Welcome everyone to the October edition of The Sentinella Axarquia Edition. Summer has now passed — far too quickly for my liking! — and it seems like a distant memory. The kids are all back at school, the streets are emptier, parking is easy again, the mornings are cooler and wait for it... Halloween is just around the corner!

Before I continue, I must comment on Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, watched by millions around the world. She reigned for 70 years, which is a unique milestone in itself, let alone living until the grand age of 96 — still working until two days before her death. She devoted her entire life to her country and the Commonwealth. She was a truly amazing person and thoroughly deserved the magnificent send-off she was given… I suspect many a tear was shed in several countries. RIP Your Majesty.

So on to more cheerful things. October is a great month; the weather becomes much more tolerable as although it´s starting to get a little chilly in the mornings and again, once the sun sets, it`s still beautiful enough to spend the day on the beach, sunbathe, take a boat trip, horse ride, go for a walk, ride a bike and enjoy alfresco dining — everything was unbearable to enjoy properly during the height of the summer months. There are still lots of events happening in October in the lovely Axarquia area, two Oktoberfest´s, one in Algarrobo Costa and the other in Torre del Mar, sadly both are on the same days, the 8th & 9th October. If art is more your thing, for the sixth consecutive year the Art Route of Frigiliana takes place in one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. All Trussed up A woman called Liz Trussell, who appears to have nabbed the Twitter handle @LizTruss before the new Conservative leader, has been sending cheeky replies to people who think she's Britain's new prime minister.

The Swedish prime minister was one who messaged the wrong Liz.

Magdalena Andersson swiftly deleted her post, but not before Ms Trussell expressed a willingness to meet.

She even suggested the Scandinavian leader should bring a delicacy from her home nation, and wrote: ‘Looking forward to a visit soon! Get the meatballs ready!’

What a cheek

Coventry police have released a wanted appeal with a difference, as one of the thieves has not shown his face in CCTV footage.

Instead, officers are hoping he might be identified by a different aspect of his appearance – due to his ‘bare-faced cheek’.

They shared CCTV footage of two men pinching tools from a nearby van, as part of a spate of similar incidents in Coventry.

As one of them gets to work stealing the items worth around £600 from a vehicle after smashing its window, the other decided to moon witnesses from his getaway car.

The thieves are thought to be linked to a wider group that has targeted more than 40 tradespeople across Coventry in recent weeks using vehicles on cloned registration plates.

Coventry Police Detective Inspector Stew Lewis said of the mooning thief: ‘We’ve had a bit of fun with the video, but these offences are no laughing matter. These brazen thieves have stolen tools worth thousands of pounds; tradespeople have been left out of pocket and badly inconvenienced.

‘They’ve also brandished crowbars and metal batons during some of the thefts and we’re concerned they may be prepared to use violence.’

Human sacrifice?

A terrified festival-goer said he was being offered as a human sacrifice to Mother Earth after he woke up trapped in a coffin following a drinking binge.

Víctor Hugo Mica Alvarez, 30, smashed his way out of the casket in Achacachi, which is about 50 miles from where he passed out in the city of El Alto, Bolivia.

He’d been drinking heavily the night before, at the opening of the Mother Earth festival –where indigenous people offer everything from live animals and sheep foetuses to sweets and coca leaves for the goddess, who they believe ‘opens her mouth’ for offerings in August.

Victor claims he was among the human sacrifices some fear are still offered in ancient-style rituals to satisfy her. While covered in mud and concrete after his apparent escape, he told local media: ‘Last night was the pre-entry of the festival, we went dancing. And afterwards I don’t remember. Thankfully, I was able to break a pane of glass in the coffin and was able to get out.’

Beer

Beer contains female hormones! Yes, that's right, FEMALE hormones!

Last month, Montreal University and scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption.

The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 glasses of beer within a one (1) hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these men:-

1. Argued over nothing.

2. Refused to apologise when obviously wrong.

3. Gained weight.

4. Talked excessively without making sense.

5. Became overly emotional

6. Couldn't drive.

7. Failed to think rationally, and,

8. Had to sit down while urinating.

Property Tax For Non-Resident Homeowners In Spain - Modelo 210

Non-resident property tax, known as Modelo 210, needs to be paid annually by non-resident property owners in Spain. You are a non-resident if you do not have residencia in Spain or if you live for more than 183 days outside of Spain. All nationalities need to pay the tax – both EU and non-EU residents.

This tax needs to be paid each year you own the property and must be paid by 31 December the following year. For example, the Modelo 210 property tax for 2021 needs to be paid on or before 31 December 2022. The tax is payable by each owner of the property - so if there are two owners of the property each owner must pay 50% of the tax due.

The amount due is calculated based upon a percentage of the Catastral value of your property - there are different rates for EU and non-EU residents. It still needs to be paid even if you do not receive rental income from your Spanish property.

Non-resident property owners in Spain

If a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement.

Mouse balls are now available as FRU (Field Replacement Units). Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel.

Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the

manufacturer of the mouse.

Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop off method. Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist off method.

Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge.

Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately.

It is recommended that each person have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction.

Any customer missing his balls should contact the local personnel in charge of removing and replacing these necessary items.

MANDATORY SPANISH DRIVING LICENCE

New regulations governing the mandatory issue of Spanish driving licences for British citizens is an issue that’s causing concern for some of our English expatriate customers.

AUTOMATIC LICENCE EXPIRY AFTER 30 APRIL 2022

As of December 31st 2020, the UK ceased to belong to the European Union, and regulations that allowed driving in Spain, with a British driving licence, ceased to be applicable.

UK issued driving licenses were only authorised to drive in Spain until April 30th 2022, and are now not valid. All existing agreements on highway regulations that protect the Member States of the European Union have ceased to be valid and applicable. However, those British drivers who do not have their main residence in Spain and travel for periods of less than six months (tourist type), may continue to drive in Spain, during that period, with their original permit.

As from 2nd June 2022 Agnes and Jörg opened their new physiotherapy practice in Torre del Mar, Calle Levante, 29, located in the road in front of the ´blue parking´ car parks at the end of El Copo. We spoke to Agnes to find out how they ended up in the wonderful Torre del Mar.

“We are originally from the North of Germany, it was far too cold and grey for us there so my husband Jörg and I moved back to Spain. We searched for a long time and after weighing up all of our options, we decided on the most beautiful place on the Costa del Sol: Torre del Mar.”

“30 years ago I completed my training as a physiotherapist in Germany. After that, I went on to qualify as a manual therapist and chiropractor. I soon began to realise that there are many people with jaw problems, which led me to further training in CMD (Cranio-Mandibular Dysfunction), as well as in organic and cranio-sacral parts of the body. I decided to combine all these areas and train in oesteopathy. And in order to be able to work freely without a doctor’s prescription, I then completed the further training as a physiotherapeutic non-medical practitioner.”

“My husband realised he could work better in Spain as a diving instructor, so in 1999 we went to Catalonia. We worked in Empuriabrava near Roses until 2012. Between us we speak four languages, Spanish, English, German and French and

working in four languages is a lot of fun and a great challenge. Sadly, we had to move back to Germany for family reasons, immediately I opened my own practice there and, together with Jörg on reception, ran it until 2020. However, anyone who has already experienced the Spanish warmth and friendliness starts to miss Spain and, of course, the climate. After returning to Spain and with one year of renovation work now finished, our practice is ready in our own house.

Whether you’re normally a fan of musical films or not, the recently released biopic of the legend known as The King takes the genre to a whole new level.

As well as the obligatory songs, there are Oscar-worthy acting performances from Austin Butler as Elvis himself, and movie legend Tom Hanks who brings the singer’s

lifelong agent and promoter Colonel Tom Parker to life with uncanny insight. Butler might not look like the image of Elvis, but within a few minutes he is totally believable in the role and in the film, Butler’s voice was blended with the real Presley’s for many of the songs.

Hanks brings a whole new dimension to the usual perception of Col Parker, who not only ruled The King’s career, but also his life. “Without me there would be no Elvis Presley,” he maintained. Parker — in actual fact a Dutch-born showman and hustler called Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk — cast himself as Presley’s closest confidant and was rewarded with 50% of the megastar’s profits whilst wielding 100% control.

This is an enthralling, entertaining, nostalgic, beautifully acted and revealing film — one definitely not to be missed.

I am a British resident and I own Spanish property. Should I gift it to my children during my lifetime?

If you gift Spanish property to your children there are various things that one needs to think about. What tax you will pay tends to be at the top of one´s list.

As a Spanish non-tax resident, regardless of whether you sell or gift your property, you will need to account for 19% Spanish Capital Gains tax (CGT). A capital gain is calculated by taking the sale price and deducting the purchase price and related fees and costs. In addition to the 19% CGT, one needs to pay plusvalía. Plusvalía is essentially a municipal CGT.

If you gift your property during your lifetime, you will also need to account for lifetime inheritance tax (IHT) in Spain, often referred to as a “donación” in Spanish. This is generally very low in Andalusia as there is a 99% exemption when gifting to children. There is a series of formalities to follow which we can help with.

This is only part of the picture for British residents, in that British residents need to also consider their potential obligations and tax liabilities in the UK.

UK CGT is ordinarily charged at either 18% or 28% on second residential property, depending on whether the person is a basic or a higher rate income taxpayer. An individual will normally be given credit for the Capital Gains tax paid in Spain to avoid double taxation.

One would not have to pay any lifetime inheritance tax in the UK and this would be what is referred to as a Potentially Exempt Transfer (PET). Provided that you live for seven years after the gift, it would not fall into your estate for the purposes of calculating UK IHT.

UK IHT at death, above applicable exemptions, is charged at 40% and 36%.

Chris Eubank, 56, suffered an embarrassing mishap as he ran over his designer luggage while driving his 2.6 tonne Rolls Royce Phantom convertible in London recently.

The former professional boxer, 56, had pulled out of his parking space during an outing in West London when he made the unlucky discovery that his cream holdall was stuck beneath the wheels of the luxury motor.

In a bid to free it, Chris ran over the bag a second time before a passer-by came to the rescue to help free it from behind the front wheel.

The good Samaritan lay on the floor and poked around until he retrieved the crumpled Longchamp bag which was covered in black tyre marks.

The helpful stranger appeared star-struck as he handed over the bag to a grateful Chris, who got out of his Rolls Royce to thank him.

The middleweight champion, who retired from boxing in 1997, is known for his eccentric sense of style, often sporting tailored suits, jodhpurs, bowler hats and monocles.
