Little did we know at the time of booking that in order to get by in this particular corner of the island you had to speak fluent German! In hindsight we should have hazarded as guess as we boarded the ‘Air Berlin’ plane. It didn’t bother me that I was the only English person holidaying in that town, and my boyfriend the only Spaniard, but some of the restaurants displayed their menus in the German lingo only, and I have to admit that was pretty irritating. Our hotel was utterly terrible and if I’d been a hotel inspector I’d have taken away at least two of their stars without thinking twice. On our first afternoon, after a lazy few hours lying on the beach, we went back to the hotel for a shower. But to our dismay there was no hot water. The water was completely freezing to the point where had I stood under it for more than five minutes I’d have likely caught a cold. My boyfriend called reception, who told us that a lot of other guests were having showers at that time so we’d have to either wait half an hour, or use the swimming pool shower. At that moment I wondered if we were really in the 21st century… On a positive note the island itself was magical. We hired a car out for one day and had great fun exploring the villages and towns, including the picturesque mountain village of Valdemossa, which I recommend. Other mustsees are the caves of Drach and the safari park, where the monkeys, zebras and other animals run wild. Ooops my space is out... Tschuss!

Strange News The Love Mattress Clever mattress-makers have invented a specially designed bed to help randy lovers. Mice Balls!!

This is a real memo sent out by a computer company to its employees. It went to all field engineers about a computer peripheral problem. The engineers literally rolled on the floor as they read; especially the last couple of sentences. Re: Replacement of Mouse Balls.

Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop off method. Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge.

If a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement.

Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately.

Mouse balls are now available as FRU (Field Replacement Units). Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel.

It is recommended that each person have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction.

Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the manufacturer of the mouse.

Any customer missing his balls should contact the local personnel in charge of removing and replacing these necessary items. Please keep in mind that a customer without properly working balls is an unhappy customer.

De Cotta Co ownership of Spanish property by Reyes Gomez Llorente - Lawyer with De Cotta McKenna y Santafé Illustrative case studies: A) “A joint owner, Mr. Biscuit, sells his 50% share of a property to Mr. Grabalot for 150,000€ without notifying his wife, who is a joint owner of the property. Two months later Mrs. Biscuit finds out that Mr.Biscuit, who is now living in the Seychelles with Miss Charm, sold half of the property she lives in to Mr. Grabalot and his title is now registered with the property registry. Mrs. Biscuit can challenge the transaction BUT she would have to pay the 150,000€ plus the costs of the transaction at the same time as she challenges the sale. There would then be an argument as to whether she had exercised this right within the time period available in the law, nine days from the time of inscription or from the date of knowledge!” B) “Mr. Biscuit dies leaving his 50% of the jointly owned matrimonial home to Miss Charm and his two children from his first marriage; crumbs!” Background: Many people who have purchased property in Spain over the last 20 years do not fully understand the importance of the concept of co-ownership and the legal rights and obligations that go with it. The way in which property is owned in Spain is relevant when a couple divorce or when a spouse dies and even more important when a partnership or co-habitation breaks down. The law on co-ownership is regulated by Article 392 of the Civil Code. A co or joint owner cannot be obliged to be permanently fixed with their co-ownership. This means that each coowner has the right to request the liquidation or dissolution of their co ownership. There are two legal rights; the right of first refusal and the right of retraction. Many people assume they will have the right of first refusal if the other owner or owners want to sell or transfer their share of a property. However in Spain this right (tanteo) does not apply in most cases of co-ownership, as the property must be registered as a 'finca enfiteútica,' which is a rare form of ownership arising from staged or monetary payments - Articles 1.637 Civil Code. The right of retraction is, however, a legal right

to all co owners and if a joint owner sells their share to a third party the transaction can be challenged. This means that the sale or transfer must be resolved and the co owner must be allowed to acquire the asset paying the same price and under the same terms and conditions. Articles 1.518 and 1.525 state that the costs and legitimate expenses of the sale and costs of use has to be paid at the moment the right of retraction is exercised. In practical terms the issues of occupation and the right of retraction means that very few purchases of part of a property take place without the knowledge and consent of the other coowners. However, this does serve to warn co owners how important it is to know their legal rights, particularly on the breakdown of a relationship. Where there is a mortgage over jointly owned property, it is even more important to get good advice. In most cases a negotiation with the bank and between the parties can resolve the issues and as with many legal problems a good and practical explanation of how the law applies in your particular case will help. Clinica Europa Dental bleaching (also known as tooth whitening) is a common procedure in general dentistry, especially in cosmetic dentistry. As a person ages the adult teeth become darker due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes more porous. Teeth can also become stained by bacterial pigments, foodstuffs and tobacco. Certain antibiotics can also cause teeth stains or reduce the brilliance of the enamel. There are two main types of bleaching; one involves using a high concentration gel and another involves use of a low concentration gel. The low concentration gels can be purchased over the counter. They are for home use and are applied to thin plastic trays which overlay the teeth for short periods. Results are limited. High concentration gels are for professional use only, as they can be dangerous. Power or light accelerated bleaching, coloqually referred to as laser bleaching, uses light energy to accelerate the process. The most common sources

are halogen, LED or plasma. They are used in 15 minute bursts, once a protective light cured barrier is applied to the gums. A typical course of treatment can produce dramatic results, some stains do not respond and a prior professional clean is essential. There are various salons, etc, on the Costa offering these treatments with dubious qualifications. In the UK only professionals are allowed to use these treatments. Casa Maria Three friends take over their local bar - and what a success it has been for Carol, John and Linda. Carol and John, from Casa Maria, have been married for 27 years and have two children, Steph and Wesz. They first had a holiday in Torrox back in 2003 and they enjoyed it so much that they returned in 2004 and found that it was still as great as the first time. They made their decision to move here in 2005. Throughout the last four years Carol worked in various bars and John worked in Casa Maria. When Casa Maria was placed up for sale, John and I, along with our good friend Linda, thought 'why not take the plunge, this is our opportunity'. Since taking over the bar we thoroughly enjoy the banter with the locals and attempting to have conversations with the Spanish farmers. We absolutely love the Jam nights.

Linda came here in 2005 from Nottingham and initially worked in various bars in Torrox Park. She met Carol and John first as customers, then Carol and Linda became work colleagues and good friends. “I've been working here throughout the summer for the past two years," said Linda. "We discussed taking over the bar at the end of last year and we were all very excited. Fortunately it became a reality and in April this year the plan became reality. We're improving our Spanish and having lots of fun and we're very pleased to have had the chance to do this. It is a great bar, very rustic with a ‘real Spanish’ feel to it and we're looking forward to the future. Roast On The Coast This month we headed down to the coast for a roast.....! We chose The Ribhouse in Torrox Costa, with its bright and airy enclosed terrace, which looks and feels a bit like a conservatory. If you want a particular meat from the four options, it's a must to call in advance as the place is very popular. There are three courses on offer, starting with their infamous homemade soup. Kirsty always makes super soups and the cream of leek was no exception. Thomas brought it out in a large tureen and ladle so we could help ourselves. There was enough for three bowls each! I'd ordered lamb and pork for mains and I couldn't wait to try it, as my taste buds had been tittilated by the soup. also a brimming dish of four veggies, which we were informed could be topped up if required, plus a plate of ‘Yorkshires’ and a plate of ‘Roasties’ - great! The meats were juicy, succulent and I think slow roasted, as they were sooo sooo tender. Among the five or so desserts on offer, there were pancakes and peaches, raspberry sponge cake and lemon sponge with custard. We chose the latter two. I certainly didn’t fancy a pudding because of the large amount of food I'd just consumed but I couldn’t resist a lemon sponge. I’m glad I did....sublime. There was one thing I was very disappointed with......usually when I go for a roast dinner, I finish the wife’s leftovers, but the greedy cow ate all her’s!!! All Change At Tiffany´s It's All Change at Tiffany’s (message to our customers) It’s 18 months since we took over Tiffany’s bar, in Puente Don Manuel, and we now feel that the time is right to put our own stamp on the business by changing its name. From October the bar will be known as ‘Fonzie’s, which all our regular customers will know is the familiar name given to Alfonso. To celebrate, there'll be a big re-naming party on Friday 15th October, with a disco, prizes and an outdoor barbeque. On the night we'll be introducing a Fonzie’s Loyalty Card, which is free of charge to all our loyal clientele and will be available to collect from the bar. The card will entitle the bearer to 25 per cent discount on all drinks (including branded spirits) between 5pm and 7pm every day and 10 per cent discount on food at anytime. During the winter months other promotions for card holders will be frequently announced on our Fonzie’s notice board and in The Sentinella magazine. Di has been cooking Sunday lunch at Tiffany’s for over two years now and it's so good that a local restaurant, who also serves Sunday lunch, tried to entice her away. Alcaucin

Sally Harrison from Axarquia Properties leads us through the towns of the Axarquia, starting this month with Alcaucin. First in our A to Z of Axarquía villages is Alcaucín, situated on the western slopes of La Maroma at the entrance to the Natural Park of the Sierras de Tejeda, close to the spectacular Zafarraya gap, where you can step out of Malaga and into the Granada province! The approximate translation of Al Cautín, now Alcaucin, is 'the Arches' possibly named because of the aqueduct! Village life centres around the pretty town square now renamed the Plaza de la Constitución with its 18th Century Parish Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and the Town Hall. The earthquake on Christmas day, 1884, badly affected this village with loss of life as well as the destruction of property, roads and trails and the alteration of subterranean streams. And if that wasn´t enough heavy snowfall that year prevented much needed assistance to the villagers. There are several bars and restaurants which serve delicious local cuisine. The eight areas that make up this municipality are Puente Don Manuel, Los Morales, Los Cortijillos, Las Monjas, Venta Baja, Venta Alta, El Pilarejo and El Espino. When you have finished your tour of the village you can walk back down the Paseo de las Barriadas and take your pick of any one of the decoratively tiled benches, which bear the names of these areas, to rest for a while. If strolling through the village hasn´t given you enough exercise, then why not challenge yourself to reach the highest point of Axarquía by climbing to the top of La Maroma? In early colonial times, pumpkins were used as an ingredient for the crust of pies, not the filling.

Pumpkins are native to North America and have been domestically grown there for five thousand years.

in 1584, after French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the saint Lawrence region of North america, he reported finding "gros melons" (large melons). the name was translated into English as "pompions," which has since evolved into the modern "pumpkin." Pumpkins are low in calories, fat, and sodium and high in fibre. They are good sources of Vitamin A, Vitamin B, potassium, protein, and iron. the largest pumpkin ever grown was over 1100 by a man in Ohio, in 2000.

Pumpkins range in size from less than a pound to over 1,000 pounds. Pumpkins are 90 per cent water. Eighty percent of the pumpkin supply in the United States is available in October. Colonists sliced off pumpkin tips; removed seeds and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. this was baked in hot ashes and is the origin of pumpkin pie. Native Americans flattened strips of pumpkins, dried them and made mats.

Pumpkins require a long hot growing season and loads of humus, manure and water. the largest pumpkin pie ever made was over five feet in diameter and weighed over 350 pounds. it used 80 pounds of cooked pumpkin, 36 pounds of sugar, 12 dozen eggs and took six hours to bake. In rural areas, bonfires are lit as they were centuries ago, and all over the country children dress up in costumes and spend the evening "trick-ortreating”. At the parties, many games are played, including a card game where cards are laid face down on a table with candy or coins underneath them. A muslinwrapped treat is baked inside the cake that, it is said, can foretell the eater's future. Halloween Throughtout The World (Continued) China In China, the Halloween festival is known as Teng Chieh. Food and water are placed in front of photographs of family members who have departed while bonfires and lanterns are lit in order to light the paths of the spirits as they travel the earth on Halloween night. Worshippers in Buddhist temples fashion "boats of the law" from paper, which are burned in the evening hours. The purpose of this custom is twofold: as a remembrance of the dead and in order to free the spirits of the "pretas" in order for them to ascend to heaven. "Pretas" are the spirits of those who died as a result of an accident or drowning and whose bodies were consequently never buried. The presence of "pretas" among the living is thought by the Chinese to be dangerous. Czechoslovakia In Czechoslovakia, chairs are placed by the fireside on Halloween night. There is one chair for each living family member and one for each

family member's spirit. germany In Germany people put away their knives on Halloween night. The reason for this is because they do not want to risk harm to (or from) the returning spirits. korea In Korea, the festival similar to Halloween is known as "Chusok." It is at this time that families thank their ancestors for the fruits of their labour. The family pays respect to these ancestors by visiting their tombs and making offerings of rice and fruits. The "Chusok" festival takes place in the month of August. Mind, Body & Spirit Following last month’s article on the effect drugs have on long-term health, this month I’d like to address a related issue, which is absolutely central to the holistic approach to health and healing: responsibility. There's an old joke which goes: "How many healers does it take to change a light-bulb?" Answer: "Just one, but the light-bulb must really want to change!" I often meet people who, having exhausted conventional medical treatments, turn to holistic therapy in the hope of finding a cure for some long standing or serious problem. Yet they do so from exactly the same perspective of simply wanting someone or something to eliminate the symptoms without understanding that the root causes lie much deeper and may involve profound changes in many areas of their life in order to bring about a real and lasting cure. The attitude is basically one of “cure me”, as if the disease was a random accident bearing no relationship to themselves or how they are living, or the totality of their life to date. Often insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting a different result! Attempting to eliminate a certain condition, or set of symptoms, without changing the habitual behaviours and attitudes which are causing them is, of course, futile. If you keep doing what you have always done, you will keep getting what you have always got. If we take responsibility for our own life, health and happiness and accept that if something “goes wrong,” the reasons are usually found within ourselves, we can start to walk the crucial and defining path to holistic healing. It's also the start of living one’s life from a place of pro-active creativity and mastery rather than re-

active or passive resignation and victimhood. Once firmly grasped, responsibility for one’s life becomes a precious treasure never to be relinquished; the key which unlocks all doors and dissolves all blocks to happiness and fulfilment of our true potential, both as individuals and in our relationships. Responsibility equals power! The greater the responsibility you're willing to take on, the more power you will have over your life, your health and your relationships. You begin to realise that you live in a co-creative reality, in which the potential for self-exploration, self-actualisation, health, happiness and success is virtually unlimited. Life becomes an exciting adventure to be lived, rather than a struggle to be endured A final and important point. Responsibility is not about guilt. Many of us have suffered terrible treatment and experiences in our childhoods or pasts. Sometimes there can be a morbid tendency to blame oneself for things which were absolutely not your fault. Of course such things are not our responsibility, and misplaced guilt and self-blame are utterly counter-productive to healing. What we can claim responsibility for is how we are going to respond to such woundings now and hereafter - what we are willing to make of our present life, and therefore our future.
