Merry Christmas Dear Sentinella Readers! Welcome to your new look The Sentinella, now all glossy with MORE colour pages than ever before, just in time for Chrimbo!!

The time of the year of overspending on presents and wondering what the hell to buy him this year has thrust itself upon us once again.

Men try and make our lives easier this year and actually have an interest in something apart from PSP and golf! Or better still just give us a list of what you want. And please do remember that we like to be spoilt. We don’t like electronic items just because you do. We do like girly things – just look for anything pink and frilly (apart from the first thing that comes into your head…tut tut!!)

I have started my Christmas shopping early this year in a bid to have it all done and dusted (wrapped and all) by the middle of December. I despise the last minute rush and the long panicky queues, where people appear to impulse buy under vast mounds of pressure.

Every year I make my parents up a stocking. Some may say they are past all that, but actually they love their stockings and of course I do exchange them on Christmas Eve for mine!

Thieves steal church

Strange News

A church has vanished from the Russian village where it stood for almost 200 years. The Church of Christ's Resurrection, in the central Russian village of Komarovo, was built in 1809 but in early October someone took it away brick by 4

brick.

Komarovo is in the Ivanovo region, north-east of Moscow. The church was not in use but clergy had been considering resuming services there.

A survey of the large, two-storey church a few months ago found that it was structurally sound, but now all that remains are the foundations and sections of walls."

Britain's most irritating expressions

Researchers at Oxford University have compiled a top ten of the most irritating expressions.

Top of the list was "at the end of the day", followed by "fairly unique". Also making the top ten is the grammatically incorrect "shouldn't of", instead of "shouldn't have".

The phrases appear in a book called Damp Squid, named after the mistake of confusing a squid with a squib.

Other irritating phrases in the top ten include “with all due respect”, “it’s a nightmare” and “It’s not rocket science.”

Man glued to toilet

A man had to be taken to hospital attached to a toilet after super-glue was deliberately smeared on the seat.

Fire fighters were unable to free the man and were forced to remove the stainless steel loo with the man still attached.

The 35-year-old was in a public toilet cubicle in Brierley Hill in the West Midlands when he became stuck.

He was taken to hospital where doctors had to get into the ambulance before using chemicals to free him.

It is thought the glue had been smeared on the toilet seat by a prankster. The toilet was later taken back to the public convenience and re-installed.

Don’t mess up this Christmas, take note of our handy tips.

1. Order invitations online. Try... www.hallmark.com/www.paperstyle.com or www.finestationary.com If the party will be more casual, call or email. Don’t forget about e-cards!

2. Make a to-do list.

What do you need to bake, clean or rearrange before the party? Think of the big picture first, then break it down and schedule the details.

3. Make a timetable.

When serving dinner parties, work out all the details on paper. Work backwards from serving, to baking, to preheating the oven to food prep. If you employ this kind of organisation, everything should flow smoothly.

1. A nursery school pupil told his teacher he'd found a cat, but it was dead.

'How do you know that the cat was dead?' she asked her pupil.

A bit of bad news as this is the last Good Bad Ugly to meet your eyes, as we have now exhausted the entire alphabet! Zebra Crossings Just what clever Spaniard invented the ludicrous rule that cars, lorries and ten ton trailers do not have to stop unless the pedestrian in question has actually planted a foot on the zebra crossing?

How ridiculous. They as may just say “tough luck pedestrians you’re all gonna be splatted to death.” To be honest even as a driver I have nearly had a few accidents when the car in front has suddenly slammed on the brakes as a mother with her buggy steps on the road, wishing to cross some time that day.

Robins

• During the breeding season Robins mostly eat animal material, including earthworms, beetles, grasshoppers, ants, caterpillars, spiders, and snails.

• Robins hunt on lawns, pastures, fields, and meadows, standing still with their heads cocked to one side as though listening for their prey, but actually discovering it by sight.

• Robins nest in deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, and hedges, as well as under bridges and on windowsills and other ledges.

• Females select the nest site and do the majority of nest building over a two - six day period.

• Robins often nest in the same area, or a nearby area, year after year.

• During breeding the female incubates three to four glossy, light blue eggs for 12 to 14 days.

• Robins have a high mortality rate, with up to 80 percent of the young dying each year.

Homeowners often watch in amazement as the male Robin beats himself silly against the glass, under the impression that he is attacking another Robin.

This month Aunt Sally tackles Temper Tantrums

(Q) Why does my child have temper tantrums and what can I do?

Emma in Benamocarra (A) Children between the ages of 1 to 3 are especially prone to such episodes.

These usually occur because your child is beginning to understand a lot more of the words they hear, yet their ability to produce language is so limited. When your child can't express how they feel or what they want to say it amounts to frustration. Don't lose your cool. A tantrum is not a pretty sight, in addition to kicking, screaming or pounding the floor, your child may include throwing things, hitting and even holding their breath to the point of turning blue. Children at this stage of the tantrum are unlikely to listen to reason so to stay with your child during a tantrum is a good idea. Wait and ignore the tantrum, say nothing until they calm down, rather than rewarding negative behaviour. Another method which can be effective with some children is to hold them, if they don't struggle to much this can be comforting for you and the child. REMEMBER YOUR THE ADULT. No matter how long the tantrum goes on fo don't give in or reward for unreasonable behaviour. It can be tempting in public to give in for a quiet life dont! Try not to worry about what other people say or think. You need to set boundaries for your child now.

Obviously if your child is in a unsafe place or starts to hit out at other people or animals then you must move them to somewhere safe. If you’re at home you could put them in there bedroom and stay with them.

Once the storm has calmed talk to your child about what happened be patience and loving.

As your childs speech develops they will be able to express to you their frustrations by words. Your child is developing independence and like adults don't want to be told what to do or told ‘no’ all the time. Give praise where praise is due and encourage good behaviour.

Try to recognise the triggers for your childs tantrum which can help avoid them. Although daily tantrums are perfectly normal, you have to consider other circumstances that might effect them, like moving house or one parents absents from the home. This can provoke a change in your childs behaviour. By the time they reach 3 most have developed in speech and able to communicate better and understand right from wrong Thank you for this question Emma I hope it helps you both.

How To Make a Christmas Cake

Celebrate Christmas Day in luxury and make this scrummy cake!

Ingredients: •2 (8 ounce) containers candied cherries •1 (8 ounce) container candied mixed citrus peel •2 cups raisins •1 cup dried currants •1 cup dates, pitted and chopped •2 (2.25 ounce) packages blanched slivered almonds •1/2 cup brandy •1/2 cup all-purpose flour •2 cups all-purpose flour •1/2 teaspoon baking soda •1 teaspoon ground cloves •1 teaspoon ground allspice •1 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/2 teaspoon salt •1 cup butter •2 cups packed brown sugar •6 eggs •3/4 cup molasses •3/4 cup apple juice

Directions: 1. In a medium bowl, combine cherries, citrus peel, raisins, currants, dates, and almonds. Stir in brandy; let stand 2 hours, or overnight. Dredge soaked fruit with 1/2 cup flour.

2. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C). Grease an 8 x 8 x 3 inch fruit cake pan, line with parchment paper, and grease again. In a small bowl, mix together 2 cups flour, baking soda, cloves, allspice, cinnamon, and salt; set aside.

3. In a large bowl, cream butter until light.

Gradually blend in brown sugar and eggs.

Mix together molasses and apple juice.

Beat into butter mixture alternately with flour mixture, making 4 dry and 3 liquid additions. Fold in floured fruit. Turn batter into prepared pan.

4. Bake in preheated oven for 3 to 3 1/2 hours, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of cake comes out clean. Remove from pan, and lift off paper. Cool cake completely, then wrap loosely in waxed paper. Store in an airtight container.

For the Royal Icing: •4 egg whites •half teaspoon lemon juice •2lb icing sugar •1 teaspoon glycerine

Directions: Put the egg whites and lemon juice in a bowl and beat to a light froth with a wooden spoon.

Sift the icing sugar and add to bowl a tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition, until the icing stands in firm peaks. Add the glycerine. Mix well, cover with a damp cloth or polythene until required.

To ice the cake: Brush almond paste with lightly beaten egg white. Spread the icing over the almond paste roughing up with the flat edge of a knife into small peaks on the top of the cake and larger peaks around the sides.

Decorate with bought Father Christmas, Christmas tree and artificial holly.

Algarrobo is situated 37 kilometres east of Malaga. It has four urban nuclei: Algarrobo Costa, Mezquitilla and Lagos on the coast, and Algarrobo Pueblo 4 kilometres inland and 85 metres above sea level. It lies within the area of Axarquia, on the scenic Route of Sun and Wine, and has a residential population of 4,600 which increases with tourism along the coast during the summer months.

Algarrobo Costa, once a fishing village, is

now mostly dedicated to tourism with high rise apartment blocks along the sandy beach. Mezquitilla and Lagos however, are still unspoilt sea-side villages with colourful fishing boats stranded on the sand. The coastal road is dotted with watchtowers built in the 16th century for defense over the beaches. There are two of these at Algarrobo, the Torre Ladeado and the Torre Derecha and another at the small coastal village of Lagos.

Cantueso & Discount Vouchers

Free to Property Owners

A novel marketing scheme is just being introduced by Restaurante Cantueso in Periana. It is designed to encourage holiday-makers to visit their restaurant by offering a discount voucher which can be used on their first visit. Books of vouchers will be available through owners of rental properties for them to give to guests. The vouchers will be free to property owners who register for the scheme and personalised with the name of the property.

Nicky Scott at Cantueso says that over the last two years they have noticed just how many tourists make repeat visits, particu-

larly when they discover the restaurant early enough during their stay, and this scheme she hopes will encourage an early visit.

There will be no limit to the number of guests in a party who may benefit from the vouchers, and property owners are simply asked to hand over the vouchers at the beginning of the rental period. She also tells us that early indications from a pilot scheme shows that renters appreciate the thoughtfulness of the offer and that it reflects well on the owners.

PACOS & VEGETABLES I remember someone commenting about the lazy nature of the Spanish, a myth conjured up by the first package holiday makers of the 1970’s I think, who came home bearing reports of eternal siestas and “mañana”! Nothing could be further from the truth as those of you who have ventured inland to these thriving villages can bear witness to.

Benamargosa is predominantly an agricultural village but during the last 20 years I have seen new businesses start and flourish and have watched my previously cash poor neighbours enjoy relevant affluence. With “recession” now on everybody’s lips, without whingeing and whining, those same ever resourceful neighbours and their families are returning to their land. Miguel told me that if you have some land you will never starve and he has sown more vegetables this autumn. Some families admitted that they have not kept a pig for a few years but now the sheds are white washed and the animals installed. Paco breeds rabbits and will do enough to sell as well as for his own use and when I mentioned to Maria that it was a shame that it had rained on All Saints Day after all of the work cleaning and decorating the cemetery, she smiled and happily told me that the dearly departed had sent us the rain because they knew that it was much needed.

Old traditions have threatened to die out, after all, who wants to weave a basket for a few centimos? Benamargosa no longer has esparto weavers yet Juan told me that when he and Maria were

newly weds (long before television, plastic bags or nylon string) winter evenings were spent making satchels and water bottle holders whilst she sewed. Much of the furniture was hand made during the shorter daylight hours when working outdoors was cut short.

At LA VAQUERIA we are doing our best to revive some of these old crafts whist keeping costs down. Our onsite workshop not only houses the woodcarving classes but also undertakes repair and restoration work and with THE FURNITURE BARNS offering a made to measure facility I suspect that our new master carpenter is going to be kept busy. Born and trained in Holland, he is also fluent in German. With Jorge, originally from Buenos Aires overseeing or undertaking the carving we feel confident that we can not only fix anything but also that our prices are reasonable as we are all growing our own vegetables!!

My mission for the month has been to track down the elusive esparto weavers!

Quite an adventure as the knowledge tends to be passed from father to son so knocking on doors introducing myself to a long line of Pacos seemed the sensible course. Not a job to be undertaken when you are pushed for time as everybody wants a chat and most Spanish have this remarkable knack of never appearing to be in hurry! I have eaten more cake, bread and home made sausage than I will at Christmas but as yet have still to unearth the genealogical secrets of a particular area in an old part of Velez Malaga where the weavers used to live…watch this space!

When is the right time to learn Spanish?

Is the time ever right I ask myself. Until one day a few weeks ago my just turned four year old! came home from school chatting away in what sounded like perfect Spainsh, but I will never know what she was saying, so I decided the time is now right for me.

I contacted BEM idiomas school in Velez Malaga and spoke to Viviane who discussed with me what style of teaching would be best for me. This turned out to begin with, one-to-one lessons.

The day had come and I won’t lie I was very nervous but once I met my teacher who made me feel very comfortable and at ease, come the end of the hour lesson I had actually really enjoyed myself and it was a shame it had gone so quick. I started off having two one hour sessions per week and have had just had 3 lessons and already I am finding myself understanding and speaking more Spanish.

By the time you read this BEM idiomas would have moved to a brand new location just up the road due to the high demand of classes, as they do not only teach Spanish they also teach English, German and French and also children who want to study English. They have 7 fully qualified teachers all who have University degrees to teach a foreign language. Occasionally if needed more teachers are on stand by

for extra work – so they will always fit you in.

BEM idiomas offers a whole range of lessons to suit all needs private one to one or private for two people who prefer not to have more classmates, or groups of 3 – 8 people who have the same level. Generally speaking students prefer to have 2 hours or 4 hours a week as opposed to an intensive course.

I anticipated a long lay in, followed by a leisurely breakfast from the buffet cart, before maybe setting off to see a temple or two and fitting in some shopping before dinner. But no.

“Up tomorrow at 2.30am,” said our Guide as we arrived at the cruise ship at 10pm after a gruelling flight. “Bring your pillows.” That day we didn’t return to somewhere after 9pm and it was up again the following morning at 5am.

And that is pretty much the way the whole holiday panned out. For most of the time I was walking around various temples (which all looked similar anyway) bleary eyed and dreaming of when the next sleep would occur.

However, on a positive note I was impressed with the temples, covered by hyrogryphics and funny symbols. Our Guide was fantastic and explained the story behind every ruin, with perhaps a tad too much detail at times.

The men were of the same mould as Moroccans – staring a tad too fixedly, offering my boyfriend camels for me (at times I think he was tempted) and haggling over items worth a few Euros. But it was a nice change to absorb a bit of their culture.

We began the Nile cruise in Aswan then worked along to Luxor before flying to Cairo for some more trips. The City was amazing and opened my eyes to the Egyptian way of life.

They have a weird trend there where entire streets are full of a certain kind of shop. So if you want a piece of jewellery you go to the jewellery street, if you want a head scarf (as the women there do) go to the head scarf street, etc, etc…

I had a bit of a wrong‘un moment when I decided to wear a skirt on the morning of a visit to the mosque. I was forced to wear a hideous green piece of material

which covered my entire body, which my boyfriend found most humorous.

The pyramids were amazing and definitely the best part of the holiday. I did venture inside one too, but only three steps, because I suffer from claustrophobia and the ceiling was just a bit too low for my liking, plus the people coming out were sweating, straining to breath and in some cases crying. I did ride a camel though.

We were thrilled to learn we had two whole days spare at the end of the holiday – “free days.” By that point we were feeling a bit too immersed in the Egyptian life so went to see a film at the cinema (in English with Arabic sub titles) and after to McDonalds where we ordered McArabias (not bad!)

On a final note if you think the Spanish can’t drive then you ‘aint seen nothing yet!

Two 90-year-old women, Rose and Barb, had been friends all of their lives.

When it was clear that Rose was dying, Barb visited her every day.

Horse Riding

Please mention The Sentinella when replying to adverts Les and Rob left London with great plans of running a horse-riding establishment in Andalucia. Like many they expected everything to go smoothly and to live out their days happily in the sunshine with not a care in the world. It didn’t quite work out that way and they ended up living in a small apartment in Granada with not a horse in sight.

Rob kept a record of their experiences by sending e-mails to friends back in the UK. Here their adventure continues...

“Since it’s nearly Christmas we thought we’d have a dry run at preparing a festive meal that we had planned for some friends. We've managed to learn how to read most of the food labels here in Spain. Sometimes though we make mistakes. We bought something clearly labelled "Pavo" (Turkey). It looked like a Turkey and mostly seemed like one until we carved it. I'm not sure what it was, maybe a big sausage in Turkey skin.

We've realised that the big letters on

food labels don't necessarily refer to the main ingredients but might just mean that it has been in the vicinity of same.

No importa! We ate it. Some of it. We had lot's of Cava and bacon butties to wash it down so all wasn't lost. We’ve cancelled the dinner. We went to the coast at the weekend again, it rained!

They had a pre-Christmas party on the camp-site in a sort of conservatory, which I'm sure is lovely in the summer but was bloody freezing that night, despite the feeble gas heater in the corner and the brave attempts at festive decoration (fake snow on the windows and tinsel on the potted palms). The randomly scattered buckets designed to catch the leaks from the roof proved hazardous to the merry, drunken campers but they mostly managed to dance round them with few mishaps. The major high-light was the, very pretty young Spanish barmaid who got a bit carried away trying to teach a lecherous elderly chap some kind of Flamenco (the X-rated version). It was all going well at first, the old bloke was certainly enjoying it but it was cut

It was still raining…. so much that the pump that runs the water system in our camp-site (brilliantly located underground!!!) got flooded and broke. We ended up the victims of too much water which cut of our water, so we came back to Granada. In Granada it's raining.

There's a digger in our street, apparently there's something wrong with the water, so they've dug up the road, no-one's mentioned putting it back!. It's only a small digger, but it's only a small street.

We now have to take a detour several streets out of our way just to avoid a bloody tonka toy blocking the passage.

We did squeeze past it once, the locals do, but we got covered in grease and we haven't got enough water to go getting covered in, hard to remove, tonka grease again.
