Last month I endured the great joy of acquiring an official resident’s document, typically known as ‘residencia’. I’d muscled through with just the ‘tax resident’ title for the last five years, but it was about time for the upgrade, especially as I needed a new washing machine. The good electrical shops give customers a sizeable discount for the privilege of taking away your old one. I couldn’t deny myself such advantages. I’d put off ‘residencia’ for months, mainly because during my time here I’ve heard one too many complaints about the amount of time it takes to queue up at the Police Station, and that the whole damn process is nothing short of a palaver. Perhaps I fancied a palaver, but more than likely it was the lure of a discounted washing machine, so I trudged to the Police Station one sunny morning, along with my mum, who came to keep me company. When we arrived at the big locked doors, somewhere around 8.40am, there were already a dozen or so people meandering outside, all bleary-eyed and looking as bored as hell. We fastened ourselves to the end of what appeared to be the queue and propped against the wall for a slight slither of anything resembling comfort. Then a man and woman appeared, clearly English, as they were both sunburnt and he was wearing those hideous sandals with white socks pulled half-way up the leg. Rather annoyingly they decided to stop beyond my mother and I. We believed we had fallen victim to a pair of queue jumpers, but really they knew something we didn’t. Ten minutes later the doors were unlocked and a man handed out

Socks cheekily made sure he took one before me and I shot him a disgruntled look, thinking how he should visit the Fashion Police Station, rather than the ordinary one. Therefore I had found my first quibble. Not so much socks (although that’s a whole new quibble), but rather that the ticket system is unfair. Everyone piled in and for a moment I thought of that child’s party game, musical chairs, but without the music. I was impressed that the ticket numbers flew past rather quickly and within just five minutes my mum and I were sat behind the desk. The lady handed me a form to fill out and told me she needed a photocopy of my passport. I also needed to go and pay 10€ in the bank across the road. I wondered why I couldn’t just give her my ten Euro note and save a walk and the risk of being flattened by the tram when crossing the road. Unfortunately I was kept waiting behind the world’s slowest man at the bank, who seemed to be catching up on a year’s worth of tasks, and the man before me at the photocopying shop was making copies of each and every page of his Escritura, both sides. Nevertheless, we soon stepped back into the Police Station and I was delighted to sit at the desk straight away, without even needing to take another ticket I was disappointed to learn that they’ve done away with the old Resident’s Cards. Now all you get is a sheet of uninteresting paper, with a few fancy shiny bits on it, which look like they’ve been thrown on with no real thought. Plus, as the document doesn’t include a photo, for identification purposes it must be shown along with a passport. Kind of defeats the object don’t you think..? At this rate, I'll have to replace my handbag with a sack... Oh well, the ‘ordeal’ wasn’t so bad I suppose. It only took 40 minutes all in and at least now I can buy a washing machine and save a few Euros!

strange News A ‘Spit’ Weird…. China's equivalent of eBay has banned an online trader from selling the saliva of pretty teenage girls. The seller claimed the saliva was a 'tonic' and was asking the equivalent of £2 a small bottle. Listings for the bottles included pictures of the 18-year-old girls the saliva was supposedly taken from. However, auction house Taobao.com deleted the listings after receiving dozens of complaints from web surfers. Robot Snake New Spy Israeli military scientists have reportedly designed a robotic snake which can spy on enemies and plant bombs. The remote-controlled reptile is able to sneak through cracks in buildings to gather information on enemy combatants. A soldier controls the snake from a remote laptop and can follow what it sees via video cameras. Footage posted online shows the sixfoot long snake in camouflage gear, winding its way through rocks and tree stumps. The Israel Defence Forces plan to equip combat units with the models, which could also be used to find survivors trapped in collapsed buildings. It’s Raining…errrrrm…Tadpoles! Residents and scientists in Japan were baffled after it started raining tadpoles. Clouds of dead tadpoles fell from the sky in a number of cities in Ishikawa Prefecture at the start of the month. The raining down of small creatures such as frogs and fish is a rare meteorological phenomenon that is reported from time to time across the world. Scientists have widely attributed the surreal raining of animals to strong winds, storms and water sprouts sucking up creatures before depositing them further inland. However, this explanation has not satisfied meteorologists in the Ishikawa region.

Jardin de Pajaros In only 11 months, Hannelore and Rüdiger have transformed an ugly piece of waste land at Chiringuito Antonio’s into a beautiful Bird Park. Now there are some 100 different birds from five continents living in a wonderful creative garden. From a budgerigar to the big ara, from the small barn owl to the imposing eagle owl, there are lots to admire. There are also a couple of kookaburras, from Australia, which capture the attention of visitors with their laughter. Apart from the birds and flowers there are also some interesting sculptures, ceramics, including stone and wood arranged within the park. It really does stimulate ones senses. Rüdiger and Hannelore would like to make everyone feel welcome. There is also a seating area where visitors can enjoy good coffee and homemade Ger-

man cakes and let one’s soul drift away among the beauty and exotic sounds. Rüdiger had a Bird Park in Germany and is on hand to answer any questions in German, Spanish and English. School visits and birthday parties are always met with expert guidance and attention. Hannelore has worked as a masseuse and therapist for seven years in Spain, so why not combine the park visit with a massage or medical pedicure? They both see many more possibilities with the park in the future, such as ceramic and painting courses for the artists among us. What a great destination and ambience this would deliver. Entry to the park is only 1€ for adults and 0.50 cents for children. This just covers the bird feed, so you may feel you can afford a family visit. It’s well worth it! See advert on opposite page.

With the summer looming and having just moved into a new home which is quite a bit smaller than anything we have ever lived in, I was a bit apprehensive about how we would cope during the summer months. Although we have air conditioning I am not a great fan - excuse the pun - due to the sometimes adverse health reactions. In actual fact I now have a job to wake up on time, which has never happened before! gardening Time Now the high temperatures of summer are with us we will be using our terraces more and more. For those of us who are in the process of designing new terracing here are a few pointers which I hope will be of use to you. Even if you are not thinking of outside lighting it is always better to still put conduit for wiring as this will cost very little if done while the terrace is being constructed. If you require lighting at a later date it can be installed at a relatively low cost. Outside taps are normally on the wall of the house but it is very handy to have a tap away from the house and once again it can be installed much cheaper at this stage. Irrigation tubing should also be installed so as to hide unsightly pipes. Although I personally prefer raised beds on terraces lots of people like to grow plants in large pots and containers. If you plan where these will be, once again you can easily hide irrigation piping, ready to supply them when the terrace is completed. We have all heard of terraces breaking up and walls collapsing so it is very important to use reinforced concrete for the base and footings. The depth of concrete is relative to site conditions and terrain,

so if you are doing the project yourself please obtain advice from a professional. The choice of tiles is up to you but if you use ceramic tiles do use ones with outside quality and use a propriety brand of grout. As with any project, half the battle is in the planning as it is very expensive to rectify mistakes once the concrete is laid. A few extra hours of planning could save a lot of heartache in the long run. This time of year the main job to be carried out is watering and once again I would point out the importance of watering new trees and plants thoroughly, as otherwise they will die very easily. Also, keep an eye out for insects and fungus attacks, and spray if required. In last month’s article I said I would keep you updated on Paul and my efforts on the new allotment. We have already harvested lettuce and courgettes and all the other plants are showing signs of a good crop, although admittedly the tomato plants could be better. Looking over the fence into our neighbour’s established plots I can only say they would win the prizes at any vegetable show. Until next month, Don Browne.... Business Coaching By Keidi Keating, Editor Soaked with entrepreneurial spirits and seeping frustration, I decided to enlist the support of a Business Coach to help whisk a new business off the ground, which has been playing on my mind for months. Andi Roberts is his name and he’s based in the region of Cadiz, but as most coaching is conducted via the telephone and email, the distance isn’t problematic. My next step is to determine the niche audience I aim to target, plus decide what kind of products and services I would like to incorporate on my website. Well for those of you who have been following my ‘learning Spanish journey’, it’s been six months! Yes six months! Doesn’t time fly, when you’re having fun, isn’t that how saying goes?! I’ve had plenty of fun along the way, admittedly not all the time, but the majority… For those of you who are just joining me, six months ago I started Spanish lessons at BEM idiomas, in Velez Malaga, with two goals, 1) the ability to speak fluent Spanish before my one-year-old, and 2) to have a conversation in Spanish with my 4-year-old without her saying, “Mum don’t you know anything?”, or “No Mum, not like that, say it like this.” This month I feel much happier with my progress, like I have stepped up a gear and on to the next level. Not the fastest learner in the world and not having enough personal time to study Spanish at home, I can only practice in my lessons. This means that it will take longer than I first anticipated, but my tutor Sandra is a very patient lady and has recognised that I’m ready for the next level. I was chuffed to bits when she said we were going to move on to the past tense,

but at the same time a little worried too, as I had only just cracked the present tense. My lessons are completely different now to when I first started at BEM idiomas. Sandra talks in Spanish pretty much all the time and mostly I understand everything, including a lot of what she writes. I have approximately one more year until my little one will be talking properly, so for me its practice, practice, practice! Don’t forget there’s still time for you to sign up for some Spanish lessons over the summer period. BEM idiomas are offering ‘Summer Intensive Courses’ with special prices throughout July and August. A 20 hour course lasts two or four weeks depending on your time schedule and is just 80 euros - usual price 120 euros. They are even offering ‘Family Courses’. de Cotta Law Buying “off plan”. By Myles G. Jackson, Barrister-at-Law, De Cotta McKenna y Santafé Purchasing a house is probably the most important investment you can make. In Spain, it is relatively common to buy property direct from the developer by making deposit payments whilst your house is being built. This is known as 'buying off-plan'. Indeed, off-plans have been the motor driving Spain's property boom. It oiled developers' cash-flow and enabled purchasers to buy property for less than its value upon completion. Similarly, offplans allow one to chip away 25-30% of the purchase price, meaning a lower mortgage. However, purchasers ought to be aware that buying off-plan isn't wholly risk-free. Under Spanish Law, off-plan developers must ensure that all deposit monies are guaranteed by a bank or recognised body. Accordingly, all off-plan Contracts of Sale-Purchase state all deposit monies are to be paid into a dedicated account as held by the developer and all such monies are to be guaranteed. Typically, the Contract also states that the developer will hand the guarantee to the purchaser within 21 days of signing. However, given banks charge developers for the guarantee, developers occasionally 'forget' to pay the bank, meaning the guarantee is never issued. Mr. Purchaser, buying without a lawyer, doesn't realise what's happened or not happened. In such circumstances, should

the developer be declared bankrupt, the deposit monies are lost and the purchaser bereft of effective recourse. Even if you are handed it upon signing the contract, things still can become a bit pear-shaped. Why? Because 99 times out of a 100, off-plan purchases entail an initial deposit of, say, 10,000€ payable upon signing and eighteen monthly payments of, say, 1,000€ thereafter. And 99 times out of a 100, the guarantee handed to you upon signing will only cover the first payment i.e. 10,000€. Each of the 18 subsequent payments requires separate guarantees. Accordingly, were the developer to 'forget' the additional guarantees, although your initial 10,000€ might be ring-fenced, the same cannot be said of the 18,000€. You or your lawyer should insist that original bank guarantees for all deposit monies are handed over when signing the contract. If they are not available, it doesn't necessarily mean that they won't become available, it just means that your money won't be safeguarded until they do – sometimes making for a very stressful and distant mañana. I’m naturally business-minded and I’m always working on about a gazillion new projects, or maintaining existing ones. However, I began to realise that a large proportion of these tasks were no longer serving me. I needed some guidance and quick! Glenne then presented me with her personally designed Goddess Guide Cards, which is a powerful tool to give people insight heightening their awareness of and sharpening their intuition about what's going on in their lives and what they need to change. I closed my eyes and concentrated on choosing two cards randomly, which transpired to be the Sky Goddess and the Goddess of Thought. On the back of each card there was some inspirational messages. Tiptop treats are in store for all the family at Race4Life, on Sunday July 19th. With just a few weeks to go until the big day the organisation is almost complete. All you need to do is pick up your walking shoes, put a few euros in your pocket and come and join us for what will be a fabulous day out in Cómpeta. The event has been created and co-organised by Debi Bond of Cómpeta. And following last year's hugely successful day, once again all the profits raised will be going to Cudeca cancer hospice. This year's Race4Life is especially poignant for Debi as the whole day will be in memory of her stepfather, and all those who have lost their lives to cancer during the last year. The big event kicks off at 11am with an Open Air Market in the newly renovated Paseo de las Tradiciones, alongside the church in the main Almirjara Plaza, Cómpeta. Stalls will include books and ceramics, jams and cakes, hats and footballs, clothes and jewellery, wine and breads, plus much more. Around 2.30pm everyone is invited to gather outside the cemetery in Avenida de Torrox, for the official unveiling of the Race4Life Statue by the Alcalde of Cómpeta José Luis Torres Gutiérrez, accompanied by the accomplished local artist Moira Schepel. This unique piece of artwork was commissioned last year and will be the focal point of this year's event. "The statue will be a lasting tribute to mark the achievements of everyone who took part last year, and as a fitting memorial to loved ones who are no longer with us," explained Debi. The final part of the 2km walk culminates at the Alberdini around 3pm, a local Rural Hotel where proprietors Inez 82

and Rob will welcome everyone taking part....and it’s there the fun really starts. There’s a kids cocktail bar and disco, treasure hunt with prize, face painting and bouncy castle. And for the adults, a well deserved welcome drink and the chance to watch, and be entertained by, a lively group of local ladies cooking a giant paella. Man or woman A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. 'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.' A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?' Beat the Crunch Recession Proof Investments With the economy diving further into the red many investors are worried about their current investments and are wondering where to place their trust and their money. Land had long been considered a safe haven but with the recent boom the comparable returns with other investments meant it had become unfashionable. However those days of extravagant city bonuses and novice property developers becoming paper millionaires are consigned to the history books. We recently asked Christian Műller, director of Landmark Developments what he considered to be the most recession proof asset class. Not surprisingly he suggests land but this is not a plug for his land investment company, moreover his reasoning is based on sound economic principles. “It is a cliché but they really don’t build it any more! However I would not suggest that every investor buys up tracts of land

in the hope it will increase in value. You have to be sure that there is serious development potential.” Műller set up this company in 2006 but it was his lifetime’s expertise in global developments that led him to his first project in the UK. “I had never considered the UK before as it was a developed market with less potential for profit but it soon became clear that there was a major difference between demand and supply, especially in the South of England. Some of this was due to over pricing but there were genuine opportunities if suitable locations could be found.” After many months of research a strategic site was acquired between Southampton and Portsmouth in a town called Fareham. The site was acquired from the Highways Agency and due to its development potential an overage clause meant the Government would be entitled to a percentage of the profits when planning permission was granted.

In fact our research has proven to be accurate as the local council in February 2008 proposed 3 potential areas for development and I am happy to say that our site was within one of these.” The fact that the site has development all around and a golf course to the North means it is ideally suited as a natural path for the local community’s growth. Fareham needs to find room for 13,720 homes in the next 20 years which equates to 686 new homes each year. This site could accommodate approximately 100 new homes on a conservative estimation. Developments of this size are not uncommon within Fareham. There may well be a case for housing targets to be met but with builders in complete disarray how many firms could be in a position to build such a project? Műller is fully aware of the dangers faced

by the building trade. “This is a serious issue but despite the doom and gloom these targets need to be reached and the government have put into place initiatives to help builders. At the end of the day demand for housing remains high, especially in this area. The council are in the process of appraising and allocating a number of local sites and with the pound as weak as it the potential for profit is even greater” Despite the uncertainty surrounding the global economy one factor remains constant and that is further development of Fareham is inevitable and with prices starting at £3500 this vehicle should prove to be accessible to most. aguaszago Imagine having to shower, wash dishes and prepare food using nothing but bottled water! Well, according to the ‘experts’ that’s one of the most obvious solutions to preventing bacterial contamination from local water supplies. But it may not be the most effective, when you study the truth. Bottled water is sold to us with the idea that it is underground spring water filtered through volcanic rock to create water full of healthy minerals. However, in reality bottled water is taken from the ground supplies, pumped into large bottling factories before being filtered and treated with UV sterilizing units; exactly the same system that we supply and install! Such chemicals, known as "endocrine disruptors," have the potential to interfere with estrogen and other reproductive hormones in the human body. However, the authors of the study say more research is required to determine whether, or to what degree, this poses an actual health risk to humans. I think you’ll agree that Aguazago is surely the way to go! Their units can be supplied and installed for as little as 700€ depending on a site survey. This is a small cost to pay when considering the cost of bottled water and its negative impact on the environment. And then there’s the health implications….!

Our fourth anniversary party was a huge success, the food was absolutely fantastic, beautifully prepared, as usual by Angela Dent and so tasty! Every year she excels herself, we are always so pleased to have the opportunity to show off her skills.

I have finally found inner peace by following the simple advice I heard on a Medical TV show.

At our party we launched our loyalty card which gives our customers the chance to save some money on their shopping bill, we do try to give something back. Every year new friendships seem to form at the party and this year was no exception, we can never beat last year though when two relatives met up, one on holiday from Australia â&#x20AC;&#x201C; without knowing that her Cousin actually lived in the area, (what are the chances of that happening?). We had around 200 customers throughout the afternoon and a good time was had by all, some just popping in for a quick hello, whilst others stayed the course and managed the whole affair. We would like to thank all those customers who attended old and new. We are getting some extremely interesting new items in our Card and Gift shop, and at extremely good prices, why not call round and see them for yourself.
