One word I don’t like much in the English language is ‘impossible’. Take a moment to study that word and consider how ridiculous it really is. Example. The four minute mile was deemed ‘impossible’ for years, until 1954 when Roger Bannister broke this imposing belief barrier and stunned the world with his achievement. He admitted that he broke the so-deemed ‘impossible’ limit through perseverance, determination and ongoing visualisation techniques. He ran a mile in four minutes so many times in his head that his nervous system produced the result for real. The funny thing is, the following year 37 more athletes conquered the four minute mile and a further one year after this, more than 300 runners did the same. Before Roger Bannister broke the record, athletes didn’t even bother trying. After all they had heard from all too many people that such an achievement would be ‘impossible.’ This became so engrained in their minds, that the thought no longer even arose. When they realised it was in fact possible, they all put their minds to accomplishing the same feat. So what does this mean in the grand scheme of life? Unfortunately in the same way, all too often our brains are washed into believing that something is impossible, when in fact if you are able to train yourself into switching that negative thought mode, the thing in question becomes completely possible. Those who teach us that certain aspects of life are impossible are usually those closest to us, either friends, relatives, or external sources such as the media. We aren’t even aware that they are doing it. Most of the time nor are they. Maybe you meet with friends and say something like. “I am going to launch a new website and it will be number one

A common response by someone who can poison your brain in this way would go something like, “be realistic.” Don’t listen to comments like these. Stay away from negativity at all costs! All you have to do to reverse your patterns is to change your beliefs. This is a pretty in dept process, but one which we shall soon be covering in The Sentinella in our new monthly column. What have you been taught is impossible to achieve in your life? Take that thing, grasp it in your head and spend some time each day imagining yourself achieving it. Picture it so vividly that you actually begin to feel it is real. Ask yourself questions, such as “How can I achieve it? Where can I start? Who could I turn to for advice?” The human brain simply adores questions. When it is bombarded with questions, its very nature is to ponder the solutions. Before long all the answers you need will come straight to you and then you go on and make your dream not only possible, but probable and enjoyable. Take your dictionary right now and cross out the word impossible. This word could cost you a dream.

Live Life to the Mac A US Big Mac addict has eaten 23,000 in 36 years and has kept every receipt to prove it. Don Gorske said he hit the 23,000 milestone last month, continuing a burger obsession that began in May, 1972. "I enjoy them every day," said Mr Gorske, 54. "I need two to fill me up." "Sometimes people call me a freak but it doesn't bother me. I just say respect people as they are." Despite his fatty diet, Mr Gorske says he keeps himself in good shape. He's 6ft 2ins tall, weighs 13 stone, and walks 10 miles a day. 4

Back to School Protection A supermarket in China has created controversy by advertising condoms for sale at a special "back to school" price. The store in Shanghai erected an eyecatching sign in the middle of a display of Durex condoms. The supermarket has been criticised for aiming condoms at students and also for distracting them from their studies. Trumpety Trump A Chinese elephant that became addicted to heroin after being fed spiked bananas is to return home after undergoing detox. The four-year-old heffa, called Xiguang, received methadone injections for a year at five times the human dosage. It was illegally captured by traders in 2005 in south-west China. When police arrested the traders and freed the elephant, it was found to be suffering from withdrawal symptoms. The elephant's eyes kept streaming and he made continuous trumpeting noises. It is thought that the traders fed the elephant bananas laced with heroin to capture and control it. Xiguang was sent to a wild animal protection centre on Hainan island in south-west China for rehab. Woofy Witness A dog nicknamed Scooby has become the first animal in the world to appear as a witness in a murder trial. The four-legger is believed to have been with his 59year-old owner when she was found hanging from the ceiling of her Paris flat. Police believe it was suicide but her family demanded a murder investigation. During a preliminary hearing the pet was led into the witness box by a vet to see how it reacted to a suspect. It is said to have "barked furiously". The aim was to decide if there was sufficient evidence to launch a full murder inquiry and a judge is yet to reach a decision. A spokesman for the Palais de Justice in Paris confirmed that the Nanterre case was the first time a dog had appeared as a witness in criminal proceedings in France.

The Good

Victory – My, hasn’t Spain performed well in sports competitions this last six months or so? First up was the football Euro 2008 in which we all had mighty great fun cheering on Es-pa-ña Es-paña, and screaming ‘podeeeeeemos….’ at the top of our voices. When they won the whole of Malaga came to life, cheering, blowing whistles and car beeping until the early hours. What a great sense of comradeship. I was proud to be Spanish. Oh, but I’m English – almost forgot! Value – Money stretches a lot further here than it does in the UK, or anywhere in Northern Europe in fact. The cafes that sell tinto de verano for just 1€ or a menu del dia for 5€ still do exist. Let’s hope our value for money here on the Spanish costas continues for a long time yet. When I’m 80 I still want that feeling of a full purse!

Views – Wherever the eye wanders in Spain there are stunning views to be found. The peaceful lake of Viñuela, the

rugged mountains, the characteristic sea, the rolling beaches, even the whirring power turbines of the Costa de la Luz…there really is a view to suit all tastes. The Bad

Verbs – Urrrgg! Why do such finicky words have to exist. There are way too many to learn in any kind of rapido timeframe. I only wish I was three again, when information just seemed to sink in quicker. Vacation – Holidays? What are they?! The Ugly

Vagrants – Especially the ones that hang around outside supermarkets drinking cheap wine and beer all day while begging for loose change. Then of course there are the ones of mainly Eastern European descent who think it is perfectly acceptable to show you a picture of their baby, rub their tummies, pull the most pathetic, sad face and stick their hand out demanding money. Sorry, I’m not fooled. How come the majority of them weigh in at 14 stone anyway? Certainly not hungry in my book.

Tips on how to carve your pumpkin for the night of 31st October

First things first, you have to spend some time in the local supermarket or greengrocers, finding the perfect candidate to carve. Start the selection process by deciding on the shape and colour: •Tall thin shapes are ideal for funny faces and whimsical expressions. •Round shapes are great for happy faces – and scary ones, too. •Oddly shaped pumpkins are perfect for creating unique characters. •Want something different? Consider a white pumpkin. Even when unlit, white pumpkins seem to glow as the daylight fades. Before making your final selection, make sure your pumpkin: •Has a broad, gently curved face for carving that is vertical or tilted upward. •Is free of soft spots or breaks in the skin. •Sits well on the ground and is stable. •Includes a bit of stem, especially if you will be removing the seeds through the top. Although faces are the most beloved patterns for pumpkins, don't limit your thinking! Patterns, shapes, and even letters can be used to create one-of-a-kind treasures. Or consider using stickers, glitter, or paint to add even more decoration to your cutout design. You'll need to cut an opening to remove the seeds and the soft flesh inside the pumpkin. Traditionally, this is done by cutting a lid on top to provide access to the interior. Cut a six-inch-wide circular opening around the top of the pumpkin. Use a slow and even sawing motion and light pressure. Keep the tip of the blade pointed toward the center of the pumpkin. This creates a bevel that prevents the lid from falling into the hollowed out pumpkin. Another approach is to make the opening in the bottom of the pumpkin instead 46

of the top. This makes it easier to light a candle inside the pumpkin, especially if the pumpkin is tall. If you go down this route, you'll need a screw driver or butter knife to pry the lid from the sticky flesh under the thick rind. Using a spoon or scraper and your hands, remove all the seeds of slimy flesh from the pumpkin. To minimize odors and decay, scrape the inside walls until you reach firm, dry rind. But don't throw away those seeds! Just clean them off, let them dry, and try our recipe for absolutely fabulous Roasted Pumpkin Seeds. Now that your pumpkin is hollowed out, you can follow a three-step process to bring your design to life: Step One: Transferring the Pattern. Use tape to attach your pattern to the pumpkin. This step is easier if you cut away the excess paper around your design. If your pattern is too big or too small for the pumpkin you chose, use a

Remove the pattern enough to check for missed spots. When you are done, remove the pattern completely.

Step Two: Cutting the Shapes If you are using a steak knife (adults only, please!), gently plunge the blade point through the rind to start your cut. To start a pumpkin saw, use the poker that came with your tool kit to make a hole at the start of the cut. Then insert the pumpkin saw and follow the line of dots around the shape. Let your blade or saw do most of the work. Maintain light pressure and use a gentle sawing motion to cut through the rind. Steady the pumpkin with your free hand, which should be kept well away from the blade. In some cases, it will be easier to make the cuts if you cradle the pumpkin in your lap. Never try to force a knife or saw blade around a tight turn. Instead, remove the tool and start a new cut just as you did the first. As you finish each shape, gently put it out from the inside. If the cutout refuses to budge, check that all of your cuts meet at corners, and that the blade had cut all the way through the rind. In some cases, you may need to gentle pry out the shape with a butter knife.

Step Three: Clean Up the Shapes For maximum brightness, trim the inside walls of the cutouts so they are straight and even. Also remove stray fibres and strands around the inside edges. Now pop in your candle and wait for the ghosts!!

Competition Time Space Shuttle over Periana

Restaurante Cantueso in Periana have been running a photo competition all summer and report over 30 entries so far. As might be expected, many photos have featured the flora and fauna from the beautiful gardens around the restaurant, and one entry even purports to show the space shuttle passing overhead. Entries so far can be seen via a link on their website at www.cantueso.net and there is still time to enter. There are few rules, but photos must be taken this year in or around Cantueso. There is no need to eat or drink there, simply enjoy the view and take some pictures. Entries may be sent via e-mail or submitted in print form. Prize winners will be announced in October. In view of the magnificent location it is not surprising that Cantueso have capitalised on it and Nicky Scott says that in the last two years they have developed their website to the extent that it now gets over two thousand genuine visitors each week. Of particular interest is the live webcam which enables visitors to check out the view and current weather. One visitor told Nicky that he looked every morning when he was back in the North of England, just to see what he was missing and to check the level of Lake Vinuela! One other customer even claimed he had chosen his birthday meal before leaving England by looking at the on-line menus. Horse Riding

Les and Rob’s adventures part 2...

Les and Rob left London with great plans of running a horse-riding establishment in Andalucia. Like many they expected everything to go smoothly and to live out their days happily in the sunshine with not a care in the world. It didn’t quite work out that way and they ended up living in a small apartment in Granada with not a horse in sight. Rob kept a record of their experiences by sending e-mails to friends back in the UK. We published the first one last month, here’s the second. Funny how you meet people! We've lived here about four weeks and we never knew the neighbours. There are eight flats altogether and we weren't even sure what nationality most people

were, we just muttered Hola! to people if we saw them and they muttered Hola! back. Today I couldn't get my new Spanish mobile phone to work properly and rather than go back to the shop for a full and frank explanation of the intricate features of my Nagasaki, WAP, Digital, Hands Free, SMS, blah..blah....in beautiful, expressive and totally incomprehensible Andaluz, I decided to ask Mike. Mike lives a couple of doors away and I'd heard him on his phone speaking English. 'English' and 'Phone'. You see my logic? Mike was stoned, totally wasted, but very nice. 'Did I want a beer? Did I want a joint? Did I want to take some for later? (OK) Did I play guitar?' (apparently I'm the only foreigner in Granada not studying flamenco guitar). Anyway Mike knew nothing about phones but was sure that Gregorio (next door) did, Gregorio wasn't stoned but was happy to join Mike in getting that way. Gregorio knew nothing about English or phones but was certain that Raul would know. Raul knew lot's about phones and used to live in Dublin, so speaks a sort of Spanish/Gaelic tongue that (as a Scot) I understood perfectly. He's on the case and has had stern words with the sharks who flogged me the phone and all will be well tomorrow (it's fab to live in a world where tomorrow everything will be perfect!). Apparently I'm on the wrong network, 'Absolutely nobody's using Amena these days darling! We're all on Movistar'. How was I meant to know? P.S. I've just had what Mike gave me for later. I love it here!!!!”

Launching into the month of ghosts and witches (yes Halloween) let’s see what cocktail recipes we can suggest for one ‘ghoul’ party! The Mad Eye Martini

Ingredients: 1/2oz Hpnotiq liqueur 1oz super premium vodka 2oz lychee juice For Eyeball Garnish: 1 canned grade AA lychee in syrup, drained 1/4 tsp cherry, strawberry or raspberry preserves 1 blueberry Preparation: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail

shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Lychee Eyeball Garnish: Dry lychee and fill with preserves. Place blueberry, blossom end facing out, into the cavity. Skewer with cocktail pick (search for Halloween theme picks or picks that look like a miniature ice pick for the full affect).

Ghostbuster Ingredients: 1oz peach schnapps 1oz melon liqueur 3-5 drops of Irish cream liqueur Preparation: Pour the peach schnapps and melon liqueur into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add the Irish cream drop by drop into the centre of the drink.

Devil’s Punch Ingredients: 2oz tequila 1oz orange liqueur 1oz Limoncello 1oz sour mix dash of orange juice Preparation: Pour the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into a sour or highball glass.

Skeletons in your Closet Ingredients: 1 1/2 parts Hornitos Plata Tequila 1 part DeKuyper Island Blue Tropical Schnapps 1 part pineapple juice 1 part mango juice Preparation: Rim a margarita glass with salt. WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 1ST 2008 DEAR DIARY…….

As I’ve now had LA VAQUERIA open for a couple of years I feel today’s entry should deal with a few home truths. Last week I found myself accompanying customers down the road as they were trying to leave, still talking about what we do here. I wonder if they found that quirky British eccentricity endearing?! All of the lovely visitors who make it through the road works each month (THANKYOU……you know who you are!) arrive triumphant, (albeit sometimes a little travel weary) and once introductions are made and refreshments served everybody wants to know what it is that we do here in LA VAQUERIA ARTS & CRAFTS CENTRE. To be honest, I do so much that although I start off with the good intention of explaining clearly and concisely I am soon waffling, losing the thread and then forget completely! “Senior” moments can definitely be ruled out as I’m simply not old enough (and neither are any of my friends or visitors…just in case they are reading). Upon reflection, I’m wondering if I’m just not business like enough…..of course I shall be using the “artistic temperament” excuse to get over that one! On the other hand, I am running my own show so perhaps I should put any inconsistencies down to Gemini ism – dual personality: one in business, one up to her armpits in paint?! That seems to have most angles covered but leaves the glar-

ingly obvious dilemma of how to improve? How to become more efficient? One possibility would be to look up my website where Katrina Franke Software and I have gone to great lengths to ensure that all of the activities are clearly stated. I’m wondering weather a few placards around the garden along with some strategically placed prompt cards might be an idea? But as a relatively new student to the “art of delegation” I have learnt that the best course of action would probably be for those of you who did manage to glean some sense out of me to swap it with those who have a different bit, then keep passing it on so that when you call in next time you can tell me what I’m up to whilst I get the kettle on and slice the cake!!!

This Month we look at the benefits of Olive Oil.

This is the liquid made from the pressings of the fruit of the ancient olive tree. The first pressing is known as, "extra virgin" and the ultimate known as "pomace", pressed from the seeds. Extra virgin olive oil is one of the most digestible of all edible fats and helps to assimilate vitamins A,D and K. It contains essential acids that cannot be produced by our bodies, essential fatty acids. It is helpful in slowing the aging process and helps bile, liver and intestinal functions; as well as there being evidence to suggest it helps against cardio-vascular problems, (being rich in monunsaturated fats; oleic acid). There is evidence that the consumption of extra vigin olive oil exerts anti-inflamatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-hypertensive as well as vasodilatory effects in both humans and animals. It is an excellent remedy for dry skin, being nutritive and moisturizing. Washing first with a good natural soap, for cleansing, before massaging a small amount of extra virgin olive oil into the skin, before retiring for the night, will help re-pair and renoursh. Book Review

Today I’m tackling three books and one genre. That’s the genre of Young Adult Fantasy. Think JK Rowling, CS Lewis and Philip Pullman and you'll know what I mean. They’re books for teenagers but adults can easily enjoy them as well. So why Young Adult Fantasy? Because these have always been my favourite type of book!

First up, Stephanie Meyer, an American author who is apparently the new JK. She has written a series of four books. The last one, Breaking Dawn, just recently released to great fanfare. Time Magazine even included Meyer on its list of '100 most influential people for 2008'. Her books are aimed at teenage girls, and the storyline in each one revolves around the love between school-kids Bella and Edward. All very simple, except Edward is a vampire! Though Meyer's books draw on vampire love, they are perhaps closer to the work of British teen cult novelists such as Jacqueline Wilson or Louise Rennison, concerned with sex and morality. Second, another popular quartet of books, Uglies by Scott Westerfield, which is fab if you have a daughter going

through puberty, because it dramatises the looks-obsessed world we live in like nothing else. Scott Westerfield really gets it about young adults, self-image, the fear of being different, the desire to be the same. The world he creates is imaginative and compelling. All reviews highly recommend it. Finally, Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin which is quirky, uplifting and full of imaginative detail. The plot revolves around Liz, a 16 year old girl who is killed in a hit and run accident. She wakes to find herself on a ship - the SS Nile with thousands of other people heading for an unknown destination. But realisation that she is actually dead is a long time in coming and only when she finally arrives at Elsewhere does she realise the truth. Not only is she is dead, she is destined to get younger and younger until finally she is sent back to Earth to live another life. Like the other two books it’s a great read, if you’re a young adult or not! So, step out of the real world and check out Young Adult Fantasy, it’s jam-packed with surprises, vivid imagination and full on drama. As the older children go back to school it´s time for the younger ones to start nursery, for the first time. As the manager of the Montessori Nursery Torre del Mar, one of the questions I get asked is “What is the best way to settle and beable to leave my child at nursery for the first time?” Preparation is the place to start. Take your child to visit the nursery you have chosen, talk to the staff, ask any questions or concerns you may have. Discuss a plan of action for the first day. You know your child best. It might be you prefer to stay for the first half hour then wait until he/she has settled then explain to you child you are leaving now but will be back later. Maybe you would prefer to see the child into the room then say goodbye and leave the room without lingering or prolonging it, if so do it. Be positive! The staff should be experienced in dealing with these situations and will be on hand to give the child lots of reassurance and will ring you if needed. Talk with your child, tell them about the nursery, who they will meet and about playing with the other children. Get a book on the topic. Read it together, talk about the story and how they will be going to a school like it. When the first day comes try and be relaxed show a positive attitude (easy to say, I know) children pick up on parents anxieties. Let them help you prepare their bag and maybe they would like to take a favourite toy or cuddly for reassurance, which in some children is quite natural. Amazing Animals

This month we look at the huge Hippopotamuses.

Hippopotamuses love water, which is why the Greeks named them the "river horse." Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun. Hippos are graceful in water, good swimmers, and can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes. Their eyes and nostrils are located high on their heads, which allows them to see and breathe while mostly submerged in water.

Hippos also bask on the shoreline and secrete an oily red substance, which gave rise to the myth that they sweat blood. The liquid is actually a skin moistener and sun block that may also provide protection against germs. At sunset, hippopotamuses leave the water and travel overland to graze. They may travel 6 miles (10 kilometers) in a night, along single-file pathways, to consume some 80 pounds (35 kilograms) of grass. Considering their enormous size, a hippo's food intake is relatively low. If threatened on land hippos may run for the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they can match a human's speed for short distances. Hippo calves weigh nearly 100 pounds (45 kilograms) at birth and can suckle on land or underwater by closing their ears and nostrils. Each female has only one calf every two years. Soon after birth, mother and young join schools that provide some protection against crocodiles, lions, and hyenas.

Hippos once had a broader distribution but now live in eastern central and southern sub-Saharan Africa, where their populations are in decline.

When a hippopotamus opens its mouth very wide it may be trying to scare a potential rival away by showing off its canine teeth. These teeth can be 20 inches long. During a fight, male hippopotamuses will ram each other with their mouths open using there heads as sledgehammers, which brings their canines into play, and using their lower jaw to throw water at each other.
