It’s now November - well late October as I write this - and I still haven’t had to dig out my winter clothes, or even my autumn clothes come to that. How wonderfully blessed we are to live here in Spain where the sun loves to shine! I’ve been enjoying some wonderful morning time beach walks, splashing my feet along the ever-changing shoreline. Yesterday, as I strolled, I discovered a lone prawn dying helplessly on the shore. I looked into its little black dots of eyes, and watched it writhe around with its cracked shell and suddenly I felt a surge of emotion inside for this prawn. Not because I felt sorry that it was dying, but because I felt overjoyed that it was on its way to a better place. Then I wondered whether there's a special Prawn Heaven, or maybe a more general Sea Heaven for all the sea creatures? But whatever type of heaven it is, I'm sure the prawn I met this morning is already there, swimming in divine waters and feeling amazing. I’m feeling very happy today as I’ve just received a beautifully drawn handmade card by the girl I sponsor in Tibet. Her name is Karma and her latest school reports show that she’s doing very well across the board, achieving mostly A and B grades. It warms my heart to know that the small amount of money I donate each month allows Karma to continue attending school and furthering her education. In the card she calls me her ‘daughter’ which is very endearing.

De Cotta British workers overseas – Employment Law News from De Cotta Law Where employees work abroad even for many months at a time they may still be entitled to claim the range of rights including unfair dismissal under the British legislation, the Employment Rights Act 1996 (ERA `96). This could be beneficial as these rights can be wider than those provided under Spanish law. It used to be the case that the ERA `96 did not apply to any employment where the employee ordinarily works abroad´ but this clause was removed in 1999 and there is now no statutory provision dealing with this issue, rather it is a matter of case law. To fall within this legislation, the employee has to prove that there is a sufficiently close connection with Great Britain. The employees in the cases of Serco v. Lawson (2006) and MOD v Wallis (2010) were successful in substantiating this. In the case of Serco v. Lawson, a UK company employee was working in the Ascension Islands and all services were carried out there. The Judge gave two circumstances where an employment relationship

might be sufficiently closely connected with GB so as to enable an unfair dismissal claim to be made under the British legislation and these are: (i) where an employee is posted abroad to work for a business conducted in Britain and/or (ii) where he is working in a political or social British enclave abroad. In MOD v. Wallis the employees were employed by NATO in Europe. These employees were the wives of armed forces personnel and were employed as such by reason of their husbands´ employment. This was sufficient to establish the connection as they were said to be working in a similar situation to (ii) in Serco and were entitled to claim unfair dismissal notwithstanding that they were not employed within GB. The employees also succeeded in claiming sex discrimination on the basis that it is a matter of EU law and therefore irrelevant which national law is applicable, provided that it is the law of a member state within the EU. However in relation to unfair dismissal, the recent case of Duncombe & others v. Secretary of State for Children, Schools and families (2011) narrowed the criteria somewhat and held that employees working or based abroad can claim this right in GB only in exceptional circumstances where the employment has much stronger connections with the country and with British employment law than with any other system of law. It cannot therefore be assumed that responsibility for an employee passes entirely to the overseas organisation in these circumstances. It will depend on the facts of each case. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t suppose we will hear many firework bangs here in Spain on November 5th, but think of the folks back home on the day and enjoy these historic factsâ&#x20AC;Ś The ancient Chinese used fireworks at festivities and to frighten enemies in battle. Legend has it that the Chinese made the first fireworks in the 800s, filling bamboo shoots with gunpowder and exploding them in the New Year with the hope that the sound would scare away evil spirits. According to tradition, Marco Polo brought this technology back to Europe. Fireworks became known in Europe during the 1300s, probably after returning Crusaders brought them from the East. By the 1400s Florence, Italy, was the centre of fireworks manufacturing.

At religious festivals Italians made plaster figures that spewed fireworks from their eyes and mouths. During the 1700s displays became more elaborate and were popular with European royalty. French King Louis XV ordered extravagant displays of fireworks at Versailles, and Russian Tsar Peter the Great put on a five-hour show after the birth of his son. Meanwhile, in the American colonies settlers used fireworks to mark happy occasions. Today fireworks are a key part of celebrating Independence Day in the United States, Guy Fawkes' Day in the United Kingdom, Bastille Day in France, and New Year festivities around the world. The multi-hued displays we know now began in the 1830s, when Italians added trace amounts of metals that burn at high temperatures, creating beautiful colours.

Good News For Dogs - And People We are finally getting a vaccine against the very much feared leishmaniosis!! Leishmaniosis is a widely distributed disease, endemic in the Mediterranean area, Asia and America. It is a zoonosis, which means it transmits from dogs to humans via a little sand fly. About 3,000 people with leishmaniosis have been hospitalised in Spain in the last few years. It is estimated that at least 2.5 million dogs are infected in South-West Europe, and the prevalence in Spanish dogs is up to 30 per cent! The disease evolves when the dog’s immune system doesn’t manage to stop the parasite. It then multiplies in the dogs own cells, distributing itself from the skin to the bone marrow, spleen and liver, resulting in spreading immune complexes. These are are formed by cells invaded by the parasite, plus the cells that are trying to fight it. We then see the inflammatory reactions in different organs; hence why we encounter so many different symptoms. Most of the methods available for control and treatment of leishmaniosis have a limited effect. New studies have shown that if we manage to control the infection in dogs, the risk of passing the infection on to other animals and humans is much less. Therefore, a vaccine against leishmaniosis in dogs could be very important, because we can stimulate the dog’s immune system so it can fight the parasite before it multiplies in its body and causes disease and further infections.

Why then has it taken so long to produce an effective vaccine? First of all, parasites have a tendency to stimulate an exaggerated, but not effective, immune response in the animal it has infected. This will then also occur with the vaccine, as it is just a “copy” of an attack from the parasite. For leishmania, the problem is also that it is an expert in avoiding the immune system by attacking cells that can’t defend themselves, and it inhibits the defence mechanisms in the cells that are specialised in defence, such as the macrophages. On top of that, all parasites present a unique lifecycle, whereby they undergo different stages (egg, worm, nymph, etc.) which further complicates the development of a vaccine, because against which stage do you want the immune system to react? The new vaccine is not 100 per cent effective, but it does stop most vaccinated dogs from being infected, and those that get infected despite the vaccine, are much less likely to develop the disease. Therefore, it is still a good idea to use collars or pipettes to prevent your dog from being attacked by the sand fly. All dogs over six months, free of leishmania, can get vaccinated. The protocol is to vaccinate the dog three times with a time span of three weeks between each vaccine, and thereafter once a year. The vaccine was launched in Portugal this year, and should arrive in Spain in the beginning of 2012.

I have around three thousand followers on Twitter and every time I write a new post or come across an interesting article, I send it to three thousand people, so never underestimate the power of using Twitter to sell books. For example, you should mention that you’re an author, whether fiction or non-fiction, the title of your book and what niche / topic / genre it focuses on. Next, start following people, but find the right

people to follow… not just any people. Targeted people. So how do you do that? Well I’ve found a few ways: 1. In the circle we share our goals and happiness by empowering ourselves, all at the same time. I also offer healing, not just for the people there, but their friends and loved ones too -anyone who needs it, in fact – including animals. My intention is to make these evenings enlightening and deeply spiritual, bringing in some amazing people to share their gifts and experiences, helping us all gain a deeper understanding about ourselves. The first circle was amazing, and the 46 people there all felt the power of spirit in our room. Good news emails flooded in afterwards from people saying how much more positive they were feeling. The second evening circle was hosted by a dear friend of mine, Julie Chimes, a best-selling author and a truly inspirational lady. The word had spread and 56 people turned up. The night was perfect: magical and amazing. We don't judge, but just sit in peace, which allows healing to take place. The ‘how’ and the ‘why’aren’t important – it’s the after-effect that counts. Benamocarra rants where you can sit and chat to the locals or just enjoy good food and drink. This month we take a look at 2 villages, Cajiz & Caleta. Staying in alphabetical order we first visit Cajiz, a small village situated just 27 kilometres from Malaga and 5 kilometres from the coast. This village is the first one you go past on the way up the hill to the larger village of Iznate and is often bypassed without a second glance. On taking time out to discover the place I wondered at the eclectic style of housing which ranges from poor ruins in desperate need of reforming to grand modern structures towering over the modest square. Even the 18th century parish church of San José is tucked away amongst trees and ruins and looks as if no-one has painted or cared for it in many a year! This village, like many in the area, is steep with little dead end streets culminating in a mass of colour with flowering pots outside closed front doors with little dogs lying stretched out in the shade. One street has its name rather quaintly hand painted on a wall. There are a couple of good bars and restau-

The Cabbage Patch Our new veggie patch in Mezquitilla is positively thriving ever since we replanted at the beginning of September! Everything seems to be growing more and more succulent by the day, apart from the cucumbers which have gone a bit crazy and are infested with some mysterious breed of insect. The leaves have all turned a manky yellow colour which is off putting to say the least.

Kami and Tony found a couple of chairs by a skip in the street so at least we now have somewhere to sit when we’re watering. I quite enjoy basking in the sun with a book…when there’s no weeding to do of course! Other news is that Tony has been particularly enjoying the chilli peppers, quote: "They're hot enough to blow your head off! Time for loo roll in the freezer!!!”

I’ve spotted many more creepy crawlies since moving plot from Velez to the current location. Recently, as we were busy planting, weeding and picking we found a cluster of hideous black beetles housed under a lettuce. I’ve also seen crickets, spiders, ants (of course) and one day, to my utter horror, a cockroach!

Recipe Of The Month Garlic Prawn Pasta ingredients 200g spaghetti 45g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp dried red chilli flakes 1 tbsp lemon zest, shredded 12 large raw prawns, peeled, cleaned and halved 1 tbsp lemon juice Small handful flat-leaf parsley leaves, roughly torn Method 1. Cook the pasta in a large saucepan of boiling salted water for 8â&#x20AC;&#x201C;10 minutes or until al dente. Drain and keep warm. 2. While the pasta is cooking, heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the butter and oil and cook until the butter has melted. Add the garlic, chilli and zest and cook for 2 minutes. 3. Add the prawns and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until the prawns are tender. Add the pasta, juice, parsley, plus sea salt and black pepper to the pan and toss to combine. Serve with a simple green salad.

BEM idiomas Time is flying by, but why is this? Maybe because I am getting older, or maybe because my five year anniversary is approaching in February next year – five years of living in Spain. Wow five years! I still think I should be able to speak Spanish much better than I do now, but then I look around me at the many British people who have lived here longer than me, who don’t work full time, don’t have young children, don’t take lessons and so have all the time in the world to spare a couple of hours for sessions each week -- but choose not to. So then I think again, and I tell myself how remarkably well I am doing. I am really going for it at the moment. In the house I try to talk some Spanish every day. Of course I still have my lessons at BEM in Velez Malaga as without them I would know nothing! I now also attend a conversation class for one hour a week with other foreign mothers from my daughter’s school and whenever I can, I have a coffee with my best Spanish friend, who helps me more. Mind, Body & Spirit Why are we fat? Reasons for weight-gain Following last month’s article on weight-loss, it might be helpful to explore some of the reasons why we put on excess weight in the first place, and examine the popular theories. These vary depending on whether we are talking about ourselves: “It’s hormonal imbalance;” “It’s genetic;” “It’s my lifestyle - I’m too busy to eat sensibly” or, referring to someone else: “They eat too much;” “They never take any exercise;” “They eat too much sweet stuff and fatty food.” Setting aside the glaring fundamental attribution error (the psychological mechanism by which we attribute our own problems to outside causes and other people’s problems to internal causes), there is some truth in these explanations. There are genetic “types” which are more predisposed to weight-gain than others, and it is a fact that overweight parents are more likely to rear overweight children. However, as in all apparently genetically-determined conditions, the crucial factor is not the genes per se, but the way the mind-body “reads” the genetic programme. This is influenced by mental and emotional factors in an individual. On the other hand, the tendency to be overweight, or even obese, can be passed on from parents to offspring in other ways. Children of obese parents are likely to be growing up in an environment in which being overweight is the norm, with ready availability of high-calorie foods and a parental role model of regular over-eating. The plain and simple truth is that we put on excess weight because we eat too much; ie we take in more calories than we use for our me-

tabolism. The question is: why? Few, if any of us, really want to be fat. On the contrary, obesity is a source of enormous stress and distress for the individual. Neither is it a deliberate choice and blame, whether directed towards ones-self or others, is as uncalled for as it is unhelpful. In many cases where excessive weight gain begins early in life, it can be in response to an emotionally hostile home environment such as an angry, overly-critical or even violent parent. The child’s need for self- protection is unconsciously played out by becoming literally bigger: the extra fat serving as a defensive layer, insulating the sensitive ‘inside’ being from the onslaught. Similarly, girls going through puberty may unconsciously gain weight in order to stave off the unwanted and sometimes threatening attention their newly-developed body receives from the opposite sex, by making themselves less attractive. In adulthood too, overeating is a common response to emotional distress - a family crisis, the break-up of a relationship, a bereavement or loss of one’s job. Comfort eating, – consuming foods with high sugar or fat content, often to excess – floods the body with endorphins. These “pleasure molecules” temporarily mask the biochemical signals of the distress. Once the behavioural pattern is set, it becomes hard to break. Readers Writes WARNING On 7th October at the coffee bar near to the pet shop in Eroski shopping centre an elderly lady sitting at one of the outer tables had her handbag snatched away by a young child of around 10 years of age and ran off into the car park and disappeared. Please be warned and take care. "While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it. For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head. But when I got to my destination, I called the Police and they were going to check it out. But, this is what the Police advised even before they went out there to check.... "There are several things to be aware of ... gangs and thieves are now plotting different ways to get a person (mostly women) to stop their vehicle and get out of the car. "There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police where gangs are placing a car seat by the

road...with a fake baby in it...waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby. "Note that the location of this car seat is usually beside a wooded or grassy (field) area and the person -- woman -- will be dragged into the woods and attacked. If it's a man, they're usually beaten and robbed. Do not stop for any reason!!! dial the police and report what you saw, but don't even slow down. "if you are driving at night and eggs are thrown at your windscreen, do not stop to check the car, do not operate the wiper and do not spray any water because eggs mixed with water become milky and block your vision up to 92.5%, and you are then forced to stop beside the road and become a victim of these criminals. this is a new technique used by gangs, so please inform your friends and relatives. these are desperate times and these are unsavoury individuals who will take desperate measures to get what they want." I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. I started to think she was testing me because she asked for a tennis bracelet when she doesn't even know how to play tennis. I think I threw her for a loop when I said, "That's fine, honey." She was almost nearing sexual satisfaction from all of the excitement. Smiling with excited anticipation she finally said, "I think this is all dear, let's go to the cashier." I could hardly contain myself when I blurted out, "No honey, I don't feel like it." Her face just went completely blank as her jaw dropped with a baffled "WHAT???!!!" I then said, "Really honey! I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while. You're just not in touch with my financial needs as a man enough for me to satisfy your shopping needs as a woman." And just when she had this look like she was going to kill me, I added, "Why can't you just love me for who I am and not for the things I buy you?"
