At last, after months of driving the roads of Spain illegally, a Spanish driving license is on its way into my glove compartment! English people can usually get away with using an English driving license, even if they have taken residency in Spain. But if the photocard expires (like mine did five months ago), then that’s when problems can arise. I no longer have a UK address so I had to be honest and admit that I was now a resident in Spain. The DVLA staff told me they couldn’t do anything more and that I’d have to seek assistance from the Spanish authorities. Pah! And like many things of an ‘official’ nature in Spain, that wasn’t an easy task. Firstly, I rang the trafico department, who told me they couldn’t help. Then I rang a couple of other trafico-related people who said they couldn’t help either. More like they didn’t WANT to help…! In the end I had no choice but to go directly to the trafico office in Malaga City with a bag-full of every document they might ask for. And fortunately it all went surprisingly well. I had to pay 26€ for tax and 30€ for a medical certificate, which involved a fake eye sight test, a blood pressure check and a reflex test which involved having my knees banged with something that looked like a hammer. I also had to fill in a few forms….And that was pretty much it. The man behind the desk said someone

Linea Directa Is my driving licence valid in Spain? In addition, when the licence is renewed in Spain, the holder will be automatically registered in the “Registro General de Conductores” and he or she will be assigned the validity period corresponding to age and the type of permit held. Obligatory and voluntary exchange A resident can voluntarily exchange his or her driving licence in Spain, in which case he or she will be automatically registered in the aforementioned “Registro General de Conductores”. In this case, the foreign driver must also undergo a medical examination. However, it is not obligatory for the driver to carry the certificate showing that he or she has passed the psychophysical test as part of the vehicle’s documentation. A valid vehicle registration certificate (“permiso de circulación”) fulfilling the aforementioned requirement is sufficient proof of this. In Spain, there are only three situations in which a foreign resident is obliged to exchange his or her driving licence: When, in accordance with Spanish legislation, the vehicle or the driver is subject to changes, restrictions or limitations. When the driver has lost points on his or her licence after committing an offence. When a driving licence must be declared void or detrimental. De Cotta Bankruptcy and debt enforcement in the UK & Spain by Rob Westwater - an English Lawyer with De Cotta McKenna y Santafé A number of expats living in Spain leave debts in the UK. Some people will take advice about how this may affect them and whether their creditors can pursue them in Spain. If there has been a declaration of bankruptcy in the UK, the Trustee in bankruptcy will normally be able to make a claim against Spanish property. There are provisions in the Insolvency Act to allow the trustee to seek orders over assets abroad. Unfortunately many people think that a declaration of bankruptcy will mean that their creditors do not pursue them for their debts. However the debts do not “go away” and the bankrupt person is restricted in things such as commencing new businesses and taking up directorships. Another possible course of action in English law is applying for an IVA or Individual Voluntary Arrangement. This is an arrangement entered into for payments to creditors and is supervised by an Insolvency practitioner. Provided this is successful it can prevent the debtor from losing their home and / or their business. Specialist advice can be sought from insolvency practitioners. Whether you have been running a business in the UK, or you have debts with credit card providers and banks, there is a lot of advice and help available. Sometimes independent legal and or accounting advice can help to focus on those debts that can be negotiated, and the worst possible solution is to ignore the letters from creditors. If you have moved to Spain and are concerned about whether creditors can pursue you and seek enforcement of debts against Spanish property, a consultation with a lawyer would be advisable. Very often it is best to seek advice when you arrive in Spain if you are concerned about debts you have left in the UK. With the boot on the other foot, it is also important to know what you can do to recover debts owed to you either by private individuals or by businesses. If you are owed money and you can prove the debt,

then you can seek enforcement of the debt through the courts whether the debtor is in the UK or Spain. Documentary evidence of the debt is important and lawyers normally carry out a property search against the debtor to see how any successful judgement can be enforced. The procedure within the EC is now much more effective and faster in dealing with service of documents and the enforcement of orders from different European countries and in this respect the distance between Spain and the UK is getting shorter. Visitors A little bit of sunshine and everybody has started to come out of hibernation. It seems that winter is finally over and spring is slowly starting to shine through. People are getting out and about again and visitors are starting to arrive. Easter brought us many newcomers and the cheaper flights after the holidays continued to entice many. At La Vaqueria we have been overwhelmed by the number of visitors, all gratefully received. But, I have to say, none quite as extraordinary as Mark, who came to see us last month all the way from the USA! His journey started in Florida where he lives; an internal flight to New York then across the Atlantic to Madrid where he changed for the last leg down to Malaga and finally a taxi to Benamargosa. He spent three days with us, carving every day with Jorge, before returning. He has vowed to return as soon as possible and everybody who met him is looking forward to that. As a gift he brought me the most wonderful cookbook entitled ‘Recipes from Marlborough Country; home cooked food traditionally for the open trail’. This has already made a delightful addition to many of our menus at La Vaqueria. The Friday night ladies have enjoyed cornbreads with

their spicy beans and pepper salads and morning coffees may never be the same again without the yummy red devils food cake…Absolutely to die for! As the weather warmed up we noticed a drop in the number of bookings for curry nights, so please note that the monthly foodie feast is now on the first Saturday of each month and it may well be curry, tex-mex, barbecue or buffet… You decide. The first people to book each month may choose! With the garden looking lovely you may eat in or out, bring your friends, meet new friends and enjoy a lovely informal evening. "People can come and buy original arts and crafts, be inspired, or simply enjoy looking at nice things." Asked why he opened a gallery so far from the well-beaten tourist routes he replied, "I'm definitely not in it for the money! I spent my working life in the advertising business. Everything was rush, rush, rush. It took me a while to slow down after I retired and then I decided to try and improve my art. Along the way I became captivated by the ancient art of mosaics. It's a bit like painting with Lego bricks. Anyway, before long I decided to come to Spain. After the compulsory six months of drinking, eating and not knowing or caring what day of the week it was, I decided to get down to some work. I have spare space in my

home so it seemed like a good idea to show some of my work there." It took Ken longer than he thought to get his gallery up and running and it now includes work by many artists. The range of items on display include modern and traditional artwork, jewellery, glassware, furniture, crafts and mosaic work. "I feel a little out of time trying to promote arts and crafts," said Ken. "Everything seems to be 'Made in China' and, like the pioneers of the late 19th century arts and crafts movement, I feel that craftsmen and artists of Andalusia should be given a platform to display their skills. A friend came and stayed with me recently and renamed the town 'Riogorgeous'. She's absolutely spot on and I'm very happy to contribute to the village life." Tiffany´s Roast Dinners Last month I went for a Sunday Roast at Tiffanys, in Puente don Manuel. I’d heard some pretty good reports about their dinners, so I thought I’d give them a try. I booked a table a couple of days in advance, as if you do this you get a free drink! ‘My significant other’ and I were told the choices and prices. It was 10.95€ for two courses; either a starter and a main or a main and a dessert. All starters and desserts are homemade so I knew right there and then that I would really enjoy this meal. I haven’t got a sweet tooth, so I ordered homemade paté from a choice of mushrooms stuffed with Roquefort, or a coronation chicken salad. The wife went for the mushrooms. My paté was superb, very flavorsome and there was plenty of toast to accompany it. The mushrooms were of the flat variety and were sat on a bed of salad, dripping with cheese. “Delightful”, the missus said after devouring the lot! We had pre-ordered pork and lamb for the

mains. Annie, the owner, explained that she always bought the best joints of meat, no matter what the cost. This was clearly evident as both meats were fantastic. They were succulent and tender and fell off the fork. With the meat, came roasted and mashed potatoes, three veg including my all-time favourite, ‘swede and carrot’ mash, appropriate sauces and red wine gravy. All this came served on big rectangular plates, presented in a pretty manner. When every scrap was eaten, the wife couldn’t help but ask what desserts were on offer. There was homemade apple crumble pie, sticky toffee pudding, jam sponge and cherry pie, all served with ice cream or cream. She chose the apple pie and I have to say I’ve never seen her eat so much! All in all the Tiffany’s Sunday Roast is not the cheapest, nor is it the most expensive, but one thing’s for sure – it’s right up there with the best I’ve tasted since my Mum’s of course!!

Art Workshop In Coloured Pencils

Red discharge from a rat's nose or eyes is usually porphyrin, not blood. Unlike blood, porphyrin is flourescent under UV light. It is produced in glands behind the rat's eyes. Overproduction of this discharge can be caused by stress or illness.

Ursula Williams, a self-taught Peruvian artist, will be delivering a series of workshops in coloured pencils and their use in the fine arts, in English and Spanish, from 22nd May.

A happy rat will chatter or grind its teeth. Often, chattering teeth results in "vibrating" eyes, caused by the lower jawbone pressing the backs of the eyes. This is a good sign, regardless of how silly it looks. Rats bathe themselves, usually six times a day or more. Rats have bellybuttons. Rats can be trained to do simple tricks.

The workshops will take place in privately owned villas in the Axarquia region, and are aimed at people who are interested in developing their creativity. Mind, Body, Spirit Hello. This month I’d like to introduce some of the basic principles of MindBody health & healing and respond to some of the letters you have sent in. A key concept is that physical symptoms and behavioural “disorders” are the result of deeper rooted imbalances or conflicts operating at the emotional level, and that these may stem from negative beliefs and thought patterns, which our minds are unconsciously “transmitting” to our bodies. We are all individuals, so while I can offer general advice as to the causes of health problems, getting to their specific root is a personal issue best addressed with the help of a therapist. (Q) "I have an itchy red rash on my arm which my doctor says is eczema. She prescribed me a cream, but it seems to be getting worse rather than better. Any ideas what might be causing it, or suggestions for an alternative cure?" Mrs Fletcher, Nerja (A) Generally speaking, skin rashes stem from suppressed emotional energy “venting” through the skin. Often this comes from deep hurt or anger, which has its origins in childhood or infancy and has been “buried” in the unconscious or cellular memory. Its persistent and irritating presence may have been triggered by a more recent stressful event. This acts as a wake-up call to address the original issue, which may be affecting other areas of your life and relationships as well. A pharmaceutical cream usually contains anti-histamines or cortisone, and even if it does succeed in clearing up the rash, will only force the underlying energy to find another

outlet, and may produce unpleasant side effects. A less aggressive herbal based cream may help reduce the itching, but a lasting cure requires getting to the root of the underlying emotional issue. Going into these cellular memories to heal the root cause is difficult on your own, and it is best undertaken with the help of a skilled therapist. However it is worth the effort and it will bring about improvement not only of the skin condition, but of your general health and happiness as well. (Q) "I have an eating disorder. Space doesn’t permit me to explain how such chronic emotional states can be healed and transformed, but I will return to this issue in next month’s edition. Excellent News :) In August 2009, Fletcher, a 3 year old little boy from Torrox, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of life threatening brain cancer. His father Noel, made a heart-rending appeal, through various local publications, for funds to enable Fletcher to undergo a costly vital life-saving proton therapy, in Florida USA. At least 130,000€ was needed. Many folk, and various organisations responded to this appeal, both in Spain and the UK. Members and friends of Torre del Mar Evangelical Church combined with those at Torrox Park Community Church, held various fund-raising events including a bring and buy, coffee morning, cheese & wine evening and an auction. Raising a total of 700€. We were delighted to hear of Fletcher’s positive progress and eventual return to Torrox, in December. We were kept updated by reading the online diary found at www.friendsoffletcher.com Members of the church-linked Craft Group felt that the last few months had been hard for Fletcher’s big sister, Shannon. It can’t be easy for an 8 year old to deal with all the stress that is placed upon a sibling when a younger member of the family isvery sick and therefore receives all the focus of family. Each member of the group took away their square and character and appliquéd the design as they chose, making the completed quilt varied & unique. On Thursday April 1st the quilt was presented to a delighted Shannon at a Coffee Morning and ‘Bring and Buy’ held at El Trapicho in Torrox Park, the regular meeting place of the Torrox Park Community Church, thanks to the generosity of Joe Livingstone from El Pino Restaurant. It was a wonderful morning, and we were delighted to meet the whole family, parents Noel and Andrea, Shannon and of course little Fletcher and share their concerns and joys at Fletcher’s progress. Our thanks to all who brought items for sale including delicious homemade cakes. We raised 167€ for CUDECA the local hospice charity. An update from Andrea Falvey: “Fletcher has been at the local Spanish school since January and at the moment he is doing well. He has to have an MRI scan every 2 months and so far he has had 2 since the end of treatment and they have both come back clear. It will be a few months yet we can see if the treatment has been successful as it’s still very early on. Fletcher needs some further treatment to correct some damage from surgery to his eyes and also he will need some physiotherapy to help with his balance problems. At the same time though, he has come on leaps and bounds since we got back from America, his talking and his little personality, he is a pleasure to be around. I’m very proud of how well both my children have coped with what has been the most difficult 8 months of our lives. The support that we have had from friends, family and the people of Torrox has been amazing and we are forever grateful for that. There is a long way to go for us but we are feeling hopeful for the future”.
