From the Ed..

I’ve just returned from a 12 day trip to the UK, home for 23 years of my life. Normally when I return from London I feel totally downtrodden. And it’s no wonder. There’s the cold, the wind, the greyness, the stress, the yobs, plus the fact that I usually catch a nasty bug on EasyJet from the serial sneezer sitting next to me. This time, however, I loved my break. And there was one thing which made all the difference. Seminars! Now, there’s something about that word which immediately raises the words “boring” and “dull” to mind. Nevertheless, I prefer to see seminars as opportunities to learn, grow and network with like-minded people. The first seminar I attended was called The Ultimate Marketing Seminar, a Christopher Howard event, located in London. Held over three days, the world’s top ten internet marketers gathered under one roof to divulge the secrets of their trade, and all for FREE. Amongst them was the number one Ebay seller in the world who has made millions from selling billiards tables, cashing in hugely on the deliberate misspelling of the word ‘billiards’. I learnt plenty more cool ideas and tried and tested formulas too, all of which I may be good enough to share with you over the months ahead. For example, there was the guy who made millions selling property guide ebooks online. Most of the countries he wrote about he has never even stepped foot in! Is that impressive, or what?! Seminar two was more like a minicourse, about coaching. I spent two days learning the ropes, so that I can help other people improve their lives via asking them the right questions.

Please mention The Sentinella when replying to adverts Lastly, I spent one day at a Writing and Publishing Conference in Kingston, which was fantastic timing as I’m just about ready to send my latest novel, The Path, to a collection of publishers and agents. The information I learnt there was absolutely priceless and I’m now confident about how to write an irresistible synopsis and introduction letter. Aside from all the seminars I met untold friends, visited my ninety-five-year-old Nan and spent time sunbathing (yes, really!) Now that I’m back in Spain, and all the tourists have cleared off, it seems a bit dead in contrast to London. So I’m already planning my next trip back.

strange News

Scientists discover lost world Scientists have found a lost world of undiscovered animals including fanged frogs and giant rats the size of cats. A BBC expedition explored the crater of a pristine giant extinct volcano located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea to film Lost Land of the Volcano. Accompanied by the first biologists ever to set foot in the crater, the team filmed strange spiders, giant caterpillars and tree-living kangaroos.. The kilometre-deep crater of Mount Bosavi has been virtually untouched since the volcano erupted 200,000 years ago. They discovered up to 40 new species, including 16 species of frog, one species of gecko, at least three new species of fish, 20 species of insect and spider and one new species of bat. Tall Turk

Half of Brits injured by biscuits More than half of all Britons have been injured by biscuits, according to a new survey. An estimated 25 million adults have been injured while eating during a tea or coffee break - with at least 500 landing themselves in hospital. The survey found that almost a third of adults had been splashed or scalded by hot drinks while dunking or trying to fish out the remnants of a collapsed digestive. It also revealed 28 per cent had choked on crumbs while one in 10 had broken a tooth or filling biting a biscuit.Three per cent had poked themselves in the eye with a biscuit and seven per cent bitten by a pet or "other wild animal" trying to get their biscuit. The custard cream was found to be the worst offender. 4

A Turk has been officially recognised as the world's tallest man by Guinness World Records, after measuring in at 8ft 1in. Sultan Kosen, 26, also has the largest hands, with a 10.8in span, and longest feet at 14.3in. Mr Kosen had applied for recognition as the tallest man in Turkey but was discovered to be 4ins taller than the world record holder.. The gentle giant grew normally until he was ten but then a tumour caused him to develop a medical condition called pituitary gigantism. The tumour was removed last year and his growth stopped. He added: "The good thing about being so tall is that I can see people from a long distance. The other thing is at home they use my height to change the light bulbs and hang the curtains, things like that."

know the symptons Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests:

member what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: *the car isn't washed *the bills aren't paid *there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter *the flowers don't have enough water, *there is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book, *I can't find the remote, *I can't find my glasses, *and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I'm really tired.

I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I walk towards the garage, I notice post on the porch table that I brought up from the postbox earlier.. I decide to go through the post before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk post in the bin under the table, and notice that the bin is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the rubbish first. But then I think, since I'm going to be I realise this is a serious problem, and I'll near the postbox when I take out the try to get some help for it, but first I'll rubbish anyway, I may as well pay the check my e-mail..... bills first. I take my cheque book off the table, and Don't laugh - if this isn't you yet, your see that there is only one cheque left. day is coming!! My extra cheques are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking. I'm going to look for my cheques, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. The Coke is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head towards the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need water. I put the Coke on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realise that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be (Monday to Friday) looking for the remote, but I won't reOpen every day member that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it 12.00 - 16.00 belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. 18.30 - 24.00 I pour some water in the flowers, but Avda. Men & women The differences... Men are just happier people. What do you expect from such simple creatures? Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another petrol station toilet because this one is just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. The occasional well-rendered belch is practically expected. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day holiday requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is €4.95 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its originalcolour. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes one colour for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can 'do' your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a moustache. You can do Christmas shopping for twenty five relatives on 24th December in twenty five minutes. NICKNAMES If Laura, Kate and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Laura, 8

Kate and Sarah. If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Godzilla and Four-eyes. EATING OUT When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in €20, even though it's only for €32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators. BATHROOMS A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel from M&S. The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items. ARGUMENTS A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument. FUTURE A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. SUCCESS A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man. MARRIAGE A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, but she does. DRESSING UP A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the bins, answer the phone, read a book, and get the post. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. NATURAL Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Any married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing.

simple home remedies These are amazingly simple home remedies. Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink.

If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you'll be afraid to cough. You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD -40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

Daily Thought: Some people are like Slinkies, not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

Male or Female

Old age!

You might not have known this, but a lot of non-living objects are actually either male or female. Here are some examples:

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting.

FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them. PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can also wreak havoc if you push the wrong Buttons.

Well, for example, the other day my wife and I went into town and went into a shop. We were only in there for about 5 minutes. When we came out, there was a copper writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and said, 'Come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?'

TYRES: Tyres are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated. HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under their bottom. SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft, squeezable and retain water.. (ain't that the truth). WEB PAGES: Female, because they're constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit on. TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the same old lines for picking up people. EGG TIMERS: Egg timers are female because, over time, all the weight shifts to the bottom. HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years, they've hardly changed at all, and are occasionally handy to have around.

He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him a Nazi turd. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tyres. So my wife called him a s***head. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windscreen with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutesThe more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. Personally, we didn't care. We came into town by bus. We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age.

THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably thought it would be male, but consider this: It easily gives a man pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know which butemail: info@thesentinella.com tons to push, he just keeps trying. 10 www.thesentinella.com

the stronger sex?! Why women are crabby We started to 'bud' in our blouses at 9 or 10 years old only to find that anything that came in contact with those tender, blooming buds hurt so bad it brought us to tears. So came the ridiculously uncomfortable training bra contraption that the boys in school would snap until we had calluses on our backs. Next, we get our periods in our early to mid-teens (or sooner). Along with those budding boobs, we bloated, we cramped, we got the hormone crankies, had to wear little mattresses between our legs or insert tubular, packed cotton rods in places we didn't even know we had. Our next little rite of passage was having sex for the first time which was about as much fun as having a ramrod push your uterus through your nostrils (IF he did it right and didn't end up with his little cart before his horse), leaving us to wonder what all the fuss was about. Then it was off to Motherhood where we learned to live on dry crackers and water for a few months so we didn't spend the entire day leaning over Brother John. Of course, amazing creatures that we are (and we are), we learned to live with the growing little angels inside us steadily kicking our innards night and day making us wonder if we were preparing to have Rosemary's Baby. Our once flat bellies looked like we swallowed a whole watermelon and we pee'd our pants every time we sneezed. When the big moment arrived, the dam in our blessed Nether Regions invariably burst right in the middle of the shopping centre

and we had to waddle, with our big cartoon feet, moaning in pain all the way to A&E. Then it was huff and puff and beg to die while the Nurse says, 'Please stop screaming, Mrs. Hearmeroar .. Calm down and push. 'Just one more good push' (more like 10), warranting a strong, well-deserved impulse to punch the %$#*@*#!* hubby and doctor square in the nose for making us cram a wiggling, mushroom-headed 10 pound bowling ball through a keyhole. After that, it was time to raise those angels only to find that when all that 'cute' wears off, the beautiful little darlings morphed into walking, jabbering, wet, gooey, snotblowing, life-sucking little poop machines. Then come their 'Teen Years.' When the kids are almost grown, we women hit our voracious sexual prime in our early 40's - while hubby had his somewhere around his 18th birthday. So we progress into the grand finale: 'The Menopause', the Grandmother of all womanhood. It's either take HRT and chance cancer in those now seasoned 'buds' or the aforementioned Nether Regions, or, sweat like a hog in July, wash your sheets and pillowcases daily and bite the head off anything that moves. Now, you ask WHY women seem to be more spiteful than men, when men get off so easy, INCLUDING the icing on life's cake: Being able to pee in the woods without soaking their socks... So, while I love being a woman, 'Womanhood' would make the Great Gandhi a tad crabby. You think women are the 'weaker sex'? Yeah right.

spanish Foods As a lover of the alphabet and feeling sad having devoured the last of the cocktails in September, now we begin a brand new list. Here we gobble up the A’s of Spanish food and drinks!

Almendras (Almonds) – These grow on trees in the mountains and are sometimes dished up as a dessert, saturated in sticky honey.

Atun (Tuna) – Highly healthy and really succulent when served in olive oil, together with a green salad.

Anchovies (Anchovies) – These little fishes arent my fave foodstuff in Spain. I’m one of those who often asks the camerero ‘sin anchovies por favor’.

Ali Oli (Garlic Sauce) – If you’ve ever bought a jacket potato from one of the kiosks, then no doubt you’ve eaten ali oli. Just remember your mints after!

Agua (Water) – Lately I just can’t stop guzzling it, which is ok seeing as health experts recommend downing at least 1.5 litres a day.

Arroz (Rice) – The Spanish are crazy on their arroz, especially on Sundays when they cook giant paellas for the whole family, and some…

Aceitunas (Olives) – Find them in the supermarket stuffed with my enemy anchovies, red peppers, jamon serrano, or if you prefer them hot, jalapeno peppers

Albondigas (Meatballs) – A tasty tapas, served in either tomato, or almond sauce. Eat them with breadsticks and a glass of vino tinto.

Aceite (Olive Oil) – Spain is famous for its aceite, and it’s a staple part of the Mediterranean diet. Better to eat it cold, drizzled over salads, than to heat it for frying.

De Cotta Law Making A Personal Injury Claim In Spain By Myles Jackson is a Barrister-at-Law De Cotta McKenna y Santafé If you have the misfortune to have an accident of any kind here in Spain you may well have grounds for a personal injury claim. Prospects of being successful depend upon a multitude of factors - the evidence available, whether liability is accepted or can be readily established and whether parties are insured, be it under public liability, travel or even your own home insurance policy. A successful claim needs to establish first, liability. For example, because Mr. Waiter didn’t pick up the banana skin, you slipped and broke your ankle and second, quantum or rather compensation i.e. as a ballerina, your broken ankle has caused you £50,000 loss - kerching… 0Occasionally, the defendant, say Mr. Waiter's employer, will agree that he is liable (or at fault) meaning the only issue to decide or agree is quantum i.e. how much. To assess your claim's worth, you'll need a medical report detailing your injuries and a prognosis along the lines of - fracture of lower tibia and fibula, shattered calcaneus (heel bone to the uninitiated), 100% immediate reduction in motor skills, foreseeable 60% improvement over 5 years and 70% increased risk of arthritis within 10 years. If Mr. Employer disputes liability, matters will proceed to court where a judge will determine liability before addressing quantum. Quite often compensation awards are reduced due to one being partly to blame for one's accident. For example, surreptiously you smuggled the banana into the restaurant, threw the 22

skin on the floor, deliberately kicked it out of Mr. Waiter's sight, had one glass too many before slipping on the skin when heading for the door without paying. Amongst other things, this is what is known as contributory negligence – that is to say, you contributed to your own misfortune. There are two types of compensation awards - general damages and special damages. General damages are awarded for pain, suffering and loss of amenity i.e. that which is not capable of precise calculation. Special damages are losses that can be calculated precisely. For example, loss of earnings, number of days in hospital, medical expenses, cost of an orthopaedic inner sole for the foot as attached to the broken ankle etc.. If you happen to have an accident, you should contact a reputable lawyer to guide you throughout the claim; keep all original receipts for medication, taxis, flights etc.; write down the names and contact details of any witnesses; collate all relevant documentation, including taking photographs of the scene and; keep a diary of how your injuries affect your daily life. It is rare for personal injury claims to settle quickly and even rarer for court cases to finish quickly. Having said that, once your lawyer has issued the claim upon your behalf, he will do all the subsequent legwork and, if successful, all you have to do is put your foot up either at home or back home, and await your cheque before your knees up! If you wish more information on this particular topic or would like to discuss any matter raised therein, contact Myles Jackson or Reyes Gomez Llorente, De Cotta McKenna y Santafe, on 952 527 014. solutions 4 U

Solutions 4 U is an Estate Agent, which also offers services such as Project Management for Quality Construction and Translation. It also boasts a Legal Advisor on property matters working with an independent Lawyer who specialises in this field. The owner, Julie Wilkins, has lived in this area of Spain since 1991, so her experience of the Axarquia region is vast. According to Julie there are still many properties with incorrect paperwork, including properties with no Deeds at all, parts of a property not on the Deed, incorrect Boundary Lines and incorrect details from Catastro (Land Registry in Malaga). All these items are included in the searches a purchaser's lawyer will make on the property.

24

“Any inconsistencies can often jeopardise a sale if they are not seen to quickly, as many buyers are very sensitive to what might be viewed as ‘illegal’ construction,” said Julie. “It’s very important to get these issues sorted out. And most people don’t even know what their Deed really says.” Solutions 4 U offer this service to all buyers or sellers, or those who simply want peace of mind and their papers checked out. Estimates and time scales of procedures are always given and the service is quick and professional. “In view of the fact that property sales are not so easy these days, don’t wait until you’ve got a buyer to get things put right,” concludes Julie. Operator: ‘What sort of trouble?? Caller: ‘Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away. Operator: ‘Went away? Caller: ‘They disappeared. Operator: ‘Hmm. So what does your screen look like now? Caller: ‘Nothing.’ Operator: ‘Nothing??’ Caller: ‘It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type.’ Operator: ‘Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out??’ Caller: ‘How do I tell?’ Operator: ‘Can you see the C: prompt on the screen??’ Caller: ‘What's a sea-prompt?’ Operator: ‘Never mind, can you move your cursor around the screen?" Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on??’ Caller: ‘I don't know.’

Operator: ‘Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power lead goes into it. Can you see that??’ Caller: ‘Yes, I think so.’ Operator: ‘Great. Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall.’ Caller: ‘Yes, it is.’ Operator: ‘When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one??’ Caller: ‘No.’ Operator: ‘Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable.’ Caller: ‘Okay, here it is.’ Operator: ‘Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer.’ Caller: ‘I can't reach.’ Operator: ‘Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is??’ Caller: ‘No.’ Operator: ‘Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over??’ Caller: ‘Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle - it's because it's dark.’ Operator: ‘Dark??’ Caller: ‘Yes - the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window.’ Operator: ‘Well, turn on the office light then.’ Caller: ‘I can't.’ Operator: ‘No? Why not??’ Caller: ‘Because there's a power failure.’ Operator: ‘A power................. A power failure? Aha, Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in??’ Caller: ‘Well, yes, I keep them in the closet.’ Operator: ‘Good. Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from.’ Caller: ‘Really? Is it that bad?’ Operator: ‘Yes, I'm afraid it is.’ Caller: ‘Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them??’ Operator: ‘Tell them you're too f***king stupid to own a computer!!!!!’

random Jokes All the organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who was the one in charge 'I should be in charge,' said the brain, 'Because I run all the body's systems, so without me nothing would happen.' 'I should be in charge,' said the blood ’because I circulate oxygen all over so without me you'd all waste away.' 'I should be in charge,' said the stomach, 'because I process food and give all of you energy.' 'I should be in charge,' said the legs, 'because I carry the body wherever it needs to go.' 'I should be in charge,' said the eyes, 'Because I allow the body to see where it goes.' 'I should be in charge,' said the rectum, 'Because I'm responsible for waste removal.' All the other body parts laughed at the rectum and insulted him, so in a huff, he shut down tight. Within a few days: *the brain had a terrible headache *the stomach was bloated *the legs got wobbly *the eyes got watery *and the blood was toxic. *they all decided that the rectum should be the boss. The Moral of the story? The a***hole is usually the one in charge! ----------------------------------------------------Last night, my friend and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her, 'I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug.' She got up, unplugged the Computer, and threw out my wine. She's such a bitch. 26

Perfect alarm! Protect your home and family. How would you feel? Men, how would you feel if the woman in this true story was your wife, girlfriend or mother? Think twice and ask yourself how you would feel! Jane was angry, afraid, felt violated and sick at heart, after the silverware set given to her parents for their wedding was stolen in a burglary. “My mum and dad are both dead now and it was sentimental to me,“ said Jane. “When I saw it, I always thought of them.” “I also felt totally violated when I discovered my personal intimate items and other clothing I felt had been touched. In some ways I felt as if I had been raped”, said Jane. Jane is one of thousands of burglary victims who hate the thought of strangers combing through their private and personal belongings. “I felt violated, sad and angry, why me!? I haven’t done anything” she said. People feel a wide range of emotions when their homes have been burgled. They may feel mad, violated, outraged, vulnerable, angry or unsafe. They might feel sad when an irreplaceable object is stolen or broken. These are all very normal reactions and most victims feel that it will happen again. The best thing to do is make the burglar think you are home and put in a “Perfect Alarm System”. Company Profile ¡PERFECT Alarm! S.L.: Caleta de Velez ¡PERFECT Alarm! S.L. torrox Costa You may find me a little biased about Torrox Costa, as I live just up the road from there, in that little sleepy village called El Morche, but I’m not fibbing when I say that Torrox Costa is a great place for the beach, shopping, dining, sunbathing and bevies! The coastal area stretches for 3 kms and woven between the the lot is the Paseo Maritimo a flat pedestrianised promenade, beginning at El Faro (the lighthouse) and running along the entire length of the beach, Playa Ferrara. Most of the town’s shops, bars and restaurants are situated along the Paseo Maritimo, or among the apartment buildings that worm back to the main coast road. Mondays in Torrox Costa are market day and there are bargains aplenty on offer from the various stalls. You can pick up your fruit and veg for the week, ceramics, clothes, towels and much more. The main beach at Torrox Costa is Playa Ferrara, however other quieter and less crowded beaches in the area are Playa Peñoncillo and Playa Las Lindas. To the east of the main town, alongside the lighthouse, the new 'Balcon de Torrox' has been constructed as a lookout to the sea and headlands and with transparent flooring looking down on Roman remains. On the last Sunday before Christmas each year, Torrox holds its annual Migas Fiesta. Migas is a traditional dish for harvest workers, with a

base of corn flour, olive oil, water and garlic. More than 40,000 visitors attend the fiesta and each of them get to try migas, which is cooked in large frying pans throughout the town. All this while music and dance performances take place in the main square. If you’re looking to buy a property in Torrox Costa, pop in to Guido Bauer, Property Supermarket Spain, or Philipp Gerald. For dining the choice is vast, but fine eateries at the top of your list should include The Light of India, Café/Bar Nautica, Intermezzo, Restaurante Javi, Bella Sicilia, for pizzas, and when traditional British cuisine takes your fancy, Lews Fish & Chips. If you're after beauty treatments or pampering pay a visit to the salon of Rebecca Curtis, and if you need medical advice/treatment, Simple Care is there to help. For mobility equipment pop in to Blue Badge Mobility for a range of wheelchairs, scooters and stair lifts. See. Torrox Costa has everything you could possibly want, and more! Does your laptop get hot? Does it switch off for no apparent reason? Does it run too slow? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then you probably need to cool it down with a Notebook Cool Pad. Your laptop simply sits on top and the three coloured fans keep it cool all the time it's switched on. It's Plug and Play and simply plugs into any USB port. It takes the power from the laptop, so it is as portable as you want and it's super quiet. You don't realise it's protecting your laptop and most importantly, your work, because if it turns off unexpectedly, you will lose it. You spend hundreds of euros on your laptop, so protect it now before it's too late. At just 15€ it's a must-have investment! See the Notebook Cool Pad working at the Farmers' markets, at Trapiche on Tuesdays, and Puente don Manuel on Fridays.

lied Hedgehog or Four-toed Hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) and the North African Hedgehog (A. algirus).

uThey

hogs has seen a considerable increase in the last few years due to their apparently innocent and playful looks. Hedgehogs are difficult to maintain as pets due to their low resistance to climate and temperature changes, and their inability to adapt to enclosed environments.

live from three to four years in the wild, but as pets hedgehogs can live for ten years. They cannot see very well, but have good ears and a great sense of smell.

uHedgehogs

are awake at night (nocturnal) and are generally found curling up during the day under matted grass or in leaf piles, rocky places or holes in the ground. They may roll up into a tight ball when they hear an unfamiliar sound or movement.

uHedgehogs

display an unusual act when meeting an unfamiliar substance for the first time. They will lick the unfamiliar object repeatedly until a thick saliva forms in their mouth. They will then rub the excess saliva onto their skin and spines.

uTheir natural diet includes insects, slugs, snails, worms and, occasionally, small vertebrates and fruit. They sometimes kill and eat snakes.

uIn

2006, McDonald's changed the design of their McFlurry containers to be more hedgehog-friendly. Previously, hedgehogs would get their heads stuck in the container as they tried to lick the remaining food from inside the cup. Then, being unable to get out, they would starve to death.

uHedgehogs are a powerful form of pest control. A single hedgehog can keep an average garden free of pests by eating up to 200 grams of insects each night. It is common throughout the United Kingdom to see people attempting to lure hedgehogs into their gardens with treats and hedgehog-sized holes in their fences.

uThe

name 'hedgehog' came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English 'heyghoge', from 'heyg', 'hegge' = hedge, because it frequents hedgerows, and 'hoge', 'hogge' = hog, from its piglike snout. uHedgehogs

are fairly vocal, and communicate not only in a series of grunts and snuffles, but sometimes in loud squeals (depending on species).

the Facecloth

Eye welded to share'oscope, what does it see this month?!

There isn’t a woman alive today who won't have a giggle over this!

Firstly, the up-to-date stats (at time of going to print) for previous picks: Sepura bought for 32p now 51p Huntsworth bought for 32p now 82p Ferrexpo bought for 70p now 159p Northgate bought for 80p now 29p ex rights Trinity Mirror bought for 45p now 159p Bank of Ireland bought for 91p now 294p BATM bought for 39p now 47p Northern Foods bought for 64p now 72p. This month's share is DS Smith and 1030 have been purchased at 97p each. Mr Stockmarket says: "DS Smith is an international packaging company and the UK's leading producer of recycled paper board and manufacturer of corrugated packaging." Will you take his advice, based on his healthy track record?!

I was due for a cancer smear with the doctor later in the week. Early one morning, I received a call from the doctor's office to tell me that I had been rescheduled for that morning at 9:30am. I had only just packed everyone off to work and school, and it was already around 8:45am. The trip to his office took about 35 minutes, so I didn't have any time to spare. As most women do, I like to take a little extra effort over hygiene when making such visits, but this time I wasn't going to be able to make the full effort. So, I rushed upstairs, threw off my pyjamas, wet the facecloth that was sitting next to the sink, and gave myself a quick wash in that area to make sure I was at least presentable. I threw the facecloth in the clothes basket, donned some clothes, hopped in the car and raced to my appointment. I was in the waiting room for only a few minutes when I was called in. Knowing the procedure, as I'm sure you do, I hopped up on the table, looked over at the other side of the room and pretended that I was in Paris or some other place a million miles away. I was a little surprised when the doctor said, 'My, we have made an extra effort this morning, haven't we?' I didn't respond. After the appointment, I heaved a sigh of relief and went home. The rest of the day was normal - some shopping, cleaning, & cooking. After school when my 7 year old daughter was playing, she called out from the bathroom, 'Mummy, where's my facecloth?' I told her to get another one from the cupboard. She replied, 'No, I need the one that was here by the sink, it had all my glitter saved inside it.'

Law of attraction By Lara Demkes, Law of Attraction Coach Everything in this universe runs under universal laws. You are already aware of some of these laws, for example the Law of Gravity, or the Law of Cause and Effect. Today there is a growing awareness about one of the lesser known universal laws, the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction is one of the most powerful laws in the universe. The simplest definition of this law is that you attract into your life whatever you give your attention, energy and focus to whether it’s positive or negative. That means you create your own reality and experiences. Have you ever noticed that sometimes what you need just falls into place? Or have you ever bumped into someone on the street just after you were thinking about them? This is all evidence of the Law of Attraction in your life. Similarly you hear of people that find themselves in unhappy relationships or situations over and over again. These too are examples of the Law of Attraction. Many people attract things into their lives by default, and because they are not conscience of what they are doing. This makes it difficult for them to change. When you become aware of the Law of Attraction you can learn to deliberately

attract more wealth, better health or your ideal partner. This is where I can help. Even as a child I knew the power of positive thinking, at school my friends would tease me and call me a witch because I had an uncanny way of “knowing” how things would turn out. In later years as I read more books I began to understand that I had been using the Law of Attraction without realising what I was doing. This prompted me to read and research everything I could on the subject. I wanted a better understanding of the process and principles so I could apply them with more deliberation. Since 2000, many articles and books have been written about the Law of Attraction, perhaps the most widely known was “The Secret” written by Rhonda Byrne in 2004. This has since been made into a DVD and translated into over 26 different languages. Lara is speaking at the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival, in Puerto Banus, on the 24th and 25th of October at 3pm. This takes place from midday to 9pm at the H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel, Ctra N340, Puerto Banus (behind the casino). To book Lara’s Law of Attraction course, call her on 647 057 698, email lara@lawofattraction.es or log on to www.lawofattraction.es

BEM idiomas

Each month I write an article, as a student at BEM idiomas in Velez Malaga. The goal of Viviane and her team tutors, is to teach their many students to become bi-lingual in the most effective way possible. The goal of Viviane and her team is to help people become fluent and as confident as possible. You might be wondering how I can write an article every month on having a Spanish lesson. Well, there really is so much to share and you don’t realise how much you can learn until you attend a lesson at BEM. I have never been a particularly fast learner, but I have surprised myself as I, like some of you, thought that I would never be able to string a sentence together, make myself understood, understand a reply, or actually speak back. WOW, a miracle! That’s what it felt like at the time, such a feeling of intense happiness inside. It really did make my week!

46

Sandra, my lovely tutor, keeps telling me I must learn more vocabulary, as that is what enables one to understand more, write more and increase confidence with speaking. I thought I knew a lot of words, but obviously not enough to allow me to progress. So I thought maybe a few sessions on vocabulary might help us all! A ghostly theme, very apt for October. Book review

I developed a routine in Almayate. They were happy days that revolved around my plants and painting, exploring for the former, seeking inspiration for the latter. I got up at around 9am and opened the bedroom shutters to see the sea, the sandy beach, palm trees, blue skies, and birds. The sun was usually so strong that I had to put my hand to my forehead. I could see my plants spread out before me like an oriental carpet. I would stand there for about half an hour, hoping to spot dolphins, but it only happened once or twice a year when they were on their migratory route. I would then go downstairs and make myself the first cuppa of the day in a large mug. Then I would prepare toast, cereal, fresh fruit including melon, mangoes, peaches, oranges – all of which I would put on a tray and bring up to the balcony, very slowly. Sitting there, I would sip my tea, nibble my breakfast and learn some new Spanish words. It seemed to me that I only had room for a certain amount of Spanish words in my brain. Any new ones I learned replaced the ones I already knew, which were quickly forgotten, but I carried on in hope. I would then pace about on the balcony, shouting a few ‘Buenos Dias’ to passing neighbours, take a shower, take my medicines and begin painting whatever was on the upstairs easel. Then at 1pm, I would prepare a quick lunch and glass of tinto, which I would enjoy on the

balcony before going to the café for coffee to meet locals for chitchat. Home then for siesta until 5pm, after which I would have anothershower, water the garden, drink tea while admiring the plants, then wander through the paddy fields to the beach to fish until about 9pm. I’d come home then and watch a little TV. Then if I were too tired to cook, I would wander to the bodega for steak, chips and tinto. If I met friends, I would perhaps stay there until 2 or 3am, then stagger home to bed. This was the usual pattern but some days I didn’t feel like doing anything. Other days I would drive into the mountains to take photographs of the local fauna and flora, eat some packed lunch, do some sketches, pop to the garden centre and go home, full of ideas. Then I would get my sketchpad and prepare for painting, sometimes until midnight, eating only sandwiches before bed. Occasionally I would get up, go to the café for a cheese roll and coffee and head for the beach. I’d take a chair, a beach mat, a bottle of water, some fresh fruit, bait from the freezer and a notebook and pen. Then I would spend the whole day, throwing the line into the water and dreaming writing, fishing, and bathing.

Children, don’t you just love em!!

Need a pampering?

A little boy was overheard praying, ‘Lord, if you can’t make me a better boy, don’t worry about it. I’m having a real good time like I am,’

It was mid month and I was feeling a little stressed, with The Sentinella deadline fast approaching. With summer disappearing before my eyes and winter approaching, my skin looked dry and it was in need of a small miracle. I called Mo at the Hotel Riu Ferrara, Torrox Costa, who suggested that her ‘Secret Anti-Age Facial’ would do the trick. On arriving at the Riu I was amazed how big and spectacular it was. Mo explained that they offer treatments to guests and non-residents all year round. Only the finest 100 per cent natural products are used in all facial and body treatments to maximise the results. Mo explained the 'Secret Anti-Age Facial’ was "a neuro cosmetic treatment using Endorphin activating products and facial reflexology with rose crystals, to improve the appearance of skin and give a light lifting effect." She said: "The aim of all our treatments is to stimulate the senses, reduce stress and enhance your vitality." Just what I needed! Mo’s salon was quaint and cosy and it smelt lovely. The relaxing music in the background was very calming. I knew straight away I was going to enjoy the experience. The pampering lasted 60 minutes and proved the most magnificent face mask that I have ever seen. The rose crystals offered a delightful cold sensation as they were massaged across my face. I had a brilliant glow for days. At the Hotel Rui Ferrara you can also enjoy Swedish Massage, Indian Head Masage, Hot Stone massage, Reflexology, Anti-Cellulite Body Wraps, Facials, Pedicures and Manicures. The internationally qualified and experienced team has been working together since March 2009 and has perfected a range of treatments to make clients feel wonderful. Visit them in the hotel, downstairs by the indoor pool. Why not explore what they have on offer and pamper yourself, or buy a voucher for someone else? I'm glad I did! See main advert on page 16

After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, ‘That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, I wanted to stay with you guys.’ A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, ‘And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?’ One bright little girl replied, ‘Because people are sleeping.’ A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. ‘If Jesus were sitting here, he would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’ Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, ‘Ryan, you be Jesus!’ A father was at the beach with his children when his four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand. ‘Daddy, what happened to him?’ the son asked. ‘He died and went to Heaven.’ the Dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, ‘Did God throw him back down?’

growing Old Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favourite fast food when you were growing up?' 'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him. 'All the food was slow.' 'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?' 'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained. ! 'Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.' By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it : My parents NEVER owned their own house, wore Levis (Don't think they existed in Lincolnshire), set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country (Well my Dad went to Iceland and France - as a soldier in WW2) or had a credit card (cos they didn't exist!) My parents never drove me to school. (We never had a car as neither ever learned to drive). I had a bicycle (second hand) that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 9 - for the Coronation. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at about 10pm, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 5pm with Children's Hour and then the BBC News. There was no locally produced news as there were no local TV stations, in fact there was only the BBC1 channel! I never had a telephone in my room. We never had a telephone! I paid for telephone installation in my parents' home when I was about 32 so they could phone for the doctor when they were ill and I could contact them from abroad 50

easily. That was about 1976! It had a dial that you had to turn for each number. Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was - early every morning, in glass bottles. I never saw a pizza until I was about 36! All newspapers were delivered by boys. They had to get up at 6am every morning. Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or anything offensive. Cinemas usually screened 2 films each sitting - a 'B' film (had minor actors and lasted about an hour) followed by 'Pathe Pictorial News'. There was then an interval of about 15 minutes when ladies would walk the aisles selling ice creams from a tray. The main 'A' film, featuring famous film stars, was them screened and lasted at least 90 minutes. If it was a 'full feature' film, there would be no B film and the interval/ice creams would come during the film itself. Throughout the showing, usherettes would walk the aisles and flash their torched to ensure there was no 'hankie-pankie'! One of our two cinemas has double seats in the back row! If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing. Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it? How many do you remember? *Head lights dimmer switches on the floor. *Ignition switches on the dashboard. *Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards. *Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner. *Using hand signals for cars without turn signals. *Gas lights in my grandmother's home and in the street outside my home

This year it seemed as if summer arrived overnight and it certainly appears to have left in the same way, much to the delight of all of the farmers in Benamargosa! For you gardeners we now have sacks of horse manure available ready for the autumn planting. The recent rains arrived at exactly the right time for the harvesting of mangoes. Fortunately the slopes of drying raisins were all carefully covered and protected so the villagers were able to continue snipping as normal once the sun returned. As with so many of these fruits, we tend to drive by them every day and take them for granted so I thought it would be quite nice to find out a little bit more from local growers about what it actually entails to be a mango farmer. Mangoes originated in south eastern Asia where they have grown for more than 4,000 years and they are now grown in more than 111 tropical and subtropical countries, the biggest producing country being India. Mangoes found their way to Africa during the 16th century and later, via Portuguese ships, to Brazil, where they were recorded by Captain Cook in 1768. Of the many varieties of mango it is the Osteen which is unique to the European continent. Originally from Florida, it is now grown in our own little subtropical coastal climate of the Axarquia between Malaga and Granada. Mangoes are very resistant to disease due to their thick stem and apart from the exceptionally low temperatures a few winters back, they are suited to this area. The frosts damaged the young shoots and twigs leaving many young trees for dead, some farmers losing whole hillsides of trees, although some were able to regraft on to the surviving stocks. Seventy nine per cent of the locally cultivated fruit

are Tommy Atkins, but with fierce competition from the South Americans, our local farmers are gradually turning over to the Osteen which has the added bonus of a thicker skin, thus giving it a longer shelf life. As with the lemons (we have Pepe’s ecological lemons available in the shop) it is important to check that you are buying locally produced fruit. Support our local farmers! Most of us are very lucky and have generous neighbours who keep us supplied with fresh produce so with four sacks of mangoes at my disposal I’ve bought a lot of vinegar and have been busy bottling chutney. With so much chutney to use up the logical step is to eat curry and so LA VAQUERIA CURRY NIGHT was born! Every second Thursday of each month we now serve home made curries, side dishes, breads and starters. Help yourself for just 7,20€ and bring your own booze! Guaranteed to be an affordable enjoyable evening. Meanwhile, with Christmas looming, I have ordered huge amounts of blank cards and cello bags at very competitive prices, not just for those of you who enjoy card making as a hobby for your friends and family, but for the more professional card maker with market stalls, etc, I think you’ll find it is worth a visit. Have a chat over a cuppa with a slice of cake, or stop for lunch whilst you browse and ponder the many new products on offer. Once again, many thanks to all of you lovely people who have visited this month, both regulars and new comers and a special thanks to Elaine, a local mango producer, for her invaluable advice on mango cultivation. they could have done with some TLC. The food and staff were once again really good. We had an afternoon drive and had a close encounter with some enormous elephants who walked right in

Part 3 Day three and now for what we really went for! We were up at 5.30am and off on safari. We travelled in a small minibus with just our friends and the driver to Tsavo East, about two hours from Mombasa, where we entered “the bush”. The roof of the van was raised so we could stand up for a better view of the animals and it wasn’t long before we saw zebras, giraffes, elephants and even a sleeping lion. Whenever an animal was spotted there was great excitement and lots of camera clicking, and we all soon caught the bug of “who can spot the next animal”. We drove until lunch time when we arrived at our first lodge, the Voi, which had the most fantastic views over the plains, and a large water hole where the animals came to drink. There was an abundance of monkeys running around us, especially in the dining room. They almost seemed tame, but we were told that they can be very vicious, so we kept

our distance. The rooms in the lodge were adequate for an overnight stay, but 76

front of our van. But the highlight of the day came when we spotted three lionesses lying on some rocks, eyeing up a herd of zebra, selecting one for their supper. We stopped beside them and we were snapping away excitedly, when my mobile phone rung. I couldn’t believe it and neither could the person on the other end when I told her I was in front of a lion in Kenya! We watched the lions stalking the zebras for a long time, taking their time crawling on their bellies and eventually splitting up so they surrounded the zebras. They seemed oblivious to the dozen or so vans that had appeared out of nowhere to watch them. Unfortunately (or not) for us, it was getting dark by this time, and the vans cannot be out in the bush at night, so we had to return to the lodge without seeing what happened next. When we counted up how many animals and birds we had seen on our first day, it came to an impressive twenty-one different species. Read part four next month….

Let’s Dance Five dance venues on the Costa del Sol LetsDanceRoc, the dance club that teaches ‘Modern Jive’ here on the coast, now teaches 150 people every week to look good on the dance floor. ‘Modern Jive’, also known by the brand name CEROC or the French word LeROC, is the dance phenomenon that has gone global in just 10 years, the UK alone now has over 400 ‘Modern Jive’ venues. LetsDanceRoc, our own Costa del Sol ‘Modern Jive’ dance club, has already grown to five venues and has 25 experienced instructors known as CREW. Every night of the week, for three hours, the LetsDanceRoc CREW teach people from all nationalities and ages ranging from 17 – 70 to look good on the dance floor. With the ‘Party Season’, which means Christmas and New Year’s parties, fast approaching; the LetsDanceRoc venues, which stretch from Torrox Costa to the east and Duquesa to the west, are teaching more people every week. Modern Jive is a fusion of Jiving and Salsa. Its worldwide popularity is because it is easy to learn and just four moves, which can be taught in one evening, look good when ‘looped’ into a dance routine and the fact that the same moves can be danced to slow romantic music as well as to good old fashion ‘Rock and Roll’.

The key to the club’s popularity is not just its success at teaching absolute, ‘two left footed’ beginners to look dead cool on any dance floor, but its ability to make every dance evening three hours of ‘real fun’. From the moment they walk through the door new members are immediately looked after by a CREW member. LetsDanceRoc evenings are extremely sociable. Half the members turn up with partners and half come on their own knowing that, because of the way the teaching is organised, they will dance with most people during the evening and soon know everyone there. The club is very proud of the amount of friendships and romances that have resulted from their dance classes and the number of people on the coast that now look good on the dance floor – confirmed by the new signs...

Confirmation of LetsDanceRoc’s success here on the coast. Read more on page 53

Dining at azafran Bill Hutton has written two books romantic comedies - or Chic-lit under the pen name of Holly Denham - which have now been translated into 8 different languages and are being compared to Bridget Jones Diary. He has moved to Spain, near Vinuela and is now involved in the opening of a new restaurant close by in Alcaucin (www.azoasisrestaurant.com) Below he shares some thoughts about being a Dad and his own childhood. I was nervous. I didn’t trust this new ‘specialist’ my parents had found. It was the summer of 1977 and things were about to take a turn for the worst. Looking back to those days of my childhood and being a relatively new father (she’s two in September) I realise now I

am about to find out what PAYBACK really means. I have no doubt that my little daughter already knows how to play me off against my wife. My wife is a full on – attention seeking performer – I don’t mean she’s ever been on the stage, I mean she just knows how to milk an audience and get exactly what she wants, BUT she is a novice compared to my nearly two-year-old. This leads me to be afraid. Oh yes. To put this neatly into context – I was such an attention seeker myself that I managed to convince a string of specialists, teachers and parents that I was deaf for a year, when I was eight. I managed to justify this in my head (and to my parents ever since) by saying I had an over active imagination, with no outlet, and now I get to write, I have one. This of course is absolute TOSH. I was just a little GIT. They thought I had begun to read lips a

a desperate attempt to understand people. My school was informed and I had the best in hearing aids and my friend's crisps. I would be stone deaf within the month, and that was that. So there I was at the end of this corridor in Harley Street (my parents had forked out a lot of money over that year) watching this lady specialist talk to my mum. All the other specialists had been men, not sure if this has anything to do with it, but she was different right from the outset – no headphones, no bleepy thing, no chance for me to sadly shake my head each time a loud buzzing noise nearly deafened me. The tears were actually real. It's difficult keeping your head still and your face straight when someone screams in your ear. The new woman just put me at the end of a long corridor, covered her lips with her hand and quietly said; ‘I wonder if the poor little cherub would like some ice-cream??” I screamed ‘YES PLEASE!” from the other end of the corridor…. AAAAAGGH caught! I imagine she was a mother and had this unnerving instinct for little gits like me. I had a lot of explaining to do and a lot of rather miffed friends wanting a years worth of sweets and crisps. If you like chic-lit, good food, or just want to know how to fake an illness; then do come and see me. I'll be standing on the beautiful flowered terrace overlooking Lake Vinuela of the Azafran Restaurant - yes that was a plug (evenings from Weds to Sunday) Bill - advert on back inside cover

sky Card News

random Joke

The great Sky changeover People keep asking me the same question: ‘What do I do, when my Sky card needs changing?’

A man was driving down the road and ran out of gas. Just at that moment, a bee flew in his window. The bee said, 'What seems to be the problem?' 'I'm out of gas,' the man replied. The bee told the man to wait right there and flew away. Minutes later, the man watched as an entire swarm of bees flew to his car and into his gas tank. After a few minutes, the bees flew out. 'Try it now,' said one bee. The man turned the ignition key and the car started right up. 'Wow!' the man exclaimed, 'what did you put in my gas tank'? The bee answered, BP.

Over the next ten months or so, most blue cards in Sky Digital Boxes will need to be exchanged for white cards. For those with a card registered at a UK address, the new card will automatically arrive in the post at that address. If your card has been issued under a locally administered contract here in Spain you will need to contact the original local provider, who should then obtain the new card for you. For those who have cards without an address, at some point a message will appear on your television screen saying, ‘insert your new Sky Viewing Card. At this time you will also lose some channels from the main menu. What can you do next? Contact a Sky installer who will then provide you a new card, as and when they become available. As an alternative why not take the opportunity to change your receiver for a new High Definition FreeSat Digital Receiver? This will not only give you a High Definition picture for free but also means NO CARD, NO SUBSCRIPTION and NO CONTRACT. This means there is no need to worry about this card changeover or any future card changes that may occur. For more information on the changeover, go to channel 998 on your Sky remote handset. This will explain what to do with your new card when it arrives. Article submitted by Sat.Co Tel: 657 484 853 See advert on page 42

Need a Dentist? As a semi retired British dentist practising in Spain I feel no obligation to respect professional “omerta”. So I have no qualms in telling patients exactly how it is. As the press has exposed, some NHS dentists are earning 300k p.a. Hence, I am often asked “what are you doing here?” We all know quality of life has no price and it doesn’t cost much to live, but it costs a lot to discover that for ourselves. As they are paid by piecework those dentists must be moving at a greater rate of knots than the racehorses that whisked me around the racetracks of the UK. In my former life as a jockey I was christened Dr. Death; only because of my riding tactics I hasten to add. I would be a bit concerned about anyone who liked going to the dentist, but trusting your dentist to use his skill and training to help you maintain a healthy mouth is a necessity. Is it wishful thinking that your dentist diagnoses problems and recommends a treatment plan, unmotivated by money? I am see-

ing many Brits here who have conscientiously been going for their scale and polish in the UK, mainly on the NHS. I don’t think it necessary to visit the dentist in such a way. Going only when you are in pain is also dumb.A brush whizzing around on a drill is almost useless, especially as I have yet to find anyone who knows how to brush correctly, and almost everyone has varying degrees of gum disease. This varies from occasional bleeding gums to chronic infection and receding gums. What amazes me is that generally these patients tell me that no dentist has paid much attention to this before. They just let him get on with it. It’s almost as if they have gone for a meeting with the pope and they know their place. Extensive treatments including implants, crowns and bridges are much cheaper here than the UK so you are hugely welcome. Just make sure the dentist you use is experienced. Feel free to ask me for advice at Clininca Europa (see advert on page 29) or call me (see my advert above)

it’s a golfer’s Life

The following may not be funny to all, but they’re very true *Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer. *Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins. And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks *Golf is harder than baseball. In golf, you

have to play your foul balls. *If you find you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here's a valuable tip: your life is in trouble. *Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot. *A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers ...neither of whom can putt very well. *An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play; it is always possible to get worse. *Golf's a hard game to figure. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink. *If your best shots are the practice swing and the "gimme putt", you might wish to reconsider this game. *Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is you. *Golf is like marriage: If you take yourself too seriously it won't work, and both are expensive. *The best wood in most amateurs' bags is the pencil.

Film review District 9 District 9 proves that sci-fi thrillers don't have to be star-studded to be visually compelling and thoroughly entertaining. With its clever documentary style, this is the most imaginative science-fiction movie to come along in years. Amid the suspense and action, there is a heartfelt commentary on xenophobia, corporate greed and apartheid. The title refers to the makeshift home in South Africa to which more than a million aliens have been consigned since coming to Earth two decades earlier. Their mother ship hovered over Johannesburg for months before a race of aliens emerged. Because the aliens resemble large crustaceans, people began to refer to them as "prawns." When we meet Wikus van der Merwe, he seems like an officious civil servant. He works for a huge corporation called Multi-National United (MNU) and is married to Tania, the daughter of a company boss. Wikus is assigned to head the massive eviction of aliens from District 9, during which he contracts a virus that changes his DNA. He is soon a wanted man. MNU wants him for reasons pertaining to alien technology, as do predatory Nigerian gangsters. Wikus evolves from smug pencil-pusher to terrorised victim to compassionate hero in a believable way.

Mujibar said, 'I am ready.' The manager said, 'Make a sentence using the words Yellow, Pink and Green .' Mujibar thought for a few minutes and said, ‘Mister manager, I am ready' The manager said, 'Go ahead.' Mujibar said, 'The telephone goes green, green, and I pink it up, and say, Yellow, this is Mujibar.' Mujibar now works at a call centre. No doubt you have spoken to him. I know I have.

Do a Deal.es A new low cost way to buy and sell everything in Spain! DoADeal.es is the new easy, low cost way to buy and sell virtually anything online in Spain. The idea was originated by Michael Russell, who moved to the Costa del Sol recently. In the process he discovered how time consuming it was to sell his old items. “I wanted to make the site easy to use,” said Michael. “Some other online auction sites aren’t for me. When I buy something, I want to ring the advertiser, have a chat, see lots of photos and make an offer.” After countless unsuccessful trips to the Sunday market to sell old items, Michael has spent the best part of the summer designing DoADeal.es. His result is a

very easy-to-use concept. Take a look at its key features: - No credit cards needed, pay using your phone. Very secure without the need to divulge personal data. *Easy to use. Place an ad (no cost for trying). Each step is simply explained. *One price for everyone. Ads are displayed by age, so everyone gets their chance to be listed at the top. If it takes time to sell your item you can boost your ad. Doing so guarantees placement at the top of the listings. *Lots of photos included for one price. *A real time classified advert listing in English for the whole of Spain. Do a what? Do A Deal today!
