you like it if it happened to your mum?': Brave pensioner confronts burglar who targeted her home "But he didn't. What a coward. He just waited there and refused to come down until police turned up to protect him. I mean it was only me and my daughter, and he was scared." After shimmying down to the first floor level, the burglar decided to stay put, as it was safer than going down and facing the old woman. The other two are still on the run.

She said: "I was with my daughter when she got a call on the telephone from a neighbour to say there were crooks in our flat upstairs. "I was only in the shop on the pavement below, so when I came out I looked up and saw this

Known for THE BEST CLIMATE IN EUROPE, Axarquia has some of the best weather conditions in the world. It isn’t any wonder that millions of people visit this beautiful area every year! The Mediterranean sea to the south and sheltered magnificent mountain ranges to the north, Axarquia sits within the Malaga Province of Andalucia. The following pages feature some of the beautiful towns and villages of this superb and picturesque area.

Benamargosa is located in the river valley of the same name some 15 kilometres inland from Velez-Málaga on the costa del Sol and about a half an hour´s drive by motorway from Málaga. The valley is practically evergreen and almost like an oasis in summertime, due to the plantations of avocado and citrus fruits lining the river. The village centre is 90 metres above sea level and the hills rising up along the side of the river reach 550 metres. Thanks to the warm climate of the area, it is possible to achieve more than one harvest. Traditional vineyards are to be found in the hills surrounding the village, growing the famous Málaga grapes used to make the well known sweet wines of the region. The traditional cultivation of olives, almonds and carob is gradually being replaced by the mango.

Please mention The Sentinella when responding to adverts Canillas de Aceituno

Canillas de Aceituno is situated 17 kilometres from the capital of the Axarquía, VélezMálaga, in the north east of the region at an altitude of 650 metres above sea level. There are three ways of reaching the village, either from Arenas and then turning left before Archez. From Algarrobo then turn left for Archez and right for Salares and carry on. Or the way I find easiest is to turn right off the road between Velez-Malaga and Viñuela, the A-356 at the Renault Lorry Park, then first left and first right signposted Canillas de Aceituno, its just a 10 kilometre road up to the village. As you drive up you can see Canillas nestled amongst the slopes of the Sierra de Tejeda and the great Maroma (the roof of Malaga) with its peak at 2,065 metres! The landscape here is absolutely spectacular in all weather. On a bright, clear sunny day you can see both the Embalse de Viñuela (reservoir) and the sea sparkling below you, but on a dark cloudy day with mist settling on the mountain tops the scenery becomes mysterious and the hills seem to whisper the secrets of their traumatic past when both Phoenicians and Romans passed through this way long before the Moorish rebellion and Franco. A question so many people ask about these mountain pueblos is why, when there were no roads, did people build in such high, remote spots? There are many reasons but probably the main one being water! Here in this area for example, people come from far and wide for the healing powers of the natural mountain spring water which is said to prevent illness!

AS2776

The name Canillas de Aceituno is said to have its origins from the Arabic azzeitun, meaning oil, but then on further investigation I discovered the name comes from the Latin Canillae, meaning zone of cane plantations! Plus the Arab word Azeytuni for woven and dyed silks. Under Christian rule the silk trade thrived here and the cloth was exported from Granada. Rather a shame that the offices for controlling this trade, The House of Tithes, which today is uninhabited, became in the 20th century a tavern and almond ware-house! The silk trade seemingly more romantic and prosperous! Today you can easily miss the village itself as there is now a bypass below which leads directly to the outdoor, municipal swimming pool, but if you continue into the village and find a parking space you can wander through the narrow streets and discover its charm. The impressive 16th century Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a Gothic-Mudejar style building, looms up amidst the houses and the Town Hall in the Plaza de la Constitución stands proudly next to the Casa de los Diezmos (House of Tithes) which although now slightly crumbling shows some fine Mudéjar architecture with its white tower and double blind arches. Luckily this building survived the earthquake which on Christmas day in 1884 destroyed houses and killed 6 people. There are many bars and restaurants serving delicious local cuisine and in springtime there is a chance to eat your way through thousands of kilos of black pudding during the Dia de la Morcilla!

People Who Come And Go kolbjorn keiseraas, Cútar Kolbjorn Keiseraas, a Swedish citizen born in Norway, was inspired to purchase an authentic Andalucian cottage in the country. What attracted him to Spain? “My wife and I both speak a little Spanish. But it is the culture that is the big attraction for me,” he says. “The fact that this country has produced so many wonderful painters such as Goya, Picasso and El Greco means I believe there is inspiration to be found here to paint and be creative”. Kolbjorn purchased a fully renovated character cottage this February, located in the rolling hills between Cutar and Los Romanes. The cottage is bursting with original charm, beams, terracotta floors, little staircases leading up to hidden rooms and terraces to the north and south over stunning countryside. As an enthu-

siastic amateur violinist with a passion for Swedish folk music, getting to know the local Verdiales festivals and music – which feature a unique mix of song, violin, guitar and tambourine – is also something to look forward to. “I am also an enthusiast of Ci Gong, a Chinese form of meditation and martial art,” he adds. “The mountains are full of energy and inspiration for this and I am hoping I might also be able to teach it to others here, in the hills of La Axarquía.” Any fellow musicians out there or folk wishing to know more about Ci Gong? Contact Toni Waterman at Unspoilt Andalusia to get in touch with Kolbjorn. See contact details in ad below

Eastenders - In Dogs Last month saw the 30th anniversary of EastEnders. That's 210 in dog years! We took a look at the canine co-stars who shared the limelight with its human stars.

All your questions answered in our EastEnders in Dogs infographic:

You can't be a true EastEnders fan without knowing about the show's dogs. Can you name the show's longest serving dog? Which dog was brutally murdered? When was 'Peak Dog' on the show? Standout pets: Roly was the first dog to appear on EastEnders, although he retired when his owner realised he just didn't enjoy being a soap star. Wellard is the show's longest-serving canine cast member - at the point when the character was written out of the show he would have been over a century old in human years! Sugar is notable for being the only dog to have actually been murdered, for being witness to Lucas Johnson burying Owen Turner's body under a tree in the Square.

Dogs Can Tell The Difference! Dogs can tell the difference between our happy and angry faces - and here's proof The study used a touch screen system with a treat reward to discover whether canines can really read human emotion. Dogs can tell the difference between human emotions, scientists have discovered. To date, no study has been able to determine whether pet pooches can tell whether their owner is angry or happy - but this study looks set to change things. Using a touch screen and reward system, one group of dogs were shown a woman's happy and angry face side by side, receiving a treat if they picked the happy face. Conducted by Corsin Müller and Ludwig Huber from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, the study also had another group of dogs, who were rewarded for touching the angry faces on the screen.

The scientists found that both groups of canines managed to identify the differences between the two expressions, and also noted that dogs rewarded for touching the happy faces were significantly faster than the others. They also ensured that the dogs were shown halffaces, to prevent them simply picking a facial trait - like teeth or frown lines - instead of reading the emotion on it. "It seems that dogs dislike approaching angry faces," Ludwig Huber said. Corsin Müller added: "We believe that dogs draw on their memory during this exercise. They recognise a facial expression which they have already stored. "We suspect that dogs that have no experience with people would perform worse or not solve tasks at all." Meanwhile, scientists have developed a new hi-tech dog collar which will go on sale in the UK this year. The device will measure a dog's emotions and behaviour patterns and text the results to a smartphone to allow owners to 'read' their dog's feelings.

Random Jokes :) The Bequest Dave Smith is on his deathbed and knows the end is near. His nurse, his wife, his daughter and 2 sons, are with him. He asks for 2 witnesses to be present and a camcorder be in place to record his last wishes, and when all is ready he begins to speak: "My son, Bernie, I want you to take the Mayfair houses." "My daughter, Sybil, you take the apartments over in the east end." "My son, Jamie, I want you to take the offices over in the City Centre." "Sarah, my dear wife, please take all the residential buildings on the banks of the river." The nurse and witnesses are blown away as they did not realise his extensive holdings, and as Doug slips away, the nurse says, "Mrs. Smith, your husband must have been such a hard-working man to have accumulated all this property". Sarah replies, "Property??!! .... The Bastard had a paper round".

Recipe Of The Month This Coquilles Saint-Jacques recipe is traditionally served on little scallop shells, but ovenproof ramekins are a great substitution. Ingredients: •1/4 cup all-purpose flour •3/4 teaspoon salt •1/2 teaspoon curry powder •1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper •1 1/2 pounds sea scallops •4 tablespoons butter •8 ounces fresh mushrooms, cleaned and sliced •1 cup chopped onion •2/3 cup dry white wine •2 tablespoons Cognac •3 tablespoons bread crumbs •2 tablespoons butter, melted •1/3 cup grated Gruyere cheese •1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Preparation: Mix the flour, salt, curry powder, and cayenne pepper together in a large bowl. Add the scallops to the bowl and toss the mixture together until the scallops are completely coated in the spiced flour mixture. Melt the butter in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add the scallops to the butter and sauté them, turning once, until they are golden on both sides, about 4 minutes; transfer the scallops to a plate and cover to keep warm. Add the mushrooms and onions to the skillet and sauté, stirring frequently, over medium-high heat for 4 minutes, until they start to turn light brown. Add the wine to the pan and scrape the bottom of the pan with a spatula to get all the brown bits off the pan and into the sauce. Reduce the heat slightly and simmer until the sauce has reduced by half. Remove from the heat and stir in the Cognac and scallops. Preheat the oven broiler. Divide the scallop and sauce mixture between 6 scallop shells or ovenproof serving dishes. Mix together the bread crumbs, melted butter, and Gruyere cheese; divide the mixture evenly over each dish of scallops. Place the dishes about 5-6 inches from the broiler and cook until the scallop mixture is bubbly, and browned on top. Sprinkle with lemon juice, serve immediately.

Jorgen Berthelsen has been running the boarding kennel since November 2009, but is now moving back to Denmark. ‘Due to family illness, life in Spain has changed dramatically and it has made me rethink my priorities,’ said Jorgen. ‘It has been a wonderful and exciting time working with my favourite pets, namely dogs. More than 160 different dogs have been in my care, of which a huge number have been regular visitors. ‘I would like to say a big thank you to all the adorable doggies and their kind owners for their loyal support through the years’. But Jorgen leaving does not mean the end for Las Nenas Kennels. ‘I am extremely pleased to announce that as from April 1, Las Nenas Kennels will be taken over by my fellow countryman, Luffe Sorensen,’ he added. ‘It also means that the current premises will close, and the kennels will move to new facilities in Puente don Manuel. I have known Luffe for many years now, and I am absolutely convinced that he will maintain the usual standards of keeping your pet safe, happy and cared for.’

As well as the daily walks, there is plenty of time to stimulate and play with all my visiting dogs – some of them might even fancy a try-out at the agility course, just to add more fun and motivation!’. The newly-built kennels are located just outside Puente don Manuel on the Alcaucín road – easy to find and easy accessible. The premises have a large enclosed play area, a covered area and separate pens, all built to a high standard, sheltered from the rain and heavy winds and protected from the sun. ‘I welcome those clients already familiar with the services and high standards of Las Nenas Kennels,’ says Luffe. ‘Visitors coming for a viewing and more information are also welcome. I will be happy to guide all guests to the kennels, and provide a collection and delivery service.’ Please call Luffe on: 693 241 013 or email: luffelene@gmail.com

It’s Just A Matter Of Opinion On Fashion Through the eyes of one of our readers I was sitting having a cup of coffee the other day when I happened to notice a good-looking girl in her early 20s walking past me. As she got closer, I saw what appeared to me to be a physical deformity to her face, but then as she walked past I saw what can only be described as a metal bolt through her nose. Here's the bit I don't understand! In what part of her dysfunctional brain did she think that this enhanced her beauty? I suppose if I’d asked her she would have said, “This is to assert my femininity and enhance my self esteem as a citizen of this planet.” There again, in the manner of modern teenagers, she probably would have looked at me and just gone “Duh!” This got me thinking about fashion and just what a con it is. How many times has your wife been to a party or function and thought to herself, “God, that dress looks a mess. Why on earth is she wearing it? Did her husband not tell her?” Look, let’s get one thing straight before we start. Husbands are the last people they should ever ask. Do you honestly believe that there is a man on this planet who is brave enough to say, “Darling, your dress looks like a dog’s regurgitated dinner.” But the thing is, other women may be looking at you and thinking the same thing about your dress! Just what part of our brain tells us we look good in what we choose to wear? Whatever part it is, they should start looking for a cure! Here's another example. Women have been painting their toe and finger nails since before Cleopatra was born, but which idiot came to the conclusion that black finger and toe nails were a thing of beauty? Did some famous diva vaguely remember that she once saw her mother’s hand after she had trapped it in a car door and thought, “I will try that colour at my next premiere?” Then because she did it, the rest of womanhood fell into line. Is some women sitting there getting dressed and thinking the rest of her clothes may be from the 1990s, but because her toe and finger nails are black, that she is the height of fashion? Tattoos: that's another thing I do not understand. Do women not realise that the picture of a small butterfly on her left breast will turn into a vulture attacking her left kneecap by the time she is over 60? My dad had tattoos; he was a miner. When he was over 60 and his skin had

gone a bit slack, that picture of a mermaid looked like a dead haddock. We have all sat and watched as the great and famous have lined up to go into some premiere or other. Now, these are women who you would think would have some ideas regarding fashion. Noooo! Even these divas seem to have some vital part of their brain missing. Their bodies are adorned with dresses that cost thousands of pounds. Yet how many times have you thought. “Christ, she looks a mess; her husband should have said something!” If we look like a dog’s breakfast, we have an excuse – but these people have dressers. They spend hours getting the design and fit just right. They are surrounded by people whose job it is to make them look good. The cut may be fabulous. The tailoring may be beyond reproach, but they still look like reject from “A day in the life of a hermit.” As I said before, most humans appear to have this strange deficiency in their brain function when it comes to how they should dress. We can see it in others, but when we look in the

It’s Just A Matter Of Opinion On Fashion mirror, we cannot see it in ourselves. Although the average person has two arms, two legs and a body to join it all together, this is where the similarity ends. As a life form, you must admit we are an odd-shaped lot and as we get older, it gets even worse. My boobs are now bigger than the wife's for a start, yet the fashion industry still insists I am still 11 stone and the wife is eight stone. I want something that will cover my belly, not enhance it! (The wife suggested a coffin lid.) Just why do some people have to keep up with fashion? It may be that you suited last year’s colour and style, but this year’s makes you look like the hunchback of Notre Dame’s long lost brother. Yet there they are, stuffing their bodily partials into items of clothing that would probably look better on a orangutan – and what is the difference between last year’s style and this year’s anyway? A tuck here; make the skirt one inch shorter there. Think about it! Have styles changed that much in the past few years? Designer gear. Some people seem to be under

the impression that if they cover their complete torso in this form of clothing, they will automatically look good. Let's say you take two pairs of shoes: one pair at 40 pounds and another at 650 pounds. Both pairs look alike, except the expensive pair have slightly higher heels and are slightly narrower. This is, of course, guaranteed to send bolts of lightning up her legs after one hour’s use, but this one comes in a box that says “Jimmy Choo.” To make matters more confusing , both pairs are probably made in the same factory in China. If she had the choice, which would your wife choose? It’s a no brainer isn't it! I have noticed lately that Roman sandals seem to be the in thing. OK! Some women do suit them, but others – give them a spear and a shield and they could probably invade Glasgow and conquer it . By now, some of you may be thinking “What gives this apology of the male gender the right to say such things, and exactly what makes him such an expert?” OK, here is my CV. I am over 60 and I am also the opposite of a fashion guru. I wake up in the morning, give my T-shirt a sniff and think, “Yep, that will last another day” and when “Robot Wars” comes on the TV, I know it is time to change my underpants. I know for a fact that no matter what type of clothes I wear I will have the sex appeal of a tin of Andrews Liver Salts, as with most men of my age. I just leave it up to the wife to deck me out in any apparel that she thinks is suitable. This is because I can guarantee whatever I choose is wrong. As you get older, they say that certain brain cells start to die. It may be like that with me – the part of the brain that used to tell me that I looked good in skin-tight trousers and thick-soled beetle crusher shoes has now died. But this destructive brain cell hasn’t died completely – every so often, when I am being dragged around the shops, I will pick something up and think “I may not look too bad in this.” But then reality sets in and I gently place it back on the shelf and carry on walking. So if any of you women out there need any advice on what you look good in – and what makes you look like a dog’s dinner – give me a bell. Somehow I think the only people phoning me will be the husbands – not the wives! Written by A Grumpy Old Geordie

Her father was largely responsible for the project getting completed. She starred in the TV sitcom ‘My Family’ alongside another accomplished Shakespearean actor, Robert Lindsay, from 2000 to 2011. Her film credits include the Harry Potter series.

She was awarded the CBE in 2001 for her services to drama. She also received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of East Anglia in 2012. Onestone There once was an Indian who had only one testicle and whose given name was 'Onestone'. He hated that name and asked everyone not to call him Onestone. After years and years of torment, Onestone finally cracked and said,'If anyone calls me Onestone again I will kill them!' The word got around and nobody called him that any more. Then one day a young woman named Blue Bird forgot and said, ‘Good morning, Onestone.' He jumped up, grabbed her and took her deep into the forest where he made love to her all day and all night. He made love to her all the next day, Until Blue Bird died from exhaustion. The word got around that Onestone meant what he promised he would do. Years went by and no one dared call him by his given name until a woman named Yellow Bird returned to the village after being away. Yellow Bird, who was BlueBird's cousin, was

overjoyed when she saw Onestone. She hugged him and said, 'Good to see you, Onestone.' Onestone grabbed her, took her deep into the forest, then he made love to her all day, made love to her all night, made love to her all the next day, made love to her all the next night, but YellowBird wouldn't die. Why ? OH, come on. Take a guess. Think about it. Everyone knows... you can't kill two Birds with OneStone!!

tors recommend staying away from dairy and fatty foods while including a high intake of fibre in your diet. We’re constantly consuming toxins, whether it is from drinks or food, and your liver is responsible for clearing these toxins out of your body. Apples are one of the best—and easiest— things you can eat to help detoxify your liver.

Biting and chewing an apple stimulates the production of saliva in your mouth, reducing tooth decay by lowering the levels of bacteria; this can mean whiter teeth! A new study performed on mice shows that drinking apple juice could keep Alzheimer’s away and fight the effects of ageing on the brain. Research has shown that people who eat fruits and other high-fibre foods gain a certain amount of protection against Parkinson’s. Scientists agree that the consumption of flavonol-rich apples could help reduce your risk of developing pancreatic cancer by up to 23 per cent.

Women who eat at least one apple a day are 28 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who don’t eat apples. Apples are loaded with soluble fibre, the key to blunting blood sugar swings. The soluble fibre found in apples binds with fats in the intestine, which translates into lower cholesterol levels The phenolic compound found in apple skins prevents the cholesterol that gets into your system from solidifying on your artery walls, therefore helping guard against heart disease. Eating apples can help prevent gallstones. The fibre found in apples can help in cases of diarrhoea –and constipation. Fibre can either pull water out of your colon to keep things moving along when you’re backed up, or absorb excess water from your stool to slow your bowels down. The Virgin Moo-ry Mystery as cow falls pregnant without bull present A Buckinghamshire farm has experienced its very own immaculate cow-nception. Farmers were left scratching their heads after a cow gave birth - but with no bull present. Harriet the Dexter cow shocked staff at Pinewood Nurseries in Stoke Poges, Bucks, when it gave birth to Petal. None were more shocked than owner Liz Robinson. The 30year-old said: “Petal is our very own moo-siah.” “We had absolutely no idea Harriet was pregnant until she woke us up in labour. “She didn’t look any different to the others – just another fat cow. “We have never bred cows at the nursery so we don’t have any bulls. “We weren’t told Harriet was pregnant when we bought her so when Petal arrived we were all stumped.” The calf was named Petal after flowers grown at the nursery. The family venue is ran by Liz alongside her husband Tom and sister Maria Jackson. In the 10 years they have run the business, they have never had a bull on the site.

Liz added: “One of the cows woke Tom up with their loud lowing. “He rushed down to see what was going on. “When he got there Harriet was in the middle of labour and that was the first we knew. “We thought some of the others might have been pregnant, but we’ve had no babies since.”

males live with females and group spawn. In other words, both the initial and terminal phase males can breed; they differ however in the way they do it. These fish form leks while breeding. A lek is an aggregation of males that gather to engage in competitive displays that may entice visiting females who are surveying prospective partners for copulation. Leks are commonly formed before or during the breeding season And finally….. no. No-one knows why the slippery dick was given this name!

The slippery dick – an aggressive, carnivorous fish – is a species of wrasse, native to shallow, tropical waters where it lives in the coral or rocky reefs. The cigar-shaped species has three colour phases: adults have two dark to black lateral stripes, one extending from the snout and via the eye to the base of the tail, with a second, paler lateral stripe further below. The upper stripe incorporates a bicoloured spot where it crosses the edge of the gills (this is present in all phases). Intermediates vary greatly, from shades of light purple to dark brown. Juveniles are usually white and have two dark stripes, but the lower (abdominal) stripe may be faint. The slippery dick reaches about 35 cm (14 in) in total length. This species can be found from North Carolina and Bermuda to Brazil, the Gulf of Mexico, Antilles and the coasts of Central and South America. It is generally found on shallow reefs and grass beds at depths from 1 to 15 m (3.3 to 49.2 ft). This species feeds on benthic invertebrates, including crabs, sea urchins and ophiuroids, as well as polychaetes and gastropods. It is a protogynous hermaphrodite, which means it is born female and at some point in its lifespan, it changes sex to male; this happens as it ages and the timing is based on internal or external triggers. Male fecundity increases greatly with age, unlike female. Large males hold territories and try to pair spawn while small to mid-size initial-phase

Techno World Woman sends email complaining to tech support. She didn’t expect this response Dear Tech Support Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in overall system performance particulary in the flower and jewellery application, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs. such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0 and Folf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs and Jouse cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5. to fix these problems, but to no avail. What can I do? Signed, Desperate -----------------------------------------Dear Desperate First, keep in mind that Boyfriend 5.0 is an entertainment package while husband 1.0 is an operating system. Please enter the command: I thought you loved me.html, download Tears 6.2 and be sure to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If those applications work as designed Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. However, please remember that overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to sefault to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1. Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta. Whatever you do DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-in-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.) In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. This is an unsupported application and will crash Husband 1.0. In summary. Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performace. We recommend Cooking 3.0 ans Hot Lingerie 7.7. Tech Support

New Poetry Corner Poetry for spring Skies of porcelain and sapphire sprawl on the grass And rest behind the cooling trees as time will pass. The sun is still, listening to the singing birds bring, While lazy ladybirds read the poetry of spring; Golden specks of sweet honey float on waves of pure air, Gently blown from the white flowers that paint the land fair, Below lay thick fruits in rainbow colours like gems that fell, From heaven’s trees, And have a heavenly taste as well. A river shines alongside, transparent, fresh and new, Sounds of tinkling bells and flutes the water seems to do, Fine and smooth crystals lay while radiant trout play above, Glory to the spring luxury, our season of love. A free bird flies and stops next to my inspiration, Comes closer, looks at me in the eye, then turns and thinks. In that moment, I understood our relation; I, write and belong, from and for nature, Hiding, as one more timid creature, From a participant observation, Spring is my muse, but also my teacher. Readers Writes Thoughts from one of our readers I grew up on a farm way up in the northeastern part of Montana, USA. Our closest neighbours were a mile and a half away in the town of Richland, which had a grand population of 80. It had a grocery store, a gas station, a post office, a church and a railway station surrounded by scattered houses along a very short main street. Overlooking all of it was the school, situated atop the only hill in town. It had two classrooms with grades 1-4 in the room to the right and grades 5-8 in the room to the left. Like so many schools, once a week we had “show and tell”. We took turns bringing things to school to tell the class about them. One day my best friend, Sally, brought her portable record player and her new single that she had just got. She played it for us – “Baby Elephant Walk.” When the last note had died out our teacher rose, smiling, and invited us all to go next door to his house. Once there he put the record on his player. “I thought it might be fun for you to hear it in stereo,” he said.

We had all heard “Baby Elephant Walk” on the radio, but back in those days it wasn’t normal for the stations to transmit in stereo, so what we had heard was the mono version. When the first notes came out of Mr. Martin’s stereo system, I was transfixed. I had thought of it as a fun melody, but what I heard now was deep and rich, clear and bright – and incredibly beautiful. The bells in the treble and the deep bass were things that no mono system could transmit, much less do justice. I wasn’t aware of it then, but that little melody was to become a symbol of life to me. The chimes and high notes represent the good times – the laughter, the love, the happiness – while the bass represents sorrow, grief and pain – the hard times when life throws you a low blow. We can often be tempted to try to avoid these times – even the ecstasy, for fear of having to pay for it with pain. But would we be able to appreciate the good times without having the bad to compare them with? Is the middle road – the safe one – really the one we want to live? Is just existing enough? To me it would be like listening to “The Baby Elephant Walk” in mono. It would probably be an OK life, but the tough times and the joy add new dimensions and life becomes a beautiful symphony – sometimes hard as nails with the bass crashing down about you, and sometimes so joyous that you’d think that you’d never come down off that high. I’m privileged. I’ll be 60 next birthday and I have some living to look back on. To my surprise it’s the hard times I appreciate most because they’ve acted as a trampoline, building strength and endurance into me and sending me up to frolic among all those wonderful highs. So I don’t worry when I have a bad day; it just means that there’s a lot of fun up ahead. Life is an incredible gift, full of love, laughter, tears and joy, just waiting to be embraced in its entirety. When we do that, it becomes a piece of art, full of symphonic beauty so great that it takes your breath away. So take a chance. Take a look. You could discover the wonderful world of you. Film iew Rev Annie This new version of the Broadway musical is the first since the 1999 ABC TV version, and the only theatrical movie version since 1982. And it’s still "Annie," a deeply American story about reinvention and striving, survival and dreams. This Annie is a foster child living in an apartment with other foster children rather than an "orphan" as described in other versions. And she's been situated within a universe that's contemporary, but which connects forcefully with the Depression-era landscapes of the stage musical and the other films. All were about maintaining one's optimism in the face of personal misfortune exacerbated by a vast gap between rich and poor; they were about the difficulty of staying sensible, and sensitive, in a world in which everyone but the very wealthy had to struggle constantly. Wallis is impossible not to like; she plays Annie as she should be played – a smart, tough kid without an unkind thought in her head, and

when her resolve finally crumbles in the face of one disappointment too many, your heart sinks with hers. The supporting cast is equally fine. The only weak link is Cameron Diaz as the cynical, cunning foster mum and systemgamer Miss Hannigan, a onetime wannabe R&B star, but she lacks the exuberant crudeness and vampy joy that every other Hannigan has brought to the part. This "Annie" won't win any awards for subtlety or filmmaking elegance. But a great deal of imagination has been put into it, along with a lot of heart. Star Rating: ***/*****

Moorish fortress and the Cathedral built during the 16th to 18th centuries over a Moorish mosque. ) : a h a Jokes h An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow." The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked, what happened and the man explained. "Well, doc, it's like this, first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door, and she tried too. First with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezin' it between her knees, but still nothing." The doctor was shocked! "You asked your neighbour?" The old man replied, "Yep, none of us could get the jar open." ------------------------------------------------------------An Italian, a Frenchman, and an Englishman were discussing screams of passion . . . The Italian said: "Last night I massaged my wife all over her body with the finest extra virgin olive oil, then we made passionate love and I made her scream, non-stop, for five minutes." The Frenchman said: "Last night I massaged my wife all over her body with special aphrodisiac oil from Provence and then we made passionate love. I made her scream for fifteen minutes." The Englishman said: That's nothing! Last night I massaged my wife all over her body with a special butter. I caressed her entire body with the butter, and then made love and I made her scream for two long hours."

The Italian and Frenchman, astonished, asked, "Two full hours? Wow! That's phenomenal, what did you do it to make her scream for two hours?" The Englishman replied: "I wiped my hands on the curtains." ------------------------------------------------------------Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter. The pharmacist at the counter asked the older boy, "Son, how old are you?' 'Eight', the boy replied. The man continued, 'Do you know what these are used for?' The boy replied, 'Not exactly, but they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four." "Oh, really?" the pharmacist replied with a grin. "Yes." the boy said. "We saw on TV that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike. Right now, he can't do none of those." ------------------------------------------------------------I don't know why people keep getting worked up about immigration. All my neighbours are English. All the kids in the local school are English All the local shops are owned and run by English people I love it here in Spain! ------------------------------------------------------------A dying grandma tells her grandchild, "I want to leave you my farm. That includes the barn, livestock, the harvest, the tractor, and other equipment, the farmhouse and â‚Ź24,548,750.45 in cash." The grandchild, absolutely floored and about to become rich says, "Oh grandma, you are SO generous! I didn't even know you had a farm. Where is it?" With her last breath, Grandma whispered, "Facebook..."

Step two: Next you want to take 2 trips of 1,000 apples 500 miles. You will be left with 1,000 apples and 167 miles to go (you have to leave an apple behind). Step three: Finally, you travel the last 167 miles with one load of 1,000 apples and are left with 833 apples in Bananaville. 2. Answer: hemlock. 3. Answer: You could drop it at floor 1 first (because you start at floor 1). Then you would go to the floors: 14, 27, 39, 50, 60, 69, 77, 84, 90, 95, 99, and 100.
