I hope you have all enjoyed a beautiful summer in Spain. I suppose now, at the beginning of September, the crowds of people are starting to dissipate and life is getting back to normality for many of you. Life in the USA this last month has been pretty full-on and the raging fires, which caused havoc across the south coast of Spain in 2012, seem to be following me! This summer I’m across the pond, in a place called Sun Valley, Idaho, USA and I’m having to confine myself to indoors, where fortunately we have an air filter system. Otherwise, the smoke might well cause us breathing problems. Thousands of tourists flock to this region every year to enjoy the sunshine and to go hiking on one of the many trails. However, hiking trails are being closed left, right and centre, and the sunshine is hidden beyond a grey blanket of smoke covering the town. There are five fires burning the landscape at the moment, with a huge team of firefighters battling to keep them all under control. Join me in sending Light to all those who have been affected by the fires and their aftermath of destruction. Not wishing to hang around in these conditions, tomorrow I’m going to Los Angeles for a week or so, driving there and stopping in the state of Oregan for a couple of days on the way back. It’s just as well because I could use a holiday and thankfully the weather is amazing in LA at this time of the year, so hopefully there’ll be lots of sunshine to enjoy.

The Birds A 69-year-old woman has been terrorised by a flock of seagulls which swoops down on her every time she leaves her house. Penny Freeman, from Bridlington, East Yorkshire, was left facing the consequences after beginning to put food out in the garden for small birds. She was soon swamped by a large colony of ravenous seagulls. The problem then escalated when one of their eggs fell from a nest and the adults constantly guarded it. Ms Freeman told The Sun: "It was terrifying. I couldn't leave the house and I felt like a prisoner. The birds were very threatening - they're like lizards." Feeling Peckish? Designer Chris Godfrey has created the All in One meal in a tin, giving everyone the chance to eat like royalty. De Cotta Law Divorcing in the English courts using a Spanish based law firm and an English barrister We are often asked whether a couple can choose which country to divorce in and where they will have the greater economic advantage. With the new European regulations a “first come, first served” approach has been taken. A lot has been written in the news about wealthy individuals - forum shopping – that is looking for the best country to take the action. Where there is considerable wealth this is often thought to be England. One successful London case went to the Supreme Court and involved a wealthy individual who used a network of companies to try and avoid a payment to his wife. The Supreme Court decided in favour of the wife in this case. However a very different case will have set alarm bells ringing among English divorce lawyers as a husband’s declared dislike of the English weather has prevented his wife from making claims against property he has in England! The husband says he intends to remain in Spain although his wife presented evidence that he was less than complimentary about Spain when they were together. If there is a divorce in Spain the door can remain open in England under specific provisions which allow someone to make a financial application in England after a foreign divorce. You have to prove that the financial matters have not been properly dealt with and there are assets in England such as property, monies or pensions. One option is to instruct a barrister in England who can advise you and act for you. Barristers will be familiar with the decisions being made in the Family courts so can help in avoiding unnecessary expense by seeking a negotiated

agreement if that is in your best interests. They can also help to ensure that you get disclosure of the true financial situation of the other party. This can be very important in pension cases for UK spouses. Using the relatively new Barrister’s Public Access scheme and with the help of an instructing firm, such as De Cotta Law, based in Spain you can avoid the potentially higher cost of using a UK solicitor’s firm and would only need to travel to the UK when a court hearing is required. Ticks Bought to us by Tina from Happy Hounds. Ticks are parasitic arthropods that feed on the blood of their hosts. They are attracted to warmth and motion, often seeking out mammals – including dogs. Ticks tend to hide out in tall grass or plants in wooded areas, waiting for prospective hosts. Once a host is found, the tick climbs on and attaches its mouth parts into the skin, beginning the blood meal. Once locked in place, the tick will not detach until its meal is complete. It may continue to feed for several hours or days, depending on the type of tick. On dogs, ticks often attach themselves in crevices and/or areas with little or no hair – typically in and around the ears, the areas where the insides of the legs meet the body, between the toes and within skin folds. Most species of ticks go through four life stages eggs, larvae, nymphs and adults. All stages beyond eggs will attach to a host for a blood meal (and must do so in order to mature). Depending on species, the life span of a tick can be several months to years, and female adults can lay hundreds to thousands of eggs at a time. The Dangers of Ticks Though they are known vectors of disease, not all ticks transmit disease – in fact, many ticks do not even carry diseases. However, the threat of disease is always present where ticks are concerned, and these risks should always be taken seriously. Most tick-borne diseases will take several hours to transmit to a host, so the sooner a tick is located and removed, the lower the risk of disease. The symptoms of most tick-borne diseases include fever and lethargy, though some can also cause weakness, lameness, joint swelling and/or anaemia. Signs may take days, weeks or months to appear. Some ticks can cause a temporary condition called “tick paralysis,” which is manifested by a gradual onset of difficulty in walking which may develop into paralysis. These signs typically begin to resolve after the tick is removed. If you notice these or any other signs of illness in your dog, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible so that proper test-

ing and necessary treatments can begin. The following are some of the most common tickborne diseases: Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis. You should check your dog for ticks after coming in from the outdoors, especially if he has been in a long grass area. Ticks should be safely removed and dogs watched for signs of tick-borne illnesses. All dogs should be treated with some form of tick prevention. Three Cautionary Tales Following on from last month about how people try to cheat us all. Senario two A man at a local restaurant paid for his meal with his credit card. The bill for the meal came, he signed it and the waitress folded the receipt and passed the credit card along. Usually, he would just take it and place it in his wallet or pocket. Funny enough, though, he actually took a look at the card and, lo and behold, it was the expired card of another person. He called the waitress and she looked perplexed. She took it back, apologised, and hurried back to the counter under the watchful eye of the man. All the waitress did while walking to the counter

was wave the wrong expired card to the counter cashier, and the counter cashier immediately looked down and took out the real card. No exchange of words --- nothing! She took it and came back to the man with an apology. Verdict: Make sure the credit cards in your wallet are yours. Check the name on the card every time you sign for something and/or the card is taken away for even a short period of time. better still accompany it. Many people just take back the credit card without even looking at it, 'assuming' that it has to be theirs. Develop the habit of checking your credit card each time it is returned to you after a transaction. Keep your eyes peeled for senario three next month

New Mum In Town - It’s Peppa Time So, it's August and España is crazy busy and crazy hot. Baby girl and I escaped the chaos and went to the UK! What a difference...rain! I had forgotten about that, and cloud with patchy sun -- strangely enough, though, I loved it and very much enjoyed the break from the intense heat. Going out without the shiny, sweaty look was also a bonus. Jazmin was abs o l u t e l y awesome...she was perfect on the plane, and she was perfect at the B&B. She was eating well, sharing, talking more English and (wait for it) sleeping through! YES!! She was the centre of attention at the B&B (surprise surprise), and didn't half revel in it haha! There was another little baby staying at the B&B but Jazmin adored him. Her favourite game was to say hello/bye bye to all the guests and hand them all a tourist leaflet - just in case they were stuck for ideas on what to do. The number one leaflet was Paultons Park/Peppa Pig theme park.UK exclusive! It was non-stop. We went dog walking (Jazmin and Rusty the Labrador, my friend's pooch, became besties); park playing, friend-making, family visiting, duck feeding, laughing and generally taking each day as it came -- very unlike me. However, we did make a special effort to visit Miss Peppa Pig at Peppa Pig world. We went with Jazmin's little cousin who is the same age... WOWSERS! And that was just Mummy's reaction. The look on the babies’ faces when they realised where they were was priceless...que emocional; what excitement. I don't think baby girl could quite believe it. It was worth every penny. Just like Christmas Day. We had a brilliant day and even met Peppa and George in person! The sun was out too, so we got to splash around in the pool and Miss J got to show off her new Peppa swimming costume. The place is just like the cartoon -- excellent. I thoroughly recommend this if your little kiddies

love Peppa Pig; it's a must. England was Peppa mad, but Jazmin also developed a love for In the Nightgarden...I am now an expert. Funny how motherhood really does change everything. I used to listen to soul/r&b, but now my IPod is full of children's top 100 nursery rhymes. I used to read novels; now I read baby peek-a-boo books....but this is what I wouldn't change for anything in the world. Just amazing, and I can't believe that she is 19 months! Seeing my little girl so so happy and bubbly just melts my heart. Her big cheeky grin makes everything worthwhile, and the sleepless nights are forgotten...almost. Adios ‘til next month!

Although only four feet high, the pineapple plant grows a powerful fruit. This tropical plant, native to South America but now found in warm places around the world, contains a special enzyme which is claimed to have many health benefits. Pineapple is a special piece of the puzzle in putting together your ideal whole foods, plant-based diet. Bromelain is an enzyme which distinguishes pineapples from all other fruits. This enzyme, which your body can absorb intact, has unique and powerful effects to support your health. To reap the advantages of bromelain, be sure to eat pineapple raw. Cooking or canning destroys this enzyme. An electric knife makes cutting whole pineapple a breeze, or you can buy fresh fruit that is already cut into chunks. Bromelain has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects which counter a range of chronic diseases and infections. Bromelain has been used to reduce inflammation in arthritis, sinusitis, inflammatory bowel disease, sports injuries, trauma, burns, prostatitis, and swelling after surgery. This enzyme may aid in reducing the effects of toxic organisms in your intestines as well as help antibiotics to work more effectively when you need

to take them. Bromelain works to destroy cancer cells. In fact,bromelain is already used by some clinicians as part of the chemotherapy process. A 2011 study in the peer-reviewed journal Molecular Carcinogenesis found that bromelain was effective in suppressing the growth of two kinds of human cancer cells, including melanoma cells. A 2010 study in the journal BioFactors showed that bromelain delayed growth and eventually induced the death of human breast cancer cells. Pineapple is brimming with nutrients in addition to bromelin. This whole food is dense with fibre, vitamin C and phytochemicals -- beneficial nutrients found only in plants. These antioxidants fight the free radicals that can damage your cells and cause disease. It is also very effective for problems related to kidneys and also urinary problems. Helping Axarquia The Spanish tax authority is currently implementing a campaign throughout Spain against all pensioners who receive a pension from a foreign country - OECD countries. Notifications have been served by the Spanish Tax Office demanding the payment of taxes on foreign pensions which have not been declared for Spanish income tax purposes. Furthermore, these taxpayers will also be faced with a corresponding tax penalty. In general terms, Spanish law on income tax states that if an individual is a fiscal resident in Spain, he or she should declare any income received from any part of the world. However, there are exceptions to this and they are regulated by agreements in order to avoid international double taxation. In Spain, taxpayers are liable for income tax payment when their income earned from personal work (salary and pension) exceeds 22,000 euros per year gross, when paid by a

single employer, institution or company. This threshold is reduced to 11,200 euros when the income comes from more than source, or if it does come from a single source but no tax has been withheld. Therefore, the threshold for payment of tax on foreign pensions is fixed at 11,200 euros, although Government pensions are exempt from these regulations. At 689 metres above sea level we discover Sedella, so named, according to the town hall website, because Queen Isabella when told of the fight between Christians and Muslims at an area known as Arroyo de la Matanza said, Sé de ella (I know about her) At such an altitude you can be sure of magnificent views and in fact on clear days you can even see the Atlas Mountains! Closer to home are the mountains of Bentomiz and the Sierra Tejeda. To get to Sedella the best route by car is either via Canillas de Aceituno or from the autovia turn off at Algarrobo and drive inland past Sayalonga, turn left for Archez, drive over the bridge and then turn right following signs for Salares and Sedella. Having arrived at Sedella, continue driving as if going on to Canillas de Aceituno and park the car where you can by the last entrance to the village, one

of the first places of interest is the public laundry or wash house situated between three green trimmed arches, which be-fore the invention of washing machines was in constant use by the towns women. Onwards and upwards to the main square and the most unique building in town, the Casa del Torreón or Tower House, Mudéjar in origin and the former home of the Mayor of Donceles, Lord of Sedella, it was built in the 16th century in the Mudéjar style over a quadrangular floor plan. The tower has twin arches on Renaissance columns with a beam supported hip roof. Majestically sitting at highest point in the village up a flight of 12 steps is the church of San Andrés with its square two part tower and octagonal belfry, the only vestige of the original 16th century building. If the climb up has made you thirsty you can take a libation in the Bar just below the church. Like many Axarquía villages Sedella suffered in the earthquake of 1884 but luckily for the inhabitants only the buildings were damaged and there was no loss of life.

My friend once told me a beautiful story to illustrate the fact that we are not the doers. A friend of hers who studied Siddha Yoga was a hat-maker. She had a shop full of the most extravagant and gorgeous hats, however she rarely sold one and she was having difficulty paying the bills. Feeling frustrated and armed with the wisdom that her current mindset wouldn’t get her anywhere, she decided to spend some time away from her hat business and redirect her attention inside. She flew to India and spent a week at an ashram, meditating, chanting, getting out of her head and into her heart space. After the week was up she felt much better, completely free of any thoughts of frustration concerning her hat business. As she got on the plane back to London, she sat down and moments later a middle aged lady sat next to her. They smiled at each other and introduced themselves. “What do you do?” the hatmaker asked. The lady looked her in the eyes and said, “I sell hats. How about you?” And so the relationship formed and from that day on, through her new connection, the hat-maker sold hundreds of hats and made a very good living. If you think back, you’ll probably find similar examples in your own life. For me, when I got outside of my head concerning The Light and went to visit a friend in the UK who I hadn’t seen for three years, I received two emails inviting me to come and speak at different events. I didn’t realise how much power these invitations held at that time, however, I now see that it was God’s way of pointing me in the right direction for The Light and future Light books.

Recipe Of The Month Wild rice with olives and pine nuts This is quite an exotic-looking salad, perfect to serve at a summer barbeque. Serves 6 50g/2oz wild rice 225g/8oz long grain rice 4 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp red wine vinegar Salt and pepper 50g/2oz pine nuts 1 clove garlic, crushed 75g/3oz pitted black olives finely chopped 2 tbsp chopped chives Juice and zest of a lemon Method: 1. Cook the rice in lots of boiling water according to the packet instructions. 2. When cooked, drain the rice & while it is still hot add 1 tablespoon each of oil & the red wine vinegar, season with salt & pepper to taste. 3. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and cook the pine nuts until they begin to colour. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute. Pour over the rice. 4. Add the olives, chives and lemon zest and juice. Chill to serve.

even when they are on land. Mudskippers raise the fins on their backs to communicate with each other. Mudskippers and gobies belong to one of the largest families of fishes, the Gobiidae. Los Romanes Swimming Pool Written by Heather L Sheldon, from Sheffield, UK On my recent annual summer holiday to my parents’ house at La Vinuela, we stumbled across a fantastic doorstep find – an enormous swimming pool and babypool in the neighbouring village of Los Romanes. Temporarily closed in 2010 whilst work was carried out to redirect an overhanging electrical line, the new facility has recently re-opened with little ─ if any ─ advertising. The facility is known presently through word-of-mouth. The swimming pool is open throughout July to September, daily from 12 - 7pm. We noticed the pool does not get busy until 4pm on most days, so until then, we had our own private pools! There is a life guard in attendance at all times. Residents of La Vinuela and their guests are able to purchase discounted tickets from the town hall. Otherwise, tickets for adults are 3 euros and children over three years of age are 2 euros. Tickets can be purchased from the lifeguard. Los Romanes pool offers swimming lessons, a kiosk to purchase ice creams and drinks (although this did not seem to open until late afternoon), changing facilities, showers and toilets, but no shade or sun loungers. Limited parking is available at the front of the pool. After speaking with Moses from the La Vinuela town hall, he assures me full details about the pool will shortly appear on the town website: www.lavinuela.es/es or he can be contacted by telephone: 952 519 002. The pool is under no threat of closure, he confirmed, but he acknowledged more advertising needs to be done to highlight this fantastic ─ yet inexpensive ─ facility.

Jokes h a h a :) Two priests decided to go to Hawaii on vacation. They were determined to make this a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify them as clergy. As soon as the plane landed they headed for a store and bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc. The next morning they went to the beachdressed in their 'tourist' garb.
