Things are brightening up in the Axarquia area this month, with the launch of The Sentinella in COLOUR! The weather has been on the dull side throughout January, so we decided to take matters into our own hands and brighten up the outlook for the masses. Our new SUNNY pages aim to keep smiles on faces for longer, and provide greater reading pleasure than ever before. We would love to hear your comments about the new look. Strange News A US woman was stunned when she spotted Jesus - on her iron. Mary Jo Coady, 44, of Methuen, Massachusetts, spotted the image while doing a pile of ironing. She says the stunning resemblance to Jesus Christ has reassured her that "life is going to be good". She has decided not to use the iron any more and plans to purchase a new one. Fatties kicked off a website for beautiful people A dating website for "beautiful people" says it has booted off 5,000 members for piling on the pounds over Christmas. BeautifulPeople.com said it acted after users posted photos of themselves celebrating Christmas and the New Year - revealing they had "let themselves go". "We responded to complaints by moving these members back to the rating stage. This is the same as having them re-apply," said Greg Hodge, the managing director. "Their re-applications were reviewed by existing members and only a few hundred were voted back in. Over 5,000 were rejected." Most of those expelled came from the US and Canada, but nearly 900 were from Britain. The social networking site, which boasts 550,000 members worldwide, allows its members to decide on who should be allowed to join. Avatar Sex Fans of blockbuster movie Avatar are being promised an alien sex scene when the film comes out on DVD. The sex scene was cut from the cinema version of the 3D sci-fi adventure, director James Cameron told a press conference. It features the giant blue avatar of paraplegic US Marine Jake Sully locking hair with his love interest, Neytiri. The scene was left out originally because the film was aimed at a family audience.

It’s Only a Film’s World! What we learn from films All hotel beds have special L-shaped cover sheets which reach up to the armpit level on a woman, but only to waist level on the man lying beside her. Vanilla Pudding Robbery

Excerpted from an article which appeared in The Dublin Times about a bank robbery.

‘Once inside the bank shortly after midnight, their efforts at disabling the security system got underway immediately. The robbers, who expected to find one or two large safes filled with cash & valuables, were surprised to see hundreds of smaller safes throughout the bank. The robbers cracked the first safe's combination, and inside they found only a small bowl of vanilla pudding. As recorded on the bank's audio tape system, one robber said, 'At least we'll have a bit to eat.' The robbers opened up a second safe, and it also contained nothing but vanilla pudding. The process continued until all safes were opened. They did not find one pound sterling, a diamond, or an ounce of gold. Instead,

What’s more – and provided that the driving licence has not been withdrawn for the infraction of a serious offence – a 30% discount is available for those that pay the penalty within 30 days of receiving the fine. If you wish to pay your fines online, here’s how to do it: 1) Access the DGT´s website at www.dgt.es and enter the ‘Trámites y Multas’ section located on the left hand menu. 2) Select the fourth option on the submenu (¿Alguna Multa?) and subsequently, “Pago de Multas”. 3) Select option A – this will allow you to pay the fine without a Digital Certificate or Electronic ID Number. 4) Now enter the following information in this exact order to receive a receipt of pay

ment: document type, document number, first name, 1st surname, 2nd surname, record/file number and the total amount of the fine. NaturVets A Day With Naturvets…. We arrive at the clinic in Cómpeta in the morning and our lovely nurse, Lisa, had got there a little earlier to turn on the heating, as it’s freezing cold and raining! A little puppy is already waiting to be seen. It’s a street dog, but our client spotted him in Vélez-Málaga after he had been run over by a car and broke a leg. The leg fracture is complicated so we call the traumatologist, as he’ll be able to do the job better. He agrees to pick up the dog for an operation the next day, and he says he’ll try to reduce the cost because the dog has no official owner. Next is a long-known client, a mongrel dog, in for dental cleaning. The owners hope to get rid of the awful smell

coming from the dog’s mouth. It’s likely to be a success as the dog’s teeth are really dirty and need a good polishing! Everything goes to plan, until suddenly there is a lot of noise in the waiting room and the door is flung open by a desperate owner claiming his dog is dying! An intravenous catheter is laid into her arm, which isn’t easy as the dog is kicking and trembling. The owners are extremely upset. Diazepam is injected and soon the dog is stabilised. The owners are advised to go to the police as there might be more cases of food poisoning. Back at the clinic Juan is neutering a female cat, and our favourite labrador comes in for a session of acupuncture to help with his arthritis. He´s always happy to come and he seems to be improving a lot. Finally the

day is over, and we head down to the coast…

Michelle from The Sentinella faces up to a special treatment at the Wellbeing Centre, in Torrox Costa. This month Rebeccah Curtis, at The Wellbeing Centre, has a special offer for a Non Surgical Face Lift. I booked myself in for one and felt a little anxious at what to expect. It was the "non surgical" element that caught my eye, as I’m not brave enough to go under the knife! It was my first visit to The Wellbeing Centre and Rebeccah made me feel extremely welcome. Before we started Rebeccah asked a few questions about my daily cleansing routine. I think the guilty expression on my face said it all, but I was instantly reassured that I wasn’t being judged, nor about to be sold a bag of products. Instead I received sensible advice about how to protect my face in this climate with the essentials being sun block protection and keeping hydrated by drinking plenty of water. The treatment started and my face was massaged via a machine. Rebeccah explained that my skin would benefit from improved circulation and movement, increased oxygen and nutrients, as well as lymphatic drainage and uplifting. Throughout the treatment, it felt like I was being massaged with fingers rather than a machine and it was so relaxing. Together with the atmosphere of the centre and the gentle music playing in the background, I don’t know how they treat people without falling asleep themselves! What was also great about this treatment is that you can apply makeup straightaway after. It also aids healing quicker both before and after a surgical operation. I immediately noticed the change to my face and at the time of writing this, a few days later, my skin feels incredibly soft, and it looks vibrant. A course of treatments is an option but not compulsory. The number of visits will depend on each individual, but a recommendation is that you have one each week throughout the duration of the

course. So lie back for one and a quarter hours, enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the centre, and allow your face and you to feel better than ever. Rain, rain go away. Come again another day! I am sure many of you have had enough of it and will be happy if it doesn’t return for a while. But there are probably an equal number who would be delighted with more because we are all suffering from mopping withdrawals! La Vaqueria flooded so many times at the beginning of the year that my mop has totally worn out! For those with similar problems we sympathise and recommend that you take legal action if your house is new and not water tight. People with mortgages could try their bank, whose insurance may cover damages and repairs. If your problem is shoddy workmanship by a builder who suddenly doesn’t answer his phone, try the Juez De La Paz at your local town hall. These intermediaries are very helpful and can quite often solve problems between two parties without having to go down the Denuncia route. If, on the other hand, a denuncia is your only option don’t forget to check out whether you are eligible for legal aid. Couples surviving on relatively low pensions may qualify. Last month I said I’d be making monthly resolutions, rather than the traditional yearly one, which always proves impossible to keep! I asked people to contact me with information about lowering one’s carbon footprint in La Axarquia and I can now pass on a couple of handy tips. If your freezer is not full but needs to remain plugged in, fill it with carrier bags stuffed with newspaper. This will ensure it works more efficiently and therefore uses less electricity. Try to buy bread from your local Panaderia – much less energy has been used to produce an unsliced loaf that is not wrapped in plastic and has not been transported.

This month is diet month so it’s a low carbohydrate intake for me and lots of water. I have found the Atkins diet very effective in the past, but I now stick to my own version of it, which is not quite as strict so it’s a little more user-friendly. With children to cook for and a shop to run, I don’t have time to cook separate meals for myself, so a weight loss regime has to fit in around work and family. I will let you know how I get on! Having happily passed through life letting technology pass me by (a real dinosaur with head firmly buried in the sand) I have now enlisted the help of my teenage daughter and have a Facebook account! I understand (well, maybe!) that you may now look at this for up-to-the-minute news on La Vaqueria and see photos of all of our events, food and art works. The website is updated regularly too, but I think that this chat approach is a little more personal and current. As soon as the sun shines again everyone wants to be outdoors and we all start thinking about the garden and patios again. Certainly that is the case here and every little break in the clouds has seen us tidying up, re-organising and making new spaces for all of the lovely new stock due in from Morocco. I’m hoping to broaden the range of garden accessories with lights and ornaments as well as some unusual pots. The plants we sell here are all looking healthy and the more established ones will be happy to transplant during the next couple of months. I have a ‘buy one get one free’ offer on young trees which will be happier going into the ground this year. So do drop in and see us this month, even if it’s just for a chat and a cuppa. Unless you order a tropical salad, or you find yourself in a five star, luxurious restaurant, the salads in Spain aren’t anything to write home about. They mainly consist of lettuce, tomato, lettuce, tinned carrot / beetroot, lettuce, cucumber…and did I mention lettuce?

Empanadas – I spy with my little eye, something beginning with PIE! They come filled with all sorts of delicious concoctions. My favourite are the tuna and tomato. Yum!

Embutidos – This is a selection of cold sausages, which usually make last night’s dinner rise to my throat at first sight. A well disguised form of animal guts, intestines, organs, and Lord knows what else. I’ll pass, thanks!

Ensaladilla Rusa – This can be found on most run-of-the-mill tapas menus throughout Spain. I find it a little tedious after a while, but basically it’s served as a ‘slodge’ of mayonnaise, carrots, tuna and if your luck’s in, you might discover some olives too. Ensalada – Nothing more and nothing

Espinicas – Spinach and Popeye’s fave! I practically lived on this throughout the summer – each day I devoured a whole plate of it, also adorned with a selection of other salad veg – a much more adventurous selection than the typical ‘ensalada’ type and this time NO LETTUCE!

Spanish Foods (continued) Escalope a la Plancha – To be honest I never really know the difference between all the different kind of escalopes available in Spanish restaurants. They really don’t appeal and when I have been adventurous and ordered them, they all taste the same anyway… dry, chewy, bland and in need of a good dip with a particularly tasty sauce (the kind which masks all other flavours). Entremeses de la Casa – Homemade starters. You know what I mean… the kind of mini dishes that posh sorts serve on daintily held plates to a houseful of guests, who they try to impress with the show. Esparragos – As it sounds! Those green stick shaped vegetables, which make your wee smell weird if you eat too much (well mine anyway!)

Espaguetis – Spaghetti bolognaise – not always prepared in the way one would hope. Imagine taking some spaghetti and simply adding tomato sauce… nothing more, nothing less… Well that’s what you get served in most Spanish restaurants. No carrots, no onions, no meat, no peppers, no dash of red wine for taste. Nada. Estofado – Good old stew! The kind grandmother might have made. And if she didn’t then the kind your grandmother’s grandmother might have made. Absolutely delicious and slips down well with a side serving of rice.

Iceland Store Raise Cash For Charity Fundraising for Cudeca Iceland employees, Dominic and Sam, got their walking boots on and participated in a 5km sponsored walk in aid of Cudeca. Dominic’s Dad died of cancer in September 2008, and he was determined to do something in his memory and raise funds for the Hospice. Thanks to all their colleagues & friends who sponsored them. They raised a fabulous total of nearly 400€. Anne, who works in the Iceland store café also raised funds for Cudeca. She appealed for voluntary donations towards a hamper, then raffled it in the store, raising a fantastic 73€ from customers and staff. Cudeca sends sincere thanks to all involved for the invaluable support. Dominic is delighted to donate the money to such a

worthwhile cause and is sure his dad would be proud.

Be Prepared Terrorist Threats.... The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. BEM idiomas Read all about my progress learning Spainsh Well, I can honestly say that I haven't yet had the motivation to get back into the swing of my Spanish lessons. Don't get me wrong. I've been driving the twenty minute journey and attending my two hour lesson, but my heart just isn't in it. That's never a good sign, but the idea of failure is even worse. Failure isn't in my blood! What has demotivated me is the fact that I'm being taught a new pre-tense, I remember the same de-motivation last time I was being taught a new pre-tense too. My tutor, Sandra, will have the joy of teaching me this same pre-tense week after week, after week, until I finally crack it (or crack up)! Something that is proving a great help for me, is the i-pod I received for Christmas. A couple of Spanish programmes had been downloaded on it to help me learn. A Postcard From... Jan and Arthur Berry, from Caleta de Velez, recently took off for a safari in Kenya, Africa. Read about their holiday in the last part of the series… It happened to be hubbie’s birthday while we were at the Voyager, and once the hotel staff knew, they went out of their way to help him celebrate. We were very keen to see some real village life so we took a taxi to Mtwapa Village where we were shown around by some young men. We were glad we went, but very saddened by the conditions these people lived in. We visited three classes in the local school. The children were beautiful and so pleased to see us (especially as we took sweets)! They were all well-behaved and it was interesting to see them learning English. They are children, the same as our children, yet their lives are so different. Back at the hotel, we were invited to dine at the Captain’s table on our last night. We sipped cocktails on the lawn, followed by a nice meal, with two officers and three other guests. The officers were keen for our opinion of the hotel and staff – including anything we considered they could do

Random Joke The Horse and the Chick On the farm lived a chicken and a horse, both of whom loved to play together. One day, the two were playing when the horse fell into a bog and began to sink. Scared for his life, the horse whinnied for the chicken to go get the farmer for help! Off the chicken ran, back to the farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched and searched for the farmer, but to no avail, for he had gone to town with the only tractor. Running around, the chicken spied the farmer's new Z-4 series BMW. Finding the keys inside, the chicken sped off with a length of rope, hoping he still had time to save his friend's life. Back at the bog, the horse was surprised, but happy, to see the chicken arrive in the shiny BMW, and he managed to get a hold of the loop of rope the chicken tossed to him. After tying the other end to the rear

bumper of the farmer's car, the chicken then drove slowly forward and, with the aid of the powerful car, rescued the horse! Happy and proud, the chicken drove the BMW back to the farmhouse, and the farmer was none the wiser when he returned. The friendship between the two animals was cemented: best buddies, best pals. A few weeks later, the chicken fell into a mud pit, and soon, he too, began to sink and cried out to the horse to save his life! The horse thought a moment, walked over, and straddled the large puddle. Looking underneath, he told the chicken to grab his "thing" and he would then lift him out of the pit. The chicken got a good grip, and the horse pulled him up and out, saving his life. The moral of the story? When you're hung like a horse, you don't need a BMW to pick up chicks!

First, the Permiso de Circulación (Log Book) confirming the car’s number plate, chassis number, make, model, year of registration and the owner’s name and address. Check the listed owner’s details match his identification documents and check the car’s registered details match those of the car you want to actually buy. Check the Inspección Técnica or ITV (MOT certificate). The ITV confirms the car’s details and roadworthiness. Check the ITV is not out of date. If it is or is about

to expire, ask that the car passes its ITV as a condition of completion, as there may be a problem that the owner knows about but cannot readily be discerned by yourself. The vendor should show you his receipt for payment of the Impuesto Sobre Vehiculos (Vehicle Licence Tax) as this confirms that the annual road tax has been paid. If he doesn’t and hasn’t, you may become liable for the outstanding taxes. If buying through a dealer, he should have all the paperwork and be able to oversee transfer of ownership. If buying privately, you need to collate the above paperwork, complete the Solicitud (formal transfer request form) and present such to the Jefatura de Tráfico (DVLA). Redwell Infrared Heating Good Idea. Have you ever had such a good idea that you wanted to share it with everyone? Or have you ever found such a good product that you can’t understand why every household doesn’t have one? We have. My wife and I have felt so cold in the Spanish winters that we were practically in despair until we discovered infra-red heating panels. Made in Austria, to exacting and beautiful standards, they keep our home remarkably warm for a very modest cost. For example, our lounge diner is 9m x 4m with a 4m high ceiling and in normal winter temperatures it is kept lovely and warm by consuming just 1.2 kilowatts of electricity. When the temperatures dropped to near freezing in January this year we did have to increase this to 2.1 kilowatts, but that’s not a lot considering the size of the room. As a comparison, one bar of an electric fire

consumes 1 kilowatt, a kettle up to 3 kilowatts and air conditioning – well that can be massive! These are not the €60 conventional electric heaters which are heavily advertised and can have a place in the home (provided you sit alongside them). Redwell infra-red panels are absolutely top quality items that have been developed from industrial to domestic use. Infra-red was originally used to heat vast areas like warehouses, aircraft hangers and garages, which require warmth even when huge doors remain open. If they can achieve warmth in this type of environment, imagine what they can do for your home! I like to view these elements as a ‘toolbox.’ If your tool-box is full then you’re head and shoulders above many other writers out there. Now I fully understand About ‘Living in the Past.’ We used to go to friend’s homes Baseball games and lunches. Now we go to therapy, to hospitals And after-funeral brunches. We used to have hangovers From parties that were gay.

Now we suffer body aches And sleep the night away. We used to go out dining And couldn’t get our fill. Now we ask for doggie bags, Come home and take a pill. We used to travel often To places near and far. Now we get backaches, From riding in the car. We used to go out shopping For new clothing at the mall. But now we never bother… All the sizes are too small. That, my friend, is how life is, And now my tale is told. So, enjoy each day and live it up, Before you’re too damn old!

Bedroom Golf Hole in one! Here are the rules of the game. Each player should furnish his own equipment for play normally one club and two balls. Play on the course should be approved by the owner of the hole. Unlike outdoor golf, the object is to get the club in the hole and keep the balls out. For most effective play, the club should have a firm shaft. Course owners are permitted to check the shaft stiffness before play. Course owners reserve the right to restrict club length to avoid damage to the hole. The object of the game is to take as many strokes as necessary until the course owner is satisfied that play is complete. Failure to do so may result in being denied permission to play the course again. It is considered bad form to begin playing the hole immediately upon arrival at the course. The experienced player will normally take time to admire the entire course with special attention to the well formed bunkers. Players are cautioned not to mention other courses they have played, or are currently playing, to the owner of the course being played. Upset course owners have been known to damage players equipment for this reason. Players are encouraged to bring proper rain gear for their own protection. Players should assure themselves that their match has been properly scheduled, particularly when a new course is being played for the firsttime. Previous players have been known to become irate if they discover someone else playing on what they considered to be a private course. Players should not assume that a course is in shape for play at all times. Some play-

ers may be embarrassed if they find the course to be temporarily under repair. Players are advised to be extremely tactful in this situation. More advanced players will find alternative means of play when this is the case.The course owner is responsible for manicuring and pruning any bush around the hole to allow for improved viewing of, alignment with, and approach to the hole.Players are advised to obtain the course owners permission before attempting to play the back nine.Slow play is encouraged. However players should be prepared to proceed at a quicker pace, at least temporarily at the course owners request. Valentineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Recipe Chocolate Sweetheart Cakes, Yummy! Ingredients 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 3 tbsp cocoa powder 3/4 cup flour 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/8 tsp salt 1/2 cup cold water 3 tbsp cooking oil 1/2 tsp white vinegar Chocolate Frosting Stir 1 tbsp melted butter or margarine and 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder until smooth. Add 2/3 cup sifted powdered sugar. Stir in 1/4 tsp vanilla and enough milk (2 to 3 tsp) to make a spreading consistency. Beat with wire whisk or wooden spoon until smooth.

Method Stir flour, sugar, cocoa powder, soda and salt in a medium-sized bowl. Make a hole in the centre. Grease a baking pan with oil and little flour. Stir water, oil, vinegar and vanilla extracts. Add the dry ingredients and beat it until smooth. Pour into the pan and bake it at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes.

Leave the cake to cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.Using a 3 Âź inch heart shaped (cookie) cutter, cut the cake into 4 heartshaped pieces. Spread chocolate frosting on top. Decorate the hearts with icing.
