Sometimes a lovely expat from the Axarquia region emails me and asks how I am doing since leaving Spain for the US. I do my best provide a snapshot of my life in these monthly editorials, but it’s hard to cram everything into a few paragraphs. However, this month I can say it all in just one sentence: “I’m getting married!” That may come as a shock to some of you. Perhaps even more of a shock to learn that my husband-to-be is 38 years older than me. We met when I went on a wilderness trip in Idaho a couple of years back – he facilitated it, so yes ladies, he’s very fit and healthy! Since then, we stayed in touch, visited each other when our schedules allowed, and we quickly developed a beautiful, romantic relationship, where time and space seem to slip away to some mysterious place I didn’t even know existed. This part of my life is teaching me a lot about judgement (how others judge what they don’t understand or accept about themselves) and about the importance of following my heart and being true to myself no matter what disapproval or disagreement I may encounter from others. Also, it has taught me that beyond our physical bodies, we are really all eternal souls and in that sacred space there is no age. That last part might be going a little too deep and mystical for many!

Strange News A university graduate claims a job interview at Currys turned into "a scene out of The Office" when he was asked to dance to a Daft Punk song. Alan Bacon, 21, claims he was left "humiliated" after being told to dance to Around the World in front of a group of interviewers at the Cardiff branch of the electrical store. "I just felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable," said Mr Bacon. "I ended up dancing to Around the World by Daft Punk, doing rubbish robotics in my suit in front of a group of strangers. "I told my dad it was like a scene out of The Office. I would have walked out but I need a job. "I've been to quite a few job interviews and have never had to do anything like it before." Currys have since apologised and insisted the dance segment of the interview is not part of its official recruitment processes, according to BBC Wales online. Slippery Slope - A giant slide has been installed at the venerable Cliveden stately home while a 350-year-old staircase is repaired. Visitors to the estate near Beaconsfield in Berkshire can use the 21ft-high slide as an alternative route from the south terrace to the formal garden. The repairs are part of a £3.4m restoration project by the National Trust. Renowned for hosting exclusive parties and political gatherings, the estate became linked to the Profumo Affair because it was where war minister John Profumo first met 19-year-old Christine Keeler in 1961 and started a relationship. De Cotta Law FAMILY LAW NEWS By De Cotta Law ChiLDrEN, CUSTODY aND ViSiTS There have been a lot of stories about the increase in child abduction cases between countries where parents live in different countries or have to leave the country they are living in for economic reasons. Sadly the issue of child custody and visits is one that arises in the summer holidays when the parents don´t have an agreement and are living apart. Spanish courts are very strong in protecting the rights of a parent to spend time with their children. Judges generally award every other weekend to the parent who doesn´t live with the child and 4 weeks in the summer, with alternate Christmas and Easter holidays. When advising parents we always stress that while it is preferable to reach agreement privately, if it is necessary to go to court you must expect this type of order to be given. Naturally the majority of parents fully appreciate the need for their children to have time with each parent and also understand that for children routine helps to create stability and reduces the stress of a breakdown in the parent’s relationship. All lawyers now encourage a dialogue between the couple and professional advice and help with reaching a settlement can remove some of the barriers to a private agreement so there is no need for a contentious court proceeding. The agreement should be formalised in the country where the children are living and will deal with maintenance and future arrangements. It is often advisable to put in a clause about the possibility of one of the parents moving to another country and have an agreement to revise the visiting arrangements if that does happen. For example if one parent returns to their home country they may want to have long weekends every month and more time during the holiday period. Older children may be expressing strong views about the future arrangements and the Judges will listen to these views in some cases. How-

ever it is very important that the children are not made to feel they must choose between the parents so again it is better to reach agreement rather than putting any pressure on them to make decisions. Having a good understanding of what is likely to happen in court if the parents can´t reach agreement often helps a couple to settle things between them. Judges do focus on the needs and interests of the children and will be prepared to intervene if they think these are not being met equally. There have now been some decisions on joint custody in Spain and it seems likely this will be extended in the future. Halloween Fun Want to have fun or create a good scare? Halloween is not only for treats, it's for tricks too. We've got some good ideas for pranks and jokes here that are sure to get a surprised reaction. Funny or not, we focus on pranks that are not destructive to anyone's property or well-being - it's just not cool. Dress up as though you are the inanimate Halloween Decor for your lawn. Example: scarecrow, Frankenstein, etc. Be as still as you can. When someone walks by, jump out and scare the heck out of them. Sciatica is the name given to any sort of pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet. When something compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve, it can cause a pain that radiates out from your lower back and travels down your leg to your calf. Sciatic pain can range from being mild to very painful. Causes of sciatica A slipped disc is the most common identified cause of sciatica, but in some cases there is no obvious cause. Less common causes include spinal stenosis (narrowing of the nerve passages in the spine), injury, infection or a growth in the spine. When to see your GP Most people find their sciatic pain goes away naturally within a few days or weeks. Dangerous Dogs Dog Laws in Andalucia bought to us by Tina from Happy Hounds. Before taking on the responsibility of a dog it is worth consulting your vet and the laws on keeping certain breeds of dog. Some dogs are abandoned because the owners did not know of the newer, stricter laws in Andalucia that govern ownership of potentially dangerous animals. These laws target certain breeds and cross breeds of dog including Rottweiler, Doberman, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier, Akita, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and Tosa Inu. In addition, dogs with one or more characteristics of these breeds such as strong musculature; a deep chest with a height over 50cm and weighing more than 20 kilos; large square head with wide skull and strong jaws; short hair (it really says this); broad, short and muscled neck; etc. may also be classified as potentially dangerous. And finally, a dog with a history of aggression towards humans or other animals also falls into this category and the owner must comply with the following requirements, your dog only needs to show potential aggression to be considered dangerous.

Anyone who owns a potentially dangerous dog must have proof of identity (passport or residence card), proof of no criminal record; a doctor’s report stating they are physically and mentally fit to handle such a dog; proof of full vaccinations and microchip; proof the dog has completed a training course and liability insurance for at least 175,000€. Once all these requirements are met the owner must apply for a special license and register the animal with the town hall annually. Furthermore, whenever the owner takes the dog out it must be on a short leash (maximum length of 1 metre), no extendable leads, it must wear a muzzle at all times, the owner must carry the license and registration paperwork with them, and the animal cannot enter a recreational area such as a park, beach or playground. The truth is that any breed of dog has the capacity to be dangerous, and it is down to the owners to understand their dog and see the signs if there dog is showing any aggression towards people or other animals. Three Cautionary Tales Following on from last month about how people try to cheat us all, third and final senario number three. Last month (x) called Mr. Smith, in the UK went into a Chinese restaurant to pick up an order that he had telephoned. Mr. Smith paid by using his Visa Card which, of course, is linked directly to his current Account. The young man behind the counter took his card, swiped it, then laid it on the counter as he waited for it to clear, which is a pretty standard procedure. While he waited, he picked up his mobile phone and started dialling. Mr. Smith just noticed the phone because it is the same model his daughter uses, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Then he heard the click that sounds like her phone sounds when she takes a picture. He then gave me back my card but kept the phone in his hand as if he was still pressing buttons. Meanwhile, Mr. Smith was thinking: I wonder what he is taking a picture of, oblivious at the time to what he was really doing.

It then dawned on Mr. Smith: the only thing there was my credit card, so now he started paying much closer attention... He set his phone on the counter, leaving it open. About five seconds later, he heard the chime that indicated the picture has been saved. Mr. Smith was standing there struggling with the fact that this boy just took a picture of his credit card. He didn't say anything to him as the consequences had still not dawned on him. Yes, he had done it so smoothly, because if his daughter had not had the same kind of phone, he probably would never have realised what happened. Needless to say, he immediately walked to the bank and cancelled that card.. Just be aware of your surroundings at all times. Whenever you are using your credit card take caution and don't be careless. Notice who is standing near you and what they are doing when you use your card. Never let your card out of your sight!

New Mum In Town - It’s Peppa Time New Mum In Town - Back to school; sort of It's September, and autumn is upon us... in some parts of Spain perhaps! Here in Almuñecar, it is still glorious sunshine and hot hot hot; we are still swimming in the sea! Little Jazmin is growing up fast. She has added to her Spanglish list of vocabulary, and her new favourite games are 'Mami, where are you...??' and 'night' (night sounds great, but that is her tucking her teddies into bed, not tucking herself in). In the Nightgarden has become the main evening TV, but Peppa is still up there! Joy! However, she is becoming a little madam. Everything she sees she wants and everything is hers -- like mother like daughter perhaps!) This is apparently normal, but I do not like it that when her friend comes over, Jazmin gets so anxious and territorial over her toys. She hits, pushes, snatches, screams...big tantrums! NOOOOOOOOOOOO...too young for that, surely! I know we Mums shouldn’t compare, but it's so hard when her friend is not like that at all -- just influenced by Jazmin I'm sure. The playdates were becoming quite stressful for both babies and Mummies, so Jazmin is going back to nursery. I love my baby girl, and we spend our time singing, playing and learning, but she does need more stimulation (and a chance to be a little less clingy to Mum) so here's hoping that nursery has the answer. Another bonus is that at nursery, sharing is a must! It will only be a couple of hours each day; it will do her good….. it will...it will...(Mami's new mantra.) YAHOO! We have survived the back to nursery week! At first Miss J was not sure at all, but as soon as she saw good old Dora the Explorer lying on the floor, she leaped out of my arms and claimed it as hers...'Mami, Dora Dora!!' was all I heard. I stayed with her for a bit, to help her feel secure, then I left. Whilst Jazmin was 'adapting' I kept myself occupied (and hot) in town. The time just flew by and before I knew it, I was back at the nursery to pick her up. I couldn't wait to see her, and I was preparing myself for a tear-stained, puffy face (Jazmin's, not mine), but...o...little J didn't even notice me! WHAT? It took her 10 minutes to realise that Mami was there. Positive start to adapting and interacting with other children me thinks.

However, when she did clap eyes on me, my heart (and eyes) filled with raw emotion as she dropped everything, ran like Forrest Gump and gave me the biggest cuddle and besito! I put on a tough Mum face, swallowed the lump that had started to form in my throat, smiled and just squeezed her back - aww, my little baby is growing up! Another bonus has been that Jazmin gets home, eats her lunch like there is no tomorrow (which has been a real battle recently), and sleeps a good siesta. Result! What was I worrying about?... Miss J is fine at nursery -- she even wanted to go back in on Friday! Note to self - Jazmin and I are incredibly bonded and she does need me, but she is also fine if I am not around for a little while. Advice to new mums - it is good to try and remember this from time to time, otherwise you could find yourself getting bogged down in Mummy duties and forgetting simple things like laughing, relaxing or taking time out! Another new first...wait for it....Mami (aka me) is going back to work! EEEKK! Find out all about it next month...

Riogordo Restaurant Has Re-Opened! Yes, you will all be pleased to hear that The Lemon Tree Restaurant in Riogordo has reopened its doors. Di and Jan re-opened this quaint international bar/restaurant on the 2nd August this year and yes, before you are left wondering, are they continuing with the Lemon Trees famous Sunday Roasts? Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to a call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-yr old girl to hold a torch high over her Mummy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby. Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed and after a little while, Chloe was born. The paramedic lifted her by her little feet and spanked her on her bottom. Chloe began to cry. The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-yr old what she thought about what she had just witnessed. Kathleen quickly responded, "She shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place....Smack her bottom again!"

Torre Del Mar

At 28 kilometres east of Málaga you will find this charming sea-side resort that is part of the scenic Axarquía route of sun and avocado. The main crop of this area used to be sugar cane and the few fields that still lead down from the coast road to the sea shore are testament to this. However, in this ever changing and financially material world we live in the farmers find that crops such as mangoes and avocadoes are much more economically friendly! One of the few remaining Osborne Bulls looms over the town from its high position above the naturist beach at Almayate where the river divides the two towns and spews water and other things onto the beach after heavy rainfall! Sugar cane was introduced to the area in the 10th century by the Muslims and a Coruña Zagra named Ramon built the first industrial manufacture of sugar cane in Torre del Mar on the site of an old mill. The Factory, (Ingenio Azucarero) called Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Torre del Mar, was active in 1991 and went through several owners. The chimneys and sugar mill are still standing today and can be seen in the middle of the town. If you love peace and quiet the two days of the year to avoid visiting this bustling town are its main festivals where the place is heaving. These are July 26th for the feast day of its patron saints, Santiago and Santa Ana and of course the eve of the feast of the Virgin del Carmen on July 15th when everyone camps out on the beaches, lighting bonfires and jump-

ing over them three times to cleanse and purify their souls before dipping into the sea at midnight to bring good luck for the coming year and wash away any lurking evil spirits. Like many areas in the Axarquía, Torre del Mar dates back to the Carthaginians, Phoenician, and Roman times and was used as a main port in the 10th century when the town was called Miraya Ballis! In the 15th century there was a castle that defended attacks from pirates and foreigners. It takes its new name, Tower of the Sea, from the many watchtowers that were all along its coastline during Roman and Moorish times. In the 19th century it was made up of four distinct Barrios or quarters, Barrio del Castillo, Barrio de la Viña, Barrio de la Parroquia and Casas Nuevas. In the beginning of the 20th century it had a train station and few spa´s and the town rather than defending against foreigners actively sought them out but it wasn´t until the 1960´s that tourism really came to town, when beach promenades and large avenues were built to accommodate them and infrastructures like hotels were built to keep them staying on! There was a new tram line linking the towns of Vélez-Málaga to Torre del Mar but sadly it is no longer in use due to the financial crisis! There is a street market right down by the beach open every evening until 3 am during the summer and a day market every Thursday. Torre del Mar is a fun place for old and young alike with plenty of ice-cream parlours to tempt even the most jaded of pallets!

Teachings from the Light: Letting Go By Keidi Keating A few months after The Light had launched into the world, I felt a little lost about what to do next. Why had God guided me to bringing out this book? Was that it? Was that all I had to do and now it was out there, I would go back to wondering what I was here for? I expressed my feelings of frustration to a friend, who looked at me and smiled with a knowing spark in her eyes. “Follow that which comes unsought,” she said to me. She explained that I could try to make any number of things happen, but that the things with the real power happen spontaneously, because they’re meant to. This made me think about how a tree is formed. Someone plants a seed and then the tree effortlessly grows, complete with branches, leaves and finally the succulent and delicious fruits. I knew that meant I had to take a step back and not try and force anything to happen, but rather by letting go of any expectations or outcomes, I would allow it to thrive naturally in Divine timing. And so I did. It was perfect timing as I was about to take a trip back to the UK to visit a friend who I hadn’t seen for several years. That’s when I received two emails in the space of one week inviting me to come and speak at different events. “Speaking? I hadn’t even considered that before. But God, if that’s what you want me to do, then who am I to say no!” and so I replied with a, “Yes, I’d love to come and speak to your audience.” The future was set and I was about to discover a hidden talent that I didn’t even know I had! From this incident I learned that forcing anything never works. We’ve all had the experience of trying to force someone to see our point of view or forcing a child to behave in a certain, preferred way. Rarely does that tactic work, as when someone pushes against your hands, the natural reaction is to push right back. The same happens with the Universe. Push and you’ll meet with resistance. By letting go you’ll allow the energy to flow!

$$$ Share’oscope $$$ Recipe Of The Month Mediterranean Chicken 4 chicken breasts, no skin 2 tbs oil 2 onions, peeled and chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 cans chopped tomatoes Good glug white wine 3 different coloured peppers, roughly chopped and seeds removed Jar olives in brine, drained 2 tsp sugar 1 tbsp tomato puree more if needed Method: 1. Cut the chicken into bite size pieces, heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the chicken and fry until browned on all sides. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. 2. Fry the onions and garlic until soft, add the chopped tomatoes and return the chicken to the pan. Add the wine and bring to the boil, reduce heat cover the pan and gently simmer for 30-45 minutes. 3. Add the peppers, olives and sugar cook for a further 15 minutes. Adjust the thickness with the tomato puree. Season to taste and serve with boiled rice.

Who are these people...? ....and what are they doing here?” were the words on the lips of puzzled customers at the Niza café in Velez Malaga on the morning of 5th Sept, when prospective members of Axarquia’s new choir, “Coral Bel Canto” gathered to meet their new conductor, Manolo Sanchidrián. 24 men and women of 7 different nationalities were enjoying drinks and churros and chatting to new friends in a variety of languages. They were then taken to the beautiful XVI century church of the Convent of Las Claras, with its stunning interior and high domed roof. Manolo took them through some warming-up exercises and explained how to intonate their voices to improve their singing. Then followed the choir learning a new piece in Latin by a 17th century composer, Antonio Lotti, as well as singing “Esta Tierra”, a much loved Spanish piece, and finishing with “Canticorum Jubilo” by Handel which is well-known in its English version, “Thine be the Glory”. A good time was had by all and “Coral Bel Canto” was truly launched. Bel Canto will be meeting at Las Claras every Thurs at 11am. New members will always be made welcome. As expats living in Spain, nothing reminds us of -- and keeps us connected to -- the UK more than having the ability to watch British television in our new homeland. While sipping his wine, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful. He asked the waiter, 'What is that you just served?' The waiter replied, 'Si senor, you have excellent taste! Those are called Cojones de Toro, bull's testicles from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!' The guy from Alabama said, 'What the heck, bring me an order.' The waiter replied, 'I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bull fight each morning. If you come early and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy.' The next morning, the Alabamian returned, placed his order, and that evening was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. A friendly trucker stops to see if he can help and the scousers ask him for a lift. He tells them he has no room in the wagon as he is carrying 20,000 bowling balls but will take a look at the bike for them. He tries everything he knows but is unable to repair it. Time is getting on now and he's late for his delivery so he tells the scousers he has to leave. "R hey lad" they say "gissa lift". The trucker once again explains that he has no room as he is carrying 20,000 bowling balls. The scousers put it to the driver that if they can manage to fit in the back will he take them and he agrees. They manage to squeeze themselves and their motorbike into the back of the wagon so the driver shuts the doors and gets off on his way. By this time he is really late and so puts his foot down. Sure enough PC Plod of Greater Manchester Police pulls him up for speeding. The good officer asks the driver what he is carrying to which he replies Scouse Eggs. The policeman obviously doesn't believe this so wants to take a look. He opens the back door and quickly shuts it and locks it. He gets onto his radio and calls for immediate backup from as many officers as possible. The dispatcher asks what emergency he has that requires so many officers. "I've got a wagon with 20,000 Scouse eggs in it - 2 have already hatched and the b******* have managed to nick a motorbike already".
