Strange News Smoking Chimp A chimpanzee addicted to smoking has died aged 52, after living ten years longer than the average chimp. Head Teacher Eats Tarantula One of Britain's leading head teachers stunned pupils by eating a tarantula in front of a packed assembly. Aydin Onac ate the baked spider to raise money for a new sports and drama centre at the highly rated St Olave's Grammar School in Orpington, Kent. The spider was sourced from Cambodia, where they are farmed and eaten by locals as a delicacy, and Mr Onac insisted its importation complied with British and EU guidelines. But one parent, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's all very well raising money, but why does he have to behave as if he's taking part in I'm A Celebrity?" Another complained: "I know these spiders are farmed in Cambodia and considered a delicacy there, but we're not in Cambodia, we're in Orpington and in Orpington we don't do things like this."

High-Tec Car Park UK's most amazing car park A state-of-the-art car park has opened in Birmingham, as part of the brand new Cube building in the city centre. It's the first car park in the UK that does away with the infuriating business of finding a space. Motorists simply drive their car into a 'transfer garage', get out, then watch as the vehicle is lowered into the threestorey car park. After that, it's placed in an empty bay on an automatic carrier. When the driver wants the car back they simply swipe a special key fob. The vehicle is then collected and lifted back up to

the garage. Helpfully, the car is even turned around so it can be driven straight out. The system's manufacturer, German company Wohr, claims that there's no chance of the wrong car being the to returned garage. It also has superior energy efficiency than a standard car park, because of a reduced need for lights and ventilation. The Cube, which houses offices, shops and apartments, was completed earlier this year and is now taking on its first tenants. Spaces in the 339 capacity car park are still available and prices vary depending on how long the pass lasts for.

Need a Valet? How many times since you've lived in Spain have you got in your car and thought 'yuck, this car needs a damn good clean,' but you couldn't be bothered to do it? Well I constantly think this and the usual culprit is that annoying dust. Well rest assured, as you can now have your car valeted any day of the week for a very affordable price. Paul Atkin´s Car Mechanic in Puente don Manuel has recently introduced a full valeting service from just €22 per vehicle. If your car happens to be in the garage for a service or a repair, then why not take advantage of a full valet too?! Luckily for me my car didn't need repairing or servicing, but it was definitely in need of a thorough clean. Included in the valet was a hand wash and leather, window clean (inside and out), boot, seat, carpet and mat vacuum, all interior hard trim clean and shine, wheel clean and tyre black. All this for an amazing €22. (Ford Fiesta size). And the most fanstastic part of all was that new car smell as I drove down the road. Los Caracoles Re Recently my boyfriend and I were privileged to spend a night at Los Caracoles, which literally translates as ‘The Snails’ and the experience left us totally shellshocked (excuse the pun)! If you’ve ever driven on the road from Torrox Pueblo to Frigiliana you’ve probably caught a sight of Los Caracoles, which is made up of a scattering of snails, accompanied by a larger snail. The ‘daddy’ snail is the main restaurant and reception area, while the 11 smaller snails make up a mixture of bungalows and double bedroom accommodation.

We coupled the stay with a trip to Frigiliana where we enjoyed a cheeky glass of the local sweet wine for only 75 cents. After we enjoyed a brisk stroll around the village, occasionally entering the odd shop to ogle the creative wares inside. That evening we dined in the large snail and

We stayed in a bungalow snail and I found the whole experience utterly exciting. I’d never slept overnight in a snail before and it sure beat the average comparatively tedious hotel room. As soon as I walked inside the snail’s door my face lit up with a smile; Moroccan style lamps, ornamental Geckos on the walls, rocking chairs, a comfy sofa, a flat screen TV – and all that just in the living room! The bathroom held yet more surprises – a double bath tub and even a rather impressive set of combs. Outside, Los Caracoles boasts a healthy range of flowers, plants and trees, which add an eyepleasing burst of colour. Amidst the 11 snails there’s also a swimming pool, which is open 23 hours a day, so if you fancy a midnight swim then you’re more than welcome to take the plunge!

Another name for spiders is arachnids. In Greek mythology, there is a legend explaining how arachnids got their name. The story claims their was a girl in Ancient Greece named Arachne, who was famous for her weaving skills. But the goddess Athena became jealous of Arachne and out of spite she turned her into a spider. Thus, the name arachnid was born. Spiders’ silk webs are known for their strength as well as elasticity. But just how strong are they? The silk is so strong, that it could stop a Boeing 747 dead in the air. Pilots are lucky spiders don’t eat airplanes. To start a web between two far apart objects,

spiders need to be crafty. Some spider facts use the term “flying,” but that’s not actually how it’s done. Spiders use “ballooning,” to jump between areas. The spider raises its abdomen to release a long thread to catch a breeze, lifting the spider into the air. Because they are so small, spiderlings could be easy prey for other insects. Luckily, spiders are born with almost no colour, making them nearly invisible in the air. A Frenchman, Bon De SaintHilaire, showed it was possible to make fabric from spider silk. He would collect spider cocoons then boil, wash, dry and comb them to collect the thread. Today, this method would never be profitable. 1.3 million spider cocoons would yield only about 2 pounds of silk. The spider begins spinning its web in the evening or early morning before the flying insects get air-borne.

Breast Screening Using DITI - Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging Janet Van Dam has seen both her mother and her younger sister fall prey to breast cancer. Thinking about how she could help other women from getting the disease, she has set up a practice to detect potential tumours before they’ve have the chance to grow. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989 and died within eighteen months, at the age of 51. Then, in 2008 malignant tumours were found in her sister’s breasts. “Those two special women gave me the idea to bring something new to the Axarquia region of Spain, which will benefit many people,” said Janet. “In my new practice I’m offering Medical Thermography and Nutritional Coaching. Changing your eating habits will help to improve your health if a thermal examination indicates a change in diet is advisable.” Medical thermography (or Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging) is carried out by a special camera that can see differences in body temperature, indicating changes in muscle tissue, arteries, veins and bone structure. In a healthy body, the temperature pattern is more or less symmetrical. If an unsymmetrical pattern shows up, it’s worth investigating further. The screening can pick up on any alterations in the breasts at a very early stage before a cyst or tumour has even developed. This is the key to a good outcome. Here are some important points about Thermography: • It was registered as a Class 1 Medical Device in the EEC 2007/47/EC and complies with all EEC regulations. • It is the only real tool we have to detect early changes. A mammogram unfortunately can

only see the actual tumour once it’s there and the size of a large pea. • There is no radiation involved, which is dangerous for you or for the technician. Did you know that the chances of getting breast cancer increase by one per cent each time you have a mammogram? • There’s no pain, as your breasts are not squashed in a machine • Non-invasive. You do not need to be touched • It can be used for women of any age, breast densitiy is not important. • It can see a larger area of the breasts and around than a mammogram. • The Meditherm system I work with is top of the range, reliable and it has been used for many years with good results. Alfarnate

Every month Sally Harrison from Axarquia Properties talks us through the towns in the Axarquia. This month she speaks about Alfarnate. Alfarnate is one of the villages on the Route of Oil and Mountains. It can be found in the far northwest of the Axarquia at a height of 925 metres and although like most villages its almost completely flat, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surrounded by the rugged mountains of Jobo, Palomera and Enmedio, which tower majestically above the green valley filled with olive and cherry trees. Craggy grey rocks dominate the landscape, dotted with scattered trees perilously clinging between mosses and ferns. Mighty oaks and pines vie for attention below the hills of Puerto de los Alhazores and Puerto del Sol, natural steps that connect this area with its surroundings. Overlooked by the Cerro del Santo Cristo mountain, where outdoor mass is sometimes held at the sanctuary on top, the village boasts a unique layout with three bridges straddling

the Palancar stream. On one side is the Ermita de la Virgen de Monsalud, located in the upper quarter, a sixteenth century building with three arches and on the other side the Iglesia de Santa Ana, a 16th century building with a graceful Mudejar tower and oak beams supporting its natural wood ceiling. The Ayuntamiento was also built in the 16th century with three ubiquitous arches dominating its facade. Before leaving the area be sure to stop for a repast at La Antigua Venta de Alfarnate, a fully restored, 17th century inn, steeped in history, situated at the crossroads two kilometres from the village. As you are led behind the bar to be seated in the restaurant take a photo of the famous bandolero Luis Candelas in his prison cell. Sitting with his head on his hand he seems to be reflecting on his misspent youth which ended on November 6th 1837, when he was garroted at the age of 33. To drive to Alfarnate turn off the Colmenar to Velez-Malaga road (A356) at the Rio Gordo to Periana junction and drive in the direction of Periana (A7204), turn left for Alfarnatejo and continue up to Alfarnate (MA4102). The nicest way to return is towards Periana (MA4103) where the road winds its way down view spectacular views of the mountains, lake and distant coast.

Arkwrights Helping The Children´s Home In Malaga For those of you who don’t know, we raise money for the “Ciudad de los Ninos,” Malaga Children’s Home. We’ve had a wonderful response in the past, with customers bringing Christmas presents and donations to ensure that these children have something to celebrate. Most of the children are adolescents, therefore if anyone brings presents bear this in mind. tomate – No prizes for guessing what this one could be….Ermmm tomato perhaps?! tortilla Española – If you’ve lived in Spain for any length of time and you haven’t tried the good old traditional Spanish omelette, made with potato, eggs and sometimes onion then you haven’t lived! It’s delicious…. tortilla Francesa – The French form of omelette doesn’t contain potatoes, only eggs (unless you order a mushroom omelette of course, in which case it’ll also contain mushrooms, etc, etc…) trucha – This is trout. To prepare for cooking wrap it in foil with garlic, onions, white wine, salt and pepper. Cook for 20 minutes or so, open your foil parcel and enjoy the succulent trout in-

tarta – This is the word for cake and there are many different varieties. For example ‘tarta de queso’ is cheesecake. I find they never really get the biscuit base right (it’s always a bit soggy and disappointing), but apart from that who am I to moan?! ternera – Beef! BEM idiomas Now you may read this article and think I’m crazy talking about Chrimbo already, but as I write this there are only about 64 days to Christmas! “Another year passed by” some of you may say. “Where has it gone?” Well, when I look back over this year the word ‘improvement’ pounces out at me as far as my Spanish is concerned. And too right seeing as I’ve sat through approximately 102 hours of Spanish, give or take a few bank holidays and a couple of sickies! Unfortunately this only lasted for a couple of weeks. However, I did pick it up again later in the year. I know that doesn’t count, but something is better than nothing! I’ve been living in Spain for nearly four years now and I regret the fact that I haven’t learnt one new word every day to widen my vocabulary. I’m getting good with my verbs now, but I just don’t have enough vocabulary to enable me to say everything I want to. So you’ve guessed it, my New Year’s resolution is already

Mind, Body & Spirit In an earlier article I touched on the issue of abandonment and its impact on our emotional and mental state. In thirty years of practise as a healer, I find this issue frequently appears at the core of my clients’ problems. Low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, self hatred, hopelessness, helplessness, anxiety, chronic fear states and more all are rooted in the emptiness and desolation that is the inner experience of abandonment. Depression, panic attacks, addictions, eating disorders and even schizophrenia, are all traceable to a fundamental FEELING of abandonment. Relationships too are shaped and often sabotaged by underlying fears of abandonment and rejection. These almost invariably arise at the beginning of life, usually caused by prolonged separation from our Mother. Until recently, modern man deemed newborn babies to be insentient, unaffected by the experience of birth and early life. Mother/ baby separation was not seen as problematic, and in some cases it was even thought to be desirable. Only recently has the natural wisdom begun to be re-accepted and scientifically validated, that babies and infants are dependant on the Mother child bond in order to develop a firm emotional foundation. This includes feelings of belonging and connectedness; of being a worthy, loveable person, of deserving love, support and care; of confidence in ones ability to give and receive love and of trust in Life and in others. Some years ago Jean Liedloff, a social anthro-

pologist, went to live with an Indian tribe in South America. She was struck by the children’s extraordinary level of emotional maturity and confidence, and by their rapid physical and social development.. She determined the reason for such precocity was something she termed “the continuum”. From the moment of birth a baby was never alone! Initially carried by the Mother in a sling, then later kept close by, free to explore their individual freedom but always within easy reach of the Mother’s reassuring presence. As the babies grow their continuum expands to include other family members, siblings and infants. They never “lose touch” with their primal sense of belonging, of being connected, having their presence recognised and their needs responded to. In today’s modern society such an ideal start in life may be hard to achieve. However, no matter how abandoned we may have perceived ourselves to be, such deep feelings can be healed. As human beings we are hugely resilient, and while it’s a challenging journey, it’s one which I’ve been privileged to accompany countless clients upon, and I’ve shared their liberation and joy at once again feeling a fundamental sense of belonging, worthiness and love.
