From the Ed..

Happy Christmas to all our lovely readers and advertisers! Whether you’re spending the merry days here in Spain or back in rain-sodden blighty, we wish you a truly fantastic time. I’ll be celebrating Christmas Spanish style, with my boyfriend and his twentyfive strong family. Before the arrival of Three King’s Day, their big celebration is Christmas Eve, so on December 24th I’ll be stuffing my face with a (kind of) roast dinner, followed by various desserts, plus plates of marzipan and other sweet treat. In years gone by I’ve always brought a typical English offering with me, just to add a little variety. Last year I brought mince pies with custard, which proved particularly popular, and the one before that I laid Christmas Crackers on the table for everybody. The whole family transformed into what seemed like five-year-olds as they scrambled over silly plastic toys. I did laugh! I need to think quickly about what to take this year - suggestions welcome! Its funny how differently two nations (only two hours or so by plane) celebrate! After dinner his family throw a huge party with loud music, dancing, karaoke singing and general silliness. It’s always a giggle and as you might have suspected, a lot of brandy does the rounds! Christmas Day is a much more tranquil event and not much celebrating goes on that day, as everyone is busy nursing their hangovers. New Year’s Eve is the next biggy and then before we know it Three King’s Day arrives. When it comes to presents, my boyfriend and I tend to take advantage of the differing traditions so we enjoy TWO pressie days – Christmas Day when we fill stockings for one another and Three

Please mention The Sentinella when replying to adverts King’s Day when we fill shoes in the same way. Two Christmas’s in one. I’m certainly not complaining! This year we’d like to hear from our readers about any BIZARRE CHRISTMAS PRESENTS received. Whatever they happen to be, please share them with our readers and email: sales@thesentinella.com As for the New Year, I’m looking forward to the holiday of 2010 and a trip to Australia, spending some time in Melbourne and Sydney. That’s not until February, but we can’t wait to see kangaroos, koalas and of course the Ozzies themselves (plus a couple of British friends who have moved there). The thought of spending three weeks on a different continent is particularly appealing, as is being on the opposite side of the world! Speaking of new starts and excitement, the current incarnation of The Sentinella website will be launched sometime in December. We can’t promise an exact date as yet, but it will definitely be complete by the end of 2009, all ready for the dawn of a New Year. We have some really exciting things happening in 2010, so do stay tuned!

age of 98. Bertie and Jessie Wood ended their 36year marriage when they were both two years away from their 100th birthdays. They got married in Elstree, Hertfordshire, in 1972, having both ended previous marriages, before moving to Falmouth in Cornwall four years later. However, by 2008, when they were both aged 97, their relationship faltered and a decree absolute is believed to have been granted subsequently. In Devon last month, Les Atwell, 94, and Sheila Walsh, 87, married to become Britain's oldest newly-weds. Kids think Hitler was a football coach One in 20 British schoolchildren thinks Adolf Hitler was a German football manager, according to a new survey. One in six youngsters believed Auschwitz was a theme park - and one in 12 thought the Blitz was a European clean-up operation following World War II. The findings are contained in a poll for the veterans' charity Erskine, which asked 2,000 kids aged 9 to 11 about the two world wars. One in four said they did not think about soldiers who died then, and 40 per cent had no idea when Remembrance Day is.

Boy, 11, declared reincarnated holy man

Man is punchbag for stressed women

A US boy is not going back to school after he was declared the reincarnation of a Buddhist holy man who first died in 1250. Boston-born Jigme Wangchuk, 11, has now moved to India where he has been made the head of a Buddhist sect in the country's eastern Darjeeling city. His parents say they discovered their son was not like other children two years ago when he started talking about his "past life". After hearing his description of a temple he had never visited, monks proclaimed he was the reincarnation of the 'Rinpoche' or high priest Galwa Lorepa, the founder of one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Now he will spend the next ten years in virtual seclusion and only be able to communicate with his former school friends via email.

A Chinese man has launched a secret sideline - by renting himself out as a punchbag for stressed women. Xiao Lin, a gym coach in Shenyang, in northeast China's Liaoning province, charges 100 yuan (nearly £9) for 30 minutes for his services and says he has already had two customers since launching his new business. "The first woman was about 25 years old,” said Lin. “She paid for half an hour but soon got tired and spent the rest of her time just chatting to me," he said. the 'Proactive' Decision Maker Be careful before you make any rash decisions today...! If you've ever worked for a boss who reacts before getting the facts and thinking things through, you will love this! A company, feeling it was time for a shake-up, hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, CEO noticed a guy leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He asked the guy, "How much money do you make a week?" A little surprised, the young man looked at him and said, "I make £300 a week. Why?" The CEO said, "Wait here." He walked

back to his office, came back in two minutes, and handed the guy £1,200 in cash and said, "Here's four weeks' pay. Now GET OUT and don't come back." Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked around the room and asked, "Does anyone want to tell me what that guy did here?" From across the room a voice said, "Pizza delivery from Domino's."

The Fairytale Wedding

Funny Christmas Quotes

You have just walked out of the church after your delightful wedding ceremony and on the church steps, both your families are applauding you with a hundred friends gathered around. The photographer raises his camera and following your family's tradition, both of you are holding beautiful live white doves which you will release together. The bride and groom stand happily shoulder to shoulder with a dove gently held in both hands as everyone eagerly awaits the climax of your marriage vows. The photographer gives the ready signal and you open your hands toward the sky and release the doves as a symbol of your eternal love. Not a dry eye anywhere, such a moving sight, the camera flashes and the moment is captured for all eternity...

'I once bought my kids a set of batteries for Christmas with a note on it saying, toys not included.' Bernard Manning 'I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph.’ Shirley Temple 'Let me see if I've got this Santa business straight. You say he wears a beard, has no discernible source of income and flies to cities all over the world under cover of darkness? You sure this guy isn't laundering illegal drug money?' Tom Armstrong 'Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people once a year.' Victor Borge 'Santa Claus wears a Red Suit, He must be a communist. And a beard and long hair, Must be a pacifist. What's in that pipe that he's smoking?' Arlo Guthrie

Wedding Gown £2,500. Photographer £2,000. Vintage Rolls Royce £1,000. Having 'the twins' pop out and say CHEESE in front of your family and friends ... PRICELESS!

Finally television has reached the 21st century; it won’t be long before satellite TV as we know it will be consigned to the history books as all the major broadcasters now offer their services via the Internet. We are no longer talking of poor quality streaming video like we see on YouTube; we are talking full HD quality content streamed to your internet enabled device, device meaning a medium that can be connected to your existing HD TV (any TV will work). Therefore anyone in the UK (Oops I mean Spain) can now watch high quality UK television via the internet (broadband required). buyer in a more ‘realistic’ market. With “Time & Materials” this does not need to be expensive. As a client, you will pay cost prices only, with receipts given for every material. The control of the budget is yours and as such, you only pay what is affordable to yourself. Nick and Lesley, of Hotel Palacio Blanco in Velez-Malaga, are one of “Time & Materials” main clients. Our flexibility suits them very well as we can be in and out at times that correspond to their quiet periods during the day so not to disturb their paying guests. More importantly, we never leave behind an “on-going building site”. Work areas are always cleaned and finished, despite non-completion of a particular project or job, until the next allotted time.

In a recession, businesses, especially those connected to construction, do one of two things; adapt or die. The current recession is crying out for changes in the way we all think and conduct business. To survive both the good and bad times transparency is needed and this, above all, is the ethos behind “Time and Materials”. My business partner, Paul, an expert plasterer, and I, a carpenter and project manager, decided to give our clients more flexibility, more options and certainly more control. customs

Brazil - Father Christmas is called Papai Noel. Many Christmas customs are similar to USA or UK. For those who have enough money, a special Christmas meal will be chicken, turkey, ham, rice, salad, pork, fresh and dried fruits, often with beer. Poorer people will just have chicken and rice. Finland - Finnish people believe that Father Christmas (Santa Claus) lives in the north part of Finland called Korvatunturi, north of the Arctic Circle. People from all over the world send letters to Santa Claus in Finland. (It is only fair to say that the people of Greenland say that really, Father Christmas lives in Greenland!) There is a even big tourist theme park called 'Christmas Land' in the north of Finland, near to where they say that Father Christmas lives. France - In France, Christmas is always called 'NoĂŤl. Everyone has a Christmas tree, sometimes decorated in the old way with red ribbons and real white wax candles. Fir trees in the garden are often decorated too, with lights on all night. Germany - Germans love to decorate their houses at Christmas. Many houses will have little wooden frames holding

electric candles in their windows, and coloured pictures of paper or plastic which look beautiful from the outside at night. Often too, they will have an 'Adventskranz' - a wreath of leaves with four candles. (Advent - meaning 'coming' - is the 4 week period before Christmas). On each Sunday of Advent, another candle is lit. Most homes will also have little wooden 'cribs' - a small model of the stable where Jesus was born, with Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, and animals. Hungary - Susanna Denes, a Hungarian friend contributed the following: Santa Clause (Winter-grandfather) (Telapo or Mikulas) comes on the 6th of December. Children should clean and put their shoes outside next to the door or window before they go to sleep. Next day candies and/or small toys appear in them in red bags. For children, who don't behave well, a golden birch placed next to the sweets, a symbol for spanking... (but don't worry, it is just for fun, and not for actual punishment.) Portugal - People adhere to the tradition that Father Christmas brings presents to children on Christmas Eve. The presents are left under the Christmas tree or in shoes by the fireplace. A special Christmas meal of salted dry cod-fish with boiled potatoes is eaten at midnight on Christmas Eve.

De Cotta Law Making a denuncía – what you need to know. By Myles G. Jackson - an English Lawyer with De Cotta McKenna y Santafé In this month’s column, I discuss the denuncía – which means to ‘report’ a crime or a dispute (as in with your neighbour). Generally, people make a denuncia when they’ve been mugged, or lost their passport and need official confirmation so the Consular authorities can issue in an emergency a travel document or replacement passport. If you have been victim of, involved in or witness to a criminal offence, car crash or any of the above, simply attend your local police station and report what happened or what you saw. In Nerja, the guardia don’t speak English (at least not whilst on duty) but do have a list of local interpreters who, for a fee, are happy to assist you and report the theft of your camera. For those living in remote villages, the duty officer’s English may be a little better than your Spanish and interpreters may not be as readily available. In such circumstances, you may prefer the path of least resistance and call the denuncia hotline (tel. 902 102 112). The hotline is staffed by bi-lingual speakers who will ask who or what you wish to report. All you have to do is speak English in calm, measured, assured tones, confirm your name, address, NIE and what it is you wish to report. It’s probably sensible to pen what you propose to say in advance so that you don’t confuse, omit or forget key information. Thereafter, the denuncia will be for22

warded to your local national police station which you’ll need to attend within 48 hours to formally sign the report. One should note that the denuncia hotline is for reporting criminal offences rather than civil infractions. So where you have lost your driving licence or your neighbour is playing his iPod too loud for comfort, you’ll need to attend the station in person. Upon reporting your matter to the police, they will make preliminary enquiries of possible witnesses, compile any evidence and prepare a file. This may take some time. Although, it is fair to say that most denuncias go no further than the village bobby having a quiet word in the perpetrator’s ear. Where sufficiently serious, the matter will be referred to the Public Prosecutor who, if satisfied that there is a case, will refer it to the local judge. If the judge decides that no criminal offence is made out, the file will be archived; if he considers that an offence is made out but the perpetrator cannot be readily established, the file will be shelved pending further evidence and; if he thinks that there is a case to answer, he will hear evidence for both the prosecution and defence before determining guilt and sentence. If you wish more information on this particular topic or would like to discuss any matter raised therein, contact Myles Jackson or Reyes Gomez Llorente, De Cotta McKenna y Santafe, on 952 527 014. Las Nenas kennels We’re a Danish couple, who apart from one and a half years spent in Denmark, have lived in Spain since May 2004. We previously let out holiday homes and we also owned a small real estate company. Since returning to Spain in July 2009, we have started a dog kennel, as we feel there is the need for a focus on dogs not just being left to themselves, but being played with, stimulated and exercised. As dog owners ourselves, we are aware that leaving your pet in another person’s hands is a matter of trust. It is important to us that a kennel owner has time to care and meet each dog's individual needs. That is exactly our aim. We believe the dog's well being is essential to the owner and ourselves, as much as it is to the dog itself. Las Nenas Kennels is situated in the

countryside in the area between Canillas de Aceituno and Sedella, only half an hour drive from the coast. We have eight spacious individual kennels, one ‘family size’. The kennels are protected from the sun and sheltered from heavy rain and wind. We are just finishing building a large fenced play area. Besides that we walk the dogs at least three times every day in quiet settings with hardly any traffic at all. You are always welcome to contact us for an appointment or a viewing so we can chat about your dog's needs. Contact us on 646 271 895 or email info@andalucia-service.dk We look forward to hearing from you. See main advert on page 108

random Joke A woman comes home and tells her husband, 'Remember those headaches I've been having all these years? Well, they're gone.' No more headaches?' the husband asks, ‘What happened?' His wife replies, 'Margie referred me to a hypnotist & he told me to stand in front of a mirror, stare at myself and repeat, 'I do not have a headache ' 'I do not have a headache ' 'I do not have a headache ' Well, it worked! The headaches are all gone.' ‘Well, that is wonderful' proclaims the husband. His wife then says, 'You know, you haven't been exactly a ball of fire in the bedroom these last few years, why don't you go see the hypnotist and see if he can do anything for that?’ Reluctantly, the husband agrees to try it. Following his appointment, the husband comes home, rips off his clothes, picks up his wife and carries her into the bedroom. He puts her on the bed and says, 'Don't move, I'll be right back.' He goes into the bathroom and comes back a few minutes later and jumps into bed and makes passionate love to his wife like never before. His wife says, 'WOW! - that was wonderful!’ The husband says, 'Don't move! I will be right back.’ He goes back into the bathroom, comes back and round two was even better

than the first time. The wife sits up and her head is spinning 'OH MY GOD' she proclaims. Her husband again says, 'Don't move, I'll be right back.' With that, he goes back in the bathroom. This time, his wife quietly follows him and there, in the bathroom, she sees him standing at the mirror and saying. She's not my wife ' She's not my wife ' She's not my wife ' . She's not my wife ' His funeral service will be held on Saturday.

uTurkeys

are large birds related to pheasants. They lived almost 10 million years ago.

uTurkeys are the only breed of poultry native to the Western Hemisphere. They were first domesticated in Mexico and brought to Europe in the 16th century. uA male

turkey is called a tom or a gobbler, a female turkey a hen, and a baby turkey a poult or chick. A young male turkey is called a jake and a young female is called a jenny. A group of turkeys is called a flock.

uWild turkeys can fly for short distances at speeds up to 55 miles per hour. On the ground they can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour. uThe bare skin on the throat and head can change colour from flat grey to shades of red, white and blue when the turkey becomes distressed or excited. uThe gizzard is a part of the stomach that contains tiny stones, which helps them grind up food for digestion. uWild turkeys have dark feathers which help them blend in with their habitats. Domesticated turkeys have been bred to have white feathers.

mating, the female turkey prepares a nest under a bush in the woods and lays her eggs. She will lay one egg each day until she has a complete clutch of about 8 to 16 eggs. The eggs are tan and speckled brown eggs. It takes about 28 days for the chicks to hatch. After hatching, the babies will flock with their mother all year. The first two weeks they won't be able to fly and the mother will roost with them on the ground.

save our homes At the November meeting we had a very full agenda and the problem of a local couple receiving a demolition order in October, to be carried out by December, was discussed. After living in a house for several years, it is not only a shock to the system, but it becomes a costly exercise as you then have to employ a solicitor to fight your corner. We heard that requests for help from the UK Government have been sympathetically received. Two committee members had recently met with the Junta to look at this case and a sample of others in Alcaucin, Benamargosa and Vinuela, in order to decide what could be done to solve the problems. We also heard that several of the associations along the coast have the full support of the Liberal Green Party in both the Andalusian Government and in the European Union. Our next meeting will be in February, unless any emergency crops up, and further details can be found by logging onto our website: www.SOHA.es

Book Excerpt Sol Searching – A Fun-Filled Tale of a Modern Girl’s Move to the Costa del Sol Have you read Keidi Keating’s Sol Searching book yet? It’s racing up the sales chart on Amazon and everyone’s talking about how funny it is! Here’s an excerpt from the chapter entitled ‘First Days.’ Later that morning, as there was nothing better to do than build an ark and find two of every animal to take aboard, I joined my parents on their weekly outing to a local charity group. “Spot the person under the age of fifty” I thought scanning the room. The group was holding a sale of disintegrating tat to raise funds for the centre. I glanced at the sorry looking possessions on show. “How about this vase for your new apartment?” asked my Mum, trying to transform a bad situation into a good. The vase in question looked like it belonged in a museum or other place of historical significance. It was even turning that rotten yellow colour, which is a frequent vision on The Antiques Roadshow. I rolled my eyes and shuffled to the fairy cake stall to lift my dampened spirits by eating. It was very disappointing, when after months anticipating a new and fab life in Spain I resorted to being chatted up by wrinkly retirees. Walking sticks, varicose veins, false teeth and purple rinse weren’t on my ‘hot topic’ conversation list. “You can always join our knitting club if you’re looking for something to do,” said an old dear, who introduced herself as Deirdre. “I’m making a beautiful crocheted cardigan at the moment in blue. I already have one in grey…” “I have six great grandchildren you know?” croaked a ninety-six year old called Vera, rummaging through her brown leather handbag. “Let’s see if I can find some photos. They’re so adorable. Katie, the eldest, is doing ever so well at school. They think she’s a genius, would you believe?” 42

I feigned a smile, but I wasn’t in the least interested. “Would you like a mint?” she continued, leaning on her walking stick. “No. Thank you,” I said glaring at the rotting packet, which appeared to have been purchased in 1982. Where were all the young people to talk about Big Brother, that new flavour of vodka and who shagged who in last night’s episode of Sex and the City? Look out for another excerpt from the book in next year’s edition. Sol Searching is available to purchase from Arkwrights in Puente don Manuel, the Tuesday farmer’s market in Trapiche (on The Sentinella stall) and from various websites, including Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk Find more info on Keidi’s blog – www.Sol-Searching.com

Yippeee, “it’s CHRISTMASSSSSS!!”. Yes, that time of year is here once again and I have purchased my Christmas cards nice and early this year. For those who have been keeping up with my monthly article, you probably know why! Well let me explain…This year I promised myself that I would take the time to write all my cards in Spanish! Some of you may say “well that’s easy”, but I intend to send a special, personal Christmas wish in each card. Admittedly I’m only sending ten cards this year, as opposed to my usual sixty, which makes the task a little easier I suppose! So if you know me and you don’t speak or read Spanish, be prepared to get the dictionary out, that’s of course if you are lucky enough to be one of my ten! I’m very proud that writing my cards in Spanish is something I am now able to do with confidence, I would not even

46

have considered it a year ago. This is all thanks to BEM idiomas in Velez Malaga, run by Viviane and her wonderful team. But my special thanks is directed towards my teacher, Sandra, for her caring and patient attitude. I only hope she will continue to teach me until I’m fluent. With a little more determination I will crack this lingo! Christmas will soon be here and before you know it the New Year too. Maybe questions are starting to race around your head. New year, new start perhaps? New year, new goals, new year, new job? Well if it’s the latter, then you may also need to add NEW YEAR, LEARN SPANISH! Many foreigners living in Spain are looking for work. If this applies to you speaking the language will put you one step ahead. Don’t put it off any longer. azafun!! “I did Mum,” I insisted. “No you didn’t, but I didn’t expect you to.” I could hear the disappointment in her voice, “…and I know you find it difficult remembering anything which doesn’t immediately concern you.” She meant I found it difficult thinking of anyone apart from myself. This may have been the case in the past, but I had changed, I really had. I looked down at the box I had neatly wrapped the night before containing the five volume series of The History of Spanish Wine. “And why should you remember me, you’re so busy these days.” She sounded sad. “You’re wrong, I even bought you a present. I just woke up late that’s all.” “Stop lying! You’re always making things up, you haven’t changed since you were a child.” “Don’t start that again. It’s true, I have!” “Don’t lie…. and don’t go stopping on the way to buy me something.” “I don’t need to! Your present is sitting here next to me, I promise, it’s all wrapped up and everything!” “Of course it is. Look we’ll see you when you get here.” She didn’t believe me and the only way I could prove I was telling the truth was getting to her house very fast, so fast in fact, that she’d know I hadn’t had time to stop at Eroski on the way. I was going to take ‘the short cut’. ‘The short cut’ was up over the mountain - instead of around it. The route LandRovers and tractors and tanks took. I patted my 15-year-old Saab encouragingly and set off with enthusiasm up the mountain. About 10 seconds later my Saab decided it was being driven by a moron and gave up altogether. Firstly the engine stalled. I lurched backwards at speed down the very steep track with a sheer drop on one side. I applied the foot break. The engine wasn’t on, so the foot break didn’t work. I said ‘Uh- oh” and applied the handbrake. The handbrake did nothing (as I’d driven to Malaga the week before with it on) “That’s not good,” I said as the car hur-

tled down the track towards a tight bend with the steering lock on. At the last moment I remembered something my grandmother used to say when I went to see her. “Get out…” So I put the car in first gear and threw myself from the drivers door (luckily I was driving an English car, which meant I landed on the track and not over the edge) The car lurched a couple of feet and the back wheels disappeared off the side of the mountain. The car creaked and the front end actually lifted off the ground. The front wheels were now an inch from the dirt. I had only a few seconds of credit on my nasty little Movistar-phone (don’t get me started) enough for just one call. I didn’t hesitate. The phone rang once. It was my mother’s voice. “Ok, the good news is, I’m ok, I’m alive, your present is still safe and I can actually probably still reach it. The bad news is, the car’s balancing on the edge of a cliff and if I take your present off the front seat, the car will disappear down the mountain. Hello? Hello???” Bill is alive and well and can be found Wednesday to Sunday at the Azafran Oasis Restaurant in Alcaucin. See inside back cover for main advert

Places to go Come Rain or Shine! By Keidi Keating If it’s Raining, head to The Science Museum, Granada City I’d planned a final end of summer sunbathing stint on the beach the weekend just gone. I LOVE the beach. This year I even managed to achieve a golden brown tan, without achieving the all too common tomato effect. It helped that my boyfriend, Chema, was on stand-by to rub cream into all those hard to reach bits. “Since when haven’t you been able to reach your legs,” he would say. “Since today,” I mumbled into the sand, relaxing a notch more on each breath. On this particular day, though, the beach was out of the question. “The forecast is rain over the whole of Spain,” said Chema, eyes fixed to Google weather. “Great!” I said. “Bang goes the beach. What can we do instead?” Chema suggested a dozen different ideas, each which was shrugged off by me, who didn’t fancy any of them. Then he hit the nail square on the head. “How about the Science Museum in Granada? That has a roof.” Now don’t get me wrong. My idea of a perfect weekend doesn’t usually involve traipsing around a MUSEUM…Quite the contrary. I find museums totally, utterly, absolutely, boring. But, on this day, I quite liked the idea of jumping in the car, journeying across rain soaked roads and seeing something at the other end. By the time I’d washed my hair, decided what to wear and eaten breakfast come lunch, it was already 2pm so we decided to book a hotel for the night in Granada and get up early Sunday morning to visit the museum. It all started so well. The Hotel was

the science Museum - granada pleasant and comfortable and we found a lovely restaurant for dinner that night. We were tucked up in bed by 1am and I set the alarm to wake us up at 8.30am. That’s where it all went pear-shaped. I THOUGHT I had set the alarm. But in actual fact, I hadn’t. I awoke to the sound of banging on the door. ‘The cleaners are early,’ I thought. “What’s the time?” I asked Chema, rocking him awake. He groaned and slid his mobile phone from the bedside table, sitting up in a shot. “WHAT? It’s 11.38.” Oooops! Not only did we miss breakfast, but we also missed two-and-a-half hours of planned museum time. Pulling up outside it, bellies grumbling with hunger, we purchased two tickets, determined to see something. We had just three hours to see such a vast amount. The first room we entered was full of children running around having fun and playing with the various gadgets and experiments on show. Chema instantly transformed into a tenyear-old and I found it hard dragging him out. There was so much cool stuff to see, that if you haven’t been, then I recommend you go. It’s not like usual museums, where you walk around in a semi-trance wishing you were elsewhere. This is a doing museum. You get to try things, pull things, push things, watch things and play things. My favourite part was the brain game, where you and the opposition sit at opposite ends of a gadget. There’s a ball in the middle and whoever relaxes their mind the most wins, as the ball rolls away from them. Cool hey. Checking out my image via the infrared camera was also eye-opening, especially as I was the only one in the whole room with a green nose! Everyone else’s were a lovely orange colour. Typical! Three hours was nowhere near enough to see everything. We reckon we did about half of it, so no doubt we’ll be returning some time.

If anyone else has been, do let us know what we missed! Parque de las Ciencias, Avda. del Mediterraneo 18006, Granada Email: info@parqueciencias.com Tel: 958 13 19 00

THE 10 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS............ Merry Christmas everybody, from all of us here at LA VAQUERIA, we wish you a very good and happy one. For many of us, (our younger friends in particular) these school holidays are predominantly about presents, to others the onus of the festive season is most definitely on food and perhaps a little liquid overindulgence, but to many, the priority is the spending of time with friends and family (if you can manage to fit a little of each in you are probably onto a winner!) It always seems especially important to those of us who do not live so close to our relatives: a time to meet and welcome new members to the family as people marry and new generations are born, but, ohhh how heartbreaking to say the goodbyes when it is all done and dusted! Last month I was extremely fortunate to be able to visit the Birmingham N.E.C. to attend the Christmas Arts & Crafts Exhibition: fantastic, huge, packed with innovative ideas and to top it all, I was accompanied by my father, teenage daughter and aunt. Not only that, but I stayed a wonderful 4 days with close family and friends……… far too short! A lovely break but nowhere near time enough to fall out, so sad to take your leave when it seems that you have only just arrived; the goodbyes were horrendous! In previous years we’ve been for a fortnight….too long! The peace and tranquillity of Granny and Grandad has lost its appeal to most self respecting teenagers by then! 50

During the summer holidays many teenagers return from their studies for the whole duration, sad as it is to see them go, huge sighs of relief reverberate around many villages as life returns to normal and routine and order prevails once more! No, in my humble opinion the 12 days of Christmas could be shortened just a tad, it’s the 10 days we should be planning and I hope you and your families enjoy every minute of it! In the shop we have lots of lovely gifts and ideas (I did all of my shopping in LA VAQUERIA and all within my weight allowance!) so do drop in and choose from some of the many original designs by local artists or choose from some of the hand crafted Indian or Moroccan goods. Alternatively come and have a fun morning with Marion at her next mosaic workshop on Saturday 12th December, your own pretty gift for that extra special someone! Happy Christmas. a Postcard From... A Postcard From, Kenya Africa Jan and Arthur Berry, from Caleta de Velez, recently took off for a safari in Kenya, Africa. Continue to read about their holiday. Next day we drove for about one and a half hours on an unmade road, through little villages of waving, smiling children shouting for sweets, until we arrived at the Sarova Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in time for lunch. This lodge was more up market and after a very nice lunch we spent a couple of hours at the swimming pool before starting our final game drive. Again, we had been spoiled by our sightings in day one, but just as we were giving up hope of seeing anything “different”, we spotted a herd of elephants in the distance and urged our driver to try and get nearer. He was great and managed to park right beside the herd and we took some fantastic pictures. They were so close we could see into their eyes! What a wonderful way to end our safari.

We spent the last night in Salt Lick Lodge which is built on stilts, and having previously been part of the Hilton group, was definitely the best of the three we stayed in. Lots of animals visited the water hole there that night and we watched them while we ate dinner. The rooms were excellent, as, once again, were the food and the staff. Read part six next month…. 76

15 mins of Fame An English couple from Velez Malaga are on television this month…! Toby and Susan Woolrych appear on "We Are Family", a series of four programmes, broadcast by BBC 2 starting 27th November at 9pm UK time. They feature in episode three, which shows on 11th December. ”It all came about because my brother answered an advertisement inviting families to take part,” said Toby. “The first I knew about it was when a girl from the production company rang and asked if I would be willing to be involved.” The film is largely shot in the UK, though some of the clips were shot here in Spain. The producer and his assistant spent four days with the couple last summer. ”Susan and I were interviewed for hours, about anything and everything, but mainly family issues,” said Toby. “Then, in September last year, the extended family was invited to stay at a stately home in Herefordshire for the weekend, during which the principle players - my brother, his first wife, his current, Russian wife, myself, Susan, my nephew, his wife, my son and daughter - were permanently wired while the rest were menaced with mikes. Three camera crews filmed absolutely everything, especially the various exchanges between family members!” A huge 170 hours of material were canned, which the producer reduced to a one-hour programme. Toby and Susan moved to Spain in 1998 as they were fed up with Britain being ruled under the leadership of Tony Blair. They now live a finca in Real Alto, Velez Malaga. So don’t forget to tune in!

spanish Foods Let’s C what Spanish foods and drinks I can think of beginning with the letter C!

Calamares – Squids to you! These are a typical dish of chiringuitos. They come fried.

Churros – These long doughnut-like sweet treats aren’t the healthiest way to start the day, but nevertheless they’re one of the most popular Spanish breakfasts. They’re eaten dipped in sugar, or a cup of gloopy chocolate. If you haven’t yet tried them then you simply must, but try not to become addicted!

Chanquetes – These little fishes are similar to white bait and again (not surprisingly) they are served fried and more often than not covered in batter. If you look closely you can see their little black eyes. I remember the first plate I ate had me feeling ill for days after. The thought of hundreds of eyes peering around my stomach didn’t agree!

Cerveza – This is one of those words which most British people know, simply because it is means ‘beer’. I often cringe as I hear the dreadful attempts at pronunciation. A ‘tubo’ is a tall thin glass of beer. Cerezas – Cherries can usually be found on supermarket shelves in the middle of summer. They’re always so juicy here! Cola Cao – This is the Spanish brand of hot chocolate and what people ask for in cafeterias. It is made with milk and is great for a pre-bedtime drink. Café con Leche – This is coffee with milk and is the most common way of drinking it. If you like your coffee a little less potent ask for ‘nube’ (cloudy) or even weaker ‘sombra’ (shadey).

Chorizo – Spicy sausage is a real hit here in Spain. It tastes real good and is a likely component of dishes such as migas. Those obvious fatty parts put me off indulging too often though… Conejo – Better known as bunny rabbit. I was alarmed the first time I realised that my paella contained chunks of it. I had believed I was eating chicken. If only they knew that we keep them as pets in the UK! Caramelos – Every kids favourite – sweeties! On Three King’s Day tonnes of them get thrown from carriages during a special procession. If you can be bothered it’s not difficult to collect bags of them!

Book release Vapour Trails in the Blue – available at Bookworld in El Ingenio Centro Comercial, Velez Malaga English artist Lyle Heaphy returns to Tolmuner on the Costa del Sol, full of good intentions about being productive as an artist, but he is soon seduced back into a hedonistic lifestyle with his friends, culminating in a riotous time being had by all at the town’s annual San Isidro’s day celebrations. The death of two friends, one possibly murdered, prompts Lyle into fleeing Tolmuner with the beautiful Cheryl and comical, hopeless Percy Sandling, with the idea of going with them to America to live. Travelling through Spain in an old van, the three chance upon a remote village which they discover is being inhabited by a leper colony. After staying there for a while (paradoxically, recovering their health there) the three then head for Pamplona, to its famous San Firmin “running of the bulls” fiesta in July and a show-down with Cheryl’s ex-lover. The author, Mark le Claire was born in Peterborough in 1951 and went to Stourbridge Art College. After some years spent travelling and doing a variety of jobs from dish washing to sign writing he became a painter, having one man exhibitions at the Barbican Centre, London, the Museum Voor Schone Kunsten, Ostend, and the Cissie Peltz Gallery, Milwaukee among others. Exhibiting in many group exhibitions (including the 1992 Gibraltar Open Art Exhibition, where he won first prize) he has work represented in numerous private and public collections in England and abroad. Subsidising his income in recent years with a carpet and upholstery cleaning business, he began writing fiction after moving to Spain in 1989.

Dentist’s world Patient to dentist: how much to straighten my teeth? Dentist: 4000€ Dentist: where are you going? Patient: to the plastic surgeon to get my jaw straightened. As a semi retired British dentist practising in Spain I feel no obligation to respect professional "omerta ". So I have no qualms in telling patients exactly how it is. The press has exposed some NHS dentist are earning 300k p.a. so I am often asked "What are you doing here?" We all know quality of life has no price. It dosn’t cost much to live but costs a lot to find that out. As they are paid by piecework those dentists must be working a lot faster than those racehorses that whisked me around the racetracks of the UK. In my former life as a jockey I was christened Dr. Death; only because of my raceriding tactics I hasten to add. I would be a bit concerned about anyone who liked going to the dentist but trusting your dentist to use his skill and training to help you maintain a healthy mouth is a basic necessity, surely. To diagnose the problems and recommend a treatment plan not motivated by money. I am seeing many Brits here who have conscientiously been going for their check ups and scale and polish in the UK, mainly on the NHS. I do not think it necessary to visit the dentist in such a way just as going only when you are in pain is also dumb. A brush whizzing around on a drill is almost useless especially as I have yet to find anyone who knows how to brush correctly and almost everyone has vary-

ing degrees of gum desease. This varies from occasional bleeding gums to chronic infection and receeding gums. What amazes me is that generally these patients tell me that no dentist has paid much attention to this before and they certainly have not discussed very much if anything with their dentist. They just let him get on with it. It’s almost as if they have gone for a meeting with the pope and they must know their place. Its your health your putting into another’s hands. Extensive treatments including implants, crowns and bridges, etc. are much cheaper here than the UK so your money is hugely welcome. Implants are not for everyone. Get a proper diagnosis. My wife Likes Expensive things My wife likes expensive and attractive things. She can’t help it. She just does. Not for her, the cheap and shoddy, and not by choice either, but when she goes shopping the items that invariably catch her eye and imagination are always the best brands, the best quality – and the most expensive! Whether it be clothing, handbags, shoes, mobile phones, wristwatches or cars she always wants the best, which is probably why being married to me she does not own too many items in this bracket. I was not surprised therefore when we were looking for a central heating system capable of keeping our home warm against the bitter cold experienced during the winter of 2007 – 2008. My wife found one that was incredibly attractive, totally versatile, of superb quality and no doubt very expensive. But we would not know how expensive until the company concerned had assessed our heating needs. A very pleasant representative came to our home and clearly explained how this technology worked and provided us with a written quotation. There was no sales pitch, just simple, friendly professionalism with a written quotation which left us feeling satisfied and confident that this winter (2008 – 2009) we would remain warm. Against all expectations the entire system to completely heat our home was not nearly as expensive as feared, and considerably less than installing gas or oil central heating with radiators. This puts into perspective the excellent value of the system we had chosen, particularly when you take into account the comparatively low running costs involved. (on this occasion my wife had actually found something that was economical to 82

run)! As an alternative to full installation the manufacturers would have been equally delighted to provide a quotation for partially heating our home. This would have allowed us to start small and add on at a later date. How flexible is that? As you have no doubt guessed we bought this heating system for our entire home and we’ll be forever happy that we did. It kept us incredibly warm and comfortable for the entire winter and it will do so again this year. It’s really nice to come across a company which cares for its clients, does not employ sales people, and goes out of its way to be accommodating. If like us you wish to enjoy a nice warm winter indoors, we recommend that you have a look at Redwell’s advert on page 108

Film review Final Destination Four Bloody hell! Apologies for swearing but I couldn’t think of a more apt two words to start this review. Also, see it as a warning. If you don’t like seeing blood and guts oozing out of bodies, heads being chopped off, or bodies being sliced in half, then this film isn’t for you (it wasn’t for me either, but at least I could shut my eyes during the gruesome parts). If you’ve seen Final Destination one, two and three then you’ll know what to expect from the latest sequel. It begins with the main character having a strong premonition of death, during a racing car event. He encourages his friends and girlfriend to leave just in the nick of time, before they are turned into a bloody pulp. Some of the other spectators cotton on to the conversation and they leave too. However following the incident, one by one, these people fall victim to death, all in totally hideous ways. The four main characters know their times are creeping up and they each have their wits about them as they muscle through the days. The cheating boyfriend of one gets what he deserves when he perils in a swimming pool. The others are able to escape death, no matter how many times it tries to get them. Well, for a while anyway… This film is as predictable as the others in the franchise and the annoying humour stitched in to each scene is particularly off-putting. But, on the other hand it does have you sitting on the edge of your seat, wondering when the next horrific death scene is going to arrive. And just remember, in death there are no accidents, no coincidences, no mishaps and no escapes. Star Rating - */***** (give us something original, please!!) 84

No hands® With so many hours sat at the computer screen of late and my recent time on the tennis court in attempt to keep fit, I couldn’t help but notice my neck and back had become even stiffer than usual.. Having read, some time ago, about the revolutionary NO HANDS® massage offered by Evolucion beauty salon in la Herradura, I decided to see for myself what it was all about... My last experience with massage came on a holiday in Goa some years back. a few dollars gave me half an hour with one of the many beach tout ‘massuers’ that ply their trade on the glorious beaches. Thirty minutes later I felt ok, later that night I felt like I had done a few rounds with Giant Haystacks. It took some time to recover from that experience so I must admit I was a little apprehensive about my session with Claire in Evolucion. I was however reassured by the fact that Clare has been personally taught by Gerry Pyves, the founder of the NO HANDS® Massage. A technique discovered in 1987, that has since become World renowned and the fastest growing massage formula on the planet today. Immediately I entered I was reassured by Claires’ professionalism, even more so by the short form I had to fill out for health and safety purposes, mainly to confirm I had no health issues that would make massage innappropriate and also to ensure I was not allergic to any of the ingredients used in the massage oils that were to be used. Once the formalties were cleared it was time for the NO HANDS® massage. My first thoughts were that it was nothing like I had expected. The first ten minutes I tried to concentrate on my breathing, as Claire had instructed so that I could get

the maximum benefits. It wasn’t long afterwards that I felt that I had switched off and was beginning to totally relax. I eventually lost all conception of time as the massage really started to take hold. Bliss. I had not expected to leave the Evolucion salon feeling thoroughly relaxed and recharged. My stresses had been forgotton and I felt my energy levels had been given a boost too. Perhaps my biggest surprise was that I felt a kind of “calm and energy” for days after. Having read some more on the NO HANDS® massage I have learnt that repetition is when the effects really start to kick in. With just one session having such a profound effect I am eagerly anticipating my return!

Linda, Geoff and their team at Arkwrights Puente don Manuel have chosen to support once again the children in El Ciudad de los Ninos in Malaga. This home provides holistic care for approximately 55 residential children whose ages range from 4 – 18 years of age. This year we have a greater number of boys between the ages of 13 – 18. And, although it is always nice, and easier to buy for the younger members the older ones look forward to and enjoy receiving their presents too. It will probably be all they receive for Christmas unlike our own children. Please pop in and donate a gift, wrapped and clearly stated what age and sex the gift is aimed for.

Make a less fortunate child smile this Christmas. So lets all club together and let these unfortunate children “live” a little as well.

Bacon:( I never realised the real danger of reusing bacon grease... until now. Do you use bacon grease? We were raised on bacon grease (lard) as kids and even into adulthood. I will never use it again. I just threw out my last 2 tbsp of bacon grease! I hope you will throw yours away whenever you fry bacon from now on. It seems as though nothing is safe to eat anymore. Cooking with bacon grease. This is what happens when you keep cooking with bacon grease.

It could happen to you... Bacon fat will make your feet feel small!

Jokes he he he :-)

hey Diddle riddle

A man checks into a hotel in Auckland while on a business trip and was a bit lonely. He thought of one of those girls you see advertised in phoneboxes when you're calling for a taxi. He popped into a phonebox in Albert Street near the hotel and found an ad for a girl calling herself Erogonique, a lovely girl, bending over in the photo. She had all the right curves in all the right places, beautiful long wavy hair, long graceful legs...... well, you get the picture! He copied the phone number and returned to his hotel. When back in the room he figures, what the hell, give her a call. 'Hello,' the woman says. God, she sounded sexy. 'Hi, I hear you give a great massage and I'd like you to come to my room and give me one..No, wait, I should be straight with you. I'm in town all alone and what I really want is sex. I want it hard, I want it hot, and I want it now. Bring implements, toys, rubber, leather, whips, everything you've got in your bag of tricks. Tie me up, cover me in chocolate syrup and whipped cream, anything you want! Now, how does that sound?' She says, 'That sounds fantastic, but you need to press 1 for an outside line.' It took three hours for him to get the courage to checkout next morning. ---------------------------------------------------A man was lying in bed with his new girlfriend. After having great sex ... She spent the next hour just rubbing his testicles ... Something she just loved to do. As he was enjoying it, he turned and asked her, "Why do you love doing that?" Because ... She Replied ... "I Really Miss Mine" ---------------------------------------------------Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, 'Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!' Miraculously, a parking place appeared. Paddy looked up again and said, 'Never mind, I found one.'

1. There were three guys that died on Christmas Day. They were sent to heaven, but only could enter if they each brought one thing that represented Christmas. The first guy brought a stocking, and god let him in. The second guy brought a ornament, and god let him in also. The third guy brought him a pair of underwear. All three of their spirits rested in heaven. How is the third guy in heaven?

3. Once there was a boy and he got a new hula hoop for Christmas. If it didn’t fit over his head and it didn’t fit over his feet and he didn’t break, it how did he get it on his waist? 4. Just before Christmas, there was an honest politician, a kind lawyer and Santa Claus travelling in a lift of a very posh hotel. Just before the doors opened they all noticed a 5€ note lying on the floor. Which one picked it up and why? get Quizical answers 1) Busy Lizzie, 2) Window cleaning, 3) 20, 4) Lace, 5) Honshu, 6) Katmandu, 7) 7, 8) A Skulk, 9) Old Betsy, 10) The Kinks. hey Diddle riddle answers 1) 1. When god asked what a pair of underwear had to do with Christmas, the guy replied "Their Carol's", 2) He was Jewish, 3) It was all just a dream, 4) Santa of course, the other two don't exist!

2. A boy walks downstairs on Christmas morning in his foster parents house (the foster parents are rich). They have a 50 foot Christmas tree outside, and the floor is an ocean of presents. There is a goldplatinum-diamond statue of Jesus, and huge expensive Christmas decor. The foster parents spent all of their holiday money on Christmas presents, decor, tree, lights and much more. Why was the kid upset?
