I can’t believe I’m sitting here writing the editorial for the Christmas edition of The Sentinella already. Where on Earth does time go….? It seems like just a couple of months ago that I was thinking about what presents to buy for everyone, and now I’m thinking exactly the same again, but one year older and wiser… I’m not sure if anyone else experiences this problem, but I find that buying Christmas presents grows tougher every year. It’s not too difficult to buy my nieces presents, as they’re only two and six, so they’re at the ages where they like just about anything, including the packaging (which often gets more attention than the actual gift)! This year I’ve just come back from a one month trip to the west coast of the USA, followed by six nights relaxing on the beaches of Honolulu, Hawaii, so amidst all the sight-seeing (including dinner with a Hollywood film star), I was able to pick up a couple of Christmas pressies. However, I still have a way to go to be able to shout from the rooftop, “I’ve finished all my Christmas shopping!” Admittedly, I’m usually one of those right saddos that desperately tries to finish all my Christmas shopping by December 1st, just so I know it’s out of the way. But this year, what with the holiday and all, my plan hasn’t quite worked out. There are still a number of blanks next to the names on my Christmas List.

Strange News Big Mouth An Angolan man has been recognised as having the world's widest mouth by the Guinness Book of World Records. Francisco Domingo Joaquim, 20 - aka the Angolan Jaw of Awe - can fit a 330ml can of pop into his mouth sideways.

He can stretch his mouth more than six-and-ahalf inches wide. He recently put his skills to the test at the Big Mouth competition in Rome..
He wore 2ft aluminium stilts to walk every step along the 20 metre wire.
After finding out that he’d feature in the Book of Guinness World Records 2011, Chiquinho said it was "a dream come true".
Samati said he had the idea of combining high wire and stilts a year ago, and he’d been training for it ever since.

The law firm De Cotta McKenna y Santafé is pleased to announce its sponsorship of this year’s Anglican Church Christmas Carol Service, taking place at St Michael’s Church (Iglesia de San Miguel) in Plaza Andalucía, Nerja, at 4 pm on Sunday, 19th December. The Reverend Geoff Johnston, Priest in Charge of the Anglican Parish of Nerja and Almuñécar, will be conducting the service. Father Geoff as he's known, came to Nerja in June 2008 and he is here with his new wife Carol, whom he met at his former church in Dudley, West Midlands. Father Geoff was keen to do something different and has a love of the continent, so when he saw the Nerja post advertised in the Church Press, he jumped at the chance. Nerja may be a seaside resort, but Fr Geoff is not here to relax and unwind. "Far from it", says Fr Geoff. "I'm happy to be here, but I came to do a serious job. The church has a mission to reach out to people, and this is what we are doing. For example, we've recently set up the monthly "Messy Church" initiative - it's aimed at families, and is a crafts- and activitiesbased programme with a biblical theme - this is one way to help people grow in their faith". Fr Geoff was brought up in Kent as one of three in a Christian household, and - unlike his two siblings - felt the call to be a priest when he was 12 years old. He was ordained at the age of 24. When time allows, Fr Geoff enjoys caravanning, gardening, swimming and singing in the CoraXalia International choir, who are performing at this event. CoraXalia is based in La Viñuela, and was formed in October 2006 by accomplished and experienced soprano Marisa Bell-Young, its current president. The name derives from “Cor” for coro/choir, “axa” for “Axarquía” and “alia” for “Salia”, the river running through La Viñuela. Also set to perform are the barbershop harmony group “Tropical Tones”, who are based in the province of Granada and were also formed in 2006. Entrance to this Carol service is free - everyone is welcome to come along, and early attendance is encouraged. Any charity donations
received at the end of the service will go to The Sisters of the Good Samaritan ("Hermanas del Buen Samaritano") to help boost funds for their much-needed residential care centre for the elderly in Nerja, which they are hoping to open as soon as possible. Festive refreshments will be served afterwards in the meeting room located at the back of the church (opposite Los Cuñaos bar). Regretfully there is no parking nearby, but those attending are encouraged to park in Nerja's free car park, a five-minute walk away by taking a right turn at the roundabout situated at the beach end of Calle Ruperto Anduez. Save Our Homes Axarquia - Have your Vote ! A message from SOHA to Sentinella Readers: Save Our Homes Axarquia (SOHA) is an action group dedicated to fight for the rights of homeowners living in Axarquia. Many of these homeowners, having bought their homes in good faith, currently face issues regarding incomplete documentation and the courts challenging the legality of their homes. Although the threat of demolition is rare, many of SOHA’s members are discovering that it is difficult to sell their homes, ultimately causing some to feel trapped when they can’t sell and return to the UK for age or health-related reasons. The vast majority of these problems have been caused by the local government’s (Ayuntamiento's) improper issuance of licenses and poor adherence to planning regulations. If you are a citizen of the European Union and living in Spain, you are entitled to vote in the
municipal elections. And you should vote. Our apathy will only allow incompetent officials to remain in their positions and allow these incompetencies to persist. In order to vote, you must first register on the “padron” before the end of this year. You can then register to vote by 15th January. The Word Queen Think about your favourite book of all time. What do you remember most about it? Was it the plot, the brilliant writing, the theme, or the hooks at the end of each chapter? No, of course not. It was the characters! Perhaps there was one of whom you were particularly fond. You saw your father in him, or maybe your spouse. You liked the way he composed himself, in that calm, unfaltering manner, even in the midst of dramatic events. What’s important here is that you remembered him, long after you closed the book. There are various methods of constructing powerful characters, who breathe life into your book. My favourite is 'The Look Around You Technique,' because I’m a highly observational person. As I sit on a train, wait at the doctors, or sip
tea from a busy café, I don’t lose myself in a book or a newspaper. Instead I absorb everything that’s going on in the vicinity. The way the red-haired lady blushes as she listens to the gentleman by her side. An attention-seeking baby wailing for attention. The smile on the man’s face as he answers his mobile phone. Where can you observe people in a non intrusive way? At the park? On the way home from work? At lunch time? Gazing out of your window? Log the fascinating traits in your mental bank and delve into it next time you sit down to develop your characters. Orange Grove kitchens This month we revisited Mark at Orange Grove Kitchens. kami: So how´s business been recently? Mark: Not bad actually. The response from the advert has been pretty good. I have a couple of quotes out for kitchens, and I’ve also done other carpentry work. When I go to see clients, we start talking about this and that, and sometimes I go home with an order for fitted wardrobes for example. kami: So it’s not just kitchens you do then? Mark: Well no, it is general carpentry and interior works. I am doing a few more wardrobes now. People seem to think that a fitted wardrobe will be expensive, but when there is a space that is perfect for the wardrobe they need, that space is best utilised by a fitted wardrobe more often than not. To buy an off the shelf wardrobe doesn’t fit the space as well, and the doors usually take away available space. Fitted wardrobes can be easily designed to suit the space and room, and with sliding doors no more space is taken from the room than need be. kami: You can do total interior reforms then?
Mark: Yes. I have always worked with interiors. At the moment I am currently working on a project with a guy who owns a local penthouse that he wishes to sell. The property is amazing but somewhat tired and dated. For less investment than one would think, the plan is to replace the old bathrooms, kitchen, doors and wardrobes with new, and then to re-plaster the walls and redecorate. kami: Are you always on site when work is being carried out? Mark: Always. I like to co-ordinate a job so that it starts and finishes promptly, and I definitely do not leave jobs to go and do other things. kami: What are your hopes for the coming new year? Mark: I would like to get this one over with first Kami. But seriously, I think next year will see a real recovery. I can already see that people are becoming more confident in their spending, so hopefully, it will be a good year for Orange Grove. With the new year in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all past and future Orange Grove customers, and of course you, Tony and your family a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Bar Atila´s Pool Day Bar Atila kicked off this year’s “Children In Need” fundraising efforts with a pool day. All and sundry were invited to take part in a series of fun, light-hearted pool competitions. The main event was a knock-out tournament. Twenty-two people took part, including The Sentinella’s very own Tony. It all boiled down to a hard-fought final between Ralph and Kim, and Kim won! After the knock-out tournament, we all tried our luck at “speed pool,” a game in which the contestants try and pot all 15 balls in the fastest amount of time. Ralph cleared the table in one minute and 26 seconds, a full half minute faster than the next best. Finally, we had a game of “Killer” to finish off the day. We all had a great time however never lost sight of the event’s primary goal: to raise money for “Children in Need.” We’re delighted to report that this year’s kitty started with over 100€ collected from the pool day. As in previous years, Atila’s will be adding to the fund with money made at other events during the forthcoming weeks. If you fancy a game of pool pop into Bar Atlia’s on a Wednesday starting at 2pm, and you’ll be sure to find a good match!

Alfarnatejo Cabrilla merits a visit. This rectangular structure is traditional to the period with a Mudejarstyle red brick tower and two naves separated by semicircular arches. I have trouble shaking hands with someone who has been driving because the number one pastime while driving alone is picking one's nose. I remember once a friend of my Mum’s asked for grapes in her cheese sandwich. ‘How strange’, I thought….until I secretly tried my own cheese and grape sandwich a few days later. Delicious! Random Jokes In a run-down part of East London a fire destroyed a dilapidated four-storey house that had been divided into four flats. A Nigerian family of six Internet con artists and full time benefit cheats lived on the first floor... all six tragically perished in the fire. A group of seven Islamic welfare cheats, all illegally in the country, lived on the second floor... they too, all perished in the fire. Six Albanian, gang banger, ex-cons - all claiming political asylum and living off the state for free, occupied the 3rd floor... they too, died. But the middle aged British white couple who lived on the top floor miraculously survived the fire. The Equal Opportunities Commission, Amnesty International, Rights activists, black community leaders and the British Islamic Council were all furious at the apparent racial inequality of the situation. Why was just the British white couple saved? It was monstrous they claimed, and showed that systemic 'racism' still existed in all areas of public service - questions were raised in the House of Commons, the popular media picked up the story and within hours it was national and indeed international news.
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, when questioned stated calmly that it would be unwise to jump to conclusions until the Police and Fire Service had completed their report. He closed by stating that he expected their initial assessment to be available within the next 36 hours – so perhaps it would be best to let the experts gather the evidence and report back before he commented any further. The baying Press pack subsequently reported the interview in such way as to intimate that the Mayor was indifferent to suffering and was out of touch with the feelings of the whole East London community! A large motorcade of representatives from all five groups, together with the Home Secretary drove to the area, having demanded a meeting with the local chief fire officer. They made sure that a large pack of popular Press and TV had been briefed on the visit and so the motorcade was met by a huge gaggle of journalists, TV interviewers and cameras. On camera, they loudly demanded to know why the Africans, Black Muslims and Albanians all died in the fire and only the white couple lived. One bemused chief fire officer quietly replied, "Because they were both at work."

BEM idiomas Only 24 days to Christmas and 30 days until 2011! I have been busy buying all my Christmas presents online this year for a bit of variety, and what good service I received too. Both Argos and Amazon sent my purchases to Spain within a couple of days where I then received them on my doorstep (well, nearly)! I had to collect them locally from the courier within three days after they were received because they don’t deliver in the Campo. With nothing broken nor any ruined boxes, all arrived in perfect condition. Over the past four years I can remember receiving calls from local Spanish couriers trying to inform me that I had a parcel. I was never able to understand anything in the conversation and would eventually hang up on the poor Spanish man who was just trying to do his job. This same phone conversation would happen again and again. More days would pass making the arrival of my parcel incredibly late, and the penny would then drop. The next time I received a call from this chap, however, I was prepared with the necessary vocabulary: “Paqueta.” He finally understood me and after nearly twenty minutes we would have established where I could meet him to collect my package. The language gap with the courier, I’m happy to say, was not a problem most recently. I received his call, had a reasonably intelligent conversation with him and

Mind, Body & Spirit So often I hear clients say “I don’t know……. I don’t know what is wrong with me…………; I don’t know what to do……..; I wish I could decide……” Usually after a healing session the understanding or answer they have been looking for becomes clear and again, often they will then say: “I kind of knew that already, but I didn’t believe it enough”, or words to that effect. The problem is not a lack of knowing- in my experience most people are usually pretty clear about what is going on.. The real problem is believing it!. We have become so habituated to seeking answers from others who we perceive as expertsdoctors, counsellors, healers, psychics, fortune tellers, when in truth the real expert about you is you! How has this bizarre situation come about? Self belief is one of the first casualties of the kind of deep emotional wounding of infant abandonment I spoke about in last month’s article. But it doesn’t end there. Through childhood and adolescence our innate sense of selfknowledge, of knowing how we feel, what we want, what we need, what is good for us. is overruled and undermined. Over and over again we are told that others know better what is good for us:- our parents, our teachers, peers & family members we look up to, etc. Sometimes the message is rammed home with some form of ridicule or punishment, thereby impressing even deeper into our minds the disempowering notion that we don’t know what is good for us.
Its hardly surprising that when we grow up and leave home we continue to look for people to tell us what to do- be they bosses, gurus, partners, husbands, wives or whoever. Often these people have a vested interest in having us be or behave in a certain way- they may not have our best interests at heart. So we remain in situations and relationships that are patently not serving our own highest good. Healing and restoring our inherent self-belief is a journey which starts out the moment you decide to trust in yourself, in what you feel and know deep inside, and to act on it. Only by acting on it will you get the positive reinforcement by which this embryonic seed of self belief can grow and strengthen. Like all journeys worth taking, it begins with the first step, and will transform your life.
