Welcome to the May edition of The Sentinella. So much has changed since this time last year — let’s be honest, we could hardly do anything last summer with all events being cancelled — so fingers crossed that this springtime we are getting some events popping up around the area. How much better to find them by subscribing to our NEW events calendar on the ‘NEW Sentinella Website’ www.thesentinella.com Go to the events heading at the top of the page and click ‘subscribe’, add your email address, then any new events that we add will be sent directly to your email. This means no more having to search Facebook and scroll for hours on end — we do the hard work for you, so you just have it delivered to you ‘on a plate’ as the saying goes! If you have not already had a look at our new website, please visit www.thesentinella.com. There are hundreds of listings, lots of up-to-date useful blog posts, events and even a local webcam of Torre del Mar so you can see what the weather is like on the coast if you live inland or further away. If you have used a business that we have listed and would like to leave a review, this option is also available so please do make use of it.

Look out for the coupons and offers on some of the listings as shown below. They are easily spotted with their red banner; simply click on

DEADLINE FOR JUNE WEDNESDAY 19TH MAY Reservations: 664 210 468 Email: sales@thesentinella.com

Mother hen When a farmer heard some strange sounds coming from his chicken coop, he feared that the animals might be in danger. But upon closer inspection, Kurdish farmer and soldier Goran A Surchi realised he was hearing meowing. When the farmer lifted up one of the hens, he discovered three adorable kittens. They were orphaned and had found a home with the hen, which provided love and warmth as a surrogate parent. The kittens’ own mum had drowned in a lake near the farm and Goran had found the cat’s lifeless body. He was surprised to see the hen had somehow understood this and taken the kittens in. Goran shared the incredible scenes on his TikTok, where the video has been watched more than 300,000 times. Machine mayhem A Scottish Mum thought a bomb had gone off at home when her washing machine ‘literally exploded’ mid-cycle. Laura Birrell shared shocking images of the destruction in the kitchen after her Indesit machine ‘blew up’ in Glasgow, and warned people not to go out and leave their machines on. The manufacturers are investigating the incident, which Laura said left debris scattered around her kitchen, which was filled with smoke. The businesswoman took pictures of the scene, which show the bunker top above the washing machine seeming to have imploded. The top cover of the machine has also been blown apart, leaving large chunks of plastic and glass scattered across the floor. Laura claims the machine drum inside the appliance exploded upwards through her worktop and draining board. She shared the images on Facebook as a warning to others about leaving their washing machine on when they are not at home.

Strange News (Continued)

Crate ordeal A pensioner from Cardiff is looking for two Irishmen who helped him escape Australia by mailing him off in a wooden crate. Brian Robson — now 75 — was 19 years old when he decided to go ahead with the ‘stupid’ plan to get home to Wales in 1965. After 11 months Down Under, he was feeling desperately homesick but the £40 a month he made working for Victorian Railways wasn’t nearly enough to cover a £700 plane ticket. But after being talked into it for about a week, two Irish friends and colleagues, known to Brian only as Paul and John, helped pack him into a box ‘the size of a mini-fridge’. They nailed it shut and sent him off as cargo on a Qantas flight from Melbourne to London – at least that was the plan. Into the tiny box, Brian brought with him pillows, a torch, his suitcase, a book of Beatles songs and two bottles – one for water and the other for urine. Brian spent 96 hours in a crate before he was rumbled by the FBI in Los Angeles.

MANZ PVC WINDOWS & DOORS

Brian wasn’t expecting a luxurious trip, but what should have been a 36-hour direct flight ended up as a four-day ordeal. The Qantas flight was full so the crate, labelled by the escapee as containing a ‘computer’, was put on a much slower PanAm flight that ended up in Los Angeles. Brian said, ‘The aircraft’s hold was both freezing cold and boiling hot and I struggled to breathe during the journey. When the plane landed, I was left upside down for 22 hours, despite several ‘this side up’ labels on the crate, causing me to suffer blackouts.’ He was interrogated by the FBI, who wanted to make sure he wasn’t a Cold War spy. Once they were satisfied he wasn’t a threat, authorities decided not to press charges, instead flying him to London on a regular commercial flight. Brian says he had written to Paul and John to thank them for their help, but never heard back from them. He remembers that the pair went to school together in Ireland, although he isn’t quite sure where.

interesting Facts... Portugal is the oldest country in Europe. In 1139, Portugal appointed King Afonso Henriques as its king. Lisbon is said to be four centuries older than Rome. Due to its excellent trading location, the Phoenicians settled in Lisbon around 1200 BC.

Portugal holds the record for the shortest and longest-reigning monarchs. Henrique of Portugal was the king of Portugal for more than 73 years. Luis Filipe, on the other hand, was king for only 20 minutes.

In 1494, the Treaty of Tordesillas was signed which essentially gave Portugal the eastern half of the "New Word", including Brazil, Africa, and Asia. The Portuguese Empire was actually the first global empire in history and one of the longest-lived colonial powers, lasting for almost six centuries from when Ceuta was captured in 1415, until Macau (now China) was handed-over in 1999. Portugal produces 70% of the world's cork exports. Main importers of Portuguese cork are: Germany, the UK and the US. The country also has the largest cork forest.

Summer Fun

Ways to beat summer boredom (for kids)

1. Write a story... writing can take you to magical places if you let your imagination run free. Write about a place you have never been and describe what you imagine it to be. Write fun and crazy descriptions and make up silly characters. 2. Make a card for someone special. Make several cards and decorate them with dried flowers, rainbows, or dragons. Sign your name and ask your mum or dad to drop them off or to send them to the local nursing home. A card could brighten the day for someone else AND help them to not be bored.

3. put on a neighbourhood circus or play. Plan a few simple games, dress up like clowns, and entertain your younger brother or sister or neighbours for an afternoon of imagination and fun. Just remember to clean up afterwards. 4. Get a blanket and some board games.

Find a shady place in your backyard and gather a friend or two. Play a board game and see how much fun it can be to play something that doesn't need batteries. Good games to play are Monopoly, Twister, Checkers, Uno, or Yatzee. 5. Do a random act of kindness for your mum, dad, or neighbour. It could be to weed a small garden, do a small cleaning job, carry in groceries, carry out the rubbish, sweep the garage, or a hundred other small jobs that would show someone you care. It could even be to play with or walk your neighbours pet. Doing something for others will almost always make you forget about being bored. Challenge yourself today and find something to do. Try to go the whole day long without saying the words "I'M BORED." And if you’re still bored try number 6. Tidy your room, have a complete clear out, you never know what you might find... now this will always keep you busy!

Monsters Are Real

Monday Billy didn't have his homework And when the teacher asked him why He said, ′′Because a monster tore it apart, After I told him a lie."

′′You know monsters don't exist, And if you don't turn in your homework No break you get”

Billy had a stomach ache on Tuesday And when the teacher asked him why He said: ′′A monster took my dinner, Even my ice cream."

′′Billy, I've told you once before, Monsters are not real. You'll have to wait till lunch Before you get a meal."

Billy had a connection on Wednesday, What his right eye covered. When the teacher asked him how it happened, This was his answer:

′′A monster ran behind me When I came across the door." ′′Billy please," said the teacher,

′′I don't want to hear anymore." Billy refused to sit down on Thursday. And when the teacher asked him why, Billy said: ′′A monster hit my bottom, Because I started crying,"

′′Billy,” said the teacher, ′′This is getting out of hand, And if you continue with these stories, In the corner you will stand."

Billy didn't come to school on Friday. And when the teacher found out why, She said a little prayer to God Hoping that Billy would survive.

Because a monster had beat Billy and threatened him with a knife. Now Billy was lying in a hospital bed, Fighting for his life.

So teachers please remember, That monsters are real. Listen carefully to children's stories, A wounded heart that you may heal

Funeral Celebrant - Wendy Sherwood

Planning a funeral can be difficult and overwhelming, particularly when they take place within 24-48 hours as they do in Spain.

I am Wendy Sherwood, Funeral Celebrant in Andalucia, Spain. I compose, write and deliver personalised funeral services for those who want to celebrate the life of someone lost. My goal is to provide you with the best possible service, so that you can rest assured during this difficult time that your final goodbye will be the best it can be. I became a celebrant because I was disappointed by my own family's funeral experience, and I knew there had to be a better way. It made me realise how important it is to have someone there who will listen to you, take note of what you and your family say, and take care of the service for you - from writing the eulogy to delivering it on your behalf, all while making sure that everyone feels included in the process.

You can have any music played at the service that is meaningful or special to them and to

you. Or, if they had specific spiritual beliefs we can include those too! We'll also work together on choosing readings or poems that are important for their story - it could be something from literature or even something they wrote themselves! And of course, there will be plenty of time for sharing memories about them throughout the ceremony as well as laughter and tears. It really is an opportunity for everyone who knew them best to come together in celebration of their life. Let me help make your loved one’s final farewell as special as they were when they were alive! Contact me today for more information about what I offer.

Out And About In Torrox

Torrox is the name of a collection of locations situated east of Torre Del Mar. This is a popular spot to live and holiday for both Spanish and other European nations with one big factor being it has the best climate in Europe. Each of these places have much to offer in their own right and collectively, they form a lovely area to live, work and relax. Torrox Costa is located just 15km from Torre Del Mar. Torrox Costa has a totally different character and personality to its near neighbour. Like much of this coast, there’s an impressive promenade that sweeps the length of the beaches here. At its eastern end, just past the lighthouse, the beach is dog friendly and is a great spot to let your furry friend run along the shoreline.

Torrox pueblo is situated at the foothills of the Alpujarra mountains, a couple of miles inland from Torrox Costa. This is traditional white-washed village set in a green valley. There’s a traditional Spanish feel to this small village, despite it being the home to many people from other parts of the world. Located between Torrox Costa and Pueblo, Torrox park is a large collection of urbanisations that are popular relocation spots with those who decide to make this area of Axarquía their home. There’s property to suit every budget and style: spacious villas, townhouses and apartments along with a large and well equipped mobile home park that allows all year living. Whilst, in itself, Torrox Park, doesn’t offer much for day trippers, many visitors stay here as homes are frequently listed for holiday rental. It does provide all the services required for a smooth stay or relocation: bars, restaurants, supermarkets as well as doctors, chemists, hairdressers etc.

The combination of Torrox Costa, Pueblo and Park is a winning one. Each has their own distinct character but each are connected to form an excellent place to stay, explore and maybe even to live. Shop Local - Support Your Local Community

There Is A God!!

Dear God There was a man who worked for the Post Office whose job it was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses. One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address or postcode. He thought he should open it to see what it was about. The letter read: Dear God, I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension. Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had 100€ in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment. Next Sunday is my birthday, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope.. Please help me? Sincerely, Edna The postal worker was touched. He showed the letter to all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few euros. By the time he made the rounds,

he had collected 96€, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman. The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends. A few days later, another letter came addressed to God and in the same handwriting. All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened. It read:

Dear God, How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift. By the way, there was 4€ missing. I think it might have been those thieving bastards at the post office. Sincerely, Edna

Taxation in Spain for residents and non resident property owners

Whether you are tax resident in Spain or own a holiday home here and live in another country, the different tax system in Spain can seem very daunting. Every country has particular rules and obligations, and by ensuring your affairs are dealt with by professional advisers you can ensure that tax bills you receive are correctly dealt with. In some cases, the tax authority sends demands which are based on incorrect or missing information and you need someone to challenge or appeal decisions.

Residents are subject to tax on their worldwide income; this is regardless of where that income is generated. If you are a tax resident and also have income from outside of Spain your adviser can ensure that you can benefit from available reductions and not be subject to any double taxation. Tax residence is acquired if you are resident in Spain for more than 183 days. However, it is very important to note that the tax authorities can consider you to be tax resident in Spain if your family and underage dependant children live permanently in Spain, even if you are working outside of Spain for a good part of the year. non residents Individuals who own property in Spain but are not resident have to make an annual declaration. This is a form of income tax based on the rateable (catastral) value of your property. If you rent out the property this return should be completed on a quarterly basis. Since Brexit, some tax reductions are no longer available to British clients renting out property.

43

We are very aware that each case is different. It is your particular circumstances that will be considered and you will receive tailored advice and reminders for resident and nonresident taxes once you are registered as a client.

Our Tax department also offers comprehensive advice to Companies from many different countries and we can assist with registering, obtaining Fiscal numbers and entering returns. The 3rd Children’s Bee Drawing Contest

After the impossibility of celebrating World Bee Day last year due to the health pandemic, this year the Malagueña Association of Beekeepers together with the Colmenar Honey Museum are organising the celebration of “World Day of the Bees” and for this, all the measures for the prevention of Covid-19 that exist at that date will be followed

https://www.mieldemalaga.com/dias/2021/bas es_dibujo.html

Among the planned activities we are organising the 3rd Children's Bee Drawing Contest in order to involve and educate children about the value of the bee as a pollinating agent and in preserving the environment. Children up to 12 years old can participate who send us their drawing together with authorisation signed by their parents or legal guardians, the deadline to submit the drawing will be May 14, the winners of each category will be informed on the 23rd of May at the Museo de la Miel and the winners will be presented with their award. Halting erosion using Vetiver from Vetiver Spain

Our Nursery is open by appointment only depending on the current travel restrictions. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa. Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now.

We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture. To see more images of Vetiver go to this link. https://www.vetiverspain.org/photo-gallery.html

Reasons To Advertise

Don’t be the one to miss out on some potential business during these tougher times.

1. Customers Forget. We the customers forget without constant reminders. Each day a customer doesn’t hear about your company is one more day they start hearing about your competitor. 2. name recognition. When a customer thinks of a product who do you want them to think of? It’s pretty hard for them to immediately think of you if they don’t see your name anywhere.

3. people often take their time when buying. I often use a laptop when I could travel around and the time is coming for a new one. So I’ll be shopping for that. Am I going to buy it tomorrow? Probably not. I’ll start looking out for the ads, studying the available brands and assembling the features I need. I might not make the purchase for several months but when I do I will probably have a dealer in mind and they will get a shot at my business.

4. Customers move. Studies show that 25% of your customers will move each year, this means there is a 25% of potential new customers arriving too.

5. A portion of the market is always shopping. Did you notice the tyre ads in the paper today? If you need tyres you probably did. If not you probably didn’t give them a second glance. Not everyone is your customer every day. But each and every day there is a portion of the population that is looking for your product. And you need to be there when they are ready to start looking for that product. CoviD Advertising Companies willing to raise their voices and continue advertising their wares in a depressed economy “will not only consolidate their existing position but will likely achieve a

57

degree of dominance when the marketplace makes its inevitable recovery.” While consumers may stop buying during this uncertain time, it doesn’t mean they stop listening and reading. But if you keep your cool and maintain your advertising presence, when your competitors withdraw their voices from the market place your voice will be heard all the louder. We will get through this together, those advertisers that continued with us throughout the recession in 2007/2008, 80% are still advertising with us today!  To advertise in The Sentinella Axarquia call 664 210 468 or email sales@thesentinella.com The deadline for the June edition is Wednesday 19th May.

Burriana Beach

Burriana beach is one of the most popular destinations in the ever increasing popularity of Nerja. With a prime location, framed by cliffs, it is the perfect place to enjoy a great family holiday. Let’s hope visitors can enoy it this summertime

Blue Flag Beach This blue flag beach is a comfortable stroll from Nerja town centre. The walk takes about 20 minutes and the views along it are fantastic, though many prefer to jump in a taxi and save their energy for the many facilities on offer here. There’s even a car park right by the beach entrance. It is definitely worth taking a taxi or using a car. There’s no public transport to here and whilst the steep hill is fine to descend at the end of a day’s beach exertion, it’s a difficult climb. Known locally as ‘Cardiac Hill’ or by its real name, Calle Filipinas, the winding road links the Parador de Nerja at the top with the beach. If you are fortunate enough to be staying at the Parador, it has its own private lift directly down to the beach. This accommodation has spectacular views of Burriana and the coastline beyond. Another choice is the 117 steep steps from the Mirador Del Bendito and a walk along the sands. Burriana Beach is a great location to be entertained as well as to relax, which is why it’s a popular spot in summer for locals and visitors alike. From the sedate movement of a paddle boat to much more exertion on a jet

ski and even the banana boat, Burriana has a whole range of rental activities. Paddle boarding and kayaking are available too. Diving is even available. If you prefer to stay firmly on the sand, then there are three volleyball courts to try out. In addition, umbrellas and sunbeds are available along with toilets and showers. This is a great beach for the whole family, though it does usually get very busy in the summer months. A further advantage of this lively area is that entertainment is not just confined to the beach. The promenade has lots of souvenir shops along the promenade where you can treat yourself to holiday souvenirs or one of those essential items easily forgotten: sun cream, beach towel, sun hat etc.

The promenade is a great place to stroll and take in the natural scenery and beauty of Burriana.

The wide expanse of a walkway traverses the beach. Here, you’ll find the statue of Antonio Mercero, the director of the popular 1980s Verano Azul TV series which was filmed here. Also, on the promenade, there are beach bars and restaurants with terraces where you can sit and people watch whilst enjoying some excellent grilled or fried fish and a cold beer or tinto de verano. The highly popular Restaurant Ayo offers all you can eat paella which makes it an attractive choice for families and groups throughout the summer.

& t i Fru Facts Veg Okra

The Okra or Okro, known in many English-speaking countries as ladies' fingers or ochro.

One test-tube study in breast cancer cells found that the lectin in okra may prevent cancer cell growth by up to 63%.

Though technically a fruit, okra often gets used like a vegetable in cooking.

By including okra in your diet along with a healthy exercise routine, you may be able to work out for longer and recover more quickly from your exercise.

Okra is a flowering plant with edible seed pods. It grows best in warm climates and is often cultivated in Africa and South Asia.

It is a good source of minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and fibre.

It contains a sticky juice that people use to thicken sauces. Though it’s not one of the most common foods, okra is packed with nutrition.

There is evidence that the seed extracts of okra have an antioxidant, anti-stress effect in the bloodstream of mice.

Okra is a good source of folate, with 1 cup (100 grams) providing 15% of a woman’s daily needs for this nutrient.

One cup of raw okra, weighing 100 grams contains 60 micrograms (mcg) of folate, 7.5g of carbohydrates, 3.2g of fibre, 23mg of vitamin C and 82mg of calcium. Scientists think that these compounds may help lower the risk of cancer.

Why Run When You Can Walk?

We could ask Antony (GPS Insurance) this question. Last month we printed a three page feature on how a group of friends climbed La Mount Maroma for charity. It was very successful, however Antony decided to run up and down the mountain and got lost! See image below to see where he ended up. What a Wally!!!! Only 28km’s out of his way :) But, I can guarantee he will ‘run around’ getting the best insurance quote for you! See advert on page 77

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing. If you are going to try cross-country walking start with a small country. I joined a health club last year, spent about 400€. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.

The importance of walking, my kind of thinking!

Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at 7,000€ per month.

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise', I wash my mouth out with chocolate. The advantage of walking every day is so when you die, they'll say, 'Well, she looks good doesn't she.'

My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he's 97 years old and we don't know where he is.

Axarquia Solicitors

Banks will have to pay costs for mortgage valuations signed before the new Law passed in 2019.

The Supreme Court deems that the financial institutions should be liable to pay the valuation cost, which is now attributed to the consumer since the new law was passed. These retroactive measures of this new law will affect customers that signed a mortgage agreement before 2019. Banks will have to pay 100% of the valuation (tasacion) costs on mortgages signed prior to the entry into force of the Real Estate Credit Act 2019. This was established by the Supreme Court in a notified judgment at the end of January 2021, which is a new setback for financial institutions in the ongoing legal battle they have held over the past few years at the expense of home loans. However, this reimbursement is not automatic, each individual case must be presented in Court. A Judge will decide that the specific clause of the contract is abusive. The consumer concerned is, therefore, required to go to the courts to claim a refund for this charge.

The High Court points out the following in a note. 'The Supreme Court rules that the valuation costs, where Law 5/2019 of 15 March, governing real estate credit contracts, is a matter for the bank and not for the consumer,' Thus, it also recalls that "this doctrine implies that consumers are entitled to the refund of all expenses paid for the registration of a property, the management and appraisal, as well as half of the notary expenses". They add that only the Stamp duty tax (AJD) must be paid by the client on mortgages signed prior to this law.

This ruling only affects loans signed before the Real Estate Credit Act was passed just under two years ago where it was established that the valuation must be paid by the

borrower, i.e., the consumer.

In this way, the High Court lays down a new doctrine which states that clients are entitled to the restitution of all expenses paid for the registration of property, management, and valuation, as well as half of the notary expenses. This means that, with this newly acknowledged judgment, mortgage holders will be able to claim in their entity the refund of all these expenses, to which the valuation has now also been added. This decision was reached after a recent judgement form the Supreme Court resolved an appeal regarding a judgment of an appeal in the Provincial Court of Cáceres in a case starring Liberbank.

"This is important news for mortgages signed before June 2019. The bank must face 100% of the valuation expense on all loans prior to the current Real Estate Credit Act (in force since June 1, 2019)," says attorney Jose Lopez. A ruling that is preceded by several judgements, in lower instances, that had already been pronounced in this regard. 'With this ruling by the courts, 100% of the costs of appraisal, registration, and management expenses, as well as 50% of the notary expenditure, may be claimed for this abusive clause,' he adds. Getting Old

Do you realise that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids? If you're less than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions. 'How old are you?' 'I'm four and a half!' You're never thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five! That's the key.

You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. 'How old are you?' 'I'm gonna be 16!' You could be 13, but hey, you're gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life! You become 18. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 18. YESSSS AN ADULT!! But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're just a sour-dumpling. What's wrong? What's changed?

77

You BECOME 18, you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would! So you BECOME 18, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60. You've built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday!

You get into your 80's and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn't end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; 'I was JUST 92.' Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. 'I'm 100 and a half!' May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

Property Issues - Electricity

Domestic electricity and up-grading to 3-phase

The age of the property you are intending on buying will be an indicator of the state of the electrical installation in the property, as many older properties will not be compliant with current domestic property regulations. When purchasing an older property, the potential buyer will often want to modernise the interior of the property and update such things as the kitchen which will include modern appliances, such as a fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, as well as having air conditioning units installed in the bedrooms and living rooms, these items will put an enormous strain on an electrical system that was not intended for such a high level of consumption. Increasing the load on the existing electrical circuits if they are old may result in the circuit breakers tripping as the wiring overheats or in extreme cases fires. I have often seen cases where there is no earth connection on the properties at all. Having an earth connection for the property is important as it keeps people safe by preventing electric shocks. It prevents damage to electrical appliances and devices by preventing excessive current from running through the circuit. 3-phase electrical supply Many properties will not have 3-phase electricity as they were built when single phase was the main supply in Spain especially in the countryside. 3-phase wiring

has a greater load bearing capacity as well as being more efficient, it also includes an earth wire for greater safety. If your property is in an urban area, transferring to a 3-phase supply should be relatively easy but if your property is in a rural location, transferring and upgrading to 3-phase can be more complicated and expensive. The owner of the national grid Endesa will not bear the costs for extending the infrastructure to individual properties and so the cost of additional pylons and cables have to be borne by the property owner. If the nearest 3-phase substation is over several kilometres away the cost can be very high. Urban properties should be sited relatively close to a substation and so upgrading is relatively easy and cheaper. When upgrading to 3-phase electricity the main fuse box and fuses on the outside of the property will require changing as well as the principal fuse box and fuses on the inside of the property. We at LT Construction employ in-house electricians and we can make the process as stress free and cost effective as possible. We will visit your property and provide a free estimate of the costs involved in a general upgrade of your electrical system or transferring to 3-phase. See main advert opposite

Into a Belfast pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut and bruised and he's walking with a limp. "What happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender. "Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy. "That little s***, O'Conner," says Sean, "He couldn't do that to you, he must have had something in his hand." "That he did," says Paddy, "a shovel is what he had, and a lickin' he gave me with it." "Well," says Sean, "you should have defended yourself, didn't you have something in your hand?" "That I did," said Paddy. "Mrs. O'Conner's breast, and a thing of beauty it was, but useless in a fight."

Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry Written by: Eric Pearson, Max Borenstein, Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, Zach Shields Directed by: Adam Wingard rating: PG-13 runtime: 113 min.

It might not convert anyone who doesn’t already take pleasure in the storied genre, but those with an open mind will find plenty to appreciate here! This film sees a sputtering start turn into a fun ride stocked with some spectacular monster action, silly-but-enjoyable narratives, and wonderful design. The movie unfolds across two separate storylines – one being a follow-up to the adventure in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the other feeling like the continuation of

a Kong: Skull Island sequel that never got made. What kicks off both storylines, however, is the same event, which sees Godzilla make a surprise appearance in Pensacola, Florida, and decimate the American headquarters of the company Apex Cybernetics. Fearing that Godzilla’s behaviour is only going to become more erratic and more destructive, the head of Apex, Walter Simmons (DemiánBichir), reaches out to discredited scientist Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgard) and provides him with the resources to continue his research. Lind believes that there is a Titan homeworld that exists at the core of the Earth, and Simmons believes that there exists a power there that could finally give humanity a fighting chance against the King of the Monsters. The only way that they can find what they are looking for, though, is with the help of another Titan, which leads Lind to reach out to former colleague Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), who has Kong in containment and has been studying his behaviour. Those on Team Kong worry about the giant ape’s safety when another alpha Titan is loose in the world and constantly looking to prove its dominance – but there is another party that believes that the threat isn’t what people think it is. BBQ Rules

I know we have had this one before, but it’s so good and makes me laugh everytime I read it!

We are about to enter the BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion: routine... 1) The woman buys the food.

10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all: 11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed 'her night off', and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women.

2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.

3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill beer in hand. 4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three metre exclusion zone where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can take place without the interference of the woman. Here comes the important part: 5) The man places the meat on the grill. More routine...

6) The woman goes inside to organise the plates and cutlery.

7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he flips the meat important again: 8) The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to the woman.

More routine... 9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.

I was scared to see you … I was a coward and I’m so sorry.” She ends on a poignant note, addressing Nikki's anorexia battle. She writes: "For the people who laughed, labelled, disregarded her coz “they” knew what she needed like “eat a sandwich.” ... are probably the same ones being “praised with their wonderful public posts” Feel better guys?

Amanda rejected It might have been 30 years ago but it is a moment Barnaby Hands’ friends will never let him forget – the time he turned down Amanda Holden on prime-time TV. Amanda was then a 19-year-old unknown drama student who signed up for Cilla Black’s Blind Date ‘for a laugh’. Now, as she is tipped to host her own dating show for the BBC, The Mail on Sunday tracked down the man who rejected her in front of 14 million ITV viewers. ‘I still get teased about it to this day,’ Barnaby said. ‘When she became famous everyone kept telling me, “You idiot!” ‘I’m not surprised in the slightest that she’s a star — the way she expressed herself in front of the camera and her big personality. I feel a little sorry that her appearance on this show has followed her around to this day. Even now people text me and say they’ve seen the clip on YouTube.’ Barnaby, 50, now an executive at film giant Paramount, later found love with Becca, whom he married 17 years ago.

Buying A Renovation Project

As the Covid vaccination scheme begins to accelerate finally here in Spain, we are seeing a very positive improvement in the housing market and an ever increasing number of serious buyers. But what is clear is that everyone is still looking for a bargain!

There are many fascinating old houses out there that are on at very competitive prices, in need of restoration, that I thought I should once again talk about the potentially exciting and rewarding process of buying a lovely old place and doing it up! It is rewarding because this is the only time one is able to really create something bespoke and to one’s personal taste and is an excellent way of achieving what you want on a lower budget. The most important thing is to get everything right, from the start. That means, proper planning permission in most cases (which then potentially permits you to obtain a Licence of Occupation which fully legalises

93

the house), choosing the right builders and, if you are not able to be there yourself, someone to oversee the work. If everything is well organised, there is no reason why the project should not be fun and rewarding. With the Canillas based company we highly recommend (Negrete Perez y Marín), who have proven to be consistently reliable, honest, efficient and excellent value, we have helped clients take on many fascinating projects, and hope to continue to work with them long into the future. If you are looking for a project, or know someone who might be interested, we have several that could be fun, and rewarding, to suit various budgets, so do get in touch. Two of those projects are shown in our advertisement below. By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advertisement below)

Costa Animal Society ( CAS)

95

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to make you aware of our new initiative of sponsoring a specific animal in our care. Given the restrictions regarding the Coronavirus, fundraising has become extremely difficult.

Now, however, you can sponsor one of our dogs or cats directly for €25 for six months or €45 for a year. You will receive Ecards on their birthdays and at Christmas, and there will be options via our website and Facebook page for sponsors to contact us to check in on their chosen animal. If your sponsored dog or cat is adopted before the time limit, you can can choose another animal to be informed about. Sponsorships can also be purchased as gifts. Previously, we relied heavily on in-person events, for example our annual dog show Scruffs. To be honest, most of us, including me are a bit long in the tooth.

Some of us have heard of “crowd-funding,” but it leaves us baffled and going to the fridge for a glass of white wine. It sounds like a confounding boondoggle, but who are we to say. At 78, I still can’t type an SMS (I don’t even know what that stands for) without sticking my tongue out the entire time, looking like a cretin with a sloped forehead, a severe underbite and dentures on the verge of popping out.

The point being, if you are an up-and-coming whippersnapper, an animal lover and understands funding through social media, we’d love to hear from you. It would only take a few hours a week to launch a campaign, or so I’ve heard. However, it might take you forever to explain to us how you did it. Ho, ho.

For more information you can contact CAS on 653 557 237, visit the shop,or see us online at www.casnerja.webs.comor on our Facebook page \casnerja. We are also now on Instagram at: cats_dogs29780, and you can find us on Twitter by searching for Costa Animal Society Nerja.

Austrian Wines : Delivering Diversity

SCHLUMBERGER (established 1842) Chardonnay Reserve (12% vol) I found to be an elegant and fresh sparkling wine. This production greets with a light and citrus bouquet, which leads, enticingly, to the mouth’s pleasures www.schlumberger.at Gut MOSER Chardonnay (12.5% vol) is another splendid ‘sparkler’. This ‘klassik’ delight is very popular, too. www.weingut-moser.at

STEININGER Sauvignon Blanc reserve (13.5% vol) also has the crisp, refreshing, sparkling effect, coming through, beautifully. www.weingut-steininger.at

For Austrian still white wines Schloss GOBELSBURG (founded 1171) Heiligenstein (13% vol) suited my palate, for Riesling, perfectly. Fruity, smooth and elegant, with a long finish. One of the oldest wineries, in the Danube area, the winery has Riesling terraces, some of which boast the oldest vineyards on the estate. www.gobelsburg.at NITTNAUS Chardonnay Selection (13% vol) allures, with its eye-catching, golden-yellow colour. The bouquet evokes thoughts of ripe, summer fruits. Full-bodied, with excellent mouthfeel and the palate is delighted by the splendid finish. www.nittnaus.net

HIRSCH (established 1878) Grüner Veltliner (13% vol) has many ‘devotees’. With a captivating bouquet, this full-bodied wine is wonderful, in every sense. Ripe, juicy fruits, in abundance, continue the structured pleasure, to the end. www.weingut-hirsch.at Further great choices, of Austrian white

97

wines, are available including productions by JOSEF FRITZ. www.weingut-fritz.at and EDLMOSER. www.edlmoser.com

Austrian still red wines are also very popular. TRIEBAUMER Weite Welt (14.5% vol) I found exceptional. Full-bodied and dense, from the nasal pleasures to the finish, this wine has late-harvested fruit contributing to the very impressive end product. With high ageing potential, this powerful production wins my vote – and many other people’s, no doubt! www.triebaumer.at

SALZL Sacris (14% vol) is a further, often-selected wine. Dark fruits, are complemented by what is to follow. Pleasures are immense, for this Zweigelt wine, which is well-balanced, through to the extended finish. www.salzl.at Other very impressive Austrian red wines include productions from JOHANNESHOF REINISCH. www.j-r.at and PRIELER. www.prieler.at For more details, including winery tours and accommodations, please visit the respective websites. Orders are processed, then dispatched quickly and efficiently. Also, the Austrian Wine Marketing Board has a wealth of information. www.austrianwine.com

Two men were sitting at the top floor of the Empire State Building. One man says to the other. "You know, if you jump out the window here, the force of the wind will blow you back in through the window on the 90th floor." The other man says "Leave off, you're joking aren't u?" The 1st man says "No, here I'll prove it". So he stands on the window ledge and jumps out and comes back in thru the 90th floor window. The 2nd man says, "That was just a one off" So he does it again and comes thru on the 90th floor, runs back up and says "See, I’m telling the truth" The 2nd man says "Wow, I’m going do it then" He stands on the window ledge, jumps out and falls to his death. The barman says to the first man, "You know, you're not nice when you're drunk Superman" ------------------------------------------------------------An Irishman, Englishman and Scotsman go into a pub and each order a pint of Guinness. Noah looks to the skies. 'OK God my old mucker, let me get this right, You want a New Ark?' 'Check'. 'With 20 decks, one on top of the other?'. 'Check'. 'And you want it full of Carp?'. 'Check' 'Why?' asks the perplexed Noah, who was slowly but surely getting to the end of his tether........... 'Dunno', says God, 'I just fancied a Multi-Storey Carp Ark'' ------------------------------------------------------------Fred got home from his Sunday round of golf later than normal and very tired. "Bad day at the course?" his wife asked. "Everything was going fine," he said. "Then Harry had a heart attack and died on the 10th tee." "Oh, that's awful!" "You're not kidding. For the whole back nine it was hit the ball, drag Harry, hit the ball, drag Harry." ------------------------------------------------------------An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road. A cop pulls him over. "So," says the cop to the driver, "Where have ya been?" "Why, I've been to the pub of course," slurs the drunk. "Well," says the cop, "It looks like you've had quite a few to drink this evening." "I did all right," the drunk says with a smile. "Did you know," says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms across his chest, "That a few junctions back, your wife fell out of your car?" "Oh, thank heavens," sighs the drunk. "For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf."

A lady goes to her priest one day and tells him, 'Father, I have a problem. I have two female parrots, but they only know how to say one thing.' 'What do they say?' the priest inquired. They say, 'Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?' ‘That's obscene!' the priest exclaimed, then he thought for a moment. 'You know,' he said, 'I may have a solution to your problem. I have two male talking parrots, which I have taught to pray and read the Bible. Bring your two parrots over to my house, and we'll put them in the cage with Francis and Peter. My parrots can teach your parrots to praise and worship, and your parrots are sure to stop saying . . That phrase . . In no time.' Thank you,' the woman responded, 'this may very well be the solution.' The next day, she brought her female parrots to the priest's house. As he ushered her in, she saw that his two male parrots were inside their cage holding rosary beads and praying. Impressed, she walked over and placed her parrots in with them. After a few minutes, the female parrots cried out in unison: ‘Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?' There was stunned silence. Shocked, one male parrot looked over at the other male parrot and exclaimed, 'Put the beads away, Frank our prayers have been answered!' ------------------------------------------------------------Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-year old girl to hold a torch over mummy so he could see while he helped to deliver the baby. Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed and after a little while Connor was born.

103

The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry. The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-year old what she thought about what she had witnessed. Kathleen quickly responded, "He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place...Smack him again!" ------------------------------------------------------------Brenda O'Malley is home making dinner, as usual, when Tim Finnegan arrives at her door. "Brenda, may I come in?" he asks. "I've somethin'to tell ya." "Of course you can come in, you're always welcome, Tim. But where's my husband?" "That's what I'm here to be tellin' ya, Brenda. There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery..." "Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me.." "I must, Brenda. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry." Finally, she looked up at Tim. "How did it happen, Tim?" "It was terrible, Brenda. He fell into a vat of Guinness and drowned." "Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me true, Tim. Did he at least go quickly?" "Well, no Brenda . . . no. Fact is, he got out three times to pee." ------------------------------------------------------------Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady after his Sunday morning service, and she's in tears. He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?" She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night." The priest says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?" She says, "That he did, Father" . "The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary?"
